Executive skills—often referred to as “the hidden curriculum”—are critical cognitive abilities that underpin academic success. These include skills like task initiation, sustained attention, working memory, planning, organization, and goal-directed persistence. While these skills are essential for students to thrive in school, they are rarely explicitly addressed in standard curriculum frameworks.
Research shows that executive skills continue to develop well into early adulthood, and their growth can be influenced by factors such as experience, environment, and direct instruction. It is essential for educators to recognize the role these skills play in learning and to adopt strategies that promote their development in students.
This interactive 2-day workshop offers educators, school psychologists, special education teachers, and other professionals working with children and adolescents, a comprehensive understanding of executive skills and provides practical, evidence-based strategies to support their development. Participants will learn how to embed executive skills into daily routines, create a supportive environment, and design targeted interventions for children, adolescents and young adults who struggle with executive function challenges.

DAY 1 – NOVEMBER 5, 2025
WORKING WITH STUCK KIDS: An Attachment Based Relational Perspective
- Gordon Neufeld, Ph.D.
Not everyone grows up as they get older. The construct of psychological immaturity has been with us as an intuitive concept for ages, but only recently has developmental science advanced to a state where it can now yield effective strategies and interventions to address learning and behavioural challenges. Bestselling author of Hold On To Your Kids, Gordon Neufeld presents an integrated developmental approach to reaching troubled kids, using the constructs of attachment, vulnerability and maturation.
DAY 2 – NOVEMBER 6, 2025
ADDRESSING THE ROOT CAUSES OF ANXIETY IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS:
An Attachment Based Relational Approach
- Gordon Neufeld, Ph.D.
The escalating level of anxiety in our children begs for an explanation as well as a solution. Dr. Neufeld sheds light on this age-old problem, paving the way for natural interventions that can actually get to the root causes as opposed to just managing symptoms. This workshop brings a fresh and promising perspective to one of our most troubling and perplexing human problems. Although the focus is on children, this enlightening material will benefit anyone suffering from anxiety.
DAY 3 – NOVEMBER 7, 2025 PRESERVING TRUE PLAY IN A SCREEN-FILLED WORLD

Recognizing and Addressing the
Emotional Roots of Behaviour Problems: A Working Model for an Array of Troubling Symptoms
- Presented by Gordon Neufeld, Ph.D.
Are there really 298 different disorders plus countless other syndromes of problem behaviour? Could it be that we have been missing something more fundamental about how the brain works and thus what can go wrong? Could there possibly be a common denominator across the spectrum of troubled experience and behaviour? Dr. Neufeld insists that there now are enough puzzle pieces to reveal not only the emotional roots of our troubled experience and problem behavior, but even the particular emotions giving us the most trouble in today’s society. Using the lens of development, he also helps us understand how these problems first develop in childhood and what they look like at their beginnings. In distilling these dynamics to their essence, he also opens the doors to reversing these problems in both childhood and adulthood.
Hidden Keys to Student Engagement: Optimizing Learning and Well-being
- Presented by Gordon Neufeld, Ph.D.
No issue has ever been more important in education than how to engage students in the learning process. The lack of engagement of today’s students is therefore quite alarming. The downward trend has been noticeable for some time but has become even more acute after the pandemic. Teaching longer or harder has not been the answer. Changing curriculum is a never-ending exercise but also somewhat futile in making the needed difference. Restricting digital devices helps somewhat but doesn’t get to the root of the problem. Curiosity is fading: motivation is waning; mental health is deteriorating; and teacher burnout is escalating. This isn’t the complaint of only one school district or region; this phenomenon appears to be rather widespread. Dr. Neufeld insists that we cannot address a problem we do not truly understand. He will present a two-phase model of student engagement that will not only make sense of what is happening to today’s students, but also show us a way through, even with the hardest to reach students in our classes. We all want our teaching to translate into student learning. Our effectiveness and even our professional fulfillment depend upon it.
Learning Objectives
• Make sense of what is happening to today’s students
• Understand why the keys to student engagement are hidden and need to remain that way, especially to the student
• Learn the fall-back position when the usual keys to student engagement are not working
• Understand the roles of relationship and play in engagement

WORKSHOP #6 - 8:30AM - 11:45AM
Preserving True Play in a Screen-filled World
- Presented by Tamara Strijack, M.A.
We live in an age of technology, with information and entertainment at our fingertips, and at the fingertips of our children. While this reality may have its conveniences and advantages, it can also preempt the time and space needed for play in our children’s lives. Research is now confirming what age-old cultures have intuitively known all along, that play is actually a vital part of healthy development.

Reclaiming our Students
- Presented by Tamara Strijack, M.A.
Children are more anxious, aggressive, and shut down than ever. Faced with this epidemic of emotional health crises and behavioral problems, educators are asking themselves what went wrong. Why have we lost our students? More importantly: how can we get them back? Based on the book [co-written by the presenter], Reclaiming Our Students, this workshop will support educators with insights and strategies for how to build, nurture, and protect the student-teacher relationship in order to create the emotional safety needed for our students to thrive.

Fostering Social-Emotional Learning in Children and Adolescents
- Presented by Patti Ashley, Ph.D., LPC
This engaging and interactive professional development session is designed to equip educators with the knowledge, strategies, and tools needed to foster social and emotional learning (SEL) in children and adolescents. Grounded in research-based practices, this training explores the five core competencies of SEL.
WORKSHOP #7 - 8:30AM - 11:45AM
Practical Solutions to Address Anxiety Disorders
with Children and Adolescents
- Presented by Carissa Muth, Psy.D., CCC, R.Psych
As high as 20% of children in Canada will experience an anxiety disorder before reaching adulthood. For many of these children, symptoms of anxiety will impede their life and development to a degree that will create impairments into adulthood. Developmental vulnerabilities place children and adolescents at unique risk and also in need of specialized knowledge regarding the assessment and treatment of their anxiety symptoms.
WORKSHOP #9 - 12:45PM - 4:00PM
Executive Functioning Skills for Children and Adolescents
- Presented by Carissa Muth, Psy.D., CCC, R.Psych
Planning, organizing, and emotionally regulating all are executive functioning that, when impaired, can significantly impact activities of daily living. In childhood this can range in presentation from the ability to complete homework, to the ability to refrain from anger outbursts. While executive functioning never fully develops until young adulthood, certain children are at risk for lifetime impairments.
Parenting for Resilience and Well-Being in a Changing World: Navigating Modern Life with Children and Adolescents
- Presented by Gordon Neufeld, Ph.D.
We all want our children to thrive – to become all they were meant to be, despite the challenges they may face. But how is this to be accomplished? What conditions are required for optimal functioning? How do we build resilience and support well-being in an increasingly wounding and stress-filled world? Dr. Neufeld will put the pieces together to reveal rather surprising answers to this quintessential question of human development. Regardless of the challenge, this knowledge will help set priorities as well as help focus on what matters most. A consciousness of the irreducible needs of children and youth is a much needed antidote to a society that has become outcome driven and a culture that has lost its intuitive wisdom.

Healing Through Spirit: Integrating Indigenous Healing Practices in Education and Mental Health
- Varleisha D. Lyons, Ph.D, OTD, OTR/L
This workshop offers educators a transformative opportunity to explore the intersection of trauma and spirituality within Indigenous communities, focusing on the impact of intergenerational trauma and how cultural wisdom can support resilience and well-being. By examining both traditional and contemporary healing practices, participants will deepen their understanding of how Indigenous spirituality, storytelling, and communitycentered approaches can foster healing, restore balance, and strengthen the individual and collective health of students and families.
Indigenous communities have long faced the repercussions of colonization, forced assimilation, and systemic violence. These traumas have been passed down through generations, affecting the mental, emotional, and social well-being of individuals, families, and communities. Yet, alongside these challenges, Indigenous cultures possess profound spiritual traditions and healing practices that have endured. These practices remain a vital source of identity, resilience, and recovery, offering pathways to healing for those impacted by trauma.
This workshop is designed to empower educators and other professionals working in or with Indigenous communities.

We will also explore ways to decolonize your work in classrooms, counseling, social work, or any interactions with children and youth by adopting holistic, strengthsbased methods, and discuss ethical considerations for working in cross-cultural and community contexts.
Special attention will be given to the intersections of complex PTSD, developmental trauma, and colonialism, including the impact of intergenerational trauma on memory and well-being. Indigenous frameworks for understanding health, wellness, and healing will also be integrated into the conversation. By the end of the session, participants will leave with practical tools, frameworks, and methodologies for addressing intergenerational trauma and complex PTSD, and for providing healing-informed support to individuals, families, and communities.

Healing Through Spirit: Integrating Indigenous Healing Practices in Education and Mental Health
- Presented by Varleisha D. Lyons, Ph.D, OTD, OTR/L
This workshop offers educators a transformative opportunity to explore the intersection of trauma and spirituality within Indigenous communities, focusing on the impact of intergenerational trauma and how cultural wisdom can support resilience and well-being. By examining both traditional and contemporary healing practices, participants will deepen their understanding of how Indigenous spirituality, storytelling, and community-centered approaches can foster healing, restore balance, and strengthen the individual and collective health of students and families.
Participants will learn culturally grounded approaches to support healing in educational settings, incorporating Indigenous spiritual traditions, cultural practices, and storytelling to enhance student well-being and academic success. The workshop will also provide practical tools for integrating these healing methods into classroom teaching, school activities, and community-based programs.
Learning Objectives
• Understand the Impact of Intergenerational Trauma: Explore the historical and systemic factors that contribute to trauma in Indigenous communities and how these experiences continue to influence the well-being of students and their families.
• Spirituality as a Path to Healing: Examine the role of Indigenous spiritual traditions, ceremonies, and cultural practices in promoting resilience and mental health within educational and community settings.
• Integrating Cultural Practices into Education and Mental Health: Learn how to incorporate Indigenous wisdom, spirituality, and trauma.

Practical Solutions to Address Anxiety Disorders with Children and Adolescents
- Presented by Carissa Muth, Psy.D., CCC, R.Psych
As high as 20% of children in Canada will experience an anxiety disorder before reaching adulthood. For many of these children, symptoms of anxiety will impede their life and development to a degree that will create impairments into adulthood. Developmental vulnerabilities place children and adolescents at unique risk and also in need of specialized knowledge regarding the assessment and treatment of their anxiety symptoms. In this workshop, Dr. Muth will ground the assessment and treatment of anxiety for children and adolescent in a neurological understanding of human development. Presenting developmentally appropriate CBT and play therapy interventions, Dr. Muth will provide practical tools for working with children and adolescents with anxiety. Participants will walk away with the ability to identify anxiety symptoms and apply immediate interventions to address psychological symptoms and reduce the likelihood of continuation of issues into adulthood.

Fostering Social-Emotional Learning in Children and Adolescents
- Presented by Patti Ashley, Ph.D., LPC
This engaging and interactive professional development session is designed to equip educators with the knowledge, strategies, and tools needed to foster social and emotional learning (SEL) in children and adolescents. Grounded in research-based practices, this training explores the five core competencies of SEL—self-awareness, selfmanagement, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making—and their vital role in student success both in and out of the classroom.
Participants will learn how to create emotionally supportive learning environments, build strong teacher-student relationships, and integrate SEL into daily routines and academic instruction. Through real-world examples, hands-on activities, and collaborative discussion, educators will walk away with actionable strategies to support students’ emotional development, resilience, and well-being.
Learning Objectives
• Define social and emotional learning and explain its impact on academic and behavioral outcomes.
• Identify and apply the five core SEL competencies in classroom settings.
• Recognize the unique SEL needs of children versus adolescents.
WORKSHOP #5 - 12:45PM - 4:00PM
Executive Functioning Skills for Children and Adolescents
- Presented by Carissa Muth, Psy.D., CCC, R.Psych
Planning, organizing, and emotionally regulating all are executive functioning that, when impaired, can significantly impact activities of daily living. In childhood this can range in presentation from the ability to complete homework, to the ability to refrain from anger outbursts. While executive functioning never fully develops until young adulthood, certain children are at risk for lifetime impairments. Risk factors include trauma, low socioeconomic status, stress or neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD or ASD. In this workshop, Dr. Muth will present tools that can be implemented in the therapeutic setting and have been evidenced to have a lasting impact on children with low executive functioning. Many skills have been suggested by professionals, such as exercise, computer games, music, but only a few have been found to have a lasting impact once the intervention ceases. For children with low executive functioning, particular nontypically developing children (including children with neurodevelopmental disorders or behavior problems), improving skills in these areas can significantly improve their ability to flourish throughout their life.

WORKSHOP #1 - 8:30AM - 4:OOPM
Working with Stuck Kids: An Attachment Based Relational Perspective
- Presented by Gordon
Neufeld, Ph.D.
In this workshop, Gordon takes the best that developmental science has to offer and delivers it in a usable form to the professionals who work with these children or those responsible for them.
His model has been honed from years of application in a wide range of settings: education, special behaviour programs, therapy, corrections, aboriginal communities, adoption, counseling, parenting, and the foster system. This material is applicable to children of all ages, from toddlers to teens. The insights and interventions apply to a wide range of presenting problems and syndromes including attention problems, bullying, impulsiveness, anxiety problems, learning disabilities, autism spectrum, oppositionality, drug abuse, aggression problems, boundary problems, alarming behaviour, boredom and much more.
Learning Objectives
• How to uncover the relationship between psychological immaturity and the most common presenting problems and syndromes
• Three distinct processes that drive maturation and how to support them
• Maximize how emotional engagement warms the engine of maturation
• To identify the signs being defended against vulnerability
• Developmentally-supportive interventions for problems resulting from stuckness
• Why separation-based discipline for stuck kids doesn’t work and how to provide alternatives
• Why consequence-based discipline fails to work with aggression problems and what does
“I have no words to express my appreciation to Gordon Neufeld and to Hirose for bringing this valuable, life-changing information. The material taught resonates professionally and personally too. Thank you!”
Dr. Gordon Neufeld is a Vancouver-based developmental psychologist with over 50 years of experience with children and youth and those responsible for them. A foremost authority on child development, Dr. Neufeld is an international speaker, a bestselling author (Hold On To Your Kids) and a leading interpreter of the developmental paradigm. Dr. Neufeld has a widespread reputation for making sense of complex problems and for opening doors for change. While formerly involved in university teaching and private practice, he now devotes his time to teaching and training others, including educators and helping professionals. His Neufeld Institute is now a world-wide charitable organization devoted to applying developmental science to the task of raising children. He is a father of five and a grandfather to seven.
WORKSHOP #2 - 8:30AM - 4:OOPM
Addressing the Root Causes of Anxiety in Children and Adolescents: An Attachment Based Relational Approach
- Presented by Gordon Neufeld, Ph.D.
The time has finally come to be able to answer the problem of anxiety. What makes it possible now is that we currently have enough pieces of the puzzle to create a coherent picture: a mastery of attachment theory, an understanding of human vulnerability, a working knowledge of attention, and the discoveries of neuroscience. Possessing the pieces are not enough however. It takes a theorist’s mind to put the pieces together and a seasoned therapist’s wisdom to test this model against human experience. Dr. Neufeld has been uniquely positioned, not only to answer this question but also to understand the implications for our children. The resulting solutions are surprising, not in that they are counter intuitive but rather that they run counter to the prevailing practice. The focus of this workshop is the anxiety of our children and what we can do about this, both as a society and as the adults responsible for them. the dynamics and insights however apply to all ages.
Learning Objectives
• The anatomy and working model of the human alarm system
• How to recognize anxiety in all its various manifestations
• An updated and insight-based working definition of anxiety
• Why anxiety is increasing in our children
• Why current discipline methods are alarming our children
• Addressing anxiety without relying on medication
DAY 3 | Friday, November 7, 2025
WORKSHOP #3 - 8:30AM - 11:45AM
Preserving True Play in a Screen-filled World
- Presented by Tamara Strijack, M.A.
We live in an age of technology, with information and entertainment at our fingertips, and at the fingertips of our children. While this reality may have its conveniences and advantages, it can also preempt the time and space needed for play in our children’s lives. Research is now confirming what age-old cultures have intuitively known all along, that play is actually a vital part of healthy development. What kind of play do children (and adults!) need in their lives? Is screen-play true play and how do we tell the difference? In this seminar, we explore these questions and discuss what we can do as caring adults to preserve true play in a world that is moving too fast.
This workshop is suitable for all those involved with children and youth: parents, teachers, helping professionals. Although the focus is children, the dynamics and insights apply to individuals of any age.
Learning Objectives
• To understand the definition of true play
• To see play as the leading edge of development
• Why true play is an endangered activity
• Distinguishing between true play and work or counterfeit play
“Fantastic presentation, informative and valuable for me personally and professionally. Gordon is brilliant and engaging. Very happy to have attended today.”
WORKSHOP #4 - 12:45PM - 4:00PM
Reclaiming our Students
- Presented by Tamara Strijack, M.A.
Children are more anxious, aggressive, and shut down than ever. Faced with this epidemic of emotional health crises and behavioral problems, educators are asking themselves what went wrong. Why have we lost our students? More importantly: how can we get them back? Based on the book [cowritten by the presenter], Reclaiming Our Students, this workshop will support educators with insights and strategies for how to build, nurture, and protect the student-teacher relationship in order to create the emotional safety needed for our students to thrive. We will also explore some of the common roots of troubling behaviour, including aggression and anxiety. Walking through various scenarios, we will practice together the art of reading our students and responding to their needs, in order for them to be emotionally healthy and receptive to learning.
While the material is geared primarily towards educators (in traditional school, alternative education or home learning), it also applies to anyone working with children, either in a supporting cast or helping profession.
Learning Objectives
• How to be trauma-informed and attachment-based leaders in order to help ALL kids reach their full potential.
• How to build, feed, and protect the relationships with the children we work with.

DAY 1 | Wednesday, December 3, 2025
WORKSHOP #1 - 8:30AM - 11:45AM
Fostering Social-Emotional Learning Skills for Academic Success Using Brain-Behaviour Relationships
- Presented by Steven G. Feifer, D.Ed., ABSNP
This workshop will examine the impact of mental health conditions on students’ academic performance and social development, offering practical strategies schools can use to promote emotional wellness. Through the lens of brainbehavioural relationships, this workshop will explore how schools can create environments that support not only academic achievement but also emotional regulation, social skills, and overall mental well-being. Factors such as poverty, trauma, childhood abuse, parental neglect, and the lasting effects of the pandemic can disrupt key brain processes related to learning and emotional behavior, resulting in challenges for students both academically and socially.
The focus of this workshop is on early intervention, effective assessment, and evidence-based classroom strategies. We will equip educators, school counselors, and mental health professionals with the tools they need to support emotional wellness in students, helping them overcome emotional challenges and thrive academically. Participants will learn how to assess emotional wellness, implement social-emotional learning initiatives, and create nurturing, resilient school environments that foster positive outcomes for all students.
Learning Objectives
• Understand the Prevalence of Emotional Disabilities in Canadian Students: Discuss the increasing rates of emotional dysregulation in children and adolescents, and explore the critical link between emotional wellness and academic success.
• Explore Brain Mechanisms Affected by Stress and Anxiety: Learn about the key brain regions impacted by emotional stress, anxiety, and depression, and how these conditions affect students’ cognitive and social development.
• Introduce Effective Assessment Tools: Discover assessment options for evaluating emotional dysregulation in students, with a focus on the FACT Scale, a tool designed to measure the impact of stress and trauma on academic and socialemotional functioning.
WORKSHOP #2 - 12:45PM - 4:00PM
Reading and Writing Disorders: Brain-Based Interventions for Students
- Presented by Steven G. Feifer, D.Ed., ABSNP
This 3-hour afternoon workshop will explore reading and written language disorders through a brain-based educational lens, offering participants targeted strategies for supporting students with learning challenges. The workshop will be divided into two key segments: reading disorders in the first half and written language disorders in the second, each designed to equip educators and clinicians with the practical tools necessary for effective intervention.
Understanding and Addressing Reading Disorders
The first part of the workshop will focus on differentiating dyslexia from other reading disorders, with a special emphasis on classifying developmental reading disorders into four distinct subtypes. Participants will learn how to identify each subtype and match it with evidence-based interventions to target the specific cognitive challenges associated with it. We will delve into essential cognitive constructs involved in the reading process, including:
• Phonemic awareness
• Phonological processing
• Orthographic processing
• Working memory
• Executive functioning
Additionally, the Feifer Assessment of Reading (FAR) will be introduced as a diagnostic tool to assess reading abilities, helping to inform intervention planning and guide targeted support for students. Participants will gain hands-on strategies to assess reading difficulties and design appropriate interventions based on individual student needs.
Exploring Writing Disorders and Intervention Strategies
The second half of the workshop will examine writing disorders, with a focus on how “frontal lobe” processes—such as attention, working memory, and executive functioning—influence each subtype of writing difficulty. We will explore three distinct subtypes of writing disorders and discuss the neurological basis for each. Participants will also review five essential steps for effective
language instruction, providing practical strategies for supporting students with writing challenges, including dysgraphia.
WORKSHOP #3 - 8:30AM - 11:45AM
