Big Boy Bags

Amacrotrend I see rising is big bags for men. I feel like we are finally in an era where all major fashion houses are designing full men’s bags ranges, and they are also very socially accepted. Massive, leather, monogrammed, expensive bags are peak male accessory. I think a lot of men nowadays are realizing how useful it is to have a nice, big bag to carry all of your stuff. The target audience of this trend is definitely successful young men with items to carry. I think this trend is also influenced by some guys not wanting their bags to look like a purse, and thus carrying a larger bag.

I can see this styled as backpacks, duffle style bags, or tote bags. I think men carrying bags in general is a trend that will continue to increase in society, and in fashion. However, I think bag size is very cyclical, and I think men’s bags are included. I definitely think small bags will be trendy in a few years.Ahistorical example of this trend is men’s suede totes from the 60s.

Distressed Dirty Leathers

In the post luxury streetwear market, some brands have been shifting to a more workwear inspired look. One microtrend that has risen out of this larger trend is distressed leather washes.Alot of consumers are also purchasing second hand/vintage leather jackets, and patinated bags like the Balenciaga City Bag. I think distressing everywhere (denim/etc) has been a big trend for the last 5+ years, and now it is expanding to new textiles. I think the trend of more worn in/second hand leathers will be an increasingly accepted mainstream trend as more consumers are making earth conscious choices, but I also think this trend is still increasing in relevance. The target audience is definitely the fashion forward, intentionally distressed LV bags are probably a hard sell to MiddleAmerica. However a second audience of this trend are less luxury fashion inclined people who might now consider a worn-in second hand leather jacket.

Bugeye Goggles

Everyone loves a pair of big, weird sunglasses. They can be mysterious, cool, edgy, fun. Whatever your vibe, I see big, almost goggle like glasses as a macrotrend that will keep dominating the fashion cycle. Chunky sunglasses started emerging around 2018, but didn’t take their true bugeye form until about two years ago.

Brands that have been doing this trend well include Balenciaga, Rick Owens (pictured), and Prada Sport. I think this trend will continue to develop for the next three-ish years, and then we will see really small sunglasses again. I think there is historical precedent for these designs, but more in eyewear for safety or work. I think goggle glasses will continue to get more popular; I think most people pick a shape of sunglasses that they like on themself, and I think big sunglasses are an increasingly popular choice. I see these for sale across price levels, and I think the target audience is always young people who think they are “unique”, fun women, and the fashion forward.

No More Slides

In the next few years I think some of the most popular men’s summer shoes will be more classic sandal styles. This trend is definitely on the rising side right now, and will take a long time for the mainstream to catch on, but I think men’s footwear is moving away from slides and towards traditional sandals. Kanye West shifted popular fashion and made slides high fashion in the late 2010s, but now I think we are moving towards more gladiator/buckled style sandals. Also less plastic/foam, and more leather. Men/people have been wearing these sandal styles forever, but I think they haven’t been cool in a while. In a world with a mule resurgence, I could definitely see fisherman styles coming back. I think the audience is the true fashion people who feel like foam slides have become too mainstream and want something cooler. I can see this trend worn with socks/pants/shorts, all stylings.

Big Jeans Forever

Oversized denim is everywhere online, and has been. People always love a baggy jean. But where I see this microtrend come in is with unique washes. For a long time, the popular fashion was a plain blue wash (2014-2021), but post pandemic people have been embracing more of theY2K trashy aesthetic. Including all washed, dirty, baggy jeans. Brands ranging from Levi’s Silvertabs, JNCOs, Balenciaga, even Givenchy (pictured) are giving their take on the big, faded jeans. In my view, a lot of consumers are tired of plain jeans, and brands will continue to experiment with wash, fit, etc. I think this trend is increasing in popularity and is about to become very mainstream. I think this trend can be worn in classic Y2K style outfits, or in a more modern way too. I think in about two-three years we will be swinging the other way, and slim/skinny jeans will be very popular again. The target audience is definitely people who were born aroundY2K, or loved living during the early 2000s.
