Jack and Jill Hymn

Let’s work, let’s play, let’s live together Is our Jack and Jill motto forever

We’re one big family of love with blessings from God up above Gain our children’s trust, Make them leaders we must. To believe in themselves to achieve and excel

Let’s work, let’s play, let’s live together is our Jack and Jill motto forever

In our hearts we pray that ev’ry day, our motto’s fulfilled Long live Jack and Jill

Jack and Jill Prayer

Our Father, make us better parents. Teach us to understand our children, to listen patiently to what they have to say and to answer all their questions kindly. Keep us from interrupting them, talking back to them and contradicting them. Make us as courteous to them as we would have them be to us. Give us the courage to confess our sins against our children and to ask them for forgiveness when we know that we have done them wrong.

May we not vainly hurt the feelings of our children.

Forbid that we should laugh at their mistakes or resort to shame and ridi-cule as punishment. Let us not tempt our children to lie or steal. So guide us hour by hour that we may demonstrate by all we say and do that honesty produces happiness.

Reduce, we pray, the meanness in us. May we cease to nag; and when we are out of sorts, help us, O Lord to hold our tongues. Blind us to the little errors of our children and help us to see the good things they do. Give us a ready word of honest praise.

Help us to grow up with our children, to treat them as those of their own age; but let us not expect of them the judgments and convictions of adults. Allow us not to rob them of the opportunity to wait upon themselves, to think, to choose and make decisions.

Forbid that we should ever punish them for our selfish gain. May we grant them all their wishes that are reasonable and have the courage always to with-hold a privilege which we know will do them harm.

Make us so fair and just, so considerate and companionable to our children that they will have a genuine esteem for us. Fit us to be loved and imitated by our children.

With all these gifts, Dear God, give us calm and poise and self-control.

Amen.

Area Workday provides Mothers, Associate Jewels, Middle Schoolers, and Teens the opportunity to reconnect, build new relationships, extend our networks, empower our children, and reminds us of why we are committed to our wonderful organization. This year's theme is "We Are Our Ancestors' Wildest Dreams" and I hope that each event, activity, and workshop in some way reminds you that, YOU ARE, Our Ancestors' Wildest Dream! Area Workday is also a time we serve our communities. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and together, we will support Breast Cancer Awareness and Research through TOUCH The Black Breast Cancer Alliance, by assembling chemo bags which will be donated to Howard University Hospital.

The Loudoun County Chapter is celebrating our 20 Year Anniversary throughout this year, and as we reflect on the past twenty years Working, Playing, and Living Together, hosting the Southern Cluster Area Workday is a reminder of our strength and resilience, our love for our children and each other, and our commitment to our beloved Jack and Jill.

I want to thank our Area Workday Co Chairs Holly Farrell and Fatimah Moody for their phenomenal leadership and dedication to our success. Thank you to our Steering Committee, Committee Leads, and the awesome Mothers of LCVC, as this was not possible without all their efforts. I also want to thank each of our Sponsors for their support of LCVC and Jack and Jill of America Inc. Many thanks to Regional Director Melinda Hayes, RT Melissa Desarvines, MAL Alexis Steel, RS Niya Yebooah, NRS Ily Houston, Regional Events Chair Satra Sampson Arokium, and Regional Logistics Chair, Dana Zanders for their support and guidance throughout planning the Southern Cluster Area Workday. Finally, thank you to each of you for attending the 2022 Southern Cluster Area Workday. We wish you a wonderful program year and a safe return home.

Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Eastern Regional Area Workday: We Are Our Ancestors’ Wildest Dreams

On behalf of the Loudoun County Virginia Chapter, welcome to 2022 Southern Cluster Area Work Day. It is our intent to provide you with three days filled with engaging content as well as opportunities to network, reflect, and renew. With the theme in mind, We Are Our Ancestors’ Wildest Dreams, we have planned special activities throughout our weekend to allow you to appreciate the greatness of our people, Jack and Jill, and you!

Friday Night activities have been planned to maximize networking opportunities in informal settings for both our mother and teens. Our mother’s event, Mix and Mingle offers a lot of both! Moms will have the opportunity to learn from a mixologist about creating that special drink as well as experts in self care and make up fields. For our teens, we will have Black Out Loudoun. Teens and middle schoolers will have the opportunity to “hang out” with their peers engaging in fun interactive activities throughout the evening. And to make it picture perfect, the 360 photo booth and ready for takers.

Mothers will have the opportunity to participate in workshops, focused on themselves and their children with topics such as Surviving the Supermom Syndrome, Breaking the Stigma of Mental Health, and managing your health Start Where you Are. Use What You Have and Do What You Can. For our teens and middle schoolers, with workshops titled Grown ish, This is Not Your Parent’s Jobs, and #cybersense, they will learn about financial literacy, new career trends, and mental health. Our Town Hall, with keynote guest speaker Dr. Reverend Gwen Boyd, will feature staying resilient in today’s times as mothers. After hearing about staying resilient, moms will have the opportunity to engage with experts in a town hall discussion with professionals in the field of child advocacy.

As October is Breast Cancer Awareness, we have partnered with Touch, The Black Breast Cancer Alliance. TOUCH collaborates with patients, survivors, organizations, and health care professionals to work towards the common goal of eradicating Black Breast Cancer. As moms we will join shoulder to shoulder to pack care bags and chemo packs. The chemo packs will be delivered to Howard University Hospital. Moms will also get to learn about the awesome work Touch is doing in our communities.

We also want to take time to recognize and thank our committee members for their dedication and ongoing support for this important endeavor. We want to thank our chapter president, Donja Mercer, for all her support in every aspect of the program. We also want to thank our amazing Loudoun County Moms for all that you have done to support AWD. As we celebrate our 20th anniversary, we stand proud of all our accomplishments that we have been able to achieve and grateful to host Southern Cluster. A special “thank you” to our sponsors and overall Jack and Jill Community. We want to thank Regional Director Melinda Hayes, Regional Treasurer Melissa Desarvines, Regional Secretary Niya Yebooah, Member at Large Alexis Steel, National Recording Secretary Ily Houston, Regional Events Chair Satra Sampson Arokium, and Regional Logistics Chair, Dana Sanders. To our dear families, thank you for giving us the support we needed to carry on this monumental task as co chairs. Last and certainly not least, we want to thank each and every one of you for supporting and being engaged. We are proud to stand on the shoulders of our ancestors and to host you for the 2022 Southern Cluster Area Work Day.

“Life is a Matter of Choices…What Choice is Right for You?”

Description Speaker Teen Workshops

For many, college is a given, but more and more parents and students recognize that picking a college is hard if you don’t even know what you want to do with the rest of your life. How can teens know that they are making the right choice? The good news is that there are other choices besides stepping straight from high school onto a college campus. Whether you are interested in a gap year to gain a sense of purpose and direction or interested in viable options that may make more sense than the typical four year college path, this is the discussion you don’t want to miss.

“Grown ish”

Saturday 3:15P -4P

“This is NOT your Parent’s Job”

At some point, you are going to be completely responsible for making your own money and deciding what to do with it. Many teens already have jobs and startup businesses that are creating earnings. While your financial world can be complex it can also be incredibly exciting to learn about the many ways in which to make your money work for you. Factoring in the basics like bills, savings, and budgets, to the more advanced options of stocks and investments, are just some of the many financial considerations. Join us at this informative workshop to learn some practical ways to plan for your financial success. The more you know, the more you can help your money grow!

While the classic careers such as being a doctor, lawyer, teacher etc. will always be fulfilling options, no one can argue that each new generation sees an exciting array of emerging career opportunities. Following in your parents’ footsteps or joining the family business continues to see plenty of competition. Over the years, following one’s passion and applying what you truly enjoy doing as a career path has helped to foster in an ever growing field of options. If you are interested in learning about some emerging career options and how people who chose them found their path, join us as this great panel shares their experiences. Awaken your own possibilities!

Description Speaker Middle School Workshops

The internet can be many things; information at your fingertips, a place to find and stay in touch with friends, share special moments and find the latest challenge. Learn how to keep your experiences on the internet safe, positive, and beneficial.

As middle schoolers, you can learn to use the internet as a great tool that helps you with your personal and educational growth. Your journey into cyberspace can remain a valuable space to connect and learn. Join us at the #Cybersense workshop where you will hear the personal experiences of your peers and learn how to avoid pitfalls that you probably never knew existed. We will explore ‘forever’ footprints and the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Department will share internet safety tips.

Ask yourself how can I feel the absolute best about myself? How can I make sure that what I think matters most? Social media can have positive and negative effects on the self esteem of a middle schooler. The number of followers, likes, or content shares can affect a student's self esteem and their relationship with themselves and others.

But what if you had a chance to activate that superpower that we all have? Learn how to strengthen that internal voice so that it protects you from outside opinions and damaging negativity. How you see your beautiful self has to become the strongest influence as you grow and understand that you own the greatest power in how you feel about yourself. The stronger your sense of self worth, the better off you’ll be. Join us at this uplifting and power pumping session to learn how to turn up the volume on positive self esteem and explore the concepts of mindfulness to increase self awareness and confidence.

BELLEN WOODARD

11-year-old CEO and Founder of More Than Peach®, the World’s 1st Crayon Activist® & the creator of the first multicultural art brand/company!

Since spring of 2019, she has been the creative genius behind the start and expansion of Bellen’s More Than Peach® Project — the vision and philanthropic effort she single-handedly imagined & pioneered to place multicultural crayons in the hands of all students.

Bellen’s work has since gone on to become a national movement and is the influence behind recent moves by a leading art brand while also influencing many others to reconsider their efforts. (She is not a partner of the leading brand and because of the tremendous amount she’s poured into creating, building, and leading her own pioneering brand and company, it is important that any highlight of her work and products--exclusively, MORE THAN PEACH-- also stand alone to avoid exploitation by a large brand with a long history that “acted” after her More than Peach movement was well underway.) Her relentless work and empathetic spirit have allowed her to build a growing and successful brand to include her own innovative line of exclusive More Than Peach® multicultural and rainbow crayons and more!

And she is making history. More Than Peach® crayons are now being permanently held by the Virginia Museum of History and Culture (VMHC) and the Science History Institute (and more to be announced!) The Virginia General Assembly, Virginia’s legislative body, also passed the “Bellen Bill” in recognition of Bellen’s visionary leadership by way of her More Than Peach Project as well as her shown academic excellence (She is a straight-A student whose love of learning is a key motivator). Owning More Than Peach crayons is owning a piece of history!

But most of all, Bellen is an 11-year-old who works hard, plays harder, and strives to make the most of her spaces and to change the world...one crayon at a time.

2022 AREA WORKDAY 33

ORATORICAL JUDGES

SPENCER CHRISTIAN

After 50 years in TV news, Spencer Christian still wouldn’t trade jobs with anyone in the world. I’ve been a news reporter, sportscaster, talk show host, and weather forecaster. My assignments and travels have taken me to all 50 states and five continents. I’ve had the privilege of interviewing six presidents; the most prominent figures in sports, world affairs, and the arts; and, most memorably, ordinary people who have done extraordinary things. Of course, there have also been unsettling moments--reporting from hurricanes, floods, blizzards, earthquakes, virtually every natural calamity known to mankind--but I can’t imagine any career path that would have been more enriching or rewarding.

In college, my love of language and literature led me to major in English, while choosing to minor in journalism. I also played varsity baseball and had a Major League tryout in my junior year. It was clear, though, that my journalistic skills far exceeded my baseball talent; so I wisely followed my nose for news.

My career began as a news reporter, at the NBC TV affiliate in Richmond, VA, just 25 miles from my childhood home. Aside from general assignment reporting and lighthearted features, my regular “beat” included state and local politics, the federal courts, and education. I could not have forecast then that weather would be my ticket to the big time. But, following a two-week stint “filling in” on weather, I became the station’s main weatherperson; and after a brief stop at the NBC station in Baltimore, I was on my way to WABC-TV in New York. Skies were looking sunny!

I spent nine years at WABC, serving first as weatherman, then morning show host, and finally main sportscaster. During all of those years, I made frequent appearances on ABC’s Good Morning America, filling in on weather and doing feature reports and interviews. In 1986, I joined GMA full time as weather forecaster, feature reporter, and co-host. Over the next 13 years, I not only travelled the world, but I also served as spokesperson for ABC’s literacy campaign, wrote and published a series of children’s books, and had the opportunity to indulge my passion for wine as the host of “Spencer Christian’s Wine Cellar”, which aired on HGTV and later on the Food Network from 1995 to 2000. More recently, in 2018, I released my memoir entitled “You Bet Your Life: How I Survived Jim Crow Racism, Hurricane Chasing, and Gambling.”

After 22 years in New York, I heard the Bay Area and the wine country calling my name. ABC 7 has been my home since 1999, and I now get to test my forecasting skills for the Bay Area’s micro-climates. In my time away from work, I enjoy visiting wineries, watching baseball (or just about any sport), working out at the gym, and doing community service. But my greatest joy is spending time with my son and daughter, Jason and Jessica--and more recently my grandsons, Noah and Zach.

Having been blessed with so many memorable career experiences, I find it difficult to name just a few, but here’s a short list:

• Interviewing then-Senator Barack Obama just before he announced his candidacy for President

• Emceeing former President Jimmy Carter’s 75th birthday celebration (1999) and his 95th (2019) in Americus, GA.

• Surviving and reporting from the Loma Prieta earthquake, while on World Series assignment for GMA in 1989

• Suiting up and playing baseball with the NY Yankees and NY Mets in their spring training camps

• Playing basketball against the Harlem Globetrotters at Madison Square Garden

CLIFTON MANNING, MBA

Cliff spent the first 17 of his 20-year career in healthcare working with physicians and healthcare leaders to achieve patient-centric goals, while bootstrapping his way into leadership possessing only an associate degree in applied science. At times, these challenges were daunting, and he felt unqualified to achieve the success he wanted. However, he focused on becoming intentional in reading every leadership book that he could find, as well as attending frequent seminars in areas where he saw opportunities to improve. Over time, as he applied insights gained from these various sources, he was able to cross the hurdles successfully and efficiently he found himself up against. Eventually, varying degrees of success within his sphere of leadership influence became more evident.

The success Cliff achieved, and lessons learned became the catalyst for the formation of his newly published book available on Amazon, Dream Octane: Seven Steps to Discover, Develop and Deliver Your Niche. The infrastructure and frameworks that make up the book has been used over the last year for online webinars, oneon-one training, and executive coaching cohorts. Insight from the book has also been used to launch The Niche Finder Podcast which has grown from its single inception platform on Podbean.com to being on Spotify, Apple Podcast and Google podcast in less than six months.
