PROGRAM REPORT JABC TECHWORKS 2021 - 2022

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

With over 10,000 companies facilitating 120,000 jobs, B.C.’s technology sector employs more people than forestry, mining, oil & gas and utilities combined and continues to be one of the top five contributors to the provincial economy.

An additional 83,000 jobs are expected to be added by 2027, many of which are roles that don’t even exist yet. Future employees need to be highly skilled and adaptable in this rapidly changing business world.

JABC TechWorks was launched in 2017 to encourage youth to consider their education choices as they approach their senior years and inspire them to consider a career in B.C.’s technology sector and beyond.

JABC launched TechWorks 2.0, the virtual version of our popular in-person program during the 2020-2021 school year and continued to offer it online for the 2021-2022 school year. To date, over 10,000 B.C. students from urban, rural and Indigenous communities have participated in JABC TechWorks virtually.

Over the past two years, JABC has had the opportunity to support B.C. educators by delivering programs in new ways that has allowed more students to access them, especially those in rural and Indigenous communities. Most notably, JABC TechWorks 2.0 saw significant growth in the number of student participants because it is offered online.

Since JABC TechWorks' inception in 2017, student participation in this program has increased by over 1,800%. Demand for such capstone experiences continues to grow for B.C. educators.

I must say that the videos were superb! They highlighted the broad competencies required by the Tech career clusters, gave a good overview of the type of responsibilities of each occupation, and helped students understand the eclectic training and on-the-job training required for each career highlighted.
