WORLD WAR I MEMORIAL

Studio IV Fall 2021

Analytique

This project aims to capture the sense of gravity and loss brought about by the First World War while honoring the students of Benedictine College who served. Situated on the edge of the school’s academic quad, the monument from the east reads (bottom elevation) as a tomb. From the west, the monument stands tall and has a sense of monumentality. The main challenge of this project was to properly honor those students who served in the Great War, at the right scale.

For this project, we were prompted to design a suburban country house for the Carroll family, descended from a Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence. The challenge of this house was to make certain that the public was able to understand something about the house, its owners and their history. To make the house and grounds feel ‘ample’ and not ‘crowded’ was key to designing for this large residential estate. This home is 13,000 square feet and has four bedrooms, seven bathrooms and includes a large two-story chapel.

This proposed design used many Georgian and Federal styled precedents to represent the family’s history as a signer. Historic buildings like Crane Estate by David Adler, Independence Hall by Andrew Hamilton, Old Westbury by George Crawley and more were used in the schematic design process. The home is located in Baltimore, MD, where The Charlcote House by John Russel Pope is currently located.

This project redesigns an existing chapel in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Wichita, Kansas, for the remains of Blessed Emil Kapaun, proposed for sainthood for his ministry in the Korean War.

Mori Residence

This project was an addition to a 1900s Philip T. Shutze home in Atlanta. My task consisted of AutoCAD drafting schematic drawings and editing existing drawings based on sketches and design discussions with my employer. All the drawings were completed by me during the schematic phase of this project. The complete set has been released for construction.

The 2,600 sf. addition was added on the northern end of the house and included a gym, dinning space, garage, an elevator and more.

Short Residence

This project was an addition to a home in Atlanta, Georgia. On the second floor the homeowner wanted another bedroom and an enlarged master closet. My contribution to this project was drawing the plans, elevations and sections into AutoCAD, designing the exterior elevations, and completing the full project set.

The main challenge for this project was to be able to a design an addition that was seamless with the existing building. To achieve this, I used existing design elements such as the porch pillars, the window arches as well as the cornice and clay tile roofing.
