D

ear Floorball friends. It is with joy and pleasure, the International Floorball family returns once again to Sweden, this time to Gothenburg, for the WFC 2014 Men. Sweden having staged many top international Floorball events before, we have very high expectations on Gothenburg and Swedish Floorball. Sweden is introducing a new concept, with the “Fun Zone”, will further lift the event, and having everything organised under “one roof”, from Scandinavium to Liseberg to Gothia Towers, the official venues, will enable even higher interaction between players, media, spectators, which is a very good initiative. Floorball has taken important steps forward, in order to reach our Vision 2020 and a place in the Olympic Games. The next task is to be ready for 2015, when the IOC chooses the contenders for the “short list” of sports that have a possibility to enter the 2024 Olympic Games. With the new IOC President, Mr Thomas Bach, we see in his vision “Olympic Agenda 2020”, a lot of initiatives, including possible rotations of sports on the Olympic program, and it will be very interesting if the Olympic movement will “dare” to change this at the extraordinary IOC Session in Monaco, being held as we speak and read this editorial. Concerning multi-sport events Floorball is successfully now on the World Games in August 2017 in Poland, in the city of Wroclaw. We are also on the Urban Games, in 2016 or 2017, and we will play either 3 versus 3 or 4 versus 4. Taking part in these multi-sports events requires that we really go public, on all levels and communicate the important values that Floorball possess, showcasing Floorball with many spectators, and a good youth oriented atmosphere, continuously having all matches streamed on the internet, because if we can prove to be an asset on an international level, the sport structures will also support us on the national level. Introducing with the top countries a possible “combined sales” concept, in marketing and sales, as well as producing a “Floorball Magazine on TV”, will boost these efforts.

OFFICIAL PROGRAM

Here we share the same objective in all countries, regardless of size or where we are on the development ladder that is to have as many matches as possible being broadcast on national TV, or streamed on the internet, since the international events are now all produced with top TV quality productions. We need to get even further national TV companies to pick up the signal, even though we break at every WFC a new record of matches being broadcast on national and international level. The Floorball family is launching the EOTO project, “each one teach one”, a mentor mentee project, where we are right now launching a number of mentor mentee projects, and this will in the long run enable us to meet one important objective, that is “closing the gap” between the Floorball countries and hence give more quality to our sport. The EOTO is a very challenging project, where to my knowledge Floorball is maybe the first sport to encounter this path. The IFF conveys our gratitude to the city of Gothenburg, and the Swedish Floorball Association, under the leadership of the President Mr Tomas Engholm, with its good management, for your support and commitment. On behalf of the entire Floorball family, I greet all the participants; athletes, officials, volunteers, spectators, sponsors and co-operating partners and the representatives of media, heartily welcome to Sweden and to the city of Gothenburg for the WFC 2014. Looking forward to thrilling matches Tomas Eriksson IFF President

IFF WORLD FLOORBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2014

I

t is with pride and anticipation that I welcome you to the World Floorball Championships in Gothenburg 2014. It is the largest international championship in Sweden in 2014 and I hope the games will be great in both Scandinavium and Lisebergshallen.

The World Championship for men is organized for the 10th time, for the third time in Sweden and for the first time in Gothenburg. We have prepared ourselves and for four years worked hard to make this tournament the best and biggest championship ever of floorball history. Floorball is a sport that involves and engages people. Over 500 000 Swedes play regularly in a team, at work, with friends or at school. In 2014 there are 120 000 licensed players and counted in sports with the most participants floorball is Swedens second largest sport after football. It is the same when we talk about sports with the most licenses. In the statistics above the volunteers in our associations and teams are not even included. Parents, referees and other people working in associations who make it possible week after week - no matter the level. Together we are a great many who are passionate about this easy, quick and technical sport. Therefore it is important for the Swedish Floorball Association that we take responsibility also in the society.

For a couple of years we work with Swedish Floorball´s Development Model that we OFFICIAL PROGRAM have decided should be the floorball´s red thread. It’s about getting as many people

as possible to engage in sports as long as possible agewise. We will put the athlete´s development in focus, allowing children to be children and trough that break down barriers. The sports movement in Sweden has for a long time had problems with early selection and specialization, which has meant that many children and teenagers end with sports at a young age. Therefore, we are just now, through our model of development, changing based training. That is not an easy job. But it is extremely important. It will notably be seen in this world championship through a series of conferences, which under the name Sports Power (Idrottskraft), will take over the Swedish Exhibition Centre (Svenska Mässan). Topics as sport in society, the human, sports research and international floorball will be discussed. In other words, there are lots of things to look forward to during these days in Gothenburg, both on and off the pitch. I would like to welcome all supporters and thank the City of Gothenburg and the International Floorball Federation. All dedicated employees, teams, players, officials and volunteers - thank you for making the 2014 World Championship possible! Tomas Engholm President of the Swedish Floorball Federation

ear players, distinguished officials of the International Floorball federation, the Swedish Floorball Federation, the Organisation Committee, dear guests and friends of the international floorball family,

Welcome to Gothenburg!

It is a great honour for me to welcome the IFF World Floorball Championships 2014 to Gothenburg and Sweden. Floorball has an obvious place in the landscape of Swedish sports. Gothenburg and West Sweden have great floorball traditions, many talented players and enthusiastic fans in schools, in workplaces and in clubs all over the country, hundreds of thousands of people of all ages meet weekly — to exercise, practice techniques and have fun with a stick and a ball. In West Sweden and in Gothenburg, a floorball cluster has emerged — ranging from development and manufacturing to top level clubs. Over the years Gothenburg and Scandinavium Arena have hosted successful events and championships, and I know this world championship will be another one. I wish you all a memorable stay in Gothenburg. Good luck and Merry Christmas!

IFF WORLD FLOORBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2014

OFFICIAL PROGRAM

A party for everyone Champions both on and off the Championship court.
At the Fun Zone, you can find the Swedish Champions of wheelchair floorball. – It’s going to be so much fun to be part of the World Championship, says forward Robert Isaksson. The World Floorball Championship doesn’t only mean international matches in Lisebergshallen and Scandinavium, but there’s also a lot else going on. On December 11, the gates to the activity area Fun Zone open at Svenska Mässan, and it offers visitors everything from try-it-yourself activities to exhibitions. The Swedish National Team in wheelchair floorball will also be there to train before a crowd. The team has had great success internationally and has the most victories in international matches since 2008, which means that this team is number one in the world of wheelchair floorball. When they’re not with the National Team, several of them play for the Gothenburg team Invalidos who, since this January, are the reigning Swedish

champions. One of them is 21-year-old forward Robert Isaksson.
 – I have played since I was eight and I’ve played in two international matches. And we won them both. I got into the sport because it’s so fast and I like that it’s a team sport, he says during training. The fact that the team will get a chance to show what they’re made of at home court during the World Championship is something he’s looking forward to.
 – It’s going to be so much fun to be part of the World Championship, to show people disabled sports. The hopes are for people to see us and maybe that someone in the stands will be interested. I don’t think a lot of people are aware of the fact that there

are as many wheelchair floorball teams as there actually are, says Isaksson. Next to the court sits club and national team veteran Billy Jensen, putting on his goalie equipment. He has been an active floorball player since 1994 and thinks it’s about time wheelchair floorball got its time in the spotlight.
 – The disabled sports that usually get attention today are those at the Paralympics, which is justified. Those athletes spend an incredible amount of time on training, he says, and continues:
 – But we do as well, with training sessions, travel and matches. Hopefully, there’s room for us too, smiles Billy Jensen. n

A big thing for Martin The World Championship will raise the roof of Scandinavium. And that’s with the world’s hardest shooting defender on court. Has Martin Östholm been counting down the days? – Yes, of course!

OFFICIAL PROGRAM

He plays for the Swedish team Pixbo, lives in Gothenburg and wants to take the world by storm during the World Championship. – It’s so much bigger when it is home court and a Swedish crowd. Since I live here it is home court in a double sense and that’s awesome. I have very high expectations, says Martin Östholm. The hard-shooting defender, in his eighth season with Pixbo, started this season with a win. He made two goals, one a shot in power play. Of course. – And then there was a fast break where I passed a guy and got free on the wing. So that’s where I got to show off my exceptional technique, he says and laughs, confessing that the technique might not be his main weapon. Instead, besides his shot, it is his speed and the way he reads the game that makes Martin Östholm one of the best defenders in the world. The shot has its advantages even when it’s not used. The fear of it makes his oppo-

nents watch him extra carefully and he can then make crucial passes. And now he is standing on the roof that will be raised during the Championship by an amazing, cheering crowd. – It will help a lot to have 12 500 fans cheering us on. That makes me want to go the extra mile and score more, give more and fight a little bit harder. And it looks like the World Floorball Championsship in Gothenburg will be a hit when the ice and the ice hockey will make room for floorball. – Floorball is still growing like crazy and it’s getting more and more popular. Ticket sales have been great, so I think there will be a big crowd in high spirits. Sweden won the previous Men’s WFC (2012) in Switzerland. Martin was a part of the team that time too, but he does not want think of this as them defending a gold medal but instead think of it like they will win another one. – Before the last World Champion-

ship a new generation of players joined the team and most of us are still on the team today. We are still young, hungry and very motivated. – We are not here to defend anything or protect the gold, we are here to win again. And to do that in Sweden, in front of our fans and loved ones, that is indescribable. The biggest competitor, as usual, is Finland. But Switzerland and Czech Republic should not be ignored since they would love to beat Sweden. – BUT We are the world’s greatest floorball nation and we show that by the variety of players we have. It is a great strength to have four lines that deliver all through the Championship. It remains to be seen if Martin and Sweden get to lift the World Championship cup in Scandinavium on the 14th of December. n

David loves a challenge He has been a part of the floorball world for almost all his life. And he is far from done. – I was born with an underdog gene, says the Canadian coach David Jansson. He is the coach of Pixbo Wallenstam, a team in Swedish Super League (SSL), the highest floorball league in Sweden. This has been his job for four seasons now. He lived in Switzerland before that and coached Köniz, and he has also played floorball himself for eight years in SSL. That is nice resume for someone who just turned 34. – I have always been an athlete who did the right thing. If training was optional and some of my teammates went to Aiya Napa for the week, I stayed at home and trained like I was supposed to, says David Jansson. He is also the coach for the Canadian national team since 2011 and it is a job he loves. – It’s incredibly exciting. Canada is a very hockey influenced country and there are no floorball courts of the right size. Instead, they are very tiny and it’s not unusual the court is square. Floorball is still a very small sport in Canada, but there are definitely potential, says Jansson. And describes the plan he is working on to make the sport grow. – I am preparing a series of lectures to the hockey clubs in Canada where I talk about the advantages floorball can have on hockey. There is much to learn from floorball. Simply put, I try to integrate floorball in hockey and make it into a parallel sport.

OFFICIAL PROGRAM

Even though the Swedish club season goes on up until the Championship, David has had time to prepare himself and the Canadian team. The fact is that three of his players already are in Sweden and trains with another team from Pixbo, playing in a lower league. The reason is to learn as much about Swedish floorball as possible so they can perform in December. The idea is their own, although David fully supports it. You seem like a very engaged coach. – Yes, and I think it’s one of my greatest strengths. I’m not the kind of guy who screams and tells my team exactly what to do. I win the respect

of my team through knowledge and commitment. He says that the driving force and passion he feels for the sport is largely based on the fact that he loves challenges and to be placed in a position where he can organize and change things. – I think I was born with an underdog gene. I find it to be very exciting to coach a team with potential of improvement, an opportunity to actually make a difference. When I came to Pixbo 3,5 years ago, they had just

missed playoffs. I had an idea of what I could to, so it was the perfect opportunity for me. I have a lot of faith in me and my knowledge of floorball and felt that I could sort things up, which I also did. So you do not dream about coaching the Swedish National team in the future, then? – Hehe, of course I do. If they want me to coach the Swedish team, I would have a hard time saying no, says David Jansson, smiling. n

What’s up..? …Jani Kukkola, 28, starplayer from Finland, playing in his fourth Championship.

OFFICIAL PROGRAM

With all the experience you have, are you still nervous for the World Championship? – No, not really. But there are some butterflies, I guess. How is the team? – Everything is great! We have a great feeling in the team, we have a great mix of players, both young and a little bit older. And above all, we’re all excited about the World Championship. Will it be Sweden and Finland in the final as usual? – Yes, I both believe and hope for it. We will be in the final anyway and we’ll just have to wait and see if Sweden makes it there as well, haha! You play for the Swedish team FC Helsingborg and there are several Swedish national players there as well. Is that something you can use in the Championship? – No, not really. I know several of the Swedish players and I know how the Swedish team plays but they know the same about me and the Finnish team. What are your expectations of the World Championship? – I don’t really have any, but I do think it will be exciting to play in Gothenburg, and in Sweden. The Swedish players probably feel some pressure since they have home court advantage and they are favoured to win, which is great for us Finns. You have a long season behind you, are you tired? – Oh, no! We have played a lot of games, but I can promise you that we will still be hungry. Which game do you look forward to the most? – The one against Sweden, of course. It’s always fun to play against them. How well do you know the other teams? – Not that well. I’m fairly familiar with the teams from Czeck Republic and Switzerland, whereas I don’t know that much about, for example, the German team. Not yet anyway. Is there a team you think will surprise us? – Yes, I think Norway has a shot. They have a lot of great players so they can definitely surprise us. It would be great if they did. n

He has been picked for dream teams and played 143 international matches for the Swedish national team in football. But only one very beloved goalie from the south of Sweden. One hot summer 20 years ago Thomas Ravelli became the hero of the entire Swedish population when he saved a penalty kick and a got our national team a sensational place in the semi-finals. – I run a business with my brother, among others, and we help sport clubs and school classes to make a bit of money for school trips or what not, says Thomas and continues: – I also like floorball a lot. It’s a sport that is getting more and more popular and it’s fast, eventful and simple enough to play. It was a given for us to be a part of this amazing sport festival. ”We want to lift floorball to a new dimension” 48 Matches. In nine days. That takes precision and organisation. – My biggest challenge is keeping everyone calm, including myself, laughs Magnus Nilsson, director of the World Floorball Championship. The wait is over. It is finally time for the World Floorball Championship, the third time for Sweden and the first with Gothenburg as host city. – The conditions are fantastic here in Gothenburg. The event area is situated very close to the city centre, which is necessary for the event to be a part of the city, says World Championship director Magnus Nilsson. This will be the second Men’s WFC he is working on, in 2006 he was in charge of the matches in Skåne, in the south of Sweden. But even though Nilsson has done it before, it’s very hectic before the opening ceremony. – The sport has changed a lot in eight years, everything is new. Because the sport is growing so much internationally – today, 60 nations are part of the international federation – the world of floorball has very great expectations for Sweden and Gothenburg, he says.

OFFICIAL PROGRAM

And it is not only internationally the sport is growing. Today there are 120 000 licenced players in the country and around half a million Swedes play floorball regularly. That makes it the biggest indoor sport in Sweden. – We always call it the new national sport, says Nilsson and continues: – It was here in Sweden, and in part here in the west, that the sport began and started to develop during the 1960s. So Gothenburg is sort of like the hometown of floorball. What does this Championship mean for the sport? – A lot. Sweden has previously been the host for the Men’s WFC twice, and both times have become milestones for the sport and its development, says Nilsson and highlights the southwestern parts of the country in particular, where the sport has developed unusually fast in recent years. – Ten years ago, we had a strong polarisation in the Stockholm area and now it seems to have moved toward

the southwest of Sweden, he adds. He thinks the fact that the sport has grown so much here is due in large part to the success of teams like Pixbo and Warberg. – Given the strong competition in this city, where football and hockey are really popular, the fact that floorball is still on the map shows the strength of the sport. Here, Pixbo and Warberg have been solid and done a good job through the years, says Nilsson.

What are the hopes of this World Championship? – For us to contribute to taking the sport to a new level. Both for it to be seen in a new light and for us to deliver an event that is innovative in the world of sports. Therein also lies the greatest challenge – 48 matches will be played in nine days. Has only missed out once Founded in 1996, and a member of the since then, the Australian Floorball Association has played in every WFC ever arranged except for the first one. Enjoy playing great and tough games during the WFC and bringing a fairly young team. Consider this WFC as an important part of the floorball development plan in Australia where floorball is becoming more and more popular. Australia are set to host the qualifyingtournament of Asia and Oceania for the Women’s WFC next year, and is most likely interested in giving the women’s team a confidence-boost in their preparation for that event with a good performance by the men’s team here. They are playing in Group D together with Russia, Canada and Denmark.

Looking to shake things up

Players to watch:

Floorball Canada, which is the name of Canada’s national floorball team, was founded back in 2001 and has been a member of the IFF since then. Originally named Canadian Unihockey/Floorball Federation, they were also called the Canadian Floorball Federation for a short period of time, before changing to their current name. Has managed to qualify for the six latest WFCs, including this year’s edition. The 11th place is the highest placement that they’ve ever managed to reach, so they are sure to want to beat that all-time high and make the playoffs this year. Has several new players since WFC’s 2012. The team is young, fast, skilled, and is looking to shake up the tournament by playing a very competitive style of floorball. They are playing in Group D together with Russia, Denmark and Australia.

Joel Inouye: Joel is a very creative player that is dangerous in the offensive zone. He has decepive one-onone moves all over the court. Lauri Hannelius: Lauri is our captain and our leader on defence. He controls the play and plays a responsible game at both ends of the floor. Andrew Radjenovic: Andrew is a skilled player that plays with an edge. He plays hard every time he steps on the court with high compete level.

42

Look out for Watabe Japan’s national floorball team is called Japan Floorball Association and was founded in 1983. They have been members of the IFF since 1994, and participated in every Men’s WFC except for the first one which took place in 1996. Their greatest achievement in a WFC so far is managing to come in 13th place, which they did in the 1998 edition of the WFC. A lot of experienced and important players with several international games under their belt have retired from the national team. Economical and workrelated problem have also stopped some of the highest level players from taking part in this WFC. One player to keep an eye on though is Tatsuya Watabe, who has never played for the national team before, but who most likely earned himself a spot on the squad after winning the 2013 University Championship in Japan. They are playing in Group C together with Slovakia, USA and Korea.

Team colours: (shirt/shorts/socks) 1st home: White/White/White 2nd away: Blue/Blue/Blue

Players to watch:

Karl Förare: He is the captain of the team, and for good reason. He leads off the court as well as on. A potential leading scorer. Hopes of reaching the play-off The United States Floorball Association was officially founded in 2001 and has been an IFF member since then. Including this year’s tournament, they’ve been participating in seven of the total ten WFC that have been arranged. A long selection process has resulted in a good mix of physical and fast players. Add to that players who can find the net and there is the makings of one of the best U.S. teams ever assembled. The team has high hopes of reaching the playoffs. Is currently ranked 19th in the world, and the team has managed to earn a 12th place in a WFC as an all-time high. They are playing in Group C together with Slovakia, Japan and Korea.
