ECUADOR This City of Refugees consisted of creating a large concrete structure made on a 30’ by 30’ grid that would act as a bridge between a river. This large grid could be subdivided into smaller 10’ variations in which the refugees could then modify and build based on their needs. This grid would then be broken up by voids in which inflatables would be housed. These inflatables would expand in order to house different events and when collapsed would create light wells in the structure.

In these drawings we can see the void left by the inflatables and how this creates an atrium space that allows plenty of natural light into the space. This also breaks the repetitive ness of the structure. We also see how the uniformity of the structure can be broken up by the placement of the individual units of the refugees.

On the right we see a section cut that shows how the inflatables can be used throughout the city.

EUROPE The project in Europe would be called the Switchback City. The main idea behind this city was to create a city in which every point could be easily accessible to pedestrian traffic. Placed along a slope, a key design element of the city is that the units only go up and down 3 units at a time allowing for no elevators to be required in the city.

ASIA In the City for Refugees in Asia, containers left by the ships abandoned in the bay, can be repuruposed into units that can be stacked in order to house the refugees in the city. This units would be arranged in a way in which they allowed passive cooling.

Also, the placement of the containers would create different public spaces throughout the city.

The idea behind the design of this project was to take inspiration from the design of the the existing museum desined by Tadao Ando. A grid that follows the pattern from the existing museum is extended to the site and the program is placed following that grid. Similar material palettes are used throughout the addition in order to compliment the existing museum. This addition is intended to showcase the museum, therefore views of the museum by Tadao Ando are visible from most of the public program with the exception of the gallery. The gallery is rotated in order to emphasize the this part of the addition and create the “jewel” to the design.

The gallery was designed to provide a versatile space that could allow for different arrangements. The gallery could be divided into multiple spaces to house multiple exhibitions or allow plenty of space for a large exhibition.

A quality that was very important during the design was lighting. In order to allow for even light that would allow the most optimal viewing of the art, skylights were created throughout the entire roof of the gallery. These faced north in order to provide the most uniform light possible while avoiding direct sunlight that could damage the art.

The Hemerea Retreat Meditation Center is a project in which I decided to merge nature whith the program.

Each piece of the program is placed next to a garden with a view oriented to it. A large central garden serves as a courtyard space that brings all the units of the building together.

Throughout the building, solid walls and glass block and shwocase the gardens.

In the library the concept of the design is seen at a smaller scale as the garden is enclosed by the library.

The goal of this project was to attract public into the building in order to showcase the historic houses that are located on the site.

The frosted glass screen is meant to draw attention towards the building, while the cafe serves as an invitation into the building . Once you enter, a glass facade frames the historic houses, inviting the visitor to enter the park.

The program on the first floor is arranged to house the public spaces.

The cafe, a gallery ,and theater provide entertainment to the visitor. On the second floor, the library, offices ,and vault create a transition from public to private through materiality, transitioning though transparent, translucent and, opaque materials.
