During my study abroad in Berlin, I photographed the GSW Headquarters — an iconic example of sustainable high-rise office design. That image was later selected for inclusion in the CTBUH technical guide, Natural Ventilation in High-rise Office Buildings.
The GSW tower’s west facade is a meter-thick double-skin envelope housing a system of aluminum louvers. On sunny days, the building comes alive — vertical shades in red, pink, and orange pivot in response to the sun, reducing glare, regulating thermal comfort, and allowing fresh air to flow through the building via cross ventilation, stack ventilation, and the Venturi effect created by the “flying roof” above. On cloudy days, the facade appears calm and all-glass.

To have my photograph contribute to that conversation — in print — felt like joining a global dialogue on architecture and climate.
