He has served as a recruiter at the University of Notre Dame, and became a Vandenberg Air Force Base Spokesperson in 1998. He continues to serve as a US Air Force reservist today.

Murphy has volunteered for two post-9/11 deployments to coordinate search and rescue efforts. He helped with the first Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Recovery Joint Personnel Center in the US Southern Command in Haiti after the deadly earthquake in 2010.

Before that he worked as the Deputy City Administrator of Wilkes-Barre and moved up to City Administrator of the town in 2004. He has helped coordinate over $250 million in new economic development projects between his time at Goals Consulting, LLC, City of Wilkes-Barre and the City of Hobbs.
