2024 THE THIRD DECADE BEGINS

The 2024 season began our twenty-first year as a program… The Third Decade. It also presented an important milestone for the Ruffnecks Senior Class. These Seniors entered the program as 13u players in 2020, the “Covid” season. Thankfully, our recovery as a program has been a robust one. The memories of the “Covid Season” are distant. The Ruffnecks continue to thrive.

The Seniors: 17u/2025’s

Nine of the 14 players selected back in 2020 for the incoming 13u Ruffnecks roster made it to 2024. One graduated from the program last season as a 2024 grad headed to college. Their perseverance, dedication, and commitment are remarkable by any measure. These players lost all but 5 weeks of their 13u experience. In the context of Ruffnecks Baseball the 13u experience provides an invaluable foundation for skills, development, and confidence. Four Seniors on this year’s team entered the program in 2019 as 13u players. They completed their sixth year in the program during the 2024 season. The continuity and loyalty of a core of 13 players with 5-6 years’ experience, is at the heart of who we are. Loyal, committed, and great teammates.

The defense was led by infielder/SS Tommy Hennessey, a 5-year veteran. Hennessey benefitted from two years on the senior team when he was

added to the roster early in the 2023 season. The versatile defender was a leader by example. Matt Silk and Drew Reagan were also 5-year veterans who played infield with Hennessey. Silk’s growth and versatility provided depth at three infield positions: 2B, SS, and 3B. Reagan became a solid corner player with good skills at 1B and 3B. His lefty bat has great power potential. Drew Reagan’s unselfish leadership defined him most of all. Yedan Diaz filled out the infield defense. Diaz is also a capable, versatile, defender, who found himself needing one more summer of experience to launch his college career.

Five veterans patrolled the outfield in 2024. 6-year vets Sean Watts and Aiden Barclay provided experience and solid play. Both entered the program together in 2019 and chose to participate a 6th year. Their leadership and devotion to the Ruffnecks are greatly admired and appreciated. Two 5-year veteran outfielders, Will Forman and Bryce Larco, were steady contributors with their bats and gloves. Will Forman made himself into a respected outfield defender, demonstrating range and go-get-‘em ability to track fly balls. Forman was also among the top hitters during the season.

Larco was a do-everything player who found ways to contribute anytime and anywhere. Larco hit, pitched, played excellent outfield defense, and was an all-around ballplayer. He was also among the most productive hitters on the team. Newcomer, Liam Kaferlein also contributed to the outfield play in 2024.

Veteran pitchers include Matthew deBenedictis, Owen Ellsworth, Jeremy Krendel, and Lorcan Lee. Two of the pitchers, Lorcan Lee and Matthew deBenedictis, are 6-year veterans. DeBenedictis struggled with some arm problems, but never turned away from an outing to try and help his team. Determined and tough, Matthew always found ways to contribute. Lorcan Lee found success in 2024. Able to feature a strong fastball and an outstanding breaking ball, Lee became a highly respected starter, garnering considerable attention from colleges. 5-year veteran pitchers

Owen Ellsworth and Jeremy Krendel turned in strong performances during the summer.

Ellsworth continued his upward trajectory with his bulldog approach and ability to throw strikes. He commanded the strike zone successfully and built a strong foundation for future success.

Jeremy Krendel is a left hander who has tremendous upside. Krendel pitched, played 1B, outfield, and contributed with his bat. Krendel is an excellent athlete who contributes with exceptional ability to play anywhere lefties can play! Speaking of lefties!!! Lincoln Loftus emerged as one of the top arms on the staff. Lincoln’s journey from a left-handed reliever to a reliable starter OR reliever is worthy of considerable attention. Lincoln made himself into an excellent pitcher.

The pitching staff also included three 2025 grads who contributed with important innings and outings. Jett Little became a durable starter. His final two outing of the summer demonstrated just how powerful and commanding he can be. Carter Hoganson made great progress, logging important and competitive innings in both a starter and reliever role. Boone Fahey, a newcomer in 2024, showed a strong, competitive, demeanor on the mound. He attacked hitters fearlessly, and will continue to improve with experience.

Of course, no team can function without good catchers. The 2024 Senior roster found itself with two catchers who jumped directly from 15u play to 17u play. Owen Callahan and Talen Rosborough were two workhorses for the Ruffnecks pitching staff. Both catchers improved their blocking and receiving over the course of the summer. They return in 2025 with their valuable experience and leadership.

2024 in Review

The winter of 2023-2024 was another opportunity to embrace off-season work at the Facility. The Rich Gedman Catcher’s Clinic and Pro Scout Hitting Clinics provided players with exposure to professional instruction in the “Ruffnecks way.” Scouts and instructors from the Detroit Tigers, Oakland Athletics, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees worked with players in small groups. These same professionals joined the Ruffnecks coaching staff in the Boston College “Bubble” for two excellent Winter Workouts. From late November to March, the 13’s and 14’s conducted regular team hitting sessions and work in the

“Classroom” upstairs at The Facility. The youngest ‘Necks also took reps alongside the older players at the BC Winter Workouts.

The Spring: 13u and 14u Teams Development

13u Coaches Eric Chase and Steve Zerdelian did another outstanding job ushering the new class through the rigors of Ruffnecks baseball during the spring. By the time the 13’s got to Ohio for the season-ending tournament in the 14u CABA World Series, the team had developed a solid defense, sound pitching, and a competitive hitting lineup. The infield was manned on the left side, primarily by James Hamlin at 3B and Johnny Dickie at SS. Both players demonstrate outstanding athleticism. They hit in the top of the order for most of the season and were instrumental to the offense. Dickie was pushed by Jacob Malin and Tyler Crean, both of whom played admirably in the infield. Malin showed some power in his bat and was a big contributor to the lineup. Crean contributed at catcher, outfield and even pitcher. Jimmy Kim and Malin split most of the 2B work after Rai Chakravarty was lost for the season early in the spring with injuries.

Tyler Mock and Trevor Hirsch provided a valuable, and talented, pair of lefty/righty 1Bmen. Both showed great progress fielding the position at 1B. Hirsch proved himself to be a durable and versatile player, willing to contribute at catcher and even on the mound. Trevor was among the most powerful hitters in the lineup all season. Mock distinguished himself as one of the top pitchers on the staff.

In the catching department, Nate Dubuc eventually saw the greatest share of the innings. His reliability, strength, and leadership were invaluable. Tyler Crean and Trevor Hirsch also contributed nicely behind the plate. All three players, Crean, Dubuc, and Hirsch, were indispensable to the lineup.

The outfield was anchored by Thomas Byrne in center, Ryan Guden in Right, and Will Pope in left. This turned out to be one of the best defensive outfields in recent memory for the 13u class. Byrne is a quick ball retriever with good range. Guden is a gritty outfielder who contributes with timely hitting. Will Pope found his way in the everyday lineup with fearless play and a knack for putting the ball in play as a hitter.

The pitching staff was led by Johnny Dickie, Tyler Mock, Buster Heller, Jimmy Kim, and Caleb Kim. Along the way, valuable contributions were made by Byrne, Malin, Hirsch, Crean, Dubuc, and Guden.

The 13u Ruffnecks competed successfully in Ohio by virtue of their collective grit and determination. In the semifinal game, Johnny Dickie was relentless in his determination on the mound. Ryan Guden got several timely hits, and the Ruffnecks willed themselves to a stunning victory. It was a fitting tribute to a team that grew in confidence and ability.

NEW

14’s Make Progress

The 14U Ruffnecks played a challenging spring and summer schedule. Coaches Mike Lyon and Ace Adams led the team through spring competition that included numerous prep JV opponents. Many of these games featured combined rosters and included some 13u players. During the summer, Coach Rob Calagione joined the coaching staff.

The 14u roster is a talented group that is still developing. The catching corps are a strength for this class. That strength was tested. A season ending injury to Nathan Bills was a setback the squad did not expect. Bills is a reliable leader and player who always batted in the middle of the order. JT Taylor moved to the 15’s in June. This left the ever-ready and well-prepared Max Fukudome to shoulder the burden of “every day catcher” during the hot summer. Fukie did his part and then some! A durable, smart, and competitive leader, Max did an amazing job managing the pitching staff.

That pitching staff was anchored by solid performance from a reliable starting “Big 3” of John MacLean, Griff Ciongoli, and Fletcher Parkinson.

MacLean provided terrific outings on a regular basis. Griff Ciongoli was the best surprise of the year on the mound. He found success in the most competitive situations. Fletcher Parkinson was always steady, reliable, and effective. These three were supported by a bevy of pitchers who also contributed in a variety of roles. Dylan Crean, Liam Eder-Linell, Quinn Healey, Max Ruggiero, Peyton Shusda, and Trevor Smith, all delivered important innings.

The lineup featured several excellent hitters at the top and middle of the order. Cam Baldwin, who held down the SS position, was a fixture in the order. Peyton Shusda, JT Taylor, Dylan Crean, Bills (until he was hurt), Jack Fiengo, and Max Fukudome all figured in the offense. Newcomer Dariel Espinosa showed great potential as both a hitter and a fielder. He was a welcome addition to the team. The outfield was manned by the talented Dylan Crean, Jack Fiengo, Quinn Healey, Peyton Shusda, Blake Rosborough, and John MacLean. Shusda found a way to distinguish himself as a terrific center fielder. The infield saw the reliable and sure-handed Baldwin lead the defense. He was complemented by Max Ruggiero, Crosby Callahan, Dariel Espinosa, and Trevor Smith. First base was manned by Liam Eder-Linell, Griff Ciongoli, and Fletcher Parkinson.

The team traveled to Ohio for the end of year tournament at the 15u CABA World Series. Despite some disappointing results and going 2 wins and 3 losses in pool play, the team had a good time. An outing to the Cincinnati Reds game was among the highlights of the trip. By the end of the 4 month long season, the 14’s benefitted from a fine year of development.

Summer: 15’s, 16’s, 17’s Compete: Diamond Nation – Georgia - Nashville

Scout Day was Wednesday, June 12 at the NEBC. It is a day to kick off the summer for the oldest three Ruffnecks rosters. The intense, demanding, schedule of June, July, and the first week of August followed Scout Day with little rest. The Ruffnecks summer schedule is a 30-40 game grind in 60 days. Heat, every-day preparation, and the high level of competitive and tournament play, challenge the best of players.

On June 17th, the 17u Ruffnecks, led by Coaches Kevin Casey, John Brickley, and Ace Adams, made their way to New Jersey for the Super17 at Diamond Nation. The squad was undermanned due to several players with lingering school obligations. After four games in four days, the team returned to Boston and immediately boarded a flight to Georgia for the 17u WWBA in Marietta. The flight was delayed, and the team missed its

connection in Nashville. In the middle of the night, the team boarded a bus and continued to Georgia, arriving at 3:00am. Fortunately, their first game was not scheduled until 4:00pm that afternoon.

At the same time, the 16u Ruffnecks also traveled to Georgia to play in the PBR Nationals at Lakepoint. It was the first time the Ruffnecks entered a team in that event. Both teams stayed in the same hotel while they competed in separate events. Eventually, both teams boarded the same bus to take them from Georgia to Nashville for the Music City Classic. The 16’s were led by Coaches Brendan Casey, “Papa” John Casey, and Ted Novio. They competed well in Lakepoint, with outfielder Ryan Ruggiero having a standout performance that earned him a spot in the Future Games later in the summer.

Meanwhile, the 15u Ruffnecks flew directly to Nashville on June 25th to compete at the 16u level of the Music City Classic. This was a challenge for the youngest class of the High School aged Ruffnecks. The Music City Classic is one of the most competitive events in the Southeast each

NEW ENGLAND RUFFNECKS

summer. The heat and humidity provided a harsh wake-up call to the young Ruffnecks. Nevertheless, a patient and instructive coaching staff of Bryan Muenzner, Ejaaz Jiu, Dirk Baker, and pitching coach Tommy Leimkuhler ushered the team through the demanding schedule in Tennessee.

Eventually, all three teams, the 15’s,16’s, and 17’s were in Nashville together for the Music City Classic. It was a good time, and an event where all three teams found some success and rhythm to their seasons.

Competition at Home, And Then to Cincinnati

All three teams return from Nashville to play in the Firecracker July Fourth Classic. The 15u Ruffnecks earned a win, two ties, and a loss in four pool play games. They participated in the 16u Division. The 16u Ruffnecks made the playoff round in the 17u Division, while the 17u team went 3-1 in the 18u/19u Division, narrowly missing the playoff round.

Subsequent events in the Prospect Select Boston Classic, the Northeastern Team Camps, Georgetown Team Camps, and a variety of event at the NEBC in Northborough and the New England Region kept all three Ruffnecks teams busy.

15u/2027’s Season Summary

The pitching on the 15u Ruffnecks did an excellent job of meeting the challenges of the competition, preparation, and performance. Considerable credit goes to Coach Leimkuhler for his steady guidance. Sam Carbeau emerged as a strong starter and reliable reliever in key situations. Sam’s compete level and “stuff” showed continual progress all summer. Alistair Cooper was the most consistent strike thrower on the staff. His outings were defined by consistency and reliability.

Luke Hoganson contributed several important innings during the summer, though he was limited by some arm issues. Matthew Howell featured a crafty, competitive, left hander’s pitchability that helped the team succeed. Tucker Hunt emerged as a strong thrower whose future can be very bright on the mound.

Angus McKenna is one of the most enjoyable pitchers on the staff. He is a fierce competitor, has fun, is animated, and enjoys the defense his teammates contribute behind him. Angus’ outings are an “event” that is complemented by his skill and dedication as a pitcher. Kaden McNeice battled in many situations all summer. The strong, physical, left-hander has terrific potential and benefitted from the experience. Nick O’Neil, another lefty, pitched in some of the biggest games and moments. O’Neil

is a fierce competitor who never gives in to hitters. His determination was always on display each time he pitched. Leo Sacerdote was another one of the most reliable strike-throwers on the staff. Every time Leo took the ball, he gave his team a chance to compete. Leo is a cool headed, smart pitcher who manages the game well from the mound. Smart and crafty, he simply gets outs! Jackson Shusda was an amazingly welcome, and talented, addition to the team and pitching staff. Jackson came to the Ruffnecks with a lot of innings under his belt after his varsity high school season. Nevertheless, he met every challenge with excellent outings and impressive pitching acumen. Other contributors to the pitching staff were Andrew Palmer and Albin Valdez. Though neither was used a lot, they made significant contributions when it mattered.

The catchers were important to the pitching staff’s success. Andrew Plante and JT Taylor worked hard all summer. Both players were fixtures in the batting order, so it was a difficult job for them both. Each played their games, but each also were tasked with bullpen duties in the heat of summer. Plante is a smart, good, receiver who pitchers trust. Taylor has a shut-down arm to control the running game. Plante had an excellent season as a hitter, emerging as a consistent bat against all kinds of pitching.

The defense was characterized by the stellar play of SS Devin Constantino. Devin overcame some high school wear and tear, and emerged as an exceptionally athletic middle infielder with range and a good arm. He was complemented by the athletic Alexander Made, who showed that he too

can play SS or any of the infield positions. Drew Palmer played a reliable 2B and some 3B. Leo Sacerdote and Jackson Shusda played 3B as well. Alistair Cooper, Angus McKenna, and Kaden McNeice secured the position of 1B. Cooper distinguished himself as a gritty, courageous, blocker and fielder. His defensive work was impressive all season.

The outfield was manned by the platoon work of Nick O’Neil, Peyton Shusda, Matthew Howell, Tucker Hunt, Albin Valdez. Both catcher, JT Taylor and Andrew Plante also contributed to outfield play.

The hitting lineup for the 15u Ruffnecks shows considerable promise. The heart of the order featured the strong bats of Constantino, O’Neil, Plante, and Peyton Shusda. Alex Made had some excellent moments where his hitting complemented his speed. Alistair Cooper possesses a keen two-strike approach that enable him to be a clutch hitter and a consistent producer for the lineup. Matthew Howell had a good season at the plate as

well. Sacerdote, Valdez, Taylor, Palmer, McKenna, McNeice, and Hunt all shared in the hitting success of the 15u Ruffnecks.

If success is defined by how one finishes, then the final pool play game at the Tournament of Champions (16u Division) in Ohio defined this team. In a stunning 5-4 win over the first-place team in their pool, the 15u Ruffnecks knocked that team off their perch, and elevated the 16u Ruffnecks team (which needed the 15’s help) into the top tier playoff bracket. It was a fine moment of validation for all the hard work this group put into their entire season. The future is bright!

16u/2026’s Season Summary

The 16u Ruffnecks have talented position players and hitters. With several 2026 pitchers on the 17u team, they were a little short-handed in pitching depth, but nevertheless found success on the mound, which in turn led to team success against keen competition all summer.

Hitting is a strength of this class. Two power bats solidify the order. Left hander Bear Adams had a breakout summer with the bat. He delivered clutch hits, big hits, extra base hits, and, by the way, excellent defense at 1B where he is a fixture. Jack Weierman also emerged as a power hitter. Jack showed good bat skills and delivered extra base hits and a home run. These big bats were complemented by accomplished hitting from a solid core of everyday lineup players.

Garrett Falahee emerged as a catalyst for the offense. Never cheated, Garrett found way to deliver in big moments. Ryan Ruggiero possesses sound bat control. His ability to put the ball in play is impressive. Ruggiero has excellent speed. He can beat out an infield hit. He also has gap-to-gap power. It is no surprise that he showed well at the Futures Games. Matt Ulicny was also an integral part of the lineup. Ulicny has good speed and an approach that make it difficult for pitchers. Braeden Homer also had a breakout summer. The lefty outfielder complemented his solid defense with a steady performance at the plate. William Goggin showed flashes of hitting prowess to go along with an excellent summer of defensive play. Goggin is a hitter who can hit anywhere in the lineup with versatility and effectiveness. Michael Fiengo contributed as well. The speedy righty found his groove at the plate and delivered numerous important hits.

The two catchers, Joe Mayo and Logan Katz, were hard workers. Both made timely contributions to the offense. Defensively, Katz and Mayo managed the entire load of catching duties. This is an unrelenting physical challenge during the daily grind of 16u/17u baseball in June, July, and August. For the final three weeks of the 16u season these two durable catchers were assisted by the presence of 14u catcher Max Fukudome. Max joined the 16u team with confidence. He got game time,

and contributed with his bat. Most importantly, he helped Katz and Mayo with catching bullpens and prepping pitchers.

The pitching staff met the challenge of the demanding summer with great guidance from Coach John Casey. Coach Casey teaches with humor and builds confidence. This was evident in the performances of members of the pitching staff. Tucker Bliss, with a long, lanky, frame, found success on the mound in several big outings. Tucker has tremendous potential and will likely emerge as a significant force on the mound in the future. Jon Condlin continued to show determination and grit each time he was called upon to pitch. His competitive spirit and joyful demeanor are appreciated by his teammates.

Cole DeFina continued to improve with steady progress. His outing in Nashville showed how competitive and effective he can be. Garrett Falahee contributed several meaningful and important innings on the mound. Though truly an infielder, Falahee loves the competitive fire that comes with pitching. Nuriel Gutman grew into one of the most important members of the pitching staff. Other than the part-time pitching of Ryan Ruggiero, Nuri was the only lefty on the staff. He proved to be versatile and effective as both a starter and a reliever.

competed well when he had the opportunity. Grady Walsh found success on the mound in the summer of 2024. Grady proved to be a solid pitcher who gave the club important innings. Finally, there were two outfielders who held down important spots in the batting order, Matthew Ulicny and Ryan Ruggiero. Ulicny became a valued starter who threw very well. Ruggiero provided some spot starts and relief work.

Defensively, the team played well. Solid infield play was anchored by the presence of Garrett Falahee and William Goggin as the two guys who shared the greatest amount of work. Michael Fiengo and Grady Walsh provided sound infield play. Ulicny also contributed to the infield, as well as the outfield and at pitcher. The outfield was solid behind Ruggiero in center and Weierman, Homer, Gutman, and Ulicny. It is an outfield with above average speed and good ball-tracking skills.

The 16u Ruffnecks is the next “Senior” Class. Their performance on the field and their potential for the future bode well for next season. Modest success at the PBR Nationals was followed by two out of three wins at both the Music City Classic and the rain shortened 17u Firecracker Classic, where they qualified for the playoffs. The 16’s took three out of four in the Boston Classic, dropping a heartbreaking 5-6 decision in their lone loss. The team won their

NEW ENGLAND RUFFNECKS

Dylan Muccini was limited by injuries sustained during the high school season, but nevertheless

In Ohio, the 16’s made the top tier playoff bracket. A questionable 8-8 tie (we believe we won 9-8), thanks to a bases clearing triple by Bear Adams, put the Ruffnecks in a position to need help from the 15u team, which they got. As the last seed in the championship division, the Ruffnecks almost pulled off the ultimate upset in bracket play. Alas, they dropped their final game 5-6 in extra innings. It was a very well-played contest that demonstrated how bright the future is for the class of 2026.
