Academic Final Project, 2014 - 2015 (2 Semester)

Official poster about Newest Bandung City Brand from Government, Friendly Bandung.

Bandung tourism sector became an important economic factor, because there’s a lot of people who capitalize on this sector as a livelihood. Unfortunately, the improvement of public information is not as much as it’s still difficult for tourists to obtain the information about the city, especially the local wisdom of local people. Study of user experience is used to determine the level of difficulty and satisfaction for tourist to access the information, by creating a better travel experience by designing a system as a personal tour guide in Bandung, tourist will be able to get to know the city deeper , by providing more information about local wisdom, which means the information comes from the local citizen .

4

Stakeholders There are 3 main user that will be the critical part to make the system working. First one is the travellers, volunteer, and local vendor / owner. The main point of this system is connecting them through one HUB, which is Liku apps.

Volunteer The locals who provide information about their places. They can give spesific information, for example as photography enthusiast, they can give information to traveller about places that will provide good photos.

Traveller Person who accesses information about local content of their destination. With the information, they can decide which place they want to visit or what kind of local food that they want to taste. Local Vendor Person who own and provide the content of tourism, such as vendor stall, restaurant, coffeeshop, shop, etc.

According to how traveller planned they trip, there are two kinds of type, which are Free Independet Travellers (FIT) and Group Inclusive Tour (GIT). 1. Free Independent Travellers (FIT) A trip that only includes few travellers (usually less than five persons) who planned their own trip; time schedule and places. They want to separate themself with other travel trip that planned by travel agent. The aim of such method is for having privacy in their holiday . They usually use public transportation for commuting. 2. Group Inclusive Tour (GIT) Trip planned by Travel Agent, from destination, tour guide, accomodation, etc. This kind of plan to ensure travel can only focus to enjoy the trip. for this project, i choose the FIT type because the travellers theirself are planning their own trip, and with the help with Liku, it can provide information for them.

This is the highlight of the process. The reason why i make wearable is to make travellers easier bring the device by wearing it. I use styrofoam for exploration and synthetic skin. The next process is use wood to make the sample body, in purpose to get exact dimension of the product. The final process is using 3D printing to print product with precise dimension. It need to be done in purpose to fit with the arduino that will be applied into the device.

Final result of the Liku Bracelet.

The final product of Liku. There are two main devices, the bracelet and tagging device. The bracelet for keep the trip data of travellers inside the device, so make user easier to access this information. This also possible for travellers to share his data with the others. The second device is the tagging device, for collect data from bracelet. This device is going to be used by the local vendor for collect the customer data. The travellers who tag their bracelet will get benefit depending by the local vendor, such as discount. These data can be use for local vendor to get contact, and can be use for government to know the population of travellers in one area. This insight can be useful for government to make a decision.

This is the Concept Art for Liku. With using the previous moodboard as the references of styling, i use three main color that represent Bandung, which are green, blue, and yellow. Each color represent different function: Green for Information, Blue for Personal Trip, and Yellow for Scanning features. For now, i design this apps for android because most of travellers in Indonesia use Android Phone.

Every person have a different memories, so that makes everybody have their own characteristics. You can tell someone that is like to do something sport by looking his memories, that can be described by looking his photos. A single picture can have one thousand words. I’m designing a frame, that made from bamboo with coilling technique, one of my country traditional technique in Indonesia. Desiging a frame means to design an identity of person The selling point of Frab is the picture tilted around 8 degrees, so people can easily look the photos, and its made from bamboo. HANABUNGA

ITB x Musashino University Workshop, 2014

In my third years, I get a chance to join Bamboo Workshop with collaboration with Musashino Art University student. The aim of the workshop is an exploration of bamboo material with help local craftsman’s to develop a new product or concept with bamboo material. My group has an idea to adopt the lunch tradition in Indonesia and Japan. We combine the two differences culture in lunch time between Indonesia and Japan. After we were brainstorming, came up an idea to made a lunchbox, or a bento.

18

We are combining two food culture from Japan and Indonesia. Eating lunchbox (bento) is one of Japanese Tradition. Hanabunga Bento is a compact bamboo bento and can make a lunchtime more fun by preparing the bento to different shape. Each bento represents petal of a flower, or surprisingly it represents bamboo ship shape. The shape of traditional Natto package, fermented beans from Japanese cuisine inspires us to make a bento with similar shape. From Indonesia culture, we adopted how “Nasi Tumpeng be served.

The work atmosphere of the workshop.

Nasi Tumpeng, a traditional feast of Indonesia that usually used for celebration. The food consist rise on middle, surrounded with other meal.

Sketches and Inspiration of Hanabunga Concept. Inspired from combining two cultural differents, Indonesia and Japan, in feast.

HANABUNGA

ITB x Musashino University Workshop, 2014

We can set the bento into a circular pattern, so everyone who brings this bento can share their meals with others, or potluck lunch. The center of the petal can be used for putting the utensil. The reason why we put circular, because we adopt Indonesian traditional food, “Nasi Tumpeng, that represented in circular form.

This Bento can be disassembled, because when it finished, the user can fold it up and segmented into small parts. And this bento can make lunchtime more fun and interaction by sort this bento with another bento user into a unique shape, like flower shape.

ARCADE GAME CONCEPT Personal Work, 2016 (in progress)

Inspired from Mark Kleback (Lecturer in NYU) about his “DeathAudioArcade” in New York, comes up question about the meaning of the arcade game itself. In my childhood time, I see arcade game growing fastly, but nowadays game become more individual. Although they playing with other people with friends, but they playing only digitally, not physically. After further research, I found that arcade game is a good topic for studying interaction and ergonomic. When we design arcade game, we didn’t only design the physical and game, but also interaction. We can design the controller by ourself, so we can design the interaction between the player of the game. Game development becomes one of a hot topic in Indonesia nowadays. in 2014, Government establishes an individual Creative Economy Agency and start to support the game development with the aim to increase the economy value of the creativity. Unfortunately, most of them are mobile games, PC Games, and board games. I see rarely people who have the intent to develop arcade games. This makes me realize that most of the arcade game that I played in my childhood time are foreign game. So it’s kind ironic when the government supports the game development but no one starts the arcade game development. The arcade game is kind of game that can be played in public area. As game fans, and as industrial design, I see there is a big chance in this area. Motivated by that lack of arcade game development in Indonesia, and a good medium for studying interaction, I decide to make my own arcade from the hardware until the software.

22

Rapid prototoyping with cardboard for making the mock up.

I start by prototyping the arcade to achieve the Arcade game experience. I using cardboard for the frame, the laptop as the machine, and DIY controller board made by used cardboard. I use my own games for the demo with calibration of the controller (use key mapping software) From this prototype, I gather the feedback that most user who play in arcade feel different experience with the original one. They see this experience is kind of gaming experience that can be enjoyed by everyone, even one of my respond enjoy the game even she is not usually playing games. I found that by making an experience of arcade gaming can change perspective about the gaming itself, becoming more acceptable.

ARCADE GAME CONCEPT Personal Work, 2016 (in progress)

I decide to make my own games by using Unity 5.5 and Gameflow Plugin. I make two kind of game, one is Maze Ball and the other one is Playlist Player.

Maze Ball game is a collaborative maze game that needs 2 players to finish the game. Each player has their own level, and need to cooperate to unlock the obstacle until reach to finish line. I upload the code in https:// github.com/zzazabs

Maze Ball Game, build use Unity 5.5

Playlist player is a software for the user to play music playlist. The user can choose the song using the controller to choose the playlist. The idea of this playlist comes up after interviewing a coffee shop owner, who needs some facilities to entertain customer by giving them chance to choose playlist in a cafe. I upload the code in https:// github.com/zzazabs

Playlist Player, build use Unity 5.5

24

This is my 3D exploration of the arcade games. I try to design a different shape of arcade game, to achieve a form that can acceptable and modern look. I use Autodesk Fusion360 software to make the 3D and the blueprint.

TRUGOLF VR

Work Experience, 2016 (4 Weeks Development)

in collaboration with Labtek Indie and Tinker Games.

This is a project from my work experience in Labtek Indie. The client is Zurich Insurance, who want to develop a Golf VR Game that can be a strategy for their product marketing. They want to put the VR Game in their event, an International Golf Competition. In this project, my role as Creative Team Leader is communicating with the client about the game concept, and make a design brief for the team. We using Design Thinking method from IDEO and Scrum in developing. The philosophy that we embrace in this project was “Learn from Failure” and “Show, don’t Tell”.

I make a backlog, a format in Scrum method for this Golf VR Project. This format was used by team as guide for the developing game. The format of backlog was as [User], i want to [need], so that [impact]. With this format, team can freely design the outcome, as long it will fulfil the acceptance criteria. 26

This is the process of the development. Start from scratches using cardboard and other stuff in the office, until the development using Unity. By using philosophy of rapid prototyping, we can see the failures faster and can explain the ideas for clearly to the team.

The VR Golf in installation in Royale Golf Club, Jakarta. We using Samsung Gear VR (with Samsung Edge 7), and make our own golf stick (using Arduino). The stick will track the motion of the swing, and send the signal to the smartphone. For the marketing purpose, we put ads between in loading time.

RUPA DESAIN

Personal Project 2015

Rupa Desain is a collective research that concern about design, especially design in Indonesia. The lack of information of Indonesian Design, especially the legacy and story of how our ancestor designer in Indonesia define design in Indonesia encourage us to gather information. We collecting data by interview, archive the product such as furniture from late 70’s. We believe by this movement can led us to know better about what is Indonesia design itself and can be useful for our next generation who want to study design.

Preparation of the interview

Rupa Desain first exhibition in IFFINA in 2016, exhibited the archives of Indonesia furniture that we collected.

In 10 - 13 March 2016, we were invited by IFFINA committee to exhibit our data that we collect. IFFINA is a big furniture fair event, where furniture sellers, buyers, and enthusiast gather to find a good furniture from Indonesia. For the next step, we’ve been developed our website to spread our data that we found. We hope this movement it can help people to study about Indonesia Design. Prof. Imam Buchori, one of interviewee. He is founding father who initiated Industrial Design Course in ITB. 31

ANGKOT BERKEMBANG Social Experiments Work, 2016

Rough sketches for the concept.

A social experimental project with my friends with the Angkot, local public transportation with mini bus. Recently, most of the people live in Bandung use this modal transportation be their main transportation. Almost all of Bandung area are covered with the angkot route, so people can rely on this modal for fulfilling their transportation needs. Unfortunately, the Langkow hospitality performance need to improve. Sometime the driver can rude to the passenger and passenger feel uncomfortable with the situation inside angkot. They can find a dirty seat, dusty, and feel unsecure. Bandung is known as “Kota Kembang, and it means City of Flower. This slogan represent Bandung as a city that has a beautiful scenery and comfortable to live. Furthermore, Kembang is also represented as a beautiful woman who has a good attitude. Also, we found an installation from Anna Schuleit called Bloom. The art installation is put a lot for flowers until it full in Massachusets Mental Health Center in USA to entertain patient. She said that flowers can represent as healing symbolism. These references encourage us to try Anna Schuleit method in Bloom installation applied inside Angkot, to make the passenger feel comfortable and calm because of the flower. We also let woman drive the angkot, by remembering most of the angkot driver are men. We believe a woman can give a good hospitality rather than men because their natural instinct as a woman to be softer than men. We add two women inside angkot who will treat the passengers by offering drinks and fan to cooling them down.

32

Documentation the process of Angkot Berkembang process. We rent the angkot car for a day, accompany with the driver.

We were received a lot of good responds from this experience. Most of the passenger are surprised at first but tend to feel secure and safer because of the presence of flower and woman driver, also the two girls who welcome them everytime they ride angkot. Some of them also wish that this experience has always happened in their daily live. What we found is flowers that represent as good environment and friendly hospitality can make the passenger feel safer. Another interesting topic that comes up is about the gender equality. Most of the passenger see a woman is too soft to become an angkot driver. It’s the profession as angkot driver need to have strong mentality. Because the paradigm of angkot is one of the causes of traffic of another driver, usually other driver has less sympathy with angkot and usually scold the driver. From this project, we hope people in Bandung start to look different about Langkow. Our another aim is to encourage angkot driver to maintain their car so that passenger can be comfortable while riding the angkot. We also rose question about gender equality.

33

CLOSING WORD

Dale Carnegie, a writer once said, “Knowledge isn’t power until it is applied”. Any invention that founded isn’t power yet. We need to find a way to be applied to become useful in real life. That’s why, as designer, I need to find the user desirability in any invention, change it until become innovation. Every each project that I worked gave me different insight and answer about what is design. Some project taught me that design is finding balance state between functionality and aesthetic just like how I made Abhinaya. Design is about how we understanding, where comes up from how I design Hanabunga with Musashino Student. By understanding their culture and mix with Indonesia Culture, comes up a beautiful object. Some design answers a question to make another question. I found this answer when i doing social experiment project, Angkot Berkembang. After I answer some question about how to improve the quality of angkot, comes up another question How we respond about gender equality in angkot. But the most valuable things that I learn from all works I’ve done is the eager of learning things. More work that I’ve done, it will increase my motivation and intrigue to learn new knowledge. I would really like to to be an entity that can change the world, even the slightest one. I believe in research ethic, where fail is not a bad thing, but it is a one step ahead to reach the best answer. After learning about how design works, I believe that with design method I can find the answer from every question. That’s why from now I see design is not just a tool, but a mindset about how we face the problem, understand the problem and make the solution in the different perspective.
