IYAGNY Founded in 1987 by a small group of dedicated teachers, the Iyengar Yoga Association of Greater New York (IYAGNY) is a vibrant and thriving community and non-profit Iyengar Yoga educational organization. The Association serves more than 1,300 Members throughout our three-state region of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Iyengar Yoga provides practical tools to create and maintain bodily health and vitality, mental clarity, emotional serenity, and spiritual wellbeing. Developed by B.K.S. Iyengar, Iyengar Yoga is grounded in the ancient Indian tradition and philosophy of Patanjali.

Our teachers are rigorously trained and dedicated to their own studies. Our classes focus on strength and stamina, flexibility and balance, coordination and concentration, and help develop a kind of meditation in action. The method is a pathway to the alignment of body, mind, and spirit.

Level 1/Beginners: This class is accessible for students who are brand new to Iyengar Yoga, as well as continuing beginners and Level 1 students.

Focus on fundamental postures and actions within standing poses, seated poses, twists, forward bending and introductory inversions.

CL A SS DESCRIPTIONS

General/All Levels: Once the basic foundation is learned, students across all levels can participate. General classes provide a challenge for those with experience and include modifications when needed. Inversions, such as Sirsasana, head balance, and Full Arm Balance, as well as more seated, twisting, forward bending and backbending postures are included.

Level 3 & Up: Seasoned Iyengar Yoga students can experience the challenge of more intermediate asanas. Have an established understanding of the method, including a regular practice of Sirsasana, Sarvangasana with variations and be able to lift up into Urdhva Dhanurasana.

Special Classes Breast Health: Specifically tailored to the physical, psychological and emotional needs of breast cancer survivors, including those undergoing treatment.

CIYT & Aspiring Teachers: For Certified Iyengar Yoga Teachers and aspiring teachers who have gained proficiency in the method. Students should have a well established, regular home practice.

Community Class: This no charge class makes Iyengar Yoga available to everyone.

Gentle: This moderately paced, less rigorous class is appropriate for new and continuing students of all ages.

People of Color Class: A general all levels class for people of color. This class provides a space for students who identify as POC to connect and practice together. All are welcome.

Pranayama/Restorative: Explore the practice of breath awareness and modification along with refreshing restorative asanas.

Restorative: Rejuvenating and supported postures that soothe the nervous system and alleviate tension.

Sutra Study: This informal study group meets to explore the Yoga Sutras of Pantanjali.

L AURIE B L A K E N E Y Laurie is an Advanced Level CIYT, one of the most senior Iyengar teachers in the USA. She began her studies in 1971 and has persisted through a lifetime of learning and practicing Iyengar Yoga. Since 1983, Laurie has been taught directly by the Iyengars during annual trips to RIMYI. Her classes are fun and challenging; she supports her students intellectually and emotionally.

A class in the restorative mode of practice that will focus on the path and role of the breath. Inversions, supported supine poses and supported backbends prepare us for pranayama.
