Iyengar Yoga

Since the pandemic has changed our ability to teach in person at the Institutes, we now offer more than 60 daily online classes per week, and multiple series and workshops a year, provide scholarships for Teacher Trainees and regular students, and no-charge classes for People of Color, students living with Breast Cancer, as well as a no-charge Community Class and Sutra Study.

The Association’s Mission is threefold: •To inspire and enable progressive lifelong learning and practice in the art, science, and philosophy of Iyengar Yoga •To develop, nurture, and offer teaching of the highest standards •To build and support a community of practitioners within the three-state region of our charter

Association of Greater New York

Founded in 1987 by a small group of dedicated teachers, the Iyengar Yoga Association of Greater New York (IYAGNY) is a vibrant and thriving community and non-profit Iyengar Yoga educational organization. The Association serves more than 1,300 Members throughout our three-state region of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaj Iyengar Internationally acknowledged as the modern master of yoga, B.K.S. Iyengar is universally honored for the depth of his understanding and teaching of the art, science, and philosophy of yoga. He is the author of Light on Yoga, the most authoritative modern yoga text, Light on Pranayama, Light on the Yoga Sutras, Tree of Yoga, Light on Life and other exceptional reference works.

During more than 75 years of practice and teaching, he developed this innovative and inspired method of yoga, which is taught under his name. Iyengar Yoga is not only one of the world’s most practiced methods of yoga, its principles are now incorporated into the teaching of yoga under many names as well as into many other forms of exercise, therapy, and movement.

Mr. Iyengar was a pioneer in the therapeutic applications of yoga for the treatment of many medical conditions and physical problems. Medical professionals and research in many disciplines in countries around the world recognize the efficacy of the method. His revolutionary use of yoga props allows students of all ages and abilities to work to their fullest potential while overcoming limitations. It is perhaps his greatest achievement that B.K.S. Iyengar has made yoga accessible to and relevant for everyone.

Geeta Iyengar

Geeta was the principal teacher at RIMYI, which B.K.S. Iyengar established in the early 1970’s, and the senior most Iyengar Yoga Teacher in the world, until she passed away in December 2018.

She had been doing yoga by her father’s side since she was a young child. She wrote Yoga: A Gem for Women in 1990, as well as contributed to many other books and writings, taught numerous intensives, lead conventions worldwide, and continued teaching several daily classes every week at RIMYI in Pune. Her contributions to clarifying and codifying her father’s teachings were immeasurable.

Prashant Iyengar

Sri Prashant Iyengar, one of Iyengar’s six children, and his only son, is a recognized authority on the subject of yoga.

In addition to teaching daily classes at RIMYI, he has begun in recent years to offer intensives in-person and now online.

Prashant’s knowledge of the scriptures and ancient yogic texts has allowed him to write extensively about yoga practice and philosophy. He has made numerous audio recordings on the yoga sutras and is the author of several books. He is now the director of RIMYI, and along with Abhijata, the primary custodian of his father’s legacy of Iyengar Yoga.

Abhijata Iyengar

Abhijata Iyengar started seriously studying yoga from the young age of 16 under the direct guidance of her maternal grandfather, B.K.S. Iyengar, her aunt, Dr. Geeta S. Iyengar and uncle Sri Prashant Iyengar. She is a senior teacher at RIMYI, and custodian of the method alongside her uncle.

A Message from Our President Dear IYAGNY Community Members, In the IYAGNY Board President’s letter in the previous year’s report, Mike Branson stated the need for a strategic plan to serve as a roadmap for IYAGNY in the new decade.

Needless to say, at that moment or even at the kickoff of the planning process in February 2020, no one could have predicted that “strategic” would dramatically turn into survival planning!

Here we were last March, facing a once in a hundred-year event. I distinctly remember the day, Thursday, March 12, when Ed called to inform me that the Executive Leadership Team had decided to close the Institutes immediately. In this case, a decision none of us had thought would ever need to be made or communicated, but one which was necessary and prudent given the circumstances.

Looking back almost a year later, I’m truly amazed to see how our Administrative Staff, Faculty and above all, our Members and students have adapted, transitioning to an online model of teaching, learning and staying together as a community; all within a matter of days. It is a testament to the dedication of the community towards the practice of Iyengar Yoga and to the collective resilience to sustain our beloved organization.

Sometimes a crisis can accelerate change, and that too in ways may be welcome.

As a technology entrepreneur, I personally dabbled with online classes as far back as 2013, exploring its potential and limitations. Thankfully, the technology has progressed significantly that when the pandemic hit, we could switch en masse, seamlessly and rather comfortably. In less than two weeks, despite a complete lockdown, we were back with our first online class and not much later, a full schedule, transitioning all of our Faculty to the online model. Since then, we have taught 3,000+ classes by 38 Faculty members with participation from over 5,600 students. We also managed to continue our 2-year Teacher Education program.

The online model also opened new avenues of learning and connectedness; including, to the very source of the lineage itself. In some ways, this new model has reimagined what the Sanskrit phrase ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ means today: the world is one (zoom) family. We have hosted excellent workshops by senior teachers from India including those

by Raya Uma Datta, Firooza Razvi and Abhijataji. And I truly believe that the Staff, Faculty and Volunteers, under the guidance of James’s creative spirit and the executive energy of Ed, outdid themselves in our first online Yogathon, which was a tremendous spectacle.

The support lent by the community for the Yogathon and other fundraising drives, have helped us raise more than $200,000 in 2020. An incredible achievement, specifically in the backdrop of an unrelenting pandemic and socio-political uncertainties.

As we (hopefully) turn the corner this year, we look forward to re-starting our strategic planning process, which will touch upon a variety of important matters. Even though online teaching has allowed for continuity, we recognize that we will need to return to our physical home and forge new models of how both online and physical classes will coexist.

We will also be planning for mechanisms to continue our work to provide an opportunity for learning and teaching the extraordinary body of knowledge of Iyengar Yoga to all, in a safe and accessible manner.

As we begin a new year with hope and optimism, I am also grateful that we have survived this together, as individuals, as a community, a city and a country.

May the light of yoga and it’s wisdom guide us into a new future.

A Message from Our Directors Dear IYAGNY Community Members, 2020 was a year unlike any other. A global pandemic forced us all to adapt to a new way of life. Some of us lost loved ones, others lost their financial security. We witnessed a great reckoning of the long-embedded racial imbalances in this country, with the fraught political environment fueling more divisiveness and strife.

2020 brought unprecedented challenges to IYAGNY, as we were mandated to close the doors of our physical Institutes. Despite the adversity we faced, we continued to believe in the transformative effects of Iyengar Yoga and the importance of adapting to this new reality so that we can provide you with a way to study, a place to learn, and a community to come home to.

Within 10 days of closing, we launched an online platform, which extended our reach far beyond Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York, and we kept all 38 Faculty Members and 6 Administrative Staff on payroll.

In order to make the transition to an online format as smooth as possible, we provided each Faculty Member with platform, audio and video assistance, as well as input on effective online teaching techniques - these efforts are ongoing and continue to this day.

We now offer 62 Daily Classes online a week; expanded our Scholarship Program to provide financial assistance to those in need and our no-charge offerings to include a weekly Community Class, Breast Health Class, Sutra Study and a class for those who identify as People of Color. We came together to host our first-ever virtual Yogathon, sharing the practice of our Association Teachers with laughter and love. But most importantly, we stayed true to our mission to spread the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar, and to build a diverse and engaged community of teachers and students to study the art, science and philosophy of Iyengar Yoga.

You played the most significant part in our successes. Attendance has held strong since we moved online and you responded overwhelmingly to our call for support by contributing more than $200,000 in 2020, a 17% increase over 2019. These actions illustrate the strength and fortitude of our community bond. We cannot thank you enough for all that you do to keep Iyengar Yoga alive.

As we look forward to 2021, we find hope in messages of unity and in medical advances that move us towards more intimate gatherings in the months to come.

We find joy and strength in the many different faces of our students that attend our classes online, and in the resilience of our teachers – all of whom come together and remain dedicated to learning the profound subject of Iyengar Yoga.

What is Iyengar Yoga Profound, intelligent, and transformative, Iyengar Yoga is for every age, body type, and fitness level. Iyengar Yoga provides practical tools to create and maintain bodily health and vitality, mental clarity, emotional serenity, and spiritual wellbeing. Developed by B.K.S. Iyengar, Iyengar Yoga is grounded in the ancient Indian tradition and philosophy of Patanjali.

Our teachers are rigorously trained and dedicated to their own studies. Our classes focus on strength and stamina, flexibility and balance, coordination and concentration, and help develop a kind of meditation in action. The method is a pathway to the alignment of body, mind, and spirit.

Becoming A Teacher Certified Iyengar Education Yoga Teacher Iyengar Yoga teachers become certified through the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States (IYNAUS).

After many years of studentship, those interested in teaching may begin to pursue Certification.

There are many routes to becoming a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT). Those interested may attend a formal teacher education program, or may apprentice with a Senior Teacher. All candidates choose a mentor whom they work with. Teaching Iyengar Yoga involves a lifelong, rigorous, ongoing study of the subject.

In July 2020, RIMYI updated the Guidelines for Certification as well as the Levels of Certification. The previous 13 levels of certification have been consolidated into Level 1 through Level 4 to both simplify and unify the process all around the world.

The global pandemic has impacted in-person assessments. Assessments are expected to resume again, initially over Zoom, in the fall of 2021.

Our current teacher education program was established by Mary Dunn in 1992.

James Murphy has been the director of the program since Mary’s passing in 2008. Tori Milner has been assisting the program since 2009, Naghmeh Ahi since 2015, and Matt Dreyfus joined in 2017. Participants must have several years of study under their belt before joining.

The comprehensive program runs over the course of two years, after which participants work with a mentor and recommending teacher to help them develop their skill, and improve their teaching and guide them toward the Certification process. The current group of teachers in training have pivoted their learning experience to be entirely online since March 2020. They are scheduled to complete the current program in June 2021.

Continuing Education

We are committed to continuing the education of all of our teachers in training and certified teachers. At the start of our online program, James Murphy attended each Faculty Member’s online class to give feedback and provide guidance. He is now teaching a dedicated weekly class for CIYT’s and aspiring teachers to cover specific syllabi and help teachers improve their teaching whether they are going up for Certification or not. We also expect to resume scheduling special classes and possibly series for Certified Iyengar Yoga Teachers.

Hosting guest teachers like Raya Uma Datta and Firooza Razvi is also a part of our commitment to the lifelong learning process that all of our teachers have undertaken.

From 2015 until March 2020, the Yoga Anywhere Fund provided support for a paywhat-you-wish class in Brooklyn. Seasoned Certified Iyengar Yoga Teachers supervised and gave valuable feedback to newer teachers.

We look forward to resuming this program as soon as we are able.

The Institutes

In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Executive Leadership and the IYAGNY Board of Directors made the difficult decision to begin the termination process of our leases for both the New York and Brooklyn Institutes.

In the end, they agreed that safeguarding our financial resources, and, ultimately the future of our organization, outweighed any attachment we all have for those two physical spaces.

Although we are still in the process of doing so, we expect to soon be relieved of the financial burden of operating two Institutes that we cannot use. Since March 2020, we have moved our operations entirely online. We are dedicated to reopening a physical learning Institute once it is safe to teach in-person again. The IYAGNY Board and Staff continues to work to ensure that when the time comes, we will have the financial resources to pursue the goal of establishing a new space and reopening.

The Iyengar Yoga Institutes of New York and Brooklyn were the practical teaching arms of IYAGNY. From the mid 1990’s until March, the Institutes had built up to more than 114 daily classes taught per week, with up to 14 scheduled classes throughout the day. Institute Faculty members generously donated their time to teach Members’ Classes, Introductory Classes, and Saturday/Sunday Workshops, with all proceeds going directly to the Association.

We look forward to pursuing a physical re-opening as soon as it is prudent.

Supporting Our Community

Since we closed our physical doors on March 13, 2020, our online teaching efforts remain fully operational including: more than 60 daily classes per week, with up to 12 scheduled classes throughout the day.

One of the most important experiences in Iyengar Yoga is one’s first class. We offer special discounts to all first-time students, as well as dedicated Beginner Series, which run regularly all year long.

Institute Faculty offer Special Series, which allow students to focus their study on particular aspects of Iyengar Yoga, such as specific types of poses, or parts of the body.

Our Special Series are aimed toward both novices and experienced practitioners.

In addition, we have expanded our Kids Yoga Program to include Series three-days a week, a Summer Yoga & Arts Camp and an upcoming Spring Break Camp.

IYAGNY also welcomed Senior Iyengar Yoga Teachers for Guest Teacher Workshops: Laurie Blakeney, Raya Uma Datta, Genny Kapuler, Marcia Monroe, and Firooza Razvi; in addition to participating in programming offered by the Iyengar’s through IYNAUS. In the Fall, we relaunched our Membership Program, onceagain offering significant discounts on our programming, as well as class recordings, monthly no-charge Members Classes, as well as Membership with IYNAUS.

Providing Resources and Access to All IYAGNY currently offers four no-charge classes, on a weekly basis, for our students as part of our ongoing commitment to making Iyengar Yoga accessible to all in our community.

Breast Health Since 2008, the Institute has sponsored classes tailored to the physical, psychological & emotional needs of people living with or having survived breast cancer.

Brooklyn Community Services From 2015 until March 2020, IYAGNY worked closely with Brooklyn Community Services, one of New York City’s largest social service organizations, to offer a weekly class for their population of intellectually disabled adults. We are very grateful for the work we were able to do with this community and look forward to resuming this program.

Community Class A weekly no-charge class for students of all levels, taught by a rotating lineup of Institute Faculty Members.

HIV Until March 2020, this unique class met and incorporated postures appropriate for people living with HIV/AIDS. These students were given scholarships to continue their study in our Online Classes.

People of Color Class In 2020, IYAGNY began a weekly class intended to celebrate, support, and honor the needs of current and future students who identify as people of color in our community, to study alongside one another in a safe and welcoming environment with a teacher of color.

Specific Needs Class For many years and until March 2020, The New York Institute’s weekly Specific Needs Class hosted students with a variety of health conditions. Each student in the class consulted directly with teachers who designed a specific sequence of poses to address their conditions and track progress over time. Since the pandemic, it is not possible to run this class virtually. Many students have been able to join us online.

Scholarship Programs IYAGNY has offered financial assistance to those in need since its inception in 1987.

In 2018, we rededicated our long-running program to honor the memory of faculty member, Lisa Rotell, who so lovingly shared her passion of Iyengar Yoga.

When the financial impacts of COVID-19 became apparent in early spring, we amplified our efforts to help our students access Iyengar Yoga, expanding the number of students in our Scholarship Program by more than 250%.

We offer financial assistance for all of our programs to those that are in need.

In 2020, we also continued with our Teacher Training Scholarship Program, thanks to a generous gift from the Yoga Anywhere Fund.

Four students in the 20192021 Teacher Training Class received significant financial supplements to help with the cost of the program.

Sutra Study Group A study group that meets weekly to explore the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

Celebrating Our Community

Throughout the year, the Association hosts free-of-charge events and programs to help build relationships among our students and give opportunities for potential new students to engage and learn about Iyengar Yoga.

Yogathon

In 2020, our Yogathon moved online. The event was an incredible success, and had over 200 students tune in to watch live on YouTube, as hosts James Murphy, Tori Milner, and Adam Vitolo MC’d. Many volunteers came together to orchestrate the combined live and recorded demonstrations. In addition to raising more than $110,000, the event allowed us to celebrate publicly our many Association Teachers.

Our Commitment to Inclusivity IYAGNY is committed to supporting our diverse community of teachers and students by working to create a safe and inclusive space for all. IYAGNY continues to partner with IYNAUS and CVTC to provide further training to incorporate the values of diversity, equity, inclusion and justice.

As a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization, we rely on the generosity of our students to provide a portion of the resources that we need to keep our programs running. In 2020, our budget exceeded $1.3 million dollars with more than 80% of our expenses being dedicated to programmatic initiatives.

In 2020, more than 1,250 individuals contributed to the Association’s mission and programs, totaling more than $200,000 in donations, including approximately $17,000 in Foundation support.
