e have had a very difficult year with the COVID-19 pandemic and mental unrest as schools resume in September. And the ongoing Black Lives Matter protests that ignite a conversation about police bruta lity, systemic racism and discrimination. The conversations are uncomfortable and ongoing and we must not shy away from engaging or talking about the invisibility and the subtle micro aggressions we experience at work, school and in society. What does racism look like for you? Tell us in an email. I am excited that we have been able to publish this edition. As always, we are grateful to our sponsors for their persistent belief in us and in what we do. In this edition, we have some interesting write-ups on sex and marital relationships, money, business and your health.

The German philosopher and social critic Friedrich Nietzsche said: “ He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.” We believe at LCCMedia we have found ours. You. The Keto Diet What is Keto?

T

he Keto diet was the most googled diet in 2019. The ketogenic diet (or keto diet, for short) is a low-carb, high-fat diet that offers many health benefits. Ketogenic diets may even have benefits against diabetes, cancer, epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease. The ketogenic diet shares many similarities with the Atkins and low-carb diets. It involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat. This reduction in carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis. When this happens, your body becomes incredibly efficient at burning fat for energy. It also turns fat into ketones in the liver, which can supply energy for the brain. Ketogenic diets can cause massive reductions in blood sugar and insulin levels. This, along with the increased ketones, has numerous health benefits. There are several versions of

the ketogenic diet, including: Standard ketogenic diet (SKD): This is a very low-carb, moderate-protein and highfat diet. It typically contains 75% fat, 20% protein and only 5% carbs. Cyclical ketogenic diet (CKD): This diet involves periods of higher-carb refeeds, such as 5 ketogenic days followed by 2 high-carb days. Targeted ketogenic diet (TKD): This diet allows you to add carbs around workouts. High-protein ketogenic diet: This is similar to a standard ketogenic diet, but includes more protein. A ketogenic diet is an effective way to lose weight and lower risk factors for disease. Studies have shown that the diet can have benefits for a wide variety of different health conditions: Heart disease: The ketogenic diet can improve risk factors like body fat, HDL cholesterol levels, blood pressure and blood sugar. Cancer: The diet is currently being used to treat several types of cancer and slow tumor growth. Alzheimer’s disease: The keto diet may reduce symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and slow its progression. Epilepsy: Research has shown that the ketogenic diet can cause massive reductions in seizures in epileptic children. Parkin-

Ketogenic diets can cause massive reductions in blood sugar and insulin levels. son’s disease: One study found that the diet helped improve symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Polycystic ovary syndrome: The ketogenic diet can help reduce insulin levels, which may play a key role in polycystic ovary syndrome. Brain injuries: One animal study found that the diet can reduce concussions and aid recovery after brain injury. Acne: Lower insulin levels and eating less sugar or processed foods may help improve acne. Any food that is high in carbs should be limited. Here is a list of foods that need to be reduced or eliminated on a ketogenic diet: Sugary foods: Soda, fruit juice, smoothies, cake, ice cream, candy, etc. Grains or starches: Wheat-based products, rice, pasta, cereal, etc. Fruit: All fruit, except small portions of berries like strawberries. Beans or legumes: Peas, kidney beans, lentils, chickpeas etc Root vegetables and tubers: Potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, parsnips, etc. Low-fat or diet products: These are highly processed and often high in carbs. Some condiments or sauces: These often contain LadiesCorner.ca – Summer 2020

sugar and unhealthy fat. Unhealthy fats: Limit your intake of processed vegetable oils, mayonnaise. Alcohol: Due to their carb content, many alcoholic beverages can throw you out of ketosis. Sugar-free diet foods: These are often high in sugar alcohols, which can affect ketone levels in some cases. These foods also tend to be highly processed. What can you eat? Here are some recommended foods: Meat: Red meat, steak, ham, sausage, bacon, chicken and turkey. Fatty fish: Such as salmon, trout, tuna and mackerel. Eggs: Look for pastured or omega-3 whole eggs. Butter and cream: Look for grass-fed when possible. Cheese: Unprocessed cheese (cheddar, goat, cream, blue or mozzarella). Nuts and seeds: Almonds, walnuts, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, etc. Healthy oils: Primarily extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil and avocado oil. Avocados: Whole avocados or freshly made guacamole. Lowcarb veggies: Most green veggies, tomatoes, onions, peppers, etc. Condiments: You can use salt, pepper and various healthy herbs and spices. Financial Corner Dickson Maiden finds his passion through purpose, Purpose seen through the lives he touches through his inspiring words of motivation.

D

ickson Maiden is not a stranger to struggling and striving through adversity to come up on top. Born in Zimbabwe and raised by a strong African woman who never took no for an answer. In 2007, at twenty years of age Dickson and his family moved to Canada and settled in Montreal, a drastic change in both culture and weather. Within six months he found a job in customer service and later moved to landscaping. That was when he made up his mind that he would never settle for a 9 to 5 job all his life. In 2010 he relocated to Edmonton and he started his own side gig on part time basis while working full time. Long story short, Dickson quickly realised that landscaping was not the ideal business idea for him. He wanted something that touches people’s lives and more fulfilling and that is how decided to pursue an opportunity in the Financial Industry. We have all heard someone talk on social media about their “hustle” or “side gig.” It is in style; and it makes sense. Gigs are now just a click or tap away on most of our devices, and a little extra money never hurts! Here are a few things to consider when starting a side hustle. What are your side hustle goals? We typically think of a side hustle as being an easy way to score a little extra cash. But they can sometimes be a gateway into bigger things. Do you have skills that you would like to develop into a fulltime career? A passion that you can turn into a business. Or do you just need some serious additional income to pay off your debt? These considerations can help you determine how much time and money you invest into your gig and

12

Dickson Maiden what gigs to pursue. What are your marketable skills? Some gigs do not require many skills beyond a serviceable car and a driver’s license. But others can be great outlets for your hobbies and skills. Love writing? Start freelancing on your weekends. Got massive gains from hours at the gym and love the outdoors? Start doing moving jobs in your spare time. You might be surprised by the demand for your passions! Keep it reasonable Burnout is no joke. Some people thrive on 80-hour work week between job and side hustle, but don’t feel pressured to bite off more than you can chew. Consider how much you are willing to commit to your gigs and do not exceed that limit. One great thing about side hustles is their flexibility. You choose your level of commitment, you find the work, and your success can depend on how much you put in. Consider your goals and inventory your skills to get there—and start hustling now! Everything is Possible, Be a Dreamer Tell us about your business Our company named Canajan is from the word Canada’s Janitorial Services. We target entrepreneurs and seniors to make their life easier through our cleaning services. Our values are to have a sense of integrity and making sure that we are giving our clients the greatest value that they deserve. We offer cleaning services, window washing, move in and move out clean, show homes clean, post-construction cleanup and carpet cleaning for residential and commercial areas. How did you come up with the idea? What inspired you? Do you still feel the same way? In 2013, my life was really grim because I was apart from my family. I came to Canada just by myself. I had left my family back home including my son who was a baby and my daughter who was a toddler. Cleaning houses was my way of escaping. Every time I cleaned, I dreamt that someday my family and I will live

in the fancy houses I clean. I dreamt that we will be together. Cleaning was my therapy to reset my mind and manage my stress. What were the barriers you had to conquer? Since I am an immigrant from the Philippines, one of the barriers was language, government rules and regulations. Everything was totally different for me. English language was my weakness. I have a problem with my comprehension sometimes. But it never stopped me from achieving my dream. I learned to study it and understand it carefully. I studied the government rules in regulations and client’s rights and responsibilities. I did a study as well on the employment standards of Canada since I have six employees. It was not easy to adapt to it all because I am a citizen of another country but I invested my time just to get to know them. What differentiates your service

Canada

from your competitors? Aside from our values which is a sense of integrity, we treat every client specially. We clean every house and office as if it’s our own. We want to make sure that our clients are treated fairly and that they feel special. We want to make sure that they say the magic word “ WOW!” Why should we call your number? For faster service, it is best to call our number which is 780 257 0851 but we have a booking system where they can book an appointment and we will accommodate them as soon as possible. What do you struggle with the most? One of the opportunities that I am working on is building the right system. I do believe that it takes time to build the right systems. I am collaborating now with other companies that can help me build the right system to make our client’s service better. What book should every business owner read? My favorite book is the Power of Focus by Jack Canfield. Every entrepreneur has lots of ideas in their mind coming out and some of them are not aligned to their goals. This book helps me to decide some-

Our happy clients keep on telling us that we are professional in all aspects, very reliable and we are a happy friendly team. thing if I said “yes” to opportunity that aligned to my goal and “no” that makes me distracted and can burn my time. Another book that makes you focus is “ Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff” by Richard Carlson. Who inspires you (alive or not) and why? Jim Rohn is a great philosopher who inspired me a lot. I am a great follower of him. Too bad I didn’t see him alive and thank him for giving me inspiration to change my mindset. One of my favourite quote from him is “Nothing will change unless you change”. What are your clients saying about your business? Our happy clients keep on telling us that we are professional in all aspects, very reliable and we are a happy friendly team. Most of our clients are first timers and we are grateful for that because they trust us and let us do our magic on their houses. How do you keep them happy? Being consistent is what we are doing and following their special request

without being compromised. Is word of mouth working to your advantage? Word of mouth is our greatest marketing tool. Do you set high expectations for your staff? How do you keep them motivated? Why are you in business? My passion is to help others through the services our businesses provide. I ensure that my values reflect on how I do business with others. How did you get your idea for the business? I know some people who are in this business and they inspired me to consider going into their line of business. Before I pursued and started on these businesses, I reflected on my skills and competencies and how I could use these to serve other people. How Police Departments Can Identify and Oust Killer Cops

T

he global condemnation of the death of George Floyd, one of the latest in a constellation of officer-involved deaths of unarmed civilians, has grown into a worldwide social movement for disbanding or defunding police. At the far end of the debate, there are those calling for abolishing the police altogether. On the other hand, there are those wishing to defund the police. This means shifting significant material resources from police departments to social services for issues such as mental health. In cases of mental distress or welfare checks, for example, social service providers intervene rather than police, who have proven ill-equipped to deal with people in mental distress. There is growing acknowledgment that the attitude of officers towards

20

Temitope Oriola, Associate Professor, Sociology, University of Alberta the human rights of suspects needs to change, as do the numbers of police-involved killings. The research on excessive use of force by police and the sociological context and psychological characteristics of killer cops point to useful policy measures. Psychological traits and screening Killer cops and those who routinely mistreat civilians tend to be action-oriented. Research suggests that they are prone to boredom and suffer from major personality disorders. These include mood swings, impulsivity, lack of empathy, narcissism and anti-social personal disorder. Many of these traits begin early in life. Diversity workshops, training or cultural sensitivity have limited utility to help such officers. The primary solution is to not hire them in the

LadiesCorner.ca – Summer 2020

first place. This speaks to the need for greater psychological screening by police organizations. A 2014 report by former Supreme Court justice Frank Iacobucci, submitted to Toronto Police Service following the death of Sammy Yatim in July 2013, calls for “screening out psychopathology and screening in for desirable traits such as emotional intelligence, empathy, tolerance of diversity, and patience. Hire more women Women are less likely to support use of force than men. My collaborative research in Alberta shows that women are less likely to support use of socalled less-than-lethal force options like conducted energy weapons. The evidence in support of reducing deadly force by hiring more wom-

Canada

en in police departments is overwhelming. Female officers are less likely to use (excessive) force as they deploy de-escalation techniques and engage verbally. Police departments with a reasonable number of women tend to record lower levels of officer-involved killings. However, the number of women is important. Female officers in male-dominated police departments may exhibit hyper-masculine traits in an attempt to fit in. They may be just as brutal as men. There is no agreement on what constitutes a reasonable number. A gender-balanced police service should be ultimate priority. I suggest a minimum threshold of 40 per cent female officers.

My collaborative research in Alberta shows that women are less likely to support use of so-called less-than-lethal force options like conducted energy weapons. University graduate-only officers Officers without university degrees populate the ranks of killer cops. Officers with university degrees are more likely to request mental health support for suspects and demonstrate a higher appreciation for the complexity of social life, individual problems and subtleties of working in an increasingly diverse environment. LadiesCorner.ca – Summer 2020

Officers with university degrees exhibit stronger verbal skills, effective communication and empathy. The Iacobucci report recommends recruiting officers from “specific educational programs” such as nursing and social work in order to foster “a compassionate response to people in crisis.” Ethno-racial diversity Evidence from the United States is less settled regarding racial characteristics of killer cops. However, most studies find that white, non-Hispanic officers are more likely to shoot or kill civilians. A few studies suggest Black officers are more likely to shoot and kill civilians. These have been criticized for poor methodology.

Training Much of the current training for many police organizations focuses on deployment of lethal force or marksmanship. That’s a waste of time and sets up officers for frustration given today’s realities. Once out of training, officers realize that people get meaninglessly drunk, abusers beat their spouses and citizens experience psychotic episodes. Somehow, the police are required to respond to all these matters. These are in fact some of the most common issues brought to police attention. These scenarios may be frustrating for action-oriented officers. Action-oriented officers may see only moral failing in each case and respond with disdain and unnecessary force. The professional officer will see “clients” in need of bureaucratic assistance and attempt to de-escalate. There is a need to overhaul officer training and extend it to at least one

22

full year of rigorous classroom engagement with human rights, mental health issues and diversity, among others. Accountability The main officer involved in George Floyd’s death had 17 complaints in his file. Three of those involved shootings, with one death. This is a poor disciplinary record. The way forward I propose a two-pronged policy — a “kill-and-go” policy and “three strikes policy” — for police accountability. Kill-and-go means any officer who kills an unarmed civilian or a suspect who had a weapon but did not deploy it against an officer is dismissed from service and prosecuted. The three strikes proposal is similar to the disused California anti-crime law of the same name. Any officer involved in three excessive use-ofLadiesCorner.ca – Summer 2020

force incidents in which a civilian is mistreated and sustains injuries is automatically dismissed from service and prosecuted. There should be no expiry to each strike across an officer’s career. Policing is also a well-paying occupation relative to entry qualifications and length of training, at least in Canada and many parts of the U.S. The RCMP notes that the annual salary of a newly sworn-in officer is $53,144 and increases to $86,110 within 36 months of service. There are postdoctoral fellows working on life-saving biomedical research who make less than $50,000 a year, despite possessing hard-earned PhDs. The government and public should get value for the money spent on police by selecting appropriate people. Published with permission from theconversation.com

Neonatal Jaundice When yellow is not the colour of sunshine

Dr Ayo Renner

J

aundice usually appears in the first 5 days of life. Babies born in Canada are routinely checked for jaundice within 72 hours after birth. If your baby is at risk for jaundice, your doctor may want to do a follow-up examination. Most babies have mild jaundice. It usually gets better or goes away on its own within a week or two without causing problems. But jaundice should be taken seriously. In rare cases, if the bilirubin level stays high and isn’t treated, it can cause brain damage called kernicterus. This can lead to serious lifelong problems.

What is really the big deal about jaundice? It’s a pretty big deal because a lot of children in Nigeria are hospitalised and readmitted in the first week of life as a result of Neonatal Jaundice. Untreated neonatal jaundice is among the top five killers of babies in the first 28 days of life in Nigeria. Jaundice occurs because your baby’s body has more bilirubin than it can get rid of. Bilirubin is a yellow substance that’s made when the body breaks down old red blood cells. It leaves the body through urine and stool. When you’re pregnant, your body removes bilirubin from your baby through the placenLadiesCorner.ca – Summer 2020

ta. After birth, your baby’s body must get rid of the bilirubin on its own. In most cases, babies have what’s called physiologic jaundice. It occurs because their organs aren’t yet able to get rid of excess bilirubin very well. This type of jaundice usually appears about 24 hours after birth. It gets worse until the third or fourth day, and then it goes away in about a week. In rare cases, jaundice may be caused by other things, such as an infection, a problem with the baby’s digestive system, or a problem with the mom’s and baby’s blood types (Rh incompatibility). Your baby may

have one of these problems if jaundice appears less than a day after birth. You should be bothered about jaundice for the following reasons: Jaundice can cause damage to a specific part of the brain involved with coordination of movement. That part is called the basal ganglia. This can lead to a severe movement disorder called Cerebral Palsy. There may be delays in development like delayed walking and delayed speech It can cause death in the immediate period when the level goes too high. The children can develop deafness. There can be issues with poorly formed teeth. The children may have convulsions in the newborn period and later in life. There may be learning difficulties when the child becomes older. Causes of jaundice Let’s talk about what does not cause jaundice: Jaundice is not caused by wearing yellow clothes for baby. It is not caused by malaria in the baby or mother.

24

Jaundice is caused by a lot of things. There is physiologic jaundice. In this type of jaundice, the liver of the baby is unable to handle the processing of bilirubin due to a large number of dying red blood cells in the baby’s system. There is jaundice that is caused by abnormally excessive breakdown of red blood cells When the mother has blood group O and the baby has A or B. This is called ABO incompatibility. Some proteins in the mother’s blood can enter the baby through the placenta and break down baby’s blood leading to jaundice and dangerously low blood levels. If the mother has a blood group that has anything negative (like O negative, B negative, A negative), it means they are rhesus negative and their babies can develop very bad jaundice the same way it happens in ABO incompatibility. There are certain chemicals called enzymes on the body of red blood cells. When some of these enzymes are not available in adequate amounts on the red cell, they lack “odieshi” and so any kind of stress to the red LadiesCorner.ca – Summer 2020

cell will destroy it. The condition in this category of enzyme lack is G6PD deficiency. Red cells can also have abnormal shape because of an error in how the coverings (or membranes) were formed. These things make them so fragile that any small thing they will burst and get destroyed. Some of these abnormalities are even inherited. They include conditions like hereditary spherocytosis and elliptocytosis. Infections too can cause excessive breakdown of red blood cells leading to excess bilirubin. Bruising and concealed bleeding into the scalp of the baby during difficult deliveries can also cause jaundice in the new-born due to destruction of red blood cells. Liver damage from infections like hepatitis and bacterial infections can damage the liver of newborns and cause neonatal jaundice. Breast milk can cause jaundice. This is described as Breast milk Jaundice. There are certain chemicals in the breast milk that make the level of jaundice rise. The good news is breast milk jaundice is very harmless but we

Canada must be sure it is not another thing causing the jaundice before we call it breast milk jaundice. Breastfeeding jaundice is jaundice caused by delayed feeding of the child. For instance the mother may not have started lactating early or the baby could not be fed because he or she was too ill. We can treat jaundice using any of the following methods: Phototherapy. This is a special light that reduces the level of serum bilirubin by making it easier for the child to pass out in the urine. It’s quite safe but for the best effect baby needs to stay under it for as

long as possible. We cover the eyes of the babies to prevent damage to the eyes and the testes of the boys to prevent damage to their reproductive industry. We also try to expose them as much as possible to get as much light on as much skin as we can. Medication: Some other medications can be given based on the circumstances. But they are usually not the first line of treatment. Dr Ayo Renner is a paediatrician from Lagos, Nigeria. He can be found on Instagram @thenoisynaijapaediatrician

And Now... what is on your mind?

I

am so glad I have the opportunity to spend the next few minutes alone with you; yes, you and me, one-on-one, alone together! When I received the invitation to submit an article in this magazine, I was blank – I actually asked my wife if she would rather write an article, but she was busy. Then I brazed myself to write from my heart. Now, its you and me alone - this is a conversation between me and you! So, it occurred to me to ask you this question – ‘what’s on your mind?’ Please don’t give me a plastic face answer – how are you really doing, in view of all that is happening in the world? Your business, your relationships, your health, … your dreams? So, in the midst of this global pan-

26

demic, when events are not predictable; businesses are affected, health is dangling in the air, relationships are held together only by little strands, there is a tendency to be overly occupied and swallowed up in negativity. But I tell you this, you can stop it – you need to nib it in the bud before it germinate negative seeds that affects the trajectory of your future. Stop that negativity thinking. John Maxwell said, ‘If you realize how powerful your thoughts are, you will never think a negative thought’. It might not be possible to prevent negative thoughts; it is very possible to stop negative thinking. You see, a thought is only a thought until you dwell on it for a while, and then it engulfs your thinking. So, when you conLadiesCorner.ca – Summer 2020

sciously dwell on a negative thought, then it becomes a negative thinking. John Maxwell said, ‘we can live a better life if we think a little better!’ I love the advice that Paul of Tarsus gave in Phil. 4:8 (NLT). ‘And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise’. This is a principle that we need to apply today, for us to stand, despite the catastrophes we have gone through as a people. You have to be intentional; you have to fix your mind with hopeful thoughts. Think what is admirable. Believe the best is yet to come, and I pray God restores unto

you in every area of your loss. I pray you find peace in life and relationship with the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ. You need to say like Jonny said in the movie ‘Sing’. Mr. Moon had practically gone bankrupt and the steps he took towards recovery plunged him further into deep mess - The great Moon Theatre had become a hip of rubbles! Courage came from no-where and a bunch of desperate but hopeful to-be-artist had gathered a crown for a concert under an open roof. In spite of their losses, they had the right attitude, they did not entertain negative thinking. Jonny was like an orphan; his father was languishing in the prison, but his song revealed the heart of a hopeful son; as he sang himself away. ’Don’t you know that I’m still standing better than I ever did; looking like a true survivor; and feeling like a little kid. I’m still standing after all this time, I am picking up the pieces of my life, … am still standing, yea, yea, yea! Each time I watch the movie with my grandkids, this section is their favorite part, and as we sing together, my grandson raises his voice, ‘…am still standing; yea, yea, yea’! A sense of hope usually come upon me afresh! You too have to make declarations of hope over your life, whatever your losses. Meena, in the same movie was so terrified to sing before people. When she eventually yielded to the cheering of Mr. Moon, and sang, it was

magnetic - everybody had a blast, ‘…So, don’t you worry about a thing’, she sang! The words of Meena’s song is relevant in our world today, where anxiety and depression have gained upper hand over people’s thoughts, and understandably so! That’s why I am asking you, ‘what’s on your mind?’ Your most important asset right now is your sound mind. You have to guard it well and keep it in a healthy state. You must not entertain negative thinking. Whatever the case, we must keep our hope alive & maintain a positive spirit! More so, God tells us in Phil. 4:6-7 (NLT), ‘Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.’ Jesus said in Matt 11:28 (NLT) ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give

you rest’. I responded to this invitation for the first-time many years ago, and It made a whole lot of difference in my life; and guess what, I still respond to the same invitation now and again, when life happens. Why don’t you take on this invitation too? We need the Lord’s help at this time, and He is right here, right now, with His arms wide open and His shoulder broad enough for us to cry on. It is okay to pour your heart to Him, and He will

27

LadiesCorner answer you. Would you like to join me as we do that right now? He says He will take you to the place of rest. In that movie, ‘Sing’, Mr. Moon said, ‘you know what’s great about hitting rock bottom? There’s only one way left to go, and that’s up!’ After losing everything, with his positive mindset, he ended up with The New Moon Theatre, all down-payment paid for! This is one thing I know about you too – You can recover all you’ve lost! This is the thought I what you to occupy your mind with. Determine to ReCapture your life, lift up your eyes, raise your hope up, and go for the gold. Your best days are still ahead of you! When anyone

asks you, ‘what’s on your mind?’, I believe you will say, I will recover from all losses! Amen. After all said and done, I invite you to make Jesus your Lord and savior (if you have not yet done so), as we braze up and move on. That way, your future is secure in Him. Tell God now, that you accept the sacrifice Jesus paid for you on the cross. Declare Jesus as the Lord of your life and place your life in His hands going forward. Pray that prayer silently now, God is hearing you. You are sure in His safe hand. You will indeed have rest all round. If you made that decision, congratulations, you are welcome to God’s family. I’ll like to hear from you. Write to inform me of this de-

cision. Email me: info@hogmonline. org. I will send you one of my ebooks ‘A New Step in the Right Direction’, it will guide and help you grow in this new journey of relationship with Jesus. Alison Clarke How do books get published? One option is to indie or self publish. With this option, you have to pay to get your work published. The other option is mainstream publishing, where you are getting a publisher, and you do not have to pay to publish. Where do you get your information or ideas for your books? Travelling, reading, walking, these things inspire me to write my books. I did a book tour of the UK last year. It was a magical, unforgettable experience, and I enjoyed meeting people who enjoy my work. I think travelling is a wonderful thing to do for yourself as a human being. Sometimes, the trips I go on inspire some of my work. When did you write your first book and how old were you? I wrote my first book when I was in grade six. It was entitled, The Grass People. It was an allegory of the four seasons – spring, summer, fall, and winter. What do you like to do when you’re not writing? I enjoy watching movies, reading, walking, and travelling. When it comes to books, I read anything: biographies, autobiographies, poetry books, art books, and so on. I really enjoyed reading The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien, as it is a book focussed on the origin, the genesis of many of the mystical beings in the Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Dreams From My Father by Barack Obama is another favourite book of mine. It’s an inspirational autobiography.

LadiesCorner What does your family think of your writing? Everyone is supportive. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books? Publishing, indie publishing, or mainstream publishing is a collective endeavour. You do not do it alone. How many books have you written? Which is your favourite? I have written five books, and a sixth is coming out on October 15, to be published by University Of Calgary press, a poetry collection about Phillis Wheatley, the first person of colour to publish a book of poetry, and she was a slave. When it comes to favourite books I have written, I don’t have one. I am proud and happy about all of them.

32

Do you have any suggestions to help me become a better writer? If so, what are they? Keep writing – that is how you get better. Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say? I hear a lot of wonderful feedback from my readers. A young woman came up to me in a grocery store in Old Strathcona and said that her older sister loves my books. That meant a lot to me. It encourages me to continue on this artistic path. Do you like to create books for adults? My young adult fantasy series, The Sisterhood Series, is for everyone – I have people in their fifties and

LadiesCorner.ca – Summer 2020

sixties who enjoy my books, as well as younger people who are pre-teen along with those in their twenties and thirties. My readers represent a wide demographic which I think is a victory. What do you think makes a good story? Good writing makes a good story. As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up? As a child, I also wanted to write, so it’s a dream come true that I am writing professionally today. Alison Clarke is the author of a number of fantasy series. Hot Sex in Marriage Tayo El-Nathan

A

s sad as it seems, it appears that in most marriages, sex is no longer hot or existing. I should say, that I have been told that sex is for non-married couples and that making love is the politically correct way to describe sex in marriage. There are other terms though back in the days it used to be “Knocking boots” “knowing your wife” more biblically “and he went into her or he knew his wife” you get the idea because all roads lead to intercourse… or the lack of it in marriage. These days where people are busy working, running a home, raising children, having that hot sex in marriage seems to be a dream, a dream that every man/husLadiesCorner.ca – Winter 2019/2020

band is always chasing and one that most women are running away from, or maybe not. I am a married woman and I have been married 10 years. I have heard from respectable people and even from marriage counselors that couples should have sex daily or at least 5 times a week and I wondered if this was possible. In fact as the counsellor was saying it, I was wondering if he was serious. The counsellor was a man so I automatically assumed that he was biased. The counsellor said “Madam, you need to give it to your man as he needs it, when he needs it and how he wants it” I said yes sir, feeing very uncomfortable with the whole conversation. He continued by saying “Madam listen, if he wants oral, its ok, your body is for him, while his body is for you. You need to submit in all things, this includes your body. Once again, I said yes sir… Of course, my husband was grinning, sitting satisfactorily on the chair next to me, nodding in agreement. In his mind, I was sure he was singing the halleluiah chorus, thanking his God for this newfound fortune. I should mention that this was at our 7th year marriage counselling. Most couples, if they want to be honest will tell you that at the 7 year mark of marriage, the initial romance has fizzled out. By now couples know each other. Husbands have seen wives without make up, wives have smelt the fart

34

of their husbands. Different levels of manifestations have occurred. The in-laws may have come and gone, by now there are 2 to 3 kids running around, job loss has occurred, infidelity (Jezebel and Delilah Syndrome) sickness may be in the body, struggles with finances is very obvious. So you see, by the 7 year mark, marriages that will break by year 10 may have begun their descent, and marriages that will survive may have begun to have a foothold. We were trying to solidify our base, and we thought to try couples counselling to address this and of course with most marriages, love making, sex may have gone out the door and probably just happens once a month, a week, if there is sufficient anger and resentment in the marriage, sex will probably never happen. As an aside though, I do have a friend that when she fights with her husband, there is a particular turn on such that they are able to stop fighting, make crazy love there and then then get back to fighting – this is amazing. I am a more vindictive fighter. The moment we quarrel, the shop has closed. But I digress, so we left the counsellor’s office with varied emotional content. My husband was elated and especially expectant, and I was unmoved. I was even irritated by the bias. A man tells me to submit my body, what have I been doing if not LadiesCorner.ca – Summer 2020

submitting my body? I submitted the body for baby 1, then 2 then 3. I submit my body during breast feeding. Every day, when I am cooking cleaning, folding laundry, running around the grocery store and driving to work, my body is under submission to the house. Women have been dying for years because they have worked their body to death all in the name of submission. On the drive home, everything in me begun to revolt again. What nonsense! I began to manifest, I wanted to fight, so that I could padlock the thing but my husband, my husband the wise man, realised that I wanted to handle him, rose up to the occasion. He began to beg me. I said to him “Please lets fight, lets fight, I am ready, let me show you submission, after all, this is what you want.” By the time we got home, we could not enter the house. It would be difficult explaining to our kids why we were fighting or why we were mad at each other. So we began to drive around the neighborhood. Then faced the highway. And then, we began to talk. And we talked. And in that moment of heart to heart between husband and wife. The moment when two people who have been though thick and thin to-

Canada gether, began to bear their hearts out to one another. Such a precious moment, I felt something broke and then true conversation happened. We talked about our needs…. What he wanted, what I wanted. How I wanted it. What I would like to try, what he would like to try. There is something about talking about sex that just softens the atmosphere and the senses. So we came up with a plan – we were going to make love every day for 7 days straight. We were to start on the Monday night after the kids went to bed. •• Day 1 - I was giddy with excitement but a little nervous about my body. I could not wait to get home from work. I ordered dinner so that I would not be tired. I chased the children to bed by 8.30pm. By 9.15pm we were upstairs. Miracle happened. •• Day 2 - Woke up smiling, husband woke up smiling too. Went to work, husband sent love messages on text. He told me how much I meant to him, and how tonight we were going to move mountains. At 9.45pm, we moved mountains. •• Day 3 - Woke up speaking in tongues – my prayer life had been revived from calling him names from the night before. Husband came home with business ideas. Thoughts, ideas were flowing. Things were moving. By 10pm were role playing. Fire… eruption…. •• Day 4 – Woke up with body ache, not so good start to the day. Son was really sick. He threw up everywhere. Temperature was uncontrollable. Husband had to go to work. I had to call off from work, spent the day at the doctors, and taking care of our son. LadiesCorner.ca – Summer 2020

When husband came back, he was excited to see me as I was, but I was pre-occupied. I did not pay him the requisite attention needed. He was not happy. I noticed his hurt, I got defensive. He became upset. I went to son’s room to help him sleep. Slept off there, husband got angry that I left him hanging. We quarrelled. I expected him to understand. He was of the opinion that I put the kids before him. NO LOVE MAKING •• Day 5 - Son was still sick…. Daughter was beginning to cough. I was beginning to feel overwhelmed. Husband was still upset. He slept off watching TV. I was upset that he was not being supportive of me. He said he was tired. NO LOVE MAKING •• Day 6 – I decided that I wanted more and that I enjoyed the intimacy that was beginning to happen. I called husband for a discussion on how we may resuscitate things. We talked. And then mount Vesuvius erupted but not as we wanted •• Day 7 – we realized there was still a lot of more work to do. Husband says, we needed to do another 7 days marathon because we broke the chain. I agreed. In conclusion, sex in marriage is what you make of it Some people have a great sex-life, some just have maintenance sex. Really who am I to judge? I can only pray that all married couples find happiness and the love they need to remain together. Tayo is a Chartered Accountant on maternity leave Email: tayoelnathan@gmail.com

Life is for Living UFUOmA MUWHEN

I

am Ufuoma Muwhen, founder of NotJustYou, a non-profit Sickle Cell Support Organization. I am Ufuoma Muwhen, founder of NotJustYou, a non-profit Sickle Cell Support Organization. Sickle cell represents a group of hereditary red blood cell disorders. The disorder causes red blood cells to lose their normal round flexible shape and form ridged, sticky and crescent shaped blood cells. As a result of this irregular shape, these blood cells cannot properly move through blood vessels, reducing the amount of oxygen that is delivered to tissues. Individuals with sickle cell disease are subject to a plethora of symptoms that vary

from person to person and may even change over time. At the age of two, I was diagnosed with sickle cell disease. While my childhood was filled with lots of love and laughter, it was also accompanied by lots of pain. Sometimes, I felt like I was just like every other child, until I would get sick. Sickle cell is also a very stigmatized disease in many sub-saharan African nations. Talking about the sickle cell is deemed a very taboo subject, and the disorder is often connected to witchcraft, which frequently leaves many affected individuals feeling ostracized in their communities. Unfortunately, this mentality, rooted shame and stig-

ma, has made its way to the western world, resulting in a lack of community around people dealing with sickle cell. So growing up with sickle cell, you can often get fed up with the condition and feel like it is JUST YOU going through it. This, along with the brutal pain crises and significant lack of understanding of sickle cell in my immediate community, affected me. However, in the fall of 2016, I had a Reduced Intensity Bone Marrow Transplant and am now thankfully sickle cell free, however, even after my transplant those emotions of feeling misunderstood and isolated continued to follow me.

Canada

In the summer of 2018, I decided that I wanted to use my experiences to do something so that others do not have to feel the way I did. This led me to the inception of NotJustYou! NotJustYou is a support system for families and individuals affected by sickle cell. Our primary goal is to help eradicate the negative connotations and stigma associated with sickle cell, especially within the pan-african community. We are involved in multiple fundraising and support events throughout each year, increasing awareness and edu-

cation about sickle cell and providing those affected and their families with a nurturing, supportive and encouraging network to walk with them on their journey. You may be asking yourself now, what are ways can YOU help? •• If you have not been screened for sickle cell trait before, we at NotJustYou urge to please get screened! •• Donate! It is the generosity of individuals like yourself that make organizations like NotJustYou thrive. Just visit our

website and click the donate page! •• Donate organs! Yes monetary donations are important, but organ donations, specifically from peoples of colour is crucial. Blood transfusions and bone marrow transplant are common treatments for Sickle Cell Disease. Both of which are much more successful with use of organs from black donors.
