SON Ranked Among Best Master’s Programs in Nursing Go Grad, an online platform where aspiring graduate students can get the information they need to make knowledgeable decisions about their education, has released its third annual ranking for the 2015-16 Best Master’s Programs in Nursing. Indiana Wesleyan University’s School of Nursing has been included.

The ranking places IWU among “schools across the

country that have been setting the standard for the excellence of online nursing programs,” said Dan Schuessler, CEO and Founder of Go Grad. “These schools are ensuring quality nurses are entering [the] workforce.”

Ranked schools were evaluated based on the number of online graduate degrees available in related subject area, graduate tuition, availability of academic and career counseling services, and availability of job placement services.

Go Grad uses a Peer-Based Value score to compare the cost of each program to the cost of similar programs with the same qualitative score. Go Grad’s ranking for the 2015-16 school year and a complete look at the methodology can be found at gograd. org/online-masters-programs/nursing-degree. +

SON Offers Valuable Conferences written by Sara Byers Professional conferencing provides participants with an opportunity to engage in a professional faith-based community, networking, and enriching content. In April 2016 we hosted the Clinical Survival Skills Conference, featuring Suturing 101,12-Lead EKG Recognition, Laboratory Interpretation, and Primary Care Orthopedic Examination. In June 2016 we hosted the Innovations in Faith-Based Nursing Conference, featuring sessions on human trafficking, global health, and bioethics.

Halderman Takes On New Precepting-Related Role written by Barbara Ihrke (’93)

written by Carson Castleman Indiana Wesleyan’s Kentucky campuses in Florence, Lexington, and Louisville offer RN to BSN and MSN courses to over 200 nurses in the state.

Nurses complete their coursework through online, onsite, and blended formats. The nursing students enjoy many benefits from their time at IWU, but perhaps the most important outcome students often share is how their increased understanding of the Christian faith translates to being a better nurse. Nursing students often credit their completion of an IWU degree with an increase in compliments from patients who see their joy in what they are doing. Despite the restriction of spirituality in many workplaces today, students often admit to praying with at least one of their patients during their time at IWU. The faith and joy our instructors, staff, and chaplains have invested in our students are creating world changers in Kentucky, and these nurses are changing lives one patient at a time. Most importantly, our nurses gain a full understanding of how their stories connect with their patients’ stories and together ultimately become God’s story. We are committed to changing the face of nursing in Kentucky by continuing to provide a quality and well-rounded education that is rooted in rigor, excellence, and faith. +

The Role of Precepting in Education for IWU Students written by Martha Hawkins The last century has brought revolutionary changes and challenges to healthcare. Advanced practice nursing education is feeling the impact of some of these challenges, particularly as we try to meet our students’ needs for clinical education sites and preceptors.

Two changes currently impacting advanced practice nursing education include a predicted healthcare provider shortage by 2025 (up to 31,000 primary care healthcare providers and up to 63,700 in specialty services) and changes in healthcare providers’ work locations (with the majority of providers now employed in system-based practices, administrators dictate the rules under which a provider practices).

What does this mean for IWU nurse practitioner (NP) students?

First, providers in system-based practices may not have the freedom to choose to precept students or to choose from which universities and colleges they can host students.

Second, productivity requirements for providers impede students. Most administrators of system-based practices perceive that students decrease their providers’ productivity. Many providers who previously served as preceptors no longer feel they can keep up with their practice requirements while precepting students, reducing the pool of potential preceptors.

cal preceptors by adding language to the Kentucky Educational Statutes for nurse practitioner programs stating the program must “secure all necessary preceptors to students enrolled in the program. A student shall not be required to obtain their own preceptor.” While Kentucky is the first state to enact such a requirement, there is some indication other states may follow suit.

This reduction is occurring alongside a rise in the number of nurse practitioner and physician assistant programs. Practically, this means our NP students are competing for preceptors with students from other schools and from other healthcare disciplines, including physician assistant programs and medical residencies. Competition for available preceptors has become intense. In Kentucky alone, there are twelve in-state nurse practitioner programs competing for clinical education sites.

IWU is committed to meeting students’ needs. We’re working with the IWU Alumni Association to address the difficulty in finding preceptors and to meet the regulatory requirements of the Kentucky Educational Statute by building a unique program that develops relationships within the system-based practices and calls on our alumni to help us meet the needs for clinical education sites and preceptors. Our alumni are our greatest resource in this.

Traditionally, at most schools of nursing, NP students have been responsible for finding their own clinical education sites and preceptors. However, in fall 2015, the Kentucky Board of Nursing addressed the difficulty in finding clini-

Dysautonomia Is Not Rare; It Is Rarely Known written by Kaylee Sills (’16) Dysautonomia is a broad term used for disorders of the autonomic nervous system. It is estimated that over 70 million people worldwide suffer from various forms of dysautonomia, making dysautonomia seven times more prevalent than the much more widely known Parkinson’s disease. Healthcare providers can expect to encounter dysautonomia disorders with a variety of symptoms during their careers.

My particular form of dysautonomia is postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). My sophomore year of nursing school I became suddenly ill. I experienced GI symptoms, racing heart rates, blood pressure fluctuations, and severe brain fog, among other symptoms. Over a year later I received my official diagnosis through the Mayo Clinic. Essentially, most of my unregulated, unconsciously operative bodily functions are no longer properly controlled.

Quality of life for patients with POTS is comparable to patients with kidney failure on dialysis [1, 2] and comparable to simultaneously having both chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart failure [3].

After my own diagnosis, I reached out to dysautonomia foundations to share my story. Ainsley Glenn, Founding Director of the Dysautonomia Advocacy Foundation, responded to my inquiry. He put me in contact with The Dysautonomia Project to assist with publishing a book by the same name alongside many physicians. I contributed two chapters discussing dysautonomia treatment options for both patients and physicians.

Eventually, I was named Assistant Director at the Dysautonomia Advocacy Foundation. Never Stop Moving Forward written by Sarah Greentree (’16) Her hometown had been bombed, the Serbian Army had invaded, and the bridge to her parents’ home was destroyed.

As a 22-year-old Kindergarten teacher and mother of two young children, Dijana was surrounded by war and refugees in her hometown of Modrica, Bosnia.

When Dijana received word from her father that the bridge was patched enough for travel, she began packing. “We had two kids. We didn’t have much. We had a couple of boxes of powdered milk that I just made for them.

So they had something to eat, but I didn’t even think of myself much.”

For a month and half, they lived in her parents’ basement with her parents, younger siblings, and her grandparents.

By listening to the bombing patterns from nearby towns, her family determined outside safety could only come a few hours a day.

On June 14, 1992, Dijana and her family heard airplanes overhead. Her parents’ town was the next target of Serbian air raids. Uncertain of the home most likely to be hit, the family chose to stay in her grandparents’ basement.

From the small window of the basement door, Dijana’s father watched his home collapse. When the bombing stopped and the family finally emerged from the basement, everything was gone.

The home above them had collapsed as well.

They had to flee. There was no chance of survival if they didn’t. “I grabbed my babies, my nine-year-old sister, two bags, no food.

My dad gave me all the money he had left, about 15-16 marka [about $9],” Dijana recalled. And they fled.

By the time she reached the Croatian border after the air raids, more than 100 people had already gathered at the crossing. Her first attempt to cross was denied, but a new shift in guards allowed her through on her second try. After a month in a Croatian refugee camp, the Red Cross provided Dijana passage into Germany. She and her children were finally safe. For the next six and a half years, Dijana worked as a paramedic until she received papers she was being deported back to Bosnia. Though the war was over, Bosnia was still unsafe territory. The memory of the war was haunting, and a Serbian family was now living in her home. After relentlessly pleading her case of unsafe circumstances to the Red Cross, Dijana was granted passage to the United States.

In February of 2000, Dijana came to Cleveland, Ohio, as a refugee. Speaking no English, she worked as a welder to provide for her family. Every night, Dijana came home from work and studied the dictionary in order to teach herself English. Six months later, she passed her EKG test to become an EKG technician. She worked as a technician for the next six years. Eventually, determined to expand her knowledge, Dijana became an RN in 2009 and then chose to pursue an associate’s in nursing, graduating from Lorain County Community College in 2012. She is now enrolled in IWU’s RN-BSN program online.

Asked if there was a message she would like to deliver to those who would read her story, she replied without pause or hesitation, “Never stop moving forward. Nobody should ever give up.”

As a nurse, Dijana has been able to share her life experience with some of her patients. She recalled a 29-year-old mother in the ICU after emergency surgery who was suffering from depression.

Dijana shared her life story with the patient and noted the beautiful country we are blessed to live in, the gift of the opportunities we are able to have, and the future that waits for us all. Dijana encouraged her patient to never give up and keep moving forward.

Three months after the patient left the hospital, she came back to Dijana to give her a guardian angel pin. The former patient decided to sign up for college courses to pursue her education.

Hearing the purpose and perseverance of Dijana’s story gave this woman the courage to find purpose in her own story. +

Inside the Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Program: One Student’s Story written by Sara Byers On April 18 and 19, 2016, the Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing program (PMHNP) held its first residency at the Marion residential campus. Fifteen students from across four different states came together to begin the program.

During the residency, I was able to have lunch with the group to discuss why practicing nurses would choose the PMHNP at Indiana Wesleyan University. As conversation picked up, I learned the story of student Adria Thornburgh from Indianapolis, Indiana.

Adria entered the nursing world to break a generational poverty cycle and to provide for her son as a single mother. She’s successfully worked hard to provide a different life for her family.

Nursing has given her a wide variety of experiences, including obstetrics, nursing education, and a host of other roles.

Along the way, Adria saw that mental health issues permeated every field of nursing she encountered, and she also saw the social stigma and the turmoil— those who are suffering are underdogs.

Adria’s heightened awareness of these challenges comes from a deep and sorrowful place. As a young girl, her family relied upon her to care for an aunt suffering from schizophrenia. The illness took a toll on the family at large, but with proper treatment and medication, her aunt is now functioning well.

Adria also told me of a childhood friend named Crystal. As an adult, Adria looks back and recognizes indicators of multiple personality disorder or bipolar disorder in her friend, though Crystal was never diagnosed. Her mental health issues went untreated, and she suffered an untimely death at the age of 25.

Adria’s compassion came across even more clearly when she discussed the

way those who deal with mental health issues are commonly misunderstood.

She offered the example of her son.

She saw her son in agony from an early age and recalled story after story of the struggle of parenting a child suffering from mental health issues. Pressure and stress from mainstream education had become overwhelming. Eventually she chose to enroll her son in a school more suited to his learning style and functions. The change in her son was almost immediate. Those trained and educated in the specific issues her son had were able to bring about change for the better. No more agony. No more struggle. No more exhaustion.

Because of these experiences and relationships, Adria is now enrolled in the

IWU PMHNP to make changes for the better. She spoke about her strong desire to fight for the underdog, to be able to do research, and to find solutions.

Working up the courage to begin the program has been a process for Adria, and now that she’s in it, she’s taking it one day at a time with the mindset of “I can do this.”

What Is Human Trafficking? written by Kris Currier (’07) This is the first article in a series on human trafficking. Here we lay the groundwork for the larger series by defining the issue. Our definition comes from the Federal Strategic Action Plan on Services for Victims of Human Trafficking in the United States 2013-2017.

To the United States Federal Government, human trafficking is considered transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for the purpose of a commercial sex act in which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such act has not attained 18 years of age; or the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for the purpose of labor or services, through the use of force, fraud, or coercion for the purpose of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage, or slavery.

It is important to have an understanding of what human trafficking is, since it is happening in our country, state, and likely even in our towns.

Individuals are at risk for being trafficked if there is an area of vulnerability such as poverty, abuse, abandonment, or lack of education. Traffickers look for areas of vulnerability in a potential victim and then exploit the individual for their own gain. As awareness of this issue is raised, there are more materials available for the public to educate themselves on this topic. +

Opportunities to Support the School of Nursing Panoptic Ophthalmoscopes written by Darla Gowan (’86) The ability to perform a comprehensive physical exam is the foundation for family nurse practitioners (FNPs). This requires hours of practice and the right equipment to enhance the ability to assess the patient. FNPs use many tools to complete this objective. One is the ophthalmoscope. This is an invaluable tool used to assess a patient for eye disorders as well as secondary effects of hypertension, diabetes, and other chronic diseases.

Will you partner with the IWU SON to place this tool in more of our students’ hands?

As part of the training here at IWU, students take a class to learn physical exam skills and practice in a controlled classroom setting before beginning their clinical rotations. Tools such as the ophthalmoscope are used and skills are honed. Being able to see the inner structures of the eye is difficult, and many students get frustrated because they are unsuccessful at seeing what the instructor is describing. While many types of ophthalmoscopes are acceptable, the panoptic ophthalmoscope makes it easier for the practitioner as it gives a panoramic view of the eye structures and allows the practitioner to see five times the surface area that the normal scope allows.

The images are also magnified by 25% compared to a standard

scope. This can greatly increase the success for students learning this new skill.

As educators, we would love the opportunity for our students to be able to practice with and use this tool in their Physical Assessment class. The cost for one of these ophthalmoscopes is $815.

We’d like to provide at least one panoptic ophthalmoscope to each of the Regional Centers that host our assessment courses (Marion, Greenwood, Louisville, Florence, and Columbus).

Around the World China ’16!:

Our Transcultural Nursing Practicum Experience written by Jill Steinke (’81) Since 2012, the IWU Pre-licensure Division and the Shenyang Medical College (SMC) School of Nursing have participated in an academic exchange program. Faculty and students from the two programs visit each other’s schools for a two-week period to experience each other’s nursing education, healthcare systems, and culture.

This last January, nursing professor Fu Rong brought seven nursing students from SMC to IWU. In May, Dr. Ihrke (’93) and I led a team of nine IWU nursing students to Shenyang for their transcultural nursing practicum. We had become close friends while the SMC group was at IWU in January. Already having friends in Shenyang to host us was such an enormous blessing. It made us even more excited to make the trip.

Every day in China was filled with enlightening and exciting educational experiences. It was also a trip full of wonderful surprises. Student Bria Coil described our first surprise the first morning in Shenyang: We started off the morning with watermelon, seaweed, steamed bread, and chopsticks, and then arrived at the [SMC] Sports Meeting Games Ceremony just in time to jump in [the parade] line with the international students {see photo 1 on next page}. Imagine my surprise when I thought we were merely observing the festivities and,

instead, [our SMC hosts] slapped hats on us, handed us flags, and said, “Do you know how to march?”

SMC recruits international students from several African countries. Through connections I made on the 2014 trip with the leaders of the African students’ Christian group, we organized a combined Saline Process Workshop {2}. Student Allison Schifeling described the experience: We participated in a Saline Process Workshop put on by our leaders. Everyone was shy at the beginning because we didn’t know each other, but after a while it was amazing to be in China but converse with peers from Uganda, Zambia, Nigeria, and Ghana. We talked about how to shine Christ’s love in the workplace and break down barriers and stigma around discussing spirituality in the healthcare field.

A house church service on Sunday morning was also an important experience for us. Bria shared, The house was small, but we managed to cram every inch with people. It felt strange to not be having church in a church, but the experience of worshiping and learning together in someone’s living room was incredible. We were told during our orientation that religious persecution is present in China, and this experience reminded me just how much I take my

The next week was packed with activities.

We went to a hospital, a rehabilitation center (affiliated with Joni & Friends), and a retirement center where the residents taught us to make dumplings {3}. This was so much fun and there was so much laughter. Additionally, our team presented a lecture in a nursing class and we performed in the International Nurse’s Day Celebration Program {4} on May 12 (Florence Nightingale’s birthday).

Lauren Butz describes one experience in the nursing lab class {5} we attended: The students were learning to start IVs, so we got to join them. It was so hard to try to follow the instructions since everything was in Chinese. The students, after they had practiced once, allowed us to practice as well. They worked their hardest to get us to understand what we were supposed to do. It was a little frustrating not to be able to understand them and them not being able to understand us.

But we used Pleco, our translator app, and they used theirs, which made it much easier and less frustrating. Sometimes the kids would wrinkle their noses when we weren’t understanding each other, and that’s when the translators would come out to help us all.

Honestly, I love not being able to communicate perfectly. It brings people together in a different way, a way that relies on body move-

ments and facial expressions rather than eloquent words and proper sentence structure.

We also had the privilege to serve while there. Lauren Butz described a memorable experience:

On the way home, we took the bullet train to Beijing where we spent two days sightseeing. We even got to sing “Happy Birthday� to one of our students on the Great Wall of China {6}.

We visited the orphanage today. Danielle and I were in the room with some of the more severely disabled children. Some were still fussy, so we kept singing quietly, and the one who had been crying suddenly stopped.

He had calmed down and rested his head on Danielle’s hand. It was a lovely moment, and I know that these kids had no idea what we were singing, but I like to believe that God

Everyone felt that we were so fortunate to go to Shenyang, and the best part about it was the people we met and the friendships we made. We are grateful for the time we had and for the ongoing relationships we will be able to maintain and grow as we continue this program. +

Building a Two-Way Bridge in India

written by Ruth Eby (’86) I don’t often travel with representatives of different IWU programs, but in March, I did just that. Led by Rev. Ben Ward (’13) from Global Partners and Dr. Lena Crouso from IWU, I traveled with three other faculty and two students to India. Our purpose was to investigate how IWU can partner with the Wesleyan Church in India to “build a bridge” in India from Romans 7 to Romans 8. In Romans 7, Paul battles with the law of sin enslaving him; in Romans 8:1-2 he declares, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.”

While on our trip, Rev. Kayla Crouso (’11), a School of Theology and Ministry faculty, shared a message of hope at the Wesleyan Church in Pardi, Gujarat, India. She declared that God can set us free in Christ, transforming our lives so that we can enter into His “big salvation.” This was a call to holiness in action and a call to care for one another. As individuals from a variety of professions—nursing, ministry, business, social work, education, and so many more—we all have a role in the work of representing Christ by caring for the least of these.

During our travels, we visited well-established churches with large congregations and a small, one-room church that is the only church in a city of about 30,000 people. We spent hours talking with local leaders about how each of us could use our strengths to serve one another. We discussed how our partnership could equip people for ministry, whether that ministry is in the church, local businesses, schools, or healthcare.

These conversations opened our eyes more fully to the need, but more importantly, to the possibilities. When we first talked about working with the missionaries in a rural city, they

quickly understood the need for ministerial training, social work, and even family counseling, but they didn’t see how nursing and business could fit into their ministry. However, in continued conversation, the missionaries talked about how the people would pray without “taking action.” One story tugged on my heart. A woman spilled boiling milk on her feet, and rather than clean and dress the wounds before venturing out, she walked the dirt roads to the missionaries’ home, in her sandals, to ask for prayer. When the missionary saw the woman’s burned feet, she did pray, but she also took action. She cleansed the wounds, applied salve, and bandaged the woman’s feet, then took the woman to the hospital. If this woman had been educated in first aid and when to consult a healthcare provider, she could have prevented the additional pain from not immediately treating the burns.

After discussing stories like this, the missionaries began to see how programs like nursing and business could be instrumental in a transformative partnership. We have an opportunity to hear the needs of the people, partner with them, and participate in educational opportunities that can bring us each into Romans 8, where together we can freely choose to follow Christ’s command to care for the least of these.

This trip was the first step in establishing a presence for IWU in India. This partnership with the Wesleyan Church in India is being called the India Two-Way Bridge in honor of the movement Paul describes from an enslavement to sin to the freedom found in Christ. It is about IWU learning with, from, and about the people in India. It is about serving alongside our brothers and sisters in India and includes learning how to provide for the needs of students from India on the U.S. residential campus. It is about IWU living out its strategic plan to become a global learning community. It is about living out the mission and vision to provide a Christ-centered education preparing students to be world changers. +

Serving Our Community written by Kelsey Mitchener The School of Nursing faculty and staff serve their churches and communities in a variety of board and leadership roles.

In their churches, they are ministry directors, elders, camp administrators, Bible study leaders, and more. They volunteer for committees, councils, boards, and task forces for dozens of organizations, from the YMCA, NASA, and the Indiana Dream Center to the Salvation Army and the local food pantry. They lend their nursing expertise toward journal review, CPR instruction, and programs like Bridges to Health, and they support nursing societies.
