Project Area

THE PLACE The part of Martesana Canal between Bastioni di Porta Nuova (Porta Nuova Ramparts) and Cassina de`Pomm was decreed by Urban Planning Regulations 1953 with the goal to redefine the traffic conditions of the area and to connect to the context the newly realized Directional Center . The Martesana stream was enclosed with a reinforced concrete armature covered up by the roadway. Still nowadays water coming from Adda river flows under the road, along the whole Melchiore Gioia street till ramparts, deviated then on the east from its natural course and poured to Redenfossi which flows along the Spanish Walls circle. The Martesana Canal was culverted at the end of the 60ies. The urban definition of this part of the city after the assumed conformation remained unchanged till the 90ies, that is till its gradual loss of the directional center function. For the last decade the area became of the growing interest for investments which makes it one of the most active places undergoing urban transformation along with the realization of a new seat of Lombardia Region, Garibaldi-Repubblica Project and Giardini di Porta Nuova (Porta Nuova Gardens).

Milan is set in the heart of the Po Basin of northern Italy, halfway across the immense plain spreading between the Ticino and Adda rivers, the Navigli System covers this area between the rivers. The Navigli System, an artificial hydrographic system, is formed by three main canals: Naviglio Grande, Naviglio Martesana, Naviglio Pavese. The Naviglio Grande starts where it draws water from the Ticino river and ends in the dock Darsena of Porta Ticinese in Milan. The Naviglio Martesana flows from Adda river to Milan at Cascina de’ Pomm and ends up in San Marco. Martesana is still in existence until the presence of Cassina de’ Pomm, at the junction with Melchiorre Gioia Street it disappears underground following the route of Melchiorre Gioia itself southwards. In the past it passed through the Fossa dell’Incoronata and the Laghetto of San Marco to connect with the Inner Ring (Fossa Interna). Today, after merging with the Seveso river, the underground course becomes the Cavo Redefossi in the vicinity of Porta Nuova, runs under the Cerchia dei Bastioni.

INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP OF URBAN AND ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN VIII edition CONTEMPORARY CITIES AND URBAN REGENERATION - Milan HIDDEN CULTURAL ROUTE The main theme of the project is focused on the definition of a functions system located along the Melchiorre Gioia axis. Therefore, the reopening of Martesana channel has a landscape value but also becomes a place of proximity services to the district and pole of interest for the whole city. Along the canal, are inserted a series of functions related to aspects of fun and recreation: sport, relax, for children and for the rest of the inhabitants; the system provides for the possibility of implementing these functions as well as the variation in their time. In order to obtain an adequate densification, allowing a use as more intensive for the space, it is assumed to work in two ways: - by realizing hypogean galleries that run parallel to the channel, for redouble the useful space; - by extending the project in adjacent empty areas to the channel, obtaining wide places in which realize squares.

CONNECTIONS The project propose to realize a complex linear system along the Martesana channel. It is described by double levels (water level, roadway level): - the first is characterized by a double commercial gallery (where the canal is placed on the center). This new level gives the possibility to host investments and the relocation of functions related for services, retail, recreation and refreshment. - the second becomes a linear park, providing to the city a new place to stop. The two levels are connected through a series of walkways that allow to move from one dimension to another, from one side to the other, making the project as a connection system between the channel and adjacent areas.

INTERSECTIONS The project elaborated in the Workshop presents a series of suggestions with the intent to show how reopening the Martesana channel would be able to change the value of the urban landscape for this part of the city in a positive way. The main thought is to question the relapse that a similar initiative would have to the context. The reopened channel and the extension of the area create links with the different urban episodes that follow along the stretch, useful ‘occasions’ to implement the urban quality of these places (“Intersections”). The project, rather than providing architectural solutions (through the nature of the canal artifact), moves by pointing out the potential contaminants and the potential that this initiative could outweigh to the city. By way of example, the project proposes naturalistic and playful solutions through the use of water and green squares.

WATER LIFE The reopening of the Martesana channel returns to the city of Milan a peculiar aspect of its history and urban identity. The work arises from a profound reflection on the landscaping value of an urban regeneration initiative, deepening the importance of the water element not only as a natural element but as an element of environment building. Therefore, the canal is considered not only as a mere hydraulic product, but also exemplifies its architectural potential from the ecological aspect, from the study of the quality of water, to the shape and materials that make up shores. Along Melchiorre Gioia axis, the project proposes the insertion of a system defined by natural elements, plants and essences, which reflect and change according to seasons and weather conditions. SLOW LIVING During the days of Workshop, through observations and the study of Milan channels system, it is carried out an analysis of the project area of Via Melchiorre Gioia. The project has absorbed the frenzy of the environment, the confusion, elaborating the absolute lack of a place to stay along the axis, that cover a distance of 2km. Starting from the Administration’s proposal to link the re-opening of channels to a navigation system, it is clear that the project aims to define comfort places for the inhabitants, delivering the idea of a ‘slow’ style, that is to enjoy the landscape through a sweet and slow transport mode.

ACTIVE WATER The aim of the project is to taking advantage from what is near to Via Melchiorre Gioia to empower the street itself, creating a linear park, which will develop along the main course of La Martesana Channel. The linear park will stretch on one side of the road for all the length of the channel, multiplying the walkable levels to give the visitors a different relation with the water and the landscape of the area and protecting him from cars and traffic. We found three symbolic spots along the walkway to establish a more specific relationship with the site: at the end of the channel, near Torre Galfa and in the confluence between Seveso River and La Martesana channel. In each point the water gains strength thanks to simple and recognizable elements that sign the place expressing the behavior of the water and guiding the view of the visitors through the elements that define the site.

LINEAR PARK Seizing the reopening of the Martesana channel as a pretext for redesigning, through the theme of green, the project proposes to allocate an urban park to the area. It consist by a linear park that, starting from the Melchiorre Gioia axis, runs along the shapes of the canal. The design element is its extension on the “threedimensional” plan: besides marking its path, it also extends to the vertical plane of the buildings facades on the axis: the design response to the redevelopment of this area is to give visual continuity through the exclusive use of a natural color.
