Long-serving Shanklin Town Council member Jon Gilbey has surprisingly resigned his position with immediate effect. After he made the shock announcement, he told the IW Observer he felt he could do more good, not only for Shanklin, but for other areas of the Isle of Wight, without any political interference.

Mr Gilbey became a Town Councillor in 2005, and during his time he was also the town’s Mayor for four years, the longest term any Shanklin Mayor has served.

Mr Gilbey, who has always been an Independent Councillor, said: “Resigning is something I have had to think long and hard about, and there are a number of factors that brought me to make this decision. I have become increasingly concerned how certain personal egos and politicalisation of town councils, not just Shanklin, have gone over the years.

“I have always felt that town and parish councils should be totally independent of any political persuasion. You should be there to represent the people of the town or parish, and I feel it has now got

to a point where it has become a bit silly as far as politics are concerned.

“From my point of view, I feel I am of more use and help outside the political arena, not just to Shanklin, but to other area on the Island, by not being involved in politics.”

During his time as Shanklin Town Council, Mr Gilbey oversaw the takeover from the IW Council, and the development and upkeep, of the town’s public toilet facilities. Vast improvements have already been made to the sites at Falcon Cross near the town centre, and to the Tower Cottage Gardens toilet block, close to Shanklin Old Village.

Three more blocks in the town are due to be developed in the future, including upgrades for two on Shanklin Esplanade. Mr. Gilbey claims it would be easier now for him to work as a noncouncillor on those projects, as he would have no direct conflicts of interest. He said: “I have never been political and I never would be. Unfortunately a lot of politicians these days seem to be there for themselves and not to represent their electorate, which is sad, but that is the way if has gone. Councillors should be doing the best they can for everyone,

not be politically driven.”

Mr. Gilbey is already working with several other town and parish councils across the Island who are taking similar undertakings to maintain their public toilets, including those in Newport.

He continued: “There are other town and parish councils that I have done plans for their toilet blocks, and I realised I could do that off my back as me, rather than as a Town Councillor.

I am pleased to do it, because I can pass on to them the knowledge and experience from what I did in Shanklin, and there is no reason why every other town on the Isle of Wight cannot have what Shanklin has.”

Mr. Gilbey, originally from Sheffield, moved to the Island in 1982, and has run the Paramount Cafe in Shanklin for the past 29 years. He was also an Isle of Wight Councillor for a total of four years, and held the portfolio for several major contracts, including the PFI contract with Island Roads.

Mr. Gilbey’s resignation leaves a vacancy on Shanklin Town Council, and normally there would have to be an election. Otherwise, to fill it, it would have to be a member co-opted by the remaining councillors.

Red Funnel parking update...

Red Funnel are set to help expedite refunds of parking fines incorrectly issued by Premier Park at their Red Jet terminal in Fountain Yard, Cowes between January and April 2019 in circumstances where Islanders feel they have been unfairly treated.

As previously reported some people using Fountain Yard to drop off or collect Red Jet passengers have received £100 fines from Premier Park Ltd. A 15-minute time limit is in force, but Red Funnel stipulate there should be a minimum 10-minute ‘grace period’ before a fine is issued.

Following our story (June 21) about Caroline Ross, who won an appeal against a fine, the IW Observer was contacted by readers who felt they had been fined unfairly.

Lawdit Solicitors, Newport, offered to act free of charge for those unfairly fined, as their opinion was that the fines breached contract law. The IW Observer sent Lawdit’s legal summary to Red Funnel.

This week the IW Observer met Red Funnel Chief Executive Fran Collins, who defended the decision to enforce waiting time limits in

the yard, saying they had received complaints about congestion and traffic must be moving, pointing out that over 98 per cent of drivers were unaffected.

However, she quickly agreed that Red Funnel would step in and help compensate those who received fines wrongly issued by Premier Park in the first 4 months of this year saying: “It’s very important to me that Red Funnel treats our customers fairly. We became aware that a small number of people received fines where Premier Park was not honouring the grace period. Although Red Funnel does not receive any income from those parking fines we want to help right any wrongs, because we care about our customers and it’s just the right thing to do. If any IW Observer readers were affected and were fined for a stay of 25 minutes or less between January and April 2019, we want to hear from them and will take care of their refund. We also encourage customers who filed an appeal with Premier Park and feel their appeal was wrongly denied, to get in touch with us too.

While the correct way to dispute parking

fines is to contact Premier Park direct, we are prepared to act as a conduit where necessary, and help customers facing specific exceptional circumstances to get the recourse they may deserve.”

Ms Collins confirmed there is now a minimum of 10 minutes ‘grace time’ which is adjusted if a Red Jet runs late. She also agreed that more could have been done to make people aware that there were new enforcement arrangements, particularly as “people don’t necessarily notice new signs that appear as they are going about their daily routine”.

She will also look again at some other points raised by Lawdit solicitors. She said: “I’m glad these points have been brought to my attention. This is not in our direct control, but I want our customers to be treated fairly by our contractors. I will be raising these issues with them to find a fair and reasonable way forward.” She added that anybody with extenuating circumstance who feels they are in danger of being issued with a ticket should contact a member of the terminal staff and

explain the problem.

The refund offer came too late for our reader, Mrs Joice Hamilton of Newport who won her appeal to independent POPLA (Parking on private land appeals) and had her fine dismissed. She said: “I’m glad Red Funnel are refunding fines wrongly issued, but this has put many people through a lot of worry, cost and inconvenience. Red Funnel should think again about using Premier Park, as searching the internet shows what sort of company they are, and Red Funnel’s reputation is at stake. What the IW Observer and Lawdit Solicitors have achieved is fantastic.”

Anybody who received a fine for stays of 25 minutes or less in Fountain Yard between January and April or whose appeal to Premier Park has been denied (where they feel the appeal should have been approved) should send details along with all appropriate documentation to Red Funnel by e-mail to customerservices@redfunnel.co.uk headed Fountain Yard Support.

The Sea Eagles have landed White tailed sea eagles are set to soar above the Isle of Wight for the first time in 240 years in an attempt to reintroduce the bird along the South coast after it was hunted to extinction in the 1780s. Six young birds have been released this week at a secret location believed to be close to Newtown. The much anticipated release took place after the birds had been through an acclimatisation process over the last four weeks.

This is the first stage of a £250,000 five-year project by the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation (RDWF), who chose the Island as an ideal habitat with many nesting places for the raptors, whose usual diet includes fish and water birds. The central location was also key to the choice, as it will allow the birds to spread out across Southern England.

A licence has been granted allowing the release over five years of 60 birds, which will be monitored with satellite tags.

Although they are magnificent birds with an impressive wing span of up to 8 feet and will be a draw for tourists, not everyone is happy about

the reintroduction of the species, with sheep farmers in particular apprehensive about the possible impact on their flocks. Sea eagles have been photographed carrying off lambs and it has been reported that a single farm on the West Coast of Scotland has lost over 180 lambs to eagles over six years.

A study by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds found that lamb was present in up to half of the sites used by the birds in Scotland. Fulmars were their most common prey species, which only appear here in the summer in small numbers and curlews, one of the most iconic of British waterbirds were also being taken.

Keep Newtown for the Birds (KNB), a conservation group set up to protect the Island’s sole National Nature Reserve is worried the sea eagles will target wildlife there, including the curlews, which has a relatively stable population here. Their spokesman James Allaway said there was a ‘strong possibility’ sea eagles released on the Island would settle at Newtown. He said: “For many years ospreys have dropped by on their migration route to West

Africa. If sea eagles also arrive they are bound to attract still more visitors to this internationally important wildlife sanctuary, already suffering the consequences of an increasing human footprint intrusion.” He went on: “To give an idea of the impact sea eagles may have here, you only have to remember that the Isle of Wight and Solent area is a small fraction of the size of the Western Isles of Scotland. Lewis and Harris alone is six times as big.”

Tony Juniper, the chairman of Natural England, welcomed the eagle’s reintroduction and hoped they would boost visitor numbers to the Isle of Wight.

Tim Mackrill an ornithologist with the RDWF said it was difficult to predict where the eagles will settle in the future, with an expected range of 50 km from the release site in the first few years so he thought it unlikely all would stay on the Island.

Roy Dennis pointed to an increase in tourism for the Scottish Isle of Mull and to Kerry in Ireland where a number of sea eagles were released in 2012.

Ryde seafront rescue Ventnor and Bembridge Coastguard Rescue teams, Ryde Inshore Rescue, Ryde Lifeguards and the IW Ambulance service were called out to give assistance to a number of swimmers who got into trouble at Ryde seafront on Thursday evening, August 22.

Four people including three children were rescued by Lifeguards and Ryde Lifeboat.

All four casualties attended St Mary’s Hospital as a precautionary measure as they had swallowed water leading to fears of secondary drowning.

Dog dies after attack at Ventnor Carnival A miniature Schnauzer suffered fatal injuries after being attacked by another dog before the start of Ventnor’s illuminated carnival on the evening of Saturday, August 17.

Despite attempts by a mobile vet to save little Zappy he sadly died from his injuries. The owner of the brown and black husky-type dog that attacked the tiny dog did not stay at the scene and Lin Cato, Zappy's owner fears that a similar attack could happen to a child. There was great sympathy for Lin on social media and outrage that the owner of the husky type dog did not stop to determine the tragic consequences of the attack.

The incident occurred just before 9.30pm near to Stripped restaurant on the High Street.

Anyone with information relating to the incident, such as the identity of the owners of the offending dog are asked to contact Police on 101 or the RSPCA branch on 01983 840287.

Prehistoric plant parents A prehistoric plant has produced male and female cones outdoors in Britain for what is believed to be the first time in millions of years. Two cycads, a type of primitive tree that was widespread in the Solent area in the Jurassic period and even before, up to 120m years ago. It is now native to Japan and usually found in the UK only as an ornamental houseplant. A plant in the Ventnor Botanic Gardens, in the shelter of the undercliff has now produced the first female cone on record, raising the prospect of being able to transfer pollen and generate seed. In Japan the plants are believed to be pollenated by beetles, but the female flour in Ventnor will be pollenated by hand in around a week's time.

According to Chris Kidd, curator at the gardens it is a worrying sign of climate change. He said: "For the first time in 60m years in the UK we’ve got a male cone and a female cone at the same time which will enable us to produce seeds.

It's very exciting and I'm looking forward to making history, but that is twinged with great concerns about the climate change that is bringing it about."

"This is not something that’s happened with a short-term mild spell. It’s a longer-term warming which is making these things happen. Here on the Island the Botanic Garden is the mildest place on the Island, so this is a precursor of what could happen in Island gardens in 20 years or so.

“Twenty years ago we couldn’t have grown them. In 1986 the cycads at the gardens were very badly damaged by cold weather, since then we've not had any conditions even close to giving them any problems. These are relics from flora that dominated the earth when dinosaurs were here, their demise led to the arrival of flowering plants, but that was a catastrophic event, and I can see a similar change happening before my eyes right now.”

New drive-thru and gym approved at Coppins Bridge Change of use planning permission to include a drive-thru restaurant and a 24-hour gym has been approved at a retail park in Newport.

Approval has been given to make changes to part of the existing ground floor of the complex at Coppins Bridge to provide a drive-thru restaurant, a 24hour gym and two flexible use spaces.

Planning officers recommended Isle of Wight Council approve the scheme, and said the proposed development would see two large, vacant retail units brought back into use, and that their flexible usage would ‘ensure viability of the wider site into the future’.

The Gym Group and Burger King are the two operators of the 24-hour gym and drive-thru restaurant respectively and their openings will result in a number of employment opportunities.

Kate Simpson, of planning consultants Pegasus Group said: “We were extremely pleased to secure approval

for this scheme on behalf of our clients, Otium Properties.

“The vitality and viability of the town centre will be enhanced through the proposal and attracting The Gym Group and Burger King demonstrates investor confidence in the potential growth for Newport, which will act as a catalyst for further regeneration and investment.

“The Gym Group have indicated their proposal would result in the generation of approximately six staff, and Burger King would seek to employ circa 50 staff (full and part time).”

Ashley Blake, of the developer,

specialist leisure investers Otium, said: “Otium specialises in improving leisure assets via active asset management and adding the Island’s first national multiple gym operator and first Burger King is part of our plan to widen the offer of this dominant leisure site.

You're never too old...

You’re only 88 once – and for Newport resident Eileen Clark the big day fell on Saturday, August 17. Like most of us Eileen wanted her friends and family around her to celebrate, so a couple of days beforehand she had a ‘really lovely’ party at home with all her nearest and dearest. That over and done with the real celebrations got underway.

Many great-grandmothers would purse their lips at the very idea of younger generations getting tattoos.

Not Eileen, she decided if you can’t beat them you shouldn’t just join them – why not outdo them?

“Some of the girls have a rose tattoo,” she says: “but they’re black outlines, I wanted a red one.” So on Friday, the day before her birthday she got exactly what she wanted, a bright red rose tattoo on her hand. Asked if it hurt she says: “Not much, but it was a bit sore over the knuckle. I only swore once.”

The name Rose spans five generations of Eileen’s family, originating with her Italian aunt. It’s Eileen and her daughter Julie's middle name, it appears on the birth certificates of four of her granddaughters, and little Lily Rose, one of her 13 great-grandchildren also bears the traditional family name.

Party over, tattoo healing nicely, Saturday dawned. What next? Eileen had never in her life ridden a horse, and on her birthday she quite fancied

Terrier cut free from iron gate putting that right. With around 30 of her friends and family she set off to the Island Riding Centre.

Meeting handsome skewbald Warburton, Eileen was instantly smitten and looking forward to her ride around the paddock.

However, mounting him was not straightforward.

“You see I’m quite small and the steps weren’t very high”, Eileen explains “so my son and grandson hoiked me up on his back. After that it was lovely, I really enjoyed it.”

Another family party followed to round off her birthday, this time at Bluebells Café, at Briddlesford Lodge Farm which Eileen loved.

“We had tea and delicious cakes and I had a wonderful time with all my family

around me. Just right to round off the day.”

Her daughter Julie summed things up: “My Mum is the hub of our family, and one of the most funny, caring women I've ever known. She has an amazing zest for life and the will to do so much more. She inspires us all and we will make possible everything she wants to do - within reason. We’ve already had to veto a parachute jump and wingwalking!”

So, with these new experiences under her belt, is there anything else on Eileen’s bucket list?

“Well I’ve never ridden a motorbike” she muses. Time will tell whether the family think that’s ‘within reason’.

Ryde firefighters were called to the aid of an inquisitive terrier who got her head stuck in a gate last Sunday, August 18. Five month old Peggy who's family were visiting the Island to attend the Garlic Festival was staying at Westfield Park, Ryde when she got well and truly stuck as she poked her head through a decorative gate. The crew of Green Watch came to her rescue and got to work with precision cutting tools to set her free. They tweeted pictures of Peggy with her head stuck and another of her after the incident looking much happier reunited with her owner Liz, along with an image of the gate missing some of its decorative scrolling.

Fundraiser for Air Ambulance in memory of Yvonne Copland A fundraising event will be held on Saturday, September 14 in memory of Yvonne Copland, who tragically lost her life in a traffic accident on Forest Road in April. The event has been organised by her daughters Charlotte Copland and Michelle McMahon.

Writing on Facebook Charlotte explained that her mother was a lover 'of all thing gin' so the fundraiser will be held at the home of Isle of Wight Gin, The Mermaid Bar in Pondwell, the former Wishing Well pub. Tickets are £5 and only 150 tickets are available due to the size of the venue. All funds raised will be donated to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.

Charlotte said: "On the 14th of April, my mum was devastatingly killed as a result of a road traffic collision on Forest Road. She was travelling as a passenger, alongside my brother, brother in law and dad, all of whom were airlifted to mainland hospitals with life threatening injuries.

"At just 64 years of age, my mum's life was tragically cut short, so in honour of her memory I am organising a fundraiser to raise money for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight

Kiteboarder named The man who died at Compton Beach on August 7 following a kiteboarding accident has been named as Tom Hutchinson aged 52. Mr Hutchinson was born on the Island and retained a home here whilst running his London based yacht rigging business.

The Air Ambulance service costs £150,000 a day to provide.

Millie needs forever home after cruel ear-cropping A 2 year-old American bulldog-cross who underwent a hideous DIY home crop on the Isle of Wight – in which a dogs’ ears are cut, often using a pair of scissors – is looking for a new forever home where she will be safe, loved and never hurt again.

Millie was rescued in June after being abandoned and found wandering by the dog warden in a rural area and was taken in by the RSPCA centre in Godshill. She was suffering from mastitis – inflammation of the mammary gland due to an infection.

Manager Suzanne Pugh said: “We believe Millie had given birth before being abandoned and she was suffering from an extreme case of mastitis.

She was also extremely emaciated and had endured a hideous home ear crop. She needed immediate vet care to help with the pain and discomfort and to try to improve her weight.

“She initially adapted well to her new surroundings in the shelter and we quickly gained her trust. She also made a good recovery from the mastitis but we’ve not been able to spay her due to some ongoing medical issues for which she’s still receiving veterinary treatment.”

Ear cropping is an illegal, cruel and completely unnecessary process. But the RSPCA is receiving more reports of dogs having their ears removed, often with scissors or knives and is seeing more dogs with cropped ears arriving at its centres.

Millie loves meeting new people and enjoys all the fuss and attention that she receives.

Coastguard teams from Bembridge and Ventnor and Bembridge RNLI lifeboat were called out after reports of screaming heard offshore from Appley Beach just before midnight on Saturday, August 17. Police also attended the scene. Despite an intensive search nothing was found and all teams were stood down.

Clarification A picture about a car park without planning permission which accompanied a story last week in the IW Observer included Cheverton Copse Holiday Park. We are happy to clarify that the car park is not theirs and the Holiday Park is not related to the story.

Suzanne added: “Our kennel was quieter when Millie arrived which enabled us to support her emotional health and wellbeing. However, we recently took in 65 dogs and, as you can imagine, this means the sound, sights, smells and overall disturbance has dramatically increased. She’s found this really stressful and her emotional health is deteriorating and Millie really deserves this chance.”

The Isle of Wight Coastguard and Fire Service were called to make safe a number of landslips at the cliffs off Shanklin Esplanade on Wednesday, August 21.

The land movement was reported by a member of the public and the Isle of Wight Council have been informed.

James and Ed lift top prize at Cowes Week Bembridge Sailing Club pair James Wilson and his brother in law Ed Peel enjoyed huge success at this year’s Cowes Week Regatta which ended last Saturday.

James and Ed, sailing Redwing Quail, posted a perfect scoreline to win the class, White Group, and Cowes Week overall.

Peel said: “It was absolutely fantastic.

We have never won it before so we are all delighted. James helmed brilliantly earlier in the week, but with his work commitments, I had the pressure maintaining our lead.

“On the final day the race committee

made the great decision to keep the races short and get everyone back on shore before the foul weather turned up. Thankfully our win put us in a good position for the overall win. We were delighted we were able to achieve it with family and friends.”

It was the 14th year the family-owned boat has won its class at Cowes since it was built in 1989, and helped bring Cowes Week to a fitting end for the Island.

The previous evening, a torrential downpour did not dampen the spirits of hundreds of spectators who lined the Parade, and took to boats, to watch the

annual fireworks display.

Now plans are already being made for Cowes Week 2020, when it is hoped the event will once again have a main sponsor. Although supported by a number of national and local companies, Cowes Week needs extra financial backing to take it forward.

This is something Cowes Week Ltd’s marketing director Kate Johnson says she and her colleagues will be working on over the next few months. It is also anticipated that the successful SailGP event will be back at Cowes again next year to coincide with the regatta.

Pay your fines - or risk losing your car

The Isle of Wight Council have introduced new rules which could see vehicles towed away and impounded in a new crackdown against people who fail to pay parking fines. From last Monday, August 19, so called ‘persistent evaders’ now risk losing their vehicles under the council’s new Vehicle Removal Policy.

A ‘persistent evader’ is where the registered keeper of a vehicle has three or more unpaid penalty charge notices (PCNs). The policy is designed to reduce crime and vandalism and vehicles repeatedly parking in contravention of regulations.

Councillor Ian Ward, Cabinet member for infrastructure and transport, said some people regularly or deliberately broke parking and traffic rules and refused to pay penalty charge notices or debts incurred.

He said: “Some vehicles are not registered,

or are not correctly registered, on the DVLA database and the owner is confident they can avoid paying any penalty charges. The Department for Transport guidance advises local authorities to take the strongest possible action against such motorists. This new policy allows us to do that.”

As at September 2018, there were 76 vehicles on the Island with more than ten unpaid parking fines, issued between 2005 and 2018. Some have no registered keeper and continue to be issued with fines.

Under the new policy, such vehicles could be removed from the public highway within 45 minutes and kept in storage — and will only be released on payment of the appropriate fees. If the fees are not paid within 36 days, the vehicle will be disposed of.

Bembridge Lifeboat Station “Open Day” There was a good turnout of visitors to the Bembridge lifeboat station on Saturday, August 17 for the annual open day, with over 1,100 people visiting the lifeboat station during the day. They took the opportunity to inspect the inshore and all-weather lifeboats and enjoyed the entertainment put on for all ages, both on-shore and in the offshore boathouse.

As well as being a fun event, there was the important message of how to keep safe in, on or around the sea. Bembridge lifeboat’s coastal safety team and HM Coastguard gave out valuable advice to all, with around 200 people expressing a particular interest in safety issues.

The Visits and Education team also had a busy day, with many youngsters interested in the work of the lifeboats.

Visitors were given guided tours of the all-weather lifeboat by crew members who explained how the ‘high-tech’ craft is operated.

Just after midday, the offshore boathouse was packed with spectators to witness the launch of the “Tamar” class all-weather lifeboat “Alfred Albert Williams”. Together with the inshore lifeboat “Norman Harvey” the two vesels entertained the crowds with

a simulated rescue and display, close to the shoreline, demonstrating how the lifeboats can respond and operate in an emergency.

Over the course of the day, in excess of £3,000 to support the work of the lifeboats was raised from sales of RNLI goods, refreshments and donations.

Drug deaths more than double over a decade Local Democracy Reporter - David Anderson

The number of people dying from drug misuse on the Isle of Wight has more than doubled within the last decade, with the mortality rate now above the national average.

There were 38 deaths related to drug poisoning on the Island in 2016-18, including 29 relating to drug misuse according to a report published this week by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). A death is classed as drug misuse if it was due to drug abuse or dependence, or if it involved a controlled substance.

The number of drug misuse deaths has more than doubled on the Island since 2010-12, when there were 13 deaths, and increased slightly on the last reported figure of 28 for 2015-17.

The Isle of Wight’s mortality rate for drug misuse deaths is 67 per cent higher than the national average for 2016-18.

England’s age-standardised mortality rate is 4.5 deaths per 100,000, but the figure for the Isle of Wight is 7.5 per 100,000. An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson said: “The Isle of Wight Public Health team commissions substance misuse services to work with people of all ages to tackle drug use. This includes providing medical and behavioural support for people to sustain changes and reductions in drug use, and providing the facilities for safe use of drugs and detoxification. The team works closely with providers to make sure that services are flexible to the needs of the population, and that people can access support from across the Island.

“Local partners in the police, probation and across health and social care work closely with the Public Health team to ensure that there is a

coordinated response to drug misuse and that people can access support for their wider needs.

“Public Health also works with the inclusion team to regularly review the causes and lessons that can be learnt from drug-related deaths. A proactive approach is taken, feeding this back in to services to make sure that actions are taken to intervene early and prevent deaths where possible.

“This is part of a continued effort to improve drug and alcohol services on the Island, ensuring that people can access appropriate, coordinated support to sustain reductions in drug use.”

The ONS figures for the report are combined into three-year groups to ensure that the data is robust and accurate.

New benefit take-up slow on Isle of Wight The change over to Universal Credit (UC) is happening more slowly on the Isle of Wight than elsewhere, with only 21% of Island claimants on the new scheme compared to 27% in the south east and 28% across Great Britain.

Government figures for May 2019 show that 7,343 Island households are in receipt of work related benefits or tax credits, with 1,953 on UC. The benefit replaces six 'legacy' benefits: Housing Benefit for those of working age, Income Support, income

based Jobseeker's Allowance, income related Employment and Support Allowance and Child and Working Tax Credits. It was designed to simplify the benefits system and incentivise paid work with a single monthly payment made to claimants. However it has proved controversial since it was first introduced in 2013 with reports of IT failures, massive overspends and administrative difficulties.

The Newport Job Centre introduced UC in June 2018 and it was extended

to cover the Ryde Job Centre four months later in October 2018. New claimants are only entitled to claim UC. Households already claiming continue to receive legacy benefits unless there is a significant change in their circumstances or the Department for Work and Pensions move them across to the new system, a process called 'managed migration' which is expected to take place between November 2020 and December 2023.

Official opening celebrated successful restoration of Northwood House Rotunda On Monday, August 12 the Rotunda at Northwood House was officially re-opened by Lora Peacey-Wilcox, Mayor of Cowes during the worldfamous Cowes Week Regatta.

The project to restore and protect this iconic Georgian building built in 1838 was made possible by a grant from the Coastal Revival Fund.

Roseleen Cullen, Chair of Northwood House Charitable Trust Co Ltd and the Directors welcomed the Mayor to the recently redecorated Rotunda– an entrance that has welcomed prime ministers, dignitaries, royalty and the Isle of Wight community for nearly two centuries.

The Reverend Andrew Poppe gave a brief blessing, celebrating the completion of the restoration and welcoming visitors for generations to come.

Significant improvement in Island’s GCSE results Provisional figures reported

by Island secondary schools indicate that GCSE students on the Isle of Wight have attained higher grades than in previous years according to the Isle of Wight Council.

The early indications are that the proportion of students attaining a grade 4 or above in English and maths this year has improved from 55 per cent in 2018, to 60 per cent.

The ‘attainment 8’ outcome which measures the results across the wider curriculum is also significantly better.

Councillor Paul Brading, Cabinet member for children’s services, education and skills, said: “Huge congratulations to all the students and staff for all their hard work and dedication.

“I’m really pleased with the large improvement in both English and maths, but also in the advances made across the broader curriculum.

Teamed with the provisional A-level results from last week, this is great news for the Island and shows that we are moving in a very

positive direction; education is improving and our young people have the skills to succeed in whatever they choose to do next.

“We will now wait for all the results to be verified later in the autumn term.”

Island roads becoming safer Recently released figures from the Department for Transport on casualties from road traffic accidents has revealed that in 2017 the overall number of deaths and injuries on Island roads fell below 400 for the first time since 2010.

The 2017 total of 397 casualties from 311 reported incidents included 3 fatalities, a motorcyclist and two car occupants, 79 injuries were described as serious with the remaining 315 people receiving slight harm as a result of an accident. Forty nine pedestrians were injured, 10 of them seriously.

The casualty figures are significantly reduced from previous years. The next lowest figure in the sample were from 2013, when there were 421 casualties from 331 accidents.

The highest number of injuries was in 2012 with 575 from 401 incidents.

If you don’t give your details at the time, any accident causing damage or injury should be reported to the police within 24 hours.

It should also be reported to your insurance company, even if you’re not planning to make a claim.

An Island success story

An Island restaurant’s success has been featured in The Caterer, the weekly magazine for the hospitality industry. The Hut in Colwell Bay, which reportedly has an annual turnover of £2m and has seen year on year growth of 75%, is described as one of Britain’s most successful seaside restaurants despite being open for only seven months of the year.

Owned since 2011 by brothers Matt and George Adams, The Hut has become something of a celebrity haunt, with a recent weekend seeing Kate Winslett

and Jude Law dining at separate tables.

It’s also a firm favourite with Chris Evans, who last year broadcast his former BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show from the venue.

The three ribs owned by The Hut, which are used as tenders to ferry diners to and from the luxury yachts and motorboats moored in Colwell Bay, are described as ‘almost an afterthought’, despite now being a mainstay of the business.

Truck, a 1975 Land Rover emblazoned with the restaurant’s simple blue logo.

The Hut now employs 75 staff, some of them year round, and George describes them as ‘fantastic’, pointing out that they train up local people because it is hard to recruit experienced staff on the Island.

The Adams brothers have no plans to rest on their laurels. They are looking forward to setting up a training academy with a fully functioning bar and opening up four more Huts in the South, starting with the East Wight.

‘Inspirational’ partnership of four Island charities nominated for national award A collaboration of four Island charities has been shortlisted for the Third Sector Award for Charity Partnership of the Year 2019. The Living Well Approach which is funded by the Isle of Wight Council, was launched at the end of 2017 and includes teams from Age UK Isle of Wight, Carers IW, People Matter IW and The Way Forward Programme. Together, they provide a single point of contact to support Islanders aged 18 and over who are beginning to encounter difficulties.

Help is focused on those who are not eligible for adult social care. They have so far supported 3938 people across the Island.

Representatives of the service, which was described as ‘Inspirational’ at the Better Care Fund National Conference in Birmingham, have been invited to attend the awards ceremony in London on September 19, where the winner of the Charity Partnership of the Year award will be announced.

The Living Well Approach is pitched against four other charity partnerships from across the UK for the award, which recognises the achievements of charities of all sizes to celebrate their work and the real difference they make to society.

The Living Well Project Manager from Age UK Isle of Wight, Charlotte Price, said: “We are so proud of the preventive work achieved through the Living Well partnership, and are delighted to have been short listed for a Third Sector Award. This charity partnership has challenged the boundaries of what is possible when organisations work together, and we are pleased to be able to deliver quality services to Islanders who need our support”.

Anonymous donation for policeman Isle of Wight Police have thanked an anonymous Islander for a generous donation towards the fund raising money in memory of PC Andrew Harper. The policeman lost his life after being dragged along by a vehicle as he attended a reported burglary in Sulhamstead, Berkshire.

A picture of the £100 cash donation dropped off at Ryde police station was shared on social media along with the hand-written envelope saying; “Please put this towards the funds for the officer killed on duty. Thank you for everything you all do for us. I am very grateful to every one of you.”

An official JustGiving fundraiser for the murdered police constable, who had been married for just 4 weeks, raised over £100,000 within 24 hours of being launched.

Ten males between the ages of 13 and 30 have been held in connection with PC Harper's death.

Wightlink showcases Island produce in the new Castle Café The best of locally produced food and drink is now available at Wightlink’s Yarmouth terminal at the ferry company’s Castle Café.

The range includes Island Roasted coffee, sandwiches and pastries from Grace’s Bakery, cakes from Calbourne Classics and Wight Crystal water.

“Customers on the way to the mainland can now pick up a quick drink and snack before boarding their sailing”, says Wightlink’s Head of Retail Simon Lewis.

All the milk used in the café comes from Briddlesford Farm’s award-winning herd of Guernsey cows, based near Wootton.

Farmer Paul Griffin was among one of the first people to visit Castle Café: “Wightlink’s

Wight Taste initiative is a really good way of supporting local businesses and highlighting the fine produce that is abundant on the Island. We are delighted to be part of this new outlet that provides another high-profile shop window for our milk,” he says.

Wightlink’s Business Development Director Clive Tilley adds: “We are responding to customer feedback by offering excellent local coffee and a range of snacks. Our ports at Lymington, Fishbourne, Ryde, Gunwharf and Portsmouth Harbour already have cafés which are proving very popular with our customers.”

Opening times are currently being trialled to determine what works best for customers.

Steam Railway to construct an all-weather tourist facility The Isle of Wight Steam Railway (IWSR) has been awarded a grant of £116,000 from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. This will enable the Railway to construct a 360 square metre barn in the Havenstreet station show field, the venue of a range of events including the Island Steam Show, 1940s Experience, Island Real Ale Festival and Island Motor Show.

The total cost of the project will be close to £300,000 and will provide a substantial all weather space for events and a variety of functions. Isle of Wight Steam Railway Chairman Peter Conway said, “We’ve been staging events at Havenstreet for some 45 years and a constant challenge is the weather.

Our solution has been to use marquees. This has served us well but to expand our tourist season and visitor experience a permanent structure has been our wish for many years.

This grant means we can go ahead.” Work is due to commence in September and will be completed by May 2020. The barn will therefore be available for many events next year.

The Railway’s Commercial Manager, Richard Hale commented, “This new barn

will enhance our many long-established events and will allow us to be creative in introducing new ones, in particular out of season. These may include a Winter Real Ale Festival and a range of exhibitions that have previously not been possible.”

The Railway anticipates the new facility will create additional volunteer opportunities and a number of paid jobs. Extending the tourist season is an ongoing focus of Visit Isle of Wight and this development will assist that aim.

Body found in sea during search for missing woman The search for a missing 69 year old Ventnor woman ended with the tragic discovery of a body in the sea. A plea was put out to find Jennifer Key at lunchtime on Sunday, August 18 after she went missing the previous evening, but within a few hours it was announced that a body had been found in the

water at Ventnor.

Hampshire Constabulary confirmed the discovery, saying that although formal identification had not yet been made, Jennifer’s family had been informed. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

Saturday, August 31, is exactly 50 years to the day since the second Isle of Wight Festival of Music welcomed Bob Dylan to the stage to close a memorable event. Before him, The Band, The Who, The Moody Blues, Free, Joe Cocker, Julie Felix et al helped draw 150,000-plus fans to Woodside Bay, Wootton...the biggest festival ever in the UK at that time.

To honour that historic event, Million Dollar Bash is celebrating the golden anniversary with a great one-day festival at the County Showground, in Northwood, with a raft of artists and bands who will recreate the magic of those times.

Ashley Hutchings MBE, the acclaimed founder member of Fairport Convention, is the Bash’s event director. He will also lead Dylancentric, an allstar folk-rock band, who will present a flavour of the great man’s IoW 69 set.

Folk-rock legend Richard Thompson, who was Dylan’s wingman on lead guitar at the Seville Guitar Legends event, is the Bash’s special guest.

For rockers, Wishbone Ash, celebrating their own 50th anniversary this year, will appear in their only UK festival appearance of 2019; the highly influential Free’s 1969 festival appearance will be represented

by Kossoff: The Band Plays On, featuring vocalist Terry Slesser, founder-member of legendary Free guitarist Paul Kossoff’s final band.

From the IoW 1969 bill comes the wonderful Julie Felix, who played at Glastonbury a few weeks back, and fellow ’69 veterans, Jacqui McShee’s Pentangle, and the Pretty Things’ Dick Taylor and Phil May. These acts will give a truly authentic 1969 flavour to the Bash!

Newport’s festival of lights Newport Illuminated Carnival took place on Thursday night, August 22. Hundreds of people lined the streets to watch the colourful, lighted parade and enjoy the music as the procession went past.

From bees to dinosaurs the imaginative costumes delighted the onlookers and the children and young at heart adults on the floats clearly had a wonderful time. The judging was difficult due to the quality of the entries, but a delightful duo of a poppy and soldier were eventually awarded first in their class.

Island carnivals are a tradition enjoyed by locals and tourists alike and this one certainly brought some laughter and colour to Newport’s streets.

Wolverton Manor Garden Fair 2019 Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, Wolverton Manor Garden Fair will take place on August 31 and September 1.

Organisers are already gearing up for what is set to be a memorable weekend.

military vehicles, vintage fairground amusements, magic shows, live music and lots more.

Last year £22,000 was raised for Age UK Isle of Wight) and £800 each for five Island charities: The Foodbank, Cowes Sea Scouts, Wight Brady Bunch, Care in the Garden and The Salvation Army.

Visitors over the weekend exceeded 6,000.

Garlic Festival 2019 The third weekend in August always brings the Isle of Wight Garlic Festival to the Newchurch show ground and August 17 & 18 was another fun-filled year for the Island’s biggest Summer show. Luck was on the side of the organisers as they dodged the worst of the inclement weather that’s hit so many Island events recently. A gusty wind on Saturday may have brought on a few worries for traders watching out for their tents and displays but it certainly didn’t affect the mood of the visitors. Islanders and tourists alike happily came along to try out all things garlicky and enjoy the displays and entertainment. Sunday’s weather was just right, not too hot, the rain held off and the field was full of good humour and smiles.

A firm favourite appearing for the second year was Tom Hogg with his hilarious Hogg Show. Porcine characters including Wool I Ham, Pigzy Lott and Del Boy aka Harry Trotter couldn’t fail to melt the hardest of hearts. Tom loves the Garlic Festival and it shows.

Haven Falconry, Wight Wizards Dog Display Team and West Wight Alpacas and Llamas were the popular local attractions in the main arena. Thedaring antics of the Vander Superheroes Spacewheel Show wowed the audience.

David Randini entertained the youngsters with his magic and Punch and Judy shows. The Greatest Showman Singalong Party may have been aimed at a younger audience but there were lots of oldies joining in.

On stage there was music to suit all

tastes, Motown with Roy Hemmings, Rod Stewart tribute act Jim Cregan & Co gave great performances and local bands including Ska’d for Life and the Baggywrinkles had everybody up and dancing.

And then of course there was the food. Garlic everywhere, the piquant bulb was used to flavour everything – burgers, sweetcorn, mushrooms, fudge, beer and pretty much anything else you could think of. The Theatre Kitchen was packed out with people learning what to do with all the garlic they had purchased to take home.

All aboard for classic buses, beer and walks 2019 – this is how it all works...

Seasoned Bus, Beer and Walk enthusiasts (and there are lots of them) know how the weekend works, but if you’re thinking of taking part for the first time here’s the low down on what goes on and how to enjoy the fun.

Over the weekend of October 12 and 13 a unique network of 19 bus routes will operate across the Island – and you can ride on them completely free of charge!

All routes start and finish at either Newport Quay or the IW Bus and Coach Museum in Park Road, Ryde, with a frequent shuttle service operating between the two. The buses are all lovingly restored, classic, public service vehicles and the bus stops are all pubs or other venues serving beer.

Although travel on the buses is free, the organisation of the event is funded by the sale of programmes. They are your indispensable handbook for the weekend with essential information, details of the routes and timetables and, most importantly, great offers from venues and supporting organisations that will very quickly save you more than the £7 cost of the programme. Offers include discounts on beer and food, free travel on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, free gin tastings and lots, lots more.

Bigger and better than ever – great for the island’s economy!

This year’s Isle of Wight Classic Buses, Beer and Walks Weekend is set to be bigger and better than ever, with more buses, more routes and (for the first time by popular demand), East Cowes will be included on the network. It’s a great weekend for Islanders and visitors alike. Leave your car at home, travelling on a vintage bus is a wonderful way to see the Island, visit places that you never normally go to and enjoy a pint or two of the best of the Island’s best beers.

Last year’s event saw an estimated 17,000 people take part.

Forty-three per cent of them visitors to the Island, so as well as extending the main tourist season the event is estimated to bring half a million pounds into the local economy. Not bad for an event that’s only in its sixth year.

This year the IW Observer has been selected as the official media partner for the increasingly popular event, so we are delighted to be partnering up with the IW Bus and Coach Museum and CAMRA to help deliver a weekend to remember.

Fabulous fireworks to finish Cowes Week

Vicki is a Woman of the Year 2019!

The Friday Cowes Week fireworks are always a highlight for Islanders, although this year's dreadful weather meant that turnout was lower than usual, and the scheduled RAF Typhoon display had to be cancelled. But if the weather put you off this year you missed a real treat. Our photographs are great, but you really had to be there to get the full effect.

This year the fireworks were sponsored to the tune of £45,000 by Red Funnel to celebrate their 50th anniversary high speed Solent crossings, and they had a red and white theme at the beginning and the end. The ‘Oohs and Aaahs’ of those that did brave the

weather showed appreciation of the gesture.

Fran Collins, Chief Executive of Red Funnel said: “Cowes Week is such a big event and draw for the Island, especially this year with Sail GP coming over, so we took the opportunity to make sure it was well supported, and with it being the 50th anniversary for the jets, it fitted together really nicely. It was a lot of money, but we felt if we didn’t do it then it might have lost the impact. We had a fantastic Sail GP, notwithstanding that Saturday was cancelled, and the feedback that we have had has been really good.”

A super slimmer has been named Ryde’s Slimming World ‘Woman of the Year’ 2019 thanks to her incredible 3st 8½lbs weight loss.

Slimming World’s Woman of the Year competition celebrates the achievements of thousands of women up and down the country who have made long-term healthy lifestyle changes.

Vicki says: “When I first joined the group I never dreamt that I would be in the position I am now. Losing weight has made such a big difference to my life. Sandown in Bloom again The Sandown in Bloom competition was reintroduced this year by Sandown Community Association after a lapse of a couple of years, with the awards ceremony being held at The Tap on Thursday, August 15. The judges had a difficult task selecting the winners due to the high quality of entries.

Albert Buckingham of Avenue Road won the best small front garden trophy, with the best large front garden award ending in a dead heat between Ann White of Fitzroy Street and Delia Bridger of Beachfield Road.

The Briars won the Ladies Realm trophy for best retirement complex but youngsters were not left out as The Community Kids won the best youth initiative trophy. There was another dead heat for the best business frontage between Glory Art Glass and the Fort Caravan Park. Another trophy sponsored

by Glory Art Glass for the best hotel/guest house was won by The Montpelier.

The judges thanked everybody involved in the competition and confirmed they are planning an even bigger and better event next year.

Deadline for SWR's £5.3m fund is fast approaching Organisations are being encouraged to apply for projects to be funded

by South Western Railway's (SWR) £5.3m Customer and Communities Improvement Fund (CCIF) as the deadline for applications closes on Friday, September 6, 2019.

SWR is looking for projects based on its railway network to make a positive difference to people’s lives. No matter how big or small, successful bids can include a wide range of schemes and activities, from outreach projects helping to open rail travel to diverse communities, educational campaigns, cycle schemes, through to full-scale building and refurbishment projects.

CCIF runs every two years until 2024.

SWR is making £5.3m available for projects in this current period, which includes £100,000 designated for the Isle of Wight, and is keen to hear ideas from local authorities, rail user groups, charities, and other similar organisations.

Fire crews praised for actions at derelict school site blaze Island firefighters have been praised for their professionalism and swift action in dealing with a blaze at the derelict lower site at Christ the King College, Carisbrooke on Monday, August 19 and in the early hours of Tuesday.

Crews from all Island fire stations attended the incident which began at around 11pm. Cover was also called over from Hampshire under the normal mutual aid arrangements.

The fire was in the roof space of a single storey building due for demolition. The cause is currently being investigated.

Neither the main school site nor neighbouring properties were affected and no one was hurt.

The Isle of Wight Council’s Cabinet member for public protection, Councillor Tig Outlaw, said: “I would like to thank our fire and rescue service for their professionalism and swift action in dealing with this incident at this derelict site.

“The site, which was under the responsibility of contractors, will remain closed off.”

It is believed the incident will not affect the running of the school when it reopens next term and it has been confirmed that no further investigations will be taking place into how the fire started.

Investment for Bump Express and CNC Coatings

John Nightingale Bump Express, an Island car repair centre who also specialise in alloy wheel repair and powder coating has made significant investment in their workshop, with help from the Isle of Wight Lottery. The investment of over £35,000 in total includes the installation of a new state-of-the-art oven, an overhead rail system and a water wash spray booth. The new equipment was custom built for the company and is configured for powder coating and curing of alloy wheels. It enables the company more flexibility to include architectural, manufactured components and marine parts such as railings, marine portholes and more.

The latest investment follows on-going investment by John Nightingale who started the company in 2010 and adds to their already impressive array of specialist equipment. They have the Island's only CNC Diamond Cut Lathe to repair Diamond Cut Alloy Wheels and a Wheel Straightening Machine which enables 99% of all repairs to be done “in-house”.

John said: “The demand for our services has doubled over recent years and this latest equipment will transform the business, enabling us to significantly reduce process times for our powder coating service and to access other markets such as marine, architectural and manufacturing.”

With an estimated 72,500 cars on the Island, it’s not surprising that Bump Express have been busy since opening their professional car care studio opposite Morrisons in Lake.

Appley Tower celebrated at Monkton Arts Centre Monkton Arts in East Street, Ryde is celebrating the image of the iconic Appley Tower for two weeks starting on Bank Holiday Monday, August 26, with old and new photographs, paintings and drawings by local artists on display.

Appley Tower, built in 1875

by William Hutt is one of the most photographed and painted buildings on the Island. The exhibition seeks to raise interest in the future of the tower which is owned by the IW Council.

There had been speculation that it would pass into private ownership, but in 2017 Ryde East councillor, Michael Lilley started a campaign for the tower to remain in community ownership. Natural Enterprise, a non-profit organisation who support and encourage investment on the Island obtained funding for a study on the future of the tower from the Coastal Communities Fund.

That work is nearing completion

and when published will set out options for the long-term future of the much loved tower.

Councillor Lilley said: “I am so pleased that the new Monkton Arts venue has decided to put on this exhibition as Appley Tower is such a big part of Ryde and the Isle of Wight’s Heritage. It is the symbol of one of the best beaches and parks on the Island. When I heard some years ago it was closed and could be sold, I just had to start campaigning for it to be kept in community ownership. Natural Enterprise have been fantastic and IW Council have been very supportive in giving time and support to find a sustainable future for the tower."

Visitors to the exhibition which is open to the public from 9am to 5pm (closed Sunday, September 1), will be able to learn more about the tower and sign up as a supporter of the campaign to keep the tower in public ownership.

Sandown busking happening again!

Sandown Community Association have organised their second annual Busking Competition on Thursday, August 29, with music and song in the High Street and along the Esplanade.

The competition will run from 6pm to 8.30pm with

an award presentation at approximately 9pm at the Tap. A number of shops will be open late so why not pop along to enjoy the fun, or you can even take part if you can hold a tune and you think you've got what it takes!

LibDem MEP to visit Island

A Liberal Democrat MEP will be visiting the Isle of Wight later this month for a science and innovation discussion.

Judith Bunting MEP will attend an event, which will include a talk and an opportunity to ask questions at the Quay Arts Centre, Newport, at 7.30pm on Monday, August 26.

Academics and industry leaders have been invited to the event, and Islanders are welcome to attend.

‘Challenge & Adventure’ to close Island charity Challenge and Adventure is to close after providing support to young people on the Island for more than 27 years. The charity's activities were centred around the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and aimed at young people often outside the school system or facing other difficulties.

Funding for the charity was provided in the past by a number of organisations including the IW Council and the Police and Crime Commissioners, as well as local fundraising. However, cuts in central and local government funding over recent years led to a partnership with HTP Apprenticeship College which enabled the charity to continue their work.

A statement from the charity issued on Wednesday, August 20 said that amendments last September to central grant funding led to changes in how courses must be delivered After considering all options the Trustees had decided that the time is right to close and thanked Rachael Randall and the HTP team for their support. It was confirmed that a similar Challenge Group for young learners will continue under the direction of HTP based at their premises.

Gill Kennett, Chair of Trustees at Challenge and Adventure said, “The Trustees are pleased that the activities of Challenge & Adventure can be carried on; and thank both the teams at HTP, and Wight Aid for their support - as well as the staff and volunteers

who have played a part in the development of Challenge & Adventure over the years”.

Well known Island fundraiser Karen Eeles (pictured), who has been the face of Challenge and Adventure since 2013 has moved to WightAid where she will continue her work for Island charities.

Freshwater Lifeboat fun and prizes at Open Day Freshwater Independent Lifeboat’s Open Day takes place on Sunday (Aug 25) starting at 10.30am. It will be the last one of the season, so they are pulling out all the stops, with fun and games for all the family, not to mention some delicious cakes made by our fundraisers. With good weather expected, it provides the opportunity to meet the Lifeboat crew, and see them go through some exercises in Freshwater Bay. They will also

be launching their Grand Draw, with some amazing prizes including a £250 Brittany Ferries voucher; an IW Ganesh jumper; a family kayaking session from Adventure Activities; a magnum of champagne; a family ticket to Monkey Haven, and lots more.

Island Garlic pleases palates across Europe The global garlic market is growing and is expected to reach £16.5m by the end of 2023 and the Isle of Wight Garlic Farm is tapping into this global demand with its unique range of over 60 garlic food and drinks.

According to figures issued by the Department for International Trade (DIT) the company has secured sales of over £20,000 to Germany, Sweden and Denmark over the past year, with the figures set to grow by 25% over the next two years.

Barnes Edwards, Managing Director at the Garlic Farm, said: “Demand and our local reputation has driven our exports as we have been approached by customers directly resulting in a steady growth in our export markets. It is great to be able to represent the UK abroad. We are very proud of what we do, and it is great to get this validated by being selected by international buyers. If we can find success overseas so can other UK food producers.”

Christina Gotzl, Founder of North Parade in Sweden said: “I have been importing from the Garlic Farm since 2014 because of the highquality ingredients and innovative flavour combinations. I would say to producers that are considering exporting – don’t be afraid.

I mean most of us importers have our own deals regarding transport and logistics so basically there’s no difference in selling to Sweden as it would be selling to Manchester.

Also, working with DIT has been invaluable as they are supportive and always have time for us, so I presume they’ve got time for exporters as well!”

Free refills at Hovertravel

Armed police called over to Whippingham Armed police and paramedics were called to a Whippingham property at Medina Park on the afternoon of Saturday, August 17 to assist an elderly woman who had collapsed inside. Isle of Wight Police tweeted that they were called to the property, together with officers from

the Hampshire and Thames Valley Police armed response unit, following a 'concern for welfare' report. They gained entry to the property and handed the lady over to the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service paramedics for further care.

Following on from their involvement in the hugely successful National Refill Day on June 20, Hovertravel has been promoting their Refill Station status to their customers.

Loretta Lale, Head of Commercial at Hovertravel, adds: “We started reducing our single-use plastic consumption by giving all our staff re-usable water bottles on National Refill Day and since then our teams have been explaining our commitment to offer free tap water refills to all customers who bring a reusable bottle. To encourage customers to ask for refills, we are displaying the round, blue “Refill” sticker on our terminal windows.”

Hovertravel has also signed up to the interactive Refill app, which has digital

mapping to tell users where their nearest Refill point is. Both Hovertravel terminals, in Ryde and Southsea, are Refill points.

Loretta continues: “We have always been aware of the importance of staying hydrated when travelling and have ensured that we promote drinking water to our staff and customers throughout the year. As a ferry service we also recognise that transport hubs are ideal locations for a refill station, and that we could make a real difference to the problem of plastic pollution.”

Hovertravel joins other major transport brands such as Network Rail, Heathrow Airport and Transport for London in offering free refills.

Police raid on family home in Newport A 42 year old Newport man was arrested on suspicion of being involved in the supply of Class B drugs following a raid on a family home on Bluebell Meadows, Newport on Monday, August 19.

A number of police officers, some clad in riot gear, descended without prior warning on an address at Lavender Way shortly after 8am.

Blue Light Breakout in aid of Brainy Bunch!

Teams from the three Isle of Wight Emergency Services will ‘escape’ the Island and go ‘on the run’ for a 50hour period, as they travel as far away as possible, with zero planning, and compete in a ‘Blue Light Breakout’, raising money in aid of Island charity ‘The Wight Brainy Bunch’.

The teams will consist of two offduty personnel from Police, Ambulance and Fire, who have given their time freely to take part in the challenge to support IOW Firefighter Mark Grimes, who founded the charity following his diagnosis of a brain tumour in 2015.

The event is supported by Novum Law, Maher Ross and DDC Electronics, along with many other local businesses, who have supported the breakout, to ensure the teams can be repatriated

to the Island following their two-day challenge.

The Wight Brainy Bunch provide emotional support and financial assistance to Isle of Wight families affected by brain tumours, by funding a variety of services, including travel costs to Southampton for treatment, purchasing of specialist equipment, short breaks and memory making experiences for those with a terminal diagnosis, counselling services, physiotherapy to aid mobility and cognitive rehabilitation therapy.

In addition to this, they hold monthly support groups to offer patients, family members and carers the opportunity to access information regarding their diagnosis or treatment and help them as they navigate their way on what can

be a difficult and isolating journey, as well as a Bereavement Support Group for those who have sadly lost a loved one to a brain tumour.

The event is also being supported by IW Radio, and teams will be tracked throughout the event, with the public encouraged to support and vote for their chosen team. The winning team will be the pair who travel the furthest in the given time. Southern Water’s infrastructure has been branded inadequate by regulators, as Isle of Wight surfers complain beaches ‘reek of sewage’ and leave them ‘nauseous and dizzy.’

According to the Environment Agency in the past 30 days there have been 15 instances of increased risk of water pollution due to heavy rain on the Island — in Shanklin, St Helen’s, Seagrove, Ryde, Cowes and Gurnard.

Heavy rain can lead to wastewater entering the sea, as more water arrives in sewers than can be processed. Excess water is stored in large tanks, but when these fill up wastewater is filtered and released. The wastewater is often from washing machines, showers and dishwashers, diluted by rain and runoff water from roads and land.

Matt Harwood, the Isle of Wight regional rep for Surfers Against Sewage, said Southern Water must do more. He said: “As soon as we get heavy rainfall, water is discharged. A lot of it gets treated but what they haven’t got at the moment is the facilities to deal with the amount of water.

“We have got an increase in population and more surface run-off. They are not putting the infrastructure in place to deal with the increase in water run off.”

In a report published in June, Ofwat, the water services regulation authority, said Southern Water’s standards fell below those of other sewerage companies.

It said storm tanks were too small, equipment was not properly maintained and there was a lack of capital investment.

Southern Water said it has invested millions in its wastewater network in recent years, including a £4 million project in Shanklin which includes installing a new storm tank.

Ofwat will soon release its final decision on what action will be taken against Southern Water for ‘significant breaches of its licence conditions and its statutory duties.’

A criminal investigation by the Environment Agency into the environmental aspect of Southern Water’s alleged breaches, which was launched in March, 2016, remains ongoing.

The Isle of Wight Council said bathing waters on the Island had ‘never been cleaner’ and has launched a new campaign to keep them that way, working with Southern Water and the Environment Agency.

New pop up bike Yacht in trouble service for Shanklin helped out again A new ‘pop-up’ bike hire service has launched from an Island business, thanks to funding from the IW Council.

Routefifty7, Shanklin, secured funding from the Isle of Wight Council’s Active Travel Innovation Grant last autumn to create a new ‘pop-up’ bike hire hub based at the Shanklin Esplanade.

The service aims to tap into a growing market of new and novice cyclists.

Cabinet member for infrastructure and transport, Councillor Ian Ward, said: “I would like to congratulate Routefifty7 on securing funding for this exciting project. It is brilliant to see the popup bike hire hub in action. Shanklin Esplanade is a great location to ride for those who are lapsed or new to cycling, not to mention the great views. I’m sure visitors will be encouraged to add active travel to their visit and encourage

others to drive less and see more of our beautiful Island.”

The Island firm already runs a bike hire business from Lower Hyde and this project will help promote short, easy, flat rides along the revetment to Sandown Pier and back, using part of the Red Squirrel Trail. It will also link up with local businesses along the route, providing discounts and offers to customers.

Kevan Ansell, Routefifty7 company director, said: “There is a fantastic opportunity to use the safe environment of the revetment from Shanklin to Sandown and beyond to encourage new cyclists. Being awarded this grant we are now able to open the Isle of Wight’s first Pop-Up Bike Hire on Shanklin Esplanade encouraging new riders to ‘Bike the Bay’. We believe our pop-up

will also reinvigorate a neglected part of Shanklin, raise the profile of the bay area and impact revenue coming into the area.”

Councillor Wayne Whittle said: “The council has been helping Routefifty7 expand their cycle hire offer on Shanklin seafront. I’m delighted to see the success of this exciting new local business and we will continue to support their fantastic effort to keep the Bay on the Island’s cycling map.”

The company successfully bid for funding following the launch of the Sustainable Transport Innovation Grant Fund in July 2018, when the council put out the call for organisations to submit applications for funding to deliver their own innovative sustainable transport projects.

A tangled spinnaker turned out to be the least of the problems for the five people crewing a Cowes Week yacht on Thursday, August 15, resulting in several craft, including Cowes RNLI lifeboat, rushing to its aid.

The spinnaker-tangling occurred aboard a quartertonner in brisk winds, in the area of Ryde Middle bank.

It appeared the yacht had tipped flat onto the sea when a crew member climbed the mast to try to free the recalcitrant sail, resulting in

him crashing into the water.

Cowes lifeboat was called out by Coastguards to assist the independent Gosport lifeboat, already on the scene.

With one crew member needing medical attention, the now re-righted craft was eventually towed to Shepards Marina, Cowes, by a Cowes Week committee boat where the yacht was met by Isle of Wight coastguards and ambulance personnel.

The same yacht also needed help in last year’s Cowes Week, when it lost its rudder.

Cyclist appeal

A cyclist riding towards Binstead was knocked off his bike last Thursday, August 8 on Binstead Road. The police tweeted for information saying that they did not have a description of the car which failed to stop. Red Jet delve into archives to celebrate 50 years of travel

This year Red Funnel is celebrating 50 years of continuous high-speed service between Southampton and West Cowes.

To celebrate the anniversary the company has delved into its extensive archives to explore how its high-speed ferries have changed over the decades. The initial hydrofoil Shearwater ferries entered service in May, 1969, and five further vessels followed. Shearwater 6 were withdrawn from service in 1998, Shearwater 5 was finally retired in 2000.

The first Red Jet catamaran entered service in April, 1991. She was the first waterjet propelled high speed vessel on the Solent and could carry 120 passengers. She was also the first of Red Funnel’s fleet to receive an official naming ceremony.

Red Jet 6 entered service in 2016, built

by Shemara Refit LLP in East Cowes. She

marked the return of fast ferry building in the UK. Red Funnel 7, her sister ship is the latest addition to Red Funnel's high-speed fleet and was named by the HRH The Duchess of Cornwall in July 2018.

Today, Red Funnel has three high-speed ferries in its fleet – Red Jets 4, 6 and 7. Each with a top speed of 38 knots. They transport thousands of passengers each year between Southampton and West Cowes.

Fran Collins, CEO of Red Funnel, said: “This year marks our 50th anniversary of highspeed service between Southampton and West Cowes. It is fantastic to look back and see the progression both the company and ferry industry as a whole, have made during this time, with all efforts focused on giving our customers the best travel experience possible."

MP seeks compensation for family after on-line mix up Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely has written to the Rt Hon Nicky Morgan MP, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, following a request for help from Susie Breare whose disabled son Michael lost over £3,000 playing a game on-line that he thought was free.

Though Michael believed the game was free to play and that card details were necessary only once extra features were accessed, he began to unwittingly run up a bill.

Realising what had happened, Mrs Beare asked Mr Seely for help. He wrote to Mrs Morgan asking what steps were being taken by the Government to rectify the issues faced

by Michael and others in similar situations.

He also asked to what extent these issues have affected people across the country and, if this is a national problem, what steps the Government can take to help. He has also written to the Chief Executive of the company

responsible for the game ‘Hidden Artifacts’ to try to obtain a refund for Michael.

Mr Seely said: “It is important that action is taken not only to obtain compensation for this Isle of Wight family but also to try to prevent this sort of thing from happening again.

“Compensation for Michael is the first step, but his case appears to have raised wider issues that need to be addressed, urgently.”

Last month the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport answered a question on the issue from Preet Kaur Gill MP for Edgbaston, saying: “Products, such as loot boxes, and other microtransactions in online games have to comply with consumer legislation which protects consumers of all ages from misleading and/or aggressive marketing. Consumers requiring advice should contact the Citizens Advice consumer service on 03454 040506.”

A number of Chihuhuas currently in the care of the RSPCA at Godshill are ready to be rehomed. As previously reported 65 of the tiny dogs were seized from their former owner on July 29 amid concerns for the animals' welfare.

The RSPCA have announced that the dogs will not be rehomed on a first come, first served basis; instead a Perfect Match form must be completed and the charity will then match individual dogs to their new forever home following checks including a home visit. All dogs will be microchipped, spayed or neutered and fully vaccinated as

well as having up-to-date flea and worming treatment, the cost of which is included in a one off adoption fee. The RSPCA is expecting to be 'overwhelmed' with offers to adopt the animals, and has apologised in advance to anybody who is disappointed not to be offered one of the dogs, and stressing that they value the support of everybody who volunteers to provide a home to one of their animals.

The remaining dogs are continuing to receive medical care and veterinary support and will become available for adoption over the coming weeks.

Chihuahuas ready for forever home Unpaid carer contract Local Democracy Reporter - David Anderson The Isle of Wight Council is re-commissioning its support for unpaid carers, as funding for Carers IW is due to expire next year.

Carers IW has been funded by the council to provide support for adult carers since 2014, with additional lottery funding through the Age Friendly Island programme.

However, both lots of funding are due to end next spring, with the council ‘looking at future service delivery.’

Carers IW, which is based at the Riverside Centre in Newport, said it hopes to submit a tender for the new contract.

If it is not chosen to continue providing the service, the charity said some staff could be transferred to work for the new provider.

A council spokesperson said: “The existing carers support service has been grant funded for the past five years. The grant funding agreement which governs service delivery is due to end on May 31, 2020, and as a result it is necessary for the council to look at future service delivery.

“We will be using the current consultation to identify what carers on the Isle of Wight

want from their support services and using this to shape future provision.

“This is a valued service and we want to ensure that it continues but need also to ensure that it meets the need of the people it is commissioned to support.

“The contract opportunity for the future service will be advertised and organisations who can deliver the new service are welcome to submit a tender to do so. The tenders will be evaluated using pre-determined and advertised criteria.

“We would welcome a tender response from Carers IW if they feel that they are able to deliver the new service and wish to do so.

Any bid from Carers IW will be evaluated as with any other tender response.”

Carers IW has been providing support for unpaid carers on the Island for over 30 years and said carers would continue to be supported.

Their singing was interspersed with performances from the First Act Theatre Group, a group for people with learning disabilities. The performances received a standing ovation from the audience.

Hampshire and IOW Wildlife Trust (HIWWT) has two projects listed as finalists in the CPRE Annual Countryside Awards this autumn, and they need your help. The awards recognise schemes which celebrate beautiful, diverse and living countryside that everyone can value and enjoy.

In the Young People Category, HIWWT hope to make their mark with the Woodlands Apprentice scheme. The other is the New Forest Non-Native plants project in the Community and Voluntary work category.

The best of all finalists in the four categories will receive £500 towards the work of their project.

James Marsh, Reserves Manager for HIWWT said: “Looking after our woodlands is an increasingly rare skill, and one that has never been needed more. Thanks to the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund, we've been able to offer vital training to young people interested in the opportunity to gain practical experience and qualifications.

“As well as helping manage some of our nature reserves, such as Martin's Wood and Eaglehead Copse, the apprentices have worked on a number of other woodlands on the Island. In total they aim to restore at least ten woodlands across the East Wight which will contribute towards a connected network woodland habitat for vulnerable species.”

The Non-native Plants Project aims to stop the spread of species such as Himalayan Balsam which threatens the special wildlife of the New Forest, particularly along watercourses and in wetland habitats.

Catherine Chatter, New Forest Non-native Plants officer said: “Our wonderful volunteers play a vital role in helping to control these vigorous invaders, generously giving their time to work cheerfully in all weathers.”

A wonderful evening of entertainment and enjoyment resulted in over £700 being raised by a collection and raffle. The proceeds will be split between the Choir and First Act, which will enable them to continue entertaining audiences and raising even more money for Island charities and good causes.

David spots a sign of the times in Adgestone Road Keen photographer and IW Observer reader David Drury snapped this picture of a plethora of road signs at Lower Adgestone Road earlier this week. A total of 17 signs are shown in the picture of the junction, and he wonders whether this is an Island record.

The Brading resident said: “This is on a bad bend and there is too much information to take in quickly. As far as I can tell not all the signs are recent; some of them have been in place for some years.”

A spokesman from Island Roads said: "The permanent signs at the junction indicate the various traffic orders in place at this location.

These were implemented to indicate that the road is a narrow rural lane that is unsuitable for large vehicles and likely to be used by pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians.

“The ‘road closed’ and ‘diversion’ signs are temporary while road improvement work is carried out. Naturally, these will be removed on completion of

the project.

“Following recent changes to traffic sign regulations, and guidance provided by the Department for Transport regarding sign clutter, Island Roads has reviewed signs across the network to identify where signs may no longer be necessary.

“The Council will review the advice received from Island Roads and consider whether some of the regulatory signs at this location could be removed.”

Welsh choir visit is huge success The recent visit of the South Wales Male Choir was deemed a great success by Ryde Lions Club, who hosted the evening at All Saints’ Church.

An almost full to capacity church enjoyed the magnificent voices of the world famous Choir, with a performance that will be

long remembered. In support of the Choir, were nine local ladies who sang in four part harmony A Cappella, known as 'Cinnamon'.

Ryde Lions would like to thank everybody who went, and helped raise money to help fund another PSA(Cancer) testing day. This will take place at Ryde Academy in October.

Costs of cremations are increased again

Local Democracy Reporter - David Anderson Cremation costs on the Isle of Wight have increased for the eighth time in 10 years and the cheapest option will now cost loved ones over £800 for a basic cremation.

The standard charge from the Isle of Wight Council for 2019 is £807 for a 45-minute cremation, or £963 for an extended service, and there are a number of additional costs for extras.

This minimum fee has increased by more than 60 per cent since 2009, when the cost

was £497 — this is above the rate of inflation.

An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson said: “The Isle of Wight Council invested in the crematorium in 2012 with the introduction of new cremators and crematory systems.

“Prices are set annually to cover all associated service, utility and maintenance costs of the crematorium and local cemeteries.”

Additional costs at the Isle of Wight Crematorium in Whippingham include £156

for use of the chapel, £51 for a wooden casket and £14 for a biodegradable urn. Use of the organ costs £14, plus an organist fee of £47.

Prior to the service, there is a £32 charge for the use of the crematorium storage facility for the deceased. Weekend services cost more, with charges rising to £1,614 for the cremation and £156 for the organist.

Minimum costs range from £392 to £960 in the 183 council-run crematoria across the UK and Channel Islands, without additional

funeral expenses, according to recent BBC research.

The Isle of Wight Council said its fee was close to the national average.

If no funeral arrangements are made for a deceased person, the local authority has a duty to make suitable arrangements.

This is arranged and paid for by Environmental Health at a cost of £403.

The IW Council does not charge for cremations for under 18s.

I’m not lovin’ it!

Dear Editor, Driving through Newtown last week I was shocked to find a McDonalds carrier bag stuffed with the detritus of a substantial feast and dumped on top of a dog bin at the entrance to Town Copse. Two days later, I found a Kentucky Fried Chicken box.

Someone bought all this stuff at Newport the only likely source - drove five miles away to enjoy a picnic, packed up all the rubbish and then just left it there.

Litter - especially plastics - spells all sorts of trouble for wildlife. A few feet away was a noticeboard listing species lately spotted, including such rarities as nightingales and cuckoos. Birds and small animals crawl into bottles looking for food, become stuck and then starve or succumb to illness. They swallow plastic bags and choke to death.

Squirrels, lizards and owls at Newtown have in any case lately been driven out as the National Trust has broadened the paths and opened up these woodlands to cyclists and long-distance walkers and now, it seems, to

David Holmes is taking a short break - he will be back next week.

Beyond discussions at the bar many of us don’t bother too much with politics. Unless directly affected we are too busy living our lives.

But to borrow a phrase coined in a speech on South Africa by the then Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, “The wind of change is blowing through this continent.” Well, I believe a storm is brewing up in the Western World and previously politically inactive citizens are no longer prepared to simply accept what the Elite and the Establishment tell them. They are in an angry mood and beginning to question many pronouncements made by so called experts, whatever the subject.

Sir John Redwood MP has just published a book called “We don’t believe you”. He seeks to examine this loss of faith in the ruling classes. It makes for interesting reading. His first target is the national central banks. They allowed the private banking sector to profiteer for years through dodgy derivatives and other dubious financial instruments, but when things started to go wrong they came down like a ton of bricks on the institutions, making a bad situation much, much worse. Long years of austerity followed and we, the ordinary people, were made to pay through falling living standards. Both political left and right wings hate the word ‘austerity’, because they know we realise it was imposed on us by the Establishment’. Yes, that’s right, the politicians.

We know instinctively it’s unsustainable to keep on allowing in over a quarter of a million immigrants every year. It puts chronic strain on local societies, housing, education, our transport services and the

NHS. Politicians know it too; they keep promising cuts, but the latest annual figures (June 2018) still show net migration at 273,000. If we dare protest we are derided as ‘Little Englanders’ or worse still ‘racists’. Who by? The Elite, who always know what’s best for us.

The vast majority of us want and welcome a modern, inclusive society, but we also know there are many LBGTQ+ policies completely out of touch with mainstream opinion. How many young girls (or their parents) are comfortable with single sex toilets? Were we ever asked? No. Once again we are marginalised and ignored.

Recent official figures show that one in 50 male prisoners self-identify as transgender, entitling them to shower alone, separate cells and to apply for transfer to a female jail, where regimes are much easier. Could some of them be trying it on? Who knows?

The survey didn’t ask!

To quote Sir John, “Global warming theory leads to anti-car policy many voters dislike.

It imposes what popularists call thought control on people as their children are taught the new religion and condemned for questioning it. The Elite have a new religion.

Many electors see it as an attack on their living standards and way of life.

The media don’t help and are often seen as the propaganda tool of the Elite. The BBC is singled out and a campaign group have recently easily raised crowdfunding to fight a court case against the Corporation for alleged bias.

I guess the final test will be Brexit. Will we leave as promised by our new Prime Minister on October 31? Or will the Elite and the Establishment find a way to exert their dwindling powers to stop it happening? If they do I believe that the people will finally find their voice – and the ruling classes won’t like it!

Visitors to the bird hide recently topped 100 during a single session - roughly three times the norm during all my ten years as a bird hide manager there when the human ‘footprint’ was already considered by local wildlife watchers to be reaching saturation point and when any form of catering was strenuously opposed as only likely to add to the problem.

Yet despite protests from their volunteers - and a survey which showed the visitors themselves didn't want one - the National Trust is now offering its own food outlet.

McDonalds are not to blame for their customers’ carelessness either. Indeed when I presented the Newport branch manager with the evidence he was quick to print off a couple of posters with the company's famous Golden Arches logo - and the message ‘Keep Newtown for the birds! Please dispose of your rubbish responsibly.’

For that at least I'm lovin' it, as they say.

Parking fine waived Dear Editor, I want to say a huge thank you to the IW Observer for the coverage you gave to the iniquitous parking fines being handed out by Premier Park at the Red Jet ferry terminal at Cowes.

My car was blocked in when I was picking up a friend and as I was unable to leave Fountain Yard I received a fine. I contacted the team at the Observer who made me aware of the ten minute grace period allowed above the stated parking time. Premier still refused my appeal so thanks to the help and advice of the Observer's team, I appealed to POPLA who I am delighted to say have resolved the

matter in my favour and I do not have to pay the parking fine that Premier threatened me with. In fact POPLA advised me that Premier did not even contest my appeal, so I was put to a lot of worry for nothing.

Red Funnel should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this situation to be happening to people who park in Fountain Yard for one reason only and that is to pick up their passengers from their ferry.

I am very grateful to all the staff at the Observer who have been so helpful.

Nationalism of the ferries?

Dear Editor, It is bonkers to think nationalisation of our ferries will solve the issue of high fares. You just replace one problem with another more complex model.

Both Labour and Conservatives have, over many terms, embraced private investment.

Labour in hospitals, which were leased back to trusts at considerable cost; Tories in franchising transport with serious price hikes making UK one of the most expensive rail networks in Europe, despite what the Rail Delivery Group say.

By example we can take a look at where your rail ticket is spent - it's a complex structure, but in summary over 70% of cost is spent on elements outside your control. City finance, single source contracts, leasing costs, maintenance, track access and franchising.

Fuel and profit are in single figures!

To think running a franchised ferry will be structured any differently is smoke and mirrors.

To be fair Wightlink do offer some concessions to Islanders, Red Funnel less so, I've found Gold card often more expensive per leg based on spot prices - it works best on peak time travel.

Both companies make it difficult for Islanders, with limited restrictions on use or expiry on preloaded cards.

Is it too much to ask for a straight discount on all journeys for Island residents and simplified preloaded card systems that offer "honest savings" - after all, the ferry company get our money up front.

Tree planting in memory of Tom Mclaughlin Dear Editor, This Saturday 17th of August, members of Transition Island planted a Tree in memory of Tom Mclaughlin at the Coppins Bridge Forest Garden in Newport.

Tom passed away unexpectedly in May and has left a huge hole behind him. He was a Sustainability Pioneer in South-Africa who dedicated his life to making this world a better and greener place. Tom had only been on the Island for a year, but had already

managed to make a difference by helping plant edible plants outside County Hall and advising the Isle of Wight Council on Food Waste processing. His passing is a huge loss to the Island. It is also a loss to those he met who came to see him as a true friend.

Tom will always be remembered. May his dedication serve as an inspiration to each one of us to make our Island - and our Planet - a little bit greener.

Centenary commemoration for Major Herbert Chevers

Night-time work to upgrade busy road sections The Priest in Charge of Christ Church, Sandown, the Rev Mark Williams welcomed representatives of Sandown, Shanklin and Lake Town and Parish Councils, to the centenary commemoration of the Commonwealth War Grave of Major Herbert Longmore Grant Chevers, who died on August 10, 1919. Royal British Legion Bugler Daryll Pitcher played at the ceremony.

Major Chevers was the son of Deputy Surgeon General Norman Chevers, and served in the Royal Army Medical Corps, and had previously been promoted following his work in South Africa.

Rev Williams said: "We felt it appropriate to commemorate the sacrifice made by Major Chevers highlighting that although the Great War ended in 1918 many people injured during the conflict died subsequently, and their contribution should be honoured."

Sandown councillor Debbie Andre added: "It is important to remember the events of 100 years ago, and we have worked with colleagues across the Bay to provide information on all Commonwealth War Graves in the Bay." Shanklin Mayor Steve Knight added: "We have a duty to remember the sacrifices made by the Bay, and the Island, in World War I, and by working together we can ensure their memories live on."

The councils in the Bay, have also worked together to provide a map of defibrillators

and their locations in the Bay, as part of a wider community project.

Lake acting Chair Bob Blezzard said: "It was really good to see Bay councillors working together, and we hope this continued into the future, as projects such as these show the value of joint working."

Improvements are to be carried out to busy sections of the Island’s highway network in a series of night-time resurfacing projects by Island Roads this month.

Cedar Hill at Carisbrooke, Shanklin Road’s approach to Whiteley Bank roundabout and West Street in Ryde are all scheduled for improvement work.

In Newport, the Lidl roundabout at Holyrood Street, the Daish Way Roundabout, and South Street, Newport outside the bus station are all also programmed for improvement.

The works are being undertaken overnight in order to reduce disruption given the busy nature of the sites.

Information signs will be put out in advance of the schemes to advise motorists of the necessary closures and letters will be sent to affected residents to explain more about the work.

The improvement will be undertaken between the hours of 7.30pm and 6am

although the Lidl Roundabout will remain open until 10pm each night to accommodate the late opening hours of the store.

Keith Gourlay, Island Roads construction manager, said: “These are all schemes to improve busy roads and junctions but by working at night – as we have done throughout the project – we do hope to minimise disruption.”

As always, the programme is subject to change but the Shanklin Road scheme, which includes the renewal of high friction surfacing is scheduled for four nights starting August 19, Lidl and Dodnor roundabouts for one night each on August 27 and 28 respectively, Cedar Hill in Carisbrooke over a single night on August 29, South Street on August 30 and West Street for nine nights starting Sept 2.

The scheme is part of the Island’s Highway Improvement Programme which is financed in the main through a grant of £477 million awarded by the Department for Transport.

Stuart cycles length of Britain for hospital fund

Home buyers make use of Help to Buy scheme More than 200 home buyers on the Isle of Wight have used the government’s Help to Buy scheme with the vast majority being first time buyers. Latest government figures reveal that 232 buyers on the Island have used the scheme since it was launched in April 2013.

The figures reveal first time buyers accounted for 84 per cent of sales, and local housebuilder Barratt Homes says the scheme has been a real game-changer for many people.

Michelle Storer, sales director for Barratt Homes, said the scheme has proved invaluable for first time buyers and those using the equity in their current home as their deposit to move up the housing ladder, adding: “It’s vital that we keep spreading the word that buyers need just a five per cent deposit to buy a new home so we can help even more buyers this year."

Help to Buy allows any homebuyer to

secure a brand-new home under the value of £600,000 with just a five per cent deposit.

The government lends the buyer 20 per cent of the value of the property in the form of an interest-free equity loan for five years, meaning that buyers then gain access to some of the great mortgage rates currently available with just a 75 per cent mortgage.

Available to all home buyers, not just firsttimers, the scheme helps anyone looking for a boost up the property ladder.

Barratt Homes is currently working on new developments on the Isle of Wight including St George’s Gate in Shide and Hawthorn Meadows in Whippingham.

Stuart Chatfield from Niton has recently completed a gruelling cycle ride of nearly 1,000 miles, from Lands End to John O’ Groats, to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital, London.

Stuart was accompanied by six friends, and completed the ride in 10 days, which meant a total of around 70 hours on the saddle. He said: “My son Ned had two operations on his head at Great Ormond Street Hospital when he was very young; the first when he was six months old, and the second about six months later. He is now eight years old, and has been

fully discharged, so I decided to embark on the cycle ride as a ‘thank you’ to those who helped him.”

He continued: “I cycle a bit, but nothing like this before. We were very lucky with the weather, because throughout the whole journey we only had about two hours of rain.”

Busy weekend for emergency services

The emergency and rescue services had a busy time around the Island's coastline last weekend (August 17 & 18).

On Saturday the Hampshire and Isle of Wight and Thames Valley Air Ambulances and the Coastguard helicopter, along with paramedics, were called out to assist a 16 year old boy who had fallen part way down a cliff at Yaverland. He was airlifted to Southampton Hospital with multiple injuries, which are not thought to be life threatening. Bembridge Coastguard took to social media to warn all of the dangers of getting too close to the edge of cliffs.

On the same day the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was attended on the beach at Seaview where a woman had slipped and fallen on rocks; she was taken to St Mary's Hospital for treatment.

On Sunday the Needles Coastguard Rescue Team assisted the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service in rescuing an injured woman at Brambles Chine near Freshwater; she was carried by stretcher to a waiting ambulance and transferred to St Mary's Hospital.

Free first aid course aimed at all bikers

Do you ride a motorcycle? Would you know exactly what to do in the event of an accident? If the answers to those questions are 'Yes' and 'No', then you should be booking yourself onto a free first aid course designed specifically for bikers. Many bikers ride in pairs or groups and when an accident happens the first person on the scene will often be a fellow biker.

The 'Biker Down' course delivered by the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service covers a strategy for accident scene management, first aid requirements of an injured motorcyclist (including issues about helmet removal) and bikers' visibility. The next course will be held on Tuesday, September 17 at Ryde Fire Station at 6pm. The course takes around three hours to complete and you can book a place by calling 823399 or by e-mail to road.safety@iow.gov.uk.

Make sure your answers to those two questions are 'Yes' and 'Yes'.

Close rivalry at Shanklin and Sandown GC Captains’ Day

Shanklin and Sandown Golf Club held their annual Joint Captains’ Day Am-Am competition, this year dubbed the Captains’ Revenge.

From a shotgun start, 16 teams took to the fairways, and revenge it proved, as many greens had been strewn with obstacles; an antiquated driver had to be used on the 10th, and the wobbly putter on the ninth made putting more of a nightmare.

To make matters worse, the heavens opened at tee-off time, although this had not been at

the behest of the Captains.

Pat Cavaliero, Paul Cock, Paul Lassey and Ray Winter just took the first prize on count-back, after scoring 92 points. Runners up were Peter Parmenter, David Ames, John Rich and Steve Brewer on 92, and third place went to Harvey Simpkins, Kevin Simpkins, Darren Wood and Ian Miller with 88 points.

Two nearest the pin prizes were also presented. For the ladies’ Jenny Domoney took the honours and, for the men, Derek Brown.

Jan is off to Sweden after super show in Nationals

Wight Tri member and IW Talented Athlete sponsored athlete, Jan Fletcher completed a super race at the English National Championships at the Bedford Sprint Triathlon.

As this was also the final qualifier for the 2020 European Age Group Sprint Championships in Malmo, Sweden, it was well loaded with the top age group triathletes.

The swim was held at the Boxend water sports lake, outside Bedford, with the swimmers following the 750m loop around the water skiing course. This was followed by a 20km cycle route around the winding country roads, with a tough off-road 5km run completed the course.

Jan had a solid swim in 14:50, to exit the lake in ninth position in her age group. With a quick transition onto the bike, she showed her strength and posted the fifth fastest bike split in her age group of 36:10, moving up into eighth position, but also closing in on the faster swimmers.

With a super fast run of 23:20, Jan finished in an overall timed of 1:16:36 to take a brilliant seventh position from 25 in the 40-44 age group.

However, as this was also the final qualification for the 2020 ETU European Age Group Sprint Championships, she took the third qualifier slot for the 45-49 category and will represent Team GB in her first sprint triathlon event.

Jan has already earned her first GB kit this year at the European Standard Distance Triathlon in Weert in June, and has also qualified for the 2020 ITU World Age Group Standard Distance Triathlon in Canada.

Men’s Senior Fours among Ryde winners at Regatta Ryde Rowing Club competed at the last Hants and Dorset Regatta of the season, hosted by BTC Rowing Club but switched from their usual Western Shore, Southampton venue to the home of Coalporters A.R.C. at Northam Bridge, Southampton, because of the weather forecast.

This meant a complete re-draw and restricted entries that led to the Club J16 Four and the third Senior Pair being unable to compete.

However, the Wightlink sponsored club achieved a notable success when

their Men’s Senior Four A Crew of Ollie Bottrell, Matt Allsopp, Mark Chatwin and Mike Ewing, coxed by Owen Barnaby, won their event in style to ensure selection to represent the Association at the South-coast Championship in Dartmouth, Devon in September. It is the 38th time the Club has received this honour.

A second Senior Four of Nick Pike, Max Murdock, Tom Hammond and Alex Miller coxed by Rebekah Edgar, finished third in the heat, missing out on a place in the final.

The Club also had two Senior Pairs racing; the A Crew of Ollie Bottrell and Mark Chatwin, and the B of Mike Ewing and Alex Miller, but both failed to make the final. However, in the single sculls Mike Ewing convincingly won his semi-final in the Senior event and finished second in the final, but Joel Smith in the Men’s Coastal Sculls failed to make his final as did the young Austin Smith in the Men’s Novice Sculls event.

IOWMCC hold special trial to pay tribute to Nigel Crouch The Isle of Wight Motorcycle Club have held a special trial in memory of Nigel Crouch, who sadly passed away in January, 2018. He served on the Club’s committee for over 40 years, holding the post of Hon. Treasurer for most of those. He was a popular character who always saw the best in everyone, an inspiration to all – very sadly missed but fondly remembered.

The trial was held at Pagham Farm, Rookley, designed to be a relaxed, fun event, with the emphasis on participation, remembrance and just enjoying the trial together. There were 41 riders and it was good to see two of Nigel’s bikes in action – his Montesa 247T and his beloved Greeves Anglian.

Awards sponsored by two of Nigel’s close friends, Dave Rose and Joe Henderson, were a stunning silverplated Cup called the NMC Memorial Trophy from Dave, and something a bit different all the way from Australia, Joe Henderson’s ‘True Spirit’ Award.

The True Spirit Award went to Mark Coombes, who completed the four laps of eight, on the B route, with a clean sheet, and then took himself off to pick up the flags – effectively clearing the sections twice. True spirit indeed!

Nigel was very well known for inspiring and encouraging younger riders and that legacy clearly continues to have an influence. The NMC Memorial Trophy was awarded jointly to two of the Club’s youth riders, Alfie Haydon and Josh Morris.

Both lads have improved so much this

year and decided to step up into the Youth Experts especially for the day.

Chris Stay and George Gosden were in action, providing some excellent spectating in the Elite class, riding the sort of stuff most can only ever dream about! Chris is leading the British Championship Expert class by four points going into the final two rounds, due to be held in Scotland in September.

Powerboats set to roar into thrilling action off Cowes The 59th Cowes Powerboat race weekend will see teams competing for the UKOPRA World Championships over this August Bank Holiday. Teams will be participating in the final round of three for the UKOPRA Worlds in three Offshore Classes.

Richard Carlton currently leads the 2019 Offshore 1 UKOPRA World Championship and needs a good result at Cowes if he is going to win the title. Carlton with his crew of Phil and Neil Payter have been consistent in their historic ‘Bubbledeck’ Cigarette with a third at the Poole Bay 100 and a second place in Guernsey.

Cowes will also host the third and final round of the 2019 UKOPRA World Championship for three Offshore Classes.

The boats will be racing in the Cowes-PooleCowes event, a 65.7nm course that will start adjacent to the Royal Yacht Squadron and take competitors to Boscombe and Bournemouth Piers before they head for home.

The 21 strong fleet will feature six lady racers, Sue Baker, Charlotte Camsey, Sue Cosgrave, Colleen Sweeney, Michelle Murray and Hollie Woodhouse.

With over 36 boats entered for all the races, including boats from the UK, Italy, Monaco,

USA and Bermuda, this year promises to be the biggest for some years.

The 200-mile Cowes-Torquay-Cowes race has long been recognised as one of powerboats’ toughest challenges. The boats will be based in Cowes Yacht Haven and spectators will be able to get close up views from the harbour walls all day tomorrow (Sat) and early Sunday.

On Sunday the sound of roaring engines and activity on the water will be evident from approximately 9.15am when the racing fleet will parade past Cowes Green before mustering to the east of the Cowes Harbour entrance. Race boats will then pass at speed in a convoy past the Snowden sailing mark before starting the actual race to the sound of the cannon between the Royal Yacht Squadron line and the north of Gurnard North Cardinal Buoy at 10am.

The main race will be followed by the Cowes-Poole-Cowes race start at 10:15am.

Cowes-Poole boats will start to appear back in the Solent from 11am. Depending on the conditions, the fastest Cowes-Torquay boats should start to appear back in the western Solent from 11.45am for a finish off the Gurnard North Cardinal Mark at Egypt Point.

Yachtsmen ease past Fawley in Senior Cup Fawley 0 Cowes Sports 3 Cowes Sports eased into the next round of the Hampshire Senior Cup on Wednesday evening with a polished performance against their Wessex League, Division One opponents.

Yachtsmen manager Steve Rutter used the match to give pitch-time for a few of his players who are pushing for a regular first team place, and he said: “It was a good, solid performance, and good to bring a few different lads into the fold - some coming back from injuries, and others pushing for a first team start.

“We are still working on certain areas, and are improving all the time, but it was a positive win that keeps the momentum going.”

The Yachtsmen were two goals ahead at half time, thanks to goals from Jimmy Wykes and Jez Conway, and they made the game safe in the second period when Connor Furmidge added the third.

Rutter admitted that the win over Fawley has left him with selection decisions to make for their Wessex League, Premier Division game at home to Brockenhurst tomorrow (Sat). He said: “I should have a good selection to pick from, but it’s the old scenario at this time of year, that some of the lads are still playing cricket, and will start playing football when that season is over. I love cricket, but I will be glad when the cricket season has

finished.”

He added: “This will be a big game for us against a strong side, but if we can keep doing what we have been setting ourselves up to do, then we should be all right. I have told all the players just to focus on their own individual performances, and let me worry about putting it all together.”

The Yachtsmen also have a home game against Downton in the Wessex League Cup on Tuesday evening (7.45pm).

Fun jumping at Kingates!

A fun jumping show at Kingates Equestrian proved hugely popular, and turned out to be an awesome day for riders and spectators alike.

Kingates thanked everyone who competed and supported the event, saying it was great to do something different and have some extra fun.

Kingates also passed on ‘a huge thank you’ to the judges and helpers who made the event possible.

Ventnor try spree in warm-up for season

Ventnor Rugby Club’s FC’s first game of pre-season resulted in a 54-10 win over Harwich and Doverport RUFC. It proved the perfect warm-up for the campaign which begins with a Cup clash at home to Isle of Wight RFC on September 7, with their first league game away to

Romsey RFC on September 14.

Against Harwich, both teams played with mixed squads to get as many players game time as possible. The game was played in excellent spirit with referee Matt Edwards commenting on the great atmosphere between the two

well connected clubs.

Scoring for Ventnor were Jake Babington, with a hat trick of tries; Sam Lines with two, and Ed Blake, Chris Hill, Ross Harris, Ben Atkins and Alan Fox one apiece.

Relegation looms after failure for Ryde

It was a frustrating day for Ryde Cricket Club in their Hants Division One game away to Burridge Seconds.

Rain the previous day left the Burridge pitch damp in parts, so it was preferable for both sides to win the toss and bowl first.

Unfortunately for Ryde, it was Burridge who won the toss, and as expected they put Ryde into bat. In difficult batting conditions, Ryde lost two quick wickets and were 7-2 after five overs.

A dogged performance by Kerry Rice (61) helped Ryde to an eventual total of 171-8

from their 50 overs.

Burridge, in reply, lost one of their openers early as Ryde captain, Stuart Robertson bowled accurately and aggressively, but the other opener rode his luck to hit 67, and set up Burridge for a two-wicket win. Robertson finished with 3-27 from his 10 overs, but Ryde remain in the relegation zone with just two games to play.

Ryde Seconds’ game at home to Froxfield was called off due to the wet pitch.

They remain second in Hants Division Four, and are hopeful of promotion.

East Cowes Vics 1 Bemerton Heath Harlequins 1 East Cowes Vics responded to manager Steve Brougham’s demands for a better performance when they played hosts to Bemerton last weekend, and picked up their first Wessex League, Division One point of the new campaign.

Brougham said: “It was a really good display, and it shows the lads can do it. It was encouraging that we fought back after going down to 10 players with half an hour still remaining, and then falling behind with 15 minutes left.

“But we showed a lot of character to get back level, and with a bit of luck we could have snatched the victory. In the end we had a few tired legs, and that was what probably prevented us from taking all three points. However, it gave the lads a bit of belief that they can do it, and I hope that continues.”

Vics sensed they would be in for a difficult last half hour when Liam Newbold was dismissed for a second yellow card offence, and it then became an even tougher task as Bemerton took the lead through Justin Bennett.

Brougham added: “I feared the worst then, but we just seemed to give it a go and Henry West scored the equaliser we deserved. It was a good goal, because after Bemerton cleared the ball to the edge of the area, he half-volleyed it into the net.”

Cowes Sports boss Steve Rutter had few complaints after his side picked up another useful point in their weekend Wessex League, Premier Division clash. Followinng the home draw with Bashley, Rutter accepted: “It was a fair result, because it was a tough game and they caused us some problems.

“They were stronger in the opening period, so at half time I would have been satisfied with a point. But at the end of 90 minutes I was a bit disappointed because we cancelled out their threats, and stopped them from causing us too many problems, and we also had a couple of chances to nick it.

However, overall, no complaints.”

Rutter continued: “There were a lot of positives, because we had a few players missing through injury and unavailability, so we put people in positions that we had not looked at them before, and they all did very well. I was proud of them.”

The Yachtsmen took the lead when Jez Conway swung in a corner, and Ashley Brett was perfectly positioned to do the rest. But the Island outfit failed to consolidate over the following 10 minutes or so, and that allowed Bashley to get back into the contest, leaving them unbeaten in three.

However, after the equaliser, the Yachtsmen knuckled down to assure themselves of a draw, and move into a secure midtable position with four points from their first three games.

Jack keeps in trim at the London Triathlon Wight Tri member Jack Elton-Walters returned to the London Triathlon for the fifth time, this year more as a participant than a competitor with no friends to race against, and with his season's key target, the Island Games, completed a few weeks ago.

After concentrating on cycling for the previous weekend's mountainous Etape du Tour in France, the London Triathlon was only the second time he'd swam

since the Island Games, so the relatively slow swim time of 31:30 was reasonable.

Out on the bike, a stiff headwind on the the outward half of each of the two laps slowed everyone's times, but riding a road bike with clip-on bars rather than a full TT rig as last year, Elton-Walters finished the bike with a time of 1:04:44 for the 40km route on the closed roads of Central London.

On the run and negotiating the

congested and narrow four laps, most of the 10km route was covered at a fair pace, and a strong sprint over the final 400 metres gave a run time of 43:11, and a total time of 2:25:30.

Jacks results were: Overall: 206 of 1,847; Men: 194 of 1,430 Age (30-34): 41 of 293.

Niton Football Club has been awarded a grant from The FA’s Stay in the Game scheme to help aid the club’s retention of its adult male players, giving them the financial support to cover the costs incurred by grassroots clubs.

The Stay in the Game scheme is funded by The FA and delivered by the Football Foundation, with grants of £750 awarded to existing clubs in order to boost financial sustainability and allow them to continue offering playing opportunities in organised football.

The grants can be used towards match day and training facility hire and league affiliation costs, as well as covering match day subs for individuals that aren’t able to afford their regular match fees.

Stuart Chatfield, Niton FC Committee Member said: “The funding from the Football Foundation will help the club pay for ground hire while we play away from Springhead, its home ground, which we hope to be back playing at towards the end of this season.”

Port make it two wins on the road

Ringwood Town 3 Newport 5 Newport recovered from being a goal down early on to emphatically beat early Wessex League, Division One leaders, Ringwood with a sparkling display last weekend.

Although delighted with the outcome, Port manager Andy Sampson claimed he would not have been surprised if his side had won by a bigger margin. He said: “We were a bit slow getting going, and they punished us in the eighth minute, but that was when we we started getting back into the game, and were 3-1 up at half time.

“We added a fourth soon after the restart, and it could easily have been five or six. But we gave them one back from a free kick, and then while we had a player in the sin bin they scored another. But as soon as we were back to 11 men, we scored again to make the game safe.”

With a few regulars missing, Newport soon recovered from being a goal behind, as Neo Lamb levelled, before Connor Kelly and Mark Taylor put them in charge. Five minutes into the second half Newport broke out of midfield, and Kelly played an inch-perfect pass for the onrushing Liam Triggs to side-foot home.

Ringwood cut the lead on 61 minutes, and when Taylor was yellow carded for a foul, he continued to argue with the referee and was sent to the sin bin. That allowed Ringwood to make it 4-3. But after Taylor returned, Kelly beat the Ringwood offside trap to add the fifth.

Sampson added: “We’ve played two away games with the bare 12-man squad, but won them both, which is very pleasing. We just need to make sure we stick together as a squad, and not just rely on 11 players.”

Shanklin Sandown crew in fine form at final regatta

Attrill steers Island into ECB B Cup semi-finals Ben Attrill hit three 50-plus scores as the Isle of Wight rallied to clinch a place in the ECB 50-over B Cup semi-finals against Hertfordshire at Knebworth Park.

Attrill (pictured) made scores of 58 in the 61-run win in Cornwall, and 51 in the threewicket victory over Wiltshire, but saved his best against Dorset at Newclose.

The Island were in desperate trouble at 57-5 when Attrill (72) joined Grayshott’s Ali Wheble (62) in a century stand which carried the IW to 220-6 and to an eventual 28-run win which secured top spot in the group.

Attrill, who is planning to spend the winter playing club cricket in Western Australia, also scored 58 in the three-day drawn match against Dorset. All the Island team’s Championship matches were drawn. Spinner Dan Cox took 19 wickets in both formats.

Brading flex their muscles with two early goal bursts Brading Town are the early pacesetters in the Isle of Wight Harwoods - Renault Saturday League, with two crushing victories from their opening two games. They followed up their 7-1 victory at ECS, by putting 14 without reply past Pan Sports. Then in midweek they made it three wins in a row by beating West Wight 3-0.

It took Brading 31 minutes to get the first against Pan before the floodgates opened.

Aaron Burford broke the deadlock and then Josh Younie and Oliver Wilson added two more before half time.

Brading scored four in five minutes in the second period, through Valer, Burford (2) for his second successive hat trick, and Wilson.

Aaron Bennett also helped himself to a hattrick, Matt Bennett grabbed two and Wilson scored a couple more to take his tally to four.

Goalscorers against West Wight were Luke Hitchcox, Daniel Vale and Aaron Bennett,

all three coming in the last half hour of the game.

It means Brading already have a goal difference of 23, and although these are very early days, the future looks bright for them again, especially after reigning champions Whitecroft and Barton Sports could only manage a point from a 2-2 draw in their opening game at Shanklin. Josh Appell and Freddy Knowles were on target for the visitors.

In other Division One games, Bembridge edged Northwood St Johns 3-2; ECS beat Binstead and COB 2-1, and Ventnor won 3-1 at Carisbrooke. There were also victories for Sandown, 3-0 at Ryde Saints, and Cowes Sports, 5-1 at West Wight. Also in midweek, Cowes Sports Reserves drew 1-1 with Carisbrooke United.

Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club enjoyed more success at the final Hants and Dorset regatta of the season. The Men’s Junior four of George Glenister, Jamie Gamble, Riley Horrix, Ethan Walters and cox Emily Faithfull who, having secured the Regional championship at the last regatta, were made to work hard to claim an unbeaten record this season.

The crew came from a length and a half down at the turn, in an exciting finish, to claim the narrowest of victories over Christchurch. The Men’s junior pair of Gamble and Glenister, also the Hants & Dorset champions, added another trophy to their collection, finishing the season with a resounding victory.

Lottie Tapsell secured an excellent third place in the Ladies’ novice sculls final after knocking out the club’s only rival for the championship in the semis, thus securing a third Hants & Dorset title for the club this season. Fellow scullers Emily Faithfull and

Rachael Debenham, while not progressing to the finals in their respective events, showed that the club has strength in depth and this bodes well for next season.

The club’s Masters 50 crew of Andrew Tapsell, Paul Gamble, Gary Burch, Garry Walters and Rachael Debenham finished second behind Poole, while the Masters 40 crew just missed out on a final spot with a solid performance.

The Junior Ladies’ crew of Roxy Browne, Sophie Atkin, Rachael Debenham, Yasmin Wright and Emily Faithfull again showed an improved performance, but were beaten in the semi-finals by the championship runners-up from Christchurch.

The crews will now start their preparations for the South Coast Championships in September, where the Men’s Junior four will represent the H&D region in the Championship event.

Sandown edge close match against Bembridge A team

Despite preparations for Bembridge Week there were still league games to be played and valuable points to be won for Bembridge Bowling Club members.

The Men’s A team were in action at Sandown A who have been flying high in Division One. The match was closely fought throughout and although Bembridge won on two rinks, Sandown secured the victory on the basis of overall shot scores. Colin Vines, David Brown, Chris Brown and Alan Coleman continued their recent good form and won 27-23. It was a welcome return from international duty for John Pearce who with Jack Liddiard, Brian Sewell and Alan Scovell edged home 24-20.

Chris Emms, Norman Cooper, Ken Davis and Alan Cox ran into an opposition skip, Bob Mortlock, in top form and lost 12-30. Final result: Sandown 6 points, Bembridge 4.

Already promoted, Bembridge B team were able to approach their match against Plessey D in a relaxed manner. Geoff Clement, Derek Selway, Mike Davidson and Alan Bugby ran

out comfortable winners 19-8. Keith Watford, Bill Silvester, Doug Beckett and Peter Hudson started poorly but rallied to minimise the loss to 17-22. Peter Swinfield, John Graham, Gordon Holmes and Bernie Allen also started slowly but their rally led to a comfortable 22-15 win. Final result: Bembridge 8 points, Plessey 2.

The Ladies’ D team were scheduled to play three matches last week but only one survived the bad weather and they may have regretted that the match against Shanklin C went ahead as they lost heavily. Final result: Bembridge 0 points, Shanklin 6.

The Men’s E team battled hard in their match against Newport C and this was reflected in the narrow overall shot score of 47 - 50 in favour of Newport. Final result: Bembridge 3 points Newport 7. A depleted Men’s C team struggled against Newport B and went down to a heavy defeat. Final result: Bembridge 0 points Newport 10.

Allsopp takes series with a little help from his friends!

Wightlink Wight Mountain RT riders Kev Chant, James Veal and Matt Allsopp raced in the final round of the Fatcreations series at Goodwood, with Allsopp (pictured) in the lead for the series. But it was still very close between the top three so the pressure was on for Allsopp to defend his place at the top.

Both Chant and Veal dominated the race from the start, covering moves and chasing down breaks then getting Allsopp into the best position for the sprints, winning both primes and the final sprint. The latter was a battle until the end between the top three riders in the series, but with the Island team working so well together, Allsopp gathered enough points to win the series comfortably.

Meanwhile, Veal also competed in the John Holman Road Race in Shaftesbury.

In a field of 60 riders, mainly Second Cat, Veal’s tactics were to try to create an early break to avoid getting blocked as the course was on narrow wet roads.

He was able to get into several early breaks, but unfortunately the fastmoving peloton managed to reel them in. The fast pace continued with other attacks being neutralised.

After recovering for a lap Veal

tried one last attack with two kilometres remaining. Again he was caught at the base of the final climb, and finished in the main bunch.

Relegated Ventnor thwarted by rain Ventnor Cricket club, already relegated from the Southern Premier League, Division One, following a disappointing season, were unable to play their home game against leaders Hook and Newnham Basics.

The match was due to take place at Steephill, but following heavy overnight rain, water seeped under the covers and onto the pitch, making it impossible to start.

Ventnor have just two more league games remaining this summer, and will be desperately hoping they can still achieve their first win, following 15 defeats and one no result.

They visit Rowledge tomorrow, and then complete their programme at home to Sparsholt next Saturday (Aug 31).

Bowls trophy cut short as Carrett wins again Ryde Marina Bowls Club’s Willey Family Trophy, a one-day competition, has taken place. The trophy was presented to Ryde Marina BC by the Willeys, a well respected firm of local solicitors. The event was drawn mixed triples, with each team playing the others in a round-robin format.

Unfortunately, the planned number of ends could not be completed due to a downpour which made the green unplayable. Members found the bar was open so the winners were declared a little earlier than expected as Sue Penney, John Smith and John Carrett. This is another trophy for John Carrett who recently won the Bowls Isle of Wight County Pairs title with his partner Brian Taplin.

Vics see off Hamble Club in dramatic penalty shoot-out Hamble Club 2 East Cowes Vics 3 (Vics won 4-3 on penalties) Jimmi Burton led the East Cowes Vics charge as they pulled off a dramatic victory over Wessex League, Premier Division outfit Hamble Club in the Hampshire Senior Cup in midweek.

Vics upset the odds as they reached the next round of the competition by winning a penalty shoot-out after the game ended all square.

In-form Burton shot Vics into a two-goal lead in the opening half, before Hamble pulled one back just before the break. But the Island outfit gave as good as they got against a side one division higher, and it was not until the final few minutes that Hamble scored their second to take the tie into a nail-biting penalty shoot-out. Vics kept their nerve the better to win the showdown, and progress to the next round. Vics scored their first three penalties through Burton, Liam Newbold and Ryan Gregory. Although Joe Butcher missed his spot kick, Hamble missed two of theirs, leaving Alex Harmer to score from the spot, and wrap up the win.

Vics manager Steve Brougham said: “We played very well.

It was a good, keen performance and I felt we deserved the victory. We defended well, although we should have cleared the ball for their late equaliser. But I said before the game it was a good performance I wanted rather than just a result, because to be honest it is a competition we are not really going to win. What did please me though was that we continued the good form we showed when taking a point off Bemerton last weekend. That is what I want to see every game, although it is difficult when we have players out through injury, suspension or for personal reasons.”

While the Redwings are away, the One-Designs..!

While Bembridge Sailing Club’s Redwings were at Cowes, with Quail, helmed by Ed Peel and Jockey Wilson not only won the white group, but with five wins was the most prolific winner overall, the One-Designs were racing at Bembridge.

Seven One-Designs had two excellent races, albeit only one boat actually qualified which meant that, provided they finished both races, the Rosses in No 11 were bound to win!

Mark Grzegorczyk in No 9, crewed

by Isabel Gilbey, was out in front and, despite best efforts by Susie Beart in No 5 and John Suffield in No 4, they finished a minute ahead. The second race saw No

9 making it look easy; the battle was therefore for second and third, and No 12 came in ahead of the Bearts in No 5.

The Rosses were fourth which secured them the Spouses Trophy.

Nine One-Designs raced for the annual Cartwright Prize – two bottles of Champagne. Carrying on from where they left off the day before, Mark Grzegorczyk and Isabel Gilbey powered into the lead and were well ahead with Hugh Doherty and Jos Coad in No 10 second after they crash tacked onto starboard in front of Susie and Syd Beart in No 5.

It was No 5 that took the lead on the second round and held onto it for the

rest of the race. Peter Summerhayes with his daughter Catherine helming No 1 were second.

At Seaview in the SVYC Regatta, only two One-Designs made it; No 1 crewed by Peter Summerhayes and helmed by Catherine, and No 9 helmed

by Russ Fowler supported by Simon Allocca. Team Summerhayes reached the first mark in front, and enjoyed a comfortable victory. Although it was quite a short race, there were no grumbles as it was gusting F7 by the time they got back to the Under Tyne moorings.

Danyon Hume signalled his intentions as early as heat one with an impressive victory, one of four wins from his five rides.

produced 5-1 wins in heats 13 and 15 to scupper the Colts faint hopes.

Scott Campos also had a productive night, while Chris Widman, Connor King and Chad Wirtzfeld all contributed crucial points.

Warriors also welcomed back Danno Verge following his concussion suspension and he grew into the meeting despite an unfortunate fall in heat nine.

Isle of Wight rivalry will be renewed on the football pitch on Bank Holiday Monday when Newport play hosts to East Cowes Vics in a Wessex League, Division One clash (3pm).

But because of groundsharing this season, there is an ironic twist to match, as Newport will be the ‘home’ team, but will be playing on Vics’ ground at Beatrice Avenue, as they will continue to do so until their proposed new ground is ready.

Graeme takes honours in blustery conditions

Weather fails to dampen spirits at 65th Cowes Bowls tournament The 65th Annual Cowes Open Bowls tournament was officially opened by the Mayor of Cowes Town Council, Councillor Lora Peacey-Wilcox and Chairperson of Northwood House Charitable Trust, Roseleen Cullen.

Throughout the week, despite a mixture of adverse weather conditions, the tournament was successfully concluded, and spectators were treated to some fine bowling in all the competitions.

In the Open Triples the semi-finals resulted in Graham Thorn, Mark Baker and Steve Morris winning 27-7 against Carol and Nick DeNouville and skip Shirley Searle, while Brian Knowles, Mick Lloyd and Bill Pike overcame Brian

Blenkinsop, Darren Griffith and Paul Dickinson 19-16. The final produced some excellent bowling with Brian, Mick and Bill winning 15-13 to take the title.

In the Men’s Pairs semi-finals Darren Griffith and Paul Dickinson beat Derek Stevens and Viv Jenkins 18-12, and John Walker and Barry Bridgeman beat Mike Cox and Ray Blanchard by 22-9. In the final, the combination of Darren and Paul overcame a determined John and Barry 20-17.

The Ladies’ Pairs semi-finals saw Jean Cox and Val Stevens win 26-9 against Ann Jee and Pam Brown, while Margaret Hirst and Anne Boxall beat Carol DeNouville and Shirley Searle 12-11. The

final was unfortunately cut short when Anne Boxall had to retire with Jean and Val winning 9-6.

In the Men’s Singles semi-finals Brian Knowles lost to Darren Griffith 1921 and Paul Dickinson just beat Keith Gosden by one shot 21-20. The final was dominated by Darren who went on to win 21-10.

In the Ladies Singles semi-finals Jean Cox overcame a determined Cat Mason 21-20 and Val Stevens beat Sue HeatonWatts 21-14. The final saw Val take the title with 21-15.

Best performance by a local entry was awarded to Darren Griffith.

Seven Scows started in Yarmouth Sailing Club’s latest series, in blustery conditions. It would have been eight, but Chris Jones missed the start as she was still on her mooring bailing out after the previous night’s rain.

Alan Toms got the best start and held on for a while until Melinda Measor and then Graeme Bowen passed him.

Meanwhile, Niall Wallace was chasing Roger PoerscoutEdgerton, who in turn was chased by John Smith until his halyard slipped. There were several position changes during the race but in the end it was Graeme followed by Melinda then Roger.

Another blustery day saw a small fleet of Scows braving the conditions, two reefed and two with full rigs. The unreefed rigs of Martin Palmer followed by Graeme Bowen led the fleet off the line with reefed Roger Poerscout-Edgerton and Alan Toms right behind them.

Graeme edged ahead of Martin, and Alan ahead of Roger.

With 30 knot gusts hitting the fleet the run was an edgy affair but all survived – just! The unreefed boats slowly lengthened their lead with Martin always close enough to capitalise on any mistake that Graeme made.

But it was Martin who just caught the mud on the exit from Mill Creek which gave Graeme enough room for a comfortable reach into the finish. Behind them Roger and Alan were still in close contest until a gust rounded Roger up and sent him the wrong side of the mark. By the time he had unknitted his error, Alan was cruising home in third.

Richard and Dominic shoot to top and create Island history

Richard Wilson and Dominic Cowen have created history by becoming the first pair of rifle shooters to represent England from the same Isle of Wight Club.

Richard and Dominic are members of Shanklin Rifle and Pistol Club, and travelled to Bisley in Surrey for the week-long British Long Range Small Ball Rifle Championships, that culminated in both being picked to represent England in a Home Countries International tournament against Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, that followed the Championships.

It was a first England cap for Dominic, and it proved a real achievement as he and Richard were able to celebrate in style after winning the title for their country, following the two medals he won at the Island Games, held recently in Gibraltar.

Richard said: “We both had to shoot solidly throughout the week to record a combined aggregate. I finished sixth overall and Dominic was eighth, just two points behind

me. We had to shoot in all conditions, including a howling gale one day, as well as hot sunshine and rain.”

Around 500 shooters took part overall, with Richard, from Newport, and Dominic from Cowes, in the X Class Elite group,

which comprised around 100 competitors.

Their overall placings throughout the week were good enough to secure their places in the England team, and they then capitalised by seeing off the opposition from the other three Home countries.

for 17 years before going on to compete at the British Nationals in Glasgow, and then at the English Nationals in Sheffield where he won silver in the 50 freestyle, only 0.07 seconds from gold, and bronze in the 50m butterfly, recording Personal Bests in all four of his races.

Soon he will be off to Guildford and High Wycombe. But inevitably, his swim career takes huge commitment from both him and all of his family, both time-wise and financially and would welcome a discussion with any companies who would consider some sort of corporate sponsorship.

Joe’s efforts in pool earn him Swim England spot Isle of Wight teenager Joe Carter is making a real splash in the pool. Now the Ryde youngster’s efforts have been rewarded this week when he learned he has been selected

by Swim England to participate in the National Development Programme, part of the Swim England Talent Pathway towards International podium success. Training for this will be held at Guildford and High Wycombe.

It caps a fine summer for the 14-year-old who attends Ryde Academy, and will be in Year 10 when he starts back next month. Joe, who has lived in Ryde all of his life, started having swimming lessons aged three, and progressed to squads with Ryde Swimming Club when just 10, and began competing a year later.

He quickly gained experience and started winning many medals in competitions, rising up the rankings and qualifying for his first Hampshire County finals aged 12. He continued his winning streak and broke into

the top 10 ranked swimmers in Hampshire, which qualified him for the Isle of Wight’s Talented Athlete Scheme.

Joe subsequently stepped up his training at Seaclose Swimming Club and Ryde Swimming Club, and then joined West Wight as well, so he was attending training at all three clubs.

In January, he swam in a 50m freestyle race in Brighton and recorded the fastest time in the UK for his age - 13 years old - in 25.3 seconds, which qualified him to train with the IW Island Games Swim Team with his older brother Jack.

Joe became Hampshire County Champion in several events and also qualified for The South East Regionals where he gained times to compete at both the British finals in Glasgow and English National finals in Sheffield later in the year.
