Cabinet votes in fire changes The Isle of Wight Council’s cabinet has approved plans to change the Island’s fire service, despite Fire Brigade Union and scrutiny committee concerns over safety and job losses. The Island’s Fire Brigade Union secretary Spence Cave said the plans were likely financially motivated and could result in the loss of eight jobs. His comments came after a scrutiny committee meeting on Tuesday (October 9) in which members voted to defer the plans amid safety concerns.
Mr Cave explained his concerns were not just about the proposed shift changes, but about ensuring appliances had a safe amount of riders and keeping island jobs. Councillor Tig Outlaw (Lake North), cabinet member for public safety, delivered a presentation to the scrutiny committee ahead of the cabinet meeting outlining shift pattern changes and a possibility of fire engines being crewed with four riders. The now approved plans ensure more firefighters work on evenings and weekends and 12 firefighters are available for 12 hours a day, everyday.
