From the way the councillors behave right through to the whole fracas of the sale and then selling it to someone else and we’ve had a court case, that’s cost the ratepayers over £30,000. The councillors have just totally ignored all the advice. It’s unbelievable, totally unbelievable.

Dee Fox - Bembridge I think all these rows are a really big shame. We have everything here in Bembridge and the fishmongers is such a big thing as you can see. Every week I come in here and get locally caught fish. It’s such a big part of the community and it brings everybody together.

Ann - Bembridge (no photo) I think the facilities ought to stay in the village, the asset ought to belong to the village. It would be a shame to have to go elsewhere for the fishmongers, it’s a great shop. There’s just been such a big dispute over it, it has cost the council a fortune. It’s ridiculous, they should have looked at it properly and listened. They had a vote on it and nobody took any notice.

Mr Hopper beat Margaret Donlon in a ballot of members.

Fierce rows that are splitting Bembridge Parish Council members continued to escalate yesterday as one of the tenants of 5/7 High Street, the property at the centre of the heated controversy, moved out of the building.

Following the revelation last week that the Parish Council squandered almost £32,000 in legal fees in a botched attempt to sell the building, there are claims that further public money is being wasted on eviction proceedings against Peter Burke, even though he had already told the Council he was moving out.

With a court date set for April 30 it is also alleged that proper procedures were not followed in making the decision to launch the action against Mr. Burke, who attempted to purchase the building during a bungled sale process.

The Council incurred a bill of £31,617 when they eventually backed down in the face of a potential judicial review launched by Mr. Burke, after he made an offer to buy, but the Council accepted a lower offer. The 1972 Local Government Act says that community-owned assets must be sold for the best price that can be obtained. A majority of the Council have voted against an independent investigation of the sale, on the

grounds that some of the members still wish to sell it.

The scandal-hit Council was driven into two deeply divided factions following the local government elections in May, 2017 when 10 candidates stood for the ‘Open Bembridge’ group pledging to prevent the sale of 5/7 High Street, which at the time housed three long term tenants.

After being elected, five of the group changed their position and have since voted consistently to sell the building.

Bembridge residents appear to be opposed to the plans, with a petition in January, 2017, signed by around 1,300 people and a parish poll held in June last year coming out almost three to one against the sale.

Speaking exclusively to the Isle of Wight Observer yesterday Mr Burke said: “For 10 years I have always paid my rent in full and on time, and I never had any problems with previous Councils. Despite publicly promising last year that I would be offered a new lease, it seems that some members of the Council are now engaged in a personal vendetta against me and the other remaining tenant Captain Stan’s Fish Shop, because we spoke up for parish residents who do not want the building sold.

“It is widely believed that their over-riding objective is to sell this lovely building for redevelopment.

Why else would they have turned down my offer in favour of a lower one from a builder and got rid of two of the three long-standing tenants? Captain Stan’s Fish Shop has a protected tenancy within the building, which they can’t simply terminate, but they are jeopardising the business by putting the outside areas needed, in order to carry on trading, on a licence that can be terminated with only eight weeks’ notice.

“The main reason they have given for wanting to sell is that they are unable to afford the upkeep of the building, yet they have squandered over £30,000 in legal fees and refused my offers of a 30 per cent increase in rent and to carry out certain repairs at my own expense. They are now losing income as the office will now sit empty, and they have launched an unnecessary legal action against me, despite my telling them long ago that I would comply with their eviction notice. They are in charge of public money, it’s not a personal piggybank that certain councillors seem to be able to dip into at will to fund their personal prejudices and campaigns.”

Laser attack Peter Burke’s office pictured before and after the move Alastair Steane, a Bembridge Parish Councillor, says he is unable to effectively represent the people in his ward, because he has been summarily banned from contacting the parish clerk, or even entering the council offices because he disagrees with the views of the majority group.

He said: “As an elected Councillor I am totally unaware of any decision taken by the Council for court action to evict Mr, Burke from 5/7 High Street. I know that some other Councillors are in the same position.

It would appear that there is a group of Councillors making inappropriate decisions that contravene the rules governing local decision making.

“As far as I am concerned those that made the decision should be personally financially liable for any costs resulting from this, and I will be pursuing this. I believe that there are other legal challenges against the Council that will come to light in the near future. Enough is enough.”

Bembridge Parish Council were approached for a comment on the allegations on Wednesday morning but at the time of going to press (10pm on Thursday evening) no response had been received.

A man who shone a laser at a Police helicopter while it was searching for a missing person in Brading was later found to be in possession of an air rifle. Police had been looking for a man with learning difficulties, but while the search was ongoing, the helicopter was subjected to a laser attack. The crew identified where the laser beam had been discharged, and saw a male holding what appeared to be a weapon.

Wightlink annual maintenance Wightlink’s annual maintenance and refit programme will continue until Thursday, April 11, after teams identified ‘unforeseen maintenance works’ on board one of their FastCats.

Wightlink apologised for any changes to customers travel plans.

‘Beware holiday scammers’ warning goes out on Island

Visit Isle of Wight and an Island bed and breakfast owner are warning accommodation providers to be aware of a scam, which could cost small businesses thousands.

Shona McMillan, of Koala Cottage in Godshill, received an email from someone claiming to be from France, asking to book accommodation for a month. The scammer promised to send money to cover the full amount by cheque, as they were unable to do a bank transfer.

The scammer then contacted Shona again, saying they could only stay for a shorter time and asked the Bed and Breakfast owner to refund the difference immediately.

If the scam had been successful, the cheque from the scammer would not have cleared, Shona would have lost the money requested by the scammer and potentially lost out on guests turned away for the time period originally

booked.

The owner of Koala Cottage spotted the scam almost immediately, and is now warning other Island businesses that they might be targeted in the run up to Easter and summer on the Isle of Wight.

Shona McMillan said: "At Koala Cottage, it’s just three luxury suites that we provide, so blocking out someone for a one month period, even in the winter season, is a third of my business blocked off to that one scam guest, so it has a huge impact on any small business.’

Shona had this warning for her fellow business owners on the Island: "I have heard of people losing a lot of money from this, and I think it’s really important for other bed and breakfast owners, hoteliers and self-catering accommodation owners to be aware of this, because it is too good to be true.

check carefully."

Visit Isle of Wight is urging businesses to be vigilant. Amanda Coleman, Wight BID administration officer said: "Just be really careful, double check everything, don’t give out any details and report anything that you think is untoward, because there are so many out there."

Isle of Wight Council’s Trading Standards team manager, Julie Woodhouse, said: "We ask Island businesses to be vigilant with scams like this and to get in touch with us. If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Another warning sign is that you have to make a quick decision.

Scammers don’t like to give you time to think."

Island could be shining wildlife example

Caroline Underwood has exhibition at Quay Arts Every two years, Quay Arts invites emerging and established artists from across the UK to submit works in any medium to be a part of an Open Exhibition, awarding one artist the opportunity to present their work in a future solo exhibition at Quay Arts.

It is through open exhibitions that Quay Arts can discover new talent and provide a platform for visual artists that wish to share their work with the world.

The 2017 Open Exhibition titled and themed, 'I must down to the seas again', borrowed from John Masefield’s original 1902 Sea Fever poem, saw over 100 submissions from artists across the Isle of Wight and beyond, with 64 individual sea and marine inspired works work by 52 artists accepted. Included in the selection and winning the prize was Islandbased artist Caroline Underwood, with her

two large-scale paintings: 'Island West: Compton' and 'Island East: Bembridge'.

Initially inspired by her experience of taking part in the Island’s Hospice fundraising event, ‘Walk the Wight’, and the 2017 exhibition

by British land artist, Richard Long, at Quay Arts, the works were made through exploring the Island on foot in all directions from her studio based in Carisbrooke.

Now, Caroline presents Bearings, an exhibition exploring her connection with the Island’s land and seascapes.

The exhibition opens in the West Gallery, Quay Arts, on Saturday, April 27, and continues until Saturday, June 29. Caroline will also provide a free Walk and Talk gallery tour of her new exhibition on Saturday, May 18, starting at 11am in the West Gallery.

Pupil seen on roof The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and Police were called to a school in Newport after a pupil climbed onto the roof. The incident occurred at the Island Learning Centre on Albany Road. A firefighter used a

short extension ladder to climb onto the roof and engage with the teen, who was persuaded to leave the roof thanks to the efforts of firefighters, Police and teaching staff.

Wildlife experts, landowners and other interested people have come together in Newport to debate how wild the Island should be.

The ‘Wilder Wight’ event was organised

by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, with support from the Environment Agency and included guest speakers Sir Charles Burrell, from the Knepp Estate in Sussex, and Derek Gow, national expert on species re-introduction. The speakers were also joined by panellists from a range of local and national organisations.

Debbie Tann, Chief Executive of Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, said: “We’ve all heard the news reports of dramatic wildlife declines. But this isn’t just happening in far-flung places, we are losing species right here on our doorstep.

"While the Island often fares better than other parts of the country, it is not immune to the impacts of industry, intensive

agriculture, development and climate change. We urgently need to put nature into recovery. The Island could and should be a shining example of how nature can flourish and bounce back on a grand scale, given the space and support to do so.”

Cowes Men’s Shed awarded funding Cowes Men's Shed has been awarded £95,129 from the National Lottery Community Fund to support the Shed over the next two years.

Cowes Men’s Shed is the only one operating in the Cowes area. It targets social isolation and improving members' lives by enabling them to build new friendships. Its allinclusive policy and free membership makes the Shed very accessible, as does its long opening hours.

The Cowes Men's Shed has a carpentry workshop and horticultural areas, and is perfect for people who have downsized and no longer have gardens or workshops and for those who would prefer a bit of company whilst enjoying their hobbies.

Adam Martin, Cowes Men’s Shed Project Leader, said “One in six households on the Island include a person aged 65 or over living alone. This money will help us to continue bringing people together, enriching lives and putting smiles on faces. This grant has been made possible by the support of the National Lottery players; thank you everyone”.

Cowes Men's Shed is a member of the UK Men's Sheds Association (UKMSA) and offers

free membership to everyone aged 18+. It is open Monday to Friday, 10am to 3pm and has a project leader, Adam, on hand during opening hours. New president for Girlguiding IW Patricia Partridge has left the post as President of Girlguiding IW after around 15 years.

Patricia has moved to the mainland and together with her husband John, they will be nearer their family.

She has been President for three terms of Island Commissioners.

Agreeing to become the President when asked to do so by the then Island Commissioner, Deborah Meadows, Patricia continued when Janet Lovell became Island Commissioner, at the time when Girlguiding was celebrating 100 years. Following the joint appointment of Shirley Saunders and Lesley Clifford as Island Commissioners in 2014, Patricia continued her role as President until recently.

Although Patricia had moved to her new home, she returned to the Island recently and following the most recent meeting of Girlguiding IW’s Executive Committee, a presentation of a hamper containing IW produce and an IW glass piece was made by Shirley and Lesley.

Welcoming Girlguiding IW’s new President, Gioia Minghella-Giddens, Patricia and the Island Commissioners said they hoped

Gioia would enjoy her experience within Girlguiding. Having been a Brownie in Ryde, it was felt that Gioia was the ideal choice for the post and Shirley Saunders presented Gioia with her President’s Badge.

Gioia said:“I am thrilled to follow Patricia, who will be a hard act to follow. I have always had a great admiration and respect for Girlguiding. I just want to get stuck in. I’m honoured to accept the role of President.”

As a last duty Patricia presented Lesley and Shirley with Island Awards which are presented to members who have undertaken extra service to Girlguiding on the Island.

Island’s Higher Education discussed at Conference

More than 120 young people, experts and industry leaders gathered in Cowes to discuss the Island’s higher education at the 2019 Youth Conference. The event follows on from the successful youth conference last year.

Isle of Wight Council is gathering the views and ideas of young Islanders to take forward and help direct the future of higher education on the Island.

The Council is leading a local steering group to focus on improving access and provision of top-quality higher education, including degrees and equivalent qualifications.

Students from schools and colleges were invited to hear presentations before joining in with an interactive exercise to design, market and brand a possible Isle of Wight Higher Education Campus. Education providers, including the University of Southampton,

University of Portsmouth, Isle of Wight College, Platform One, UKSA and HTP Apprenticeship College, were there to show students some of the many ways to follow a degree-level course without moving to the mainland.

Degree-standard education on the Isle of Wight is already a growing part of the Island’s education sector.

Students are following a range of post A-level education courses on the Island, while local universities have a strong presence.

Delegates heard inspiring stories from people who had gained an education on or off the Island and used it to succeed in business and public service here. There was even a song from local musician and Strings Bar and Venue proprietor, Claydon Connor, who explained how he had come from studying at Platform One College of Music to be owner of the

popular Newport performance space.

Kyle Clinch, a student from Ryde Academy Sixth Form, said: “It was eye opening to see the opportunities we already have on the Island. I wasn’t aware of all the things you could go on to do after a typical education here.”

Cllr. Paul Brading, Cabinet member for Children's Services, Education and Skills, said: “I was delighted to launch the conference and see the overwhelmingly positive response from the young people there. We’re certainly going to be taking on board the many ideas and concepts that came forward at the event, and I have no doubt that some of the people in that room could be the future leaders of businesses and organisations on the Island that would make those plans into a reality.”

Island parents top table for school absentee fines It has been revealed that the Isle of Wight is top of the table for the proportion of parents being fined for unauthorised school absences. In the 2017/18 academic year, parents of 135 per 1,000 pupils received such a fine.

This marks a staggering rise of 110 per cent, compared with the previous year’s figure of 64 per one thousand.

Altogether, a total of 2,015 fines were handed out across the Island, with the parents of around one in every seven children being fined. The IW Council say that money from penalty notices is used to cover the costs of administering and enforcing the fines scheme.

In September 2013, the Government

changed the law so headteachers could only grant absences in what they regarded as ‘exceptional circumstances’. On the Isle of Wight, parents are fined if their children fail to attend ten sessions over the course of an academic year. Those who fail to make sure their children attend regularly can be fined £60.

Isle of Wight business owner, Jon Platt, who, in a case that was taken all the way to the Supreme Court, was fined after taking his daughter on holiday to Florida during term time, claimed not to be surprised by the spike.

Following his high-profile court case, local authorities had become stricter

enforcing fines against parents. In his opinion, the Isle of Wight has some of the most draconian interpretations of the law. Mr Platt has now put all his children into private education, thereby avoiding further fines from the council.

The National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) believe children should miss as little time at school as possible, but that the current system of fines was "clearly too blunt an instrument", which "drives a wedge between schools and families". The association believes the real problem is holiday prices, which they believe puts families "between a rock and a hard place".

News in brief Car hits lights A car ploughed head on into a set of traffic lights at a pelican crossing at Furrlongs in Pan Estate, Newport, where the entrance to the estate meets St George’s Way, at around 10am on Sunday morning.

No other vehicles are believed to have been involved in the collision.

Car rollover in Brading The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service attended a vehicle rollover on Rowborough Lane, Brading, on Monday morning when a Renault hatchback came to a halt, upside down on its roof.

The driver was initially feared trapped, but was able to free himself from the wreckage with the assistance of other motorists.

It is understood that the vehicle had been involved in a collision with a grass cutter.

Car down bank Drivers were left feeling perplexed on Monday evening after seeing a blue Suzuki Wagon stuck down an embankment off St Mary’s Roundabout in Newport. The car sustained significant front end damage in the crash, which occurred shortly before 5:30pm. It is unclear exactly how the incident occurred.

Ferries cancelled Wightlink scrubbed four ferry crossings on their Yarmouth to Lymington route on Monday because of a mechanical issue with an essential piece of equipment. The 7.45am and 10am crossings from Lymington and the 8.50am and 11.05am from Yarmouth were all cancelled.

There’s bin a hold-up!

There was heavy traffic reported coming into Newport via Fairlee on Wednesday morning, with queues stretching as far as Whippingham’s Racecourse Roundabout.

Southern Vectis also reported delays to its routes 5 and 9. The traffic hold ups are believed to have been caused by the bin collections taking place.

Wine warehouse could be closed

A wine warehouse in Wootton is at risk of closing its doors, after the company announced plans to close stores and concentrate on on-line sales. Majestic Wine has announced plans to revamp its business by closing some of its under performing stores across the UK, concentrating on its online Naked Wines. The change will also see the company being renamed Naked Wines to match the new business direction.

Further details of the store closures and any job losses will be given in June.

School budget cuts Cowes Enterprise College dubbed ‘intolerable cutting-edge curriculum situation’ A School Cuts coalition analysis of the latest Government school funding figures for the Isle of Wight shows a shortfall in funding of £11.5 million between 2015 and 2019, with 42 out of 45 Island schools affected. That is over 93 per cent of Island schools, compared with 91 per cent of schools in England.

Peter Shreeve, Isle of Wight NEU Joint Secretary, said: “This is an intolerable situation. Children and young people are being short-changed by a Government that believes their education can be run on a shoe-string budget.

“As a result of Government’s absolute refusal to accept the fact that a school funding crisis exists, school class sizes are increasing, teachers and support staff are being reduced, building repairs are being left undone, subjects are being dropped from the curriculum and teachers are continuing to subsidise out of their own pocket for items such as text books and glues sticks.

“A lack of funding is impacting on all schools, irrelevant of size. All Saints primary in Freshwater has missed out on £95,671 and is in danger of closure. Figures indicate a loss of over £1 million in some larger secondaries.

“This situation cannot go on. There needs to be a reversal of cuts to school budgets since 2010, and for the funding of schools and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) provision to be of a level that ensures all children and young people get the education they deserve, regardless of where they live.”

Ormiston Academies Trust, which runs 38 schools in England, including Cowes Enterprise College, has been awarded almost £97,000 to develop and deliver a maritime economy curriculum project to help meet skills gaps in the industry.

It will work with Cowes Enterprise College, sector employers and further education providers to build a vocational curriculum for pupils. Cowes Enterprise College, rated ‘Good’

by Ofsted, is ranked by the Department for Education as the top-performing secondary school on the Isle of Wight for GCSE results in the headline Progress 8 measure.

The curriculum will blend theory in the classroom, embedded in key curriculum subjects, with practical learning linked to the maritime industry. It will develop pupils’ practical skills, while enabling them to access education and employment on the island and further afield.

The curriculum will include boat-building, including design and specifications; navigation electronics; celestial navigation; tides; admiralty chart conventions; shipping forecasts; practical boat-handling skills;

and attending Cowes Regatta, to celebrate the production of boats. The Maritime Skills Alliance and CECAMM, part of the Isle of Wight College, are among the partners who will support on curriculum development.

Nick Hudson, Chief Executive Officer of Ormiston Academies Trust, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this funding.

This work will address the skills needs of the maritime industry, whilst ensuring young people at Cowes Enterprise College are provided with the knowledge and skills needed for the maritime sector.”

Rachel Kitley, Principal of Cowes Enterprise College, said: “This is an exciting project for Cowes Enterprise College, and we look forward to developing and then delivering a high-quality vocational curriculum that integrates practical learning with the regional economy.

“We will work in close partnership with local employers and further education providers to ensure we are providing our pupils with not only a breadth of choice at 14, but the kind of skills that will last for a lifetime.”

St Catherine’s rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted St Catherine’s School, Ventnor, is celebrating its latest Ofsted residential care report, which highly praised its work with children and young people from the Island and across the UK, all of whom have severe and lifelong speech, language and communication needs and associated conditions such as: autistic spectrum disorders, occupational therapy needs, developmental delay, dyslexia and dyspraxia.

Following a three-day Ofsted inspection in February, the school, which supports day and residential students aged seven to 19 years, as well as having a provision for post19 students, was judged to be outstanding for the fourth year in a row.

The inspection said: “Residential students make excellent progress in all aspects of their lives while staying at the school.

Leaders and managers have exceptionally high expectations for all students in the

school. They strive for students to achieve beyond expectations and will consistently look for new ways to improve the experience for students across the school. The head of care and dedicated care staff team are consistently seeking to improve outcomes for students and to support them to develop their independence skills and broaden their experiences”.

Mrs. Rachel Weldon, Principal of St Catherine’s, said: “We are delighted that Ofsted have judged our residential provision to be Outstanding for the fourth consecutive year. It is a great testament to the excellent teamwork by our dedicated staff and trustees, who I would like to thank for their continued commitment. We must also say a big thank you to our wonderful students, who, despite their difficulties, give of their best on a daily basis.”

Have your say on cancer support Wessex Cancer Trust, a charity dedicated to providing free and local emotional and practical support for anyone living with cancer, has launched a major piece of research, in partnership with Bournemouth University, to find out what local people need most in terms of cancer support.

The results will put the views and experiences of patients, carers and healthcare professionals at the heart of shaping cancer support services on the Isle of Wight and in Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire.

Experts will survey hundreds of local people, aged between 10 and 100, who have any type of cancer at any stage, as well as families and friends affected by cancer and major stakeholders including local hospitals, local authorities, other charities and hospices.

Bournemouth University researchers will then analyse the responses to help Wessex Cancer Trust build up an accurate picture of need and make sure local people receive the best possible support from the charity.

Launching the survey, Wessex Cancer Trust’s CEO, Cait Allen, said: “As a regional charity, we have the flexibility and freedom to tailor our services to our own unique populations, and that's how we've been able to provide very specific and relevant support to people affected by cancer in our local area. We're committed to evolution and innovation, and this new research will help us develop our services to directly address local need."

The TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards for Destinations recognise the locations that are the most popular among TripAdvisor reviewers, based on millions of reviews and opinions. Award winners were determined using a algorithm based on reviews and ratings for hotels, restaurants and experiences in destinations worldwide over a 12-month period.

London was placed at number one, not just for the UK but for the rest of the world, with Trip Advisor experts commenting that the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will have had a large impact.

Susie take over role of Queens’ Island rep

Steve Bavington, who sustained a catastrophic spinal injury while playing rugby in the Army 30 years ago, is taking part in the 2019 100km Randonnee cycle around the Isle of Wight, using his new Hybrid Assisted Hand Bike provided by the RFU's Injured Players Foundation.

Steve, his wife Lorna, and a teams of friends are taking on the randonnee to help Steve and in support of the

Foundation The event takes place on Sunday, May 5, and the team are looking to raise as much money as they possibly can for the RFU IPF, so the charity can continue to provide grants to help change the lives of injured players like Steve and his family. The Isle of Wight has a new Lord Lieutenant.

Susie Sheldon, a former High Sheriff of the Island, stepped into the role when outgoing Lord Lieutenant, Major General Sir Martin White reached his 75th birthday on Monday.

Susie says she is relishing the challenge of the prestigious role, but accepts Sir Martin, who was Lord Lieutenant for 13 years, will be a difficult act to follow. She said: “There was no official ceremony. Martin stopped on his 75th birthday, and the following day I started. That’s all there was to it, apart from a letter from the Queen!”

One of the Lord Lieutenant’s key roles is to be the Queen’s representative for the Isle of Wight, and oversee Royal visits here.

Susie continued: “Martin was amazing. He did 13 years; he knows everybody, and is a very wise man. He has been great to me in the handover, briefing me in the last few months, and has been of huge support.

“His are big shoes to step into. It is very exciting, and a huge honour, but I have an awful lot to learn, particularly on the military side, which is an important part of the role.”

She continued: “The Island is a great place with a lot going on, and obviously I will meet some amazing people, and I have 15 years to get to know the Island well. Certainly during the first year it will be a learning curve and feeling my way into the role.”

There is no uniform for a lady who is Lord

Emergency services attended a road traffic collision at Whippingham on the main road in and out of East Cowes on Tuesday afternoon after a cyclist was injured as a result of a collision with a vehicle. The incident occurred near the junction with Beatrice Avenue outside Priory School.

Car fire in Lake Firefighters from Shanklin tackled a car fire in Lake on Tuesday lunchtime when a Citroen C5 saloon caught fire outside The Stag Inn pub on Newport Road.

No-one is thought to have been injured in the incident and the fire did not spread to any buildings. It is thought that an electrical fault may have sparked the blaze.

Police swoop in Brading A large number of Police officers, including armed Police and the National Police Air Service helicopter, descended on Brading on Tuesday evening at around 8.30pm. A male was later located at Yaverland beach and taken away in an unmarked Police car. Officers were tightlipped about what exactly has prompted the largescale response. However, despite concerns from Brading residents, there was not thought to have been any risk to the community.

Drivers were left feeling perplexed on Monday evening after seeing a blue Suzuki Wagon stuck down an embankment off St Mary’s Roundabout in Newport. The car sustained significant front end damage in the crash, which occurred shortly before 5:30pm. It is unclear exactly how the incident occurred.

Funding for One Life

An Isle of Wight music festival, specifically set-up for those with disabilities and special educational needs, will continue to expand, thanks to additional funding from the National Lottery.

The One Life Festival, hosted at Tapnell Farm, has received backing, so the event can run for two days instead of its previous one.

According to one of the organisers, Paul Elvins, the 2018 One Life Festival was a ‘phenomenal success’.

He said: “Our expectations were truly shattered. The feedback was to expand the festival to be bigger and better than before. We had people rock climbing, skateboarding and dancing at the front of the stage. Some of their support workers said that they were generally quite withdrawn and didn’t engage much.

“This year, both days will be different. We hope to create an understanding space. We want it to be a more mainstream festival with a bar. Something like the Isle of Wight Festival is far too big and overwhelming for some with learning difficulties. We would like these young people to have an experience that often is not readily available to them.”

Alice launches pooch picture service Award winning local photographer Alice Armfield, 21, from Cowes, is setting up a new business: bespoke dog portraits.

Alice graduated from the University of Portsmouth’s photography department last July. She says that she has always enjoyed photographing family pets, loves dogs, and has amassed a portfolio of pictures of dogs in their home environments.

Alice was the Student Photographer of the Year in 2015, and her work has been published in Source magazine, a showcase of the best student work from around the country. In her final year of college, she travelled to Mexico taking pictures.

Her work has been featured in an exhibition called Comfort Zone at Dimbola Lodge in Freshwater, as well as at the Menier Gallery in London.

Alice said: “I just love doing it. I had some spare time and decided to combine my two passions.”

News in brief Ryde power cut A low voltage electrical fault caused a power cut to around 55 properties in St John’s Road, Ryde and The Green, St Helens.

The fault resulted in contractors having to set up thre-way temporary traffic lights on St John’s Road in Ryde to repair an underground issue, causing the temporary isolation of power supplies.

Shed thefts A number of sheds and garages have been targeted by person(s) unknown and tools taken in West Wight. Residents are encouraged to take necessary steps to protect their belongings, as in some incidents the items have been stolen from unsecured outbuildings.

Ryde Spring clean The Respect Ryde Project will be hosting a Spring seafront and beach clean on March 30. Those interested in participating should assemble at Appley Beach Café at 1pm.

Road collision The Royal British Legion are currently searching for veterans who served in Italy during WWII to join them on a free-of-charge tour to Monte Cassino, Anzio and Salerno.

Veterans from World War II, who fought in the Italian campaign, are being invited by the travel arm of the Royal British Legion to take part in special 75th anniversary journeys of remembrance.

Those who fought in Italy can opt for a tour to either Monte Cassino and Salerno or Monte Cassino and Anzio.A special tour to the National Memorial Arboretum is also on offer

for those unable to travel overseas.

The Treasury is enabling these freeof-charge tours, which are funded

by LIBOR fines, and will enable a WWII veteran to return with a family member and carer.

Nichola Rowlands-Smith, Head of Travel, Royal British Legion, said: "The Italian campaign seems to be less well-known in the nation's history than other battles such as D Day, yet it was another pivotal turning point in bringing to an end World War II. "We have a wonderful opportunity to take back those who fought, for

them to pay their respects to fallen comrades, meet fellow veterans and lay old ghosts to rest."

The five-day Italian-based tours will include a service of remembrance at the Cassino War Cemetery plus visits to Anzio War Cemetery, Salerno Commonwealth War Cemetery and the Beach Head War Cemetery. The tour will also take in significant battle sites, such as the Monte Cassino Abbey as well as visits to local tourist locations.

Medina Marching Band to play at Lord Mayor’s show The Medina Marching Band has been asked to play at one of the country’s most prestigious events, the Lord Mayor’s Show in London, in November.

The Lord Mayor’s Show dates back to the 16th century. It’s a street parade combining traditional British Pageantry with elements of carnival. There is a new Lord Mayor every year, and the public parade marks their inauguration ceremony.

The procession starts from the Guildhall, then proceeds via Mansion House and St Paul’s Cathedral to the Royal Courts of Justice on the edge of the City of Westminster, where the new Lord Mayor swears his oath of allegiance.

Some of the world’s best military bands will

also be participating in the parade, such as HM Royal Marines, the Royal Air Force, the Guards Division, and the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment Band. The show will be broadcast live on the BBC. Band members will have to dip into their pockets to pay for the trip themselves, but hope Island businesses will step in to support their fundraising efforts.

Chairman of Medina Marching Band, Kevin Hayward, said: “It is an honour to be picked to represent the Isle of Wight. My youngest player is six and my oldest is 74. The 74-yearold only joined us three years ago, but will be playing in London. He’s a real character. We do it for the honour and for the Isle of Wight.

We don’t receive any payment for it.”

St Georges Park hotel in Burtonupon-Trent. The tour will include a service of remembrance as well as visits to Cannock Chase Cemetery and Staffordshire Regiment Museum.

The Royal British Legion has been running LIBOR funded tours for the past five years. The tours are now available for all veterans who served in World War II and this year will be running journeys of remembrance to Normandy, Berlin, Holland and Italy.

Emergency services attended a head-on collision between a car and a pick-up on Carpenters Road, between Brading and St Helens, at around 10pm on Friday night, in which a woman found herself trapped in a VW Polo. No one is thought to have sustained any life-threatening injuries in the collision.

Pupil seen on school roof The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and Police were called to a school in Newport after a pupil climbed onto the roof.

The incident occurred at the Island Learning Centre on Albany Road.

A firefighter used a short extension ladder to climb onto the roof and engage with the teen, who was persuaded to leave the roof thanks to the efforts of firefighters, Police and teaching staff.

Round the Island in 80 days...!

Sailors from around the world have only 80 days left to enter the famous Round the Island Race, that will see 1,500 boats sail around the Isle of Wight on Saturday, June 29.

The race received a record number of entries within the first 24 hours and is popular with families, first time racers and professional sailors alike.

The race starts and finishes in Cowes, with the leading competitors normally taking under four hours to complete the course, depending on weather conditions.

During the race, spectators watching from the shore and from around the world will be able to follow the progress via the race tracking service on the official website, provided courtesy of Raymarine, the Official Race Tracking Partner. The website will also feature a live blog, bringing all of the latest news and breathtaking views from around the Isle of Wight as they happen.

The Round the Island Race will be supporting The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust as its official race charity, which raises funds to help young people rebuild their lives after cancer treatment. The Round the Island Race is being sponsored by Helly Hansen, Raymarine, MS Amlin and Chelsea Magazines.

Commodore of the Island Sailing Club, David Atkinson said: “We are proud to have received a record number of entries into the Round the Island Race within 24 hours of entries first opening, and we hope that more families and first-time sailors are inspired to sign up in the remaining 80 days until entries close.”

Shadow helping Libby live a normal life again

In a first for Island Charity Ability Dogs 4 Young People, Shadow, a 22-month-old female, black Labrador, has started working as a Diabetic Alert Ability Dog. She is helping Libby, a 14-year-old, who has Type 1 Diabetes. In addition to the usual advanced training undertaken by working Ability Dogs, the charity has been working with the Paediatric Diabetes Team at St. Mary’s Hospital to understand how a Diabetic Alert Ability Dog can help. Shadow’s natural responsiveness enabled her to learn quickly, and she is already detecting Libby’s changing levels and letting her know.

She alerts Libby to changing levels in her insulin, any time, day or night. During the day, she picks up Libby’s ‘kit bag’ and circles around her until she takes the required action. At night, a more vulnerable time, Shadow will be taught to push a button which will send a text to alert Libby’s mum and dad.

Libby, who loves sports. will be able to partake in more physical activities and have the confidence to go out more, knowing that Shadow is watching over her. Shadow helps with more than Libby though. Libby’s brother has autism, so he rarely wanted to leave the house. Having Shadow around has meant that he has wanted to join the family taking Shadow for a walk to the local park.

His confidence has grown immensely too.

Libby’s mother, Kim, said: “Libby’s life changed three years ago when she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. She seemed to lose confidence in herself and felt different from her friends. Although she is excellent at controlling her sugar levels, there are times when hypos occur, and she hasn’t realised

her levels have dropped, and at times she feels embarrassed and scared. Shadow is now beginning to detect the change in Libby’s levels and is alerting her, so she is aware to check her sugars. Since being with Shadow, Libby’s confidence and self-esteem is growing. I would like to thank Carol and her team for matching Libby with Shadow, and their help and on-going support have made such a huge difference to Libby and our family.”

Libby said: “Shadow has already made a huge difference to my life, she has given me a lot more confidence. I never used to like going out or to my diabetes appointments, but now I enjoy going out and I don’t mind going to my check-ups as I have Shadow with me. When I am older, I would love to work with dogs like Shadow to help children with type 1 diabetes.

Carol Court, Founder and CEO of Ability Dogs 4 Young People, said: “It has been an incredible experience working with the team at St. Mary’s and seeing just how much help Shadow can provide. Libby and Shadow have grown very close, and it is heartening to see that Shadow is benefitting the whole family too.”

Ability Dogs 4 Young People IoW is an Island charity which trains assistance dogs to improve the lives of physically and mentally disabled young people and children.

New Chairman for Visit Isle of Wight

An Isle of Wight man who heads up a tourism marketing company, specialising in promoting tropical island paradises, has been appointed as the new Chairman of Visit Isle of Wight. Ian Griffiths, of Alverstone Garden Village, took the helm of the Island’s destination management organisation, following a unanimous resolution of the Visit Isle of Wight Board.

Ian lived on the Isle of Wight as a teenager, working in hotels during summer holidays, before moving off and setting up Ocean Marketing, specialists in promoting island destinations in the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific. Now Ian is back living full time on the Island, he says he looks forward to taking on the role of Chairman, left vacant following the retirement of Simon Dabell last year.

He said: “When the BID system was introduced three years ago, I thought ‘actually I want to be on the Board’, but as a non-tourism [business] or BID payer, I wasn’t eligible. Moving forward a couple of years and I saw the Chairman’s position, I thought, ‘I could do that’. I was taken aback firstly when I got the interview and then taken aback when I got it (the job), but I’m so excited.”

Ian says that he is particularly keen to engage with Wight BID levy payers and tourism businesses, to help them make the most of the opportunities that are available to them.”

He continued: “I definitely want to strengthen that relationship (with Wight BID levy payers). Some people don’t like the BID, but I think it’s a fantastic opportunity to engage in the marketing, personally. Working with them to help them understand that and to help us understand why they don’t like it. No one wants to pay more money, but I think it’s an affordable way of promoting the destination.”

The role of Chairman is to oversee the work of the organisation and to help promote the work that it does, and Ian says he is looking forward to working with the team at Visit Isle of Wight.

Ian added: “I’m nose in, fingers out. It’s about going in, working with the team but not doing it, that’s not my role.’

Launch of Action 4 Support celebrated The launch of Action 4 Support (A4S), a community interest company incorporated, is to be celebrated at Dimbola Lodge, Freshwater. A4S is a not-for-profit company, which aims to strengthen the local community through different community projects.

The West Wight Timebank, which has now been running for three-and-a-half years, was the first to come under the A4S legal structure, made possible through a Reaching Communities grant (Big Lottery Community Fund) to continue its work for the next three years. The Timebank builds capacity in West Wight, by recognising and releasing the assets that every individual has. Members offer to do things for others, and in so doing earn a time credit for every hour they do, which they can spend on something another member is offering, save for a time they need something, or give the time credits away to another member.

The timebank now runs a food

redistribution scheme; a Meet and Eat shared lunch in partnership with the Real Junk Food Project IOW CIC; a family Drop and Swap scheme in partnership with Barnardos; an adult Drop and Swap scheme; a garden allotment scheme and a new community voucher scheme designed to support West Wight businesses. The timebank now has 74 individual and 12 organisational members and has exchanged over 5,300 time credits.

A second project, Support Brokerage, will be offered from April under Action 4 Support, where a broker works directly for the person and their family (if appropriate), to make sure they stay in control and get the most out of their lives.

Future growth of Action 4 Support envisages a network of individual timebanks all over the Island, to demonstrate that people are the real wealth of our communities, and that it is through and with other people that we can hope to make positive change.

IW Living Well service ‘inspirational’ praise An innovative, personcentred Isle of Wight service has been described as ‘Inspirational’ at a national conference, and will be used to shape future services across the UK. The statement was made at the recent Better Care Fund National Workshop, in Birmingham, where Charlotte Price (Living Well Project Manager, Age UK Isle of Wight) was invited to talk about the positive difference made by the Isle of Wight’s Living Well Service.

Living Well is a partnership project between Age UK Isle of Wight, Carers IW, People Matter IW and the Way Forward Programme.

The service supports Islanders to lead fulfilling lives and maintain independence through early prevention, self-help and by empowering people to take positive steps to manage their own health and wellbeing.

Charlotte was invited by the Social Care Institute of Excellence, to speak about how the voluntary

sector is helping to support Adult Social Care and other statutory services on the Island.

Charlotte said: “Living Well is now being seen as a part of the wider support system here on the Island, and this truly inspired the audience.

I came away from the conference extremely proud of the work that we have done to make a success of Living Well, and recognising how far ahead of the curve we are nationally, in terms of prevention and early intervention”.

The service supported 1,564 Islanders in its first year, with 76% reporting increased confidence to live well, and 74 per cent feeling more confident to manage their own care.

The Government has awarded a £99,000 grant towards an £840,000 project to renovate the High Street in Sandown.

Innovative businesses, historic buildings, new museums and the restoration of much-loved coastal heritage sites are just some of the projects set to benefit. Here on the Isle of Wight, The Common Space at Sandown are to receive £99,000 from the Coastal Communities Fund to help fund the Bay Micro Brewery and Micro Museum.

A Carrera Vengance electric bike was taken from Brook Beach car park on Wednesday February 27, at around 2pm,. The bike had been locked to a bike rack.

Missing bike.

A Focus hybrid pushbike was left outside Boots the Chemist on School Green Road in Freshwater on Saturday, February 23, at around 4.30pm.

The owner went out after only two minutes but the bike had been taken.

Uninsured cars seized by police Police officers have seized a number of Island cars in a crackdown on untaxed, uninsured and unsafe vehicles.A Toyota RAV4 with no insurance or valid MOT certificate was seized, as was an uninsured Renault Megan. A number of other vehicles have been taken over recent weeks, including an untaxed Ford Fiesta. Drivers have been warned that driving without insurance carries six points and a £300 fine.

Escaped goats Police are appealing for information after damage was caused to a barrier gate on Ventnor Downs. The damage led to the escape of the goats belonging to the National Trust.

Anybody spotting them should call IW 741020.

The damage occurred sometime on March 9 and 10.

Brighstone Barnacles on Ventnor Fringe marks song with sea shanties its 10th anniversary The recently released film ‘Fisherman’s Friends’ features a group of shanty singers from Cornwall who are ‘discovered’ and signed up by a major record label. Scenes from the film show startled audiences being treated to impromptu performances, then singing along with enthusiasm. Now, Islanders are asking ‘Can we hear songs like that over here?’

The answer is a resounding YES! The Isle of Wight is rich in well-established singing groups who specialise in sea-related songs.

Also, the town of Yarmouth will ring with the lusty sound of shanties at a festival this summer.

Last year, the first Celebration of Sea Songs and Shanties was held in Yarmouth on the weekend of what would have been the Old Gaffers, to fill the void left by the ending of the festival. Singers came from all over the UK, joining with local performers to make a superb weekend of song on the Green at Yarmouth. This year, it is all happening again

on 31st May, Ist and 2nd June.

For anyone who cannot wait until June to enjoy some local shanty singing, there are at least four Island groups who will oblige.

The all-male Brighstone Barnacles repertoire includes self-written songs about Isle of Wight events as well as sea songs.

They welcome audiences to their practice sessions at the Three Bishops, Brighstone on three Monday evenings each month. The Shalfleet Shanty Singers are a large mixed group with a more choral style who perform regularly at concerts to raise money for local charities. They can be heard singing together at The Horse and Groom, Ningwood, most Monday evenings. If those two locations are inconvenient, look out for concerts by four-man harmony experts Guith and performances and barn dances from The Crew. Both of these groups are known for their lively sing-along numbers with varied instrumental backing.

Ventnor Fringe, which runs from July 23 to 28, celebrates its 10th Anniversary this summer, with a giant programme of new artists from around the world.

Overwhelming response to MP’s ‘Plan’ petition Island MP Bob Seely’s survey and petition, opposing the building of 9,000 new homes on the Island, attracted over 1,600 responses in just over two days.

Mr. Seely has launched a survey to gauge local reaction to the Island Plan, which will determine the Council’s planning policy for years to come. One contentious part of the plan is to fulfil a Government-imposed plan to build 9,000 new homes on the Island in the next 15 years. He has launched a petition to oppose this element of the plan and a consultation to gather other views on the wider document.

Mr. Seely opposed the housing element of the plan because the Island does not have the infrastructure to support significant extra housing. He wants significantly less housing and greater emphasis placed on building homes to meet the needs of Islanders.

He said: “I am encouraged by the support the petition has gained already. The petition is a reaction to what Islanders have been telling me. Yes, we need new homes, but these need to be for Island people and built in harmony with the Island’s environment.

“The Island needs one and two-bedroom houses to be built to meet the demand of Islanders. Furthermore, we need this housing to be built on brownfield land wherever possible to retain the natural beauty for the benefit of Islanders and visitors. The current proposals are unachievable, unsuitable and

unnecessary.”

Mr. Seely has been invited to attend several public meetings to discuss the contents of the Island Plan in relation to specific areas of the Island. He continued: “I am very interested to hear what my constituents think about the Island Plan, and I encourage everyone to sign the petition and complete the survey, which can be found at http://islandvision.uk/ islandplan. Controlled bomb blast in Totland

Royal Navy Bomb Disposal experts and HM Coastguard were called to Totland on Sunday afternoon, following reports of a number of objects spotted on the beach.

Needles Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked to locate the two objects of ordnance seen by a member of the public, who was beachcombing. The objects were found, photographed and their position recorded by team members, before a plan was established with the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal to assess the Ordnance.

After the bomb disposal team had discovered the objects contained live explosive, the two pieces of ordnance were taped together and secured in a bag, before being carried out into the tide where a controlled explosion was carried out.

Coastguard officers created a 200-metre wide cordon on the beach whilst the work was undertaken. Both teams had cleared the scene by 6.45pm.

Fire crews spent an afternoon washing over 40 cars for the charity that exist to support the everyday heroes of the UK fire community.

A spokesperson for Freshwater fire station said: "Thank you so much to all of the beautiful kind people that came and supported our charity car wash in Freshwater and especially to all the children that chipped in with hosing and rinsing.

"With your kind donations we raised a whopping £400 for The Fire Fighters Charity and washed over 40 vehicles.

Thank you to Rapanui for the use of the car park and to The Freshwater Coffee House for refreshments."

Council set to minimise environmental impact The Isle of Wight Council looks set to commit to continue its record of minimising its environmental impact and maintaining the beauty of the Island, if a motion put down by a Conservative Councillor is passed at the next Full Council meeting.

Cllr. Chris Whitehouse (Conservative, Newport West Ward) has given notice that he intends to move the following Motion: "To move that, in the light of scientific reports relating to the world’s climate, the Isle of Wight Council, in keeping with its longstanding record, will continue to take all reasonable steps to minimise its environmental impact and to maintain the beauty of our Island."

Cllr. Whitehouse said: "We need to protect and preserve the Island environment so that it remains a healthy place to live and an attractive destination to visit. The current Conservative administration in County Hall is already delivering excellent waste recycling, reduction and re-use, and the garden waste collection scheme is proving extremely successful.

We have

dramatically reduced the amount of waste going to landfill or being burned on garden bonfires, so reducing our environmental impact and improving air quality.’

The Councillor, who recently organised a Parliamentary briefing meeting with Conservative peer, Lord Deben, the Chair of the Committee on Climate Change, continued: "Other political parties have a tendency to jump upon every passing environmental bandwagon, but Conservatives just get on with doing the job of protecting and improving our environment; reducing pollution and improving air quality."

Transport improvements were also highlighted by Cllr.

Whitehouse, who added: "We’re investing in improving footpaths and introducing new cycleways, and encouraging our schools to promote healthier travel options both to reduce air pollution and to improve children’s health. Our main ferry companies are already introducing more ecofriendly vessels, and we’re lobbying the government to reduce the ridiculously high

numbers of new houses that civil servants have persuaded Ministers to ask us to build.

We’re also tracking traffic congestion with schemes to improve the flow of motor-

vehicles on our roads, and we’re doing what we can to encourage the use of electric cars, which are much less polluting than their petrol or diesel counterparts."

Greg Chapman starts off national tour on Island Local entertainer Greg Chapman, most often seen on the Island performing at numerous events throughout the year at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, is about to start the national tour of his new one-man adventure comedy show, and he has chosen to make sure the tour begins on home ground.

Greg's one-man Christmas show premiered in Shalfleet Village Hall, and he says that he can't imagine starting the tour of his new show, Greg Chapman: Into The Wilderness, anywhere else.

He said: "It is just the perfect venue for an opening night.

It has an intimacy, but also such a unique atmosphere, the perfect place to perform a new show. Especially the way I like to take the audience along for the ride with me, it is a venue where the line between audience and performer is easy to blur in the right way."

The show, which also features storytelling, physical comedy and magic, will have its world premier tomorrow (Sat) at Shalfleet Village Hall, followed by performances at the Brighstone Scout Centre on April 26, and, just before heading off to the rest of the country, Greg will appear at Aspire, Ryde, on May 10.

He said the show at Aspire, Ryde, was an answer to complaints, saying: "After my Christmas show, I got a lot of complaints that all of my Island shows were in West Wight, so I've made sure there is a big venue in Ryde for everyone on the East of the Island to come along!"

Westminster know-all MP’s have now pushed us too far

Whatever they say now, both major parties, and the Lib Dems, pledged to honour the result of the EU referendum.

They also repeatedly stated that this was a ‘once in a generation’ offer, in or out, a binary choice.

Any MP marching last Saturday, demanding a second go, was an utter hypocrite. Arguably, worst of all of them was Vince Cable, and then there’s Nicola Sturgeon. Can you imagine if the Scots had voted narrowly to leave the United Kingdom when they had their independence poll? If Cameron had announced the following morning that they’d need to vote again because they ‘didn’t know what they were voting for’.

Braveheart 2 would have seen the SNP and its supporters put on their kilts, strap on their sporrans and charge down to London, to battle for their freedom!

In the hours before our referendum, the remain side became increasingly anxious to secure victory. In a final push, Chancellor Osbourne threatened us with higher interest rates, an emergency budget ‘by Friday’ and a house price crash.

None of it worked, the peasants still revolted. 17.4 million of us cheerfully ignored him.

I was a (small) part of the local campaign. I went on local radio, to debate with the other side.

Vix Lowthian and Nicholas Belfitt put the remain case. It seemed to me that they just loved the undemocratic EU, mostly because of its workers’ rights and environmental policies, neither of which are threatened by the UK regaining its independence. Leavers are not planning on sending children back up chimneys, and I believe Remainers mostly fear change, the unknown.

Brexit was never about just trade: it’s about who governs Britain, who makes our laws, us or them? Britain already co-operates with non-EU countries in many ways in matters such as defence,

environment, health, trade, energy, aid, shipping and more. We’re not a banana republic. We’re one of the good guys. We set standards. We’re one of the world’s richest countries too. We think globally, and, independent of the EU, we will prosper.

I accept that some leave voters may have heard the words ‘take back control of our borders’ and decided that meant EU immigrants going home, but (rightly) that was never going to happen. Good hardworking people come here from around the world for a better life, to work for us, because we need them. We still will.

It’s not their fault that the government’s failed to build enough infrastructure.

A growing population puts pressure on housing, health and schools, but building new homes is unpopular with voters, so weak self-serving politicians wriggleout of their responsibilities. Even on the island, they kick the can down the road.

A handful of not-bornhere people make tabloid headlines when they commit crimes, but they no more represent all migrants than Donald Trump represents all Americans. An independent Britain will be free to deport criminals without outside interference.

What’s really going on in parliament now is tyranny.

The electorate has never held politicians in high regard. We blow raspberries at them, and when we discovered they were abusing our trust, claiming for anything and everything, our contempt was confirmed. We were cross.

Westminster know-all MP’s have now pushed us too far. Many deserve to lose their jobs, for obstructing our vote, and looking down their noses at us. And for thinking they know better than the people who put them there.

Cowes Week support for Youth Sailing

Cowes Week Limited, organisers of Lendy Cowes Week, the world's best-known sailing regatta, have announced they will continue their youth initiative, which offers discounted entry fees to boats with crews of under 25-year-olds.

The Under 25 Youth initiative, which has been running since 2012, has succeeded in doing what it was originally designed for, inspiring and making it possible for young people to race at Cowes Week.

By offering an extremely attractive package to young sailors numbers have increased over the last few years, with young crews enjoying both the exciting racing and the lively post-match sail scene shoreside.

This year, Cowes Week Ltd is offering the first

25 crews to enter, who are all under age 25 at the time of the regatta, a 50 per cent discount on the entry fee. Laurence Mead, Regatta Director, said: "It's very exciting to see all the young faces enjoying Lendy Cowes Week.

Bicentennial celebrations of Queen Victoria’s birth The East Cowes Bicentennial birthday celebrations of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert Victoria are approaching, and after some two years of planning under the guidance of East Cowes Community Partnership, a number of exciting town events have been planned.

The first signs of the celebrations are the floral displays in the town, created by Friends of East Cowes. Organisers hope Islanders will join in the celebrations by dressing in traditional Victorian clothing or entering a float and joining in the town procession. A town exhibition begins on May 25, and entry will be free.

The town tapestry will be unveiled at Osborne House on May 23, and the town’s Queen Victoria Trail will be opened the following day. A town show is also planned, produced by Amy White Theatre.

Descendants of Queen Victoria’s Munchi, Abdul Karim, will be attending the event as well the Mayor of Coburg and Island dignatries. East Cowes and Whippingham residents are asked to join in by dressing their homes with bunting and flags.

One of the organisers of the bicentennial celebrations, East Cowes Councillor, Karl Love, said: “Our town is set to deliver an amazing bicentennial event during the weekend of the May 24 to 27. It’s only possible because the people of our town have come together as community volunteers to

create a spectacular weekend event.

"I’m looking forward to meeting the descendants of Abdul, Queen Victoria’s Munchi, and the Mayor of Coburg and showing them around our historic town.”

After releasing five studio albums and one compilation since 2011, the Isle of Wight-based electro-rock act Strange are set to release a ‘Best Of’ album.

The album, titled ‘WTF?!’ (in reference to the bands slightly bizarre and off the wall music) is a massive 16-track collection of Mr. Strange fan favourites and live staples that has been over a year in the making, with the majority of songs having been re-recorded to bring older tracks in line with the higher production values of the band’s more recent output. The album also features a new song in the shape of ‘Spin Me Round’, a cover of the eighties pop classic by Dead of Alive.

The band, consisting of Anthony Strange on guitar, Damian Strange on drums and Saul Strange on vocals, said: “This album is the perfect starting point for people who are new to the band.

We’ve released a fair amount of music over the years. and ‘WTF?!’ gives folks a little taste of everything we’ve done in one snazzy package!”

The Isle of Wight Council has received £175,000 of Government funding to help the Island's rough sleepers find accommodation and support.

The Council estimates there have been between 24 and 34 rough sleepers on Island streets over the last few months. Dedicated members of staff will now support a community-based, multiagency homeless hub with outreach services for those sleeping rough who have multiple and complex needs with alcohol, drugs or mental health. Funds are also being used to help and support three people through a local pilot of the national ‘Housing First’ initiative to help the

No deal or no Brexit, that is the question says Darrel UKIP’s prospective parliamentary candidate Daryll Pitcher has challenged Bob Seely to make his position clear to Islanders as pressure mounts on those on both sides of the Brexit debate. Mr Pitcher said in a statement yesterday “Given the urgent and pressing nature of Brexit I contacted the MP for the Island to seek his views on the two possible outcomes that I could see were now left on the table, No Deal or No Brexit.

I emphasised that this is an important issue for many of his constituents, 62% of whom voted to Leave the EU in 2016.

I urged him for a quick response so that we could all know his intentions and thoughts. A mere 30 hours before we were supposed to leave the EU I have still

received no response.

“Remainer Theresa May promised us no fewer than 108 times that we would leave the EU on 29th March and our MP has supported her at every opportunity.

He has described the Withdrawal Agreement on national radio as ‘not a bad deal at all’ even though it is now pretty clear that it is dead in the water.

He should be letting Islanders know his position and for him to be missing in action now is a dereliction of his duty.

On the day that we should be leaving the EU surely it is not too much to ask for him to make clear if he would vote for No Deal or No Brexit if push comes to shove. I believe the choice will become that stark very soon.”

Council leader welcomes views on housing plans Isle of Wight Council leader, Dave Stewart, has welcomed an online consultation seeking views on future housing numbers for the Island.

He described the initiative from MP Bob Seely as 'a valuable extra source of opinion and feedback' to sit alongside the formal consultation on the Island’s new planning blueprint.

Cllr. Stewart said:“It is vital we have a valid and broad representation of local views to present to the government and that our new Island Planning Strategy accurately reflects all the key issues including housing need, homelessness, affordability, suitability of location, market forces and so on. We have more than 2,000 people on our housing

register and nearly 200 families in temporary accommodation at any one time. We do need to find a sustainable way of supporting these members of our community into their own homes.

“There is clearly a need for the right type and number of homes in the right places, for Islanders. The economic challenges of building homes for rent on the Island are clear to us, and we need to collectively find new and innovative approaches to overcoming this key issue.

“We will be working closely with the MP and other key stakeholders to achieve what is right for this Island of ours, which naturally we all wish to see protected while meeting the future

needs of our population.”

Councillor Stewart said there had been extensive consultation on the new Island Planning Strategy, in which the proposal was for an average of 641 new homes per year over its 15 year lifespan.

He added: “We are now at the stage of considering feedback on the strategy, and clearly it is vital that our submission to government is strongly evidencebased.

“As we are an Island, the issue of future housing numbers is a particularly sensitive subject, and we are dealing with this matter and the related discussions with government as an absolute priority.”

Easter gift to Chale Church A much-loved Isle of Wight Church is to share in a £323,687 funding payout from the National Churches Trust. A £15,000 National Churches Trust Cornerstone Grant will help fund the installation of toilet facilities and a new kitchen at the Grade II* listed St. Andrew’s Church, Chale, helping the church to better serve its local community. The project will assist the congregation to install toilet facilities with disabled access to the former north porch. In addition, a kitchen will be fitted to the west wall.

Huw Edwards, Vice President of The National Churches Trust, said: “The UK’s historic churches and chapels are a vital part of out national heritage. But to survive, many need to carry out urgent repairs and install modern facilities. The cost of this work is far beyond what most congregations can pay for

themselves. I am therefore delighted that the Church of St. Andrew’s Chale is being helped with a £15,000 National Churches Trust Grant. The work on the installation of toilet facilities and a new kitchen will help to ensure the church’s future as an important community building.”

Churchwardens, Mr. Sven Tester and Mrs. Lesley Sprake, said: “We have been fundraising for the past five years for this project and have had great local support and some generous grants from our Diocese and charities. The grant from the National Churches Trust has transformed our finances and is a huge help in pushing our plans forward. Over the years our Island pubs have discovered local produce is the way to go!

By Peter White The Isle of Wight is on the crest of a wave, having been recently listed as the seventh most popular destination in the UK, it has so much to offer visitors.

Pubs have been transformed into great eating-out establishments over the last 10 years, since the vigorous drinkdrive laws come into play. Instead of a pint and a curled up sandwich, which had been sitting in a glass cabinet for two days on top of the bar, they are now hiring top chefs to produce some amazing dishes which appeal to the whole family.

Deborah, landlady of the Sportsmans Rest, told us: “We serve traditional pub classics such as fish and chips, steak and ale pie (£9.95), and a range of tasty burgers starting from £6.95. We also cater for Sundays, offering a great Sunday roast with a choice of up to four meats, and the choice of half portions.

We are open seven days a week from midday. However, it is advisable to book evenings and weekends.”

You can find many pubs located around the Island offering a vast range of different food. The Castle Inn located in Newport High Street has just been taken over by Simon Cant and Liam White who are both head chefs. Simon who previously managed The Crown Inn, Shorwell said: “Because we are both head chefs and related we are passionate about our food. We are a family pub which serves homemade dishes such as liver and bacon (£9.95), burgers from £9.95, and pies. On a Sunday lunchtime we are becoming known for our Sunday roasts, we usually offer two meats and all the trimmings starting at £9.25 for an adult roast. Our plans are to keep the The Castle Inn as a traditional English pub.”

Of course, the current trend is the more local produce you have on your menu the more the locals will like what you are trying to achieve. There are many local producers on the Isle of Wight, more so than a similar area on the mainland.

Local producers are also up against it trying to compete with all the imported food which makes its way onto the Island. However, people are prepared to pay that little bit more for local produce than they would pay for the same product from a supermarket.

It’s also good to see that many of the pubs and restaurants on the Island also adopt this ethos when designing their

menu. We spoke to Abi Rudd from Farmer Jacks, who said: “It’s all about food miles nowadays. Our food travels from our local farm to our shop down the road, so because of this in most cases it’s cheaper and fresher than any supermarket equivalent.

“People are amazed when they get to the check-out and find our produce cheaper than most major outlets across the Island. Also, it’s all about seasons, and coming into season now we have favourites such as rhubarb, radishes, asparagus, broad beans and runner beans. Again, all this produce is fresh from our farm.

“Also, people have to consider the

other benefits such as fewer food miles, supporting local farmers, and of course it tastes a lot better!”

You can find small shops right across the Island which supports local produce, including the West Wight.

A good example of such a store is the well established Orchard Brothers located in Freshwater. Established since 1865, it serves a vital role in the local community.

We asked shop owner Mark Orchard how the opening of the new Co-Op has affected them. He said: “Any shop that opens offering the same as you will affect you in some way, so I have to constantly think of ways of making my shop different from the rest. I cook my own hams which are very popular with the locals. I also try to ensure we stock a good range of local produce such as Isle of Wight cheese, milk, honey, beer and Mermaid Gin, plus a range of jams and preserves. I also supply local fruit and veg when its in season.

“People don’t realise how expensive some large stores can be for day to day groceries, most of the time we are cheaper. Our store has been trading since 1865 and we have seen so many changes over the years. I guess people now are very careful with their money,

We still have a hardcore customer base, those who support local produce, or cannot drive, or the elderly, as we always help them with their shop.

“It’s getting close for retirement as I am now a pensioner and even now I still work 10 hours a day to keep the shop open, although I do have Sundays off!

But I love the job.”

So when speaking to people in the business it comes across that there is still a strong following for local shops, local produce and good old-fashioned local service. However, in order to maintain this you, the reader, must do your bit in some way to support local business in any way that you can.

Will the big players destroy what we know as local suppliers? Well not really, they have realised that this cannot be done so many of them make efforts to stock offerings from local farmers and producers, so in a way everyone seems to be doing their bit to support local producers.

However, there is a big black cloud looming over local producers and that is BREXIT. Yes, I actually thought that we could get through this article without mentioning the ‘B’ word. It must be worrying for farmers not knowing what is going to happen. In, out, shake it all about! Will it ever end, and to what cost to the country and its farmers?

We will all have to wait and see, it’s like groundhog day every morning.

Whatever the outcome, as long as we continue to support our local pubs and producers across the Island, they will all survive, I’m sure.

Bird watchers are going Islanders march for Brexit cuckoo over rare visitor

Over 100 Islanders travelled to London this weekend to join in the Put It To The People march at the end of another tumultuous week of Brexit politics.

One group hired a coach from Portsmouth, supported and part funded by donations, and filled with families and older people, a large proportion of whom had never been to a protest before. Glenn Koppany,

from Islanders for Europe, said: “It was such a fantastic day with a lovely, positive atmosphere along the route. We were overwhelmed to be surrounded by well over a million bright and hopeful people, of all ages and backgrounds. The Isle of Wight continued our reputation for musical contributions to the march, this time with the addition of a couple of ukuleles!”

Scooter themed bar opens in Ryde Bird watchers and amateur photographers from across the United Kingdom have gathered in Ventnor to observe and photograph a very unusual guest to these shores.

A great spotted cuckoo has been sighted at Horseshoe Bay, half-way between Wheelers and Monks Bay. This is the first official sighting of the rare visitor on the Island since 1986, when

one was seen at Brighstone.

The great spotted cuckoo is usually found in Africa and the Mediterranean, where it is common, but rarely ventures further north. It is very seldom seen in the United Kingdom. The cuckoo feeds on insects, spiders, small reptiles and hairy caterpillars, which many other birds find unpleasant.

Unlike the native cuckoo, neither the hen nor the

hatched chick of this species evict the host's eggs. This species' chicks secrete a repellent scent when predators threaten, which protects the great spotted cuckoo chicks as well as the host's chicks from predators.

Birds of prey and feral cats less frequently prey on nests that include a great spotted cuckoo chick.

A new scooter themed bar is set to open its doors today (Friday) in Union Street, Ryde.

Union Jaks, aimed at the 60s scooter scene, will also be serving snacks and will host live music events from local bands, featuring Mod, Northern Soul and Motown.

Owner manager, Stuart Steel, who also owns and runs the popular local pub, The High Park Tavern, is working with his business partner, Alan Gerrard, on the project. The bar is furnished with scooter memorabilia and motown themed décor.

Stuart said: “We’re aiming to have a really chilled out vibe. We will cater for over 25s

only, and it’ll be quite laid back: somewhere you can take the Missus. There’ll be no juke box, no fruit machine and no sport, just a welcoming atmosphere.”

Plastic packaging Armed police called reduced by Asda

Armed Police and paramedics rushed to the former Cygnet Hotel on Carter Street in Sandown after a man was alleged to have made threats to life. A number of armed officers then entered the property on the corner of the Broadway with support from local dog units. Witnesses reported hearing a male resident at the Bed and Breakfast

threatening to ‘blow someone’s legs off’.

The following day, Hampshire Constabulary confirmed they were called to Carter Street after concerns had been raised for the welfare of a man aged in his 40s. A spokesperson for the force said no weapon had been located and that further action was being taken.

Asda has announced it has removed 6,500 tonnes of plastic from its own brand packaging since February, 2018. The milestone marks a significant step towards the supermarket’s ongoing commitment to reducing the amount of plastic used in product packaging.

Through product innovation and redesign, Asda has reduced plastic in almost 1,000 individual product lines, from fresh fruit and veg to electronics and homewares, removing

the equivalent weight of 600 million empty plastic bottles.

As it hits this first year reduction milestone, the retailer has acknowledged that this is only the beginning of the journey and has committed to continuing its focus on reducing the amount of plastic used in packaging, as well as working with industry bodies and relevant organisations to share best practice and develop new ideas.

Safety bulletin Shorter school day for Christ the King College for mariners Proposed changes to the timetable at Christ the King College may result in a shorter lunch-break and an earlier finish for pupils.

The school is considering changing from five 60-minute lessons to six 50-minute lessons, removing the need for one double lesson.

The school will be moving into a new site next year. However, the amount of external playground space is limited. The school hopes a reduced lunchtime would prevent issues related to the loss of this space.

The Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) has issued a special safety bulletin to all mariners that use GPS to prepare for a rollover event that will occur on April 6.

On that date navigation data from some older GPS systems might become inaccurate due to the ‘week number’ rollover event.

This could cause stand-alone GPS receivers and systems using GPS chips to produce data that is 19.7 years either in the past or future, thereby generating errors in both the GPS position and time. However, if onboard equipment has been installed after August 1999, or has regular firmware updates from the manufacturer, there should be minimal risk of an error occurring.

Luke Hallett, Radio Spectrum Policy Coordinator for the Maritime & Coastguard

Agency, said: “If your GPS is more than 10 years old or it’s had no firmware updates, then you’re definitely at higher risk of your GPS not working from April 6. If your GPS falls into either of those categories, you need to check with the manufacturer before April 6, otherwise time and position data used for navigation could become inaccurate. It’s important that GPS users check their systems as soon as possible, to ensure that they won’t be affected by the impending rollover.”

The MCA’s safety bulletin is intended to help operators understand the implications of the week-number rollover and to take action to ensure all GPS updates are completed.

RNLI called out for medical emergency Bembridge RNLI’s Lifeboat assisted in the ‘medivac’ of a cruise ship crew member who had suffered a suspected heart attack on Sunday.

RNLB Alfred Albert Williams was launched at the request of Solent Coastguard to assist in the transfer of a crew member from the cruise ship ‘Ventura’. The cruise ship was located about 12 miles south of Bembridge,

having left Southampton earlier in the evening en route to Vigo.The Coastguard helicopter was also tasked, and the Lifeboat stood by in case it wasn’t possible to airlift the crew member.

Once the helicopter transfer had been successfully carried out, the ‘Alfred Albert Williams’ was released and returned to Bembridge.

After being under early pressure, they soon got into their stride, to build a 12-0 lead through Sayers and Mitchell Farrant.

Greg Dean, Sayers and two Farrant conversions stretched the lead, and that was quickly followed up by tries from Sam Buckingham, Charles Little and Dove with two more Farrant conversions for a 45-0 interval lead.

The onslaught continued at the start of the second half as Newton Jr dummied the opposing centre and ran in from 50 yards. The pick of the tries came moments later, from Farrant, the youngest member of the team. A clever run by Little, who smartly passed to Woody, who then offloaded to the supporting Farrant, to score under the posts. Farrant converted his own try to provide a 57-0 lead. Sayers then completed his hat-trick, shrugging off defenders and scoring impressively Farnham hit back with a score of their own, but Hurricanes’ final try came from Josh Wetherick running a clever angle to dissect the Farnham defensive. The conversion was added and with 10 conversions out of 13, Farrant proved deadly from the tee.

West Cowes Con are once again the Cowes and District Snooker League champions. Although they comprehensively secured their unassailable position in the table several weeks ago, and are champions for the third year running, they narrowly lost 3-4 on their final match.

There were several close games; Ky Wheeler narrowly beat Ricky Ebbs on the black and Mikey Goodwin beat James Brett on the black also by a narrow margin of one point. The ‘Old Master’ Septuagenarian Bob Kennovin was on top form by beating Martin Cheverton 67 to 26.East Cowes Lib C 4 v East Cowes Lib A 3: East Cowes Lib A were ahead 3 -2 after the singles but Lib C managed to pull back and win both the pairs games.

There were several high scoring frames by both teams.

Wilson double helps Shanklin to victory Shanklin maintained their impressive form in Division One of the Harwoods Renault IW League.

Their 5-0 win at home to Osborne Coburg closed the gap on leaders Whitecroft and Barton to just four points, although W&B still have four games in hand.

Peter Wilson netted twice to lead the Shanklin spree, with Wane Newnham, Phill McDonald and Ryan Gregory were also on the scoresheet.

Northwood St John, in third spot, lost ground on Shanklin, by only drawing 0-0 at Pan Sports. The game between Ventnor and Cowes Sports also ended all square, with both sides scoring once, while Brading were convincing 4-2 winners at E.C.S. The top-of-the-table clash in Division Two saw Bembridge edge

home against Ryde Saints by the odd goal in five. With Bembridge having already won promotion, they were now playing to win league, and they were in front on 11 minutes, and doubled their advantage before half time, after Saints were cut to 10 men.

The leaders went further ahead on the hour, before Saints staged a comeback with two goals, despite being down to nine men with another dismissal for the last 15minutes. They worked hard, however, and went close to getting something from the game.

Also in Division Two, Adgestone won 6-1 at Brighstone, Seaview were too strong for Niton Community; running out 6-2 winners; Wroxall took the points from East Cowes A with a 4-2 success, and plucky Yarmouth and Calbourne without a

point all season, went down 10-2 at Oakfield.

In Combination One, W&B Sports Reserves put four past Ryde Saints Reserves without reply, their goals coming from Scott Curliss, Danny Cantelo 1(pen), Matt Evans and Kieran Lewis.

Burns and Idle in super form for Untouchaballs

Island turn in best show of season for super win Farnborough 21 points IWRFC 27 Isle of Wight RFC turned in arguably the performance of the season to win at Farnborough. That was the unanimous view of players and supporters alike, as a much-changed Island side dominated much of the match with fast movement, quick handling and aggressive defence.

Farnborough were hammered back from the start by an aggressive Island defence, who when turning over ball, countered with pace and vision.

Early pressure on the home side line saw Rouse Man of the Match Luke Blackman crash over, Lewis Murray adding the conversion.

Throughout the game, much of what the Islanders did involved Blackman, be it in attack or defence.

Handling with confidence, the ball wizzed along the

back line for Owain Hooper to score. Murray added a conversion for a 15-0 half time lead, even with them being reduced to 14 as Biffa Man of the Day, Chris Ormorod was yellow carded.

Farnborough looked out of ideas and totally stunned, much to the frustration of a vocal home crowd. This was further added to as Hooper showed his pace, outflanking the home defence for his second score. A further score was added, through sustained pressure, with Murray’s conversion giving the visitors a 27 – 0 lead, with 15 minutes left.

The yellow carding of Murray led to a tough last 15 minutes as the Islanders began to tire and Farnborough found some form with the ball. Three tries by the home side brought them back in to contention, but determined defence was not going to allow the home side to score further.

Hugh Idle The 2019 Isle of Wight Table Tennis Premier League, sponsored by Trigg & Co. got underway at The Isle of Wight Table Tennis Centre at Smallbrook, Ryde.

Dan Burns and Island Junior Champion Hugh Idle were unbeaten as The Untouchaballs saw off spirited resistance from The Ballcrushers, Anna Joyce and Temeesha Hobbs. Both Joyce

and Hobbs took Idle right to the wire in two five-set thrillers, and Hobbs performed brilliantly to take a set off Burns. But the Untouchaballs proved too strong and secured a 5-0 victory.

Don Hobbs was on fire winning both of his singles in straight sets, and Jim Hall, a latecomer to the Premier League owing to the withdrawal of a player, notched a victory as Follically Challenged put the

Ryde Realists of Lee Orton and Tim Giles to the sword with a 4-1 success. Orton registered for the Realists in a five-set encounter against Hall.

Premier League matches take place on Wednesday evenings at Smallbrook, starting at 7.30 pm, through to April 24, for anyone wishing to watch some fast, exciting and top level table tennis.

Cowes Ladies grab win in seven-goal thriller Cowes Ladies came from behind to snatch a fine win over Rushmoor. Although Malandra Reed gave Cowes an early lead with a shot from outside the penalty area, Rushmoor, with plenty of pace up front, hit back with three goals before the break, and also had another rightly disallowed, when they found the net straight from an indirect free kick.

But Cowes were undeterred, and showing plenty of belief and character, they edged back in front thanks to another goal from Malandra, and one apiece from Jess Penton and Charlee Roberts.

Chick said: "Rushmoor are a strong unit. Every time we play them, they always give a serious challenge. My Ladies went 1-3 down and heads dropped, but over about 20 minutes they managed to get there heads up again and change their attitude. It was just like they had flicked a switch, and stepped up a gear.

“This performance really showed progression, passion and exactly what my ladies are made of, but nothing can be taken away from Rushmoor, who fought right until the very end with a gracious and relentless performance."

Isle of Wight RFC 2nd XV edged a rip-roaring tussle at Farnborough in dramatic style, confirming a Hampshire Three title decider at second placed Hook & Odiham. In a seesaw struggle which saw the lead change hands several times, IW salvaged a remarkable victory despite adverse circumstances.

A depleted line-up saw IW use their only replacement early on, and struggled to contain the rampant hosts who scored twice to lead 10-5 after 30 minutes.

But IW hit back in style as debutant Jordan Langdon touched down, and Biffa man of the match Blowers converted and kicked a penalty before half-time for a 15-10 lead.

The power and pace of Farnborough threatened to overwhelm IW, and their fifth try left the score at 2720 with 15 minutes to play.

The Wight warriors seemed dead and buried, but they collectively raised their game and wasted an opportunity before a great try was finished at the corner flag

by Salar Bettum. Blowers’ conversion attempt bounced back off the crossbar, and IW still trailed by two with less than 10 minutes to play.

Again IW roared back, and Gary Warvill’s penalty two minutes edged them ahead.

IW travel to second-placed Hook & Odiham tomorrow (Sat) for their penultimate game of the campaign in the knowledge that the entire season is on the line. Win and they are champions, lose and they will almost certainly finish second.

Arreton score victory again for hat-trick

The Isle of Wight Grand National and Ashey Scurry, amateur racing over hedges and hurdles, returned to the Island, and organisers could not have hoped for better weather and the ground conditions. There were over a 1,000 people at the event, some of whom travelled via the IW steam railway, who enjoyed some very good racing.

There were 27 runners spread over five races, with a good mixture of Island and mainland competitors.

The youngest competitor was Nicholas Waghorn, age nine, competing for the first time. He led for a long time in the first race, the Puffin Billy Stakes. There was rather a chaotic start with stops and falls but local rider Kacey Hallet

on Woody managed to find a turn of speed to take first place with Nicholas a creditable third behind his older brother John.

The David Biles Memorial Commentators’ Cup, awarded by the commentary team for any event during the day, was handed to John Waghorn for getting back on his pony Chevy after falling off at the first fence, and finishing the race in second place. The second race fielded the most runners with 10 entered. Local rider Georgia Carmichael took the victory riding Carla Bear. She was also awarded the trophy for the highest placed cob.

Race three, The Scurry, saw six riders battling for victory. It was a photo finish

with Helen Booth managing to get a nose ahead. Karen Begley took the trophy for the best placed local rider. Race four, the Junior Scurry had the least runners entered but it was a fast race from the onset. Victory went to mainland rider Mad Peries riding Buddy.

The Grand National had its ups and downs but victory went to Lilly Bradstock riding Leroy from the mainland. It was unfortunate that a horse taking part in the Grand National suffered a serious injury, which is sadly not unusual in the sport across the country both at amateur and professional meetings.

The horse sadly had to be put down on the course.

The annual Interschool Team and Individual Dressage Competition took place at Little Kennerley Farm on Tuesday 26th March. The primary schools competition saw a team win for Arreton Primary School, making it a hat-trick for them having won the completion in 2018 and 2017! Students can choose between three tests based on their experience.

The led Intro B test was won by Esme Colley from Niton Primary with a score of 68.7% closely followed by Elizabeth Waghorn, riding for Arreton Primary with a score of 68.48%. Third place went to Olivia Hughes riding for Northwood Primary. The Intro B section was won By Harrison Hendy riding for Priory School with a good score of 69.78%. He pipped Bethany Kinnaird from Greenmount Primary with third place going to Nicholas Waghorn riding for Arreton.

What was great to see in this section was that there were three boys in the top six! The secondary section saw a win for Medina College.

There were a large number of entries for Test 13 so it was split into two sections.

The A section saw a win for Bella Green riding for Ryde School with an impressive score of 75.19%. Second spot went to Jess Morris representing Medina College with a score of 73.65% with third going to Charlie Adkins riding for Christ the King.

Section B saw a win for Christ the King rider, Kimberley Dyer with a score of 74.62% with second place going to Amelia Morgan riding for Carisbrooke College.

We had equal third place for Megan Lightbown riding for Medina College and Eloise Atkey riding for the island free school.

Test 24 saw a win for Shannon Cox riding Baby bell for Medina College, just ahead of Phoebe Raby riding for the Priory, with Jasmin Wilson coming third for Medina College.

It was a long day with over 80 tests ridden- the students were a credit to their schools.

All Stars win 5-Star award

Josh off to skipper in Round World Race Former UKSA student and instructor Josh Stickland, 31, has been announced as one of the 11 professional skippers to lead a novice team in the 40,000 nauticalmile Clipper 2019-20 Round the World Race.

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is undoubtedly one of the greatest ocean adventures, also regarded as one of its toughest endurance challenges, taking almost a year to complete on the world’s largest matched fleet of 70-ft ocean racing yachts.

Josh (pictured above) said: “It has been a long time coming! I have wanted to be a Clipper Race Skipper since I qualified as a professional skipper when I was 22 at UKSA. Before then I didn't even know it could be a job, but when I found out it was possible, I wanted to do it and have been working to get to this point.”

Josh has fond memories of his time at UKSA. He said: “I'd like to thank everyone at UKSA throughout my years of learning and working there.

It really is a special place that is always a joy to return to

and has given me the support and the coaching needed to get me where I have today.

When this chapter comes to a close I look forward to seeing all of you! ” UKSA’s CEO Ben Willows is delighted that Josh has been selected and said: “I have had the pleasure of seeing Josh grow and develop as a professional yachtsman during his time at UKSA. As a popular instructor and member of the USKA team, I know we will all be watching him closely as he takes on this epic race with his crew.”

Ryde rowers back on water for new season

Ryde Rowing Club competed in their first event of the season, the BTC Rowing Club’s Coastal and River Head of the River Race, on the River Itchen, Southampton.

The Wightlink sponsored club had a young and relatively inexperienced team afloat, several making their racing debuts for the club, but produced an encouraging set of results.

The newly formed Men’s Novice Four of Paddy Kearney, Jonah Lewin, Charlie Walford and Gulliver Roghan coxed by Dan Sanderson competed in the First Division in a river four finishing in second place.

Also racing in Division One was Harry Jones in his first race as a Coastal Novice sculler and did well to finish third in his event.

In the Second Division a very young Girls Four of Poppy Starkey, Freya Drage, Niamh Edwards and Emily Davis and once again coxed by Dan Sanderson competed in the Girls J16 Coxed Quad – racing above their age group – and did exceptionally well to finish second.

The club’s Coastal Junior Four made the decision to race in small boats as they completed their winter training cycle, with Tom Starkey and Ben Sanderson racing in the open men’s double where some steering difficulties led to a fourth place finish. Austin Smith and Tye Cameron raced in the Men’s Novice Sculls in River boats with Austin finishing second and Tye third.

Two of the Island’s All Star Cricket Centres, Arreton and Ventnor Cricket Clubs were recognised for their achievements over the last two years by being awarded a 5-Star Centre plaque by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

The award is for Centres that have had over 30 children for the past two years involved in the ECB’s entry level participation programme, aimed at providing children aged five to eight with a great first experience in cricket.

There were 170 boys and girls taking part across the seven Centres last year, and the Isle of Wight Cricket Board are hoping to see an increase in those numbers for this year, with new fully accredited centres coming on board.

Every child who registers will receive a backpack full of goodies including a cricket bat, ball, activity book, personalised shirt and cap all sent straight to your door and will get eight onehour sessions, held over eight weeks, where the emphasis will be on having fun and being active, whilst developing your child’s movement skills.

Action galore as Indoor bowlers battle for titles Isle of Wight Indoor Bowls Club’s championship finals have taken place, with the men’s and the ladies’ singles matches proving fairly onesided affairs. Anne Bernard took the Ladies trophy for the first time, dominating her game against Tiger Carpenter winning 21-2 in only 10 ends. The Men’s final was dominated by previous winner Alan Cawdell. Playing against Ron Leleux he had a 17-3 lead 11 ends and went on to secure the title 21-9.

The men’s pairs final saw Ian Morey and Bob Mortlock against David Jones and Cawdell. The former looked on their way to a comfortable win when they led 12-4 but the opponents came back strongly to level the scores.

On the extra end Mortlock

drew shot to win the game 17-16.

The ladies’ pairs was much less competitive with Pauline Proud and Bernard running out 21-5 against Annette Hall and Sue Green.

Simon New Chris New, Peter Furmidge and Leleux took on Paul Attrill, Darren Griffith, Allen Best and Jack Berry in the men’s fours, and Berry’s four were successful by 20-14.

The mixed fours involving Proud, Chris Morey, Ian Morey and Mortlock against Bernard, Wendy Thipthorp, Furmidge and Jack Berry was a fluctuating contest, but it was Mortlock’s rink who took the extra end to secure a 19-18 success.

There was another win for Cawdell when joined by

Griffith and Jack Berry in the men’s triples against Chris New, Furmidge and Leleux, to take the title 23-9.

Furmidge and Leleux had no better result in the Mixed Triples. Joined by Bernard they led before Ronnie Berry, Ian Morey and Mortlock took control of the match to score a 19-14 success.

The ladies’ over 60 singles was a competitive encounter involving Gay Allen and Annie Morris, with Allen taking it 21-15.

In the men’s over 60s singles Cawdell recorded a 21-7 victory over John Carrett, and there was the same shot win for Clive Wade against Ron Bavin in the Mixed over 75s singles.

IW Car Club members’ Botanic thrills n’ spills

Cowes Sports 3 Bemerton Heath Harlequins 0 Player-manager John McKie led by example as Cowes Sports took a massive step in their bid to avoid relegation from the Wessex League, Premier Division.

Before the game, McKie claimed this would be Yachtsmen’s biggest game in several years, as they and Bemerton tried to steer clear of the drop zone. And within the first six minutes McKie settled nerves by scoring twice to put his side on their way to three crucial points.

The boss enthused: “It was a great win for us, and

probably the first time this season that everything fell into place for us. The first goal came after three minutes, and that seemed to settle everyone down, and then we managed to get another three minutes later.”

McKie’s opener came from a through ball by Gareth Bricknell and his second was from a long clearance by keeper Ed Hatt, which Connor Furmidge helped on, and McKie ran on to score.

“There was a lot of excitement before kick-

off and everyone was so focused, but you just have to be careful how you manage that,” said McKie. “We used it in a positive way, and it seemed to give everyone that extra bit of energy. Every time I have asked the lads to step up, they have responded and used it well.”

After the two early goals, the Yachtsmen remained in control, keeping up a high tempo, and victory was wrapped up late on when sub Jimmy Wykes scored in his first game back after a longterm groin injury.

McKie said: “Bemerton were pushing for a goal before our third, and if they had scored it could have been a nervous last few minutes, so we always needed that extra goal.”

The Yachtsmen are away to Hamble tomorrow (Sat) with McKie saying: “They are a big strong side, and it is always a difficult place to go. So we have to be on our game, and we know we are now getting close to safety, so anything we can get will be vital.”

The unique event encouraged current members to bring some exciting cars out of storage and entice new members to have a go.

Class One cars, unmodified and under 1400cc. saw Steve Glass drive his MGZR to this class win pipping Hanna Thomson by only a few seconds. Hanna, however, was awarded fastest lady and also faster than Brian Robbins and Dan Young who were also driving her car.

Class Two was for unmodified cars over 1400cc and Dean Long in his MX5 was a joy to watch.

Dean was unable to accept his class winner’s award as he went home to kindly lend his van and trailer to the Lower family as their car had

suffered irreparable damage during the last run. They had made the trip to the Isle of Wight from the mainland in the car they were competing in and were stuck with no way of getting home.

As a small compensation, Lower claimed Class Four honours and third place on the podium before the car was damaged.

Class Three went to Adam Greenen in his classic Mini.

Class 5 is the domain of the specials and Lowcost cars, but Michael Marrison in his Puma-powered Fiesta again wowed onlookers by out-performing other more performance orientated cars and finishing in fifth place overall. Chris Wilson took the second step of the podium, and with a huge lead, taking the class and overall win as Ryan Munt.

Young guns pick up experience in defeat

East Cowes Vics were denied victory at Whitchurch at the weekend when the home side levelled with the last kick of the game.

Vics manager Steve Brougham admitted the late setback felt more like a defeat for his side, who had battled back from two goals down to take a deserved lead.

After Vics found themselves trailing, they began to discover the touch that has taken them well inside the top half of the Wessex League, Division One table. Joe Butcher scored twice, and Jimmi Burton also found the net to edge them in front, and three points looked the likely outcome, before Whitchurch’s last-gasp equaliser.

Brougham said: “Once we pulled one goal back we looked the better side, and although in the end it felt like a loss, I think when we were two goals down early in the second period we would probably have settled for a draw. Perhaps we were just as bit naive, and needed how to see the game out.

But we showed a bit of fight, and it’s always a good point away from home.”

Vics will be looking to consolidate their position tomorrow (Sat) when they take on Petersfield Town at Beatrice Avenue, kick off 3pm.

Although Newport slipped to defeat at Verwood last weekend, manager Andy Sampson was not too disappointed by the performance from his understrength side.

The Port started with six players aged 18 or under, including the whole of their defence, and Verwood scored twice in three minutes to go in 2-0 up at half time. Joe Craig pulled a goal back, and as the Port pressed for an equaliser they were caught on the break on 84 minutes.

Although Jordan Browne reduced the lead, the Island side were unable to find a leveller.

were down to the bare bones because of injuries, and only had 11 players. But at least some of the lads who hadn’t been playing got a full 90 minutes under their belts.

We conceded a couple of soft goals in the first half, and fairly early in the second period Ryan Hughes picked up an ankle injury, so we had to play for more than half an hour with only 10 men.

Considering we were a very young team, I thought we did well, and could have got something out of the game.

We made Verwood work for their win.”

Newport are at Ringwood tomorrow (Sat), and at home to Hythe and Dibden on Tuesday evening, 7.45pm kick off.

A total of 16 Bembridge ‘Illusionists’ lined up for the first day of this year’s Stratton Spring Plate. After fierce two-day competition, Mark Downer retained the Plate for the second year running with Julia Bailey second, a point ahead of Jo Downer.

In the first race of opening day, Rolly Wilson, back for his first race of the season, rounded the windward mark well ahead of the rest. But sadly for Rolly he misunderstood the ‘change of course sound signal’ but he took it in good spirit as he lost his lead to Philip Russell, Rosie Gosling and Jo Downer.

The second race saw Mark Downer just ahead of Julia Bailey and Jo Downer. On the second round, Downer extended his lead while the two ladies battled it out for second and third place. In the end Jo Downer got ahead to take second with Bailey third. In the final race of the day. Rosie Gosling and Mark Downer led round the windward mark and with no sign of the breeze picking back up again, the race was concluded after two rounds with Downer picking up his second win of the day.

There were 17 enthusiastic

sailors the following day, and first to round was John Raymond with Mark Downer in hot pursuit, however on the run to the leeward gate Raymond was swamped by the chasing fleet. On the second round, Downer took over the lead with Russell, Christie and Speare-Cole close behind, but Downer extended his lead for another win.

It was ‘champagne sailing’ for the third race of the day with Bailey first to appear with the two Downers not far behind. But with Bailey having a problem, Downer went through for his third win of the day. In a fourth race, Downer was again first to round the windward mark, with Daniels and Bailey not far behind. But in the end Downer finished well ahead.

Saturday, April 6 sees the St George’s Day Trophy with the Woodford Long Distance race on the Sunday.

Vics taking it on the chin as Newport chase pot of gold Newport 5 East Cowes Vics 1 Newport eased into the final of the Isle of Wight Gold Cup, leaving Steve Brougham, manager of rivals East Cowes Vics, gracious in defeat.

The Port raced into a threegoal interval lead in the midweek semi-final clash at Westwood Park, virtually ending any hopes of a Vics comeback.

Delighted Port manager Andy Sampson said: “It was a superb victory, and we performed really well virtually throughout. We controlled the first half and took our chances well, although at the start of the second half we were a bit sluggish. It’s great for the club to be in the final again.”

The clash between the two Island sides, who are in the top half of Division One of the Wessex League, proved more one-sided than expected. Vics boss Brougham accepted: “We didn’t turn up for the first half, and Newport played well, so it was all but over at half time.

“We played much better for the first 20 minutes of the second half, and got a goal back, and we had a couple of chances that would have made it interesting if we had put them away.

“But we just have to take it on the chin, and move on, because they deserved the win. But I’m not moaning at

my players, because we are having a good season, and now we have got to finish as high as we can, and the best Vics have finished for quite a few years.”

Port were ahead inside seven minutes through Jordan Browne, and increased their advantage 10 minutes later when Joe Craig latched onto a through ball from the impressive Connor Kelly.

Just three minutes later, Kelly turned scorer, hitting a shot that was blocked near the line only for the assistant referee to judge that the ball had crossed the line.

On the half hour Jimmi Burton caught Jacob Reynolds' ankle when challenging for the ball, and the young Newport defender was stretchered off, to be replaced by Jared Cousins.

Vics got back into the game, albeit temporarily, in the 60th minute, when Joe Butcher scored, but 15 minutes later, a Craig header from a Kelly cross restored Newport’s three-goal lead, and seven minutes from time Browne got his second when he headed home another Kelly cross, but also took one on the chin, from an accidental kick by Vics defender Ollie West. Newport will now play Cowes Sports, Pan Sport or Whitecross and Barton in the final.
