Bonnie Vanderberg volunteered with and was inspired by the original Micah’s Backpack in Blacksburg, Virginia. THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON I’VE INTERVIEWED THIS MONTH Described by the New York Times as an artist “who takes a backseat to no one,” Ulysses Owens Jr. is a Grammy award-winning jazz virtuoso and premier drummer. He’s also the founder of Don’t Miss A Beat, a local nonprofit Owens and his family founded in Jacksonville in 2008 to help kids through learning music. Growing up in the Crystal Springs area of Jacksonville’s Westside, Ulysses was introduced to music early on. He started playing drums at just two years old and his mother, Gwendolyn, soon enrolled him in classical piano lessons. In high school, Ulysses attended the Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, where he became part of the school’s inaugural jazz program and graduated with a full scholarship to the Juilliard School. Don’t Miss A Beat is his way of giving back to the First Coast. “In other cultures, I saw so many arts programs for kids,” Ulysses said. “I thought we really needed something like this back home.” DMAB programming includes the performing arts, academic enrichment, and civic engagement as well as job skills training for parents. BUZZ: What brought you to Jacksonville? ZC: I’m a 5th generation lifelong resident. BUZZ: Where did you attend law school? ZC: Florida Coastal School of Law. BUZZ: What is your specific field of law? ZC: Real Estate law. BUZZ: How long have you practiced? ZC: Two years. BUZZ: How do clients benefit from your services? ZC:At our firm, they’re not only going to get the very best representation, but we also make it a point of catering to our clients’ needs. We don’t just provide legal services; we try to counsel them through each real estate transaction by personally walking them through any issues that may arise. BUZZ: How did you choose your particular field of law? ZC: It’s in my blood. My grandfather was a part of the Jacksonville Bar in 1964, handling both criminal and real estate cases and my uncle has been practicing real estate law since 1986, founding our firm in 1990. BUZZ: What is your greatest accomplishment as an attorney? ZC: My greatest accomplishment thus far would be handling a multi-million-dollar commercial transaction from start to finish. I was able to get involved with such a complex case at an early stage in my career to get exposed to the intricacies of such a transaction. My goal at the closing table is to always have two happy people: one happy they’re selling and one happy they’re buying. If a doughy disk of pepperoni-smattered delight is your thing, make sure to hit up the new Pieology in Nocatee. This fun franchise is a great place to get a personal pizza fix fast. The atmosphere here is modern and casual. Hungry patrons can create their own custom pies at the counter by picking their sauce, cheeses, meats, and fresh toppings, or select from seven of Pieology’s standards: Easy Cheesy, Classic Margherita,
Rustic Veggie, Smokin’ Buffalo Chicken, Hickory BBQ Chicken, Mad to Meat You, and my personal favorite, Alfredo’s Alfredo. It is comprised of olive oil, 3-cheese alfredo sauce, parmesan, mozzarella, garlic, mushrooms, artichokes, fresh basil, grape tomatoes, and black pepper. I added sundried tomatoes and Kalamata olives for just a touch of acidity and found that my 11.5” pie was perfect.
toppings fresh, and the price point amazing at only $8.45 for an 11.5” pie. So get creative and construct your own munchable masterpiece at Pieology. Your wallet and your appetite will most certainly thank you!
These thin crust rounds are ideal for a meal – not a carbo-overload, yet you’ll leave Pieology with a satisfied stomach and an appeased palate. Now this place for saucy pie also has some great salads and a couple of sweets. I ordered the Classic salad, which was full of great, organic greenery, but also some of the fun stuff. This entrée had delicious goodies such as gorgonzola, dried cranberry, candied walnuts, and chicken, only to be accompanied by a light raspberry vinaigrette. At only 700-ish calories, this is a hearty alternative to Pieology’s more crusty creations. I also was a big fan of the new Chocolate Chip Churro Dessert Pizza – my thighs were not, but I was to be sure! Overall, I enjoyed this crisp and clean spot. The service was exceptional, fast and friendly, pizza

When you first spot the Son of a Butcher truck, you’re struck by the bright yellow paint job with a sunglasses-wearing bull decorating both sides. After just a cursory glance of the menu, you’ll be hard-pressed to find something that doesn’t make your mouth water. This intrepid reporter went with their pride and joy: Jacksonville’s Best Original Philly paired with their garlic and parmesan fries. The sandwich features thinly sliced ribeye steak and grilled onions topped with cheese whiz. Their idea of “thinlysliced” differs from what most of us might be used to. This is certainly no paper-thin “steakums” monstrosity. Quite the contrary, in fact. While still thin enough to be easily cooked and chopped into the sandwich, the steak is thick enough that you still know you’re eating steak, and high quality steak at that. Randy Leibl, the co-owner and head cook, and his team take great pride in serving only fresh, top quality products to their customers. The garlic and parmesan fries are the stuff legends are made of. They’re paired with the creamy concoction for dipping, Brutus sauce. Randy said he tried cutting each load of fries to order at first, but that proved too time-consuming in a business where speed is essential. If you like a little surf with your turf, try their shrimp Po’ boy or a variation of their Philly known as the Mayport S.O.B. This features the same ribeye with grilled fresh Mayport shrimp, loaded down with lettuce, tomato, grilled peppers and onions, and topped with provolone cheese. All in all, the Son of a Butcher is a prime cut for lunch or dinner.

DIRECTIONS
Heat about 4 tablespoons of olive oil in large skillet over medium-high heat. Put flour in shallow bowl. Dip shrimp in egg mixture and add to skillet cut-side down; fry, turning until lightly browned, about 3 Whisk 4 eggs with minutes. Transfer to paper towels to drain. Pour out 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper, any oil from skillet. Don’t wipe skillet. Melt 2 sticks and 1 tablespoon of of butter in skillet. Squeeze fresh lemon into melted butter. Add shrimp. Cook only about 1 minute. Serve parsley in bowl. over spaghetti.

History at the Thrasher-Horne Center
T
hrasher-Horne Center first opened its doors on the St. Johns River State College Orange Park campus in 2004. With a 1,725 seat mainstage, smaller studio theatre, conference center, and art gallery, the Thrasher-Horne Center presents the very best of professional music, theatre, and dance to diverse audiences of all ages in Northeast Florida. Under the guidance of Executive Director Denton Yockey, Thrasher-Horne Center has taken a new direction in programming that has seen a 60 percent increase in new attendees over the past year. Along with concerts and family entertainment, Thrasher-Horne Center also inaugurated a new theatrical series called Broadway Orange Park. Now in its second season, Broadway Orange Park will include the launch of the national tour of “Into the Woods” as well as “Avenue Q,” “Xanadu” and the farewell tour of “Mamma Mia!” Over 200 events are held in the conference center each year including meetings, receptions, business expos, and weddings. So many people share special moments at the Thrasher-Horne Center. BUZZ: What are you most excited about in your upcoming season? Sarah Boone: As always, we look forward to discovering the talents of our community through our open audition process. The most exciting thing for me is watching the creative process unfold. Our annual event in April is with Elizabeth Gilbert, bestselling author of “Eat, Pray, Love” who will be talking about her newest book. BUZZ: What makes your theatre unique? SB: With our 100-year anniversary fast approaching, we have the distinction of being the oldest continuously producing community theatre in Florida and one of the oldest in the country. Our San Marco Square playhouse is on the national registry of historic buildings and is the only facility in Jacksonville where volunteers can have hands-on experience.

BUZZ: What makes your theatre unique? Numa Saisselin: In 1927 when this theatre opened, there were five other theatres on Forsyth Street between here and Hogan, including the Savoy, Empress, Imperial, Palace, and St. Johns Theatres. The Florida Theatre is the only one left. We’re lucky to have it, and I’d say that makes us unique. BUZZ: How did you choose next season’s offerings? NS: Some of them are selected because of the financial imperative of operating a 2,000 seat historic theatre, and I’m pretty sure that everyone knows I would be lying if I tried to make anyone think otherwise. But some of them are selected just because we think they’re that extraordinary, and should be seen in Jacksonville. Savion Glover, the Tony Award winning tap dancer and choreographer, on November 18 is one of them. You don’t think you want to see that, but you do. Interview with Ben Steinfeld, director of “Into The Woods” By: Josh Henderson
Fiasco Theater’s acclaimed production, “Into the Woods” is launching its national tour at the Thrasher-Horne Center on November 26 at 8 p.m. We spoke with Ben Steinfeld, one of the directors of the production. BUZZ: How long have you guys been putting on “Into The Woods?” Ben Steinfeld: The first time we did it was in 2013. BUZZ: Why did you decided to direct this play? BS: Our company, Fiasco Theatre, had built a reputation of doing Shakespeare, and in a lot of those Shakespeare, we would do music. We realized how much we enjoyed doing that. So we thought, what if we took this ensemble way of creating productions that we’ve done with classical theatre and brought that to a musical? BUZZ: What are some messages or lessons an audience member can take away from seeing this production? BS: One of the big messages of the show is contained in the song “No One is Alone.” The big message of the show is that we all are connected, and we all are implicated in each other lives. If we focus too much on our individual ambitions, wants, and needs, we will lose the sense that we are all part of a bigger story than just our own lives. We are a part of an interconnected interdependent community. BUZZ: What are some of your favorite songs that are performed? BS: I have so many favorites, it’s hard to say. I love all the songs in the show really. Since January 2016, the Jacksonville Film & Television Office has permitted and assisted 37 productions. From these projects, 385 jobs were created, with an economic impact totaling nearly $1 million. Several music videos amounted to $375,000 of the overall economic impact. There was also a television series titled “American Justice,” produced for the BBC. Thus far, this production had shot for 133 days. In addition, Jake Mills Productions of New York City produced a major photography shoot for Lincoln Continental. Locations included Stinson Park in Ortega, Guana Reserve, and a Ponte Vedra residence. The 14-day production had an approximate $280,000 economic impact. The Film Office’s mission is to build job creation in the local film and digital media community, and to act as the liaison between government, local community, and the production company. In addition, they aim to streamline the production process, and recognize the tremendous economic impact the industry has local vendors and professionals.
Beth Haizlip A native of Charleston, South Carolina, Beth Darby Haizlip is a versatile and multi-talented artist. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Florida Southern College. Working in a variety of media, Haizlip approaches her work with enthusiasm, skill, and vibrant colors. She has been painting for over 30 years. Her career turning point was when her artwork was chosen for the Jacksonville Jazz poster in 2007. She maintains her studio in her home at Fleming Island. Her work is at First Street Gallery in Neptune Beach, Great Hang Ups in Fleming Island, and Art Center Cooperative at the Jacksonville Landing. “My goal is for my paintings to stir excitement in the soul and bring great joy to the spirit of the viewer,” Haizlip said. “I accomplish this by using very colorful impressionistic strokes that makes the painting more interesting, and not like you are viewing a photograph.” View Haizlip’s artwork at BethHaizlip.com or contact her at (904) 535-9525.

What started out as a remedy turned into Jared Patterson’s passion. Patterson opened his studio in 2014 after Pilates nursed him back from a running injury.
Neely Hufnagel has found it in Pilates. Owner of Pilates On 3rd in Jacksonville Beach, Hufnagel wants the muscular strength that comes from Pilates, but she adds her own twist on it. “I take the Pilates concept and integrate it with a little more of a fitness routine. People leave here sweating,” Hufnagel said of her 50-minute classes like High Intensity Pilates and Pilates Blast. “It gives people variety,” she said. “People don’t get bored here.”
WHAT IS PILATES? An exercise method that develops strength and flexibility with an emphasis on core stability. Workouts consist of controlled, flowing movements that work muscles through full range of motion.
WHAT TYPES OF PILATES ARE THERE? Mat Pilates on the floor or Reformer Pilates.
WHAT EQUIPMENT IS USED? No weights are used and personal body weight acts as resistance. A Reformer machine is sometimes used to increase resistance.

Headstrong Boxing, located in Jacksonville Beach, is home to several professional boxers on the First Coast including Nate Campbell, Curt “The Hurt” Harper, and Bobby “The Technician” Wallace. The gym first opened in 2008 and offers training to those seeking to learn the sweet science for improvement in either the realm of the own personal lives or for the hope at reaching the big stage in world of professional boxing.
Giles Wiley opened Jacksonville Muay Thai to establish the first true Muay Thai training facility on the First Coast. Jacksonville Muay Thai has approximately 80 students and five coaches. Giles strives to make his gym a family friendly places focusing on the true nature of Muay Thai as a Thailand art form dedicated to balance and maintaining composure.

Local trainer and professional boxer, Bobby Wallace started in boxing from a basic need in self-defense. He got involved with the Police Athletic League in Jacksonville twelve years ago and the rest is history. Wallace admitted he didn’t like fighting at first, but quickly discovered that he had a natural talent for it. He wanted to find a sport that would challenge him both mentally and physically. He found his answer in a pair of gloves and a heavy bag. He believes that the regulars in the gym value the fun and gain self-confidence while training. The gym sees about 20 to 30 regulars a day who come in to get a hard workout and lay down some leather. They develop their boxing skills through a team mentality and atmosphere.
“I love seeing people feel accomplished after training hard, while learning and reaching their goals,” said Wallace. The team works together to develop people into the best physical condition possible. If they want to step into the ring after that then they have the support from the coaches. Bobby said one of the things he enjoys the most about Headstrong Boxing is that it is operated as a family and feels like its run by the local community.
“We’re a family, we’re all seeking to help one another out regardless of ability, strength, or skill,” said Wallace. “We’re a family keeping the love of the sport alive in Jax.” Headstrong Boxing is planning to start hosting ProAm exhibition matches in the near future which may be tied to various charities, but those details have not been finalized at this time. Master Moore has been active in martial arts since 1988 and currently holds a seventh degree black belt. His passion is driven by the students and what they get out of the experience. The Jacksonville native and former Bolles swimmer was one of the stars of the 2016 Olympics. Murphy won three gold medals. He also set a world record with his backstroke split in the medley relay, and that last relay gold will also be remembered for Michael Phelps’ final Olympic swim.
The former Bolles swimmer from Clay High School finished his first Olympics with two gold medals and a sixth place finish. Dressel won two gold medals on relay teams and his sixth place finish came in the 100-meter freestyle in Rio.

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: Three-time
Grammy winners and multi-platinum artists, Zac Brown Band have become one of music’s most heralded acts. Their latest gold-certified album, “JEKYLL + HYDE” marks the band’s third consecutive No. 1 debut album on the Billboard 200 chart. Together with their three platinum-selling albums, the band has sold over 8 million albums to date. They have also earned a historic series of fourteen No. 1 hit radio singles. Zac Brown is a record producer, record label head, and philanthropist, set on making the world a better place for as many people as possible. With his combination of bluegrass, reggae, country, and Caribbean music, he
appeals to a vast variety and demographic of fans. He sold over 30,000 copies of the first two self-produced albums he made for his own Southern Ground label. “Chicken Fried,” the Zac Brown Band’s first single to get national distribution, went platinum with over a million downloads. His first nationally distributed album, “The Foundation,” sold 300,000 copies within weeks of its release in late 2008. STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: Sarah Jarosz and Parker Millsap will both showcase their performances in Jacksonville. Both performers are known for having amazing live shows and huge influences of folk within their musical sound. Sarah Jarosz is a singer-songwriter from Austin, Texas. Her first album, “Song Up in Her Head” was released in 2009 and the song “mansinneedof” was nominated for a Grammy Award. Her second album, “Follow Me Down” released in 2011, received a “Song of the Year” nomination from the Americana Music Association. Throughout her career, Jarosz has been described as a contemporary-bluegrass prodigy. Parker Millsap is a singer-songwriter and multiinstrumentalist from Purcell, Oklahoma. Millsap plays a blend of blues, country, alternative-country/Americana, and folk music. He was named one of the Americana
Music Association’s 2014 Emerging Artists of the Year after the release of his self-titled album. Millsap gained attention with his single, “Truck Stop Gospel,” which has been featured on NPR’s music program, “The Record.” Playing with childhood friend, Michael Rose on bass, and Daniel Foulks on the fiddle, Parker plays guitar with a style that has drawn comparisons to Elvis. He also plays the harmonica and slide guitar. He attributes his musical influence to growing up in a Pentecostal Church and listening to blues with his parents. He has opened for Patty Griffin, Old Crow Medicine Show, Shovels & Rope, Lake Street Dive, John Fullbright, and Jason Isbell.

The Bands of Oktoberfest ONE STEP AHEAD OF THE LAW BRASS BAND The One Step Ahead of the Law Brass Band brings the music of the Munich beer halls to our friends here on the First Coast. With a dazzling array of music from traditional polka to contemporary German hits, they are a Musical Brigands best suited for Oktoberfest. Band members include Cliff Newton, Phillip Newton, Dennis Hunsicker, and Richard Spruill. After retiring from the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra after 32 years as Principal Trumpet, Cliff Newton co-founded the polka/ oompah ensemble, One Step Ahead of the Law Brass Band, also known as Edelweiss Piraten. In addition to multiple endeavors, he also provides live music for both private and public functions since 1978 through his family business, Newton Musical. Enjoy the One Step Ahead of the Law Brass Band, Jacksonville’s premier Bavarian party band. AUSTIN PARK Austin Park is a modern pop country rock band from Jacksonville, formed by singer/ songwriter Jeff Congo and drummer Tim Crawford. Whether performing at festivals, clubs or corporate events, or as direct support for a major act, the audience can expect a high energy, interactive experience they are sure to engage in and build lasting memories! Since forming in 2005, the band has performed over 1,000 shows, performing in venues like Tootsies Word Famous Orchid Lounge in Nashville, The Jacksonville Landing in Jacksonville and GTMO Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and has provided direct support for a list of national recording artists. After signing with Grey Area Management in 2013, a mid-summer trip performing a showcase at the Tootsies Word Famous Orchid Lounge in Nashville proved a worthwhile trip. Shortly after, the band signed with ZOD Lounge Productions and began working with many well-known Nashville songwriters such as Scott Fairclough (Lifehouse), Jeffrey East (Dierks Bentley), Kevin Terry (Martina McBride), on songs for their debut CD. Their lead-off song, titled “Life in Dixie” (Congo, Faircloth), gained major market radio airplay on Georgia’s Z94.5 FM. Their follow-up single, “12 Ticks to Midnight,” can also be heard spinning on Jacksonville’s 99.1 FM WQIK. Their debut album titled, “Invisible” will be available for release on October 15th and will credit Scott Fairclough (Lifehouse), Sal Oliveri (Carrie Underwood, P!nk, Brett Eldridge) and Mills Logan (Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, Cole Swindell).
THE SWINGING BAVARIANS The Swinging Bavarians is a German Bavarian band based in Central Florida that performs in authentic and traditional Bavarian attire known as Lederhosen, that’s right, leather pants! In fact, their entire wardrobe has been imported from Germany and Austria. Bill Schoenfeldt, the leader of the band, was also imported, born in Nürnberg, Germany. He started the group with his brothers and close family friends, and now the band has grown to include his three adult children. The Swinging Bavarians play all the favorite and traditional songs of the Oktoberfest season as well as a wide variety of musical styles for all audiences to enjoy! Besides the traditional music, the Swinging Bavarians offer a complete Bavarian show including: 1. Authentic Bavarian Schuhplattler dancing. 2. Authentic Alpine yodeling and singing in both German and English. 3. Playing of the authentic Austrian cowbells. 4. Audience participation, such as the ever popular “Chicken Dance,” line dances, and numerous tunes that are sure to get the crowd involved. Plus, certain band members and dancers will go out onto the dance floor to help audience members get involved. 5. Audience sing-a-longs, such as the famous “Ein Prosit, Der Gemütlichkeit” and many other ‘Beer Drinking Tunes,’ too numerous to mention, will have the audience swaying back and forth. DJ E.L. DJ E.L. began training to be a radio DJ in 1994 at a high school radio station. He attended Vincennes University for broadcasting in 1995. That’s where a friend showed DJ E.L. how to blend, mix, and scratch vinyl. The destination for Spring Break 1996 was Jacksonville, Florida. That was the moment DJ E.L. chose to make being a DJ more than just a hobby. DJ E.L. has had the honor to share the stage with a wide variety of artists such as: Bill Murray, O.A.R, The Band Perry, Darius Rucker, Travie McCoy, Steve Azar, Magic, DJ Enferno (Madonna’s Tour DJ), Aaron Lewis, and many more. As you can see from the artists mentioned, DJ E.L. is a multi-genre entertainer.
