THIS WILD LIFE

Turn it UP

“I thought I was one of the rebels in the drum line.” -Kevin Jordan

Bands to be on the lookout for

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: Kevin Jordan and Anthony Del Grosso knew the punk rock rulebook backwards and forwards. The duo behind This Wild Life grew up doing exactly what’s expected of kids growing up in the tightknit DIY scene in Long Beach – avoiding MTV and the radio, attending punk shows at Chain Reaction, the ear gauges, the tattoos. And of course, they started their own pop-punk band. They played fast, they played loud and they didn’t stand out from the crowd until they did the least “punk” thing possible. It was also bolder than anything in the punk rock rulebook: they got quiet. Having just completed a successful, first run in the UK, This Wild Life is taking the songs of Clouded on the 2014 Warped Tour, where they’ll play alongside peers and heroes such as The Story So Far, Yellowcard and Real Friends. Newly signed to legendary punk label Epitaph, they’re now within the lineage of the kind of uncompromising bands they grew up listening to. Because even if This Wild Life doesn’t sound like hardcore punk, they make accessible, honest music that speaks to the kind of kids they were growing up – “bands that can play softer music, but tour with heavier bands…that’s how we view ourselves.”

TREVOR HALL STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: Trevor Hall realized at a very young age that music was more than just a passion. As an eleven year old, playing harmonica beside his father in the cradle of the weeping willows of South Carolina, music quickly became his most intimate companion, guide and creative outlet. In his elementary years, he began to write his own songs and perform them locally. At sixteen he recorded his first record, and the following year he left South Carolina to study classical guitar at Idyllwild Arts Academy, an international boarding school east of Los Angeles. There, Trevor was introduced to yoga and certain spiritual practices found in India, which greatly influenced his music and his life journey. During his senior year, Trevor signed a record deal with Geffen Records and his career as a musician formally began.

SOKOLINSKI

Trevor Hall’s music – an eclectic mix of acoustic rock, reggae and Sanskrit chanting – echo with the names and teachings of divinities, while maintaining an incredibly and refreshingly universal message. While on the road, Trevor sees the stage as his moving temple, a place where he can share in the experience of his spiritual journey with his audience. Trevor’s annual trips to India also continue to serve as a source of creativity and motivation for his music. The precious lessons and experiences that he has harvested from his journeys East have moved Trevor to return a service to those whom have colored his music and his life so beautifully. Trevor uses donations collected at his live shows to help support an ashram in Allahabad, India, the home of his Guru, where underprivileged and orphaned boys and girls are given the chance at a better life and a traditional Vedic education.

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: CATCH THEM LIVE AT: October 12th at Freebird Live Sokolinski was born in Bordeaux, France. She has used the nickname Soko as long as she can remember. Sokolinski left home at 16, quit school and moved to Paris to start acting class with Eva St. Paul where she studied for one year; she then resumed her education at several different schools, but quickly became tired of it and dropped out. She later appeared in several French films and began to write songs.

As a live performer, she is unpredictable and never uses a set list; her backing band consists mostly of different friendmusicians at each show. She sometimes plays up to 3 hours by herself, in intimate and quiet venues. Her début album- entitled I Thought I Was An Alien was released in February 2012 following the singles “I Thought I Was An Alien” and “First Love Never Die.” In 2014, Soko’s song “We Might Be Dead by Tomorrow,” from the 2012 album, was featured in the viral video “First Kiss,” which has garnered over 63 million views and debuted at number 9 in the Billboard Hot 100. Her second Studio Album “My Dreams Dictate My Reality” is set to be released sometime in 2014.

LAWLESS HEARTS “Instead of doing a full album of 10-15 songs we want to give something more, something with meaning. We are releasing three EP’s to be taken more as a book trilogy; ergo each EP will have 4-5 songs that chronologically will tell an entire story.” –Lawless Hearts

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

With Lawless Hearts, Innovation is needed more than imitation. Our dream is not stay in the past with our music, but bring forth together our classic and new age appreciation to make something completely our own. Something wholly satisfying with diverse styles reminiscent of Bon Jovi, Guns N Roses, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Foofighters, The Black Crowes, Led Zeppelin, and so on; so you get an eclectically awesome sound. We firmly believe you can’t dream without hope, and you can’t hope for something without dreaming up something bigger than yourself. After all a song always starts with an idea, a moment of clarity in all the chaos. And we want to be that moment of clarity for everyone.
