THE MIRACLE WORKER

Theatre Jacksonville TheatreJax.org

Immortalized onstage and screen by Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke, this classic tells the story of Annie Sullivan and her student, blind and mute Helen Keller. Trapped in a secret, silent world and unable to communicate, Helen is violent, spoiled, almost sub-human and treated by her family as such. Only Annie realizes that there is a mind and spirit waiting to be rescued from the dark, tortured silence. With scenes of intense physical and emotional dynamism, Annie’s success with Helen finally comes with the utterance of a single, glorious word: “water.”

The event is hosted by Parrot Heads in Natural Settings (PHINS), a community organization that embraces everything Jimmy Buffet – good food, great music, and philanthropy. 6

The Most Interesting Person I’ve Interviewed This Month The Middle Passage is the second leg of the Triangular Trade between Europe, Africa and the New World.

First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross

Millions of Africans were kidnapped and brought to America under horrific conditions in that Middle Passage; many died during the trip. Until recently, their deaths had been lost to history.

Enter Jacksonville’s Ann Chinn, the founder of the Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Markers Project. Chinn has been the driving force behind the effort to create dozens of documented sites along the Eastern Seaboard marking the spot where slaves arrived. Recently, a marker was unveiled in St. Augustine to commemorate the Middle Passage as a way to present the history of the transatlantic human trade and provide a means for addressing a painful and shameful part of the American experience.

Hope at Hand HopeAtHand.org

Hope at Hand provides art and poetry therapy to underserved populations. Using creativity, language, art and therapeutic approaches, we facilitate healing and personal growth to struggling populations with limited resources. People who are struggling through difficult situations, chronically ill, or isolated by circumstances beyond their control may not even know that they want to express their frustration, dreams, and hope to a supportive community. Hope at Hand can help.

“The installation of historic markers at the forty-one Middle Passage arrival ports publicly designates these places as crucial points where the lives of European and African people intersected.” Says Chinn, “The installation of historic markers at the forty-one Middle Passage arrival ports publicly designates these places as crucial points where the lives of European and African people intersected to form what would become the United States.” Learn more at www.middlepassageproject.org. An interview with a leader in the Jacksonville community

DR. SHELDON KAPLAN, PHD. “A Leader Helping Our Children Achieve Stability and Success” Licensed Psychologist specializing in Child and Adolescent Psychology

BUZZ: Was it always your goal to become a

child psychologist? Tell us about your journey.

Dr. Kaplan: As a young teen, I remember how interested I was in how people thought and felt and why they did what they did. As an undergraduate, one of my courses allowed me to work with children who were developmentally, behaviorally and emotionally challenged. That experience awakened me to the struggles children experience growing up. I’ve been able to work with diverse populations of children and parents to help them resolve their clinically significant challenges to achieve emotional stability and success. BUZZ: You were one of the leaders recognized at the Legacy of Leaders dinner and in the Portrait of Leadership Gallery that was held at Ocean 60. What does being a “leader” mean to you? Dr. Kaplan: In my opinion, the two major goals we all have in life is to make

ourselves better people and make the world a better place. By assuming a leadership role, we accomplish both goals. I am so humbled and honored to be recognized as one of the 2014 Legacy of Leaders.

BUZZ: What advice would you leave future leaders? Dr. Kaplan: We as leaders have to make a difference to those we serve. People

THEATRE IN THE KNOW

Ian Clarkson – vocals and trumpet, The Jive Aces JiveAces.com

BUZZ: What are some of the songs that The Jive Aces will be performing in your upcoming show?

IC: We will, of course, be featuring “Bring Me Sunshine,” which has become our theme due to the viral music video. Also, our new single and music video track “La Dolce Vita.” I’m sure that we’ll perform a few Louis Prima tunes as he is one of our major influences, such as “Just a Gigolo.” We also have some new songs and a couple of explosive show numbers. BUZZ: What are some of the major changes the band has faced in the decade you’ve been together? IC: We have always travelled a lot but the rise of the Internet,

YouTube and Facebook has led to us having a big fan base all over the world. It’s brought us to Russia, Morocco, Bulgaria, Latvia and now this tour of the U.S.!

BUZZ: Do any members of the band have a unique talent that’s not music-related? IC: We do spend most of our time playing music, performing and touring, but we have

hobbies, too. Most of us swing dance a little and Ken, the bass player, won a contest years ago – London swing dance champion! I also do some fencing, but there is little time for it nowadays. Vince the pianist does a little judo. Big John plays the bag pipes and that’s how my ukulele madness started! Performing Mar. 13 at Thrasher-Horne Center for the Arts

Players By The Sea Players by the Sea Triples the Fun in March with Three Fresh Comedy Events! March 6 - 7: “I’ll Give You a Day” – Written & performed by Derek Coghlan. Our favorite Irish raconteur returns to Players’ Studio Stage with a brand-new one-man show based on his adventures growing up in the middle of nowhere in Ireland and immigrating to America. You’ll laugh at culture shock, small town Southern life, guilt, unemployment, funerals and the wonderfully odd characters he meets along the way. March 19 - 21: “[title of show]” – The musical without a name! Limelight Theatre’s acclaimed production of “[title of show]” travels from St. Augustine to the PBTS Main Stage for a special three-night run. This delightful musical directed by Christopher Pritchard follows the artistic and personal struggles of two writers racing against a deadline to create an original show for a theatre festival. March 26 - 29: “Almost, Maine” – A charming romantic comedy. In a series of amusing short scenes, residents of the tiny town of Almost, Maine, fall in and out of love in unexpected ways beneath the glimmer of the Northern Lights during the course of one cold, clear winter night. This popular comedy charmer is directed by PBTS Associate Director and Pelican Award-winner Bradley Akers on the Studio Stage and features a talented young ensemble. Admission is $15 for all performances; curtain is at 8 p.m. Sunday matinee March 29 starts at 2 p.m. For information and tickets, call (904) 249-0289 or log onto PlayersByTheSea.org. Theatre

Theater in the River City By Tamara McClaran, Northeast Florida Theater Enthusiast ABET PRESENTS “BLOOD BROTHERS” One of the most loved musicals of all time is coming to the Atlantic Beach Experimental Theatre. Willy Russell’s “Blood Brothers” will play March 13-29. The story is a gripping, emotional and sometimes comical tale of twin brothers from Liverpool who are separated at birth, only to be reunited by a twist of fate and a mother’s haunting secret. Dave Alan Thomas is directing. “Despite the serious tale, a lovely surprise in the script is the warmth and humor that wins over the audience,” Thomas said. Hailed by critics as one of the best musicals of all time, “Blood Brothers” is not your typical musical. It features an energetic score of pop-rock songs as well as a terrific script. “The music is unforgettable and deeply moving,” Thomas said. “Unlike some musicals, the scenes between the songs are just as strong as the songs; that makes for a well-rounded evening of theatre.” The cast includes Jennifer Clague Paulk as Mrs. Johnstone, Ryan Ikaika Arroyo and Hector Luis Gonzalez Toro as twin brothers Mickey and Edward respectively, Patti Rohman Menefee as Linda, and Alec Hadden as The Narrator, with musical direction by Zeek Smith. “Zeek is producing a vocal sound that is completely memorizing,” Thomas said. “I will be surprised if we don’t have a number of patrons who will come back for a second performance once they hear this cast perform this score.” Tickets are $20. ABET is located at 716 Ocean Blvd., Atlantic Beach. For reservations, visit ABETtheatre.com or call (904) 249-7177. 18

FASHION THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE RETHREADED

Rethreaded is a social entrepreneurship that is breaking the cycle of the sex trade by offering viable and creative work to those affected by the sex trade (i.e. prostitution, drug addiction and human trafficking). Rethreaded’s director, Kristin Keen, lived and worked for five years in Kolkata, India, encountering the life-stealing effects of the area’s sex trade on a daily basis. Together with her friend Sarah Lance, Kristin helped co-found a business that could offer these women a safe haven. Today, Sari Bari is a thriving business that employs more than 100 people in Kolkata who create beautiful handmade blankets and other products from traditional fabrics. Upon her return to Jacksonville, Kristin felt called to fight the sex trade on a local level, and Rethreaded was born. Beginning by forming relationships with women on the street and making prison visits, she knew the biggest need was for a safe, supportive work environment where these women could earn money while learning a skill and experiencing continued healing through community. Working in partnership with the City Rescue Mission, Rethreaded hired its first full-time employee in November 2012.

Rethreaded designs are created and chosen based on sales data and the performance of other items, as well as the amount of work it takes to manufacture their handmade pieces. The team uses Pantone colors to choose the color palette and keeps an eye on trends to help guide the creative process. Most items for sale are around $20-$40, which is a great price point considering that many of their items are handcrafted right here in Jacksonville.

DIGNITY U WEAR

Dignity U Wear distributes dignity in the form of brand new clothing. The organization’s goal is to distribute clothing in a way that maximizes the impact that clothing has on lives by collaborating with other great social service agencies. Dignity U Wear is headquartered in Jacksonville, but has a national presence. The main areas of focus are: • School Children: Removing a barrier to education by providing new clothing to school children in need. • Veterans: Providing work-appropriate clothing for veterans seeking employment and basic clothing necessities for those who have become homeless. • Women and Girls in Crisis: Helping women and girls who have suffered domestic violence, emotional and/or sexual abuse, or are at risk to drop out of school. To get an idea of the magnitude of the services Dignity offers, just look at the numbers. Through December 2014, Dignity U Wear has donated 8.8 million pieces of brand new clothing, valued at over $150 million, to more than 820,000 children, men and women. The clothing is donated by manufacturers, distributors and retailers and distributed to individuals through a network of 300+ nonprofit social service agencies in more than 42 states. A huge portion of these services is completed by volunteers! Dignity was founded in 2000 by philanthropist and Holocaust survivor, Henri Landwirth.

“I know what it means to stripped of personal dignity,” says Landwirth, “to not have clothes of one’s own and to give up all hope. When I see people suffering indignities, I know we have to help; and through Dignity U Wear, we do.” To learn more, visit DignityUWear.org 20

RENEE FIELDS

BUZZ was able to catch up with catch up with Renee Fields, the owner of Kennedi’s Closet, to learn more about how she started her own business.

BUZZ: How did you decide to open your own business?

Renee: I’ve always loved fashion. In college I thought

I would pursue a degree in fashion design, but I ended up becoming a teacher. Even though I got my degree in Education, I still wanted to do something with fashion. After my daughter, Kennedi, was born in 2009, I decided to pursue my dream and open my store. I was always spending money buying Kennedi clothes, so I started researching different brands, which got me into the world of children’s clothes.

BUZZ: What are your most popular items? Renee: Our monogrammed bloomers are one of our

most popular items. We specialize in monogrammed clothing and accessories for girls and boys. We monogram clothes, bags and just about anything. You can bring your own items in to get monogrammed or choose items from the store. We even do birthday outfits. You can bring in invitations and colors for the party and we can match an entire outfit for your child.

BUZZ: What are some fashion trends you see in children’s clothes?

Renee: Children’s fashion isn’t as hard as adults

because they can wear the same cute clothes every year and it isn’t noticeable. This year smocking is very popular for both boys and girls. To learn more about Kennedi’s Closet, visit kennediscloset.com or the storefront in Avondale.

Nothing pairs better with an ice-cold margarita or beer than a rich, spicy bowl of Louisiana’s signature stew – gumbo. Ten years ago, members of the local Parrot Head Club came to the same conclusion and created Jacksonville Gumbo Festival, a weekend-long event dedicated to the Creole classic. The event is hosted by Parrot Heads in Natural Settings (PHINS), a community organization that embraces everything Jimmy Buffet – good food, great music, and philanthropy. The 10th anniversary of the festival will kick off Friday evening at 8 p.m. with the Mango Margarita Band live at the Jacksonville Landing. The next morning, while partygoers recover from an evening of fun, chefs and cooks from across the South will be prepping for the Gumbo Festival Cook Off – the weekend’s marquee event. Saturday, teams of local restaurants, amateur cooks, and Buffet enthusiasts are challenged to create the tastiest pot of Louisiana’s finest with no restrictions. Some contestants choose to guard their family recipes while others boast of including gator tail, blue crab and other exotic ingredients. Ultimately, it’s up to the public to decide which pot trumps all others. Tasting begins at 1:30 p.m. in the heart of the Landing; tickets are available for purchase at JacksonvilleGumboFest.com and in person during the event. This is the second year that all proceeds from the weekend’s festivities will benefit the Mandarin Food Bank explained organizer Jeff Budd.

“Mandarin Food Bank has been there a long time; it’s an allvolunteer organization that gets support from their church, Catholic Corners. We were way impressed with their work. They’ll help you no matter where you are if you are hungry.” Last year, Jacksonville Gumbo Fest donated more than $10,000 to the local charity.

Grammy-winning musician John Mellencamp has touched the heart and souls of music listeners and influenced American Culture with enduring songs. He is also one of the most successful live concert performers in the world. In 2014, he signed a historic “lifetime recording contract” with Republic Records.

Why did you start Natural Life?

I actually didn’t mean to! I was playing with photography, making framed keepsakes for fun. Since I knew how the trade show market worked from past experiences, I signed up for a show and never looked back. I was having so much fun with every aspect of the business, it was more of a passion than a business. One day I realized I accidentally created a lifestyle brand. I guess I’m living my “natural life!”

What are some causes close to your heart that you support?

Girl Talk, More Than Me, The McKensie Wilson Foundation, and all the people of Jacksonville making the world a better place in some way!

Describe the perfect day.

Being outside in the fresh air, hanging out with friends and family, eating lots of yummy food, listening to live music, shopping in an artisan market, and watching kids have a blast running around and doing crafts! That actually sounds like the Community First Natural Life Music Festival! We love giving back to Jacksonville through our free festival; it’s the little things! 32

At the advice of a friend, the singer/songwriter/multiinstrumentalist holed up in the back room of his wood-nestled cabin studio with just a guitar, electric piano, bookshelf, notebook, tape recorder, and one 90-minute cassette and then wrote all winter long.

Since first landing on the scene in 1996, Nickelback have cemented themselves as one of the most commercially viable and important acts of the past two decades. The group’s worldwide sales exceed 50 million units, solidifying their status as the “eleventh best-selling music act” and second bestselling foreign act in the U.S. of the 21st century, behind only The Beatles.

ERIC CHURCH STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: After closing out 2014 with country music’s top-selling album, the Platinum-certified and genre-busting “The Outsiders,” Eric Church storms into 2015 with four Grammy nominations and a new addition to his widely successful Outsiders World Tour 2015.

“Eric Church is our greatest working rock star,” proclaimed Stereogum, referring to Church as “…. a down-home everyman whose conversational vocal delivery surges into something huge when it needs to and who comes off as a perfectly genuine human being even when leading the choreographed rigors of an arena show.” The Memphis Commercial Appeal predicted, “at this level, and on the strength of an album as sharp as ‘The Outsiders,’ Church is arguably both the mainstream country artist of the year and the mainstream rock artist of the year and his show made a case for that blend.” Church’s current album, “The Outsiders,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart and the Billboard Country Albums Chart earlier this year. “The Outsiders” is the follow-up to Church’s Platinum-certified album “Chief,” named the 2012 Album of the Year by both CMA and ACM, and Grammy-nominated for Best Country Album, which featured five Top 20 singles.

In 2013, Journey toured four continents and performed to more than half a million fans. “I can’t think of a better way for the Joker to celebrate his 40th and the Steve Miller Band to enjoy next summer than playing all our hits for all of our fans as we tour the entire U.S.A. with our brother San Francisco bands, Journey and the Tower Of Power,” says Steve Miller. “This is going to be a not-to-bemissed trifecta of the best of soul, greatest hits and arena rock by three of the greatest bands to come out of San Francisco, clearly a once in a life time event. The festival also features the best bikini contest on the river, SUP Race, Wakeboard slider jam, shuck’n contest and the oyster cook-off featuring the area’s premiere chefs rocking their best oyster that you get to judge! Nothing goes with oysters like cold beer such as Jacksonville’s Veterans United, Magic Hat, Blue Moon and more from the Miller lineup. The grills and tables are stocked with all the essentials for roasting or steaming your own oysters; but if you don’t know how to shuck like the locals, let one of our oyster ambassadors teach you. There are also oysters on the half shell and specialty oysters with bacon and cheese, including the famous Rockefeller style, all served by the Oyster Jam crew. If oysters aren’t your thing, don’t worry – local food trucks will be onsite with a variety of great eats and sweets to complete the experience. The $12 admission includes all-day access to the jam and, as a bonus, you’re admitted into the Southeast U.S. Boat Show to see all that’s going on in boating. The Murray Hill Theater, a 501(c) nonprofit, will be celebrating their 20th anniversary later this year! Some of us may remember when we were younger, it was the cool hangout where we could go and listen to some great music, inspirational messages, and overall be in a safe place. Murray Hill is still providing that atmosphere to this day. Flip Padilla runs the day-to-day operations of Murray Hill Theater. It began when he met Tony Nasrallah at a St. Johns Presbyterian Church function many years ago. Flip started out by volunteering at Murray Hill Theater. When the manager retired from Murray Hill almost 6 years ago, Flip was asked if he wanted to take on running Murray Hill – The answer was “Yes!” Flip is a retired Chief Petty Officer & Navy Air Crewman who came to Jacksonville in 1989 from San Antonio, TX. Flip enjoys his work at Murray Hill because of the positive influence it has on kid’s lives. The fact that he is a huge music enthusiast also provides a lot of enjoyment for him. Even when Flip decides to step back from his working life, he envisions himself taking a stab at being an entrepreneur, creating and growing businesses to promote music events. Flip is actively involved in social media. He says staying on top of the news feeds gives him a pulse on what kids are thinking when it comes to music and their likes and desires. When Flip is not at the Murray Hill Theater, he enjoys the beach, being with his family, the outdoors and sitting in front of his aquarium watching the fish float around without a care. He admires his wife, Trudy, “because she is a rock and a caring and selfless individual”. See what’s coming up at Murray Hill at MurrayHillTheatre.com

B-52S

ELVIS COSTELLO

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

Thirty five years and more than twenty million albums into their career, there can be no doubt as to why they remain one of rock music’s most beloved and enduring bands. Any mystery concerning the band’s longevity and ongoing appeal is immediately solved when exposed to a B-52s concert experience. From groundbreaking songs like “Rock Lobster,” “Dance This Mess Around” and “Private Idaho” to chart-topping hits like “Love Shack,” “Roam” and “Deadbeat Club,” and their thrilling reemergence on the pop scene with their 2008 album “Funplex,” the B-52s’ unforgettable dance-rock tunes start a party every time their music begins.

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

Voted one of Rolling Stone’s 100 most iconic musicians, Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Member Elvis Costello will perform some of his biggest hit songs. Spend an evening hearing the stories behind the music that are all rooted deeply in his Irish heritage. Costello’s first broadcast recording was alongside his dad in a television commercial for R. White’s Lemonade (“I’m a Secret Lemonade Drinker”). His father wrote and sang the song; Costello provided backing vocals. The advertisement won a silver award at the 1974 International Advertising Festival. In 1977, Costello was the first new artist signed to Stiff Records but had to wait until their eleventh single release before being heard by the public. He continued to work as a computer operator for the Elizabeth Arden cosmetics company, recording during “sick days.”

Formed on an October night in 1976 following drinks at an Athens, Georgia, Chinese restaurant, the band played their first gig at a friend’s house on Valentine’s Day 1977. Naming themselves after Southern slang for exaggerated bouffant hairdos, the newly-christened B-52s (Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, Keith Strickland, Cindy Wilson and Ricky Wilson) began weekend road trips to New York City for gigs at CBGB’s and a handful of other venues.

His first national club dates took place between a month-long, Monday-night residency at the Nashville Rooms, West Kensington, with Dire Straits among the opening acts. By the final week, the show was threatened with police closure when crowds become too big for the tiny venue. He went on to produce such textured hit songs as “Watching the Detectives,” “Pump It Up,” “Radio Radio,” “Veronica” and more.

The B-52s began to attract fans far beyond the punk clubs of the Lower East Side, galvanizing the pop world with their stream-of-consciousness approach to songwriting and outrageous performance. They had clearly tapped into a growing audience for new music that was much larger than anyone could have anticipated. “We always appealed to people outside the mainstream,” says Kate Pierson, “and I think more people feel they’re outside the mainstream these days.”

INTERVIEWS IN THE MUSIC COMMUNITY WITH TODD RYKACZEWSKI

JANE LINDBERG

EMILY KOPP

EMILYKOPPMUSIC.COM PERFORMING MAR. 4 AT JACKRABBITS

OF ISLAND CHAMBER SINGERS PERFORMING APR. 17 & 19

BUZZ: How does a musician hone their skills the traditional way compared to the untraditional way?

BUZZ: How important is

classical choral literature to a community? Is that importance reflected in your performance of “Fate and Fortune” on April 17 and 19?

JL: First, it gives people who love to sing it an opportunity to do so; that is how we started as a group. I had at least three or four people ask me if there was a choral group that sang classical music. At the time (2004) I had to say “no.” I decided to advertise and see if there were people who would like to be a part of a classical group. Twenty-four people came to the initial meeting and they became Island Chamber Singers. Many of them are still active in the group.

Secondly, it provides a means for the general public to hear the literature at a reasonable cost and at the same time develop an audience for classical choral music. Finally, I believe the enjoyment of listening to fine music performed well is uplifting to the community and makes the environment more culturally stimulated and a better place to live.

BUZZ: Why did you choose to perform Carmina Burana? Do you think “O Fortuna” still reflects well today?

JL: I selected it because I love the piece. There is every kind of music you can

imagine: it is funny, cleverly put together, percussive, demanding of a choral group trying to sing the lyrics that are medieval Latin and High Middle German, and enjoyable to sing and to listen to.

Read the full interview at iwantaBuzz.com. 36 March 2015 • iwantaBUZZ.com

EK: To me, the word traditional in this instance signifies the old school/grassroots/not putting the cart before the horse way, while untraditional might signify the new school means of honing one’s musical craft. Youtube is a truly wonderful thing that has created an outlet for really anyone; there are many pros and cons to that. To me, nothing can substitute one person, standing on a stage, playing music in front of a living, breathing audience just a few feet away. I’ve learned more about my voice, my songs, my ability as an entertainer, and desire to move people by performing live. I fall in love with music all over again every time I have the privilege to stand on a stage. BUZZ: Do you have any crazy stories from providing hospitality to artists like Marc Cohn, Joshua Radin, Joe Bonamassa, The Civil Wars, Dr. John, Bryan Adams and Ani DiFranco?

EK: I have quite a few; though, in hopes of preserving my own good name, I’ll keep those stories to myself! Nothing too crazy though, they’re all really great folks. BUZZ: What’s new in 2015? EK: Actually, I will be putting out an EP this year with four new songs that

really display how my live show sounds! I’m thrilled to be sharing that soon. Also, I turn 25 in October – mark your calendars.

We’ve been talking about getting healthy with our food choices in the last few posts. Now it’s time to talk about the other side of a healthy lifestyle. If you are eating right and not working on your physical fitness, then your health plan is off-balance. Pick up those feet and get active! You can start small by walking. Make a goal to walk 5,000 steps daily. You can then increase to 10,000 steps, and so on. Invest in a pedometer or your smartphone might have one built in! Many of us have desk jobs and don’t walk enough on a day-to-day basis. Here are a couple ideas to help you reach your step goal: • Get up and walk in the office. Take some breaks throughout the day to stretch and get your body moving. Even if it’s just a walk to the restroom, it adds up! • Take a walk break instead of lunch. Bring a set of clothes and take a walk during lunch. You can even get a group together and start a daily walking group. There is power in numbers. • Take the stairs. Avoid the elevator or escalator during the day and walk instead. Take the time to add steps into your day when the opportunity arises. • Walk after work. Add a walk to your nightly routine. Instead of heading to the kitchen or the couch, walk first. You will feel better after a 30-60 minute session. Life is busy, so try to make a goal and stick to it the best you can. If you have to miss a day, don’t beat yourself up. Remember, progress – not perfection – is key. Wedding season will soon be upon us and, for some, the hunt for a perfect venue will begin. The Keeler Property is a 40-acre country estate that boasts Jacksonville’s only covered bridge and a 9,500 square-foot barn that accommodates up to 300 guests. The private country estate was discovered by its current owner, Diana Monell Fanning, five years ago. She first fell in love with the property and its southern charm while searching for her own one-of-a-kind place to have her wedding. In awe of its natural beauty, she took interest in polishing this diamond in the rough. After much encouragement, she decided to turn something beautiful into something spectacular; a place to make memories that would last a lifetime. Since 2010, the Keeler Property has been one of the go-to places for blushing brides to hold their rustic, country chic weddings. The stunning property provides ample space for guests and a romantic setting for those embarking on a new life together. There is also on-site parking and a bridal suite for the bridal party to make memories in. The Keeler Property not only sets a beautiful backdrop for weddings, but also offers space for corporate gatherings with enough room for teambuilding activities and company picnics.

ASK THE DOCTOR such as military, police, athletes, and some patients whose corneas are too thin to sculpt after a flap has been created. For the most part, however, more LASIK procedures are performed in this country.

WHAT IS Z-LASIK? DR. SHMUNES Z-LASIK refers to a method of flap creation in a planar mode

DR. SHMUNES

ATLANTIC EYE INSTITUTE AtlanticEyeInstitute.com

WHAT IS REFRACTIVE SURGERY? DR. SHMUNES Refractive eye surgery is a general term to describe any

procedure performed on the eye that results in a decrease in refractive error, thus decreasing the need for spectacles in individuals who previously depended on glasses to have their best vision. The term can be used to describe both intraocular (inside the eye) procedures such as refractive lens exchange (replacing the eye’s natural lens with one that allows the eye better focusing ability). Another intraocular procedure gaining popularity is an intraocular lens that sits in front of the eye’s natural lens, much like a contact lens. The more popular, and believed to be the safer, types of refractive surgery are ocular surface procedures where there is no penetration into the eye itself. This method relies on changing the steepness of the cornea (the clear window to the iris, pupil, etc.). The two most commonly performed procedures using this method are PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) and LASIK. These two procedures differ in how they change the corneal surface to reduce nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. PRK (epilasik) involves treating the corneal surface with a laser after removing the outer layer of tissue (epithelium). It requires several days of healing (regrowth of the outer layer of the cornea) before vision is restored and can be fairly uncomfortable for a few days.

(x-y plane) at a precise depth with a fully adjustable hinge width and position. Z-LASIK-Z is an even newer method which creates a three-dimensional flap where not only flap size, but shape can be altered as well as the angle of the flap edges. This allows for more customization and better flap geometry to maximize stability and improve visual outcomes even further.

Originally LASIK (which is performed by a laser) required flap creation using a steel blade with a mechanical device cutting through corneal tissue. Over the years, there has been a desire to “cut” a flap with more precision (especially where depth is concerned) and more reproducibility. Lasers have been developed for flap creation/cutting and have slowly been replacing steel blades for this part of the procedure by many refractive surgeons. This means that two lasers are used in LASIK- one to make a flap and one to treat the eye itself. Z-LASIK is the preferred device for this first step at Atlantic Eye Institute because it represents a great improvement over other laser flap makers. Other laser flap devices leave small tissue bridges that have to be separated manually once the flap is made. This can lead to a rougher surface for the laser that treats the refractive error. This is significantly reduced due to an overlapping, smaller cutting pattern created by the Z-laser. Less energy is also required to make a flap and this eliminates the rare, but uncomfortable, inflammatory problems reported with most other laser flap makers that require higher energy levels to work. Also, there is no moving from one laser to another (sometimes even having to change beds) because the Z-laser is portable and works with the corneal shaping laser in the same bed. Z-LASIK is offered in Jacksonville only by Atlantic Eye Institute. In our opinion, it represents the biggest improvement in laser flap creation in years. It is also capable of performing corneal incisions that, in the future, will be used with inlays to treat presbyopia, the near vision decrease that naturally comes with aging. You can find out more about Z-LASIK by visiting TheEyeGuys.com or AtlanticEyeInstitute.com.

LASIK, on the other hand, requires a hinged flap to be made by cutting approximately 20% of the anterior cornea and folding it back on the hinge. The laser is then applied to the deeper corneal tissue (stroma) correcting the refractive error. After this is done, the flap that was previously created is folded back into position and smoothed out, where it naturally adheres to the corneal bed. This is much more comfortable than PRK and vision improvement is noted in a few hours rather than days. LASIK is the preferred method of correction by most patients because of the speed of recovery and comfort. There are certain patients who are better suited to PRK due to occupations where eye trauma is more likely, The information presented herein reflects only the opinion of the author and not iwantaBUZZ Entertainment Magazine, it’s owner, or publisher. Hemming Park

Great public spaces are necessary for vibrant, urban places. Jacksonville’s oldest public square, Hemming Park, is undergoing a massive transformation. Through amenities being added to the park, regular programming, and special events, the park is slowly transforming from a desolate brick plaza into a community resource. The Friends of Hemming Park, the organization managing the park, is six months into their work. They recently held their first quarterly stakeholder meeting discussing their first quarter successes. Here were some of the many highlights: • 43 events including field trips, toddler events, festivals, fitness classes. • 12 people have been connected to housing or shelters. • Charlie’s Cafe & Vagabond have served more than 2,700 people. • Ongoing veteran services, including 60 job applications sent to clients and 10 veterans referred to Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) and other programs. • Increased the number of tables from 26 to 30 and chairs from 67 to 82. • Ambassadors are in the park 7 a.m. – 7 p.m., seven days a week. The Friends of Hemming Park envision a park that speaks to our diverse community where children to young professionals to retirees all feel a sense of connection. Downtown Jacksonville is going through a Renaissance, and Hemming Park is in the center of it all. March 2015 • iwantaBUZZ.com

YOUR LEGAL

CORNER ASK THE ATTORNEY Sarah Gulati, Esq. Gulati Law, P.L. At Gulati Law we help business owners, real estate investors, and individuals in their business and real estate endeavors. GulatiLaw.com

What is title insurance and why do I need it?

Title is the foundation of real estate ownership and refers to your legal right to own, use, control, possess or dispose of the piece of property purchased. To obtain title to the property, a title search is conducted, which provides a detailed examination of the historical records concerning a property. A title search can show a number of title defects liens, and other restrictions, which include, but are not limited to, unpaid taxes, unsatisfied mortgages, judgments and restrictions limiting the use of the land. However, there are some hidden defects that even the most diligent title search may never reveal. For instance, the previous owner could have signed his or her spouse’s signature on the transfer Deed, resulting in a possible claim by a legal spouse. Title insurance protects your ownership rights. If a claim is made against your property, title insurance will, in accordance with the terms of your policy, assure you of a legal defense, and potentially pay all court costs and related fees. If the claim proves valid, you may be reimbursed for your actual loss up to the face amount of the policy.

Lights, Camera, Jacksonville! By Jax Flim Office

Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s on-screen adaptation of Jesse Andrews’ novel “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” hit it big when it opened at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. The film focuses on Greg (Thomas Mann), a teenager who has a knack for film and befriends classmate Rachel (Olivia Cook), who is diagnosed with leukemia. One standout actor, however, had a breakout performance in this film – Jacksonville native RJ Cyler, born Ronald Cyler, II. Young Cyler plays Earl, the main character’s best friend. In January 2012, Cyler’s dream of acting became a reality when an open audition was held in Jacksonville. His family then made the decision to further his career by moving to Los Angeles in 2013. “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” made a record-breaking $12 million deal with Fox Searchlight and Indian Paintbrush. Cyler aspires to become one of the few Jacksonville natives to make it on the big screen worldwide. Fellow Jacksonvillians are definitely wishing him luck!

ROSANNA GIOIA

SAVOUR SENSATIONS Interview by Monica Stouder Tell us about your unique business.

ROGUE IRISH LAGER MAC & CHEESE I’m known for my mac and cheese; I mean REALLY known. It occurred to me that I hadn’t made a Cookin’ with Craft version. What better time than March to use the Rogue Irish Lager. I’ll admit, I have way more Greek in my bloodline than Irish, but I celebrate St. Patrick’s Day as if I had a double dose of Irish in me (I KNOW there’s a dirty joke or two in there). Erin go bragh! Rogue Irish Lager has a mellow flavor with a crisp apple finish, & a hint of breadiness –perfect for floating Guinness. What am I thinking? Black and tan, of course. Rogue Irish Lager Mac & Cheese is born. Revolutionary!

INGREDIENTS 16 oz pasta (macaroni, small shells, etc.) 22 oz Rogue Irish Lager 4 Tbs Irish butter + 2 Tbs for topping ½ cup finely chopped shallots 3 Tbs flour ½ tsp ground black pepper 1 tsp kosher or sea salt 1/8 tsp ground cayenne pepper 2 ½ cups whole milk 1 ¾ cups half and half ½ cup Guinness or stout 8 oz shredded white American cheese 8 oz shredded Irish cheddar cheese 4 oz shredded smoked Gouda ½ cup panko bread crumbs

DIRECTIONS Cook pasta according to package directions, replacing 22 oz of the water with Rogue Irish Lager. In large saucepan, cook shallots in 4 Tbs of butter until they are tender. Stir in flour, peppers & salt. Stir for 30 to 60 seconds, cooking out flour flavor. Add milk and half & half. Heat until slightly thickened, stirring/whisking constantly. Add Guinness/stout, heat to a simmer. Turn off heat. Slowly add cheeses, stirring until all melted. Stir in pasta until pasta is coated. Pour into large baking dish. Melt butter, pour over breadcrumbs and stir. Cover pasta mixture and bake at 350 for 25 to 30 minutes. Sláinte mhait!

Brew Time By Marc Wisdom

Sourcing Suds By Brian Little

Craft Beer’s “Can-Do” Attitude Across the beer community, the debate rages on: to can or not to can. Some unenlightened purists contend that cans are not a suitable container for great craft beer; that only bottles are appropriate to hold the goodness of the brew. More free-thinking beer lovers have embraced the can as a viable and ecologically friendly alternative.

Follow me on twitter @beerapostle Sourcing Suds is a column by the Beer Apostle, Brian Little, recognizing beer that’s served and brewed locally. Join him each month as he highlights different craft bars and brews!

Over the past few years, the pop-top can has made a comeback of sorts. Locally, Intuition Ale Works became the first brewery in Florida to employ cans as a packaging technology when they began canning three of their most popular brews last year. Today’s aluminum cans have been reengineered and have epoxy linings that protect the flavor of the beer inside so well that it has less of an influence on the beer than the inside of a keg. Craft beer drinkers also tend to be more concerned about the environment; cans are 100% recyclable and most cans contain as much as 60% recycled materials. Perhaps most notably, cans block 100% of beer’s most notorious killer: light. These days, brands such as Magic Hat, Shipyard and New Belgium can be found in cans. As the industry catches on to the advantages of cans over glass bottles, more and more beers will be available in the metal containers. The can is back and likely here to stay. Marc Wisdom learned to crush beer cans on his forehead while wasting his parent’s money in college. But, that does not stop him from sharing his beer knowledge at www.JaxBeerGuy.com.

Source Aardwolf Brewing Company The setting is a post-apocalyptic world in which Sean Connery strolls around in tight spandex and tries to save the world in a cinematic expression of good vs. evil. The movie, “Zardoz,” is terrible. It’s a mockery of acting and should have ruined Connery’s career. Thanks to the creative geniuses at Aardwolf Brewing Co., “Zardoz” has been resuscitated. Only this time, Zardoz is a Russian Imperial Stout.

Suds Zardoz Zardoz Russian Imperial Stout is a sci-fi thriller in your mouth. It’s James Bond meets Chewbacca meets that chick from “The Fifth Element.” Jest aside, this beer is the real deal. Zardoz brings rich flavors of chocolate and smoked malts. There are bits of oak that run throughout the palate, finishing with a subtle bitterness. Zardoz goes down surprisingly well for a RIS that weighs in at 10% ABV. There’s a sweet vanilla flavor that strings the smoked malts, charred oak, and bittering flavors together into something that is complex and quite enjoyable. I highly recommend visiting Aardwolf’s taproom on Wednesdays, as a new and unique pilot batch is released each week. To see more from the Beer Apostle, visit TheBeerApostle.com. And as always, support craft beer and drink local! March 2015 • iwantaBUZZ.com

MORE FROM MARDI GRAS JAX 2015 PARTY

Aries (March 21- April 19)

Beggars can’t be choosers. It’s time you realize who you are and try dating within your range. If you are only a 5, face that fact and quit chasing after 8’s and 9’s. You know the rule: plus or minus one. Deal with it, or hit the gym and/or plastic surgery center.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

your love life this month. And if you think you haven’t been (denial), when’s the last time you tried anything different or new? Ha! See, I told you. Predictable isn’t comfortable, it’s boring.

Gemini (May 21 – June 21)

Your issue with trust seems like it will rear its ugly head this month. You may be turning a lot of heads lately, but your jealous nature is flaring. Instead of a good romantic month, your inner beast is boiling over, most likely from your lack of confidence. Try working on that.

Cancer (June 22 – July 22)

Could your hard work finally pay off? All those little things you’ve been doing are finally going to get that crush to notice you. Good philosophy: do a thousand nice things in the hopes he or she will talk to you, as opposed to walking right up and talking to them and see if they are even worth a thousand anythings!

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

Your mate wants to take your relationship to the next level, as in marriage. Whoa, real life stuff alert! I have a feeling someone has their fingers reaching for the abort lever, but before you jump ship, you can try to apply the brakes. I suggest slamming on them instead of the gentle breaking one does when on ice.

Virgo (August 23 – September 22)

Love planet Venus spends this month in Capricorn, which is your fifth house. This apparently means you’re not taking relationships seriously and being a “flirt.” We grown-ups use a different word for those playing the field and seen on many dates with a different person each time, but “flirt” is a safer word to print.

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

According to an online source, “Your hoarding instincts are ebbing this month,” according to an online source. Your hoarding instincts? That doesn’t sound very romantic at all. Unless, of course, you are collecting phone numbers for a lonely weekend, which should be pretty soon.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

Romance kicks in this month. The Sun moves to Pisces, your fifth house of love. I’m not sure what that means to you, but my “Horoscopes for Idiots” book tells me others will find you a suitable mate due to planetary alignment. Crazy stuff, huh?

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

This month you find yourself lucky with love. It’s time to indulge in a hedonistic fantasy or two. And why stop at just two if you can have more? Yes, hedonistic was the word of the day that I have been waiting to use.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

The no-brainer online advice this month fell to you Capricorn. “Your workaholic tendencies could cut into baby-making hours.” That was the advice from an online competitor. Just in case you couldn’t figure that one out yourself, they (and I) are here to help you out.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

Did you hear about the person getting dumped? Yeah, it’s you; and just after your birthday. Seven billion other people out there, there has to be at least one other sucker in the bunch, right? I hear Virgo is out and fun this time of year.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

Crossword puzzle provided by BestCrosswords.com (www.bestcrosswords.com). Used with permission.

You are craving freedom this month. Lucky for you, you won’t have to worry about anyone bogging you down, because you’ll still be alone. It’s ok; this should be something you are used to. Embrace what all those tied-down people want! Freedom is so much better than companionship, right?
