THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON I’VE INTERVIEWED THIS MONTH He’s a veteran reporter with The Tampa Bay Times. Now, Craig Pittman is the latest author to capitalize on what he calls “the sinkhole capital of America.” In his entertaining new book “Oh Florida!” Pittman looks at the weird, bizarre, and headlinegrabbing events that define our Sunshine State. The book is part history, part travelogue, and part memoir. “For every story like the naked man high on ‘bath salts’ who brutally attacked a homeless person on a Miami highway in 2012, there are others like the case of Florida resident, Terri Schiavo, whose medical condition sparked a national debate on end-of-life care—not to mention Florida’s infamous role tipping the 2000 presidential election,” said Pittman. In addition to Florida’s fantastic weirdness, Pittman unearths some fun facts about the state: • Kids who grew up in Florida include Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Model Kate Upton, and John Atanasoff, who invented the computer. • Florida is home to many strange wildlife encounters, but also helped produce the Endangered Species Act and the national wildlife sanctuary system. • Everywhere in Florida, you are an hour away from the beach. They have rescued over 300 dogs, received the Jacksonville’s Boldest Non Profit Award, and worked with Putnam County and St John’s County to eliminate breed-discriminatory practices.

Celebration Church meets every Wednesday to prepare food bags for the homeless community in Clay County. They encourage youth to come out and help battle hunger. Through this, Celebration teaches them the importance of serving others. The food items are all donations from church members and Waste Not Want Not.

The Old Dog House provides many wonderful dogs with the ability to live out their lives in dignity, surrounded by love. However, they need continued community support to do it, relying solely on donations from the public to fund their organization. The Old Dog House participates in as many community events as possible throughout the year. The third Saturday of every month, they have an adoption day at Pet Supermarket at Jacksonville Beach. On Sept. 10, they will be at the Riverside Arts Market Arf Barket. On Sept. 24, they will be at the Best Friends Animal Society Strut Your Mutt at Metropolitan Park. In addition, November is designated as Senior Pet Month, so they always have special things happening to celebrate, like a limited-edition T-shirt.
Kim Stordahl The Old Dog House BUZZ: What is the mission of The Old Dog House? KS: The mission of The Old Dog House is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome older and senior dogs in the Northeast Florida area. We also strive to educate the public about the joy involved in adding an older or senior dog to their family through positive stories of the dogs that have been or are in the care of The Old Dog House. BUZZ: What makes your rescue different than others? KS: Our focus is the difference from other groups. We concentrate our rescue efforts on older, larger breed dogs that are at least six or seven years old and at least 40 pounds. The majority of the dogs that have come through the rescue are mixed breeds.
the sparkle return to the eyes of a dog that had given up hope and watching them thrive is indescribable. BUZZ: What would you say to someone who is hesitant to adopt a dog from The Old Dog House? KS: I completely understand the hesitation in adopting an older or senior dog. The main worry seems to be not having enough time with the dog. Having to say goodbye too soon. Losing a pet is devastating no matter how long they have been a part of the family. I try to explain how rewarding adopting an older or senior dog can be. Their gratitude is abundant and their love is unconditional. They are wonderful teachers, especially in how to live in the present. They also remind us how to be patient and compassionate. As far as saying goodbye, I try to describe how giving a senior dog the happy ending they deserve outweighs the heartbreak I feel from letting them go.
BUZZ: What’s your favorite thing about your work?
WINSTON FROM THE OLD DOG HOUSE
Winston the Golden Retriever is one of The Old Dog House’s biggest turnarounds. He was found running in Orange Park in 2013. He was about 40 pounds underweight with no fur to cover his hind end, obviously in need of medical help. He was taken to Clay County Animal Care & Control. The Old Dog House was contacted by the shelter when no family came to reclaim him. From the moment he arrived at the rescue, Winston had a sweet disposition and was always wagging his hairless tail. Winston was heartworm positive, suffered kidney issues and arthritis, and had a weak heart. He also has four to six fused vertebrae in his back which, along with his arthritis, makes mobility a bit of a challenge. Despite all of his medical issues, Winston has a strong will to live and loves life! The Old Dog House has figured out his cocktail of medications that keeps him happy and his issues at bay. He also receives cold laser therapy twice a week that helps with his mobility. His fur has grown back into a thick, luxurious blonde coat. Unfortunately, his many medical issues and the related costs are a major barrier in finding Winston a forever home. But, he’s safe at The Old Dog House for the remainder of his life.
KS: I have many favorite things about my work with The Old Dog House, but the main thing that keeps me going is seeing a sick, broken dog blossom with love, care, and compassion. The feeling I get seeing

EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT // SENIOR DOG CARE TIPS 1. Visit the Veterinarian Twice Annually Make sure the veterinarian checks your pet’s vital signs, heart, lungs, skin, ears, and teeth. Some veterinarians may recommend screenings to ensure your dog isn’t suffering from diseases.
2. Watch for Diseases that Affect Older Pets Many older dogs can suffer from a variety of health issues. Check for diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, cancer, arthritis, and dementia.
3. Consider Your Pet’s Diet As your pet ages, her diet may need to change. As her metabolism slows, look into senior diets that are lower in fat and easily digestible. Remember to check with your veterinarian before changing your dog’s food.
4. Regulate Body Temperature Older dogs are more sensitive to heat, so keep them inside on extremely hot days.
Senior dogs are also more likely to experience heat stroke, so don’t exercise with them on especially hot or humid days.
5. Install Ramps As dogs age, they may develop arthritis. Installing ramps inside and outside of your house can make them more comfortable when climbing.
6. Brush Those Teeth Your pet’s dental care is always important, but it becomes even more vital as your pet ages. Excessive plaque can lead to a variety of ailments, so brush your dog’s teeth with pet toothpaste and check with your veterinarian to see if your dog needs a professional cleaning.

William Garcia Ruiz Havana, Cuba native William Garcia Ruiz, moved to Jacksonville six years ago. He is currently a fine arts student at Florida State College at Jacksonville. While he is comfortable with a variety of media, he favors oils on canvas. Purposeful brushstrokes and thoughtful images collide on his canvases. “I like to think I am mixing emotions when I squeeze the tube colors to form my palette,” said Garcia. “I strive to make each piece evoke something in the viewer, like remembering a re-occurring dream or forgotten memory.” Garcia has been painting since he was old enough to hold a brush. “Where I grew up, it was difficult to express anything that did not follow the government’s take on the matter,” said Garcia. “But our people are proud and creative. Even though society had limits, everyone created something. These items provided an income, and an outlet.”

Live at Thrasher Horne Center August 27 Wayne Brady, well-known and beloved face in the world of comedy, is bringing his “It’s My Line” tour to the Thrasher-Horne Center on August 27. Brady has been entertaining audiences with his comedy, singing and improv since his debut on the hysterical improv show, “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” Brady was born in Columbus, Georgia and soon moved to Orlando, Florida to live with his grandparents. At the age of 16, Brady started performing at the Orlando improv troupe SAK Comedy Club, where he first started developing his improv skills. He went to Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando and later attended the University of Miami in 1996.
In 1998, Brady became one of the improvisational theater performers in the original British version of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” The last season was filmed in Hollywood, and Brady soon became a regular on the American version, hosted by Drew Carey. It was his first stateside television exposure. In 2003, Brady won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety, Musical or Comedy Series for his work on the show, the only person to win the award for a television series.
Throughout the years, Brady has dabbled in many different endeavors, exposing his various talents. He has released two albums, “A Long Time Coming” and “Radio Wayne,” voiced several animated films, and hosted game shows.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT MOSH: Celebrating 75 years By Kristi Taylor
The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) is celebrating 75 years of service to the community this year. MOSH recently opened the exhibit, “Museum of Science & History: A Gateway to Nature” in the Jacksonville International Airport’s Sky Gallery. Since opening in its first permanent home in 1948, MOSH has inspired natural curiosity through exhibits and programs that teach visitors to “appreciate the little things of life that abound in their backyards, city parks, and interesting places they may visit.” Appreciate the little

Objects and specimens from the Museum’s Collections are complemented by artist Kathy Stark’s striking paintings of Northeast Florida’s green spaces, weaving together the legacy of Jacksonville’s parks systems and the 75-year history of MOSH. BUILDING BRIGHTER FUTURES IN NORTH FLORIDA By Mike Kuusela
We met with Donna Rex, the CEO of the local North Florida affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, as well as Jasmine Salter, who will soon be a proud new homeowner at the organization’s latest development called OceanGate. Rex has been with Beaches Habitat for Humanity for two years, and previously came from a background of corporate banking and other work in the nonprofit sector. She used to work in public broadcasting, and studied communications at Florida State University. Rex explained that joining Beaches Habitat came as a calling of faith. Even though Habitat for Humanity is a Christian-based organization, it services individuals from all ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds. The main headquarters for Habitat for Humanity International is located in Atlanta, Georgia, and has more than 1,500 affiliates that operate independently across the United States, and 70 additional across the world. Up to this point, the organization as a whole has served approximately 6.8 million people. Beaches Habitat for Humanity recently celebrated its 25th year of serving North Florida, and is currently in full swing of developing their new OceanGate community off of Mayport Road in Atlantic Beach. To be a potential homeowner in one of the Beaches Habitat for Humanity communities, applicants must qualify as having a need for housing. The criteria for establishing this need include: currently living in substandard housing, paying more than 30 percent of one’s income in rent, or living in a dwelling with too many occupants. In addition, the applicant has to either live or work within the chapter’s designated area for more than a year. Once the applicants are approved and have met the initial conditions for home ownership, they also have to put in 300 hours of “sweat equity.” This includes time spent building their own home or contributing in various other ways to the organization. OceanGate will have 70 townhomes within the community, 24 of which have already been sold. I got the opportunity to meet with soon-to-be homeowner, Jasmine Salter. She said she came to Beaches Habitat for Humanity wanting a home and that the organization took her under its wing and laid out the game plan for achieving her dream.

Salter is a Jacksonville native and currently works at ADT. She said, “seeing the positive impact the organization has on local communities is a great feeling.” She explained how proud she is to be from a place where her fellow Jacksonville residents look out for one another and step up to help each other. She also said that the handson approach to home ownership the organization provides is an excellent way to learn how to maintain her new home. In addition to learning construction skills, the organization provides education in managing finances and proper neighborly etiquette. During my visit with Beaches Habitat for Humanity, we also met with one of the local volunteers, Melissa Villarini. Villarini has worked at ADT for 19 years as an area administrative manager. ADT has a volunteer program called “ADT Cares,” locally known as the “Habitat Challenge.” Each year, there is an ADT Cares Week where employees partner with a NPO and provide a full week of service.

Being involved in the community provides great pride in what we do,” said Villarini. “We take pride in knowing that we are helping one of our own fellow team members in building her new home. It’s a great cause, providing a basic human need to local families in Jacksonville.
”
Once residents move into a new Beaches Habitat community, they are expected to adhere to HOA guidelines. The typical Habitat for Humanity community will consist of 30 units and take an average of one and a half years to complete. OceanGate is the largest community the local affiliate has ever taken on. The entire project will take about four years. Each home is approximately 1,250 square feet and the typical mortgage payment is $550 a month. The organization receives donations from several large sponsors such as Valspar paint, who donates all paint for the Habitat homes. The organization also receives support from PGA tour, Scheidel Foundation, Publix Super Markets, ADT, and various local auto dealers. In addition, all appliances for the units are donated from Whirlpool. We asked Rex what the most exciting time in the organization’s history is and she explained, “right now because we are serving more families than ever before. We are celebrating the 300th home locally, and we will have contributed enough money to Tithe to build 150 homes overseas.” These overseas locations include Coast Rica, Haiti, Nepal, and Lesotho. MB: I went to culinary school in Portland, Oregon. I graduated from the Western Culinary Institute (now the Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts). BUZZ: What cuisines influence your style of cooking?
MB: I spent a large time of my career at a French restaurant, so I would have to say French — though I love it all. BUZZ: What sets your restaurant

Mocha Truffle Cookies INGREDIENTS 1/2 cup butter 1/2 cup chocolate chunks 2 tbsp instant coffee
DIRECTIONS Melt butter and chocolate in microwave until smooth. Add coffee. Cool briefly. Whisk in eggs, vanilla, and sugars. In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, cocoa powder, and salt. Mix wet and dry ingredients to incorporate. Drop by tablespoons onto a greased cookie sheet, 2 inches apart. Bake at 350 degrees for 9-11 minutes. 26

Fresh Subs at a Store Near You We had the opportunity to visit the awesome locally-owned sub franchise, Larry’s Giant Subs. Prior to doing the interview with the company’s CEO, Larry Raikes, I had visited many of their locations and personally experienced consistent quality and taste in their subs. We met with Larry and his brother, Mitchell Raikes, who is the company’s vice president. Larry’s Giant Subs got its start back in 1982 when Larry’s parents moved from Buffalo, New York to West Palm Beach, and the Raikes brothers tagged along to the Sunshine State. At first, Larry started working as a bartender in Jacksonville. He would get off of work and try to find a place to eat, and there would be nothing open for healthy eating. This spawned the idea to go into business by opening up a sub shop similar to those Larry had frequented in Buffalo. Larry attempted to recruit his brother Mitchell to be his business partner, but at the time Mitchell was working at Florida Machine and Foundry in downtown Jacksonville. When the steel plant started experiencing layoffs, Mitchell decided it was time to take his brother up on the offer. Fast forward a few decades and now Larry’s Giant Subs sits 69 locations strong, consisting of 60 franchise locations and nine corporate locations throughout Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Texas. The company employs 125 employees in it’s corporate locations. The state of Florida has the majority of these shops with 50 locations and their corporate offices are located just above their restaurant on Southside Boulevard. In 2010, Larry and Mitchell acquired Raikes Farms, which is the supplier of all ingredients for their sub shops and also supplies several clients such as the Cinotti’s Bakery, The French Pantry and Metro Diner to name a few. All in all, Raikes Farms sells about 6,000,000 pounds of product a year, some of which goes into producing the 18,000,000 subs the company sells each year. According to Larry, the most popular sub sold on a regular basis is the
“Ultimate,” which is made with all natural USDA choice roast beef, roasted turkey breast and premium ham. His second best seller is the “Italian BIG One.” Most of the locations within the company also offer its patrons beer and wine, which also incorporates some of the local craft beers found in Jacksonville. Each year, the company participates in the Shamrock Parade on Saint Patrick’s Day in Riverside’s Five Points district. The company also supports several great causes and nonprofits on the First Coast, including the Children’s Miracle Network, various golf tournaments that raise money for charities, Muscular Dystrophy Association and Zombiefest held by the Easy Peasy Fitness Foundation in October. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays, Larry’s Giant Subs offers a free kids meal with the purchase of a large sub and drink. Military, police and firefighters enjoy a 20 percent discount on their meal. Larry’s Giant Subs is taking steps toward a green initiative too, providing customers who drive electric cars an area to recharge their vehicles for free at their corporate office location on Southside Boulevard. Larry’s company is also one of the first in the region to start using and selling biodegradable water bottles. On top of the green initiative, Larry’s Giant Subs has a strong focus on promoting healthy eating and diet. They have sponsored several local professional athletes as well as local Mr. Olympia, Dexter “The Blade” Jackson. Their products consist of all natural deli meats and cheeses, which have no added growth hormones, nitrate free, antibiotic-free, casein free, and gluten free. JILL SCOTT STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: Three-time Grammy award winning R&B vocalist Jill Scott made her debut in 2000 with the album, “Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1,” showing off her versatility. Scott began her performing career as a spoken word artist, appearing at live poetry readings to perform her work. She was eventually discovered by Amir “Questlove” Thompson of The Roots. Questlove invited her to join the band in the studio. The collaboration resulted in a co-writing credit for Scott on the song, “You Got Me.” In 2000, Erykah Badu and The Roots won a Grammy for “You Got Me,” and Scott debuted as an artist during a Roots live show, singing as original artist of the song. Subsequently, Scott collaborated with Eric Benet, Will Smith, and Common. Doc: I was 21 when skin cancer developed on my back and was removed. It just changed everything for me. BUZZ: What should we, especially living in Florida, do to prevent sun damage that leads to skin cancer? Doc: We should start young. They should have sunscreen available in schools and have shade at playgrounds. BUZZ: What do you teach your patients about skin protection? Doc: Slip on clothing, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shade, and slide on sunglasses. This should be taught in schools every year. BUZZ: Those are great tips. What else can be done? Doc: The practice of sun avoidance is what we need to teach more. It’s more of shade, shirt, and doing stuff early and doing stuff late. Avoid sun 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

What compliments do you hear most often from your customers? We hear great things about our cocktails. The biggest compliment is that the service is approachable and friendly. Brass Monkey Ingredients 1 oz. Drambuie 1 oz. Cognac 1 oz.Fresh squeezed OJ ½ oz. port wine 3 dashes of housemade clove bitters Bitters: 5 oz. of a high proof spirit 80+ (doesn’t have to be clear) 15 cloves
Steep the cloves in the spirit of your choice overnight. In the morning, strain the cloves out and store your bitters in a sealed container. Put the ½ oz. of port in the glass first. Add ice. In a shaker, add the Cognac, Drambuie, OJ, and bitters. Shake for 10 seconds. Then double strain over the port. Top with the orange and enjoy!

Aries (March 21- April 19) Looks like you may have a relationship hanging in the balance. Something about Saturn being in retrograde in Libra or something. Not sure. I am guessing it’s because you’re easily irritated or your lack of sensitivities toward others. Or maybe it’s because of Saturn. Your call. Taurus (April 20 – May 20) This one website stated you should open your problems up to your friends. I don’t know about your friends, but not everyone wants to hear about your problems. Mine would most likely make fun of me. Keep your issues to yourself and to professionals only. Gemini (May 21 – June 21) With love planet Venus in retrograde this month, you will be reevaluating your previous romantic choices. Sounds like a dumb concept. Why would you want to review relationships that failed? Venus can take a hike! Go find something new. Cancer (June 22 – July 22) Things are becoming more official in your love life. That crush is now official on Facebook, a ring is about to be placed, and that pregnancy test is coming back positive. Wow, that’s a busy month. I’m hoping I’m wrong because it sounds like stress. Leo (July 23 – August 22) Feisty and frisky this month. Friends will start becoming the type with “benefits” this month. Coupled Leos will start to spice things up. It’s a good month to be a Leo. Virgo (August 23 – September 22) This month could recycle an old drama and open an old emotional wound. Or even better, bring a shady but fun ex back and fire up the ol’ spice in your life. Libra (September 23 – October 22) After your mojo has been hibernating, it awakens this month with a furious curiosity. With your energy focused, it’s time you start meeting new singles as oppose to the usual, well, boring people you have been with.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) For those Scorpio who have been looking for a soulmate, this may be your month. Your eighth house of intimacy is sharing with your coupling house. I don’t even understand that, but it translates to you finding a soulmate soon. Hooray soulmate!

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21) People you date this month will seem immature. May want to try and date some older people to mix it up. You never know, going to the earlier bird special and senior discounts could be fun. At the very least, you will save some money. Capricorn (December 22 – January 19) Work has been all you know recently, so it’s time to loosen that tie and seek adventure outside of work. There are no planets in retrograde that affect you this month, so go nuts. Seek out one of the other signs who are all fired up and light a spark. Aquarius (January 20 – February 18) If you want that crush to notice you, you are going to have to come up with something creative. Let it all hang out this month and see if that garners attention. I am sure someone will notice you, if not the crush, which isn’t always a bad thing. Pisces (February 19 – March 20) It should be a high-energy month for you. If you can keep up with the pace, you should be able to find a few quality dates out of it. I know, I don’t believe it either,e Pisces. What brought you to Jacksonville?
How do you stay connected to the Jacksonville community? I just recently stepped down from eleven years on the Board of Trustees of St. Mark’s Episcopal Day School, and I am currently on the Board of Trustees of Angels for Allison. I am also an adjunct professor at Florida Coastal School of Law.
How did you choose your area of law? My first job was with the Office of the Public Defender, and I have practiced criminal defense ever since.
What is your greatest accomplishment as an attorney? When a client is happy with what we have done, it is our greatest accomplishment. We don’t judge our accomplishments with how many trial victories or big settlements. Every day I walk into my office and I look at a bookcase filled with thank you notes and pictures of clients. Each of those notes, pictures, and memories have equal value as our greatest accomplishments. Each reminds us every day that we have been blessed with the opportunity to help people who need help.
What is a frequently asked question you receive from your clients? A day does not go by without being asked, “What do I do if I am stopped by the police and I have been drinking?”
