T

he University of Virginia (UVA) and the Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello presented their highest external honors—the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medals in Architecture, Law, Citizen Leadership and Global Innovation—during their joint Founder’s Day activities earlier this year. UVA has celebrated Jefferson’s birthday, referred to as “Founder’s Day,” since its first academic season in 1825. Each medal recognizes exemplary contributions in endeavors that Jefferson held in high regard. The 2016 Thomas Jefferson Medal for Architecture was presented to Cecil Balmond in recognition of his innovation in the field, melding engineering and architecture to create iconic geometric structures and sculptures.
