The Arts & Music Scene

Art That Moves You Surrealist painter Salvador Dali said, “A true artist is not one who is inspired, but one who inspires others.” Whatever medium may inspire or provoke you, galleries and artwork abound here in Charlottesville. Each first Friday of the month, local galleries and other venues on the Downtown Mall open their doors to display works of art in the popular First Friday Artwalk.

The University of Virginia’s Fralin Museum of Art provides a sophisticated, high-tech home for the art contained within its historic walls. Alongside the permanent exhibits this fall, explore special exhibits “The Great War: Printmakers of World War I from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.” It will include prints by British and American artists that depict life on the homefront, combat and the aftermath of World War I. Other unique local treasures of art are the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia, Frederick Nichols studio, gallery and workshop in Barboursville, Chroma Projects, Les Yeux du Monde’s eclectic gallery just off Route 20 and the Artisans Studio Tour. From folk art to fine art, contemporary to classical, and whether it be local or imported, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
