NEWS Victoria is looking forward to working on the project in Tanzania

TAKING THE TWO MOORS WAY TO TANZANIA The Two Moors Way to Tanzania is the unique journey one young Ivybridge woman is about to embark on. Victoria Andreassen, 22, is set to walk the 89 mile trail from Lynmouth to Ivybridge, across the challenging terrain of Exmoor and Dartmoor, as the finale of her fundraising efforts for her place on a Raleigh ICS project in the East African country. She is aiming to complete the ‘Way’ in five days, walking around 18 miles per day and camping on the moor at night, starting out from Lynmouth on Wednesday, 15th February, and walking into Ivybridge on Sunday, 19th February. That is just a month before Victoria, together with other volunteers, fly to Tanzania to begin a 12-week project in a Tanzanian village.

The Livelihoods Project, one of many run by Raleigh ICS, aims to help young adults gain business skills and knowledge so that they can benefit their communities. Despite Tanzania’s rapidly growing economy, poverty is still a huge issue, with 900,000 young adults entering the workforce every year, but only being 50,000 jobs being available. “It is common for people of my age to leave their homes and go to bigger cities or even other countries to look for work,” explains Victoria. “But this is weakening the communities they are leaving behind. “While on the Livelihoods Project, I will be living in a Tanzanian home with a host family and working with local villagers developing business ideas that will benefit the community.

“I will be part of a team of 12, half from the UK and half native to Tanzania.” For the past four months, Victoria has been busily raising money to fund her place on the project. She has sold handmade bracelets and pendants, had generous donations from friends and family, and, following a presentation to Ivybridge Rotary Club, has had their help as well. After speaking at two local schools, Erme Primary and Sparkwell Primary have also supported Victoria by holding dress-up days to help raise funds. Fairtrade fun Fairtrade Fortnight starts this month and Ivybridge, the first town in the South Hams to achieve Fairtrade Town status, will be marking it with host of events. Taking place between 27th February and 12th March, activities include a chocolate-themed stall outside the Co-op (4th March), a Fairtrade service at St John’s Church (5th March), Ivybridge Methodist Church will also be marking Fairtrade Fortnight on 12th March, and a Fairtrade wine tasting event is also being planned. Two Ghanaian cocoa producers will visit Ivybridge CC (28th February) to explain the positive effect buying Fairtrade chocolate has for farmers in producing countries. î Details of these and other Fairtrade events will be the March issue. Busiest Christmas for Foodbank Ivybridge foodbank fed more families than ever this Christmas thanks to the generosity of local people, schools and supermarkets. They were also able to give families gifts and an extra food hamper alongside the food parcel they would normally receive. The work of the Foodbank goes on every week and consequently they are always looking for volunteers to help in a variety of ways. Latest news from Ivybridge Town Council As Mayor of Ivybridge, I want to say a huge thank you to all those people who volunteered, donated or gave us sponsorship for our Christmas Day party at The Watermark. It is hard to single out individuals or generous donations because without the collective contribution it just wouldn’t happen, but I must thank Cllr Ray Wilson and his wife Jan who cooked the superb food for the day – working not only all Christmas Day but also the day before in preparation. I must mention Gribble’s Butchers and Erme Lodge who gave us generous donations, and the wonderful entertainment from Brian Marshall. Sue Aust from Ivybridge Caring not only transported people on the day, served food and generally turned her hand to any task but had been at the heart of co-ordinating the list of those attending. The quiz at The Sportsman’s before Christmas hosted by Steve Buckle raised £150 towards the day. (The full list of sponsors/supporters is on the Town Council website.) The guests very generously gave donations to my charities, the local branch of the Royal British Legion and Devon Air Ambulance. But most of all, team Ivybridge has demonstrated once again that it cares for those who would otherwise be on their own. Thank you all who gave of their time to make it such a fantastic event. NEWS COFFEE AND CREPES TO SUPPORT THE ALZHEIMER’S SOCIETY Ivybridge Trefoil Guild is inviting people to a Coffee and Crepes (and Bacon Rolls) morning to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society. It is taking place on Saturday, 25th February, in St John’s Church Hall between 10am and 1pm, and will be just £5. The Trefoil Guild is part of the Girlguiding movement, and is aimed at adults who support the Girlguiding ethos. Members are encouraged to get involved both in guiding and community activities, be active and most importantly, find friendship. Ivybridge Trefoil Guild meets on the first Wednesday of the month, between 10am-12noon at Abbeyfield House, and during the evening on the second Monday of the month, when, during the summer months, they usually have a walk and pub meal. The Guild is, once again, supporting the Alzheimers’s Society,

EVENTS FOR VOLUNTARY GROUPS Varied artisans Forums and workshops to support local voluntary groups have been announced by South Hams CVS. A volunteer organisers’ forum will take place on Monday, 6th February, from 10am to 12.30pm in Ivybridge Town Hall. It will look at how to use the Volunteer Connect Devon system to promote volunteering opportunities. The forum is free, but booking is essential – contact kate@devonva.org by 2nd February. An ‘Introduction to being a Charity Trustee’ is being held on 7th February, 10am to 1pm, at the South Hams CVS meeting room at Follaton House, Totnes. This workshop will help anyone new to being a

Trustee, or considering the role, to understand the role better. Learn how to use the web better at the Google Digital Garage on 13th February, 2-4pm, is also at the South Hams CVS meeting room. ‘Making Excel work for your group’ on 27th February, 10am1pm, in the Beacon Room at Ivybridge Library, will help you make the most of this software. ‘Supervising your Staff’ is a workshop for anyone managing paid staff. The market takes place on the first and third Saturday of every month in the upstairs hall in The Watermark. Ivybridge Artisan Market hosts a varied and interesting list of traders, supplying handmade goods including baked goods, paintings, photographs, useful bags, cushions, felting, candles, preserves, wood turned objects, fused glass items, and silver jewellery and much more, too numerous to list. New ‘artisans’ are set to start soon, which will add further to the variety of merchandise the market has on offer. A space for the community

By Hannah Whiting - Co-op Community Pioneer Co-ops across the country have been getting more involved with their local communities, and membership is just one of the ways we are giving back. Every time members buy a Co-op own brand product, the Co-op donates 1% of the price to local causes. It may not sound much, but the amount we have raised in Ivybridge has surprised us all; each of the store’s chosen charities – Ivybridge Caring, Ivybridge Ring & Ride and Erme Valley Riding for the Disabled – have now got a total of almost £1,000! So, if you aren’t already a member, next time you are in-store be sure to ask to join our membership scheme – it is only £1! We are running a raffle to raise money for Ivybridge Theatre Company, which is performing Cinderella at The Watermark this month (see page 14). We are giving customers a chance to win two tickets to the panto and an Irresistible Co-op Hamper! All you have to do is ask about raffle tickets at any of our till points, and at 50p a strip it is not to be missed! We are hosting a Valentine’s fundraiser throughout February titled ‘Blind Date with a Book’. There will be a display of books which customers can buy for a minimum donation of 50p, but the twist is, you won’t be able to see the covers! The books will be wrapped up with just one quote written on the front. It is an exciting fundraiser for local charity Moorvision, which provides activities and support for children with visual impairments and their families. The Clay Factory Diaries

Ivybridge Flower Club was represented at Buckland Abbey’s Christmas floral display, ‘The First Nowell’, exhibited in the Great Barn, during December. There were nine displays composed of six Angels, the Shepherds, the Wise men and the Nativity. Three club members chose to create a medieval theme with a six foot wicker angel decorated with red flowers, white floral arrangements on each side, bordered by logs covered in foliage and white flowers.

SPRING INTO NEW YEAR

Members of Ivybridge Flower Club were entertained at their first meeting of the New Year by Amanda Randell, a florist living in Tavistock and gold medal winner at Chelsea at her first attempt, with a demonstration entitled “Spring Nests”. Each arrangement consisted of a different design element of floristry, each included a nest and maybe one or two small birds. Her spring flowers and foliage were well conditioned and used with great effect. Members were reminded to purchase tickets for the annual quiz, to be held at Ivybridge Rugby Club on Monday, 27th February. The quiz is open to everyone with teams up to a maximum of 6 persons. Tickets are £8, including a light supper, and are available

WASTE OF A WASTE

“Incineration, a Waste of a Waste” is the title of the talk by Peter Brooks at February’s general meeting of Ivybridge U3A on Monday, 20th February, at 2 pm. at The Watermark. What a start to the year! We have had it all up David’s lane... fog, wind, rain, ice and even the odd snow flake. Which makes it sound like we reside in one of the most inhospitable places known to Ivybridge but we like to think it all adds to the atmosphere ‘up the lane by the big chimney’. In fact, as I write this edition of The Clay Factory diaries I’m watching the clouds roll over the moors in a very moody and evocative way. So what’s on the agenda this month? Well, quite simply we’re talking about the unique spaces we have within the walls of The Clay Factory and how they could benefit the community and the people that live in and around Ivybridge. For those of you that don’t know, as well as our artists’ studios, self-contained offices and workshop spaces, we have meeting rooms, conference spaces and training facilities up at The Clay Factory that can be used for local businesses and also for members of the community who might want to put on a community event or need somewhere to run their community group. The Clay Factory site was once a central part of the community and we genuinely want to put this truly unique space back at the heart of that community. Therefore, we’d love you to come forward with your ideas of how you could use the spaces to benefit the people of Ivybridge and the surrounding communities. The clouds are still rolling over the moors as I write, the wind has picked up, though, and is serenading me as I prepare to say ‘that’s all folks’. What a great place to spend some time pondering all that’s good in the world. Our visit from the Dogs Trust, by Maddie Turner and Beth Hooker Stacey Prosser from the Dogs Trust visited the Erme Primary School to tell us all about what they do as a charity. After explaining to the whole school what the Dogs Trust does, she went to all of the classes and talked about being safe around dogs. She also told us how to treat them properly. To show us, she brought in a teddy Labrador. Later on, at break time, she came up to the top playground and Stacey was very impressed with our behaviour. After break time, Stacey came to year 6 to speak about how we should behave around dogs and she taught us about how to treat been mistreated. Little nicely. SCHOOL REPORTS

Year 5 and 6 children at Manor Primary School performed a wonderful re-working of a traditional fairy tale with their production, Cinderella and Rockerfella. The artist formerly known as Prince Charming made his final appearance in Ivybridge before retiring to the relative obscurity of his royal life. Sadly, Cinderella did not have a ticket for the post-concert party... that is, until a string of trainee welly-wearing

fairies, best-friend Buttons, a talking dog and a glamorous Fairy Godmother stepped in to save the day and ensure that love triumphed. It was a very professional-looking production, with outstanding acting by the young cast and enthusiastic singing that really raised the roof. Alongside confident lead-soloists – Cinderella played by Harriet, Saffy as Rockerfella, Emily as the Fairy Godmother, Harvey as Dandini

and Paige as Buttons) – every child was very much part of the stunning show. The Ugly Sisters, Blake and Thomas delivered their lines with comic timing whilst wearing outlandish wigs and costumes, under the evil-spell of Fairy Nasty Boots (played with dramatic conviction by Abi). Efficient stage hands made sure everything ran smoothly. The children sang with gusto, with fantastic props and smiles of enthusiasm all round.

Rochelle’s River Café is the new café, bistro and bar by the river in Glanvilles Mill What was the Riverbank is now in the experienced and capable hands of a well-established catering family who currently own and run the renowned Chloe’s Restaurant & Bistro in Plymouth. Jo and Didier Franchet, together with daughters Chloe (13) and Rochelle (10), have taken over the prime waterside site in the heart of Ivybridge. The established clientelle and excellent reputation previous owner Fabrice had nurtured was a big reason why the family was so keen to buy the café. Maintaining and building on this is at the heart of what Jo and the family want to do – “it will be evolution, not revolution” says Jo. As well as opening on Mondays, due to popular demand, a big change passers-by will no doubt have noticed already is the re-introduction of outside seating in Glanvilles Mill. The chairs, tables and parasols have been put back outside the front of the café, so customers can again sit outside, inside and on the terrace overlooking the river. Dogs are welcome on the terrace overlooking the river and at any of the seating outside. Subtle changes to the menu are starting to be introduced, but all the old favourites – such as soups, paninis and specials – are still available. Take-away options will soon be highlighted to show that many options, such as the Breakfast Baps and the Chicken and Beef Burgers, as well as Baguettes and Crepes, can be ordered in advance (just drop in and order/pay and they will get it ready for you to collect at your requested time). Homemade Cakes and Tea, Coffee and Hot Chocolates are also always available to take-away Monday-Saturday from 8.30am. The menus are also being updated to more clearly show dishes which are Gluten Free (GF) and Vegetarian (V). The already comprehensive drinks menu has been enhanced, too, with an increased selection of wine, spirits and local beers, allowing people to enjoy lunch or a light bite with something a 16

little stronger than just a coffee, or perhaps celebrate a special occasion with some bubbles! There will also be an improved “Poppet’s Menu” with more suitable dishes. Children are welcome in the café, and Rochelle, who is at the café most Saturdays (term time) between 1-3pm will be happy to do colouring and drawing with any young children visiting with family. crayons and pens!! Jo is delighted that the outside seating in Glanvilles Mill has been re-instated. “The chairs, tables and parasols have already added a brightness and character to the interior of the Mill, which was lacking since they were removed over a year ago. “I hope the brighter, busier vibe outside the café helps show locals, as well as people considering opening a business in the town, that Ivybridge is lively and bustling and a great place to visit, shop and

chill out with friends and family.” Didier and Jo have been running Chloe’s in Plymouth for 12 years. They are looking forward to working with the existing team of Hendrick, Wendy, Molly, Justin, Vahid and Jim to further advance the café for Ivybridge. They are also keen to meet as many local residents as possible, and are open to any suggestions for what people would like to see in the future at Rochelle’s. However, during times of greater anxiety, your brain interprets the stress as a mortal danger in your environment. This would have made sense a thousand years ago, in the environment your brain is designed for. Your brain may therefore decide it is safer for you to stay awake. If you do sleep with a “full stress bucket”, your worries will be worked upon by your brain. This processing can further disturb your sleep. We know this is happening when we are woken around 2 to 4am quite miserable, and find it hard to get back to sleep. When this happens we may fail to process all our worries, and wake up tired and foggy. This becomes a vicious cycle of sleep deprivation and underlying stress. Our fitness regimes are often hindered by injury, which then stop us from achieving our goals says Nic Costiff One of the biggest complaints I see when people start a new training programme is back pain. Modern life is one of the biggest contributing factors leading to the development of lower back pain (LBP). People are far more sedentary, spending extended periods at a desk, driving etc. Sitting in itself is bad for the human body; aware of this, some of us then go off to do exercise, assuming that this will keep us fit. But the body begs to differ and it comes as a surprising shock when we start to get back ache. A lot of back pain is classified as mechanical lower back pain, and specific movements aggravate the back. It usually occurs when

a force has caused a movement beyond normal ranges. It could be one particular incident, or, more often, a result of constant stress applied to the back. Sometimes poor posture causes the body to produce an inflammatory response. These chemicals irritate nerves that increase your sensitivity to pain, turning something that may have been a minor sprain into something that lingers for days or even weeks. The key to resolving back pain is to find the cause of your symptoms – ie what is making your pain occur – rather than locating the source of the symptoms. There are numerous factors that can lead to lower back pain. Some of the common ones are: • Tight muscles, especially the hamstrings or hip flexors • Weak abdominal and gluteal muscles • Poor balance, co-ordination & posture • Poor bending and lifting technique • Poor equipment, ie shoes, poor bike set up

Now the New Year is well and truly here, I think it is time for most of us to reflect on what we have done in the past year, and what we have not got around to which we must really start on now. Putting our affairs in order is always important because if we don’t do it now it may suddenly be too late. A few things to think about are: Is my Will up to date? Does it fully reflect my wishes? Does it fully protect my family? Unfortunately, many Wills do not fully protect those that are left behind, so it is a good thing to now have a discussion about this. A Will can only do so much, and these days it is becoming increasingly important to protect assets for the family by use of a trust. For most people the family home is the major asset to consider. Getting contractual terms right By Stephen Smith, Solicitor at Howard & Over

Whether buying food at a supermarket, or a new car from a dealership, travelling on a bus, or buying a new house, all these transactions are governed by the same basic principles of contract law. Contracts can be made verbally, by actions taken, in writing or a combination of the above. There are a few basic requirements for a contract to be binding. There needs to be an offer capable of being accepted, that offer needs to be accepted, and there must be the passing of what the law calls consideration; essentially the subject of the exchange taking place. There are other requirements, but an offer, acceptance and the passing of consideration are at the heart of almost all contracts. Contracts can be broken down into terms, both express, that is, openly stated (verbally or written down), or implied by law whether the parties openly discuss it or not. Contractual terms are often drafted by the person providing the goods/

service and are generally going to be protective of the service provider. To deal with the inherent imbalance of power, several important implied terms are included in consumer contracts under acts of parliament – such as the Consumer Rights Act 2015, the Sale of Goods Act 1979 and the Supply of Goods and Service Act 1982. If you sign a written contract, it will be taken that you have read, and agreed to, the terms, whether you’ve read them or not, so always exercise caution. Be wary of verbal representations seeking to mitigate adverse consequences of the written terms. Many contracts contain a clause(s) which will seek to exclude these at the time of entering the contract. If you are dealing with contracts of substantial value, or are unsure as to the obligations that you are entering into, it may be worthwhile getting some legal advice regarding the contract. As many of us now use a company to trade through, it’s always worthwhile looking at the different options of drawing money in the most tax efficient way. There are basically three options: 1) Salary – this is a trading expense for corporation tax, so will reduce the company’s tax liability. The employee will pay income tax on anything above £11,000 at 20% (above £43,000 it’s 40%), but NI starts at £8,060 at 12%, so you’re actually taxed at 32% on any salary above £11,000! Furthermore, the company pays NI on earnings above £8,112 at 13.8%, so higher salaries are probably not a good idea. I would always suggest paying a salary of at least £8,060 as this ensures you still get a credit towards your state pension and other state benefits.

2) Dividends – these will not attract corporation tax relief. The first £5,000 per year is not taxed, basic rate tax payers will then pay 7.5%, higher rate payers 32.5%. There is no NI on dividends, so still appealing, although sadly not as good as they were. My advice here would be to ensure both husband and wife have shares. 3) Pensions – employer contributions will attract tax relief in the company, and no tax or NI on the individual at the time of the contribution. The funds then sit in you pension fund until you are 55, at which time up to 25% can be drawn tax free. The rest can also be drawn out at your marginal rate of tax to buy that Ferrari you always wanted. If left in the pension pot then it can be passed down to the next generation and fall outside of your estate for IHT. Farm to Fork This month marks the start of a new year of in-store Farm to Fork trails. The trails are part of Tesco’s Eat Happy Project, which has seen over 1.3 million children enjoy a ‘Eat Happy’ experience. The project provides free activities for parents, teachers and youth leaders to help children build a healthier, happier relationship with food. We run regular Farm to Fork trails in store, which have been designed by teachers and are curriculum based. The healthy eating trail helps children learn about healthy food choices and the importance of a healthy, balanced diet. It also shows them where to find nutritional information about what they eat. The sustainability trail helps children learn how to care for our planet through responsible sourcing of foods. The food for fuel trail helps children to learn about the food they should eat to give them energy for sports and games. They also get to explore the store, visit the bakery, cheese and fish counters and go ‘behind the scenes’ visiting the warehouse and chillers. Afterwards, they get to taste fruit vegetables, cheese and different types of bread. We also offer seasonal trails, which are great fun. If schools and groups are unable to visit the store we take the trail to the classroom. Last year I had lots of fun at schools, preschools, cubs and brownies. The Eat Happy Project website – www.eathappyproject.com – provides over 1,000 curriculum based resources. There are also cook-along videos and recipes, rainy day activities and downloadable games and crafts. The parents section is worth exploring, too. Community RANGERS Dartmoor is a fantastic place to get outside and enjoy yourself, says Andrea Roberts We are so lucky to have such a great place on our doorstep. Every year, thousands of people, locals and visitors alike, take to the moors. With over 60% of Dartmoor as open public access, and with nearly 500 miles of footpath and bridleways, the opportunities are endless. Public rights of way on Dartmoor provide a legal right for people to use at any time. Used responsibly and by following the Countryside Code, people should have minimal impact on farming operations or other use of land. Equally, the public should be able to use public rights of way without interference or inconvenience. The categories of public rights of way on Dartmoor include: • Public Footpath – Public use on foot only • Public Bridleway – Public use on foot, horse and cycle • Byway Open To All Traffic (BOAT) – Public use on foot, horse, cycle, carriage drivers and motor vehicles. It’s important that users recognise these different paths and their legal status. For instance, in Ivybridge the footpaths around Longtimber Woods / River Erme are great for people to combine the paths to make a nice circular walk, or to join other paths to walk out to Harford, or to simply mooch up and down the riverside. Unfortunately, it seems that cyclists are also using these paths, illegally, upsetting other users and the landowners. If you are a cyclist, only ride where you are legally permitted to do so – which does not include Longtimber Woods. Dartmoor offers a mix of traffic-free trails, quiet forest tracks, bridleways and historic rural lanes, as well as more exciting and challenging bridleways offering great offroad opportunities. Ugborough Football Club raised an amazing Harriers turned out in force at the popular £209 from a raffle and auction. In the first major road race of the New Year, the Harriers had many fine performances at the First Chance 10K in Exeter. The ladies did well, too, with Alison Thorn (38.00) 3rd lady and 2nd fv40, and Cleo Perry (39.11) was 3rd fv40.
