news BRINGING BOOKS TO YOU A popular home library service is calling on book lovers to use the free service more in the Ivybridge area. Devon Home Library Service, run by Royal Voluntary Service, the national volunteering organisation, is also looking for more volunteers to bring books to them and a volunteer co-ordinator to oversee and promote the service in Ivybridge area. The service delivers books to people who can no longer get to a library due to mobility issues, ill health or caring responsibilities. RVS volunteers choose and deliver books, sharing their love of reading with their ‘readers’ They provide a friendly face and regular visitor to people whose mobility and social interaction may be limited. The provision can be long-term or temporary, including those who may suffer a condition whereby they can visit the library themselves on a good day but at other times, cannot. Some readers choose their books online and

volunteers deliver them. Books can be provided in normal print, large print, audio and, increasingly, electronic formats. Cathy Saunders, service manager for Devon Home Library Service, says: “For people who enjoy reading or listening to an audio recording but find getting to the library challenging, this service offers a vital link to books. The volunteer’s visit can help alleviate feelings of isolation and loneliness.

TOUGHER PENALTIES FOR IRRESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERS

“We want to reach more rural areas, to be able to link even more people to libraries enabling them to benefit from this free service” To find out more about the service or if you are interested in becoming a volunteer co-ordinator or volunteer, contact Cathy Saunders on 07786 635163, email cathy.saunders@royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk, visit www. royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk or contact your local library.

South Hams District Council is cracking down on dog owners who have their dogs off the lead in public areas, or who don’t clean up after their dogs. Public Space Protection Orders have been introduced across the South Hams, clarifying where it will be mandatory to keep dogs on a lead. In addition, the new laws give authorised council officers the power to request that an owner place their dog on a lead in any open public area where the dog is causing a nuisance or likely to do so. Failure to comply with the PSPO or a request from a council officer is punishable by an onthe-spot fine of £100. Uniformed officers will be patrolling regularly from early July. Failure to clean up after your dog is also covered and is punishable by an on-the-spot fine of £100.

The organisers of Christian Aid Week for Ivybridge and Bittaford would like to thank everyone who contributed in any way. This year’s collection raised £6,636 for Christian Aid.

NEW LIONS CHAIR John Martin is the new president of the Lions Club of Ivybridge, taking over from Andrew Willis. John, 39, has been a club member for three years and was attracted to the Lions after attending the club’s annual fun days. Indeed, John’s first duty was to preside over this year’s Fun Day at the end of June, which supported South Western Ambulance Foundation Trust Community First Responders and Moorvision, who provide support for children and young persons with visual impairment or other recognised eye conditions. Ivybridge Lions welcome new members, who are invited to attend the club meetings, which are held on the second and fourth Thursday of every month at The Watermark, starting at 7.30pm.

STROKE AWARENESS The Rotary Club of Ivybridge participated in a stroke awareness project by setting up a stand at the Flete point-to-point . Sixty-eight people were seen by Dr Paul Fletcher and two nurses, 22 had high blood pressure, of which six were advised to see their own GP as soon as possible and one was advised to go to hospital as soon as possible.

Seven local schools from the South Devon Primary Partnership – Manor, Sparkwell, The Erme, Cornwood, Shaugh Prior, Ermington and Ugborough – recently took part in a joint project focusing on ‘Big Blue Planet’, learning about the dangers of plastic and other litter to the environment. The schools received an inspirational introductory assembly from Tim Poate, of Plastic Free Ivybridge, and

also watched clips from David Attenborough’s Blue Planet series. They then went on to take part in a range of activities, including litter picking in their local areas, visits to shops and supermarkets to investigate packaging, writing letters to local businesses and politicians, investigating how to reduce packaging in their lunch boxes and projects focusing on maths, science, art and DT.

Children also joined with their peers from across the partnership for joint school projects, including a music day at Manor Primary School and two joint art days at Sparkwell and The Erme. The schools have either achieved or are working towards ‘plastic free’ status, and the children will continue with this theme going into next year.

NOMINATE YOUR UNSUNG HERO Nominations are now open for this year’s David Britton Citizen of the Year Award and Nick Cummins Community Group of the Year Award. These prestigious awards are for individuals and groups whom Ivybridge Town Council feel have provided an invaluable input into the community and have made a difference through their involvement in the town. There are many unsung heroes who work, often behind the

scenes, making a real impact on the community. The council urges people to think who would be worthy recipients of the Citizens Award and the Community Group of the Year Award. Qualifying criteria includes individuals and groups who solely volunteer within the community and, as in previous years, the award can go to people living outside the town although they must have provided a service valued by people in Ivybridge.

Nominations will be considered by the council at its October meeting and the winners will receive a presentation from the mayor towards the end of the year. i To nominate an individual or group, write to Ivybridge Town Council, Erme Court, Leonards Road, Ivybridge, PL21 0SZ (or email lindsay lane@ivybridge.gov.uk) giving full details of name/group, address and reasons why they should be put forward. Also include your own name and address.

THOMAS’ TRIATHLON TRIUMPH

SENIORS HAVE A VOICE AGAIN Members of a ‘dormant’ community action group for the over 50s are being urged to engage with a new group and help make sure the voice of senior citizens is heard once more. Following the ‘marriage’ of Devon Senior Voice (DSV) and the Community Council of Devon at the end of May, David Snelling, former chair of the Ivybridge branch of DSV, is appealing to previous members to contact him in order to continue the activities dealing with issues affecting the over 50s in Ivybridge, which

is now being supported by ‘Devon communities together’. “Celebrating the resurgence of one of the most active groups in Ivybridge has to be one of the highlights of this year so far,” said David. The development comes 11 years on from when 35 community-spirited over-50s, recognising the impending demographic time bomb which was to affect their age group, met in Old Chapel Place to discuss forming a group to champion the needs of senior citizens in the Ivybridge area.

CLASSIC CARS BENEFIT MARIE CURIE The annual ‘drive it day’ display of classic and interesting vehicles by Devon Vintage Car Club held at Endsleigh Garden Centre in April raised £121 for the centre’s designated charity, Marie Curie. Pictured (l-r) are: Mike Oakins (organiser), Alan Kempster (chairman DVCC), Kelly Edwards and Christine Pascoe (from Endsleigh).

With an ever-increasing awareness of the need to maintain a quality of life, the number of members grew to 180, some being pro-active but most happy to have a way to air their concerns. David is now calling on past members of DSV to support this unique, new organisation and help ensure continuity of action on the issues affecting residents of the larger Ivybridge area. i David Snelling can be contact-

Ivybridge Community College Year 7 student Thomas Jones has been selected to compete at the Inter-Regional Junior Triathlon Championships in Leicestershire in September. The call-up is a result of his performance at the SW Regional Championships at the end of June, when he came sixth overall. Competing in the 13-14 age category, Thomas was one of the youngest competitors in the category. He has also been invited to a training camp at Mount Kelly towards the end of the summer holidays.

The untold stories of how the South Devon farming community adapted to the challenges of the 1914-1918 war are revealed at a commemorative exhibition at the Devon Rural Archive. In early August 1914, newspapers nationwide printed appeals for volunteers to join the British Army. Lord Kitchener, the newly-appointed Secretary of State for War, sought to recruit 100,000 extra men from across the country. His plan was to strengthen the existing British Expeditionary Force with a series of ‘new armies’. By 12 September 1914, nearly 500,000 young men, from all walks of life, had answered Kitchener’s call to arms – to fight for King and Country. One of those young men was 18-year-old Walter Reginald Penwill from Harford. He was recruited into the 5th Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment, which was posted to Lahore in India, to relieve units of the regular army from garrison duty. Walter, known as Jack, had worked as a farm boy from a young age, helping with the planting and harvesting until he reached the age of 13 or 14, when he left school to join the permanent workforce. His absence would have been felt by his family, and also the farmer who had previously relied on his labour. The loss of young, skilled labour is just one of the challenges that faced the local farming community during the four-year conflict. They had a responsibility to feed not only their own families but also a nation at war, at a time when many were still recovering from the agricultural depression of the late 19th century. More women had to take on farm work and, in early 1917, the Women’s Land Army was formed.

Even with a reduction in horsepower (owing to the requisitioning of horses for the war effort), the resilience of South Devon’s farming community was evident, given that they successfully maintained their productivity, and met the increasing demands of war. The exhibition, which runs throughout 2018, has been created by staff and volunteers at the DRA using historic land management documents from the archive collection, including tenancy agreements, stock information, sale details and letters between the farmers and their land agents.

THE VEITCH LEGACY An illustrated talk by Veitch historian Caradoc Doy Thursday, 2nd August, 2018, at the Devon Rural Archive – starting at 7pm. After arriving in Devon in the late 1700s to lay out the new grounds at Killerton House for the Acland family, the Scottish horticulturist John Veitch set up his own nursery and established what was to become one of the most remarkable horticultural dynasties in Britain. Owing to the pioneering work of his son James, the firm

These sources were complemented by additional information from census returns, pre- and post-war trade directories, military service records and historic newspapers to create a picture of life between 1914 and 1918 in South Devon. The display has been funded by the Devon Remembers Heritage Project, which gives people the

sent 23 plant collectors around the globe in search of new and exotic plants that would be in high demand with the Victorian gardening elite. Five generations of the family took charge of the nursery business, which was also involved in advising and creating fine landscapes and gardens. They introduced many hundreds of new plants, created the first official orchid hybrid and oversaw the arrival of the Wellingtonia tree. In this illustrated talk, Caradoc Doy will summarise the story of this remarkable firm, giving an account of the rise of the Veitch Nurseries from

chance to explore the county’s WWI experience and share stories about life 100 years ago. Entry to the exhibition is free. i Devon Rural Archive at Shilstone,

PLAYHOUSE PROJECT Children from The Erme Primary School are lucky enough to be involved in The Playhouse Project this year, an exciting opportunity that allowed them to perform their end of year play, Big Small Lost Found Things, in the Drum at the Theatre Royal Plymouth. The cast was made up of the entire year 5/6, with every child included in the play, having the opportunity to take on a speaking role, regardless of ability, background and disposition. The children have been heavily involved in directing the play, suggesting their own ideas for how to portray their character and the story. The play is about the struggle of growing ‘old’ as you move from primary to

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM On 17 July, Yealmpton Primary School held a special concert, ‘We Will Remember Them’, to commemorate 100 years since the end of WWI and to give thanks to those who gave their lives. The school also unveiled its art memorial of 170 ceramic poppies, which were made by all of the children in the school. Reg Wilkinson, chairman of the Brixton and District Royal British Legion, was guest of honour,

which comprised songs and poems from the Great War, including favourites such as ‘Keep the Home Fires Burning’, Rudyard Kipling’s ‘Tommy’ and, of course ‘For the Fallen’ by Laurence Binyon. Afterwards, Reg planted the final ceramic poppy in the art installation. Reg and the Legion will be visiting the Menin Gate in August, taking with them a wreath bearing the message ‘Yealmpton Primary School remembers them’.

SPORTS DAY South Brent Primary School are the Ventrus Multi Academy Trust Sports Day champions. Held at Exeter Arena, for most of the children it was the first time that they had set foot on a full-size athletics track. The children competed in track events including 100m sprint, 80m hurdles and 4x100m relay to field events such as long jump and vortex throwing. The children waited with baited breath as the results were read out before finally, the children were informed that they were the champions. CHURCH VISITS The children at Cornwood School have been able to visit the village church and learn about the beautiful stained glass windows. Members of the church took time to research and tell hem about the Bible stories and the history behind them. The children were very excited to see the coats of arms that relate to the four house groups in school. The children then had a go at drawing some of the designs.

REAL SCIENCE Year 3 and 4 at Manor Primary have become the first children in the area to participate in the Plantlife Future Scientists Programme, which is part of the ‘Building Resilience in South West Woodlands’ project. The aim of the programme is to help deliver the science curriculum through outdoor learning, while also gathering real scientific data on Devon’s internationally-important Atlantic woodlands, of which Longtimber Woods is a prime example. Led by woodland ranger Alison Smith, the children undertook a Woodland Habitat Survey, observ-

12_TIM_Aug18.indd 12

ing and recording the different types of mosses and lichens in the woods. The children then used their skills with a compass and tape measure to find out whether the mosses and lichens were growing on the north or south side of trees; this data is important when assessing the condition of woodland habitats, as a tree with plenty of lichen on the trunk indicates that sufficient light is getting into the woods, whereas a tree with moss all the way around indicates a lack of natural light. The children were delighted to be performing ‘real science’ and enjoyed collecting data to help protect and preserve Longtimber Woods for future generations.

SUMMER GAMES Thirty children from South Brent Primary School went to the Active Devon Summer Games, effectively a multi-sport county final. Squads qualified from the Dartmoor School Sport Partnership (DSSP) finals in both athletics and golf to secure their County Final position. The standard of athletics was very high, but nevertheless the children applied themselves well, with some superb individual performances and team ethic to eventually finish a superb seventh best in the county. The golf squad, new to the sport when they qualified from the DSSP finals, gave it their all and were rewarded with a superb fifth-placed finish in the whole of Devon. Alongside the finals, the school took its superstars group to experience ‘elite level’ sport and to have a go at a range of sports that the school cannot offer, such as Taiko drumming, Frisbee Golf and some rugby coaching from Plymouth Albion.

PERFECT PIZZAS Warburton’s came and spent the day with the Little Dormice and Wood mice classes at Woodlands Park Primary School. The children found out how bread is made and what foods their body needs to keep healthy. The children then got to make their own pizzas, using Warburton’s thins as its base and a range of healthy toppings.

SHILSTONE HOUSE Nestled in the rolling hills of the South Hams countryside is Shilstone House, a family home with a remarkable and extensive history. Shilstone, in the parish of Modbury, contains an array of architectural and archaeological features representing c6,000 years of human activity.

BELLS IN BLOOM Over the weekend of 3rd5th August, the Ugborough bellringers will be celebrating the return of the newly recast church bells with a Church Bells & Flower Festival entitled ‘Bells in Bloom’. The culmination of a three year appeal, which started when a crack was noticed in the No 6 bell, which raised £90,000 through a mixture of donations, fundraising events and grants. The bells were lowered in March and sent to Taylor’s of Loughborough for recasting. ‘Bells in Bloom’ will run from Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th August,

what’s on

At the heart of the site is Shilstone House, a former Domesday manor which overlays evidence of late prehistoric occupation. Formal gardens surround the dwelling and include lawns, terraces and a medieval walled garden as well as the only known seventeenth century Italianate water theatre and associated

water gardens in the UK making the site nationally important. Led by resident archaeologist Abi Gray, this guided tour of the house and grounds on Tuesday, 14th August, at 2pm will last approximately one and a half hours and will be followed by a cream tea at the Devon Rural Archive. Guests will explore the history

from 10.30am to 6pm daily. The Greenwood Consort will be performing from 2pm and 4pm on the Saturday and Sunday. Refreshments will be available. There will also be pictures on display of the journey of the bells from coming down from the tower, their recasting and return to Ugborough. It is a rare occasion for church bells to be on display, rather than installed in the tower, so people are being encouraged to come and visit.

between 9.30am and 1pm in the main hall at The Watermark, there will be a variety of art, craft and food handmade by local artisans on sale. With at least 20 stalls, it is becoming a very popular event with locals and visitors alike. Do pop along, buy local and support local artisans

Conservationists at Dartmoor Zoo have successfully bred the endangered yellow-headed day gecko in captivity following the hatching of a juvenile gecko on 25th June. The tiny baby is the first to hatch from a clutch of eggs produced by a carefully planned breeding programme which identified the valuable genetics of Dartmoor Zoo’s three adult yellow-headed day geckos. The 10-day-old youngster is currently the size of an adult’s fingertip and will be too small to sex until it is fully grown. Young geckos are fragile and can be vulnerable to disease so the new arrival will remain under the close supervision of Dartmoor Zoo keepers until it is strong

enough to be introduced to zoo visitors. When it is ready to meet the public, the diminutive lizard will be named by zoo visitors. Zoo keepers hope that their success with the yellow-headed day gecko will lead to further conservation programmes with critically-endangered reptile species including the Tanzanian electric blue gecko and golden mantella frogs. The yellow-headed day gecko is endemic to Madagascar, which is renowned for producing thousands of unique animal and plant species which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The pint-sized lizard is one of many species under threat from habitat loss as a result of deforestation.

LOTS OF LAUGHS THIS AUTUMN

The promise of an autumn of laughs is already selling tickets at The Watermark, starting with the hugely popular Zoe Lyons. On Friday, 14th September, Zoe will be bringing her Entry Level Human [age 14+] tour to Ivybridge. A regular on Mock the Week and a much-loved figure on Live at the Apollo as well as being all over BBC Radio 4 on The News Quiz, Just a Minute, The Now Show and plenty more. Back for another comedic cookery experience is the delicious George Egg on Friday, 26th October. Direct from sell outs at the Gilded Balloon, Edinburgh Fringe 2017 and Brighton Fringe 2017, and following sell out Edinburgh Fringe runs in 2015 and 2016 plus a sell-out UK tour, award-winning comedian George Egg (the ‘Anarchist Cook’) returns with a brand new show demonstrating more live cooking and laugh-outloud comedy. During an inspiring and inventive evening of stand-up, live cooking and comedy lecture, George prepares a breakfast, a lunch and a dinner using the most unconventional of methods. Making a welcome return in November is Simon Evans with his Genius Tour. Ever since he was a small boy, all Evans really wanted was to be recognised by the world as a man of genius. He has, until

@ The Watermark now, remained thwarted. The world seems increasingly indifferent to true genius of any kind, let alone Evans’. Endlessly distracted by the trivial, we allow the classical tools of grammar, logic and rhetoric to lie unregarded in the shed of consciousness, rusting to a picturesque hue that would actually look really great on Instagram. But which filter? Hmmm..., Tickets for the 17th November on sale now. Two big names already booked for 2019 are Andrew Maxwell and Mark Watson, see website for full details. So, there are plenty of laughs up for grabs at The Watermark this year – get your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

line of war, being on the edge of death, to being a happy and contented father, grandfather and national treasure. Simon Weston OBE was trapped on the burning RFA Sir Galahad after it was bombed by two Argentine planes during the Falklands War in 1982. He suffered burns to 46% of his body and lost many of his comrades. He is one of the most recognised faces of the conflict and in this show he discusses his experiences with his close friend David Fitzgerald from the BBC. Tickets are selling fast so be sure to buy yours in advance. Also speaking with David Fitzgerald later in the year is actor, director, screen writer and genius behind The Comic Strip Peter Richardson Saturday, 6th October [15].

The 24 semi final photos will be available to view in The Watermark coffee shop and you can cast your vote for your favourite at the same time. This year’s theme is “My favourite place in Ivybridge and the surrounding area”. The Ivybridge Calendar has become a perennial favourite gift

The Watermark will be offering children’s lunchboxes throughout the school holidays. In addition, for the grown-ups a ‘lunch bundle’ consisting of a wrap or a bap, a drink and chocolate bar or crisps. Full English breakfast will continue daily as well as a selection of hot meals and specials.

GABLES FUNDRAISER The school council at Woodlands Park Primary School organised a fundraiser for Gables Cats and Dogs Home. They organised cake sales for the whole school along with a big book sale. PORTALS ATHLETIC FC Portals Athletic Football Club has origins dating back to 1923 when they were known as “Cutter Stars”, playing friendlies with teams in the Ivybridge district. Portals Athletic was formed in 1926, entering the Eastern Section of the United Churches League, the origin of the Plymouth Combination League. In the 1934-35 season the team won the league. Other successes included Plymouth and District Knock-Out Cup finalists in 193738 and League Knock-Out Cup winners and League runners-up in 1938-39. There is very little information regarding Portals Athletic during the war years but it would seem that the club endeavoured to carry on, permitting anyone from Ivybridge to be part of the team. The Minutes Book from 1946 documented that some of the football kit had been loaned to the Home Guard. Later that year, in preparation for the new season, the club asked for the shirts to be returned but no-one at the Home Guard knew anything about the loan of any sports jerseys!

The

Portals Athletic AFC 1955-56 season

club’s real heyday was during the 1950s and 1960s. In late April 1956, a big crowd “defied the inclement weather to witness a game worthy of the occasion” as Portals AFC defeated Lee Mill United 3-2 to become League Champions of Division 1 East. The 1957-58 season witnessed their best performance since its formation, winning the League Trophy for their division of the Plymouth Combination League and also the League Challenge Bowl, losing only one of 36 matches played. Success continued for the next few seasons, with the 1964-65 season surpassing all that had

gone before. Becoming Division 1 Champions brought the first silverware as well as promotion to the Premier League the following year. The next trophy was the Senior Charity Cup and to cap an outstanding season, Portals Athletic went on to win the Devon Senior Cup, making them champions of Devon. The game was played at the Newton Abbot Recreation Ground against Kingsteignton Athletic, with inclement weather reducing the attendance to about 1,000 spectators. Their triple success unfortunately led to the eventual break-up of the team as other South Western League clubs moved in to sign their best players. Following a few more seasons, with only moderate success, the club eventually went out of existence. i More details about Portals Athletic

AFC, together with many other historical topics, can be found on the Ivybridge Heritage & Archives Group website

WE ARE WHAT WE... SLEEP! Sleep is the most important aspect of our daily routine, says Tiffany Armitage We use the phrases “sleep on it” or “it’ll feel better in the morning” so often, that it’s obvious really that sleep is the most important aspect of our daily routine that predicts how well we cope with the next day. After a good night’s sleep, we make decisions, stay calmer, and research has also shown how important a decent night’s sleep is for our physical health. Neuroscience and modern brain scanning has shown that sleep has it’s own rhythm, part of the circadian-body clock cycle. And

HOT FEET The hot, sunny weather is fabulous, says Jackie Thomas of Abbey Road Podiatry, but is it too hot for your feet? We’ve been having a fabulous summer, hot and sunny, but maybe you find it too hot for when the sleep is in healthy rhythm, we wake up physically and emotionally recuperated. Sleep can be disrupted by many things, including heightened stress levels, alcohol, medication and physical illnesses (not to mention heat!) It’s a common part of my job as a solution focused hypnotherapist to help clients normalise their sleeping patterns. They may have been

your feet. Perhaps you must wear safety boots or closed-in shoes for work. This can cause your feet to overheat and get smelly. This is because they become a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. There are ways you can combat it. One of which is to rotate your shoes every day, so you don’t wear the same pair two days running. This allows the shoes to dry out thoroughly and reduces the number of bacteria and fungi living in your shoes. Another way to cool down is to put your feet in to cool water,

but make sure you dry them properly in between the toes afterwards. Always cream your feet after washing to replace the natural oils which will have been removed. PS Don’t forget the sun screen on your feet, because they are not used to seeing the sun as much as other parts of your body. i Call 01752 426075 or visit abbeyroadpodiatry.com Jackie Thomas BSc (Hons) is a fully qualified HCPC registered podiatrist. SPORTS INJURY Claims as a result of sporting activities have their own unique problems due to the circumstances in which most sports accidents occur. The usual rules about negligence apply, but often have superimposed on them the additional rules and regulations of the individual sport. There are three main areas to consider: • PARTICIPANTS The usual rules relating to negligence, even criminal law, are in effect suspended during certain sporting activities. An obvious example is boxing. Both participants are considered to have volunteered to waive their rights (volenti non fit injuria) therefore the usual rules relating to assault are suspended. This suspension of the normal rules only applies while in the boxing ring. But this ’volunteering’ to give up one’s rights has limitations. To stay with the boxing analogy, a boxer only consents to being ‘assaulted’ if his opponent complies with the rules of the sport. The same applies to any sporting activity. Illegal challenges in football are quite high and regarded as an accepted hazard of the game, albeit outside the strict interpretation of the rules, so any such tackle would have to go beyond what could be considered in any way reasonable.

• MATCH OFFICIALS AND ORGANISERS This area of law is becoming increasingly contentious, particularly in the amateur game where often the only person with any indemnity insurance and, therefore, worth suing, is the match official. Liability can become an issue even before the players have left the changing room. Pitch inspections can be particularly controversial, especially when a sports ground is open to the public. Organisers can also be found liable if they fail to take into consideration for the safety of spectators. Motor sports and horse racing are obvious examples where allowing the public too close to the track can have severe consequences. • CHILDREN Particular care has to be taken with sporting activities involving children. A higher degree of responsibility will attach to organisers and supervisors than would be the case if adults were involved. This is particularly the case where there is an element of competition.

By David Richardson – founder of Richardsons Legal Services

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK Richardsons Legal Services, established in 2007 with its main office in Plymouth, which specialises in protecting the assets of the over 60s is pleased to announce the opening of two new branch offices in Exeter and Newton Abbot. RLS specialise in Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Home Protection Trusts. The need for a Will might seem obvious, but it is surprising how many people, especially younger people, don’t have one and do not realise that if they have a fatal accident without a Will being in place that nominates guardians, their children might end up in care. A Lasting Power of Attorney is also more important all the time as our lives and finances and risk of dementia grows. An LPA gives someone you trust (which can be up to four members of family or friends) the legal authority to deal with your finances and fight your battles for health and care if you are no longer able to do this

for yourself, even temporarily; for example you are in a coma in hospital or have developed dementia. A Home Protection Trust is particularly important for the over 60s who want to ensure that their beneficiaries do inherit after they have gone. An HPT protects against all unforeseen circumstances and makes things simpler for your children or others to benefit at a later date, and protects against claims by third parties, such as an ex-spouse who has not re-married, from making a claim on your estate under the 1975 Inheritance Act. Also, most importantly, property in Trust does not require probate after death, easing the strain on those left behind and removing probate costs, which can be very expensive. For further information contact Richardsons Legal Services on 0800 014 8031. RLS are fully regulated, insured and approved by Trading Standards.

The Courts have consistently maintained that, provided an organiser can demonstrate sufficient forward planning and a reasonable degree of supervision, then liability will not attach.

NEW LOCAL ICE CREAM BRAND IS STRAIGHT FROM MOO TO MOUTH A new brand of ice cream made at South Battisborough Farm on the Flete Estate looks set to make waves this summer. Surfing Cow has been created by dairy farmers Lawrence and Lee Glanville, who milk 400 cows on their farm hugging the South Devon coastline between Bigbury and Noss Mayo. Surfing Cow ice cream comes in a delicious range of flavours produced from the milk of the freerange Jersey-crosses that graze the farm’s lush pasture yielding a rich, creamy milk that gives the ice cream its unique flavour. Lawrence said: “It’s high-quality artisan ice cream made in a con-

26_TIM_Aug18.indd 26

verted barn just a stone’s throw from the milking parlour. “After months of tasting we’ve created our core flavours that include Devon Dairy, a traditional, natural farm ice cream with no added flavouring, Surfers Strawberry, Salted Caramel, Mint Choc Chip, and Pure Devon Honeycomb. “We’ve had a terrific start as it’s certainly been ice cream eating weather and our stand has already been very popular at the local events we have attended.” But there’s more to the brand than just ice cream, with the couple wanting children to understand the provenance of the ice cream they are eating.

Lawrence explained: “We felt it was a great way for children to see where their milk comes from and to learn how it is made into ice cream.” Milk is transferred daily to the ice cream parlour and windows into the kitchen mean visitors can see the ice cream being made. The cows, part of a closed herd, are farmed using a New Zealand

system, which means they live outside all year round, unless the weather is particularly bad or they are due to calve. Such high welfare standards help ensure South Battisborough Farm is home to a happy herd which science has proven produce more nutritious milk – and great tasting Surfing Cow ice cream. i www.surfingcowdevon.co.uk

â– Ivybridge Probus Club ANYONE FOR CROQUET? At the end of June, Mike Holman organised a wonderful club outing for an afternoon of croquet at the Avon Vale Tennis and Croquet Club, followed by a splendid afternoon tea in the pavilion. The party, 16 players and a

number of spectators, was made up of a few regular players and a handful of willing learners. After brief tuition/refresher, the players split into two games for pairs, under the leadership of Mike and George Seagar-Berry, a senior member of the club. This turned out to be one of the best afternoon activities the club

INSPIRATION Kathryn Delve from the Academy of Floral Art’s title ‘A Walk in the Woods’ was an excellent description for her floral arrangements at Ivybridge Flower Club’s July meeting. She incorporated logs, twigs, willow, ferns, moss and bark as the bases for her seven displays, all sourced from her own walks. Her use of vibrant reds, yellows and oranges created a ‘tropical forest’ theme with the flowers displayed on a driftwood tree. Further horizontal and vertical innovative designs used sunflowers, orchids, gerberas and delphiniums complimented by a more delicate use of wild flowers in test tubes attached to fine twigs. The club doesn’t meet in August, so the next meeting will be on Monday, 10th September, when members will welcome Tina Parkes, also from the Academy of Floral Art. Her title is ‘Inspiration of the Season’. All welcome to attend – £6 for non members. i Contact Hilary on 01752 892647 for more information about the club

CHRISTIE AT HER BEST This autumn’s production will see a first for Ivybridge Theatre Company at it participates in the Agatha Christie birthday week anniversary celebrations for the first time. The company will be staging The Unexpected Guest at The Watermark from 20th-22nd September. This is Christie at her best, leaving lots of clues as to who committed the murder but, as the play progresses, twists and turns in the plot, laying the blame at the feet of many, leave you more and more unsure as to the culprit. As with all plays of her period, costumes and set are vital in setting the correct feel for the period. For The Unexpected Guest there is not only the set to be created but also the additional challenge of creating the eerie atmosphere; the fog swirling round the isolated house, the darkness and the distant call of the foghorn calling to those on the waters. This is a dark mystery indeed and for Christie devotees it will be a night of suspense and disbelief; ITC urge you to put this date in your diaries now, for surely this is an experience you will not want to miss. Tickets are on sale at The Watermark price £8. If you have any interest in performing arts or even helping back-stage (for example costumes, set making, lighting, sound) Ivybridge Theatre Company would love to hear from you. The club meet every Wednesday evening at 7.30pm in Chapel Place, Ivybridge. i Contact Ron Davis on 01752 893308 or visit ivybridgetheatre company.co.uk

If you have an idea for a project that would benefit or enhance the local community you may be able to access funding from the new Communities Together Fund. The fund (formerly Town and Parish/TAP Fund) is allocated according to the number of electors on the electoral roll, with the district council contributing 10p per elector to the fund, and Devon County Council contributing £1 per elector. It is managed in the South Hams by South Hams District Council. The fund is intended to support new ideas and to help communities work together on projects that enhance and make a difference to residents. Previously, the money has been awarded to support a range of valuable projects over the last few years, including the provision of life-saving defibrillators, and various public space improvements. i For more information about The

The victorous Year 9 netball squad

In May, Years 7, 8 and 9 netball academy students travelled to Torquay to compete in the PGL Netball Tournament weekend. Shannon Ormrod, Year 9 Netball Team, reports. Of the three teams competing, the Year 7 team came fifth in their category, missing out on the semi-final by just a single goal. This was a really good achievement for the girls as this was their first very

competitive tournament as a team. The Year 8 girls played really well, coming third, again missing out on the final by just a few goals. Congratulations to the Year 9 team, who won their section. This was a really good achievement for us and the team all worked very hard for it. We were undefeated throughout the competition, too, which was another amazing accomplishment.

Students from Ivybridge Community College have helped redesign Harry’s Patch (above right) to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War. Dermot Roberts, chairman of the RBL Ivybridge branch, contacted the college to see how the students might be able to help in the redesign of the memorial garden. This was set as a design challenge within the Design and Technology Department and the

students came up with a range of designs which were submitted to the RBL trustees. Initially, there was to be one overall winner, however the designs were so good that it was decided to utilise different design concepts from five different students. Each student’s idea contributed to a different aspect of the garden, which was then created, following the designs, by members of the RBL and volunteers.

RELAYS BREAK RECORDS The popular Erme Valley Relays produced a record-breaking 145 entries and a record-breaking lap time for a man. The relays consist of four legs over a 2.5 mile course starting and finishing at Ivybridge Rugby Club. A team from the Tavistock Run Project denied Exmouth Harriers a hat-trick of titles on a hot evening. Their winning time was 51 minutes and 33 seconds. Tom Merson of Exmouth ran the record-breaking time of 12.09 for a man and the Harriers ladies team of Emma Lake, Rebecca Lee, Cleo Perry and Alison McEwing won back the ladies title which they last claimed in 2016. The Harriers had a good entry at the tough Burrator Horseshoe, which starts at Meavy and takes in the area of Sheepstor, with some very steep climbs! Craig MacAlpine was the first Harrier home in 30th place in a time of 51.56 and was followed by Dave

Dave Engledew was 147th in 1.34.57, whilst wife Alison was 522nd in 1.54.17 and 3rd female vet 55. Rose Bralsford was 573rd in 1.56.10. The Harriers did well at the Muskies Madness evening race, with Cleo Perry (47.14) 1st lady and Emma Lake (48.43) 2nd lady. Sarah Hirons (50.57) and Suzie Spooner (52.46) were not far

Craig MacLellan made the long trip to Lundy Island and completed the 14.2 ‘off-road’ race in a time of 2.33.50. Richard Lander Stow continued

his good form at the Two Tunnels Half Marathon in Bath. He had a great run to finish 9th overall out of 392 finishers. Lander Stow was 1st in the 40-49 age category and also achieved a personal best time of 1.29.28 on what was yet another very hot day! i For more information about the Harriers visit ermevalleyharriers.co.uk
