the discussion to the wider community and is seeking their views. Chairman of the working group, Cllr John Tucker, said; “While we recognise that there is merit in aligning the physical boundary with the electoral boundaries, the residents affected would then be paying a different rate of council tax because Ivybridge’s precept is higher than Ugborough’s.

“Another question that we have been asking ourselves is whether the characteristics of the area concerned are more akin to the village setting than the town.” During the initial stage of the review, only four comments were received from consultees contacted by the working group. The working group is strongly encouraging local residents and stakeholders to express their views

during this next stage of the review, as this will be the final opportunity to make comments before the council has to reach a decision in the autumn. For further information, including how to have your say, visit www.southhams.gov.uk/article/ 11707/Ivybridge-and-UgboroughCommunity-Governance-Review The final consultation phase is open until 9th September.

MAP COURTESY OF SOUTH HAMS DISTRICT COUNCIL

Residents of Ivybridge and Ugborough are being encouraged to have their say on proposals to transfer an area of land east of Ivybridge from the parish of Ugborough to the town of Ivybridge. It has been suggested that by transferring this piece of land into the town of Ivybridge, the parish boundaries would more accurately reflect the ward boundaries for both South Hams District and Devon County councils. A consultation is now open and residents are being urged to submit their comments to South Hams District Council. Since November 2015, a working group of South Hams District councillors has been looking at the parish boundaries between Ivybridge and Ugborough. Until now, the group had been seeking the initial views of the residents directly affected by any change, the county council and the afV fected parish and town councils. Now, the group has opened up

Development plan for Ivybridge up to 2034

“Comments must be submitted by 5pm on 12th August to South Hams District Council. Existing and potential development sites in Ivybridge

Proposals identifying areas of Ivybridge suitable for development for the period up to 2034 have been published by South Hams District Council. In the Plymouth and South West Devon Joint Local Plan, produced in conjunction with West Devon and Plymouth City councils, SHDC has identified areas on both sides of the town which could be developed for housing and employment. The proposals are now open for consultation and Ivybridge Town Council is urging local people to have their say on the plan. While it is reasonable to expect towns rather than villages to have more housing, employment and facilities, it is vital that the development is located around the town where the infrastructure can cope. The Ivybridge Neighbourhood Plan, being produced by the town council, has identified key concerns about highways, in particular Western Road air quality, so any further expansion to the east of the town should not be supported until a plan for the

highways can be provided. Increasing development on the western side, which has very limited public transport and major water run-off/flooding issues which have not been resolved, as well as increasing traffic onto the one A38 roundabout at the entrance to Ivybridge, highlights the problems of expanding there. Ivybridge Town Council, working with Ugborough Parish, is going to explore development options to the south of the town, near the new recycling centre, rather than increasing the pressure and stretching out the town to the east and west. Infill sites, like those at Dame Hannahs School and Cornwood Road, also need to be reviewed as these could contribute to pressures on the highways and parking in the west of the town. The plan and information can be viewed in the library at The Watermark or online at southhams.gov.uk/jointlocalplan Comments must be submitted by 5pm on 12th August to South Hams District Council.

NEWS Editor’s message by Steven Vincent

WE ARE EXPANDING

An Ivybridge pre-school has joined up with the primary school on whose grounds it is located. Manor Pre-School is now under the governance of Manor Primary School, which was recently rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted. The school and pre-school staff have been working closely together to enhance all aspects of the setting, including improvements to the environment and facilities, as well as ensuring that teaching and learning are of the highest quality. The school’s Early Years teacher, Mrs Strawford, has been instrumental in these developments, leading the team and teaching. Manor Primary’s headteacher,

Karen Dixon, is thrilled with the development. “This is a wonderful opportunity for us to work together,” she said. “We are now able to share our expertise and provide the very best opportunities for all local children aged 2-11. “Having these younger children as

an integral part of our school is a privilege and a pleasure – we are very excited about the future ahead.” Any parents who are interested in looking around the pre-school or booking for the autumn term should contact the school on 01752 893182 from 1st September.

NEW OPERATOR CHOSEN FOR LEISURE CENTRE A new leisure provider will take over the management of Ivybridge leisure centre in December, subject to council approval. Fusion Lifestyle have been selected as the preferred leisure operator by South Hams District and West Devon Borough councils following a competitive tendering process. Fusion Lifestyle is a registered charity, which means that all of the money that they receive is used to enhance and develop services and facilities.

Peter Kay, Fusion Lifestyle’s chief executive officer, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been selected. “Fusion is committed to the principle of delivering high quality services and facilities which are inclusive and accessible to all members of the local communities. “We will work closely with existing customers and new users to deliver facility developments and service improvements.” Subject to approval by both coun-

TOWN COUNCIL FUNDS YOUTH WORKER AT LEISURE NIGHTS Ivybridge Town Council has been able to obtain funding for a youth worker to attend the Friday Youth Leisure Nights at the Ivybridge Leisure Centre. This is in addition to the regular Thursday and Friday afternoon sessions at The Watermark, where young people can drop in and see a youth worker about anything which is troubling them and get some immediate answers or advise. Youth Leisure Nights recommence on Friday evenings in September following a break in August.

cils, Fusion Lifestyle’s operation of local leisure facilities will start on 1st December 2016. The contract will run for 25 years and one of the hopes for the new contract is that it will draw in significant investment and development of the leisure centres. Cllr Hilary Bastone, SHDC’s portfolio holder for customer first said: “We saw some fantastic operators who were very experienced, but ultimately we were all agreed that Fusion would offer our leisure users an excellent service.”

REPAIR REVOLUTION NEEDS YOU! The repair revolution, known as Restart, is coming to Ivybridge in September and it needs your help. Restart parties involve local volunteers with technical repair skills helping others to fix and maintain their small electrical appliances – for free. The event will be held in Ivybridge Methodist Church on Saturday, 10th September, from 10am1pm and organisers are looking for a small group of menders to help on the day. If you think you might have the right skills for this event, contact Emma Croft, Re-use project co-ordinator, on 07966 566435 or emma.croft@devon.gov.uk

I am delighted that, starting with this issue, The Ivybridge magazine will become the only local magazine available in Tesco Lee Mill Extra. The store attracts almost 40,000 people every week to the outskirts of Ivybridge; it is under two and half miles from the town centre and the great local businesses we have. Out-of-town shops and their impact on nearby towns is contentious but... To have this number of people close to our town and not attempt to entice them here is, I think, a missed opportunity. So, The Ivybridge magazine will be doing its bit by showcasing all that is good – community and business – about Ivybridge to store visitors. Initially, 2,000 copies a month will be available from our dedicated, branded stand, which is in addition to the 7,000 currently distributed, taking our total circulation to 9,000 copies. So, hello Tesco, I look forward to sharing our town with you.

RECOUNTING LIFE IN THE TOWN O OO REMEMBERING THE FALLEN

T

he Battle of the Somme raged through July, August and on into the autumn of 1916; it dominates this month’s piece and September’s too. As the casualties mounted, people at home began to receive news of loved ones killed, missing or injured. News of extreme gallantry also reached south Devon. In late July, Private Theodore Veale from Dartmouth, who was serving with the 8th Devons, risked his own life on a number of occasions as he went out into ‘No Man’s Land’ trying to rescue one of his officers, Lieutenant Eric Savill. Eventually, Veale was successful in bringing the badly wounded officer safely back (a full account of this appears in my book South Devon in the Great War). For these actions Veale was promoted to corporal and awarded the Victoria Cross; one of only two VCs awarded to the Devonshire Regiment during the whole war. No doubt news of his gallantry helped to

NEWS SINGERS WANTED Three years ago, Martin Sibley wrote a monologue with songs called Little Blue Dress, which along with an actor and singers, was performed at a successful evening at Lukesland House. Martin would like to put the show on again, and is looking for two singers, one male and one female, aged from early 20s to early 30s. You must be able to sing across a range of styles (eg 1930s musical, blues, pop, soul etc). It will be an amateur production which Martin hopes to be putting on in the autumn. cheer people when it reached home. There is more to this story than first appears, however. Last month, I wrote about Lieutenant Savill’s quick thinking and initiative which saved the lives of many C Company soldiers on the first day of the battle. Was Veale from C Company and, if so, does this help explain his immediate willingness to try to rescue Savill? I would like to think so, but so far no evidence has been found to support this idea. After the war, Theodore Veale became a fireman in Dartmouth – local people say he was always first up the ladder! Eric Savill graduated from Cambridge University, became a surveyor and eventually took the post of Deputy Ranger of the parks at Royal Windsor. He was knighted in 1955. Both men died in 1980 and the Veale-Savill garden in Dartmouth was opened in 2002. Next month, I shall write about some of the Ivybridge soldiers and their role in this battle.

ROADSHOW EVENT IS ALL ABOUT THE DOGS An educational roadshow to help inform both dog and non-dog owners about some of the dog-related issues faced by the district council is coming to Ivybridge. South Hams District Council has teamed up with Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, for a series of educational roadshows, following up their campaign to overcome dog-related issues within the district. The roadshow will be at Ivybridge Market on Thursday, 25th August, and everyone is welcome to the

visit the stands, which will be manned by locality engagement officers from SHDC, together with a member from the Dogs Trust. At the stand you can find out how to be ‘Dog Smart’ and how to be a responsible dog owner. “The council is determined to address the dog-related issues in the district and we encourage you to come along to the roadshow to find out more about dogs,” said SHDCs portfolio holder for commercial services, Cllr Rufus Gilbert.

Get set for the Ivybridge Summer Fete The first-ever Ivybridge Summer Fete is being held this September. Miss Ivy Events and the Ivybridge Chamber of Commerce are organising the fete, which will take place on Sunday, 4th September, 10.30am-4.30pm. There will be an array of amazing artisan and gift stalls, fabulous ‘make-do-and-mend’ workshops and a vehicle display. Musical entertainment will be provided by the wonderful Becky Brine, alongside plenty to keep the children amused, such as face

painting, magic shows and balloon modelling. Ivybridge’s local theatre group will be in costume to promote their next production, and some vibrant dancers will be sure to get you in the groove. Delicious refreshments, served by local businesses, will be available throughout the day, and Ivybridge’s great shops will be open and supporting the event. It’s set to be a great day to soak up the atmosphere and support the thriving local community. î www.missivyevents.co.uk

Dogs Trust education and community officer Gemma Lewry said: “Dogs Trust is the UK’s largest dog welfare charity with expert knowledge in dog behaviour. Our hope is that simple advice such as never leave your child alone with any dog, never tease a dog, don’t approach a dog you don’t know and always ask the owner before you approach a dog could prevent more dog attacks. “We all remember the Green Cross Code and we want Be Dog Smart to be just as well known.”

SCHOOLS Year 6 children at Stowford School brought Broadway to Ivybridge with an amazing production of Annie. It was a real challenge to re-create this hugely popular show, but the production, packed with musical numbers, great costumes and stunning dance routines, wowed the audiences. Year 6 teacher, Matt Jackson, said: “Stowford has a reputation for ambitious and spectacular productions. This year, as always, the children rose to the challenge and produced a performance that they can be really proud of. The standard of singing was fantastic, with some superb solos and the dance routines were dazzling.”

Finn, Harvey Luke and Leah INSET: Lucy, Ben, Rosanna, Daniel and Harrison

A large crowd of parents and grandparents cheered on the children at this year’s Woodlands Park Primary School sports day. All the children participated in a carousel of activities and one race. The Foundation and Key Stage 1 winning team was Orange Sun, with Purple Butterflies coming out on top in Key Stage 2.

Meadowsfoot class at Erme Primary School were lucky enough to have a visit from the Really Wild Experience. Neil was the expert who came to talk to the children, and he brought his animal friends along too! The children found out about lots of different minibeasts and their habitats, and they even had the chance to hold some of the creatures. The event was a fabulous introduction to their new topic. The visit would not have been possible without the support of Kays Transport, so the children and adults of Meadowsfoot class would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ for their very generous sponsorship of the event.

SCHOOLS Athletes from Manor School again picked up a number of medals at the year’s main schools’ athletics competition held at Brickfields in Plymouth. The Manor team battled to a very credible third place overall, with the teamwork of all children standing out as always. Huge congratulations to all competitors who made the entire day a massive success! The school is so proud of all of your efforts! TRIATHLON AT MANOR

Children in years one and two at Manor Primary took part in a triathlon which involved swimming, cycling and running for 10 minutes each. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves, but were absolutely exhausted.

The Thrive room at the Erme Primary School has been awrded top marks following a re-vamp. An artist from the University of St Mark and St Johns helped to improve the room, which, with its woodland setting and many woodland animals and features, is used as an enhancing and calm environment for pupils. The school would like to thank all of the staff and parents that helped, whether by donating supplies, lending a hand or even just giving an idea. A huge thank you to Mr Adams of Ivybridge Building and Landscaping who donated the paint.

Entrepreneurs of the future; the children in year 6 at Manor spent a week busily making/sourcing and then selling a range of goods to go towards their end of year trip to Woodlands. Alongside making over £700, which was a fantastic achievement, the children learnt some valuable new skills, including how to budget, understanding profit & loss and the importance of team work and collaboration. Who knows, could one of the children from Manor be the next Alan Sugar?

The crowd was delighted as the Manor Primary School choir took to the stage to perform a three-part gospel medley and a stirring ballad. The children also had time to enjoy music performed by Woodlands Park pupils, students from Ivybridge CC and other local artists.

Tesco Lee Mill Extra gets involved in many projects within the community, but we realised that we have never asked our customers who live in the community what matters to them and what they would like us to support, writes Kirsty Cunningham, customer experience manager at Tesco Lee Mill Extra. So, in June, we started a customer community project to give our customers the chance to put forward local projects or organisations they think we should support. Over a four week period, customers can nominate the project or organisation that they would like us to help (by fundraising or arranging volunteer support, for example). We then count up the nominations to see which three have received the most mentions, and during the following week we open a voting system where customers are given a token at the end of their shop and on the way out they choose which organisation they would like to win. Once we have the winner we then do a week of fundraising at the front of the store, with all proceeds being presented to the organisation on behalf of our customers. In June, our customers voted for Woodside Animal Sanctuary and we raised £343, plus the store donated 100kg of cat litter, trays and buckets. Customers are currently voting between St Luke’s Hospice and the Ivybridge Gymnastics Club for who we should support next.

Other community activity at Lee Mill Extra Bags of Help Scheme In May, Manor Primary School received £10,000 from this nationwide scheme, which distributes the money raised by the 5p charge on carrier bags. In total, we donated £30,000 to three local organisations.

We donated water for the Ivybridge 10k and also helped on the day. We helped raise £600 for the Ivybridge Memory Cafe by running a fruit stall at WoodFest at Woodlands Park Primary School. We donated bread rolls to both the Donkey Sanctuary for their fete and the Scouts for their hog roast at the Lions Club Funday. We have provided fruit for fruit kebabs for the Ivybridge football tournament. We also continue to collect for the Ivybridge Foodbank,

well SUMMER FITNESS DO’S AND DON’TS FOR WORKING OUT IN THE SUN BY CLAIRE MORGAN-HUGHES Devon Fit Camp

Summertime has arrived and with it the sunshine has inspired many to tone up, lose weight and get in shape. I have 10 do’s and don’ts to maximise your performance so you can enjoy working out in the heat without wilting away under the summer sun. Summer is my favourite season because it really opens up a whole load of potential activities to mix up your workouts; you can go for bike rides, long walks, games in the park, outdoor jogging or running, swimming in the sea on holidays. The motivation to get out and do something is far greater than when it’s cold, miserable and dark outside. But there are potential pitfalls you can fall into, so here’s my guide on how to prepare yourself and get the best out of your summer workouts.

The Ivybridge magazine

1. Do drink lots of fluid Hot weather and sunshine causes the body to sweat more and this will increase during even mild exercise like walking, so make sure you replace the fluids you are losing or you will run the risk of dehydration. Try to drink a pint of water about an hour before working out and also rehydrate after your workout.

2. Don’t eat protein before working out Eating protein can increase your core temperature, which when working out in warm temperatures could cause heat shock. You are much better off reloading on protein after your workout.

3. Do lower your core temp before working out Drinking ice based drinks about an hour before exercise, or having an ice cold bath or shower, can lower your core temperature which will help you maximise your performance and delay the

effects of the warm weather on your body.

8. Don’t drink caffeine based drinks/supplements

4. Don’t work out between 12noon and 4pm

9. Do listen to your body

The midday sun is obviously when temperatures and UV exposure are at their highest points, so try to avoid this time of the day to work out.

5. Do get outside The sunshine won’t last forever so make the most of it while you can because before you know it it’ll be dark and cold again.

6. Don’t forget sunscreen Protecting yourself against sunburn, sun stroke and harmful UV rays is really important and people often neglect the most basic protection, which is sunscreen. Even when it’s cloudy overhead UV rays can still be damaging to your health so don’t underestimate the power of the sun.

7. Don’t wear dark colours

10. Do eat ice cream Have a treat every once in a while, just not every meal! We’ve been having some amazing results again this month – if you’d like to find out more about how you can get into great shape while eating delicious meals, never being hungry and losing those holiday pounds, simply book a call with us at Devon Fit Camp. Our sessions are fun, suitable for all levels of fitness and will get you results – FAST! We run nine sessions a week and, along with full support, coaching and nutrition plans, we can help you get into great shape and reaching for the clothes you want to wear. Whatever type of wedding you are planning, spare a thought for your feet. They will, after all, carry you through the day, into the night and on to the honeymoon. With all the excitement of arranging and planning for your special day, foot care is very often overlooked, and on many occasions I have had a bride book an appointment at the last minute to “try and sort out her feet”. Below is a suggested regime to ensure that your feet feel fabulous in time for your big day.

Three months to go Make an appointment with the foot clinic for a general check-up and for helpful advice on any specific areas you should be focusing your attention on. Begin an at-home maintenance regime, such as using a foot file or scrubs to stop rough, hard

Whatever type of wedding you are planning, spare a thought for your feet. skin from building up. Start to moisturise your feet every day. I would suggest that you do this overnight. Apply moisturiser and wear socks. In the morning your feet will be baby soft!

One month to go If you have not started a foot care plan yet now is the time to start! Perhaps book yourself a foot massage to help de-stress as the day approaches. You can also massage your own feet. Use a light oil to help keep the skin supple. Massage also encourages circulation, which will help to stimulate skin and nail growth.

Why not book a pampering treatment, such as a foot massage or reflexology? Stress levels will be getting higher as the big day gets nearer, so make sure you take time out to relax. Congratulations on your big day, and I wish you and your new partner a long, happy and prosperous married life. “Rewiring” the brain to reduce suffering from pain BY TIFFANY ARMITAGE Tiffany Armitage Hypnotherapy

Between one third and half of all people in the UK suffer from persistent “chronic” pain according to a new study published in the British Medical Journal. For many of those suffering, medication and surgery can only provide limited relief to their pain. It is also well documented that an increase in stress can result in an increase in pain levels. For example, a recent study published in Psychological Science reported people feeling almost double the amount of physical pain after recalling a financially unstable time in their lives. We are beginning to understand this response using modern brain imaging methods. Pain involves various regions of the brain (different regions depending on the S types of pain) and persistent pain

is most noticeable in the emotion and selfreflection areas of the brain. Research has shown that hypnosis is one of the most promising things we can offer to retrain the brain’s response

to pain. The hypnotic state is different from that experienced in either the conscious or unconscious states. It allows the person to re-assess the need of the current pain pathways, often enabling the person to reduce the pain levels, or increase their acceptance of the pain. Furthermore, we can also understand this because hypnotherapy helps enormously with reducing anxiety and stress. Coping better with issues in life, improving sleep, and increasing the ability to relax will all contribute to bringing the pain to a manageable level. I am one of the leading Solution Focused Hypnotherapists in the South West, and work from my own practice in Ivybridge. If you would like to book an initial consultation, please contact me.

Council Tax reduction scheme changes proposed Ivybridge residents have the chance to give their views on proposed changes to South Hams District Council’s Council Tax (CT) Reduction Scheme. Residents who think they might be effected by the proposed changes and urged to visit the council’s website and tell them what they think. SHDC has decided to amend its scheme due to central government changes to Housing Benefit and the introduction of Universal Credit. Proposed changes include: To remove the family premium for new claims made after 1st April 2017 or where this premium would apply for the first time to existing claims. To remove the element of a work related activity component for new Employment and Support Allowance (ESA). This will only apply to new applicants for ESA after 1st April 2017. To reduce the period for which a person absent from Great Britain and still receive a CT Reduction from 13 to 4 weeks. To limit the number of dependent children that can be added within the calculation for the Council Tax Scheme to a maximum of two. This will only affect households who have a third or subsequent child born on or after 1st April 2017. To remove the additional earnings disregard (amounts that we deduct from claimants earned income prior to assessing their claim) and apply the standard disregards to all applicants that are in work regardless of hours. To remove entitlement to the Severe Disability premium where another person is paid UC (carers element) to look after them. Introduce a Minimum Income Floor (MIF) for the selfemployed after a 12 month start-up period. Linked to National Living wage (£7.20) or National Minimum wage (£6.70 or £5.30 depending on age). The consultation is open until 4th September. For more information and to have your say, go to www.southhams. gov.uk/ctrconsultation

Other arrangements included a horizontal design of a sunset in shades of peach and apricot and a line arrangement using alliums – found growing on the cliffs above Bude. Members were asked to help man an information stall at The Watermark Open Morning on 13th August (see page 23), when it is hoped that the publicity will encourage members of the public to “try a club meeting – free of charge”. The club takes a break in August, so the next meeting is on 12th September at The Watermark, at 7.30pm. “Floral Yarns” is the title for area demonstrator Alison Penno. Visitors are welcome, £6. DAY AT THE RACES A party of 15 from Ivybridge Probus Club enjoyed a day at the races at the beginning of July. Newton Abbott racecourse was bathed in sunshine for large parts of the day; sadly, the sun was also shining on the bookies! This annual event, which is organised by past president Mike Fletcher, is always a hugely enjoyable outing with the racing preceded by an excellent lunch. At the Club’s usual monthly lunch, members enjoyed a talk from Pam Goodall entitled ‘My Life Prior to Spiritual Awakening’. An unusual departure from the club’s normal speakers’ subjects, it was an autobiographical talk during which Pam talked about a wide range of ‘out-of-world’ experiences which had happened to her throughout her eventful, and sometimes tragic, life. When she had finished, Pam she fielded a multitude of questions. One of the club’s golf days was rescheduled for the 22nd, when the club’s golfers and following walkers assembled again at Wrangaton for a keen but friendly contest on this unique course.

Caring families wanted A local adoption charity is looking for families for a new adoption service, Fostering to Adopt. Fostering to Adopt places a child, usually a baby, with approved adopters, subject to the match between the adopters and child being approved, on a fostering placement. Then, if the court agrees that the child should be adopted, the placement becomes an adoption placement. Multiple moves for children in care is proven to have long term

negative impacts on their development, so the earlier a child can settle with permanent parents, the better the outcomes. Families for Children, based in Buckfast, place children from across the UK with adopters in the south west. They free, impartial advice so that you can make a positive decision. Money matters

NEW ONLINE BENEFIT CLAIMS

Acquiring finance for your business Simon Jilks looks at your options for securing the finance you need to get a new venture going Following on from my article in the July issue (The things you need to consider if you’re starting your own business), I thought I would elaborate further on the options for getting the finance you need to get your new venture going. There are several different types of finance available depending on how much you need, and your personal situation. Starting with the most common, your local bank. Depending on how much you want to borrow, your bank will probably require

some sort of security, so if you are a homeowner then this may be the route for you. They will also want to see that you are willing to invest some of your own money as this shows you are committed to your idea. If your credit rating isn’t strong, or you don’t have any assets to use as security, then there are some other options, Outset Finance is a governmentbacked organisation who have funds to lend to small start-up businesses needing up to £25,000. You will need to supply a business plan and forecast. Interest rates may be higher than some banks, but they are flexible in their approach and do their best to help. Their number is 0800 3898 188.

Several organisations, such as Ignition or ASC finance, offer asset financing, which is used to buy specific assets, such as machinery. The asset financed is the security so usually there is no need for further guarantees. This type of finance can only be used to buy specific assets, not general working capital. We shouldn’t over look grants, as there is sometimes money available from the government for specific types of businesses, eg research and development. The website gaininbusiness.com is a good place to start to see what is available. I have had experience with all of the above, so if you’re looking to get yourself started please give me a call for some free advice.

Entry to The Watermark 2016 Amateur Photographic Competition closed on the 31st July and the panel of three local judges is now looking forward to casting their eyes over the beautiful photographs of Ivybridge which have been flooding in since early this year. The judges will choose their favourite 24 photos; six from each of the four seasons. They will be judging each photo on the criteria of originality, public appeal, suitability for inclusion in a calendar/postcard and recognisable local landmarks. The final 12 winning photos to be used in The Watermark 2017 Ivybridge Calendar will be decided by public vote. We hope that everyone will get involved in voting, either via The Watermark website www.ivybridgewatermark.co.uk or in person in The Watermark, where the shortlisted 24 photos will be displayed in the Coffee Shop. each person can vote for one photo from each season (four in total) between 15th August-15th September 2016. What would happen if you suffered a severe stroke or got dementia? By Katherine Millman, Partner at Howard & Over Solicitors

People often don’t tend to realise the importance of Lasting Powers of Attorney until they see a loved one losing the ability to understand information and to make decisions for themselves. Lasting Powers of Attorney are documents that allow a person, chosen by you, to make decisions on your behalf when you are unable to do so yourself. In other words, your chosen ‘attorneys’ can assist you in handling your paperwork and decision making when you may be unable to deal with it. This can be either decisions relating to your property and financial affairs, enabling them, for example, to pay bills and collect your pension on your behalf or alternatively, to

make decisions on your health and welfare such as what care home is most suitable for you. If you do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place and you lose your mental capacity, someone will need to make an application to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship Order. This is likely to be very costly and can take many months. In the meantime, nothing can be done in relation to your finances. I always recommend that my clients consider making a Lasting Power of Attorney. The document may never need to be used however, if anything should happen to them, they have the peace of mind of knowing that they have chosen someone they trust to assist them without any delay or expense. If you would like to find out more about Lasting Powers of Attorney, please contact Katherine Millman (a partner/solicitor specialising in Wills, Probate and Powers of Attorney) at Howard & Over Solicitors.

RANGERS The strimming season has started... Work to clear the hundreds of miles of paths that criss-cross Dartmoor is well underway, as Andrea Roberts reports With the bird nesting season now finished, it is safe for us to start clearing as many of the footpaths and bridlepaths on the moor as we can. With over 500 miles of paths criss-crossing the moor, this is no small task. We are helped with this mammoth job by volunteers, charity groups, our own volunteer wardens and individual volunteers from different communities across the moor. We also employ contractors to help with the longer and more difficult paths. Our legal remit, on behalf on Devon County Council, is to make sure that all surface vegetation is cleared. All overhanging and side vegetation is the legal responsibility of the landowner to clear, although we do on occasion help to clear these too. Each ranger across the moor will have a vegetation clearance list and, at the beginning of the new financial year each April, will look through the list and start organising any groups or contractors and raise purchase orders to start the work from August onwards. The paths are normally prioritised depending on how close to a village or town they are and how frequently they are used by the public. A variety of tools and equipment are used, including large petrol driven strimmers, hedge cutters, chainsaws, loppers, secateurs and, on occasion, our own reciprocating mower and tractor and flail.

Rumble in the jungle Ivybridge and Cornwood Rainbows enjoyed a jungle themed sleepover at South Brent Primary School’s The Den. The Rainbows, aged between 5 and 7, enjoyed a packed programme of activities, which included making animal masks, decorating elephant biscuits, making African inspired musical instruments and painting African scenes. They also made night-

lights, sang animal themed songs and had fun playing lots of games. Rainbows leader Amy Morris commented: “The girls all had a great time taking part in the different activities. One of them even asked if she could stay for another night!”

î For more information on Rainbows or to register visit www.girlguiding.org.uk

This job will normally take anything up to three months to complete, with some paths requiring more than one cut. This all happens alongside our other duties, including patrolling at weekends, attending local shows and events, leading guided walks and hosting archaeological volunteer days, to name but a few. Also, with the school holidays, the amount of visitors to Dartmoor increases significantly, which in turn increases the amount of time we Ranger Ella Briens clearing a path spend on picking up litter, clearing away abandoned tents and barbecues and educating and advising the public about our byelaws (such as off-road driving, sheep worrying by dogs and camping inappropriately). The summer is, therefore, a very busy time for us, so if you do happen to come across Ella or myself – or any other ranger – stop and have a quick chat as we could probably do with a five minute break!

If you are interested in finding out more about the Ranger service first hand, or think you may need their help please, contact them on: Ella – 07711104546 / ebriens@dartmoor.gov.uk Andrea – 07720509270 / aroberts@dartmoor.gov.uk

Children from the school were joined by pupils from Manor School and local groups, including the UK Meltones and Blue Jewel Celidh band for the event, which raised money for Ivybridge Memory Cafe and the Woodlands Park Friends Association. The groups and bands performed on outdoor stages as the audience relaxed on hay bales and picnic blankets on the school field. Woodlands Park Primary School pupils have been working along-

side members of the Ivybridge Memory Café in fortnightly music workshops held in school, and their performance on the day was a highlight for event organiser and music specialist teacher Debbie Down. “I was incredibly proud of all of the performances at WoodFest, but especially the memory cafe performance as they have only been coming into school since Easter and the difference between then and now is incredible. “Seeing adults and children performing alongside each other and valuing each other’s role is really special.”

made the long trip to the Swansea Half Marathon and both were rewarded with fine runs. Thorn was 92nd in 1.25.48, while Perry was 112th in 1.27.07. There was a great turnout of athletes at the popular ‘6 Moor Miles’ race. This is an ‘off-road’ event run in the Yelverton area. On a humid day, with the ground heavy under foot, Lee Eastley was the first Harrier home in 11th place, while Sarah Hirons was 1st fv35 and Jaine Swift 1st fv45. At the Run Exe Summer 5K Series, the Harriers were in sparkling form, with Michael Miners (18.16) the first Harrier

home. Alison McEwing (18.18) was 1st lady, Cleo Perry (18.51) 1st fv40, Sam Yearling (19.55) 1st U15 and Jaine Swift (20.07) 1st fv45. Erme Valley Harriers also did very well at the ‘Muddy Duck’, a six mile ‘off road’ event in Oreston. Sarah Hirons (fv35), Emma Lake (fv40), Jaine Swift (fv45) and Mike Hansen (mv55) all won their age categories. Mike Miners was 5th overall and 2nd senior man, whilst Russ Mogridge was 2nd mv50. Simon Swift was 3rd mv45 and Carol Hansen 2nd fv40. î ermevalleyharriers.co.uk

SHORT MAT BOWLERS LOOKING FORWARD TO THE START OF THE NEW SEASON Ivybridge Short Mat Bowls Club’s 2016/17 winter season opens in the second week of September. The club meets Mondays, Tuesdays and some Thursdays evenings at Ivybridge Community College. Short Mat Bowls is a shortened version of lawn bowls, played on mats using ‘woods’ as in traditional lawn bowls. This popular game can be played by all and provides an entertaining evening in a friendly, competitive environment. The club is part of the South Hams Short Mat Association and enters

two teams in leagues, which form part of the winter activities. The club also holds a charity tournament each spring to raise funds for local charities, ensuring there are plenty of opportunities for players to meet and play other local clubs. The club is holding an open evening on Monday, 26th September. If you feel like trying something different in the long winter evenings come along for a 7pm start. All you need is some flat shoes. For further information contact the secretary on 01752691306.
