NEWS Legion AGM The Royal British Legion Ivybridge Branch is holding its Annual General Meeting on Thursday, 24th November, at Ivybridge Rugby Club, starting at 7.30pm.

Guest speaker Tony Rea will address the meeting once the formal business has been conducted.

Fairtrade meeting WALK AND TALK YOUR WAY TO BETTER HEALTH AND WELLBEING Free, guided walks in and around Ivybridge offer an ideal way for people to benefit from the great health and wellbeing benefits of walking.

Health walks take place every Tuesday (level 2, 40-60 minutes) and Thursday (level 3, up to 90 minutes), with a level one walk (up to 30 minutes) on the first Tuesday of every month.

Meeting at Ivybridge Leisure

Centre at 9.45am for a 10am start, the walks, led by friendly, trained volunteers, finish up with refreshments in a local café. To take part, you do need to wear suitable footwear, and arrive early to complete a short health questionnaire before the walk starts.

Walk & Talk Ivybridge is part of Walking for Health, a national initiative promoted by The Ram-

blers and MacMillan, and hosted in the South Hams by South Hams CVS, for Active Devon.

NEWS BUTTERPARK DEVELOPMENT Butterpark closed as an elderly care home in 2014. Since then, Devon County Council has been endeavouring to find appropriate uses for the site. Ivybridge Town Council, with the support of the town’s county councillor, Roger Croad, has been working with representatives of people with learning difficulties, local councillors and support groups to see if some suitable, independent living accommodation can be provided for around six people, as part of a mixed-use site which would have some private market rented housing and Rent Plus.

The outline shown is a first draft of how the site could look and while some of the original Butterpark would be demolished, some of the building would be converted to provide the accommodation.

The town council has until the end of December 2016 to submit final proposals to Devon County Council. If anyone is interested in these proposals, especially peo-

ple with moderate learning disabilities who would like to live independently, then please contact the council to add support to its case for this mixed use site.

If this type of scheme can be delivered successfully, then the council would hope to try and replicate it in future as part of other developments planned for the town.

CAN YOU HELP CINDERELLA FIND HER GLASS SLIPPER? To celebrate its production of family-favourite pantomime Cinderella during next February’s half term holidays, Ivybridge Theatre Company is looking for a suitable local foot to grace a beautiful glass slipper.

A big part of Cinderella’s story is the intrigue over the Glass Slipper, and who it fits. The theatre company has teamed up with local businesses Connells and Footnote for a competition to find

the best fit for the beautiful piece of crystal footwear.

The businesses, who are sponsoring the show, will be hosting events where people can try on the glass slipper, and from those who it fits, one lucky winner will be drawn and win a special prize!

The first event will be in Footnote, and then the Slipper will go ‘on tour’ to Connells and other businesses. Footnote will also have a window display through-

out December and January showcasing the slipper.

ITC member Mark Reynolds, who is organising the campaign, said: “ITC is a charity, bringing the magic of the theatre to Ivybridge. We are most grateful for the support of local businesses, whose involvement is vital in assisting us in publicity, and of course funding.”

CAFE CULTURE AT THE ERME PRIMARY SCHOOL The children at the Erme Primary School created a pop-up cafe as part of their learning about food and healthy eating.

The children looked at all the different aspects that go into planning a balanced meal and, supported by Food is Fun and Devon Norse, who helped run the event, and Bidvest, who helped with the ingredients, the children got hands-on experience of developing this important life skill.

SUCCESSFUL YEAR At the AGM of Ivybridge Flower Club officers were pleased to report that the past year had been very successful, both financially and with the quality of demonstrators who had entertained members. The officers and committee were elected en bloc, with an additional member joining the committee.

Due to the health of finances, it was proposed not to increase the cost of subscriptions. President, Lynne Bance, thanked the officers and committee for their hard work, and the members for attending before concluding club business.

The club’s next meeting is on 12th November at The Watermark, at 7.30pm, when the demonstrator will be Charlotte Dawe, from Port Isaac. Her title is ‘This, that and a little bit of Christmas Tat’. Visitors 6

HAVING A BALL Members of Ivybridge Theatre Company are now working hard on its production of Cinderella, to be staged at The Watermark during February half-term. The production is a modern telling of this family-favourite pantomime, embracing topical themes and modern personalities.

An all-female clog dancing group is holding free taster sessions each Thursday evening throughout November.

Green Willow Clog, who practice in Dartington village hall every Thursday evening from October to May, are inviting dancers who would like to try North West traditional clog dancing to join them between 8 and 9pm. They would also welcome musicians, too.

LIBRARY FRIENDS’ QUIZ The Friends of Ivybridge Library is holding a fund raising quiz on Thursday, 10th November, at 7pm.

Tickets are £5 (including free raffle tickets) and are available from Ivybridge Library (01752 893140).

The Friends of Ivybridge Library welcome new members to help raise funds and organise community activities. During the last few months they have sponsored the Roald Dahl reading challenge, film and prize winners’ tea, and the Zoo-lab event which took place in August.

The group has also organised a successful grandparent first aid course and a driving safer for longer workshop.

A new ‘games club’ is starting in the library on Tuesday, 22nd November. The Friends are supplying favourite board games like Scrabble, chess, draughts, dominoes and playing cards for people to play, free of charge, between 2-4pm. Everyone is welcome to go along, and enjoy the fun and challenge of the game.

they finished in a comfortable 2nd position, behind Mount Kelly.

At the moment, we are getting stuck into our practical tasks that traditionally take place over the winter months. We are really grateful to everyone who helps and volunteers their time for Dartmoor, and the Rangers run regular events where people help us in many ways, including works on rights of way, litter-picks and restoring archaeological features.

Up-and-coming volunteering events, with no need to book for these – just turn up if you can – include: • Sat 19th Nov: Drop-in Ditch Dig, 10am-12pm. Meet in Princetown to clear ditches along the South Hessary track with Ranger Serina Rouse.

• Sat 19th Nov: Two minute litter pick, 10am-12pm. Meet at Cox Tor car park for a litter pick with Ranger Paul Glanville.

Fireworks With Bonfire Night approaching, make sure you are aware of the laws around buying and settingoff fireworks.

You cannot buy ‘adult’ fireworks if you’re under 18.

It’s against the law for anyone to set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am, except on certain occasions – on Bonfire Night itself the cut off is midnight.

The law says you must not set off or throw fireworks (including sparklers) in the street or other public places.

You can be fined up to £5,000 and imprisoned for up to six months for selling or using fireworks illegally.

You could also get an on-the-spot fine of £90.

We are also working on a long-term project on Eastern side of Dartmoor, the beginning section of the Templer Way around Haytor, uncovering the old granite sleepers that run from the quarries. We started up near the quarries last winter, and have already uncovered over 500 meters. If you are interested in coming to join us, and want to explore a different area of the moor, then this is a bookable event with Ranger Simon Lee slee@dartmoor.gov.uk. Work on the Templer way is on-going, on the second Sunday of every month, meeting at the Haytor visitor centre. If you can lend a hand then get in touch.

THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 RECOUNTING LIFE IN THE TOWN O OO REMEMBERING THE FALLEN

I

n November 1916, the wreckage of airship SS 42 was recovered from the moor near Ivybridge, and it was rebuilt as SS 42a.

The airship had been scrambled to search for German submarines on 15th September. Flight Lieutenant E F Monk was the pilot, and poor weather that day forced him to return to Pembroke after a couple of hours.

However, a gust of very strong wind caught the airship as Monk attempted to land her and she slammed into the ground. Ropes broke loose, the port suspension ripped off and the wireless operator was thrown out. Then SS 42 soared upwards with fuel pouring out of the ruptured tanks, reaching a height of around 7,000 feet. Further damage resulted and she rose another 1,500 feet, but somehow Ft Lt Monk managed to cling on.

Now SS 42 was blown in a southerly direction by air currents at 8,500 feet. She covered around 100 miles over the next three hours, before beginning to descend. Slowly at first, but then faster, the airship spiralled down to earth. The pilot jumped clear just

before the SS 42 hit the ground, injuring himself, but escaping anything serious. When help arrived and Monk enquired about his whereabouts, he discovered that he was on Dartmoor close to the village of Ivybridge.

Remembrance Day Parade and Service The Royal British Legion Ivybridge Branch Remembrance Day Parade and Service takes place on Sunday, 13th November.

Branch Chaplain, Reverend Ken Bromage, will lead the service, which will include readings, hymns, prayers and laying of wreaths.

The Parade will muster at 10.20am outside Ivybridge Motors, before participants fall in and prepare to step off at 10.30am.

Led once again by the magnificent Plymouth Pipe Band, Parade steps off at 10.35am, halting at the War Memorial at 10.45am.

Due to the parade and service, Fore Street, Erme Terrace and part of Harford Road will be closed between 10am and 11.30am.

SCHOOLS It has been a busy autumn so far for pupils at Cornwood C of E Primary School.

With the help of parents and carers, over £100 was raised for MacMillan Cancer Support when the children held an open afternoon to show off their learning and combined this with a delicious cake sale.

Trips

Children of all ages from The Erme Primary School enjoyed taking part in the Big Friendly Read challenge at Ivybridge Library over the summer and were very proud when they were awarded their certificates from

Classes 3 and 4 travelled to London to take in the sights and visit the crown jewels, while children from Class 2 visited Berry Pomeroy Castle and had a go at defending the castle with their archery skills. Both trips were linked to their topics for this term and helped enrich the children’s learning.

This was an ideal challenge for the children, as they had just completed a project on stories of Roald Dahl, which included making life-size murals of some of his most popular characters.

Years 4, 5 and 6 watched a performance on e-safety when The Erme Primary School was visited by Alter Ego Productions.

The play was centred on a girl called Dotty, who got sucked into the internet, where she became an online bully, and befriended a lot of people with whom she shared a lot of information. On her quest to get back home, Dotty met several characters, each of which had an important message to share with Dotty.

Children from Bats and Hedgehogs classes at Manor Primary enjoyed learning a variety of forest skills, including den building, on a visit to Saltram. The children’s topic this term has been learning about and exploring nature and this was a perfect visit to compliment the activities they’ve been involved in back at school.

Harvest Festival The whole school finished off the half term with a traditional Harvest Festival in the church, with the little ‘uns in Class 1 singing ‘What do we do at Harvest time?’.

A super collection of food was gathered, which will be donated to the Ivybridge Foodbank.

Pupils at The Erme Primary School were jumping for joy to celebrate the arrival of three solid wood planters to create a flourishing garden space and educational resource.

The pupils will be able to grow vegetables, fruit and herbs in line with their science syllabus, and plan to launch a gardening club.

The school celebrated with a planting day, with a small team of

PTA volunteers filling the planters with soil so they were ready for the children to plant some strawberries.

The school would like to thank Richardsons Legal Services, who purchased one of the planters and the Friends who raised the rest of the money needed,as well as Mole Valley Farmers, who donated the soil, and a wonderful picnic table for the playground.

Macmillan coffee morning at Manor A coffee morning held by children at Manor Primary School raised an amazing £500 for Macmillan Cancer support.

Parents, carers, elderly neighbours and governors were invited to the fundraising event.

Year 6 children served refreshments in the hall, while all the other year groups entertained visitors with homemade cakes and activities in their classrooms.

well Is your body moving optimally for the stresses and strains of your sport?

Many sports injuries are as a result of a fall or tackle, and often the client recalls, in great detail, the exact mechanism of their injury. This takes a lot of the detective work away from me and I can provide a good impression as to what is injured and how long it will take to recover.

On other occasions, when I ask a client how they injured themselves, they cannot remember a specific incident or occasion that has caused their pain. Sports that involve repetitive movements over long periods of time often cause micro damage to joints and tissues within the body that gradually creep up on us and then pounce with vengeance when we are least expecting it.

In this situation, I tell clients that their body is probably setting itself up for injury and this can be as a result of many things, including S muscle and joint stiffness, muscle

imbalances and poor control, among many other factors.

You are able to get away with these poor biomechanics for a certain period until, eventually, your body cannot handle the stiffness and ‘something goes’. Treatment can often involve lengthy periods of rehabilitation and this is because we are trying to undo years of faulty movement patterns.

During sporting activities, our whole body is being pushed, often to its limits. Strength, flexibility, endurance and a good set of lungs is needed for optimal movement and to cope with the demands of sports.

Do we know our bodies are moving optimally? Do we check to ensure we have optimal movement patterns and are able to cope with the demands of our sports? Let me use this analogy to help highlight my point: When do you check the oil levels in your car? You do not wait until the engine blows. Likewise, a soldier will not wait for his

weapon to stop firing before cleaning it – especially if he is in a tricky situation.

However, with sports injury, we often wait for something to hurt before getting it sorted – even though the problem could have been there for months, or even years.

The rehabilitation process after longstanding movement dysfunction takes longer to resolve and means more time away from sport.

How can you check to see if you are moving well?

Movement screening involves observation of functional movement patterns specific to your sport(s) or activities and assessment of how your joints and muscular system copes with progressively demanding activities. Dysfunction will be highlighted by compensations in your movement or at the onset of fatigue after repeated movements.

If your body is compensating during these simple functional tests, then you will probably also N be compensating for something

during sporting activities – this may be muscle or joint stiffness, muscle imbalances, poor co-ordination / proprioception or poor control to name a few.

Sports physios and movement specialists use a variety of screening exercises to assess your movement patterns. I have posted a few of these on my website – cornwoodphysiotherapy. co.uk – so that you can perform these simple tests at home.

These tests only form part of the picture and if you have any pain or dysfunction, you are advised to seek professional advice.

Knowing that there is a movement dysfunction is the first step in keeping injury free. Knowing what to do about it is the important part. Dealing with Probate yourself

In tough economic times, it comes as no surprise that people are looking to save money at every possible opportunity. This can, however, come at a large cost.

When a loved one dies, you may be left with the responsibility of dealing with their estate, whether through a Will or through the Laws of Intestacy. The role of a personal representative/executor is an important one, and not one to be undertaken lightly.

It is a common misconception that debts die with the deceased. If the estate is able to make payment of the debts, then you are under a duty to ensure that the debt is paid. You are not, however, personally responsible for the payment of debts owed by the estate if it is unable to pay, unless you have made a mistake in the distribution.

Of course, these tools must be used properly and just to emphasis, will not replace the need for a good accountant!

BUSINESS Where did that year go, asks Simon Jilks of Ivybridge Accountants The beginning of November is the first birthday of Ivybridge Accountants Ltd, and thanks to the support of local people and businesses we have seen a strong first year, with so much going on.

On a personal note, one of the directors gave birth and we welcomed Kai into the Lines household.

After surviving the usual hectic January rush we took on our first member of staff, Scott Ledger (great name, huh?), and we moved into our offices in the Town Hall.

It is always a worry as a new business setting out, but we have been made to feel very welcome by the local business community, particularly the Chamber. We were soon looking for a second member of staff, cue Aidan Hall, an ex-college of both Lisa and me. With his safe pair of hands we continued to help more and more

Harriers travel far and wide for success l athletics Erme Valley Harriers athletes turned out in force at the popular off-road Autumn Trail Run, run in Newnham Park.

Andy Norris was the first Harrier home in 5th place overall and 1st mv40. Emma Lake was 3rd lady and 1st fv40, Ken Summers was 1st mv65, and Emma Lake, Anna King and Liz Bowden won the team award.

At the Cardiff 10k, young Joe Perry had a great run on his debut with a time of 37.24. Father Andrew was the first Harrier home in 35.33, followed by Mike Miners (37.19), while Alison Thorn (37.50) was 1st fv40. Joe and Andrew Perry, along with Miners, all achieved personal best times.

At the Newton Abbot Ladies 10K, Emma Lake was 3rd overall and W 1st fv40, with Kate Medlicott 3rd

fv45. The ladies came fourth in the team competition.

Meanwhile, Alison Thorn was 15th overall and 2nd fv40 at the Taunton 10K, with a time of 37.57.

Mark Livermore (1.49.58) and David Lloyd (1.50.03) made the long trip to North Devon for the Barnstaple Half Marathon.

Closer to home, the Harriers performed well in very good conditions for the Plymouth 10K. Mike Miners (37.39) was the first Harrier home, and Alison McEwing (38.05) was 2nd lady but 1st in the female open category. Paddy Trinder (38.18) was 3rd mv40 and Cleo Perry (40.15) 1st fv40.

Four Harriers took part in the Great West Run Half Marathon.

Patrick Wakely (1.44.20) led the quartet home, with Rose Bralsford (1.55.01), Rebecca Lee (1.59.12) and Carol Hansen (2.07.46) all doing well.
