e report on two great examples of community action this month, where like-minded people have got together and through dedication, enthusiasm and a great deal of hard work turned a dream into reality, and in their separate ways achieved things which could have a lasting legacy for Ivybridge.

A fantastic natural play space in MacAndrews Field was officially opened on Easter Monday (see page 5). The play area is the culmination of over three years hard work by the Friends of MacAndrews Field group, and is just one of many projects the Friends are working towards to improve the field as a community facility.

Another initiative has firmly put Ivybridge on the map – initially, at least, in the eyes of the country’s walkers! Members of the Ivybridge Walking Club and Forum are delighted to announce that Ivybridge has been awarded the ‘Walkers Are Welcome’ accolade (see page 7). This national scheme recognises and promotes the town, which still under-sells its enviable position as the Gateway to the Moor and the beautiful South Hams countryside, as a great place for walkers. Do join in with the celebrations at the end of May. A huge ‘well done’ to all involved in these projects.

NATURAL PLAY SPACE INSTANT HIT WITH YOUNGSTERS An exciting new natural play space has opened thanks to the hard work and dedication of a grassroots campaign group.

The MacAndrews Field play area was officially opened on Easter Monday by town Cllr Katie Reville, aided by mayor Karen Pringle and Cllr Mike Starks. The ceremony was followed by an Easter Egg Hunt to celebrate the occasion.

The play area is the culmination of over three years hard work, research and fundraising by the dedicated group of local residents who make up The Friends of MacAndrews Field, whose efforts were praised by mayor Karen Pringle in her ad-

dress at the ceremony.

Cllr Reville, chair of Parks and Open Spaces for Ivybridge Town Council, said: “I am really impressed with the dedication and hard work that has been put in by the Friends to improve the field as a community facility and habitat for local wildlife.

“The new play area is an excellent addition to the field and my little ones have loved exploring it.”

The play space was specially designed by a playground-design company, with input from the local community.

Funding, in large, came from the monies awarded to the Friends Group through The Big Green Space Challenge, a SHDC

scheme to enhance parks and other green spaces in the area. Ivybridge Town Council, too, provided financial support.

The group also won one of Skipton Building Society’s Grassroots Giving Big 160 awards, which went towards the play area.

Vera Dumbleton, of the Friends of MacAndrews Field group, said: “We are very excited to see the play area up and running.

There has been lots of hard work done to get to this point and we are very grateful to the funders.

“We are extremely grateful for the efforts of Cllrs Reville and Starks, and a very big thank-you to SHDC’s Greenspace Officer, Keith Rennells, for his guidance.”

COMMUNITY GARDEN DESIGN UNDERWAY A local sustainability group has enlisted the help of a local landscape designer to draw up plans for Ivybridge’s first community garden space.

PL:21 is working with Helen Williams, of Helens Naturescapes, on a design for the patch of land around the youth centre that will be

turned into a community vegetable garden.

A professional design will help ensure the most is made of the space, and that it is safe for people to work in. It will also help with applications for any funding needed to develop and look after the garden.

needing a hand with the physical development of the site and would welcome any home grown veggies and herbs anyone can spare.

SCHOOL LINES UP RECORD ATTEMPT

SOCIAL NETWORK FOR WIDOWS

Pupils at the Erme Primary School are set to line up their bid for a Guinness World Record this month.

The school will attempt the record for the longest line of stationary items lined end-to-end this month.

Pens and stationary items will be lined up in Victoria Park on Wednesday, 21 May, 2014, before being counted and the bid submitted to the Guinness World Record team for the evaluation.

Set up of the attempt will start at 9am, and people are invited to join them to watch the final celebrations from 2.30pm.

A new social network for widows has been launched in Ivybridge.

Jolly Dollies aims to help widows regain a social life through friendship and organised social events.

The Ivybridge group held its inaugural meeting at the end of April and is encouraging anyone who would like to join to get in touch and help develop the group and its activities.

Started by widows for widows, the Jolly Dollies network connects widows, locally and nationally, who want and deserve to have a full, happy and supportive social life.

Buddle Close is built in the vicinity of the old ‘Buddle Meadow’ of Stowford. A Buddle was an inclined trough, made of granite, in which crushed ore (tin) was washed with running

water to flush away impurities.

There was an ancient culvert near Stowford House which carried the spring water from Well Park through Buddle Meadow for this purpose.

Ivybridge County Councillor Roger Croad (inset) bowled the first wood of the season when he opened Ivybridge Bowling Club’s green on 12 April.

On a lovely day, members took part in the traditional ‘spider’ contest – where each bowler stands

around the edge of the green and on the command bowls a wood into the centre of the green, with the one nearest the jack winning a bottle of wine – and then teamed up to play a friendly, but competitive ladies versus men competition.

AU REVOIR TO ENTENTE CORDIAL Ivybridge French Twinning Association has been dissolved due to falling member numbers.

The Association was started in 1972 by Jack Condon to support the cultural exchange, commercial opportunities and inter-schools exchange.

At its height, the Associa-

tion prospered with full coaches crossing the channel in both directions, but gradually the numbers involved declined.

At the last AGM, no volunteers came forward to fill officer vacancies, so it was decided to end the Association after 40 years of ‘Entente Cordial’.

MEDICAL MERGER CREATES NEW SUPER GP PRACTICE Ivybridge Medical Practice has merged with two other surgeries to create a new GP practice.

They have joined forces with Plym River Practice and The Ridgeway Practice to become The Beacon Medical Group.

While patients will notice no immediate difference, future benefits from being part of a single large practice could include the introduction of evening

appointments and to be able to choose to see any doctor at any site.

The new practice is also hoping to offer community-based specialist services including orthopaedic and dermatology clinics, and is investigating what other services it can offer for the future.

The practices will be one of the biggest in the South West, and the largest training practice in the region.

DARTMOOR CYCLE CHALLENGE

Harry’s Patch – a Lest We Forget Centenary project As part of its commemorations to mark the Centenary of the start of the First World War, the Ivybridge branch of The Royal British Legion has embarked on an ambitious ‘Lest We Forget’ project.

The brainchild of Ray Wilson, it will see the transformation of a patch of grass near the centre of the town, beside the roundabout opposite the police station, into a Garden of Remembrance and a living memorial to Ivybridge men who fought and died in the Great War. A hardy group of volunteers from the branch,

with some welcome helpers, have cleared the ground and rotovated the soil and many bulbs have been planted.

The site is marked by a wooden sign (above) which bears an extract from the famous poem In Flanders Fields by John

MacRae and will soon also have river boulders and the two benches, which have been kindly donated. Before long, the poppy seeds themselves will be sown.

The branch plan to hold a dedication ceremony for Harry’s Patch on Saturday 19 July, 2014, at 11am.

The current total of the Ivybridge Poppy Appeal, collected since October 2013, now stands at £18,706.

The branch would like to express its thanks to everyone who has given so generously.

Could you spare a few hours in November to collect for the next Poppy Appeal? New collectors are always welcome – contact details are below.

The branch is busy bagging poppy seeds for distribution to school children in the Ivybridge area.

Each bag contains poppy seeds mixed with sand and a little card with sowing instructions.

Each child is invited to sow the poppy seeds to grow their own poppies, which will hopefully increase their awareness of the significance of the poppy.

The branch will be at the Lions Club Fun Day, at Ivybridge Rugby Club on Saturday, 5 July. Some exciting additions to the usual stand are planned, so make sure you pop along.

A day of spectacular cycling is assured with the return of the third Heart of Dartmoor Cycle Challenge to Ivybridge on Saturday, 17 May 2014.

Organised by Devon Wildlife Trust, this year promises to be the biggest and best yet. There are a choice of three routes ranging from the Classic at 46 miles (road only) or 50 miles (includes nine miles on tracks) to the King of the Mountains, an arduous 75 mile ride.

Whichever route they take, entrants will cycle through some of Dartmoor’s finest scenery, finding secret

hidden river valleys, dark woodlands and high moors with rugged granite tors looking down.

Whether with friends or on your own, the routes are way marked or you can join a group ride for the Classic. Lunch and backup vehicles are provided.

EVERY DARTMOOR MILE IN A PHOTO Last month, Jo Burgess told how every square mile of Dartmoor has a least one subject of interest and how she has chronicled this in a journal and with photos. Her photographic montage of all 368 square miles (left) is now on display in the library.

CENTRE’S INSTANT CONNECTION Creative Connections, the new arts and crafts centre in Glanvilles Mill, where people can shop, share and create, held a fantastic open day on 12 April to mark its opening. Scores of people attended and met the team behind the enterprise, as well as look around the shop and workshop and have a go at some craft and art activities.

Anniversary celebrations with style

New focus for camera club Ivybridge & District Camera Club is trying out a different programme of events this year, reducing the number of in-house competitions and including more ‘workshop’ oriented evenings and guest speakers.

The new scheme has been widely approved by members, and will probably be continued for next year’s programme.

Recently, members enjoyed a ‘close-up and macro evening’. The evening started with a short talk about macro and close-up photography, then members set up ministudios and photographed the various props and small objects they had brought along.

Members were encouraged to demonstrate their set-ups and a great deal of ideasswapping and technical skill was gained.

The club meets from 7.30pm on Tuesday evenings (except the third in the month) at the Community Hall in Bittaford. New members and visitors are welcome. There is a summer break in July and August, but occasional outings may be organised.

Summer sequel next up As the laughter finally fades following Ivybridge Theatre Company’s comedy production, it is on with the next show!

Members are busy rehearsing a sequel to the children’s classic tale and last summer’s hit production, The Wind in the Willows, which has been adapted for the stage by ITC. It still retains the humour and memorable characters such as Ratty, Mole, Mr Badger, Toad and the rather unruly weasels and ferrets!

Erme WI celebrated its 50th Anniversary in style with over 50 guests and members enjoying singing, poems – some written especially for the occasion – and a 1964 quiz.

Maggie Duffy provided the entertainment in her Devon dialect way and Rick Green has provided an album of photographs to remind us of the special event.

A delicious homemade buffet was enjoyed and the cake was cut by Mrs Sibby Rogers, who was the first president all those years ago, accompanied by Betty Rowe, Barbara Hosgood and Barbara Churchward,

who were also original members. Margaret Jewers was also there at the start.

Latest news from Ivybridge Town Council Community Action Plan

Ten years ago, the Town Council worked with community representatives to produce the Community Action Plan and Ann O’Kane was the Chairman of the Ivybridge Area Partnership. That plan included developments at Filham Park, formation of an Environmental Group, child friendly heritage trail and of course the new Library and entertainment facility (The Watermark).

Whilst much has been achieved it is timely to review the plan and see what still needs to be done and what new issues need to be addressed.

If you, or your group, would be interested in getting involved and helping to shape the future of the town for the next 10 years please contact us and we can ensure you are consulted and have an opportunity to participate in the process.

Filham Park

Ivybridge Cricket Club has been working hard over the winter season to enhance the facilities at Filham Park. The extension to the clubhouse will be open by May 2014 and they would welcome visitors to come and watch the cricket and enjoy some refreshments whilst sitting on the balcony area.

On 11 May, South Hams Metal Detecting Club will be having a ‘dig’ in the park, starting at 9.30am and finishing at 4pm. If anyone wants to see what is involved and chat to the people doing the metal detecting then please come along. Already one resident has asked if the team could try and find a piece of jewellery that was lost, so if anyone else has lost something metal do let us know…

Anything valuable will be assessed and proceeds would be split 50:50 between the club and the Mayor’s Charity. (If the weather or ground is wet then the event will be postponed.)

Victoria Park

The new swings and wooden play train will be installed in early June – ready for the summer, hopefully with the prospect of good weather for the children to enjoy playing outdoors.

We are pleased to welcome Councillor Sara Hladkij to the Council and she joins our Councillors in helping residents in the Woodlands Ward.

Youth services

The Town Council is exploring with the Trustees of Ivybridge Youth Venue how we can help with funding some of the costs to enable events like the Friday Youth Nights at the Leisure Centre to continue, which are enjoyed by up to 90 young people. If you have experience of working with young people or wish to volunteer your assistance or have ideas for ways in which youth services can continue in Ivybridge, then please contact us.

A new broom sweeps into The Watermark in May when we welcome a new catering manager.

Hayley Edgcombe, previously of The National Trust, brings with her a wealth of experience both in coffee shop and event catering.

Look out for the new seasonal menu including delicious homemade cakes, new hot food and snacks. If you have a special occasion coming up and would like to use The Watermark, contact Hayley and Babs to discuss your booking and catering needs.

Comedy

Now becoming well established for comedy, The Watermark has two very different offerings for May. On May Day Bank holiday Monday, 5 May, we welcome Mark Steel with his ‘Back in Town’ tour and on the following Sunday, 11 May, The Ivybridge New Comedian of the Year competition, judged by wellknown local names and hosted by the famous comedy circuit compares Paul B Edwards and Silky. Following a visit in April by Channel 4’s own ‘Chatty Man’, The Watermark is now on the map for top name comedians.

Devon County Show tickets are on sale at The Watermark Information Centre. Savings and special offers are available which will not be offered at the gate.

Let’s hope for a few days of dry weather and sunshine to enjoy this fabulous celebration of the great Devon countryside.

The atrium exhibition for May and June will be ‘A Special Place’ photographic display on behalf of Blossom, a local charity.

Cycling

With the Tour of Britain cycling returning to Devon this September, the Information Centre at The Watermark have a good selection of cycle maps for sale, including the trails which make up the Two Moors Way. So if you are inspired to ‘get on your bike’ this is a great form of exercise and a brilliant way to see our beautiful local countryside.

Europe’s best Led Zeppelin tribute band, Letz Zep, celebrate the work of this timeless rock band on Saturday, 10 May, and on Friday, 30 May, John Jones and the Reluctant Ramblers arrive on their local leg of their Two Moors, Two Seas tour. The same weekend, Ivybridge will be celebrating the Walker’s are Welcome event. Join John on Friday for an evening of fine music and the following morning not so reluctant ramblers will be walking the Erme Plym Trail and South West Coast Path to Noss Mayo.

On Saturday, 5th July, at 7.30pm The Watermark hosts Bake it Big with The Great British Bake Off contestant Glenn Cosby.

17-18 May A great weekend of tennis is set to be served up by South Devon Tennis Centre Ivybridge this month.

The Great British Tennis Weekend comes to Ivybridge on 17 and 18 May, when the tennis centre holds a series of activities as part of a national initiative by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) to open up tennis centres to everyone and showcase the fantastic facilities and opportunities they have to offer.

On Saturday, 17 May, from 2.30pm, the centre’s tennisMAD coaching team will be running lots of fun tennis activities for all the family to enjoy, including family mini tennis, adult cardio tennis, tennis party games, adult tennis xpress and family free play – whatever your age or ability there’ll be something for everyone.

On Sunday, 18 May, there will be free play during the day, so that you can come down WEDNESDAy 7th

with your family and have a game on the inside or outside courts, and it will not cost you a penny.

It is a fantastic opportunity to find out all about tennis and how it is accessible for everyone, whether you’re a fitness freak or you’re just trying to get back into the sport after many years. The centre will be open from 9am.

South Devon Tennis Centre always has something going on, with top class coaches and courts for you play on. You can also enjoy a coffee or drink in the bar area, which will be open during the weekend.

The centre has four indoor and four floodlit outdoor courts, so whatever the weather at the weekend, you will be able to enjoy the best of both worlds.

Training hard to tackle Dartmoor challenge YEAR SIX CHILDREN at The Erme are training hard ahead of the forthcoming Junior Ten Tors expedition.

The youngster have been giving up their weekends to train on Dartmoor, covering walks of varying distances, all leading up to the

expedition taking place on 13/14 June, where teams have to walk 18 miles and camp overnight.

Their training has taken them across the south moor, including Ducks Pool, which required careful navigation to get there; here,

the children took great pride in signing the visitors book to mark their achievement.

The team have experienced thick fog, rain, hail and strong winter winds, leaving them prepared for any weather except sunshine!

RE-TELLING THE EASTER STORY YEAR 4 CHILDREN at Stowford School retold the Easter story at the school’s Easter Service for children and parents at the Methodist Church.

Drawing on their RE work so far this year, and supported by minister Ralph Ward, they explained why Jesus was so popular and why he was loved and admired by so many people in his time, before re-telling the Easter story, with the help of videos they had filmed at school.

THE FOUNDATION classes at Woodlands Park Primary School had an egg-citing time on their Easter egg hunt morning with parents.

They sang the Spring Chicken song, made ‘Spring chickens’ and tasted their yummy chocolate nests... not forgetting their Easter egg pattern hunt.

THE CHILDREN at Manor Primary celebrated early Easter with the arrival of four baby chicks!

After incubating the eggs in school, and learning all about how the chicks develop, they were very excited when at last the eggs started to hatch! The babies, which now have lots of tiny feathers, are being lovingly cared for by the children and will join the school’s growing menagerie.

AFTER WINNING the local stage of the Football League’s ‘Kids’ Cup’, Manor Primary had the honour of representing Plymouth Argyle in the next round of the competition.

Up against some of the best teams in the south of England, and despite missing out on the final, the tournament was a fantastic experience for the boys involved, who showed great skill and team spirit.

The team have plenty more football ahead of them and are currently maintaining a 100% winning record in the Ivybridge League!

Actionaid’s training programme work in partnership with Patience’s community and the money raised by Woodlands Park Primary supports her school where she is learning to read and write. Immogen Pope and Anna Baker reported that the day had raised £60 for her.

It’s OK – we only have a ‘Licence’ over the property

T

he term lease and licence can be used interchangeably by landlords, tenants and managing agents alike. The common held mistake: calling a document a ‘licence’ will give the occupier less protection and can be terminated at any time.

However, whether it would be regarded as a ‘lease’ or ‘licence’ by the courts will not depend on its label, but the facts surrounding the occupation.

Most importantly, in terms of a tenancy are the following two requirements: 1. Exclusive possession 2. Of a defined premises.

Payment of rent might provide evidence that a tenancy exists, but it is not a requirement and nor is a fixed term at the start of the occupancy.

So why does it matter?

The difference is very important for business premises. If the

occupation is regarded as a tenancy, the tenants may have valuable rights under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954, mostly security to remain in occupation. A genuine tenancy at will or licence to occupy will not.

Therefore, it is important to take legal advice before entering into/ or allowing occupation of a property because you could find you have agreed to a legal relationship you had not intended.

ARTIST’S CHARITY PAINTING OF PLYMOUTH OF OLD An artist who raised over £900 for the Dame Hannah Rogers Trust with her paintings of Victorian Ivybridge is aiming to raise more money for the charity with a painting recreating old Plymouth city centre.

THE EASTER BUNNY I have had four large, gold foil wrapped Lindt Bunnies on my kitchen shelf, waiting to be given to my children and friends. I only wish that my real rabbits stayed put when I turned my back.

I have two pet rabbits, an old grumpy white one, of indeterminate breed and age, called ‘Dumbledore’, (he arrived with this name from Woodside Sanctuary) and a young, pretty, grey and white Dutch called Tuesday – my name choice: it was the day I chose her at Woodside to replace Poppy, Dumbledore’s 11-year-old soul mate who had died three days previously.

Dumbledore was standing vigil on the spot where Poppy had died and had not left it, even to eat or drink. He was dying of a broken heart. It is a fact that rabbits need rabbit company, to be able to pair bond and make deep, lifelong friendships, sharing food, sleeping space, playing,

watching and mutual grooming. A neutered boy-girl coupling usually works best.

Having lost a venerable steady matriarch, gaining Tuesday was a bit like getting a mail order Thai bride. She ran rings around poor, bemused Dumbledore and she liked to escape. The rabbits share a 10 foot square, enclosed part of the garden with a tree in it that they can burrow under; they have plastic tunnelling, a bench to jump on and connected to this, by a rabbit run tunnel, is a large

This was not enough for Tuesday.

My carefully tended flower borders, with their tender green shoots, were no longer safe. My neighbours told me that as soon as I left the house, Tuesday would appear at large in the garden, nipping off a green shoot or tasty tulip head here and there.

I decided that this had to stop and the enclosure needed to become more rabbit proof.

Jonathan, my kind husband, spent £60 on material, and most of a

day doing DIY, erecting a five-foot high fence, with a buried base, to impede burrowing out.

The next day, I woke expecting to find the rabbits contently cuddled together, but no, there was Tuesday, smack bang in the middle of the rockery eating tender alpines. We were rather foxed as to how she could have escaped.

As the evening wore on, she eventually appeared back beside Dumbledore and I hastened, stealthily, to shut the gate behind her. I had spent a good deal of time blocking off impossibly smalllooking gaps, and I was relieved and a little smug to wake the next day and see Tuesday still within her enclosure. She was tossing carrots and flowerpots around and rather crossly rearranging her space. Ask me next Tuesday if she is still the right side of the fence!

NEARLY ALL of us have a telescopic zoom feature on our cameras, but how often do we use our feet alongside our zoom? This month, I'm going to discuss using our legs to bring forward subjects from the background. Strangely, we have to walk away from the subject for it to work.

Out on Dartmoor at Nun's Cross last springtime, I wanted to make the cross the main feature in this photograph. It is a wild place, quite remote with distant hills and on this day there were fastmoving shadows from the clouds on them. I quite liked the feeling of wild open space the smaller photograph gave (below), and tried several variations. I shot these with the camera’s zoom set wide so as to enhance the feeling of space; and as discussed previously, I knew I would likely crop the image and remove the bare foreground and perhaps the walkers when I got home.

I took several similar photos while waiting for the shadows on the distant hillside, and trying various positions for the cross. But nothing really felt quite right and I decided that I wanted the farm to be more prominent in the image, even if it was at the expense of that wide open feeling. Of course, If I

had just zoomed in, the stone cross would have become bigger too and only part of it would be represented in the shot.

The solution was to walk backwards some distance, which allows the farm to be zoomed in and thus appear bigger, but walking away also reduces the cross to an acceptable height. If you study the top photograph you'll see that although it appears taller, in fact it takes a smaller proportion of the image than it does in the wide angle shot. How can this be?

It does seem strangely perverse to walk away from the scene in order to bring items forward in our photograph, but as we move backward we have to readjust the zoom to keep the foreground items to the same size, so the zoomed distant objects take on a different relationship to foreground objects. The effect is called perspective. It happens visually as well as in the camera, where it is called visual perspective; our brains make use of it to tell distance and make sense of the world. We just don't notice that objects have changed their relative sizes unless we deliberately think about it.

So, one of my tips this time is to use zoom along with your feet. Your own position in the photograph is equally as important to the composition as your subjects are.

In the main photograph you'll see that I have also knelt down, reducing the amount of foreground bare earth seen in the image. I have also waited for the shadows on the hillside to be prominent while still having the subjects well illuminated. Waiting for the light is my other main tip this month.

THE SPECTACULARLY scenic Ivybridge 10K road race, hosted by Erme Valley Harriers, looks set to be as popular as ever, with the 775 runner entry limit expected to be filled ahead of the event.

This year’s race is on Saturday, 10 May, starting at 6.30pm from Ivybridge Station Car park and finishing at Ivybridge Rugby Club.

There is an extensive prize list across a large spread of age categories, and £100 cash on offer if the male and female course records are bettered. All finishers receive a quality race memento T-shirt.

Entry is £13 (£11 for those with an England Athletics Competition License). Pre- and post-race sports massage will be available at race HQ (Ivybridge Rugby Club), where there is changing, showers, refreshments and a licensed bar.

THE NEW LEAGUE cricket season gets underway on Saturday, 3 May, with Ivybridge Cricket Club’s 1st and 2nd XIs facing a ‘double header’ against Stoke Gabriel.

The 2nds get league action underway at Filham Park, while the first team have to wait until the following week to get their home campaign started.

As well as two sides in the Devon cricket league on Saturdays, the club also has a Sunday XI playing in the South Devon league and a midweek XI competing in the Plymouth & District evening league.

The 1st XI will also compete in the Plymouth 20/20 competition, which starts on Thursday, 25 May, with a home game against local rivals Plympton (6pm start).

The club runs four colts sides at under 11, 13 and 15 levels, playing mostly in midweek.

ATHLETES OF Erme Valley Harriers have competed well in several recent marathon races.

Harriers’ had six athletes at the London Marathon, with Alison McEwing having a fantastic run with a time of 2.59.39 and setting a new ladies’ club record. The next three athletes were close together – Sarah Hirons (3.20.20), Emma Lake (3.20.36) and Ewan Lake (3.20.38). Nick McMahon (3.54.07) and Neil Travers (3.59.41) both went under four hours.

At the Greater Manchester Marathon, Jo Edwards set a new club 45 female vet record (3.30.25) on her debut marathon.

Al Hoskin achieved a personal best time of 3.16.29 at the Taunton Marathon.

Elsewhere, Andrew Perry had a great run to finish 19th overall, in a time of 1.20.34, at the 34

One of the most successful seasons in recent times, which has seen outstanding achievements at all levels of the club, is drawing to a close for Ivybridge Rugby Club.

The club’s first XV led by example, winning the Tribute Western Counties League and gaining promotion to Tribute South West 1 next season, and they are still to play the final of the Devon Intermediate Cup. The 2nd XV currently occupy the runners-up spot in the Merit table, after a season which saw them claim the scalps of 2nd teams of clubs several divisions above them.

Mini/junior rugby at the club continues to thrive, with over 270 players participating in the sport. A successful minis tour saw many age groups, including the U12s and U7s, bring back winners’ trophies from the Oakmeadieans Festival, and the success continued at the annual Hornets Festival. The winning streak was maintained by the U10s and U9s at the Devon Festivals, with wins in their respective competitions.

The club’s successes also saw the U15s triumph at the Devon 7s, while the U11s are due to travel to Twickenham to compete in the next stage of the Land Rover Cup, after becoming SW Champions in their age group. The U13s were also runners up in their Devon Cup final.

Will’s achievements owe much to the encouragement and guidance of Kirk Salmon, now-retired PE teacher at ICC. Kirk was tireless in trying to spot and encourage talent in the youngsters and his efforts in nurturing local sporting talent are greatly appreciated.
