An exciting new scheme to encourage residents to think ‘Ivybridge First’ for shopping and services has been launched, which gives you the chance to win a monthly prize of £100 - see page five for details.

We are being encouraged to enjoy the great outdoors this month with the return of the Ivybridge Walking & Outdoor Festival. It’s all about enjoying and exploring the wonderful countryside around us and whether you want to walk, cycle or run there is an event for you – details on page 17.

Also this month, the library and town council launch their Diamond Jubilee poetry competition (page 13), a group of cadets are busy training for a gruelling charity trek (page 30), and we have details of Easter services at the town’s churches (page 24). WALKING AROUND the town, as I do once a month delivering the magazine, certainly gives you a different perspective from, say, popping into town in the car to pick up a bit of shopping.

There are some simply stunning houses, of all shapes and sizes, and our town enjoys amazing views in all directions. And just when you think you’ve seen it all, you stumble upon another hidden gem.

That was certainly the case for me when I discovered Ivybridge Bowling Club. I was delivering one of the early issues of the magazine in Bridge Park, busily popping magazines through doors, when suddenly a green and pleasant oasis appeared!

This quiet, pristine square of grass seemed to be a world away from the busy Exeter Road and hustle and bustle of Fore Street not far away.

As it turns out, the bowling club’s green has been in Bridge Park for nearly 90 years, as the feature on page nine reveals.

Win £100 for thinking ‘Ivybridge First’ grabs simply by using shops and businesses in the town thanks to an exciting new scheme to boost business in the town.

Over 30 businesses have joined the Ivybridge First initiative, which has been developed by the town’s Chamber of Commerce in an effort to encourage residents to think ‘Ivybridge First’ when they need shopping and services.

To be in with a chance to win, all you have to do is complete a draw ticket, available in any of the businesses which have joined the scheme. Entry to the draw is free and doesn’t require a purchase, but you must be 16 or over to enter. At the beginning of each month a draw will be held and one lucky entrant

Rainbows need help to continue A RAINBOW UNIT in Ivybridge is looking for new helpers to keep it open after one of its long-standing leaders decided to stand down.

Rainbows are the youngest members of Girlguiding (5-7 years) and the Ivybridge unit has been run by Dee Spiller and Deborah Pitt for around 12 years.

Dee is due to stand down at Easter, and co-leader Deborah needs extra helpers in order for the unit to be able to continue.

Rainbows meet for one hour on Tuesday evenings, when the girls play games, make crafts and participate in other activities. They also go on outings, many special Rainbow-only events. Rainbows allow girls to enjoy a wide range of exciting activities and the

unit takes girls from all the local schools, so they make new friends too.

Any potential helper needs to be over 18 and it would be possible either to become a trained leader in Girlguiding, or just be a helper for the unit.

The town is the Gallery IVYBRIDGE ARTS Festival is due to be launched later this year and organisers want to hear from anyone who would like to take part.

They are looking for people and groups who have something to offer in the widest creative arts sense, as well as people who may have space to host an exhibition.

Painter, ecological artist and moorland guide Amanda Pellatt (pictured) invites you to join her for a fun, participatory stroll along the riverbank through Longtimber Woods on Wednesday, 4 April. The walk will be wheelchair and buggy accessible, so all our welcome.

Anyone interested should meet at 11am in Harford Road car park and should bring their camera and notebook, and wear suitable clothing, boots or wellies.

This first walk is part of Active Dartmoor Week (www.dartmoor.co.uk) in support of Dartmoor Rescue and is part of a series of regular walks around Ivybridge and south Dartmoor.

CONCERNS FOR THE safety of the increasing number of people who attend the town’s Remembrance Day service has prompted a call to the town council to consider re-locating the town’s War Memorial.

Last year’s service is estimated to have attracted over 2,500 people and this year it is anticipated that this figure will be even higher as Armistice Day falls on a Sunday.

The current location also leads to frustration for participants, who are unable to see and appreciate the service taking place, suffers from background noise from the river, leads to the inconvenience of road closures and is increasingly costly to police, the council was told.

Land at the entrance to Erme Court car park was suggested as one possible site, and would be big enough to accommodate the town’s American memorial as well.

Another suggestion gaining support is that, if it was felt that the War Memorial should be moved then it should become the centre piece of a new town square, the development of which was one of the key recommendations to come out of the masterplanning process.

IVYBRIDGE LIBRARY and The Watermark teamed up for a scaly-themed celebration of World Book Day in March.

Children were invited to make dragons in the library before a special showing of How to Train your Dragon at the new and improved Saturday morning children’s cinema.

With the town’s bowling green set to open for the new season this month, we take a look at the history of bowls in the town

Plenty of ends in sight

W

hen the first wood rolls on the pristine, carpetlike green to mark the start of the new season, one of Ivybridge’s longest established, but also perhaps little known, clubs will embark on another season of friendly and competitive sport in the heart of the town.

Ivybridge Bowls Club was established at Bridge Park in 1923, and to this day continues to play this most

gentle of past times at its peaceful oasis within a residential area at the eastern end of town.

While there appears to be no record of a bowling green in Ivybridge previous to 1923, there were members who bought the land for the new bowling green, so did they play elsewhere?

Membership of the club in those days consisted of the business gentlemen in and around Ivybridge.

the men went away to serve in the forces and the club all but closed.

However, in 1947 the manager of Stowford Mill came to the rescue and placed the Bowling Club into the care of the then ‘Portals Athletic Club’ (this was the name of the paper mill’s sports club at that time).

It was due to the generosity of the Paper Mill that the Bowling Club survived these difficult years. They paid for a new green to be laid in 1956, and improved facilities, including toilets and a kitchen sink and changing rooms for visitors, as the years went by.

This support, in addition to fully maintaining the bowling surface, carried on until the 1990s.

Old photographs show there was no special dress code for members, who played in their everyday clothes. By 1963, however, more attention was given to dressing correctly for the game.

It was not until the 1950s that ladies were invited to bowl on the green, but ‘only when the men were not wanting to play’. A few ladies did play occasionally in those days, but

only for a year or two.

A ladies section was officially established in 1979 and from small beginnings, six ladies, has gone from strength-to-strength and is now an integral, flourishing part of the club, able to meet all the challenges of the present day.

A year earlier, in 1978, it was agreed that juniors, 16 to 18 years old, could join the club.

As the club grew stronger, the paper mill decided, in 1998, to hand the responsibility of the club back to its members, so, once again, Ivybridge Bowls Club became completely independent.

It is very much a self-help club, with all the maintenance and care of the green and clubhouse done by volunteers, which as well as fostering a close-knit club atmosphere also keeps the members’ fees down to a minimum.

Members enjoy many opportunities to play bowls, both competitively and in relaxed and friendly situations, such as a ‘Wednesday club night’ and ‘Monday morning rollups’. Friendly mixed matches against

other clubs are played both home and away and numerous in-house competitions are played each year.

The men and women’s sections both play in their respective Plymouth and District leagues and those members who have the time and desire enter County competitions; over the years, they have brought back impressive honours to the club.

Members are currently working against the clock to finish work improving the clubhouse facilities in time for the opening day of the 2012 season on Saturday, 14 April.

The club would be delighted to welcome new members for the coming season. They offer free coaching for beginners and improvers and equipment is available on loan.

There are no age restrictions for club membership, and bowls is a game that can be played from early teens through to 70/80+ years of age.

Ivybridge Bowling Club is a mixed, friendly club with a wide range of abilities and ages and offers a great opportunity to play recreational and competitive bowling at its peaceful oasis in the heart of the town.

Diamond Jubilee Poetry Competition

Celebrate in verse

A

s part of the town’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, you have the chance to celebrate the Queen’s 60-year reign in verse with the library and town council’s Queen’s Diamond Jubilee poetry competition.

Budding poets of all ages (residents of Ivybridge and those living within a 10 mile radius) can submit a poem to mark this auspicious year for our Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. All entries will be accorded the honour of being read out on stage at the Diamond Jubilee Party in the Park in Victoria Park on Tuesday, 5 June, either by the writer(s), a nominated representative or by the event’s Master of Ceremonies.

ENTRY FORM

As well as four individual categories, there are group categories to give families, residential home residents, clubs etc the opportunity to work together on an entry. The individual categories are up to 7 years of age, 8-11 years of age, 12-15 years of age and 16 years and over/adult.

Group categories are children’s group (age range up to 10 years), Youth Group (age range 11-16 years), Adult Group (17 years and over) and Family Group.

Competition rewards!

The winner in each category will receive a trophy plus a small prize, and enjoy the prestige of having their entry published in The Ivybridge magazine.

All entries will be read out at the Diamond Jubilee Party, as well as bound into a celebratory volume and kept for posterity within the Library’s Local Heritage Collection and posted on the town council website www.ivybridge.gov.uk How to enter Poems should be submitted, along with the entry form below, to either the library or the town hall (both in Erme Court) by Friday, 18 May, 2012 – or you can email your poem to deptownclerk@ivybridge.gov.uk.

igrating birds are now beginning to return after spending the winter in southern Europe and Africa. One you might hear rather than see is the chiffchaff, with a song that sounds like its name.

Towards the end of April we expect to hear the first cuckoo, a bird now sadly in sharp decline. We have not heard it in Ivybridge for several years but it is often heard on the golf course at Wrangaton.

The amazing photo of an enormous young cuckoo being fed by a tiny meadow pipit was taken last summer near Vennford Reservoir by John Walters, a brilliant local wildlife photographer.

The female cuckoo found a meadow pipit’s nest, tipped one of the eggs out and laid one of her own which looked almost identical. When it hatched, the young cuckoo, still blind, got rid of the remaining eggs and was fed by the FIND OUT MORE

Author visit highlight of reading week A VISIT FROM an author was one of the highlights of Woodlands Park Primary School’s Reading Week, as Lily Evans (9) and Immogen Pope (9) report: This week has been reading week.

An author called Tom McLaughlin came in and read us one of his stories.

The story he read was called Diabolical Mr Tiddles. The story was about a cat called Mr Tiddles who wants to please his owner by giving him lots of presents.

The owner wonders after a while where the presents come from, so one

night the owner follows Mr Tiddles and finds out where the presents come from...

After the story Tom answered some of our questions: When did you get the idea to write stories? How many books have you written? How long does it take to write one story? Which do you do first, illustrating or writing?

Tom then showed us how to draw Mr Tiddles and we had our own go at drawing Mr Tiddles. Tom was kind enough to sign some of our own drawings.

Swimming success STOWFORD SCHOOL’S swimmers put up a strong showing at the Plymouth Schools’ Swimming Gala.

The school took four teams to the event, with both of the girls’ teams and the boys’ A team making it through to the final.

In the finals, the girls’ A team finished second, losing out to Plymouth College, while the B team came in fourth.

The boys A team stormed to victory and became overall boys’ winners.

“Mathematician of the Month” challenge launched CHILDREN, STAFF and parents at Stowford School are all set to get enthusiastic about maths with the launch of a regular “Mathematician of the Month” competition.

Each month, children can choose to solve a maths challenge appropriate to their ability. Competitors have two weeks to complete their task and the winners will be announced in assembly. There is also an adult challenge for parents and staff to have a go.

Maths co-ordinator Anne Burns said: “We want to encourage children not just to “number crunch” but to develop logical, problem solving approaches.

“We hope it will also give children and their parents the chance to have some interesting and productive maths discussions.”

Jubilee capsule YEAR 7 STUDENTS have been helping the Queen celebrate her special year by writing stories about a particularly significant day in their lives.

There was a unique quality to all of the stories, which can be found on the Jubilee Time Capsule website.

STUDENTS FROM YEARS 7-9 got a taste of a career in journalism when they visited the BBC studios in Plymouth.

The visit was part of BBC School Report, an annual event which gives students the chance to work alongside the BBC and culminated in News Day on 15 March, when the Ivybridge CC School Report page linked live to the BBC. The visit gave the students a real feel for the work involved in putting together a news bulletin. They briefly met Justin Leigh and Victoria Graham, the Spotlight presenters, learnt about interviewing methods and watched a demonstration of how a satellite van operates. They also saw the lunchtime regional bulletin being produced.

Catering Corps invade college Four members of the Army visited the College to talk to the students about a career in the Armed forces within the catering sector.

As part of the session, teams of students were given 50 minutes to produce as much attractive (and edible) food as possible from ration packs for 20 soldiers.

The students impressed the visitors with some wonderful and imaginative dishes, including omelettes, risottos, pasta dishes and even fruit and chocolate kebabs.

Primary teachers enjoy art training day Teachers from the college’s feeder primary schools attended a skills day to promote creativity and confidence in art. A packed day of practical taster sessions and top tips covered a range of skills including creating artist reference pages, painting and drawing skills, mono-printing and the use of IT to support practical work.

Academy gymnasts compete at prestigious season opener TEN ACADEMY gymnasts kicked off the acrobatic gymnastics season when they competed in one of the biggest invitational competitions of the year in Bristol.

The gymnasts just missed out on medal positions, with Grade 2 Women’s Pair Stacie Legrice and Mollie Thompson being placed 4th, just 0.3 away from the bronze medal position. Also close to the medals were Grade 2 Mixed Pairs Josh Jackson and his partner Charlotte Beviss (Honiton Gymnastics Club) who were also 4th, by 0.4.

Josh and Charlotte were closely followed in 5th place by Tom Arnison Denning and Mollie Thompson from the gymnastics Academy.

Other notable performers were the 11-16 women’s groups of Georgie Rule, Chloe Sneap and Katie Mailling, who were 5th, and Harriet Worden, Jess Arnison Denning and Megan Davidson, who were 7th.

The competition, hosted by King Edmund Acrobatic Gymnastics Club, is one of the most prestigious in the sport’s calendar, and features competitors from all the UK’s top clubs, plus many top performers from around the world.

It serves as an excellent introduction and preparation for Ivybridge Gymnasts who are preparing for regional preliminary competitions or the British Championships.

Erme’s Easter makeover CHILDREN AT The Erme Primary School are looking forward to a newly decorated classroom when they return after the Easter break for the summer term.

Parents and volunteers are giving up precious time in the Easter holiday to repaint and refurbish some of the older rooms. The PTA have been seeking donations of materials, tools, paint and carpet from local firms, many of which have generously donated including Lawsons, Build Center, Interline and B&Q (Plympton branch).

The school is still looking for volunteers to help with fitting the carpet which has been generously donated, and also the loan of a scaffold tower to reach the high Victorian ceilings of the building. If you can help, contact the chair of the PTA, Kay Winstone, via the school on (01752) 892247 or by email kay.winstone@sky.com.

They also need volunteers to help on 1 and 2 April, 10:30am start each day, so even if you can only spare a couple of hours they would love to see you.

ITC MEMBERS HAVE not had long to bask in the glow of success following its acclaimed panto, as they are already busy planning their summer production.

Many members are also busy with Black Ivy Mysteries murder mystery eveings. The latest was a successful 1920’s evening at the Glazebrook House Hotel, in South Brent, entitled ‘What the Butler Saw’.

Anniversary exchange THIRTY-THREE members of the town’s French twinning association are eagerly preparing for their visit to St. Pierre sur Dives this month.

Always a special occasion, this year is particularly significant as the trip marks the 40th anniversary of the first-ever exchange, so there will be significant celebrations.

Members will, as always, stay with local families – some friendships now go back to the 70s; gifts will be exchanged; tales will be told; photos and memories will be reexamined. It looks set to be a brilliant trip.

Three Tors challenge AN IVYBRIDGE-BASED charity which supports sufferers of pancreatic cancer in the South West is challenging people to take on a Three Tor trek on Dartmoor to raise money for its much-needed work.

The Operation Henry Three Tor Challenge on Sunday, 22 April, is a walking challenge which will take in Haytor, Saddle Tor and Hound Tor. Starting at 10am from Haytor car park, the challenge is being run by an experienced and qualified organiser and will finish at Ullacombe farm shop on the Haytor road.

To take part, you must register with the charity. The fee is just ÂŁ10 for adults and ÂŁ5 for youngsters aged 8 to 16 and students. All entrants will receive a certificate and refreshments at the finish.

Cadets set for trek

C

adets from Ivybridge will be embarking on a gruelling trek the length of Hadrian’s Wall this summer to raise money for a charity which supports wounded armed forces personnel.

Members of the Ivybridge detachment, Devon Army Cadet Force, will be the first British cadets to take on such a walk for the benefit of injured British forces personnel and hope to raise at least £10,000 for the Walking with the Wounded charity, whose patron is Prince Harry.

A small expedition team of 12-14 youngsters has been selected from Devon Army Cadet Force, many of whom are with the Ivybridge detachment and attend the community college, including the current Lord Lieutenants Cadet, James Mousley, who is studying for A-levels at ICC. Other members of the team come from the Plymouth area.

The team will cover the equivalent of a marathon a day, and camp

overnight, when they take on the challenge between 25-30 July.

As well as the fulfilment of a team challenge, for some members of the expedition team there will be a great sense of personal achievement too.

Josh Cavill contracted meningitis two years ago and he is determined to complete the expedition and raise a substantial amount of money for Walking with the Wounded.

The idea for the expedition was born after Gary Thomasson, leader of Ivybridge detachment, attended an inspirational evening and presentation by Captain Martin Hewitt (British Army) and Inge Solheim (Polar Guide). Gary came away convinced that such a challenge would not only be an important educational experience for those taking part but also significantly aid their personal development, both as individuals and team members.

The team is undergoing a rigorous training schedule to improve fitness, stamina and team work, with walks

of at least 40 miles over a weekend on Dartmoor and the South West Coast Path planned between now and the expedition.

“We have been blown away by the commitment shown by the cadets,” says Kirsty Cavill, an adult team member who will be supporting the team on the challenge. “They have given up their weekends for training walks, and will have to give up part of their school summer holiday as well, and approach every walk with good spirits and an impressive level of dedication.

“The aim of the challenge is to raise as much money as possible for a very worthwhile charity, so if Ivybridge residents or businesses can support these terrific youngsters in any way that would be great.”

Take BETTER PHOTOS More tips on how to improve the images you take using your digital camera from David Rayner of Ivybridge & District Camera Club

I PROMISED you a few examples illustrating creative use of the zoom facility last month, so this time we have more photos than usual, but hopefully it will inspire you to venture outside this spring and use your zoom in conjunction with some of the other tips we’ve discussed.

My photo of a newly emerged dragonfly still clinging to its exuvia has been very successful for me in competitions, helped by compositional elements such as the shape of the body curving to the wings. But it was both my position and the use of a high amount of zoom magnification that allowed me to make this image.

Using your position as well as the zoom is going to be a strong element in this month’s tips, but I shan’t expect you to lie on a scaffold plank stretched across your garden pond for several hours as I did for this photograph.

However, some other tips I used may be useful to you. Firstly, I thought about distance. The closer you get to the subject and the highest zoom you have results in even a small subject filling the frame.

However, there is a minimum distance that the lens will focus properly at and so I found this first, then moved back a little.

Next, I knew this was an opportunity of a lifetime, so wanted the best quality image and opted for natural light; a low ISO for low noise in the black background, and an f-number of 6.3 to ensure enough

depth of field for the whole insect. This meant I was only getting 1/20th second shutter speed, far too slow for a sharp image.

I couldn’t use a tripod, but I did rest my elbows on the plank, which helped, but my saving technique was two-fold and it’s a pair of tips you can use for many of your photos.

The main strategy here was to take many, many photographs in the hope that one would be snapped at the moment the insect stopped jiggling and when my hands were steady too. As I had plenty of time while the insect developed, I varied the camera settings frequently, but in the end the

best photo was this one, taken at the lowest shutter speed! Do think about taking multiple shots, varying your position and also the camera settings, particularly ISO and aperture.

The image of blackberries was taken to illustrate autumn in Ivybridge and is a quite different approach.

The image was intended for a website and so colour and impact was more important than ultimate sharpness. I took the photo with my compact camera with the ISO at 800 but using the widest zoom I had (24mm) and hand holding the camera above my head and standing on tiptoe! Using a wide zoom always gives a better depth of field but I also set the camera to f8 to help some more with this. Compact cameras will focus at surprisingly close distances when set to the wide end of the zoom and this enabled me to make the berries really stand out in the image.

Finally, I want to illustrate that zoom is useful as a compositional tool. In the photo of two boats at Port Lligat I was able to kneel down to include the foreground beach timbers.

A combination of my position on the beach and setting a matching zoom enabled me to keep the background details in focus and the foreground acceptably sharp as well. It took but a minute or two to find the right spot from which to to take this image.

It is always worth varying your settings and position, both up and down and back and forth to find a ‘different’ photo.

Pets’corner Pet health advice from Woodlands Veterinary Group

By Jane Hitchings, veterinary surgeon If you have recently bought a puppy, the hope is that it will share your life for the next 12-16 years. It therefore pays to start off with a healthy puppy and to get good advice on how to keep it that way.

Book a visit to the vet for a health check, vaccination, worming, microchipping, and to discuss feeding, exercise and neutering.

Vaccinations can start as young as eight weeks old, with a 2nd one two weeks later (and for puppies younger than 12 weeks on their 2nd vaccination, a 3rd one at 16 weeks).

The first health check is very important as it can pick up on any potential problems, eg ear mites, fleas, mange, hernias, heart murmurs, in-turned eyelids etc, which can then be treated before they become established.

It is important to socialise your puppy to prevent it becoming fearful or aggressive in later life. Your vet may host puppy parties, or will be able to direct you to some. This can be started be-

fore the vaccination course has finished if it’s taking place in a safe environment.

Worming your puppy is another essential. This should have started before you get it home, with the owner worming the bitch throughout pregnancy. The pups should also have been wormed fortnightly from two weeks old. If unsure, you should worm your puppy at the time of vaccination, and after 12 weeks old, a minimum of every three months. If you have young children or your dog regularly goes to places where young children play, you should carry on with monthly worming.

canis eggs in the environment is rising. This is the worm that can cause blindness if ingested. I advise you weigh your dog or puppy and buy a safe wormer from your vet that is effective against the dog and fox lungworm that we get in the South West.

There are as many recommendations for nutrition as there are breeders. I would advise that you feed a good quality complete life-stage diet for the first 12 months of your puppy’s life, especially if you have a large or giant breed pup. A natural raw meat and bone diet is possible and is certainly good for the teeth, but it needs research and commitment to do.

The best advice I can give you is to research breeders if you want a pedigree, and be prepared to travel to get a good one. Consider rescuing a dog, or getting a healthy crossbreed.

Do not buy a puppy you feel sorry for as you will probably be sorry you did (when you get continued ill health and behavioural problems).

Staff took on the roles from the fairy tale, and the town’s mayor Cllr Trevor Parsons joined residents to enjoy tea and cakes.

HARRIERS HIT TOP FORM ERME VALLEY HARRIER athletes excelled at the recent Plymouth Hoe 10 road race, setting several records and landing a haul of medals in the Devon County Championships, held in conjunction with the race.

Record breakers were Alison McEwing, who set a new ladies record, Ken Summers (male vet 40), Alison Thorn (female vet 35) and Jaine Swift (female vet 40).

In the county championships, there were gold medals for Summers (mens vet 60 class), Swift (ladies vet 40) and Myra McKay (ladies vet 60).

Dave Hawke (male vet 60) and Thorn (ladies vet 35) were silver medal winners, while Simon Swift (male vet 40) and Andy Trigg (male vet 45) picked up bronze medals.

In the team event, the Harriers won gold in the ladies team (McEwing, Thorn and Swift) and the ladies vet team (Thorn, Swift and Emma Lake).

The Harriers are now looking forward to putting on one of the regions popular and testing road races when the Ivybridge 10k takes place on Saturday, 12 May, which starts at Ivybridge Station car park and finishes at the rugby club.

AN IVYBRIDGE TRAMPOLINIST is celebrating a successful start to the competition season after securing qualification to the British championships for the sixth time.

Becky Jarrett, 23, will compete in the annual British Trampoline and Double Mini Trampoline Championships on 6-8 July at the National Indoor Arena, in Birmingham, thanks to a strong performance at only the second national gala of the competition season, held in Hatfield at the beginning of the year.

At Hatfield, Becky competed in the National C Double Mini Trampoline competition against a strong group of 40. She gained high enough scores to not only automatically qualify for the British Championships but also secure a promotional offer to the next grade and gained second place. Judges awarded her a final pass of 9.7’s out of 10, tantalisingly close to perfect scores.

Becky went to Stowford Primary School and is a former ICC student, and started trampolining at the age of nine at Ivybridge Leisure Centre. She works full-time for an accountancy firm in Plymouth, but still manages to do 10½ hours training and a minimum of six hours of coaching a week. She represents Plymouth Phoenix Trampoline Club, which is the only competitive club in the area.
