Matilda Tristram shows you how to discover the extraordinary in the ordinary, inviting doodlers and designers alike to experience the irresistible immediacy of drawing small. Tangles of cables, window frames, leaves and buds are just some of the objects she suggests we can learn to see in a new way by drawing them. Along the way she offers expert insights on how to simplify what we see; which pens and pencils to use; and how to introduce colour – and the end result is a creative guide you can use every single day. Matilda Tristram is an animator and illustrator. She

studied at the Royal College of Art, and now teaches at Kingston University, and leads drawing-as-therapy workshops at the School of Life. She is the author of autobiographical diary comic Probably Nothing: A Diary of Not-Your-Average Nine Months (2014).

We are sleeping less and less: statistics show that insomnia has reached pandemic proportions, and costs healthcare providers billions. Most of us spend a third of our lives asleep – our bodies insist on sleep; without it, we die. But the true reasons we sleep remain mysterious. The Science of Sleep explains the elements of the sleep state and explores the various sleep disorders and how their available treatments work. By offering an accessible account of sleep science, the book allows the reader to assess their relationship with sleep and craft their own approach to having a restful night with the maximum physical return. Wallace Mendelson MD was Professor of Psychiatry and

Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Chicago and has been engaged in sleep research for 40 years. He has been Director of the Sleep Disorder Center at the Cleveland Clinic, and the Sleep Research Laboratory at the University of Chicago. He is the recipient of various honours including an award for excellence in sleep and psychiatry from the National Sleep Foundation in 2010.

Symbols are often seen as constituting an international language and to some extent they do, but that language is far from universal – context means everything in this complicated but engrossing form of communication. Take, for example, a cross, a crane or a swastika: each one has a different and distinct significance and meaning for a Buddhist, an art historian or a student of the occult. 1000 Symbols resolves the problem by offering groupings of related symbols, every one with a neat definition of its history and its cross-cultural meanings. How to Make Coffee The science behind the bean NEW IN PAPERBACK

✤ A clear and fascinating guide

to the chemistry of coffee ✤ Comprehensively covers every

coffee-making method ✤ Invaluable handbook for

home baristas and coffee lovers

Caffeine is the most widely consumed mind-altering molecule in the world; we cannot get enough of it, and drinking good coffee is our delivery system. How is it that coffee has such a hold? It’s all in the chemistry; the molecular structure of caffeine and the flavour-making phenols and fats that can be lured out from the bean by roasting, grinding and brewing. Making good coffee depends on understanding the science: why water has to be at a certain temperature, what method works best with which grind and how roast affects taste. How to Make Coffee lays out the scientific principles for the coffee-loving non-scientist; stick to these and you will never drink an ordinary joe again. Lani Kingston is a culinary journalist and researcher, media

producer and trained chef from Melbourne, Australia, one of the world’s leading ‘coffee cities’. she has a Masters degree in Food Studies and is a trained barista who has written about coffee worldwide, and worked on awardwinning documentaries highlighting the history of coffee.

TEN TALES FROM TIBET CULTIVATING COMPASSION THINK THAT YOU HAVE BEEN IN THIS WORLD FOR A LONG TIME AND YOU HAVE GONE THROUGH MANY BIRTHS. DURING THESE CYCLES OF LIFE, AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER ALL CREATURES HAVE BEEN YOUR MOTHER, YOUR FATHER, YOUR SISTER, OR YOUR BROTHER. THUS YOU ARE RELATED TO ALL LIVING BEINGS. THEREFORE, TREAT EVERY LIVING BEING WITH RESPECT AND LOVE AS IF THEY ARE YOUR RELATIVES. NO ONE IS AN ALIEN, NO ONE IS A STRANGER, EVERYONE IS KITH AND KIN TO YOU. THINKING LIKE THIS, YOU CAN BE COMPASSIONATE TO ALL LIVING BEINGS.
