Mission Statement...

Isla Vista Trading Post’s philosophy is to show consumers that they have the power to change the way the fashion industry works by altering the way they spend their money IVTP carries this out through creating a community-based circular economy of clothes throughout Isla Vista.

Our student-run organization encourages originality and creativity to inspire conscious shopping habits, nd we hope that our efforts will make strides towards eliminating the stigma that surrounds second-hand shopping by providing a positive experience with thrifting in the community Clothing is given away for free at events in order to replace the monetary ansaction of purchasing clothing with a deeper, more permanent one (Isla Vista Trading Post) IVTP mphasizes the importance of accessibility, especially n such an expressive and personal art form-- fashion

Community members that attend IVTP events learn that the value is not so much in the clothing given away for free, “but in what they can learn, and consequently do” (Isla Vista Trading Post) IVTP hopes to empower the community to vote with their dollar by supporting sustainable industries

Three- For- Free: A Comic

WHAT WE'VE ...

IVTP has been hard at work this year! As of the end of April, we have recirculated a total of over 3300 articles of clothing for the 2022-2023 school year!!! We continue to do weekly donation pick-ups on Sundays (DM us on instagram if you have donations: @ivtradingpost) We are so proud of everything we’ve been able to accomplish and can’t wait for more events!

Our first event to kick off the year was a classic three-for-free, but with some dope music to fill the air as

students perused the pre-loved pieces At this event, we recirculated 520 clothing items while giving a stage for live DJs Then, we hosted another three-for-free this time on campus on none other than Halloween In hopes of reducing the purchasing of new clothes for costumes that people only wear once, we held this three-for-free which ended up recirculating over 560 clothing items! Fall quarter’s final event was held at Anisq'Oyo Park in IV where we recirculated 433 articles of clothing Bringing back a DJ from our first event of the quarter and the band Ping Pong Palace, we closed out the quarter with this wonderfully fun November afternoon In total, we were able to recirculate a grand total of over 1500 articles of clothing this quarter alone!

We kept the ball rolling winter quarter, with four exciting events!! In collaboration with MAPAS (Making Adventure Possible for All Students), we held a tidepooling session out at Devs After, we ventured to Dog Sh*t park to have a three-for-free Our focus for this event was to recirculate activewear to help MAPAS’ mission with making outdoor experiences accessible to all students at UCSB To start off the quarter, we were able to recirculate 182 clothing items! For Valentine’s Day, we held an event on campus centered around loving yourself and your clothes Partnering with UCSB Health and

Wellness, we were able to hold a three-for-free that recirculated 509 articles of clothing! We also had stations so people could mend and upcycling clothing they had found at the event or stuff they brought from home Stations for sewing, crocheting, air brushing, and screen printing allowed students to bring new life back to old clothes! Yet another collaborative event with Zete, although last-minute, was successful in recirculating 67 pieces of clothing from 4

BEEN UP TO

our mini three-for-free We were also able to raise $61 to support their philanthropy, OneLove, by selling upcycled clothes that we airbrushed! OneLove is a national non-profit organization that seeks to end relationship abuse and raises awareness around the topic We were so happy to help out this cause! Last, but certainly not least, we held our Fuck Fast Fashion Fest to wrap up winter quarter Four live bands joined us for this event: Lemon Generation, CardKnoll, Shark Exhibit, and Solana Along with a three-for-free, we also had local vendors selling their sustainably-made items We recirculated 445 clothing items for this event, bringing our winter quarter total to just over 1200!!! This quarter we also upcycled an old abandoned trash can into a new, cute clothing donation bin that is in the De Anza Resource Center, near Manzanita Thanks to our lovely outreach director, Meg, for this find and getting a more accessible donation method going on campus! So far, this spring quarter, we hosted an event that was in partnership with UCSB’s Queer and Trans Commission Week 2 of this quarter was pride week, which ended with Queer Prom on Friday! In hopes of making this event sustainable, we hosted this three-for-free to help people find outfits to wear to prom! In total, we recirculated almost 300 articles of clothing at this event! We also held a three-for-free at the Gauchos For Recovery: Generation Recovery Event We had a super fun time, recirculating again about 300 clothing items We are looking forward to our fashion show on May 20th to clo 2023 year This quarter, we also welcomed our new ex he upcoming 2023-2024 school year

SHEIN uses few low-impact materials and follows an unsustainable fast fashion model with quickly changing trends and styles SHEIN also utilizes child labor and unfair wages

VivienneWestwood's Legacy: withacapitalPunk

The late Vivienne Westwood was one of the most influential fashion designers in the world, known for her bold designs and her use of unusual fabrics and materials. Westwood grew up in a working-class home. She began designing in the early 70s after dropping out of Harrow Art School. She worked as a school teacher, meanwhile, she handmade and sold jewelry locally. Her second husband, Malcolm McLaren, became the manager of the Sex Pistols, and they both gained notoriety for her styling of the band’s outfits. In 1974, the couple opened their London shop, SEX, where the early members of the local punk scene would hang out. Inspired by the punk image, her provocative designs were meant to challenge the middle-class status quo Her style has evolved from the Teddy Boy subculture of the 50s to shocking punk aesthetics, to historic-inspired couture

Vivienne Westwood had an incredible influence on high fashion and celebrity culture, spanning from her beginnings in the 70s all the way up to the end of her life Most famously, the Sex Pistols' abrasive image is owed to Westwood’s custom curation Madonna, a longtime fan of Westwood, has worn her designs both on and off stage. She wore Westwood's iconic "cone bra" during her 1990 Blond Ambition Tour. Kate Moss has been Westwood's muse and has worn her clothing in tons of fashion shoots and runway shows. Naomi Campbell has also walked in many of Westwood's fashion shows over the years and has been photographed wearing her designs on the red carpet.

22

Westwood’s craft has not been praised by all. There is some disapproval of high fashion capitalizing off of underground subcultures. Punk has always been founded on anti-consumerism. Although punk has no uniform, the practice of altering already owned clothing is an important part of the subculture. Westwood arguably appropriated the scene’s DIY image and sold it at glitzy prices, such as T-shirts slashed and written on by hand and seams and labels displayed inside out Ironically, many young punks mimicked the new trends and took the Westwood aesthetic to style their own image The high fashion takes on punk and the underground youth culture pulled from each other This feedback loop continues today, present in the “punk” theme of the 2013 Met Gala

and has also received criticism for duction of her clothing, as well as ent of their workers On shopping Westwood proclaimed “Buy less Make it last Quality, not quantity g far too many clothes ” That’s all t the Westwood brand has grown individual designer Her personal or an anti-consumerist mindset is e amount of product being made wood brand every single year. It’s a line where fashion as an art form hicle for excessive consumption.

Love her or hate her, Vivienne Westwood brought punk fashion into the mainstream There is merit to the criticism of making punk into a fashion statement and drawing attention away from the core principles of punk But objectively speaking, punk would not be where it is today without her contribution. The commercialization and promotion of the punk image played a role in keeping the punk scene alive. Punk wouldn't be around today, at least not in the same way, if it weren't for Westwood’s legacy.

Final Remarks and Acknowledgements!

Speaking for everyone in IVTP, we truly appreciate any and all involvement and support from our community, and seeing as you've made it to the end of our zine, that means YOU! Our organization would not be able to function without the constant love (and clothing!) that our sustainable Isla Vista friends provide us From the very bottom of IVTP's secondhand hearts, thank you, IV!

Additionally, this zine would not exist without our ever so lovely Outreach Committee Lucky doesn't even come close to how I feel about being surrounded by such a talented and passionate group of individuals

I am so grateful for all that IVTP is and stands for and all that exists within our lovely little Isla Vista bubble.

With so much love, Meg
