The Ivors Academy Welcome
Welcome to The Ivors with Amazon Music, the biggest celebration of songwriting and screen composition.
Today we will present Ivor Novello Awards in 14 categories. The winners will join a roll call of the greatest songwriters and composers in history. In the 68th year of The Ivors, we will shine the brightest light possible on the art of songwriting and composition with live performances and a backstage Twitch livestream.
Alongside the new, many traditions remain including the fact that all of our awards are judged by songwriter and composer members of The Ivors Academy. This peer recognition makes The Ivors so special. We recognise what Artificial Intelligence can never replace – human ingenuity, inspiration and creativity.
And in this time of change it is important that the Academy continues to elevate the songwriter and composer voice. We are working to bring about global recognition of writers because their contribution is integral but often lacking in credit. We are pleased to see the international interest in the awards growing and extend a warm welcome to Board members from Songwriters of North America (SONA) and many writers and industry partners from the USA.
Alongside our celebration of the highest musical excellence, we also celebrate the work taking place to nurture future talent through our charitable Trust. This charity does important work providing access to education and opportunities to start and sustain a creative career.
We can only present the awards with the support and dedication of our Board, Senate, Awards Committee, Judges and team. We give special thanks to Amazon Music our title sponsor and PRS for Music who continue as category sponsor.
Thank you and congratulations to all the nominees and award winners.

Amazon Music Welcome
Welcome to The Ivors 2023. We are pleased to support the prestigious Ivor Novello Awards in its 68th year and amplify the inspiring work of songwriters and composers on a global scale. This is the first year that Amazon Music has been part of The Ivors, and we are delighted to work with such an iconic organisation.
Songwriters and composers craft the music and stories that set the soundscape from which culture grows. As maestros of the art of creation, they write and re-write the rules by blending ideas and influences. Their music soundtracks our lives, lifting our spirits and showing us mysterious and beautiful new worlds, or giving us comfort when times are hard. Their lyrics resonate in deeply personal, emotive, and distinct ways, providing meaning that transcends life’s limitations.
Songwriting collaboration showcases the significance of camaraderie to a craft that has adapted to shifting times and surmounted economic challenges. We hope that all songwriting beneficiaries will adopt the same level of teamwork to advance the craft, starting with the provision of well-deserved attribution.
This year, Amazon Music will amplify and scale The Ivors and offer emerging and iconic songwriters and composers an unprecedented level of attribution and visibility globally through exclusive offerings, as well as the first-ever livestream from the event, bringing them to the forefront of culture. Beyond the awards, Amazon Music – through bespoke curation and funding – will offer the emerging Rising Stars tangible opportunities to develop and hone their craft. Our support showcases a long-term commitment to elevating all generations of music creators.
Congratulations to the nominees and winners of this year’s Ivors. In celebrating your work, we encourage fans to discover who and what’s behind the music, deepening the connection between music creators and listeners. Your ingenuity, spirit, and unity are the indispensable pillars of the industry and origins of music consumption. You inspire us all to celebrate your journeys and discover the timeless craft behind the music.

PRS for Music Welcome
We are delighted to welcome you to The Ivors 2023.
PRS for Music has been a proud sponsor of The Ivors since its inception in 1956 and is pleased to continue our support of the Most Performed Work Award and Icon Award, celebrating the UK’s most influential talents.
An Ivor Novello Award is recognised around the world as a symbol of outstanding songwriting and composing talent. Therefore, it is particularly inspiring to see that over half of this year’s nominees are receiving a nomination for the very first time. The future success of our industry relies upon the next generation of music creators having the opportunity and freedom to express themselves, pushing the boundaries of what is possible, as so many before them have done.
Today’s songwriters and composers work in a world which would have been entirely unimaginable when Ivor Novello himself began writing. New technologies may fundamentally change the way in which music is created, where algorithms have the ability to write lyrics and melody. Although, as is very visible across all the works nominated today, it has always been true that music written from the heart speaks loudest.
Whatever the future holds, PRS for Music will be there to support music creators throughout their careers. Last year we collected record revenues, £964 million, and paid out £836 million in royalties, more than ever before. It is a testament to the incredible talents of PRS members, including those nominated today.
Congratulations to all of the nominees, and to the winners who will receive an Ivor Novello Award today.

TheWRD from The Ivors Academy Education
There’s always a lot to celebrate at The Ivors, but this year’s ceremony will also serve as the first birthday party for The Ivors Academy’s further education programme TheWRD.
Launched at last year’s Ivors, TheWRD offers people the chance of building a career in the music industry via a two-year diploma in Creative Entrepreneurship. And, with its combination of remote learning and field trips, plus the provision of bursaries for those ineligible for state funding and unable to pay themselves, it’s offering access to the industry for many who might otherwise miss out.
“There are people doing great work in the education space, but there are gaps,” says Ian Mack, co-founder and CEO of TheWRD. “And that’s what TheWRD is trying to do; fill those gaps and provide an alternative pathway for people that traditional education might be leaving behind.”
It does that via Mack’s magic formula of “industry leaders, expert educators and cool tech”, with the course’s partners including heavyweights such as Warner Music, Reservoir and Beggar’s Group.
Access to real industry professionals is one of the key attractions for current TheWRD students such as Andy Skinner and Hillary Juma, who have enjoyed field trips to companies such as Spotify and Milk & Honey.
“It’s called the music business, but so many people don’t think about the business, only the music,” says Skinner, a songwriter from Bangor, Northern Ireland. “There’s a whole other skillset that you don’t get on some courses. If more people come

through with that business knowledge and the work ethic they’re instilling into our crew, it can only get better.”
Aspiring London-based artist Juma praises the hands-on experience the course offers, having played her first proper gig as part of an assignment that involved putting on a concert.
“It’s really helped me to discover the vision I want for myself as an artist and the career path I want to go down,” she says.
Mack says the course, which took its first full intake in September after a pilot, has attracted a diverse range of students, with an equal gender split plus a wider age range and higher-than-average percentages of people from ethnic minority and neurodiverse students than traditional universities. The remote, part-time learning approach has attracted students from all over the United Kingdom and – notes Andy Skinner, who has a condition called spondyloarthritis – helps make learning easier for students with disabilities. And, with the music industry still struggling to achieve true diversity, Mack hopes TheWRD will help provide a crucial talent pipeline.
“By getting this diverse talent in front of the industry and making them visible, they become valuable,” he says. “We never promise that we’re going to get somebody a job, but we will get them in the room and we do that from day one.”
Mack stresses that TheWRD is “selling reality, not a dream”, but both students and teachers have big ambitions for the future.
Hillary Juma says the course has given her confidence that she can become “financially sustainable as an independent artist and grow a fanbase that will engage with my art”. As well as his own music, Andy Skinner hopes to work in events organisation and promotion, with a focus on accessibility.
Ian Mack, meanwhile, insists the sky is the limit for what TheWRD can achieve.
“We’ve got a big dream to, in the next decade, provide 10,000 people with free education,” he grins. “When I said that a few years ago, people thought I was mad. But now, [the response] is not ‘Are you crazy?’ it’s ‘Good, how can we help you?’ We’ve got people who are as mad as I am on board now!”
And, with their globally available kickstarter course launching at this year’s Ivors, it should make for one hell of a birthday party for TheWRD – with many, many more to come.
Currently, every student on TheWRD is an Ivor Novello Scholar on a funded place. The Ivors Academy Trust thanks all of TheWRD’s industry partners who have kindly donated to the scholarship fund.

Opportunity
Inside Track Opportunity
One of the great things about The Ivors is that it brings everyone together. Legendary songwriters rub shoulders with successful contemporary hitmakers and the next generation of rising stars.
And supporting those up-and-coming stars has never been more important. It’s harder than ever to break through, while the cost-of-living crisis, problems touring abroad and the volume of new music getting released mean it’s increasingly difficult for musicians to make ends meet when they’re starting out.
Enter Inside Track: an artist development programme from In The Making and The Ivors Academy, in partnership with PPL and The Ivors Academy Trust. It provides creative and career opportunities to musicians that face significant barriers accessing the industry.
Now in its second year, Inside Track sees four specially selected participants work with programme leader Cassell The BeatMaker – aka Richard Cassell – to produce two tracks, collaborate with other musicians, learn about the industry and showcase their work to music biz professionals. Exactly the sort of thing that Cassell – also a drummer, producer and Ivor-winning songwriter – wishes had been around when he was making his way in the industry.
“The Prince’s Trust gave me a grant to set up a small studio,” says Cassell. “But there was no one to mentor me on the business or how to record in a studio. I had to literally learn it all myself.”
So when young, working class musicians would approach Cassell for advice while he was on tour, he was determined to help. He drew up a business plan and, having secured funding, accepted the first four artists in 2021 after a comprehensive audition process overseen by a panel of experts (“We don’t choose on style, we choose on talent and what we can do for them,” says Cassell).
One of that initial quartet was LOZ, a punk-rapper who says he didn’t fit the traditional music school template.
“I just wanted to do music,” he says. “I’m hungry and ready to work. I had a load of
The Ivors 2023

Inside Track
songs and I love jumping around like a twat in front of the camera, so I was like, ‘Let’s go!’”
LOZ says working with Cassell helped him “talk with my own voice” but also “to feel part of something”.
“I didn’t want to be doing this by myself as a lone wolf,” he says. “I felt like part of the family and had a network of support quite quickly. It’s definitely moved my career on.”
The second intake, including drill star Crae Wolf, is hoping for a similar impact.
“Knowledge is power in this industry so I’m definitely open to learning,” says Wolf. “Without Inside Track, I wouldn’t be able to pay for the studio. As long as I work hard, it feels like anything is possible.”
Cassell introduces the IT crowd to his team of collaborators in sessions, declaring: “I try and give them as much experience of the real world as possible, and give them banging tracks in their style.”
Several Inside Trackers have already attracted industry interest and Cassell hopes the programme will become a conveyor belt of “future stars”. With applications doubling between year one and two, he’s keen to expand the programme to support more artists and even launch an international element, if additional funding can be found.
“We’ve got some amazing talent,” he says. “They just need support.”
His students, meanwhile, have no doubt about Inside Track’s value.
“When I look back at this in the future, it’ll definitely be a significant moment,” says Crae Wolf. “It’s already opened my eyes to a new experience, it’s taught me that working with other people can help you get to the next level.”
“It’s done great things for me,” adds LOZ, who has continued to work with Cassell on new music since his time on Inside Track ended. “And I’m sure it’ll do great things for more artists to come.”

Songwriters of North America Advocate
Songwriters of North America (SONA) was born in 2015 when a group of songwriter and composer friends began having conversations about their plummeting royalty payments as the music industry transitioned from physical sales to digital streams. With no union or place to easily find guidance, or even information, our small group of scrappy creators began to empower ourselves and others by asking the questions and challenging the answers.
We met the legendary rockstar attorney Dina LaPolt and together, fought our way into the buildings and boardrooms where decisions were being made. We studied hard, sought out allies, and took the fight to the doorsteps of some of the most powerful forces in the music industry; we even sued the United States Department of Justice, and won! We began to see positive shifts and as more music creators joined forces with our allies our collective voice – fighting for fair pay, equity, inclusion, and workplace safety – became impossible to ignore.
In less than a decade, SONA has grown from our original group of eight, huddling around the dining room table at the home of Shelly Peiken and Adam Gorgoni, to an international organisation on the forefront of some of music’s most important legislative rulings and issues
The Ivors 2023 Advocate 28
including; the passing and implementation of the Music Modernization Act, the creation of the Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC), Consent Decree reform, Copyright Royalty Board advocacy and currently, the drafting and introduction of the RAP Act, and leading conversations on how to protect creators in the age of Artificial Intelligence.
In 2019, we launched The Songwriter Fund, an emergency grant program to provide financial assistance to creators during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021 came the SONA Foundation, created to provide free financial literacy, mental health and career development resources to songwriters and composers.
As a rare, creator-led advocacy organisation, SONA remains focused on policy and education that puts songwriters and composers first because we know the music industry’s most valuable asset is the song.
We celebrate our partners in this mission and thank The Ivors Academy for their dedication to music and music creators and for their support of our work. We excitedly look forward as we continue to empower, educate, and advocate together.

Rising Star Award with Amazon Music
Introducing ...
A recent astronomical survey found that there has been a dramatic reduction in the number of stars visible to the naked eye over the past 10 years.
And, as with the skies at night, so with the music industry. In the modern, ultracompetitive business, it has become increasingly difficult for new creators to make themselves seen or heard.
But, thankfully, there is one place you’re still guaranteed to catch sight of some stellar creatives. The Rising Star Ivor Novello is now in its fourth year – it has already featured the likes of Holly Humberstone, Griff and Rachel Chinouriri on previous shortlists – and this year’s nominees once again feature an astounding wealth of fresh songwriting talent.
The soon-to-be-famous five will be part of Amazon Music’s global developing artist programme, Breakthrough. Breakthrough provides long-term, customised global plans for emerging artists during crucial moments in their careers. This support includes video and audio content, global marketing, increased visibility across Amazon Music playlists and programming and high-profile Amazon Original tracks available only on Amazon Music.
And, whoever ultimately takes home the Ivor on May 18th, you can bet every name on this list will be reaching for the stars soon…
Take CAT BURNS for example.
The singer-songwriter was wellnamed. The stealthy, slowburn success of her song Go – first released in 2020 but one of the biggest-selling singles of 2022, and a song with a feline-like number of lives – perfectly illustrated the emotional depths of her writing.
The Ivors 2023 Introducing
36
Burns describes her songwriting style as “honest, vulnerable and relatable”, adding: “My approach is dependent on my mood. If I see something that inspires me, I’ll write down a rough concept and then, if I’m going into a session with someone I feel safe with, I can explore that with them.”
Those songwriting skills have already won her an army of fans, including Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith, and the Ivor nomination might even have her believing in herself as much as others do.
“I often doubt my songwriting abilities,” she says. “So, having this validation from people I massively admire is amazing.”
And with ambitions to “continue to touch people with my words and make people feel seen and heard through my lyrics and songwriting”, Burns’ songwriting fire will never go out.
INES DUNN is also heading for the top. The topline writer has already made a name for herself as a fearless writer with a knack for crafting irresistible pop songs for her generation, working on Maisie Peters’ viral smash Not Another Rockstar and Mimi Webb’s global hit House On Fire.
“I’m the age of the audience I make music for,” notes Dunn. “I think about what my friends and I want to hear, and then write that. Learning the ‘rules’ and then choosing to ignore them is, in my opinion, the only way to make something that feels special.”
And the Rising Star nomination has convinced her she’s chosen the correct path.
“As someone who spends every day trying to perfect the skill of making a great pop song, I’ve always looked to The Ivors as a yellow brick road of how to do just that,” she says. “This nomination feels like a nod that I’m headed in the right direction.”
And, once she arrives, expect this topliner to be at the summit for decades to come.
The Ivors 2023 37
Rising Star Award with Amazon Music
Em Marcovecchio
TENDAI’s songwriting craft is also built to last.
“I wish to use the art that comes through me, to be of service to those around me,” says the singersongwriter. “I seek to inspire and inform my generation of the possibility – no, the responsibility of transcendent art. I’d hope to gently shift our gaze onto the path of timeless moments in art once again.”
And he’s already getting started. Raw, authentic songs such as Not Around and Time In Our Lives have inserted themselves into the fabric of people’s lives, while his brilliant work on Stormzy’s This Is What I Mean album has marked tendai out as a serious prospect.
No wonder he sees The Ivors as “a symbol of excellence” and Rising Star recognition as “a sign from God that my artistry is moving in the right direction”.
“I always go back to a quote from Joni Mitchell: ‘I am not a singer; I’m an actress’,” he says. “She understood that our responsibility as songwriters is not just to tell stories; but to be the story.”
Also displaying some serious main character energy is VENBEE. Being a spokesperson for your generation is a big ask for anyone, but Erin Doyle is already shaping up to be just that.
“I’m making songs I can dance to but simultaneously make myself and hopefully others feel something,” she says. “I want people to know they aren’t alone when they listen to my music.”
And, certainly, she’s already highly skilled in articulating the concerns of a nation, from mental health (Low Down) to addiction (her surprise Top 3 hit with Goddard, Messy In Heaven).
The Ivors 2023 38
Introducing
“The community I have been blessed to start building is beautiful,” she says. “It’s a safe space where people feel seen and heard. My songwriting has always come from a place of honesty, often using metaphors to help me get my messages across.”
Her “melodic drum and bass” anthems speak the lingua franca of youth and have already made her a TikTok sensation but you just know that, for venbee, there is so much more to come.
As there is for VICTORIA CANAL. The singersongwriter started writing aged 11 but says the Rising Star shout-out means she can “really start feeling the momentum” her career has been gathering.
And there’s certainly been no shortage of connection for her deeply personal songs. When the planet shut down, her songwriting opened up: lockdown and her grief at a close relative’s incurable illness really saw her channel the full range of emotions.
“I think of songwriting as an opportunity to say what people don’t usually feel brave enough to say,” she smiles. “When I hit on a lyric that feels scary to say out loud, I know it’s good, or at least has potential.”
An online songs series attracted mentorship from Jon Hopkins and Coldplay’s Chris Martin and, while she admits her unapologetically deep brand of songwriting can sometimes be personally “taxing”, she retains a long list of ambitions. Those range from winning a Grammy to becoming “the first limb-different artist with a platform to truly normalise disability”.
“Above all,” she adds, “What’s important is to make exactly what I want to make, and really say something with my music.”
And that’s true of all The Ivors Rising Star Class of 2023. Because, however dark the skies may get elsewhere, you can be sure this group of brilliant songwriters will always be shining bright.

Charli XCX
Charli XCX is a star, everyone knows that. In fact, most people have been convinced of that since she started releasing music aged just 14.
But what’s remarkable about Charli XCX is her stealthy rise to stardom has been achieved without ever once compromising her commitment to the cutting edge, or blunting her ability to disrupt the pop clichés.
Certainly, ever since she signed a major label deal aged 18, XCX – aka Charlotte Aitchison – has always seemed to be one step ahead of the pop pack.
You could see that in the early hits she helped write for others: Icona Pop’s I Love It and Iggy Azalea’s Fancy, songs whose titles describe them perfectly. And you can see it in the ground-breaking way her own records have helped define the sonic zeitgeist, flitting from arty electronica (Boom Clap) to zippy pop-punk (Break The Rules) to subversive protobangers (Boys, 1999).
XCX, you see, follows her own muse. Looking at a list of artists she has collaborated with – from Odd Future to Marina And The Diamonds, Gwen Stefani, Mura Masa, Christine And The Queens, Caroline Polachek and many, many more – is like watching the recent history of visionary pop flash past your eyes.
That’s meant she’s been able to do innovative things like deliver the first lockdown album (2020’s How I’m Feeling Now), while also working on huge hits for both herself (Hot In It) and others (Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello’s Senorita).
But, ultimately, whether her projects dominate the charts or are aimed at a more underground audience, they always influence everyone else who is serious about the business of making pop music.
Not for nothing has her latest album, 2022’s highly acclaimed Crash, been her most successful. It’s Charli XCX’s world, and the rest of us are just lucky we get to live in it.

Debbie Harry & Chris Stein
Blondie, as the badges used to remind us, is a band.
But much of the vision for that band – one of the greatest of all time, lest we forget – came from the unique songwriting partnership between Debbie Harry and Chris Stein.
Harry and Stein met and fell in love on New York’s punk rock underground, but would go on to write some of the most glorious pop music ever heard. Those songs would rule the charts on both sides of the Atlantic and prove particularly popular in Britain, which became almost a second home for the band.
The pair know their way around melody like no one else of their era, but part of their songs’ enduring charm is their ability to absorb contemporary influences without ever losing their own infallible sensibilities.
So, from the spiky punk attitude of Rip Her To Shreds to the breezy pop charm of Dreaming, or from the bubbling electronica of Heart Of Glass to the hip-hopinfluenced Rapture (the first ever song with a rap to hit Number One in the US, would you believe?), Blondie have always shaped the way pop music sounds.
And they’re still doing it now. While their individual achievements are legion, there remains something very special about the Stein-Harry axis that has influenced generation after generation of musicians.
No wonder that, since reforming in the late ‘90s, Blondie have enjoyed one of the most successful reunions of all time – in both artistic and commercial terms. And, while the Harry-Stein romantic partnership was dissolved decades ago, their songwriting alliance remains gloriously intact, as evidenced by the brilliant Doom Or Destiny (featuring Joan Jett) and Love Level (featuring John Roberts) from the most recent Blondie album, 2017’s Pollinator.
So, against the odds, Blondie is still a band. But with Debbie Harry and Chris Stein at its heart, it’s also so much more.

Songwriter of the Year with Amazon Music And the
Nominees are ...
Since the shortlist for the Ivor Novello Award for Songwriter Of The Year was reintroduced two years ago, the annual nominations have become a key indicator of the health of great British songwriting.
And in 2023, the list – with the nominated writers selected by an Ivors Academy jury and voted on by Professional tier Academy members – reveals that British music is thriving across all styles and genres.
Choosing just one winner from such an eclectic raft of nominees will be a far from easy task for those voters, given that each and every one of the candidates would be a more than worthy winner.
But whoever ultimately walks away with the prize, The Ivors crowd will be able to celebrate a year when British music really found its range.
Look at CENTRAL CEE for example. The man who rapped “I’m living a movie, but it ain’t scripted” on his Retail Therapy a big screen blockbuster.
Having started the year with the Top 40 hit, Daily Duppy, he went on to chart no fewer than 11 songs on the UK Top 100 during 2022, a remarkable achievement usually beyond even the most established artists and writers.
His collaboration with fellow nominee YOUNG CHENCS has proved to
The Ivors 2023
be one of the UK’s most successful writing partnerships of recent years and, certainly, the hits and acclaim just kept on coming in 2022.
Central Cee emerged as a new, authentic UK hip-hop superstar. And, whatever happens at the ceremony, you can expect his script to keep evolving – all the way from Shepherd’s Bush to Hollywood.
Coming from a rather different place is FLORENCE WELCH. Few artists are still hitting new heights when they get to their fifth album, but Florence + The Machine – the brainchild of singer and songwriter Welch – continue to astound and amaze, 14 years after the release of their debut album.
Indeed, Dance Fever became perhaps the most critically acclaimed of Welch’s albums, and also one of her most successful. It debuted at Number One on the UK Albums Chart – the fourth of her records to do so – and featured in the year’s Top 100 best-sellers.
But beyond the commercial success, Dance Fever is an artistic triumph and Welch remains one of the few modern artists capable of sustaining such an immersive, expansive experience over the long term.
And that’s why it’s clear that, even after all the achievements, Florence + The Machine are just getting started.

Meanwhile, pop phenomenon HARRY STYLES has come a long way fast. The incredible global success enjoyed by One Direction would represent a high-water mark in 99.9% of careers, but Styles’ remarkable solo success has put even that megastardom, relatively speaking, in the shade.
The stats behind Styles’ third album, Harry’s House, speak for themselves. The lead single from the record, As It Was, was written with fellow nominee KID HARPOON – aka Thomas Hull, co-writer of all but one of the album’s tracks – as well as Tyler Johnson, and debuted at Number One on both sides of the Atlantic, staying there for 10 weeks in the UK and a scarcely believable 15 weeks in the US.
Styles dominated the entire chart year, finishing 2022 with the UK’s biggest single and biggest album. But there is much more to this hitmaking duo than mere numbers. Far from being a short-term, hit-focused operation, Harpoon and Styles have built a long-term relationship across three albums, forming an unbreakable bond and an uncanny understanding in a fitting tribute to the old school way of working.
Proof that this is one natural pop phenomenon that is here to stay.
Meanwhile, alternative British music has also been having a significant moment.
Look at The 1975 who, appropriately enough for a band named after a year, had an exceptional 12 months. Driven by principal songwriters, drummer GEORGE DANIEL and frontman MATTY HEALY, they have long been one of the most provocative and innovative groups around. But in 2022, The 1975 enjoyed a true annus mirabilis.
Their fifth album, Being Funny In A Foreign Language, peaked at Number One in the UK – maintaining their 100% record of topping the chart with studio albums – and also became a huge hit around the world.
But they also mastered the art of extending the record’s lifetime, as the songs they’d crafted so skilfully in Electric Lady and Real World studios inserted themselves into the pop culture mindset in a way few bands have been able to manage in the modern, easy-come, easy-go musical environment.
The Ivors 2023 66
In all, the band spun six singles from the album, which became one of the UK’s Top 100 bestsellers of last year, while The 1975’s masterful live shows continue to beguile everyone who sees them.
So, 2022 was a very good trip around the sun for The 1975. But their songs have many, many more good years ahead of them.
As do Wet Leg. Anyone who has visited the Isle Of Wight on holiday will know that the short ferry ride across the Solent constitutes a form of virtual time travel, transporting you back to the great British seaside’s gloriously unspoilt past.
And the island’s most famous new music act is also something of a throwback to a golden age. The global success of the band – led by singer-guitarists and songwriters RHIAN TEASDALE and HESTER CHAMBERS – has evoked memories of when the UK’s sparky indie-rock bands ruled the world. And it has also shown the duo to be consummate songwriters, effortlessly conjuring up anthems to compete with anything the more commercial world has to offer.
As you might expect from a band from one of Britain’s sunniest holiday locations, for Wet Leg, right now, songwriting life really is a beach.
As it is for all of The Ivors’ fab five contenders. Only one of them can walk away with the title Songwriter Of The Year. But whoever it may be, you can be sure the UK’s reputation for producing an astounding array of distinctive talent will have been further enhanced.
Variety, after all is the spice of life.

Kamille
Kamille’s songwriting career started with a bang, and has carried on with a seemingly bottomless supply of bangers.
Ever since she burst onto the scene in 2012 by co-writing a Number One single, The Saturdays’ What About Us, the artist formerly known as Camille Purcell has had her fingerprints all over British pop music’s finest moments.
So, it’s fitting that Kamille – shortlisted for Songwriter Of The Year at the 2021 Ivors – should go one better this year and pick up this award. Because her collection of songs has become one of the truly outstanding catalogues of the 21st century.
In the decade since her breakout, she has helped the likes of Jessie J, JLS, Ella Henderson and Olly Murs maximise their potential, while also working on some of pop’s landmark records, including Dua Lipa’s bonafide classic Future Nostalgia album.
And some of Kamille’s songwriting relationships have gone deep: her work with Little Mix helped turned The X Factor winners into a global pop phenomenon with songs across their career such as Black Magic, Power, Shout Out To My Ex and Think About Us. And her association with Mabel has helped catapult the singer to superstardom on the back of irresistible hits such as Mad Love, Boyfriend and Don’t Call Me Up.
Certainly, the Top 40 would be a much duller place without Kamille’s presence. A consummate collaborator, she is one of the very few hitmakers to have co-written back-to-back chart-toppers in the form of Jess Glynne’s I’ll Be There and Clean Bandit featuring Demi Lovato’s Solo.
Add in her own burgeoning solo career, her willingness to mentor up-and-coming writers and artists, her own label and publishing company and her importance as a music industry voice, and you know there are plenty more big bangs and even bigger bangers to come.

PRS for Music Icon Award
Tim Booth, Saul Davies, Jim Glennie, Larry Gott & Mark Hunter
James’ 1991 breakthrough single may have implored us all to Sit Down – advice that audiences from the Hacienda dancefloor to the Glastonbury leylines have delightedly followed ever since. But, when it comes to songwriting excellence, this beloved Manchester band has never been afraid to stand up and be counted.
One of the most enduring and successful UK bands of their – or, indeed, any other – generation, James may have started out making sparse, literate indie-pop on their 1986 debut album, Stutter. But the brilliance of their core songwriting team –frontman Tim Booth, fellow co-founder and bassist Jim Glennie, keyboard player Mark Hunter, violinist Saul Davies and former guitarist Larry Gott – has seen them successfully try their hand at everything from rave-influenced euphoria (1990’s Gold Mother) to arena-friendly rock anthems (1997’s Whiplash) to spliced-up electronica (2021’s All The Colours Of You).
But whatever they sound like, James’ maverick spirit is always retained, meaning that – almost uniquely for a band with a 40-year history – they remain strangers to the nostalgia circuit, instead constantly merrily pushing at the margins of their musical world.
That’s why, over the years, they’ve come up with songs as distinct as 1985’s Hymn From A Village, 1989’s Come Home, 1997’s She’s A Star and 2021’s Wherever It Takes Us, but rendered them all utterly irresistible. That’s why Tim Booth’s enigmatic, intelligent lyrics will always demand devotion and provoke contemplation. And that’s why ground-breaking producers from Brian Eno to Flood to Jacknife Lee queue up to work with a band whose open-minded approach to writing and recording is legendary.
And that’s why, when the members of this most treasured band step onto the stage at this year’s Ivors in acknowledgement of the outstanding contribution their songs have made to British music, everyone will ignore their 1991 exhortations. And give them a standing ovation.

Academy Fellowship Sting
The Ivors Academy fellowship is reserved for the best of the best, the songwriters and composers whose impact on the art and craft of music creation is utterly indelible. But even by those sky-high standards, Sting’s career achievements are something else.
The man that no one calls Gordon Sumner began his career, of course, with The Police, one of the most popular and important bands of the ‘70s and ‘80s. Sting’s songwriting was at the core of their success, crafting classics such as Roxanne, Invisible Sun and Every Breath You Take, the latter recently hailed as the Most Performed Song of all time within BMI’s 14 million-strong catalogue.
That would have been enough for one lifetime for most people. But Sting has also gone on to enjoy one of the most wide-ranging and fruitful solo careers of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Over the years, he has collaborated with everyone from Shaggy to Mary J Blige and Melody Gardot to Eric Clapton. He has made albums of neo-classical lute music (2006’s Songs From The Labyrinth) and gentle winter sounds (2009’s If On A Winter’s Night…), alongside superlative pop-rock records, from 1985’s The Dream Of The Blue Turtles to 2021’s The Bridge. And he has sold 100 million albums while picking up awards the way Glastonbury’s clean-up crew picks up litter.
He won six Grammys with The Police and 11 elsewhere in his career. He’s been nominated for four Oscars, been inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and been made a CBE for his services to music.
The Ivor Novello Awards, meanwhile, retain a very special place in his heart, having picked up the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002 and winning an additional six gongs over the years.
Throughout all that, Sting remains the most open-minded ambassador for songwriting, forever open to cover versions, samples and interpolations of his storied catalogue.
And so this year The Ivors celebrate Sting: the best of the best looking to inspire the best of the next generation.
