CENTRO DE LA COMUNIDAD DE PUERTO LOBOS Centro de la Comunidad de Puerto Lobos is a place designed for the community’s needs, a place that brings people together in the heart of Puerto Lobos, Mexico. The building’s shape, orientation, and access to light focuses the idea of unity and gathering. A place where health and community is the main priority. The building program consists of an outpatient clinic, a public market, a plaza, and a chapel. Puerto Lobos is a place bathed in light and surrounded by water on a peninsula formed by the elements. Puerto Lobos, Sonora, Mexico, is a small town of 215 inhabitants, and most of its economy comes from fishing and seasonal tourism. Puerto Lobos Community Center (Centro de la Comunidad de Puerto Lobos) is a place for people to gather as a whole, heal their bodies, and unite as a community.

The project is organized around a central courtyard with the program deployed along its perimeter, taking advantage of the natural breeze and views across Puerto Lobos and out into the Gulf of California. Sunlight illuminates and guides guests through the space by employing lighting strategies along the path. During the day, the public spaces are illuminated by daylight manifestations such as reflection, refraction, and direct sunlight. The natural world is a asset as it provides light, air movement, and water in abundance. The central courtyard functions as water collection a focuser of light. The courtyard creates a microclimate which tempers the warm summer conditions. It is well-documented that access to nature and natural light help patients heal faster, improving their health, and minimizing the need for future clinic visits.

S T O N E Agricultural Farms (carrizo invades the land)

Plaster or calcium sulfate is found in numerous mines around Mexico.

Most constructions in Puerto Lobos have Plaster finish applied.

Carrizo grows fast on the agricultural farms around Puerto Lobos. It becomes invasive and affects the production of crops.

Found at Cierro Prieto, a mountain located north of the site. Due to the shift of the tectonic plates, different types of rocks start to emerge.

Light is the primary medium through which we acquire information. It’s the link to humanity and a universal language. Light creates shadows, and it’s born from it. Light is everywhere and is everything. Where would we be without it? The eye and the brain perceive information nonstop.

How we move, how we understand a space, who we are, everything ties back to light. Light is the source of life, and we can perceive it in multiple ways. Through its saturation, hue, and value, luminosity, and intensity, light makes itself known. When entering a space, we try to understand and connect with it.

The wind blows with a direction to the North East. The dust in the air and the gloomy sky screamed their presence. The White Sands are constantly shifting, constantly changing, because that is their nature. Through their movement, the site will choose what entry to reveal and what experience to embody. The White Sands determines where and how you will encounter the project and how you will endure it.

I I step into the stairs without an end. They lead to nothing, and they lead to everything; they continue into infinity. I feel my body needs responses, and I sense my surroundings. My presence on the stairs is dominant. I am fully aware of every movement I make and every breath I take.

II As I make myself through, I stare deep into my reflection. I don’t fully recognize myself thus I only look at an abstraction of my features. By the presence of the land, its ancestors reveal themselves to me, I am the product of all who came before me.

When everything became dark and silent, I found my inner tune. I travel down, and the white sands disappear from my gaze. I make my way to the dimness of the light. And light is the only source that guides the way.

CCI Collaborative Center for Innovation is a project located South of the Catalina Mountains. The project is connected to the city by a streetcar that travels 7.7 miles, creating a continuous bond within the city starting at the Mercado San Agustin and making a final stop at the agricultural fields. During its path, the streetcar makes a stop at the CCI, located South of the cancer center, and North of an apartment complex. The building design, conformed by two main courtyards, encourages people to reroute from their daily routines, make time for themselves, and experience the space. The primary Northern yard slopes down to the project creating a sense of entry and motivating people to access it. The Southern yard, surrounded by stairs, invites the neighbors living in the apartment complex to inhabit the space and form of the CCI community.

The CCI, more than a center for innovation, is a center for connection. It’s a place where people can visit to catch a breathe and take a break. The project provides “breathable” spaces that allow the user to be in contact with nature, have a moment to forget about their worries, and live in the moment. These spaces contrast the building’s surroundings being a busy street in a desert city.

Design for integration appears in the project in multiple ways. The project design allows nature to form part of it. It achieves this by incorporating environmental strategies like collecting solar energy by the solar panels working as a roof for the meditation space, collecting rainwater for passive cooling and irrigation from the breathable spaces and the ponds, and adding windows 8’ above each floor for natural ventilation.

CHANGE

Everything is constantly changing. Every day comes with change. Change starts when the user gets inside of the streetcar at the Mercado to start their journey. This project changes too.

During summer days, the polycarbonate building’s envelope can be manipulated to adjust to the user’s needs. Plants inside the building also provide change. While time goes by, the plants will grow becoming a more prominent part of the building.

The Northern courtyard slopes down into the building creating a sense of entry inviting the patients from the cancer center and the people from the community to access it. The Southern courtyard, surrounded by stairs, invites the neighbors from the apartment complex and the people walking up from Campbell. The streetcar makes a stop in the building to allow EVERYONE to be part of the experience. The experience starts South of Tucson at the Mercado traveling through Downtown into the Innovation Garden.

RESOURCES

The design of the building starts getting larger after the first floor to have a smaller impact on the project ground. The polycarbonate panels that are easy to replace if needed, protect the building from heat and sunlight and helps the materials to perdure longer. Polycarbonate allows natural lighting into the building with an outstanding 25-year life expectancy. It’s an effective resistance to weather and low heat transmission.

ECOSYSTEM

Tucson annual wind paths were the main factor for the design of the shape of the building. The project’s location, closer to the busy street, functions as a buffer to protect wildlife. At the North-East part of the project is the Innovation Garden’s site.

The Innovation Garden is a place that promotes wildlife to form part of it, and the project makes an emphasis on it. There is a small garden on the North East corner that allows wildlife to live without being disturbed.

ECONOMY

The primary goal of the building is to sustain itself.

The goal is to function mostly from passive stand active systems like overnight passive cooling, natural ventilation, solar energy generation, and rainwater collection. The building’s envelope covers all of it. The envelope prevents it from gaining a lot amount of heat gain lowering the amount of mechanical system use. The operable facades promote a similar approach by allowing wind to flow through and lowers the amount of air conditioning use.

WATE R

The Northern courtyard, that slopes down, functions to collect rainwater. At the end of the slope, there are metal grill covers to drain the water and store them in water tanks. That water will be filtered and used for irrigation. On the top floor of the building, some water ponds will also collect rainwater. The water collected from these ponds will be used for passive cooling and for the fountain in the breathable spaces that will cool down the air coming from natural ventilation.

WELL-BEING

Taking a deep breath helps to decrease tension and release stress, and being in contact with nature employs the same effect. Biophilia plays a big part in the project. Biophilia design helps to improve the well being of the user. Biophilia helps to increase the occupant’s productivity and creativity by transmitting southing and calming energy.

ENERGY

A polycarbonated envelope covers the building preventing it from gaining a lot amount of heat.

The building’s envelope can be manipulated for the benefit of the user’s comfort. The operable panels allow natural ventilation and sunlight to access the building to benefit its performance.

The roof for the meditation space, constructed by solar panels, collect solar energy to increment the building’s function.

DISCOVERY

During the design process of this project, there were some steps and strategies taken to define its character. In Tucson, 29.2% of the total building energy can be lowered by Two-Stage Evaporative Cooling and 25.1% Sun Shading of Windows.

The water ponds help with the passive evaporative cooling and the polycarbonate envelope with sun shading.

SLOPED & SUNKEN COURTYARDS Both courtyards function as water collectors. The north courtyard slopes down into the building collecting water at the end of the slope and to create an entry effect. The primary intention of the design of the garden is for people to lay, sit, gather, take a break, give a class, and intake the site.

The streetcar begins where Tucson began. The first stop location is south of Tucson, next to Mercado San Agustin. It travels through downtown and stopped at the University of Arizona. The streetcar gave you somewhat the whole ‘Tucson’ experience, but now it reaches deeper within the city. The University of Arizona agricultural fields, located close to the Rillito River, granted the opportunity for the experience to increase. Now the streetcar travels from el Mercado to the fields riding through the innovation garden.

BREATHABLE SPACES Biophilia plays a big part in the project. Biophilia design helps to improve the well being of the user. It increases the occupants productivity, creativity, well being by transmittin southing and calming energy.

LIBRARY In the library, there is a large open space connecting the exterior terrace to the library. People can look it looking through other parts of the project.

MEDITATION SPACE The meditation space has four main ponds that form one big pond, functioning as water collectors. These ponds also provide a sense of serenity for the users to feel calm by motivating them to relax and form part of the space by intaking their surroundings.

LA COMUNIDAD The main purpose of the design is to gather people at the heart of the building. To create unity within the residents of the project, and the people that surround it, people that are in contact with it. The main idea is to encourage people to socialize and maintain a close relationship with each other. A space that encourages people to inhabit it. This idea is approached by the quality of light that goes from outside and through the project.

Nature is another important aspect because the main gathering areas will have regional vegetation. The other reason is that in the south part of the project there is a buffer from the neighbors located at the South of the project. This is a special place in the project because it creates a special bond between the people. The project carefully deploys some openings.

The project is composed of three volumes which at first sight it looks like it’s very massive, but when one starts to walk through it, it starts opening to the spectator. Its screen is porous which grants air and sunlight to go through the project so that it can breathe. The project opens up in the same form that a person opens up to start a conversation with a stranger.

This goes back to creating a community, a space where everyone knows each other because they either have known each other for a while back or by knowing them from five minutes ago.

EN CONTACTO The project is all about creating a community within nature through a two-pronged approach.

One, the public spaces provide common gathering areas and encourage a sense of community among the three different type of users--researchers who stay for extended periods, short-stay student “campers” and the staff who run the facility. Two, the main public areas are spatially open and frame significant distant views out from the site, while the private dwelling units provide opportunities to retreat from the active, public spaces. Nature plays an essential part in the project. The project carefully deploys openings to enjoy the views surrounding the site and create unique indoor/out-door experiences. The project is elevated to provided enhanced access to the scenery. Massing within the project subdivides to provided framed view corridors for the users as they descend through the site.

Site circulation at the perimeter of the project bleeds out onto the sloping ground providing a more immediate experience of nature and allowing the users to access the site.
