Ivanhoe

Grammar School continues to be a thriving community of young people of character. This term, several exciting initiatives continued to develop alongside some wonderful achievements including:

• Winning the Greenway Cup

• Premierships in Girls Swimming, Girls Volleyball and Basketball, and our Boys First XVIII winning the AGSV championship for the first time in 60 years!

Character Education

We have continued our journey developing new standards in global and character education. This year, the School received an honourable mention by Character.org and our Cadet Unit has been recognised for exemplifying several of the principles of character by the same organisation. These achievements will be officially recognised in Washington in November and are key steps as we make our way towards becoming the first Australian school to be formerly accredited as a School of Character. In November, we will launch our ground-breaking Global Education program which aims to set a new benchmark for incorporating global citizenship education into the School curriculum. Additionally, Ivanhoe Edge, a comprehensive co-curricular program offering coaching and development for Ivanhoe students, will be launched in Term Four.

Strategic Plan: Towards 2030

Throughout 2023, the management team and Board of Governors have spent energy and critical thought on the development of our next Strategic Plan.

From its inception, Ivanhoe Grammar School has been built around the key principle of developing young people of character. Supporting these principles, the new Strategic Plan continues our commitment to develop young people to have:

• Moral Character – respect, honesty, compassion, gratitude, kindness, and ethics

• Civic Character – understanding our responsibility to others, citizenship, volunteering and social justice.

• Performance Character – giving of one’s best in all endeavours, perseverance, focused, hardworking and diligent.

Key features of the plan include:

• Being a futures-focused school where we not only prepare students for the present but also for the future to impact and shape the world they enter after graduation.

• Our ‘Four Campuses, One School’ philosophy to ensure consistency in offerings, programs, and practice.

• Digital transformation to enhance and optimise learning by integrating technology into all we do.

• Investing in our staff as we firmly believe a key determinant of quality learning is quality teachers. To this end, we will introduce:

– A new career structure for highly accomplished staff who wish to remain in the classroom and provide on-going coaching and support to their colleagues.

– The formation of the Ivanhoe Institute, which will lead the continuous improvement of teacher capabilities through the high-quality professional learning program.

Life Governor of the School

Nigel Kendall, a much-respected and revered long-serving staff member, Deputy Principal and Life Governor of the School, passed away in June. As a faithful servant of the School, colleague, teacher, and mentor, he will be sadly missed by all that knew him. We honour Nigel’s contribution to Ivanhoe Grammar School in the following pages.

The entire Ivanhoe community was deeply saddened to learn of the recent passing of Nigel Kendall. Nigel was a much-respected member of our School community, a revered long serving staff member, Deputy Principal and Life Governor of the School.

Nigel attended Caulfield Grammar School from 1946-1955. After leaving school, he completed a commerce degree and Diploma of Education while also playing cricket with University Cricket Club, and football with the Old Caulfield Grammarians.

contract to teach at Ivanhoe Grammar School. He was given a permanent position the following year and his involvement with the School was to last for nearly 60 years, despite an earlier plan to return to his alma mater at some stage. Throughout his time at Ivanhoe, he was a passionate and loyal Ivanarian who left an indelible mark on the School. Nigel was gentle but strong, respected by students, staff, parents, alumni and members of other AGSV schools. He was passionate about sport, particularly the Melbourne Football Club, and the role it played in building the character of young people. It was perhaps fitting that he was watching his beloved Demons when he was taken ill.

After retiring in 2005, Nigel became Patron of the Cadet Unit, regularly visiting both the annual Cadet Camp and Bivouac. A willing and active attendee at alumni reunions, generations of past students held Nigel in the greatest esteem and always spoke of him with great warmth and affection. Family members and colleagues paid tribute to Nigel at a celebration service of his life held at Buckley Hall at Ridgeway Campus in June. Led by School Chaplain Canon John Sanderson and starting with ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ from the musical Carousel, daughter Nicole, grandchildren Rhiannon and Caitlyn St John, and Paige Lyall, friend and colleague Ian Mason, Executive Officer OIGA Geoff Brown (’62) and Principal Gerard Foley provided warm and amusing eulogies.

When a teaching position with the Victorian Education Department fell through, Nigel accepted a one-year

Nigel was appointed Secretary of the AGSV in 1972, a position he held for the next 18 years. He was subsequently Chair of the AGSV Sportsmasters Committee from 1997 to 2006. In his profile on Nigel in his book ‘The Associated Grammar Schools of Victoria: A Sporting and Social History (2008), Dennis Carrol comments that: “With an abiding enthusiasm for school sport and a meticulous approach to detail, Nigel was perfectly suited to the role of Secretary.”

A rousing cover version of ‘The Last Farewell’ by the Marine Band of HMS Ark Royal, just before the aircraft carrier was decommissioned in December 1978, was complimented by a photographic tribute. Nigel leaves behind wife Annette, daughters Nicole, Suzette, Peta, Angela, and 13 grandchildren.

As a faithful servant of the School, colleague, teacher and friend, he will be sadly missed by all that knew him.

KINGS BIRTHDAY HONOURS

In the Kings Birthday Honours 2023, three members of the School community received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) . The OAM is a highly prestigious honour bestowed by the Governor General to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service or achievement in various fields. We are delighted to briefly highlight their achievements below.

John Dermer (’67)

‘For service to the creative arts, particularly as a ceramicist.’

John (pictured above left) has been a full-time potter and ceramicist for over 50 years and has been described as one of Australia’s great living potters.

John attended the School from 1962-66 before completing his diploma in Art and Design in 1970 at RMIT. He recalled making his first pots when he studied Art under Dennis Dwyer (staff member 1953-78) in Year 11 in 1966!

In 1971-72, John travelled extensively overseas and worked as artist in residence at Wedgwood in the UK. After returning to Australia, he established Kirby’s Flat Pottery in picturesque Yackandandah in 1974 from where he still works today.

In 1988, John was commissioned to make a group of ceramics for the new Parliament House in Canberra, principally the Cabinet Room in the Prime Minister’s suite. His work can also be found in the Federal High Court building, Powerhouse Museum Sydney, Westerwald Museum Germany, Wedgwood Museum England, Buten Museum of Wedgewood, Pennsylvania,

as well as national, state and regional galleries throughout Australia together with many important private collections. He is only one of three potters to have his work exhibited at the National Gallery of Victoria.

Two important sources of inspiration in John’s life are his passion for the Australian outback and photography. John endeavours to travel to different areas of the Australian desert each year which recharge his creative battery, nurture his love of photography and inspire his pottery whilst reinforcing his focus on traditional values.

John credits his wife Shirley for the wonderful support she has given him throughout his career, and he holds a major exhibition on the last weekend of November each year at his studio gallery in Yackandandah. John is a member of the School’s Gallery of Achievement.

John Ellis (’64)

‘For service to the oenology industry.’

Note: Oenology is the study of wine and winemaking. It is different from Viticulture which is the science of the growing, cultivation, and harvesting of grapes.

John (pictured above right) is the founder and CEO of Hanging Rock Winery in the Macedon Ranges. This award acknowledges John’s remarkable contribution and influence on the Australian wine industry, which has significantly contributed to Australia’s global reputation as a leading wine producer.

John undertook all his secondary schooling at Ivanhoe Grammar School from 1959-64. He was a member of the athletics team and received School Colours in hockey, while his final year exams, not surprisingly, resulted in Second Class Honours in Chemistry. Clearly an indicator of the career to follow!

John originally studied veterinary science before being sidetracked into viticulture. He graduated from Roseworthy College in South Australia as Dux of his class, before starting his career in the Barossa Valley, going on to become the first Winemaker at Rosemount Estate and later Tisdall Wines, eventually starting Hanging Rock Winery with wife Ann in 1983. He is regarded as one of the contemporary pioneers of the Macedon Ranges and Heathcote wine growing regions.

8 THE BROWN AND WHITE ALUMNI HONOURED

With an illustrious career spanning over 50 years, John has been a key contributor in shaping Australian winemaking. From being arguably the first person in Australia to make a Merlot, Cabernet Merlot, cool climate Chardonnay and Fumé Blanc, to his years on numerous industry boards, committees and wine show judging, John has done it all.

In 2014, looking for new challenges, John commenced cattle breeding, focusing on the Speckle Parks breed from Canada. So successful has it been that the Hanging Rock Speckle Park Stud and Beef, based squarely on the beef’s exceptional taste and tenderness, is sold with the sort of tasting notes previously reserved for wine.

Married to Ann with four children, two of whom - Ruth and Robert - work at the winery, John has noted that without the help of his family, particular Ann, none of his countless achievements would have been possible.

John is an active Ridgeway Club member and when health permits, attends reunion luncheons and has been a generous financial supporter to the school for many years.

The Very Reverend Dr Stuart Edward Blackler

‘For service to the Anglican Church of Australia.’

Stuart Blackler was an important and popular member of the academic staff at Ivanhoe Grammar School from 19581966.

He was appointed as a Resident Master to teach English and History, and joined the School at a time when many of its longest-standing and most respected

names were teaching, including Victor Brown, Jack Benson, Ken Wright, Dick Dooley, Nigel Kendall, Rob Slater, Alan Graham, Doug Hennessy, Bill Lyon, Ted Blashki amongst others, all of whom mentored him during this time.

Stuart made significant contributions to the School as Housemaster in charge of the boarders and oversaw the considerable task of moving the boarding house from Sherwood to the newly converted Locksley in 1964. He also played a considerable role in many dramatic productions including a special tribute to William Shakespeare in 1964 on the 400th anniversary of the playwright’s birth.

In 1963, he became Senior English Master and was appointed as examiner for public examinations of the University of Melbourne.

He left the School in 1967 to take up an appointment as curate of Christ Church, South Yarra and part-time chaplain at

Melbourne Girls Grammar School where he served with distinction and with great respect from students, staff and parents. In 1993, he was appointed as the Anglican Dean of Hobart at St David’s Cathedral where he remained until 2005. Returning to Victoria, he served in many roles in the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne at Richmond, Preston, Thornbury, Essendon, Murrumbeena and Mt Waverley.

Stuart recalls that so much of his time at the School as ‘wonderfully happy and rewarding’, with an Ivanhoe spirit and a true sense of community. He remains close to former School colleagues and celebrated the award with several alumni at a recent luncheon. The photo above shows Stuart (sitting) with (L-R) John Duncan (’60), Geoff Brown (’62) and Renn Wortley (’63)

Stuart lives a quiet but fulfilling life with his wife, Dr Deane Blackler, in inner city Melbourne.

The School also wishes to acknowledge Dr Pam Gower who was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for Significant service in the General Division for ‘Significant service to dentistry and to forensic odontology.’ Dr Gower is a registered specialist forensic odontologist with the Dental Board of Australia, and a long standing Visiting Dental Officer (Westmead Hospital) working in the NSW Dental Identification Unit. Dr Gower is the wife of former School Captain Michael Wonder (’78)

THE CHAIRMAN’S LAWN

The Chairman’s Lawn is outside the Administration Offices opposite the Wilcox Building, and remains something of a mystery to most Ivanhoe Grammar School students. Not that it is out of bounds to anyone but given its elevation, proximity to Ivanhoe House and access only via a set of external steps, it is not the place where many students tend to visit.

This is a pity as it is a symbolic place of memory for several items of significance to the School and alumni.

A glance at this small piece of Ivanhoe Grammar School turf and what is stored there is certainly worthwhile remembering:

Ross Allen Plaque

Ross Allen (’56) was a Prefect and a member of the First XV111 for which he won School Colours.

In 1958 he joined the Australian Government as a patrol officer and was posted to Papua New Guinea (PNG) where he rose, at the age of 35, to the rank of Assistant District Commissioner. Ross resolved conflicts between the highland tribes and helped native people clear areas by hand for the construction of roads and bridges.

Above all, Ross was an adventurer. He navigated and chartered many rivers in PNG by kayak and climbed most major

mountain ranges in the world including Mount Kilimanjaro. He surf skied 360km around the coast of PNG and the Bismarck Sea, and circumnavigated two thirds of the world in his yacht ‘Arika’.

In 1998 Ross was lost at sea off the coast of South America. He was sailing from the Galapagos Islands to the Marquesas, a distance of some 3,000 miles. No radio contact was heard for four months and his yacht was found floating abandoned in the Pacific Ocean. It was presumed he had been killed by pirates.

In 2004, his schoolmate and friend Michael Roth (’57) organised a farewell service for Ross at the School Chapel, and for a memorial plaque to be placed in the Chairman’s Lawn as a tribute to Ross’s memory and as a final resting place.

Following the service, Michael took 30 guests, including Ross’s widow Noelene, family members, fellow alumni and past staff, to dinner to toast and share memories of an extraordinary person.

Roll of Honour 1939-1945

This plaque is one of the most sombre tributes to The Fallen; those alumni who lost their lives on active duty during the Second World War. It sets out the 65 names of those who fought and paid the supreme sacrifice on lands far away from home.

The tragedy is not just the loss of life. Many were very young men; others had wives, some had families – or a child on the way - but all of them had a deep sense of service, loyalty and duty.

The casualty rate and loss of so many past students took a great personal toll on Reverend Sydney Buckley, and was instrumental in the construction of the Memorial Junior School – now Buckley House, which opened in 1955.

The Naval Cannon

The Indonesian naval cannon replaces a similar piece which was mounted for many years on the top pillar of the steps leading to the Ivanhoe House veranda. It was given to the School by the father of Courtney Beilby (’27), a boarder from Malaya. The gun had been found on the sea floor in the Malacca Straits. It stood there from 1921-1965 but disappeared in mysterious circumstances, never to be seen again. Rumours have circulated the School for decades regarding its fate but there has been no confirmed sighting or resolution regarding its actual fate.

The replacement cannon was placed in 1987 at which time it marked the naming of that area as the Chairman’s Lawn.

Staff Supported Scholarship Drinks

HATCHED & MATCHED

Congratulations to all our alumni below who have celebrated important personal announcements.

Engagements! Weddings!

If you have an addition to your family and would like a free OIGA bib for your new arrival, please contact our Alumni Coordinator via email at Mirella.Busso-Lee@ivanhoe.com.au

In 2016, Principal Gerard Foley created a unique scholarship which is funded entirely by Ivanhoe Grammar School staff members, both past and present. The Staff Supported Scholarship affords a student the opportunity for an Ivanhoe education that would not otherwise be possible.

The program is currently funding its third student. During Term 3, drinks for staff members (below) were held in the Boardroom at School House to hear from Gerard about how well both the program, and the Year 11 student, are progressing. It is certainly hoped that this initiative can expand in the years ahead.

Our Australian Goanna!

In a first for the School, Josh Philip (’20) was selected to represent Australia at the 2023 World Flying Disc Federation Under-24 (WU24) Ultimate Championships in Nottingham, UK. Josh is the first alumni selected for Australia in this sport and is one of the mainstays of the Australian Goannas team.

WU24 is a non-contact, co-ed team sport played with a flying disc (frisbee!) which combine elements of netball and touch football into a fast paced, athletic sport. It is self-refereed and is played in over 30 countries with a strong presence in universities and high schools. Ultimate is recognised by the Australian Sports Commission and most recently by the International Olympic Committee. WU24 featured 45 teams from 22 countries and 1,150 athletes.

Josh is highly regarded for his commitment to the sport and to becoming the best thrower possible. Away from the field, he is a gifted long-distance runner and is studying Biomedicine at Melbourne University.

Influencer on the Rise

Dylan Buckley (’11) has been chosen by a panel of experts from The Age as one of The Top 50 Influencers within the AFL landscape, people who they believe will shape the game over the next decade. Named as No. 43 on this list, Dylan has quickly become one of the league’s new media stars. His podcast ‘Dyl and Friends’ is considered essential listening and offers a previously unavailable perspective on footy, other sports and popular culture.

From Advertising to Art

After 25 years in advertising, Matt Jukes (’93) is now making his mark as a fulltime contemporary artist. Following completion of his Bachelor of Design at RMIT in 1996, Matt headed to London to study Printmaking at Morely College. Over the next two decades, he became a recognised Digital Creative Director working across both the public and private sectors, specialising in youth, fashion, lifestyle, and entertainment brands.

He orchestrated campaigns for many blue chip and boutique clients including Coca-Cola, Nike, Walt Disney Motion Pictures, Lee Jeans and Xbox, and led, built and inspired numerous creative teams.

However, from his early days in London, he has been hugely influenced by Mark Rothko, an American painter closely associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement of modern art. Seeking a new direction, Matt is now focusing on creating abstract monoprints of forgotten landscapes and misremembered places through the exploration of colour and texture. His work can be found in Claridge’s Hotel London, aboard Saga Cruise ships and in the homes of numerous private collectors across the globe.

Matt’s work has appeared in selected solo and group exhibitions, and at selected residencies from Melbourne to Los Angeles.

While his work is a far cry from his former life, Matt keeps in contact with his former school friends via social media and is hoping to attend the next London reunion.

Ruby now Home

It seems her star is continuing to shine! Ruby Maishman (‘15) has recently joined the cast of the long running Australian soap opera Home and Away, playing the role of Kate Vella. Set in the fictional NSW town of Summer Bay, H&A has been running since 1988. Ruby has appeared in theatre, film and now television, and last year came back to Plenty Campus with ‘The Players - Bell Shakespeare’, a touring ensemble bringing Shakespeare to schools across Australia. Ruby has also recently been appearing in Romeo and Juliet with Bell Shakespeare in Sydney.

Poster Girl is now 21!

She probably didn’t know that the poster used to promote Plenty Campus when she was in Primary School would make an appearance at her 21st birthday party. Caitlin Daly (’20) was one of two students photographed for the banner which appeared on Bridge Inn Road back in the early 2010’s. Her grandfather Wayne Dunstan purchased it following its use-by date and proudly re-hung it at her birthday bash. Caitlin is studying for a Bachelor of Nursing at La Trobe University.

Still Collecting Former North

Melbourne Football Club

President and Buckley Boy Lloyd

Holyoak (‘50) still lives very much by his maxim of ‘if you rest, you rust!’ Lloyd, who turned 90 in February this year, has led a full and active life, and has been running his antiquarian bookshop Abracardabra Roycroft in Kew for over 30 years. His passion for books, collectibles, postcards and history is palpable, and Lloyd is always ready to tell a story about his time at Ivanhoe Grammar School.

Hanging Up her goggles

Katelyn Borg (’18), one of Ivanhoe Grammar School’s most successful swimming coaches, is taking her studies in high performance athletes to a new level. During her time as Head Swimming Coach, Katelyn has led the combined team to consecutive wins in the AGSV Swimming Championships and left a positive impact on the team with her enthusiasm, inspiration and encouragement.

Katelyn attended Plenty Campus for six years, after which she undertook a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science at La Trobe University. While studying, she gained practical experience with internships at Melbourne Rebels and other sporting clubs, and also founded her own online health and fitness coaching business, KTX Health & Fitness.

Her passion for the connectivity of science, health and physical activity has been evident throughout her time as a student and coach, and Katelyn leaves to continue her Masters of Clinical Exercise Physiology degree at Charles Sturt University in Brisbane.

Home Coming

Leisl Bruhn, Dean of International Students, was delighted to receive a surprise visit in July from Alex Fan (’19). Dux of VCE that year, the School was Alex’s first port of call after graduating from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Science (Honours). Alex is shortly to commence a Master of Business Analytics at Melbourne Business School after he returns to Australia from a visit home to China.

Livin’ the Dream!

Adriano Del Monte (’06), an international football television presenter based in Milan, returned to Australia during July and August to cover the FIFA Women’s World Cup for Optus Sport. Adriano is an international sports presenter and currently working for seven networks across five continents. He also works as an event host for FIFA and UEFA.

Water Polo Champs!

The Old Ivanhoe Grammarians Girls Water Polo team have won the Water Polo Victoria 2023 Autumn State League WSL-3 Championships. Boasting a 100% unbeaten season, the girls continued their successful summer season where they were runners-up for the title. Amelie Wake (’21) was the leading goal scorer in the competition while Lauren Chan (’07) was voted Most Valuable Player.

Alumni & Year 12 Careers Expo

Deciding on career and/or study options at the end of secondary school is never easy. Year 12 students were treated to an Alumni Careers Forum during Term 2 which provided an excellent opportunity to gain a meaningful understanding of potential career pathways and university courses available at the end of their schooling.

The School is very appreciative of the following alumni for their input and advice regarding their study choices, what it involved and the career opportunities that arose.

Jemima Adams (’20), Grace Cue (’12), Sarah Foley (’16), Heath Gilham (’13), Kerry Kang (’18), Charlotte Rendell (Kerr) (‘10), Zoe Konstantopoulos (’21), Lisa Malone (’00), Callum Matheson (’12), Georgia Matheson (’12), Haleena Nguyen (’20), Mia Papachristos (’21), Georgia Pentifallo (’08), Bella Reed (’19)

These forums have previously proved to be most valuable to Year 12 students as they approach graduation and will continue to be a feature on the School calendar in future years.

Congratulations to Kyle Langford (‘14) who was selected in the AFL All-Australian squad of 44 players. While Kyle didn’t make it into the team, he had his best year with Essendon and kicked a career high 51 goals this season.

Back 2 Back Basketball Premiers!

The Girls’ Firsts Basketball team completed their undefeated season beating Caulfield Grammar School by 14 points. Led brilliantly by captain Liv Perillo, the team created history on the court named in the late Nigel Kendall’s honour. It was amazing to see the Ivanhoe Army out in force, supporting and cheering the girls on, making it a truly memorable day. This team has now won back-to-back premierships and won the 2023 Premiership outright, an incredible achievement and a testament to the strength and skill of the players.

AGSV Football Champions!

It has been a long time coming but the School First XV111 celebrated a sensational win in the Grand Final of the AGSV Football Premiership, their first title since 1963.

After defeating Assumption at Kilmore the week before with a goal in the dying seconds, the team had to travel again to play the final at Yarra Valley’s home ground. In an even contest throughout, the Ivanhoe boys were able to seal the victory by eight points on the back of their elite pressure and work rate. The final score was 7.13.55 to 7.5.47.

Current Essendon AFL players and alumni Kyle Langford (’14) and Nik Cox (’19) attended the team’s training during the week and sent the boys good luck messages before the match, while fellow students, staff and family members provided magnificent support throughout the game. After a brilliant effort from the entire team and support staff, Captain Charlie Naish accepted the shield in what is the first ASGV Football premiership for the School in 60 years. What a day to remember!

Singapore and UK Cricket Tour

While the rest of us could only dream of flying to watch and play cricket in the UK this winter, a very excited party of 16 students and three staff embarked on a 24-day cricket tour of the Singapore and UK for a cricket tour of a lifetime.

Four days in Singapore including a game in Malaysia was followed by 11 games over the next 20 days in the UK. From Edinburgh to London, the team played as they travelled, winning nine games and consistently playing competitive cricket in some of the most picturesque cricket grounds in the world. The tour finished on a great note with attendance on the third day of Australia’s Ashes victory at Lords.

The tour was an outstanding success both in terms of the development of their own cricket skills but also for the cultural knowledge and appreciation by the entire touring party.

14 THE BROWN AND WHITE AROUND THE SCHOOL

Cambodia Service Project 2023

Students and staff were delighted to return to Cambodia during the mid-year school holidays to resume the Cambodia Service Project. As with many other extra-curricular activities, this program was suspended from 2020-2022 as a result of the global pandemic.

The Cambodia Service Project has a proud twenty-year history, providing a unique cultural and service-learning opportunity for both students and staff. Since 2007, the School has worked with local aid and community organisations to complete school building projects and fundraising initiatives in Phnom Penh and the Peak Sneng village in the Siem Reap region. Prior to the 2023 trip, students raised over $73,000 to help fund different projects at schools including

community buildings, computer classrooms and playgrounds.

The 15-day 2023 Cambodia Service Project commenced in mid-June with 112 students and 18 staff. During their time, students were able to see firsthand how their fundraising was used to renovate both classrooms and new boarding accommodation. They also taught English to Cambodian children at Neak Krawan Primary School, had a cultural dance experience at the National Arts Academy, visited the S21 Genocide Museum, the Royal Palace, Killing Fields and local markets.

The 2023 trip was regarded as a huge success, with both students and staff being immersed in the local culture and embracing all the activities and experiences.

Greenway Cup Success - Again!

The 2023 Greenway Cup Debate between Ivanhoe Grammar School and Ivanhoe Girls Grammar School was fought and won in August for the second consecutive year by our School! This prestigious debating competition has existed for over 90 years and first began in 1932.

Taking the affirmative in the topic ‘That Monarchies Should Be Abolished’, our three debaters and two researchers had just one hour to

Volleyball Star

Congratulations to Year 9 student

Ashton Home who was selected in the Australian Under 16 Volleyball Team which competed for Australia at the Asian Championships in July in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Not only was it a huge achievement for Ashton but also a major milestone for the Ivanhoe Volleyball Program with Ashton being our first ever male player to make a Junior National team and the 3rd ever Ivanhoe student to play for Australian junior teams.

Ashton’s ascent through the ranks in the past year has been remarkable as he was actually selected for the National Team before even making a State team! Ashton was talent spotted at the Gold Coast National Schools tournament last December and was invited to national Junior training camps where he performed well enough to get picked to make the team for Uzbekistan. Ashton’s aspirations include playing for Australia at the Olympics and hopefully making a career out of volleyball. He is certainly on the right track at this stage.

examine, dissect and prepare their compelling arguments. Students from both sides argued their case with passion and conviction in front of a full theatre, but in the end, the judges awarded the cup to Ivanhoe Grammar School.

Congratulations to the debating team of Tansy Elliott, Zahra Winther and Isabel Smith, and researchers Ella Vertigan and Dante Cincotta as researchers. Ivanhoe Grammar School now leads the competition by two victories.

Sports and Aquatic Centre Naming Rooms

VALE FIDELIS USQUE AD MORTEM

We acknowledge the passing of the following individuals who were part of the Ivanhoe Grammar School family.

When the School’s magnificent Sports and Aquatic Centre was opened in June 2022, it was hoped that every aspect of the complex would be finished for the ceremony.

While the names of those people after whom various facilities within the SAAC had been confirmed, it took a little longer than expected for the actual signage to be completed. However it was a day to remember when, in recognition of their long and dedicated service to the School, the signage for the Naming Rooms was finally unveiled to the entire School community.

Coinciding with the 2023 Fidelis Society Luncheon in May at School House, attendees were able to see the signage

in the Sports and Aquatic Centre in place for the first time. The School was delighted that members (and families) of this esteemed group were able to witness their names on the respective facilities as follows:

• John Knorr (’52); the FINA accredited Olympic-sized hydro floor swimming pool

• Nigel Kendall (ex-staff member and Deputy Principal); the Show Court Number 1

• Brenda Lyon (wife of Bill Lyon); the gallery at the entrance foyer to the centre, pictured above with Geoff Brown (‘62)

Photos of these three people who have indelible links to the School are above.

His connection with the School commenced in 1965 in Year 7 and he completed his HSC with the Class of 1970. John was a member of the Athletics and Hockey teams, and following school, studied Physical Chemistry at the University of Melbourne.

He returned to Ivanhoe Grammar School in 1986 as a Senior Years Science teacher, specialising in Chemistry. In 1990, he moved to Plenty Campus as a foundation staff member and contributed enormously to the development of the campus in those early days.

From being a Form tutor to coaching sport (in particular hockey), coordinating the campus sport programs and later the work experience program, John was always involved in the wider life of the School.

The entire Ivanhoe Grammar School community was shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of John Pollard (’70) following a tragic hiking accident in far north Queensland in July.

Dedicated, meticulous, passionate and thoroughly professional, John was a teacher who always had his students’ best interests at heart and tried to instil in them the same passion that he had for chemistry. His devotion to his subject was evident by the number of extra classes he ran for his students after school.

After 30 years teaching (and an association of some 45 years), his distinguished contribution to the School ended when he retired in 2015. Over that time, John earned the total respect of his students and fellow staff, and both before and following his retirement, attended numerous gatherings of his past students, as well as his own 10, 20, 40-year classmate reunions.

The School extends its sympathies to John’s wife Karen, children David, Robert, Stephen and Claire, and John’s brother Roger Pollard (’73), himself a former student and past long standing staff member.
