Sarah Ann Findley was born in 1825 to David and Jennet Findley in Charlestown, Indiana. At the age of thirteen, she endured the loss of her father. While her family prepared to migrate to the Oregon Territory, Sarah met William James McCaw, whose family were close friends of the Findleys. In 1844, they married in Henderson County, Illinois, and soon after welcomed their first child in 1845, who tragically lived only a few months. Meanwhile, Sarah's brothers and other family members joined the Abner Hackleman wagon train, heading west in pursuit of a new life in Oregon.
The McCaws were determined to follow, especially after hearing glowing reports from Sarah’s brothers about the opportunities in Oregon. William, a skilled wagon maker, was already crafting the wagons for their journey, including a special one for Sarah’s mother, Jane, designed for comfort and rest along the way. While preparing for the trek, Sarah learned she was expecting their second child. In 1847, they embarked on their journey westward with other families, including the Careys and Smiths. Near Grand Island, Nebraska, Sarah gave birth to her daughter, Mary Jane, in the middle of a fierce thunderstorm. Despite the harsh conditions, both mother and child survived, with Mary Jane riding safely in her grandmother’s custom wagon.
Upon reaching Oregon, Sarah and William built a homestead in Linn County, where they raised a growing family, welcoming several more children. Over the years, they lived in various communities like Crawfordsville and Peoria. After William's death in 1896, Sarah moved to Eastern Washington to be closer to her children. She passed away in Prescott, Washington, in 1899 and was laid to rest in the IOOF Cemetery in Waitsburg. Sarah's legacy endures as a testament to her resilience and determination as a pioneer and mother on the American frontier.
