Welcome to the OCS! Whether you are a new student at IUPUI, or an experienced Jaguar, The Office of Community Service (OCS) is likely your best resource to getting involved in the IMPACT that makes our school great! The OCS is more than an office; it’s a student-empowered movement to rally the campus around worthy causes, to offer students valuable volunteering opportunities, to engage the Indianapolis community, and to unite education and service. We challenge you to make the most of your time in school by exploring the opportunities we offer. Check us out and get involved! Don’t forget to get connected to the OCS through our many resources. The OCS is here for you to ensure that your community service and volunteering endeavors are fun, beneficial, educational, and meaningful. November 11th and 12th Help change our community one meal at a time! Second Helpings relies on more than 600 regular volunteers to fight hunger in our community. Volunteers help prepare and deliver the meals to our recipient agencies and lend their expertise to office operations. Volunteers will be working as Kitchen Assistants, preparing food based on instructions of kitchen staff members, and help with kitchen cleaning, sanitation and maintaining food safety. There are two opportunities to serve! th Wednesday, November 11 11:30am-4pm – get a free lunch and tour of Second Helpings. th Thursday, November 12 4pm-8pm – Dinner provided

Midwest Food Bank th Thursday, November 19 , 12-4pm Help to bridge the gap between prosperity and poverty in our community! Be a part of distributing over 30,000 cases of food donations from nationwide corporations to social service organizations of Indianapolis, as well as, national disaster sites. Volunteers are needed for lifting, repackaging, loading, organizing. You will even receive a FREE lunch! Also, check out the Midwest food bank website for more information. Faith, Hope, and Love: Food Pantry Saturday, November 21st - 10am-2pm Be a part of serving your community at a local food pantry! Help organize, assist clients, and serve soup! Students will be organizing and setting up food at the beginning of the food pantry, helping people register, assisting participants in receiving food, engaging the participants in conversation, serving soup, and helping clean up. To be held at Wheeler-Dowe Boys & Girls Club 2310 East 30th St. Indianapolis, 46218. For more information about getting involved with Jags in the Streets, please contact Suzanne Graham Return to top Habitat for Humanity Always a meaningful experience, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity is an easy way to make a big difference. Look below at all the unique ways you can get involved. You are always needed at one of Habitat for Humanity’s “Build Sites.” Habitat volunteer build days are divided into 2 shifts: st st -1 shift 7:30-11:30AM (Lunch provided for 1 shift volunteers) nd -2 shift 12:30-4:30PM

Upcoming Build Dates: Friday, November 6TH – 1ST AND 2ND shifts th ND Saturday, November 7 – 2 shift TH Thursday, November 12 – 1ST AND 2ND shifts TH ST ND Friday, November 13 – 1 AND 2 shifts TH ST Thursday, November 19 – 1 AND 2ND shifts The Habitat RESTORE Open to the public, the ReStore resells and recycles donated building materials and home goods. Proceeds from the sales help us build more homes for deserving families in Indianapolis! (Located at 1011 E. 22nd ST.) Restore Volunteer Opportunities: Truck Volunteer Volunteers are needed to ride alongside a staff member on our Habitat ReStore truck on pre-planned routes and donation pick-ups. Donations may be residential or commercial and are typically cabinets, appliances or building materials. The ReStore truck departs from Habitat at 9AM and returns to Habitat 2PM Monday-Saturday.


Donation In-processing Volunteer Volunteers can help with light warehouse work. This would include processing, sorting, transporting, pricing, and displaying donated goods from our back room to the sales floor. This may also entail light housekeeping or other assigned store duties. Sales Floor Volunteer Volunteers can even help keep our sales floor operational. This would include helping to unload donations, assisting customers with the loading process, organizing the store, house-keeping, and customer service. Volunteers would be retail support. Habitat ReStore volunteer days are divided into 2 shifts for the Donation In-Processing Volunteers and the Sales Floor Volunteers. Shifts are flexible. Tuesday-Friday st 1 shift 10:00AM-2:00PM 2nd shift 2:00PM-6:00PM Saturday 9:00AM-2:00PM Other Habitat Opportunities Include: Become a P.A.L.! (Mentor a family) We have wonderful partner families here at Habitat who could truly benefit from having a family mentor (P.A.L.) to help them as they walk through their journey with Habitat! Please contact Jenny Coffey for more information! Help in the front office! Habitat always needs folks who would like to help man our phones and welcome guests. This is available to you Monday through Friday between the hours of 9am-4pm. Bring lunch out to the build site! Help us say “thank you” to our great build site volunteers by providing lunch! This is a great opportunity if you’d like to be a part of the build site fun without swinging a hammer! Welcome volunteers at the build site! Each build season, Habitat loves to have hospitality volunteers help them welcome and sign-in build site volunteers. This volunteer opportunity usually lasts only 30 minute to 1 hour. Whether it be for one day, or for an entire build (14 days spread out over 6 weeks), they would love to have your help on site! Help on projects and fundraisers in the office! You can always help with office work such as preparing sponsorship packets, helping with our mailers, and computer work! Work along-side construction staff as a construction assistant! Want to learn about the construction industry? Habitat can give you hands on experience working one-on-one with a Construction Superintendent out on the job site and at the office. Return to top WFYI Whether you are looking for a one-time or ongoing service opportunity, WFYI is a great place to volunteer! You are sure to gain valuable experience at WFYI and engage your community, all while benefiting this local non-profit. Here are some ways you can get involved at WFYI: WFYI Spirited Chase Saturday, November 7th 7:45 - 11am - Volunteers will assist with registration and hosting breakfast


9:30 am - 12:30 pm - Volunteers needed to assist at six different locations around the city. 9:30 am - 12:30 pm - Phone volunteers needed at WFYI to assist participants with directions, etc. 12:30 - 3:30 pm - Phone volunteers needed at WFYI to assist participants with directions, etc. 2:30 - 5pm - Volunteers will assist with Wrap Up Party at WFYI Data Entry Volunteers Volunteers are needed to assist with data entry in several departments of WFYI. Return to top Faith, Hope, and Love International (FHL) The vision of Faith, Hope and Love International., Inc., (FHL) is to build communities of faith, hope and love around the world and the Indianapolis community. This is done by encouraging the active participation of churches, ministries, businesses, government, and educational institutions to serve people unconditionally in a joint effort to bridge the social, economic and spiritual gaps in the community. FHL always has something going on! Upcoming opportunities include: Stop the violence – November 7th (12:30-4pm) Help stop the violence while bonding with families in an open gym. Located at 9425 30th St, North Eastwood Church. th Service Learning - November 7 (1-4pm) Volunteers are needed for teaching English to adults and babysitting. Spanish is not a requirement. Food Pantry - November 28 Help distribute food to those that need at the Boys & Girls Club. You can also get in touch through Facebook and the newly updated website. Return to top Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week November 15-21 One week prior to Thanksgiving, schools, communities and cities throughout the nation endeavor to bring a greater awareness to the issues of hunger and homelessness. This year, IUPUI is working together to create meaningful and educational opportunities with organizations such as the Coalition for Homelessness Intervention and Prevention (CHIP). This program is coordinated jointly by the Office of Community Relations and the Office of Community Service. Jam the Bus Sunday, November 15 - Saturday, November 21 Help jam an IUPUI bus full with non-perishable food items to be donated to 19 local organizations. Look for marked boxes around the IUPUI campus to place items. Service Fair Monday, November 16


11am - 1pm Campus Center, room CE148 (next to Barnes and Noble) Come get information on organizations helping the hungry and homeless and ways you can get involved. Brown Bag Book Club Tuesday, November 17, 11:30 am - 1pm University Library, room UL2115J (main floor) Join in on a discussion about The Glass Castle and hear a formerly homeless advocate share their story. Brown Bag Luncheon Panel Wednesday, November 18, 12-1:30pm Democracy Plaza (under the business/SPEA breezeway) This will be a panel discussion with local homeless providers and formerly homeless advocates. Movie Night Thursday, November 19, 6:30pm - 8:30pm University Library, Lilly Auditorium View and discuss the award winning documentary Lost in Woonsocket. Additional information can be found here. *At every event we will be collecting blankets, coats, gloves, hats, scarves, and socks to donate towards Winter Contingency, an effort between the community’s outreach teams to keep people on the streets alive during the winter months. Film Screening and Discussion: Homeless to Harvard-The Liz Murray Story Tuesday, November 17, 2009, 12pm-2pm, Lilly Auditorium At 15, Liz Murray finds herself living on the streets after her mentally ill, drug-addicted parents falter in their attempts to keep their family together. Instead of crumbling, the troubled teen clings to hope and determination, and works her way up and out of homelessness-all the way to Harvard University. This three-time Emmy nominated film is based on an incredible true story. SPEA faculty member, Laura Littlepage, will lead a discussion following the film. Pizza and drinks will be provided. Sponsored by the IUPUI Honors College and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Sock Drive for the Homeless th November 16-25 The sock drive is an annual event sponsored by the IUPUI Honors Club and Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma Freshman Honor Societies to collect socks for the homeless in Indianapolis. Drop off your new socks at one of the collection boxes around campus. Drop Box Locations: Taylor Hall (3rd floor, Honors Program Lounge) School of Science Building (1st floor, student lobby) nd University Library (2 floor) Business/SPEA Building (3rd floor) st Campus Center (1 floor, Information Desk) Cavanaugh Hall (1st floor) Return to top Indiana Guard Reserve Mission: The Indiana Guard Reserve is a voluntary organization established by Indiana Code to supplement the Indiana National Guard and reports to the Governor and Adjutant General of the State of Indiana to support and augment the Indiana National Guard in family assistance programs, special event management, emergency management and other programs.


Volunteer opportunity: You can serve community and state by supporting Indiana National Guards family assistance programs, special event management, emergency management and other programs. Return to top Legacy House Compassionate individuals are invited to volunteer for a successful and growing service agency assisting children, women, and men who are victims of violence. Legacy House is a non-profit community resource dedicated to providing a variety of free support services to all victims of violence. Located in the basement of the North Arlington Health Center, 2505 N. Arlington, Legacy House is seeking caring volunteers willing to fulfill a broad scope of support services. Help in needed in childcare (while parents attend groups or counseling), clerical work (answering phones), special events (community affairs/booths), fundraising, and as host families for the foster pet program (provide temporary homes for pets of domestic abuse victims while they secure stable housing). Volunteers are also needed to assist with a client self-sufficiency program that covers important areas like budgeting, car maintenance, nutrition planning, housing searches, tutoring, and mentoring. Potential volunteers must have a commitment to helping others, be at least 18 years of age, undergo a background check, complete a personal interview, and participate in mandatory training. Return to top Imani Workshops/ IU-Kenya Program There is an exciting new opportunity for students to get involved with an international effort! Imani workshops is a revenue-generating social enterprise focused on producing high quality crafts by HIV+ artisans in western Kenya. Due to the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS, many patients have a hard time securing a job or accessing credit for a business loan. Imani Workshops and The Family Preservation Initiative give these people a second chance at getting their life back on track, while at the same time, promoting economic self-sufficiency. 100% of the income earned through sales is reinvested in the Workshop through which artisans benefit from employment, skills training, and other forms of empowerment. The Mission: Imani Workshops is a branch of the family preservation initiative under the IU-Kenya program; a medical partnership between the Indiana University School of Medicine and Moi University School of Medicine. Imani's mission is to provide avenues for poor and vulnerable members of the community to achieve economic security by increasing their skills, knowledge, and productivity.


This volunteer opportunity is two-fold: 1. Volunteers are needed for office help, which includes taking inventory of products, packaging/ unpackaging, organizing the room, and pricing products. 2. Students can help with sales at events. Imani Workshops frequently receives invitations to sell their products at various events, churches, or other religious organizations. The Ronald McDonald House (RMH) provides a supportive home-away-from-home for families of seriously ill or injured children receiving medical care at Riley Hospital and other Indianapolis hospitals. Decorate Saturday, December 5th, 9am-12pm th Help decorate both locations for the holidays on Saturday, December 5 from 9 am to 12 noon. Below are the details.

Pull into the circular drive at 435 Limestone Street to pick up a parking pass and get directions to the parking lot. Pike Township Kiwanis will be serving breakfast. At this point, volunteers need to be at least 18 years of age due to the H1N1 flu restrictions RMH is currently working under. This may change by December 5th, so if this involves you, contact Operations Director Dennis Craig (317-269-2247) as we get closer to the date to see if this restriction has been lifted. De-decorate nd Saturday, January 2 , 9am -12pm Contact Mary Friend to help clean up the House and get it looking great after the holidays. Holiday Open House th Thursday, December 10 , 10am-7pm If you like to bake, RMH could use your help by baking cookies for the Holiday Open House. Houseguests will have the opportunity to fill tins with their own selection of goodies and the rest will be used as refreshments for the Open House. Cookies need to be delivered to the Limestone location on December 8th or 9th and clearly marked “For Open House”. If you plan on bringing some cookies, please contact Special Events Manager Pam Anderson so she can plan accordingly (317-269-2247 x 227). Santa’s Workshop December 22-24, 12noon to 6pm Houseguests will have an opportunity to select gifts for their family members who are staying here at the House. Mission: The Boys & Girls Clubs of Indianapolis believes that every young person deserves to live a life filled with hope and opportunity. Because of a care for our young people, the Clubs provide a safe, educational and positive atmosphere where they can prosper and reach their full potential. They are in need of volunteers to serve as lane assistants. These assistants will ensure each bowler bowls under his/her name as it appears at the bottom of the screen, encourage good sportsmanship, watch pin fall/scoring for errors, and stay with athletes until awards ceremony.
