An overview about hot and cold rolled stainless steel
People often get confused about hot and cold rolled stainless steel and their properties. If you too are one of them, you’re reading the right post. In this post we’ll tell you the differences between these two types of metal and their uses.
Hot rolled stainless steel This type of stainless steel is manufactured using a high temperature that is above the steel’s recrystallization temperature. In this process, the steel can be formed very easily into different shapes and also can be made in larger sizes. Compared to the cold rolled stainless steel coils or other materials, the hot rolled are available at low prices because reheating in this process is not required.
The products in this process are manufactured by heating and on cooling it slightly shrinks, thereby losing control on the shape and size of the finished products.
Uses Products manufactured using the heating process like the hot rolled steel coils and bars are used in construction and welding industry. These hot rolled products are perfect for industries where precise shapes are not necessary.
Cold rolled stainless steel The hot rolled stainless steel that are further processed by cooling the material which is again followed by temper rolling are called cold rolled steel. This method can be used to produce precision stainless steel strips wide a range of surface finishes. The steel produced using this method has a number of benefits and some of the important benefits of using this method are:
Cold drawing- this helps in making the product strong, increasing the tensile strength and eliminating the need for thermal treatments. Turning- this helps in getting rid of imperfect surfaces as in case of hot rolled process. Grinding- it helps in narrowing the tolerance range of the original size. Polishing- it improves the finishing of the surface.
