Dynamic Partnership IU medical students find the IU East/Reid Hospital partnership an ideal location for their clerkships.

Ashley Suah came to Richmond this fall with aspirations of completing her medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine and preserving the dream of one of her former classmates.

While Suah, who is from Orlando, Fla., completed her three-week clinical rotation in pediatrics as part of a partnership between the IU School of Medicine, Indiana University East and Reid Hospital & Health Care Services, she was also sharing the story of her late classmate Annique Wilson-Weekes, who died recently from a rare form of gastric cancer.

“She was only given five months to live when she was diagnosed,” Suah said.

“She was just really brilliant. Before medical school, she did eight years of oncology research.”

Suah said Wilson-Weekes, who was a mother to two boys, would have become a great physician.

“When she was diagnosed, that was a pretty hard hit (to the class),” she said.

“The few of us who were really close to her, we wanted to do something in her honor. We decided, as medical students, that one of the best ways we could begin our tribute to her was to start a scholarship.”

As part of the fundraising efforts, Suah had her head shaved and kept it that way upon arriving in Richmond this October.

“Every time someone asks me about my haircut, I’m able to share about Annique and spread awareness,” Suah said. “It’s actually crazy how many of us deal with cancer every day. I don’t think there’s anyone who hasn’t known someone who has been diagnosed. For me, especially someone who is learning about becoming a doctor, it’s just another way that I can relate to my patients and let them know that we are all going through the same things,” she said.

Suah said her time in Richmond was unique from her experiences in the big-city hospitals of Indianapolis.

“There is a lot of continuity here in this office,” Suah said.

“I get to work with the same physicians every day, so if I had a question about something the day before I can have my questions answered. We can look at the patients together.

“Everyone is very friendly, even when going to the grocery store, the cafeteria,” she said. “I really like that. I like the small town-experience also.”

Suah is one of the dozens of students this fall benefiting from the new and more dynamic partnership between the three institutions, which was formalized in June 2011. The partnership offers students pursuing a medical degree the opportunity to complete a number of clinical rotations required of third- and fourth-year medical students.

Pamela Lamb, director of medical education at IU East, said her experiences have been common among visiting students.

“Students are now referring each other as they return to let peers know of their outstanding experience here, causing others to request to be sent here,” Lamb said.

Nearly 30 IU medical students are slotted for the 2012-13 school year – almost double last year’s total –from various locations across the state, with each staying for several weeks to a couple months depending on the clerkship, Lamb said. Each experience is coordinated with assistance from a growing number of local, volunteering physicians. Those physicians, in turn, gain access to the Ruth Lilly Library, enabling them to easily access the latest research information on various medical topics for free.

“The (hospital) faculty benefits because it re-energizes them, it lets them know that they have left their mark, which in turn benefits the community,” Lamb said.

Dr. Paul Rider, the director of medical education at Reid Hospital, said that’s especially true for local doctors who enjoy and have the time to teach. “You don’t have to go to big cities to have challenging patients,” Rider said.

A $500,000 commitment from the Vigran Family Foundation to Indiana University East and Reid Hospital & Health Care Services helped establish the clinical clerkship program in Richmond.

When the students are not working at Reid or local doctor offices, IU East’s Hayes Hall is their home base. While there, visiting students have access to a new medical student room for study, lounging and required videoconference sessions.

Rebecca Adamson, who is from western Indiana and studies at the Terre Haute campus, said Richmond has been accommodating, both from an academic and social standpoint.

She called the Cardinal Greenway trail system, which runs through Richmond and spans much of east central Indiana, significant. She said Richmond seems to be “health conscious.”

“It’s really nice to have those activities for people to get out and do,” Adamson said.

While at Reid Hospital, where she completed her emergency medicine rotation this fall and worked with as many as four different doctors, she observed the varied routines of the medical staff.

“It’s been a lot different,” Adamson said, in discussing past rotations where she only worked with one or two physicians.

“You get a feel for how different doctors practice. They have their own quirks.”

Most of all, Adamson said, Reid Hospital’s state-of-the-art campus, which opened in 2008, provided an invigorating backdrop to learn.

“It’s beautiful,” she said. “It’s well maintained. It’s a place where people want to go.”

Evan Blum, a medical student from Richmond who came back to his hometown for an outpatient pediatric clinical rotation, agreed.

In Richmond, medical students can complete clerkships in pediatrics, internal, family and emergency medicine, and a medicine sub-internship. Lamb said a special elective in anesthesiology was added recently for students and long-term plans include approaching local surgeons and psychiatrists to be included as part of the partnership.

Additional funding is being provided by the Quigg Family Foundation, as well as through financial and in-kind support from IU East and Reid.

“It was nice to come to Richmond, to Reid Hospital, because it is a new facility and you feel like there isn’t the ego associated with it,” Blum said.

“You felt like you were on an even playing field with everyone,” he said. “We got access to the physicians’ lounge and I struck up conversations with some of the doctors at Reid. It was a nice dynamic.”

Student Events Center will be a g When Indiana University East set out to change its mission five years ago, the ambition was to become the region’s leader in baccalaureate and master’s degree education. IU East is continuing to work toward this ambition with a new aspiration that will continue to change the dynamic of the campus in conjunction with the campus’ mission. In October 2012, IU East announced “Bold Aspirations: The Campaign for the Student Events Center,” which will be a game-changer for IU East.

The future of the campus promises to be exciting – by continuing to grow in student enrollment, academic programs offered, and being a leader in online education – and the events center is a primary feature that will help to attract, retain and graduate students. Increasing IU East’s graduation rate is essential. Increasing the number of students who graduate from IU East will significantly impact local communities, because 86 percent of IU East grads remain in the region. This will have a tremendous impact on the workforce, which has been a challenge for local businesses.

The $4.7 million multi-purpose addition to Springwood Hall will promote student success through a comprehensive offering of co-curricular opportunities. IU East has committed $3 million to the project from savings and efficiencies created over the past few years. The philanthropic goal is $1.7 million. IU East has received more than $1.3 million to date in donations toward the capital campaign, leaving just $400,000 needed to break ground and start construction on the events center in June 2014.

“IU East is among only a handful of traditional bachelor’s degree and graduate institutions in the country without such a facility,” said Interim Chancellor Larry Richards. “It is an essential feature for attracting and retaining students, bringing positive attention to the campus, and contributing to the local economy.”

This fall the campus surpassed a milestone in enrollment with 4,186 students, an 85 percent increase in enrollment since fall 2007. To keep pace with the growing enrollment, IU East has hired 40 new faculty and staff to meet the increase in credit hours taught, additional academic programs being offered, and to provide support and assistance through campus programs. It is projected that enrollment will continue to steadily increase.

“The new facility is a key element in the campus strategic plan for growing the enrollment. It will help retain high school students who are now making decisions to attend institutions outside the region,” Richards said.

Richards added that the Student Events Center is a part of a multifaceted effort to transform the IU East campus to a traditional fouryear institution, while continuing to serve the non-traditional working adult — whether on campus, at off-campus sites or online.

that leverage the beautiful piece of property that was given to Indiana University by community leaders for the purpose of providing educational opportunities for all citizens of the region and beyond. I can foresee additional athletic facilities, a fine and performing arts center, and additional classroom and laboratory buildings in the near future,” Richards said.

As IU East is experiencing growth in enrollment, the campus is strategically expanding its academic programs and providing a robust campus life to help meet its mission of providing each student an environment to grow intellectually and personally.

Students today commute to campus but are now staying on campus to study, to meet with friends in the Graf Center, or to eat at The Den or Brewfus, IU East’s new coffee bar.

Angie Dickman said IU East has seen tremendous growth and is ready to go to the next level to continuing to become a traditional campus for the traditional college student. Dickman, along with community leaders Dan Dickman and Bill and Felicia Quigg, is serving as campaign co-chair.

“Having the events center is critical to reaching that goal because it will become the center of student life outside the classroom for activities, celebrations, and athletics,” Dickman said.

“College students learn much about themselves and life outside of the classroom through activities and events. Having the events center will make IU East’s college experience more fulfilling and well-rounded and create opportunities for those memories and life lessons.”

The Student Events Center will be the home of the Red Wolves and for all students on campus. The center will host a variety of enriching events for academics, student life and cultural programs throughout the year including: • •

Major student events Student life activities, including concerts, comedians, dances, and student organization fairs Health, physical education, and recreation class offerings Formal ceremonies Intramural activities Student internship and career fairs Speaker series for students, alumni, and the community New student orientations, and faculty and staff convocations

Dean of the School of Education Marilyn Watkins said the Student Events Center supports the

growth of IU East’s health, physical education, and recreation programs (HPER). IU East currently offers two minors in this program, coaching and sports marketing and management.

“These minors provide additional career opportunities for students. Also offered are numerous courses that support a healthy life style for students, faculty, and staff. IU East’s new facility will make it possible to explore other options,” Watkins said. “We are excited about the new opportunities.”

The center will improve student recruitment by increasing the number of students who pursue degrees locally instead of leaving the region. By creating opportunities for campus engagement, the center is also expected to increase student retention.

In addition to the events center, an off-campus and independent housing project by Mecca Companies, Inc., is planned for

construction adjacent to the campus and Meijer. This project is expected to appeal to current and future students with its close proximity to campus. With students living next door to IU East, they will be on campus more for classes, activities, events and to socialize with their friends.

Britany Swallow is a senior social work major and president of the Student Government Association. She feels the addition of the events center will be great for the campus by keeping the momentum moving forward while uniting the pack.

“We’ve got a vision and we’re going to reach that vision. I’m totally excited to be able to just stay on campus and support my fellow members of the Pack,” Swallow said. “It’s something that I believe will help draw even more support for our already awesome teams. Part of the college experience is being a united entity. We’re all the Pack and this

helps us by becoming even more of the Pack.”

Not only is the enrollment growing at a record-breaking pace, so is the athletics program. The Red Wolves have the largest athletics program among all IU and Purdue University regional campuses with 10 intercollegiate sports. Student-athletes here have earned national prominence for their academics, community service and athletics.

The events center will be a benefit to the region, bringing additional revenue to area merchants.

“A Student Events Center will allow IU East to host tournaments and post-season play, which will bring people to Richmond and the surrounding area that will stay in local hotels, eat at local restaurants and shop in local stores. The variety of events that can be scheduled in the new facility will be open to the public and add an enhanced level of excitement to the community,” Richards said.

The new Student Events Center is critical to IU East’s efforts to serve students and the region. This new facility will stand as a visible testament to the university’s new mission. It will nurture the kind of dynamic learning community that supports the citizens of today and fuels the progress of tomorrow.

Dickman added that the region’s success is dependent upon a welltrained, well-educated, and well-rounded work force.

“IU East’s students will play a large part in our region’s economic future, so we need them to be as successful and prepared as possible. By enhancing the quality of IU East’s college experience, we enhance the quality of our workforce,” Dickman said.

Alumna travels to China as part of doctorate in physical therapy program Trisha Renner, BS’10, has always wanted to practice medicine. When she first started as an undergraduate at IU East, she was a pre-med student taking courses to fulfill her Bachelor of Science in Biology. She also earned an Associate of Science in Natural Science and Mathematics with a concentration in Chemistry.

She now looks forward to a career in physical therapy, a profession she feels is more aligned to the life she wants, being a mother —Trisha is expecting her second child— and a wife. She is also the vice president of the IU East Alumni Association.

Renner is pursuing a Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree at the University of Dayton.

This summer, she traveled to China through the university’s exchange program with Nanjing Medical University to help students there to learn physical therapy and apply treatments. The trip was August 4-16 and included travel to Shanghai, Nanjing and Beijing.

Renner had to complete an application, have her academic standing reviewed, and received faculty approval in order to be able to go on the trip.

Nanjing Medical University was founded in 1934 and moved to Nanjing in 1957. According to the university, its enrollment is over 10,000 students with graduates working in “hospitals, disease control centers, and medical research institutes throughout the Jiangsu Province and other parts of the country.”

In addition to the coursework and working in field clinics, the University of Dayton students also toured China visiting historic landmarks including the Great Wall of China. For Renner, one of the most memorable experiences on the trip was the time spent in the countryside of Nanjing with one of the Chinese exchange students. She said the experience was eyeopening.

“We were able to see exactly how natives live and we were able to see a glimpse of how much control the government has. This countryside was in the process of being taken by the government,” Renner said. “Family homes of hundreds of years and their vineyards were being replaced with skyscraper apartments. The families were given an apartment in the future building but until it was ready they were placed in temporary housing. This temporary housing was smaller and less sturdy than a mobile home. All of this was without the consent of those affected.”

Renner said the University of Dayton accepts two students each year from Nanjing to complete one semester of coursework. In exchange, the university sends a group of students to China for a week to practice physical therapy there and to continue working with students at Nanjing Medial University. Seven students in Renner’s cohort went on the trip.

“During this time we experience traditional Chinese medicine, their health care system and culture. There are great strides be-

ences was working along with the Nanjing medical students on specific techniques that they were learning to help refine their skills.

“There is a big gap in teaching their rehab students. They often learn from reading books and using the pictures. We were able to help them make sense of some of the techniques and better apply them to increase their effectiveness,” Renner said.

As an applicant to the physical therapy program at the University of Dayton, Renner said her undergraduate degree prepared her for the academic program because she had completed all the necessary coursework for the medical profession. She also worked with IU East Professor of Biology Joan Lafuze through her anatomy classes.

“Anatomy is a crucial component to the physical therapy profession. IU East has been very valuable in that experience,” Renner said.

Lafuze said Renner is an incredible young woman whom she had the pleasure of knowing

first as a student and then as an assistant in her classes.

“Trisha is not only academically gifted, but also she is gifted in many other ways. She was not handed many of the basic advantages that a number of us take for granted. Not only did she take advantage of the wonderful opportunities that IU East provides students, she contributed her talents in assisting others to learn,” Lafuze said. “She set an example of cheerful caring and giving for all of us. I am not surprised at all to learn of Trisha’s success.”

Renner also worked in the Math Lab, which was an opportunity for her to stay connected to the Natural Science and Mathematics faculty. Once she graduated with her degree, she stayed with IU East as an adjunct professor in mathematics. As an alumna, she continues to be involved with the university and volunteers her time as a member of the IU East Alumni Association, where she has served as vice president and supporter of current students and future alumni.

“IU East gave me a great foundation for which I have been able to build upon. I feel that IU East prepared me to do exceptionally well and to earn a graduate assistantship to help fund my current degree,” Renner said. “I am proud to be a Red Wolf and I know that I have done well in graduate school because IU East prepared me well.”

Located in the lower Yangtze River drainage basin and Yangtze River Delta economic zone, Nanjing has long been one of China’s most important cities. It is recognized as one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China. It was the capital of Sun Quan Wu during the Three Kingdoms Period and the capital of the Republic of China prior to its flight to Taiwan during the Chinese Civil War. Nanjing is also one of the15 sub-provincial cities in the People’s Republic of China’s administrative structure, enjoying jurisdictional and economic autonomy only slightly less than that of a province. Nanjing has long been a national centre of education, research, transport networks and tourism. The city will host the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics.

The Perfect Cookie Rufus the Red Wolf is a beloved mascot popular with fans young and old alike. It was his appeal to the campus and community that made him the perfect fit for a signature cookie being developed by IU East Chef Martina Chomel and the culinary staff.

Rufus has grown in popularity since he became IU East’s official mascot in 2008. He attends community, campus and athletic events and is often sought out by children and adults for a high-five and now familiar “Wolf Wave.”

Creating the perfect cookie cutter for Rufus had its challenges.

Chef Chomel wanted to offer a signature cookie through The Den, IU East’s campus restaurant and catering service. She wanted to offer a cookie that would be unique to Richmond and only available through IU East.

After an extensive search online for a wolf cookie cutter, Chef Chomel decided to make her own cookie cutter. She initially tried a side-view of Rufus’ image but the result was a shape more consistent with a horse, she laughed. The culinary team also developed another cookie cutter that would be the face of Rufus, except the lines were too indistinct. The team experimented with different types of dough and different icings and techniques to try and get the face of Rufus to be more prominent in the cookie.

“We made about 700 cookies trying to get the cookie right,” Chef Chomel said.

Chef Chomel found that the initial cookie cutter was too time consuming and the finished product would have been too costly to sell at The Den. She needed a signature cookie that could also be mass produced quickly and be affordable for patrons.

In early 2012, Chef Chomel consulted Ed Thornburg, art gallery curator and lecturer in fine arts, about developing a cookie cutter in the image of Rufus. Thornburg instructs the metalsmithing classes at IU East.

“At the time it seemed plausible, but the familiar image of the Red Wolf seemed problematic.

The sharp angles and pointy characteristics of the face did not lend itself to the baking characteristics of cookie dough, with the softened lines, etc.,” Thornburg said. “Nevertheless, I constructed a silhouette of the wolf from copper strips and we tried it out in The Den kitchen.”

The process was to apply icing upon the shape after baking for facial details. The team realized that this direction was not going to be successful. The finished cookie was odd and inconsistent plus the production was slow and ineffective, Thornburg said.

After the first attempt didn’t go as planned, it was suggested that the mascot costume be used for the design. This allowed for softer lines and angles as well as fewer details, making the mascot costume a more ideal model for a cookie cutter.

Thornburg created a new general outline for the cookie cutter. He then gave the prototype to Chef Chomel to test in the kitchen to find out if the cookie cutter would make for a better Rufus cookie.

After Chef Chomel and the culinary team developed a cookie dough that worked with the design, Thornburg used the prototype to create a template. He formed a silhouette of Rufus and then filled in the linear details, soldering copper as he went. Thornburg said the cookie cutter is designed so that the edge silhouette cuts the cookie out while the interior details are pressed into the face just enough to make the lines.

The cookie cutter itself is made from scrap copper and weighs no more than two ounces.

“It was fun, yet more time-consuming than I had imagined it to be. The fun for me in any art project is the success at the problem-solving.

Not all of my art ventures have been this successful and this one was far from perfect. I was delighted when it passed the ‘Martina’ test,” Thornburg said.

Chef Chomel uses a specially developed sugar cookie recipe to press the Rufus shape. Once baked, the cookies are glazed and dusted with cinnamon and sugar.

The official Rufus the Red Wolf cookies debuted during the 2012 Commencement Ceremony in May. Since then, the cookies are often requested for campus events.

One Book, Many Voices

Dave Isay, founder of StoryCorps Project and guest speaker for IU East’s “One Book, Many Voices” project.

It was the mission of IU East this fall to bring the story of individuals and the community to the forefront through its “One Book, Many Voices” project. The project was centered on the book Listening is an Act of Love, edited by Dave Isay who founded NPR’s StoryCorps Project.

The book was selected because of its diverse and far-reaching themes collected through oral histories and the emphasis on self-awareness and a sense of place and personal history.

The “One Book, Many Voices” project demonstrated how engaged and engaging discussions can include diverse voices, perspectives, and ideas that can lead to positive civic engagement and improvement.

The mission of the project has been to foster a campus and community discussion about themes in and ideas inspired by a common text in an effort to develop camaraderie, inform knowledge, and inspire action towards positive civic engagement and improvement.

The “One Book, Many Voices” project began at the start of the fall semester. Freshman and transfer students as well as faculty, staff and select alumni and community groups were provided a free copy of the book. IU East distributed over 1,500 copies of Listening is an Act of Love to help foster the discussion and community connection.

The book was also sold at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore on the IU East campus and at Ginkgo Boutique Gift Shop at Reid Hospital.

Katherine Frank, dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, created and organized the project. She said more than 20 community partners and events have been featured on campus and throughout community venues from August through December 2012.

She added that the local media outlets, especially the PalladiumItem, have been instrumental in helping to get the word out about the project.

“The project has progressed beautifully across the course of the semester,” Frank said. “The mission of the ‘One Book, Many Voices’ project, to foster community conversation and civic engagement based on themes in the selected book, has resonated with the Wayne County community and led to enthusiasm and activity.”

In addition to the community events, partners such as MorrissonReeves Library and Friends Fellowship have held book discussions.

One of the book discussions was hosted by the IU East Alumni Association. The IUEAA invited alumni to share their own thoughts,

reflections and stories with a light supper on October 11. The event was in conjunction with the IU Alumni Association’s program, “Around a Common Table,” which invites alumni to gather to share fellowship centered on a common theme.

“As alumni we tell the story of our alma mater every day. We connect to each other from that common story,” said Terry Wiesehan, director of Alumni Relations and Campus Events.

Isay visited the campus October 16-17 to share some of the recorded and animated stories collected through StoryCorps. Over 500 free tickets were distributed for Isay’s visit to Vivian Auditorium Oct. 16. Many laughed or cried while listening to the stories. He also shared the first viewing of a story animation on Ronald McNair, shared by his brother Carl McNair. Ronald was an astronaut on board the Space Shuttle Challenger and died in the explosion in January 1986. The animation will later be released by StoryCorps. The original story by Carl McNair aired on NPR in January 2011.

Isay was also the featured speaker at the IU East’s Spirit of Philanthropy Luncheon held Oct. 17 at Forest Hills Country Club. More than 170 people attended the event.

“One of the true highlights of this project was the visit by Dave Isay.

He emphasized throughout his visit how impressed he was with the preparation and enthusiasm for his trip to Richmond and how it was clear to him that the community was not only poised to continue listening and sharing stories, but also to move on to a new stage of development with the project,” Frank said.

Amber Hall, B.A. ’06, said she enjoyed reading the book and discussing it with members of the IU East Alumni Association Board. She has also shared about the book with her coworkers.

“It was so nice to read about regular people, not politicians or rich and famous people writing about themselves, just normal, regular, everyday people. These people are the ones that we can relate to,” Hall said. “I laughed, I cried (once during my lunch at work, I had to put it down at that point!), it was average Joes turning into heroes and not even knowing it. Or it was someone just wanting to share a story.”

What’s Your Story — Charlotte Gardner, affectionately known as “Nana” to her loved ones, traveled from Charlotte, N.C. to talk with her granddaughter Jeanine about what it was like growing up in Chicago in the 1920’s. She brought with her a stack of colorful, tattered war bonds that her family had in their possession from World War II. “We would use these bonds to buy rationed food and gas,” Charlotte said. “It was a hard time.”

— Jarrod Fortwendel took a flight from Mobile, Ala. to Nashville, Tenn. to pick up his sister, Jane, before driving four hours to Atlanta. Jane was diagnosed with scleroderma in 2005, a life-threatening illness that has given her a new outlook on her purpose and personal relationships. “Having the chance to record my sister’s story was very important to me. I have not lived near my sister or parents for a long time, since long before her diagnosis, and do not get to interact with her on a daily basis”, Jarrod said. “Doing StoryCorps has made me understand how truly and unbelievably strong my sister is.”

The distinctive hum of a Segway at IU East has become a clear signal that one of the Campus Police officers is nearby on patrol.

On one clear afternoon in November, the steady hum of the Segway turned to energetic bursts and sudden halts.

“Just take it easy. Don’t try to set any records. Get used to leaning.”

Officer Aaron Roberts’ clear instructions broke through the hum of the Segway. He was training IU East’s new police cadets, Nikolas Natali and Sergio Santiago, how to use the transportation device.

For the first time this fall, the IU East Campus Police Department is offering a professional training program for students interested in law enforcement careers. IU East is participating in the Indiana University Police Department Cadet Program.

“They are both doing very well,” Chief Cole said. “They are learning the ropes and working with police officers to learn security details.”

The police cadets will have a competitive edge and greater marketability as new graduates because the program provides professional experience, and they will be certified police officers once they complete the Indiana University Police Department Basic Academy.

Santiago, of Richmond, Ind., and Natali, of Somerville, Ohio, are juniors majoring in criminal justice at IU East. Both attend classes full-time and work with the Campus Police Department 15-20 hours per week.

The police cadets will be eligible to attend the IUPD Basic Academy, a 14-week program held each August, if they continue to show an aptitude for police work and maintain a GPA of at least 2.3.

According to the IUPD, the Basic Academy provides a comprehensive and unique law enforcement training program which, when coupled with the university’s educational programs, produces a highly qualified, experienced, and educated law enforcement professional.

Cadets in the academy receive complete law enforcement training required by the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. Once the program is successfully completed, the cadets become certified law enforcement officers with full police authority in the state of Indiana.

After graduating from the academy, the students will return to work as part-time officers at IU East while completing their academic degree program.

Santiago and Natali began the cadet program October 8, 2012.

Each has a different path for choosing law enforcement as a career, but both are united in the fact that members of their families have a background in the field. Natali’s stepfather was a police officer and his brother works for the Brookville Police Department. Santiago’s father was a state policeman in Oaxaca, Mexico, before the family moved to Richmond in his childhood.

Santiago at one time considered a career in veterinary medicine. It was a conversation with a Wayne County Sheriff Deputy that really drew his interest to a career in law enforcement. It also helped that police vehicles “are pretty cool.”

Aside from the souped-up cars, he truly believes that this is the career for him, so he enrolled in the criminal justice program at IU East.

“I got into it to help people. You can rest assured when something happens, we’ll be there to help you. It’s an exciting career, especially for young people like us,” Santiago said.

In addition to their academic studies and work with the police department, Santiago is also completing the Richmond Citizen Patrol Academy through the Richmond Police Department. It is his ambition to become a city police officer or state trooper once he graduates.

Natali would also like to become a police officer but he would eventually like to work at the federal level by joining the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration or the U.S. Marshals Service.

As an undergraduate preparing for a career, Natali said the law enforcement profession is appealing to him because he was attracted to the job security and has a desire to help people. When his stepfather passed away, Natali said he admired him for leaving his family benefits, including a pension, that paid for him to go to school.

“It goes hand-in-hand with my personality,” Natali said. “Everything in my life has led me to this.”

Natali said training with the officers at IU East provides him and Santiago with a diverse knowledge and practice in police work. Two of the IU East officers are a former police chief and sheriff, providing senior experience in addition to basic skills.

“We get all the experience from the officers on campus,” Natali said. “All of the officers have their own way of doing things. It just

shows me and Sergio how to talk with people. I think that’s the most important part of the program. We uphold the duty of law enforcement and is to make people feel safe and that we’re friendly so that they are able to talk with us.”

Santiago and Natali are also training each week to prepare for the academy. Santiago was on the cross country team at Richmond High School and continues to run three to five times a week. He said the academic coursework in the criminal justice program – including criminal justice law and writing briefs – is also preparing them for the academy.

“I’m looking forward to learning everything. It’s going to be exciting,” Santiago said.

The IU East Campus Police Department employs six full-time officers, and patrols the Ivy Tech Community College campus as well.

Roberts, who joined the department in 2011, is now the training officer at IU East. He completed training and is an Indiana Certified Police Trainer through the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.

“I’m very pleased with Sergio and Nikolas. I think they’re going to represent IU East very well here and at the academy at IU,” Roberts said.

“The opportunity for students is incredible. When they graduate they will have a criminal justice degree, they will be certified police officers, and they will be equal to me in hirability. They will be extremely marketable to any department in Indiana because of their basic police work and experience,” Roberts said.

He added, “The cadet program is extremely valuable because it provides two more officers in uniform, making the department more visible on campus. Additionally, it is an opportunity to build a rapport with students in the criminal justice program by providing a viable training option,” Roberts said.

Roberts said having the police cadets join the police department gives the officers a renewed energy.

“We see the excitement in these young guys and that has really been great for us,” Roberts said.

As for the Segway, Santiago and Natali had the coordination down pat to operate the device in a matter of minutes.

“This is fun. It’s easier than walking. I’m just going to do a 360,” Santiago said.

The President owes his paycheck to the work of Noah Douglas.

Processing the paycheck for the President of the United States is just one of the many transactions that takes place at the Emmett J. Bean Federal Center in Indianapolis, where 2010 Indiana University East graduate and former Red Wolves basketball player Noah Douglas has worked as a payroll technician since March.

For the record, Douglas doesn’t actually have an active role in processing the President’s paycheck. “The person who handles the President’s stuff is in their own secluded area,” he said. “You have to have a punch code and another security clearance.”

Douglas’ main role is resolving pay discrepancies for federal employees and military personnel. He is one of about 5,000 employees at the nation’s second-largest federal building, second only to the Pentagon.

“It would definitely look like any other office if you didn’t look at the papers,” Douglas said. “Everyone has cubicles and supervisors right there, so it doesn’t look too much like a military base.”

Douglas says both his IU East classes and his time on the Red Wolves basketball team prepared him for his current position.

Douglas was a Dean’s List student at IU East while earning his degree in business administration.

“A lot of the business classes I took did a good job applying real-world scenarios, so we weren’t going straight by the book,” Douglas said. “When I see something at work, I can be like, ‘I remember that from class.’”

Douglas averaged 12.5 points and 6.9 rebounds per game during his 2009-10 season on the Red Wolves basketball team. No one has come close to approaching Douglas’ school record of eight double-doubles in one season.

“Sports helped out a lot because the way our building works, you are on a team of people and you have to work with your team to get the job done,” Douglas said. “Being a good teammate and being able to communicate are important in basketball, and it’s important here because we are dealing with people who are putting their life on the line for their country and we want to make sure they get paid in a timely fashion and paid what they should be paid.”

Douglas hopes to work his way up to a position working with production metrics. “That’s what I did during school,” he said.

Douglas’ professional career is off to a bright start, and he hasn’t “retired” from his basketball career. He took part in the IU East basketball program’s alumni game in October, where he got a glowing introduction from Red Wolves Coach Mark Hester.

“I had all of our current players sitting down and I told them, the big thing is all of these (alumni) players have jobs – good jobs,” Hester said. “That to me is what makes me proud from a coaching standpoint. Hopefully they’re using some of the skills we taught them in some way.”

Douglas still competes in several basketball leagues in Indianapolis. He put himself through an intense week of workouts at IU East in September as part of his training regimen.

“I’m still trying to take one last shot at playing basketball in any kind of pro league,” he said. “What I want to do is get myself in better shape, and then I’m going to take another really serious shot at playing again.”

Venus More than 20 Indiana University East tennis players, faculty and staff members got a chance to meet IU East’s top tennis-playing online student following Venus Williams’ win at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati on August 14.

“Getting to actually talk to her was the best part of the day,” said freshman tennis player Chelsea Helms. “We told her that she played really well and that it was great to see her play in person – and that she needed to come and visit the campus!”

Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion and a four-time Olympic gold medalist, is pursuing a B.S. in Business through IU East’s online programs. Williams’ appearance in Cincinnati was the first match she played near IU East since enrolling at the school in 2011.

The pack of Red Wolves filled IU East’s “Wolfmobile” bus on short notice early Aug. 14 for the chance to watch Williams play in person.

The Red Wolves sat high in the upper deck, but they made their presence known throughout the whole stadium. They were the ones with the Venus Williams “big head,” plus signs with slogans like “Venus - Part of the Pack” and “IU East loves Venus.”

Williams’ father, Richard, noticed. He made his way up to the IU East contingent and sat with the group for most of the first set.

“He was excited to be with us and talked about how much Venus loves school,” said IU East Assistant Director of Admissions for Transfer

Following Williams’ match, the IU East group was ushered to a private, players-only area.

“Venus saw us walking in and called out, ‘Go Red Wolves!’ She was so excited we were walking in there,” Current said.

Williams spent about 45 minutes with the IU East group, chatted about tennis and school, signed autographs and posed for photos.

“Getting to see Venus play in person was something I never thought I would get to do,” Helms said. “And then when we found out we were actually going to meet her that was even more exciting.”

Williams has won more than 600 matches in her professional career, but this is the one her fans at IU East will remember most.

“I know the tennis players were overwhelmed,” Current said. “They were thinking, ‘She’s the reason I play.’ To see that was definitely the highlight of the day.

“And the impact Venus has had on our campus ... I’ve had several contacts with students interested in IU East solely because of her attending our campus. That speaks volumes because she is an Olympic-decorated athlete, a Grand Slam champion and a role model within several different communities - including ours!”

IU East’s Search for a Chancellor

By summer, Indiana University and IU East hope to have a new chancellor in place. Currently, the firm of Storbeck/Pimentel and Associates are facilitating the search to bring top candidates to campus.

The search and screen committee began meeting in September to start the national search for a chancellor. Larry Richards, IU East executive vice chancellor for academic affairs and professor of informatics and management, has served as interim chancellor since June 15.

The goal is to have completed the search by spring with a new chancellor beginning his or her term July 2013.

Brewfus: New Coffee Bar Provides Dining Option for Students and the Campus Community A new coffee bar at IU East opened this fall in the Springwood Hall Graf Center Lounge.

Brewfus offers a menu of hot and cold beverages including fresh brewed coffee, lattes, espresso, mochas, hot chocolate, teas, steamed milk, and smoothie drinks. The coffee bar provides a selection of hot and cold foods to eat in the Graf or while on the go.

This summer, IU East worked to renovate the Graf Center Lounge for Brewfus to provide a welcoming environment for students to gather and to study. The space will receive new carpet and furniture this spring.

Brewfus is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Mondays-Thursdays, and 7:30 a.m. to noon on Fridays. Brewfus is operated by IU East Food Services which also oversees the campus restaurant, The Den.

Homecoming 2012: Red Wolves Rising IU East welcomed alumni and the community to attend “Homecoming 2012: Red Wolves Rising” the week of November 12. Events throughout the week celebrated IU East’s tradition and spirit of the Red Wolf pack.

Homecoming included student-centered events; Monday Madness, performance by Comedian/Magician Michael Kent, and the Nearly Naked Mile, an event sponsored by the IU East Alumni Association for students to collect donations of gently used items of clothing such as coats, hats, or gloves.

The Bonfire, Pep Rally and men’s basketball games also brought alumni and current students together. The Homecoming Court and King and Queen were announced during the IU East versus IU Kokomo basketball game. Rufus the Red Wolf also celebrated his birthday with cake for guests.

IU East Continues to Improve Facilities Visitors to campus will find that improvements to the Whitewater Hall Lobby, Tom Raper Hall and Hayes Hall are now completed.

Over the summer, IU East renovated the second floor of Hayes Hall to provide more offices for faculty as well as a classroom and computer lab for the Campus Library. The new office space and classroom help to accommodate the new faculty hired at the start of the fall semester. IU East welcomed 15 new faculty this fall to further enhance the campus’ mission as a comprehensive bachelor’s and master’s degree institution.

IU East recently completed improvements to the Whitewater Hall Lobby and Tom Raper Hall lounge areas. New furniture and tables have provided an updated, fresh area for students to study or to meet with friends.

Several projects are planned for summer 2013. The campus will replace the original 500 ton chiller installed in 1974. They also plan to renovate the Community Room in Whitewater Hall to create an opening to The Gallery so that the two spaces may be used jointly for large events. A reconstruction project is planned for the Mikesell Plaza to provide a campus focal point and sculpture garden site, creating an outdoor gathering place for students, and to upgrade the storm water drainage infrastructure at the Mikesell Plaza.

IU East is also planning to construct an additional parking lot to support campus enrollment growth.

Creating Networks and Pipelines for Women Leaders

The Indiana University East Center for Leadership Development’s Academy for Cultivating Talent (ACT) began its first program this fall. “Carry It Forward: Creating Networks and Pipelines for Women Leaders,” includes 22 talented women who are poised to have greater influence in their organizations, institutions, or communities. The focus of the program is to create pipelines for women to leadership positions in business and civic engagement and work with professional women in midlevel or senior-level positions who are poised to make a difference in their organization and community.

The ACT was initiated in summer 2012 after IU East received a grant from the Indiana University Women’s Philanthropy Council for the community-focused program. The ACT was established to foster the talents of specific and diverse populations not yet fully engaged — socially or economically — in their community and to advance the larger IU East region’s economic and cultural development.

IU East School of Education Welcomes Community Comments for NCATE Accreditation The Indiana University East School of Education is hosting an accreditation visit by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) March 24-26, 2013. The School of Education has been accredited by NCATE since January 1992.

Interested parties are invited to submit third-party comments to the visiting team. Please note that comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of professional education programs offered, and should specify the party’s relationship to the institution (i.e., graduate, present or former faculty member, employer of graduates).

The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education’s dual mission is accountability and improvement in education preparation. The NCATE accreditation process establishes rigorous standards for teacher education programs, holds accredited institutions accountable for meeting these standards, and encourages unaccredited schools to demonstrate the quality of their programs by working for and achieving professional accreditation.

For NCATE’s performance-based accreditation system, institutions must provide evidence of competent teacher candidate performance.

NCATE accredited colleges of education are expected to ensure that teacher candidates know their subject and how to teach it effectively.

The U.S. Department of Education recognizes NCATE as a professional accrediting body for colleges and universities that prepare teachers and other professional personnel for work in elementary and secondary schools.

National Science Foundation Grant Indiana University East and Earlham College received a $168,739 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) in April 2012 to explore the soil bacteria in soybean and corn fields. Beyond the research, the grant is fostering partnerships within the Richmond community, specifically between Earlham College and IU East.

The grant is funding an interdisciplinary research project, “Using Metagenomics to Realize an Education Partnership and Stimulate Curriculum Development.” The project is under the direction of Earlham College faculty Christopher R. Smith, assistant professor of biology, Peter L. Blair, associate professor of biology, and Charles F. Peck, associate professor of computer science; and IU East faculty Hitesh Kathuria, assistant professor of chemistry, Neil Sabine, associate professor of biology, and Parul Khurana, visiting assistant professor of biology.

The project examines what bacteria exist here, how it behaves and how it is different in each location in order to improve agricultural practices and indicate the health of the soil. The technology used to describe the soil bacteria communities generates a massive quantity of data in the form of DNA sequences. The team from Earlham and IU East is integrating the data into courses so that students at both institutions can help analyze and mine the data.

The faculty and students are conducting in-class research using data with local and global relevance, use modern technologies and computational approaches, and integrating principles of molecular and organismal biology. In addition, the data and course materials developed will be made freely available for use by other researchers and educators.

IU East receives PRIDE OF CASE V Awards IU East has received a Gold award in the Best New Alumni Program category for its “ReConnect 2012” campaign and a Silver in the Best Collaborative Programs category for Run with the Wolves 5K from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District V. CASE is an international association of education advancement officers, and District V includes members from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.

“ReConnect 2012” was an innovative program with a “new student orientation” format to re-orient alumni to campus. The Run with the Wolves 5K is held annually in July and attracts more than 500 participants. The event proceeds benefit the IU East Alumni Association and IU East Athletics.

The awards were presented during the “CASE V&VI Conference: Better Together” conference held December 9-11 in Chicago.

Since 2009, IU East’s Office of External Affairs has been recognized with more than 40 regional and national awards for excellence and innovation in university advancement.

STAT Organizes the first “Spirit of Philanthropy Week” Students Today Alumni Tomorrow (STAT) organized the first Spirit of Philanthropy Week at IU East.

The Spirit of Philanthropy Week carried the message to students that philanthropy isn’t about how much they give to IU East, it’s about being a part of something bigger than themselves. The goal was to have 12 percent of IU East students donate to the scholarship fund.

To kick off the week, Awareness Day provided students the opportunity to learn about the generosity of donors.

Signs were posted around campus about how students benefit from outstanding donor support. A Thank-A-Thon was organized so that students could share their appreciation to donors by sending a personalized note. Students were encouraged to demonstrate “Random Acts of Wolfery” throughout Participation Day, which could have included picking up trash, paying for someone’s coffee or sharing possession of the remote control with a roommate.

“I would say to nurses today to be tenacious.

Keep to your goals. There is an entire future of nursing out there.” —Matthew Starr, BSN’01 In high school, Matthew Starr was uncertain of where his path would lead. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to study or what direction his life was going to take after college.

“I have to say I always wanted to become a nurse,” Starr said. “I come from a long history of nurses in my family so I thought this sounded like a great field to get into. Once I did I was so happy it found me.”

Today Starr, BSN’01, is the executive director of the Emergency Medical Trauma Center at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He started his job there in May 2012. He is responsible for setting the direction, vision, budget and development of about 300 nurses in two separate emergency departments in the Washington, D.C. area.

The journey along the path to nursing began at IU East.

He choose IU East because of the high percentage of students passing the nursing boards, and because his aunt, Kimberly Winner, was a nursing student in the BSN program and gave the school rave reviews, he said.

While a senior at IU East, Starr completed an internship with St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He was one of two applicants chosen to work with children fighting cancer. He also performed research and wrote research articles on childhood cancers and obtained in-depth knowledge of the nursing and research processes, he said. He added the internship was one of the most memorable moments because he was able to sign his authorship papers for his first publication with then School of Nursing Dean Joanne Raines-Warner.

Assistant Clinical Professor of Nursing Mary Folkerth said Starr is an exceptional nurse and human being.

Starr lived in Indianapolis during his senior year and traveled to the Richmond campus to complete the courses for his bachelor’s degree.

“I knew right from the start of his pediatric nursing experience here at IU East that his field of expertise and practice would be pediatric nursing. I can remember the day he told me he had received an internship at St. Jude’s working with children with cancer. I could not have been more proud of him,” Folkerth said.

“The class sizes and enthusiasm for the profession the professors had at IU East was palpable and infectious.

Folkerth said Starr’s compassion and premier nursing skills with acutely and chronically ill children and their families was exemplary.

“He was a role model for his peers in all areas of his nursing education. I will always recall his sensitive care given to a child who was severely physically and emotionally delayed,” Folkerth said.

Alumni from the Class of 2001 may remember Starr as the student speaker at the Commencement Ceremony. During his address to the class, Starr encouraged his classmates to continue following their individual path and to allow their degree to serve as “the testimony of both your strength and determination.”

“But where do all of these roads lead us? The paths that we take serve not only to lead us to and take us from the places in our lives. They serve to define us,” Starr said in his speech.

“Even more than the prestige awarded to you today is an immense power, that of opportunity, the opportunity to better your life, the opportunity to better the lives of others, and the opportunity to shape your future. And who knows, you may even change the world in the process.”

Following graduation from IU East, Starr went on to attend graduate school and earned his Master of Science in Nursing Administration from IUPUI in 2006. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Nursing Practice through Indiana University.

The School of Nursing honored two other individuals with Nursing Excellence Awards during the gala. Kay Cartwright received the Lifetime in Nursing Award and Mary Hoppe was the recipient of the Friend to Nursing Award. Cartwright is the vice president and chief nursing officer at Reid Hospital & Health Care Services and Hoppe has owned and operated Hoppe Jewelers in Richmond, Ind., since 1951.

Before joining the children’s center in D.C., Starr was the administrative director at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis from November 2010 to May 2012. He was also formerly the assistant clinical director of operations at Riley Hospital for Children. He is affiliated with the Society of Pediatric Nursing Sigma Theta Tau, the American Organization of Nurse Executives, and the Indiana Organization of Nurse Executives. He is also a founding member of the American Assembly for Men in Nursing. He is a former board member of the Indiana University School of Nursing Alumni Association.

Starr received the Outstanding Nursing Alumni Award by the School of Nursing during the gala “Celebration of Caring: Toasting a Legacy” on September 28 at J&J Winery.

“I am very proud to call him a colleague, friend and graduate of our nursing program. We could not have a better representative of our nursing program here at IU East.” Folkerth said.

“I would say to nurses today to be tenacious. Keep to your goals. There is an entire future of nursing out there and they just have to be willing to explore what they want to do,” Starr said. “With health care reform we will be ever more dependent on nurses in the future within the health care continuum in what I call Pediatrics to Geriatrics. Nurses will be asked to help shape the future of health care and new nurses must be knowledgeable and poised to take on this great responsibility.”

IU East Volleyball Team wins NAIA ‘national championship’ for sportsmanship IU East’s volleyball team received the honor out of 228 institutions that compete in NAIA volleyball at the NAIA Volleyball National Championship Banquet of Champions on November 26 at the Sioux City Convention Center.

The award represents the NAIA volleyball Champions of Character “national championship.”

The honor caught the Red Wolves players and coaches completely off guard. They got to accept the award as a group in front of a full room of national finalists.

“Coolest thing ever!” said sophomore defensive specialist Cinder Weber, who compared the experience of receiving the trophy at the awards banquet to winning an Oscar or a Grammy.

The NAIA presents Five Star Champions of Character Team Awards for each of the NAIA’s 23 championship sports. Teams that receive this prestigious award demonstrate in everyday decisions integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership. These institutions and athletic programs strive for excellence in and out of competition and are part of communities throughout the country dedicated to character-driven intercollegiate athletics.

IU East’s volleyball players contributed to their communities in many ways. One Red Wolf volunteered to keep score for a youth league in her hometown. Another took part in a local Relay For Life. Several Red Wolves took part in a community cleanup day in Richmond this past April. IU East’s seniors and freshmen visited the tennis teams on their first day of practice to welcome new students and pass out goodie bags.

“Without pride, character, and positive attitudes, a team cannot function properly,” senior libero Kristin Waechter (Muncie, Ind./ Daleville High School) wrote in the team’s nomination materials.

“Having solid character demonstrates leadership. Without this, it is hard to establish a good team dynamic. Team dynamics are largely influenced by a team’s identity. The identity of a team is determined by the character of each individual. If a team has good character, it is analogous to a well-oiled engine. Without enough oil, an engine will not run effectively. The same goes for character and team dynamics.

Without positive attitudes, pride, honesty, and leadership, a team will not function properly.”

Red Wolves Coach Charlie Brown says character was a cornerstone of IU East’s 40-win season.

“Character represents moral value and reputation,” Brown said. “Team character is the foundation for what the team believes in and what it stands for and what it strives for.”

It is the first Champions of Character Team Award for the IU East volleyball program and the fifth for the school’s athletic department. IU East received the Buffalo Funds Five Star Champions of Character Award for men’s basketball in 2009 and 2011, for men’s golf in 2011 and for women’s golf in 2011. “It’s an indication of the quality kids we have in the athletic department and the quality things they do,” said IU East Athletic Director Mark Hester.

1979 Marilyn Clark released a new book, Mrs. Crachit’s Christmas, a retelling of Charles Dicken’s classic tale A Christmas Carol. The book tells Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s perspective and how an encounter with three Christmas Spirits turns Ebenezer Scrooge from a miserly cynic into a kind philanthropist. Clark’s story is the change of Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s feelings toward her husband’s employer from anger and resentment to gratitude and love.

Dear Editor, I read with great delight your feature on Noriko Kuwahara in the summer issue of Radius. I was a classmate of Noriko’s while I was working on my undergraduate degree in nursing and I remember the cherry tree dedication. Noriko was a beautiful young woman who introduced our summer speech class to the riches of international studies.

Noriko, if you read this I gave you a yellow rose in a farewell speech on the last day of class.

I was so proud to see the picture of her lovely family. Not surprising, Noriko credits her IU East experience for supporting her dreams of higher education and community inclusion.

Nothing is impossible if you dare to dream it!

Like Noriko I too have many fond memories of my time at IU East. I have studied at other institutions, but none can hold a candle to IU East.

East 56th most connected college or university in the nation, tops in Indiana

A recent report released by U.S. News & World Report ranks Indiana University East as the 56th most connected four-year campus in the United States, the highest among all Indiana institutions based on internet speed, internet access, applications, and resources. The U.S. News Most Connected Colleges report measures schools’ effectiveness in providing online services, including online courses, student technology and social networking.

According to U.S. News, the schools were ranked based on responses to the Best Colleges statistical survey collected during the spring and summer of 2012. Schools responded to questions on the technological offerings during the 2011-2012 academic year. The answers were then used to compute a Connectivity Index for each school: the sum of all point values awarded to schools based on their responses to the technology questions.

Todd Duke, director of Information Technology, said this is a great accomplishment for IU East.

“The dedication of the staff and the level of service IU East provides to its students is second to none. Coupled with IU East’s membership and connection to the I-Light network, students can take full advantage of the vast array of resources Indiana University and the Internet provides and can access this information at an unprecedented speed.”

U.S. News published ranks for all schools scoring 50 or higher, a total of 278 schools across the country, nine in Indiana. In all there were 1,471 schools that provided connectivity data, according to U.S. News.

IU East Interim Chancellor Larry Richards observed that “this is significant, but not surprising. IU East has been a leader nationally in undergraduate online education and in the use of social networking to connect current, prospective and graduating students.”

IU East scored 60.7 on the Connectivity Index. “Students at IU East have the opportunity to access state-of-the art technology in order to connect with each other for educational, co-curricular or just social purposes,” said Richards. “The importance of being connected has grown and will continue to grow as the world becomes a virtual village.”
