Itzel Garcia PORTFOLIOLife can be challenging as a student due to the extraneous work needed to put in their studies, and balancing activities outside of school. However, I come from a Hispanic household where hard work and determination is needed to reach your goals. Since I started college, I have been attending school part time and working a part time job. Having the opportunity to be able to work, study, and fund my education at the same time is an example that hard work pays off. The fact that I can have a busy schedule can be overwhelming but to de-stress I work out. I have been weightlifting for the past four years and it helps with my physical and mental health. It helps me forget all my stress and responsibilities, which is a huge advantage.
After obtaining my Bachelors of Interior Architecture and Design, I would love to work as a commercial or residential interior designer. I chose interior design because I love to help people. Diversity is important to me because no one should feel excluded regardless of your background, financial status, health, gender, etc. Growing up I have witnessed that minority communities are not represented enough. I want to represent all minorities that do not have a voice or resources to create inspiring spaces. Applying universal design standards and ADA guidelines to interiors will provide an allinclusive environment that will generate a sense of belonging and community.
NEXT is an architecture and interior design firm based in Los Angeles, California. Work areas will be color coded for easy access, and ceiling elements will be implemented to create zones for workspaces, collaboration, and private spaces. Adjustable furniture and a variety of seating clusters will allow workers to have the ability to choose where to work. Collaboration spaces will be orange with open space for large gatherings, meanwhile private spaces will be enclosed by walls for an intimate environment. State of the art technology will be implemented for in person or online presentations and collaboration. The use of color will create a stimulating work environment that will promote creativity, productivity, diversity, and collaboration.
In the case of NEXT, interior designers and architects will be coming together, collaborating on smaller pieces to make a larger picture. This narration inspired me to create small colored acrylic pieces that were glued to make a large sculpture. The colors listed below are implemented throughout the workplace as a wayfinding strategy.

The healthcare workstation consists of suspended blue acoustical ceiling elements to lower the ceiling height while zoning the workstation. The workstation furniture contains monochromatic blues to lighten the work environment. Creating a contrast between shades of blues adds interest and dimension to the space. A huddle space, color coded orange, can be seen on the left-hand side on the enlarged floor plan. Orange throughout the workplace signifies collaboration and communication. Designers and architects will have no difficulty finding where to collaborate throughout the building. 6
The education workstation is color coded green through the use of ceiling elements, workstation borders, and upholstery on office chairs. A huddle space can be seen on the perspective, creating a visual of where collaboration can occur. Next to the huddle space two private offices can be seen. Each studio has two private offices that overlook their designated studio. The curtain glass wall has a hint of green to reflect the wayfinding strategy.
The corporate workstation is color coded yellow. Yellow ceiling elements and furniture are depicted to zone the workstation and follow through the concept of wayfinding. The huddle spaces have office chairs with orange upholstery signifying the collaboration area. The lockers help zone the huddle space to provide a sense of privacy.

This is an assumed drawing construction of wall to ceiling connection. With knowledge of how walls are constructed and slight understanding of ceiling construction, a hand drawing was put together.
This project consisted of adaptive reuse to host residential housing for the aging. Requirements such as creating an all-inclusive environment and a certain number of residential units had to be met. Therefore, this project consists of 42 residential units, 32 of them being single units and 10 double units. Public amenities such as a restaurant, café/ bar, game room, library, fitness room and performance space are within the building to create a close nit community. These public amenities are open to the residents and public. The public amenities are placed closer to the front of the building to bring in community members as it will allow the residents to be social. Likewise, this building consists of two courtyards open to the outside, one is located at the entrance and the second courtyard is in the middle of the building.
A restaurant is located on this floor to help bring members from the community into the building. It also features a 180 degree view of Paderborn. For residents, a private library and a garden are located on the west side of the building. To the east, a staff breakroom is placed to create importance to the staff as much as the residents.
17 single units and 5 double units can be located on this floor. Public amenities such as a game room, bar, gathering space, music room, and cafe are available to bring the community closer.
There are 42 residential units, 32 of them being single units and 10 double units. Every unit contains a kitchenette, bathroom, living area and a full bed. Single units are studio based; the bathroom is the only enclosed space in the unit. The double units have a central kitchenette and dining area that separate both bedrooms. All units have access to natural light and built- in shelves.
Every residential entrance contains built in shelves where residents can place personal items. A change of floor material is placed at every residential entry way to break up the long corridor and signify the entrance to a unit.
This gathering space provides variety of seating, a game room, and a bar to promote communication between residents and the community.
The chest harness was inspired by my love for music festivals. I love how one can express themselves freely with flashy clothes while enjoying music. The materials used were holographic paper, a belt, and a necklace for a finishing piece. The polyhedrons were placed strategically to conform to the curves of the body.
