06 ‘Cantaram' Comeback

07 Bringing nature into hospitality for over 15 years

Introduction

Goa, the tiniest state on the western coast of India, boasts golden pristine beaches, palmfringed avenues, flavourful food, delicious Portuguese-influenced sweets, and warm, hospitable people. Also known as the Ibiza of India for its partying. A tropical paradise of flora and fauna, from the very famous 'almi' (mushrooms) endemic to its forests, that grow only on the red mud anthills, to the solar prawns that are fished immediately after the monsoons, Goa is unique. Tourists are also attracted to Goa for its cultural heritage - from the famous old Portuguese churches like Se Cathedral in Old Goa, the 16th Century Safa Masjid in Ponda and Shree Mangesha Temple in Mardol, the legendary Arvalem or Pandava Caves where the Pandavas of the Mahabharat fame lived, to its two unique festivalsCarnival and Shigmo. Goa plays host to many festivals - the International Film Festival of India that promotes cinema, the Serendipity Art Festival, Sunburn Music Festival, The Grape Escapade to name a few. To showcase this varied heritage of culture, art, tradition, food, and people, in 2015 ItsGoa was born. The main aim was to make it the premier portal for all things Goa. We were able to showcase Goa like never before. Soon our blog-based website transcended the virtual space, with the ItsGoa magazine – a sought-after resource for visitors to Goa from countries like Norway, Germany, UK, USA, UAE, etc.

Viola Rodrigues, founder of Vola Art Escape, is a leading Goan artist blending tradition and innovation, empowering emerging talent while creating impactful art across India and internationally.

Article by: Team ItsGoa Images by: Viola Rodrigues

In the vibrant world of Indian contemporary art, few names resonate as powerfully as Viola Rodrigues. A pioneer in Goa’s art scene, Viola has spent over 12 years redefining creativity through diverse mediums and groundbreaking projects. As the founder, director, and coordinator of Vola Art Escape, her journey is not just a story of personal success, but also a testament to how passion, perseverance, and vision can carve a lasting impact in the cultural landscape.

A Lifelong Passion for Art

Viola’s artistic journey began remarkably early. At just five years old, she was experimenting with sketching, doodling, and painting, instinctively exploring the fundamentals of colour and form. Her first artworks were inspired by fashion trends and garment design, a theme that hinted at her innate sense of style and visual storytelling. Her father, Vernon Rodrigues, recognized her raw talent early on and was instrumental in nurturing it. “My parents were always open-minded and persuasive and encouraged me to follow my goals to the fullest,” Viola reflects.

The Birth of ‘Vola Art Escape’

Channeling her growing expertise and love for painting, Viola launched Vola Art Escape, initially as an online gallery. This platform soon expanded into a physical space in Porvorim and eventually found its permanent home in Candolim, located prominently on the main road near the Candolim Health Centre. Today, the gallery stands as a cultural hub for tourists and art lovers, offering a rich spectrum of styles including abstracts, contemporary themes, religious motifs, detailed doodling, and other Indian artistic forms.

One of the gallery’s unique features is its interactive environment, with live artists available for custom portraiture and personalized pieces, turning each visit into a creative experience. Viola affectionately describes her gallery as “a piping hot cup of tea for each and everybody,” inviting all to find something that speaks to them.

Beyond the Gallery Walls

Viola doesn’t limit her creativity to gallery walls. She actively undertakes personal commissions for portraits, sculptures, and cultural murals. Taking a client-centric approach, she makes it a priority to understand each patron’s vision before creating a tailored masterpiece. Her preference for detailed and layered artwork is evident in every stroke.

Viola has a special love for oil painting and acrylics, with strong inclinations toward contemporary, abstract, and Renaissance art. She holds Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo in high regard, two artists whose influence continues to inspire her own stylistic evolution.

Pan-India Presence and International Reach

During the peak of the global pandemic in 2020, Viola achieved a remarkable feat, selling over 5,000 paintings across India, the Middle East, and Europe. This milestone established her not only as a regional talent but as a Pan-India and international artist with broad appeal.

Her clientele includes prominent names in the

Casino, Tito’s, Antares, Cohiba, and Ritz Classic. A prestigious client she holds close to her heart is Mr. Narayan Bandekar, who has displayed her artwork at The HQ Hotel in Vasco and remains a cherished mentor.

Landmark Project: Aiden by Best Western

One of Viola’s most recent and ambitious accomplishments was her collaboration with the American hotel chain "Aiden by Best Western", located in Vagator, North Goa. Over a span of just three months, she and her team created and installed custom murals for key areas such as the reception, bar, lounge, restaurant, staircases, and hallways.

Art for Every Space and Occasion

Vola Art Escape offers customized artworks for both residential and commercial clients. From personalized sketches, wall murals, and canvas paintings, to live caricatures and face painting for corporate events, private functions, and birthday parties, Viola ensures every piece is crafted to reflect the client's taste and budget.

Supporting the Next Generation

Beyond her personal success, Viola is deeply committed to fostering emerging talent in Goa. Her gallery offers internship opportunities for young artists eager to hone their craft. She also spearheaded the International Art Contest, which saw its successful second edition in 2020, recognizing budding artists from across India and overseas with certificates and cash prizes.

A Journey Fueled by Gratitude and Vision

Looking back, Viola expresses heartfelt gratitude to Anshuman Sharma and her parents, who played critical roles in encouraging her and helping navigate

the business side of art. “Connections and finances are a must for any artist,” she says. “But in my case, it was the unwavering support from my family and tech-savvy mentors that gave me the push I

Looking to the future, Viola aims to open one or two more galleries outside Goa, expanding her presence on the Pan-India level. She also envisions creating a dedicated interior design studio connected to art, offering a comprehensive suite of artistic services

A Mentor and a Movement

Viola Rodrigues is more than an artist, she is a movement in motion. As a role model to many young creatives, she offers not just inspiration but tangible support. “Join me and we will give you an opportunity to grow as an artist while giving proper exposure and a good platform to showcase your talents,” she says with passion. “Even a dish needs a pinch of salt. We will sculpt you to be an all-round artist.”

Malaika de Souza

Malaika de Souza is a soulful singer blending retro and modern styles, known for her emotional honesty, heartfelt performances, and commitment to authentic storytelling through music.

In a music industry that’s ever-changing and full of noise, Malaika de Souza stands out with her honest voice, retro-soul style, and deep emotional resonance. A singer grounded in heart, heritage, and hard work, Malaika is carving her own path through the modern music scene, one song, one show, and one story at a time.

A Musical Legacy Begins at Home

Music has always been more than a passion for Malaika, it's part of her identity. Growing up with a father who was an active musician, she was immersed in melody from a young age. Some of her earliest memories involve singing at home, and by the age of four, she was already humming along with a natural flair. Performing with her dad in a duo band gave her not only invaluable stage experience but also the unwavering support that shaped her confidence and artistic foundation.

approach to performance. The joyous nostalgia of ABBA also finds its way into her work, lending an upbeat charm to her stage presence.

Malaika’s music blends soul, pop, R&B, and retro influences, resulting in a sound that feels both classic and current. She’s heavily inspired by vocal powerhouses like Adele and Amy Winehouse, whose storytelling and emotional honesty guide her own

But beyond genre, what defines Malaika’s sound is its emotional clarity. Her songs explore themes of love, vulnerability, introspection, and personal growth, always with a conversational tone that makes listeners feel seen and heard.

Defining Moments and Memorable Performances

A key milestone in her journey came when she performed at a high-profile wedding in Mumbai, where one of the guests happened to be actor Suniel Shetty. The overwhelming response to her performance that night affirmed her connection with audiences and reminded her of music’s unifying power. Since then, she has carried that energy into every show, aiming to create authentic and intimate live experiences.

The Creative Process: From Inspiration to Execution

Malaika’s singing process is deeply instinctive. Ideas often come to her during everyday moments, a car ride, a passing thought, or the rhythm of the world around her. She captures these flashes of inspiration in voice notes, later developing them into full melodies and lyrics that mirror her reflections and emotions.

In the studio, she balances structure with spontaneity. Layering harmonies and textures, she lets emotion lead the way, ensuring that each recording feels like a lived experience rather than a polished product.

Balancing Passion with Practicality

Like many independent artists, Malaika juggles a demanding full-time job alongside her music career. While the balancing act is challenging, it’s also taught her discipline and resilience. There have been moments of stress, long days, and difficult clients, especially when managing performances and administrative hurdles, but through it all, she’s learned to protect her creative space and set clear boundaries.

The Power of Collaboration

Collaboration is a key part of Malaika’s growth as a musician. She values working with artists who bring openness and authenticity to the table. For her, it’s not just about combining talents, it’s about building meaningful connections that elevate the music itself.

Staying Grounded in a Changing Industry

Malaika approaches the evolving music landscape with curiosity and adaptability. She listens to emerging trends while remaining true to her core identity. She also recognises the importance of social media as a tool to connect with audiences on a personal level, though she admits consistency is still a work in progress. Still, her focus remains on being genuine and present, both online and off.

Looking Ahead: Original Music and Expanding Horizons

Currently, Malaika is working on her original music, a project that reflects her voice and vision more intimately than ever before. While details remain under wraps, she’s excited about releasing songs that represent her personal stories and emotional truths.

Upcoming live performances also continue to fuel her passion, offering her the chance to engage with listeners in real time.

Influences and Aspirations

Malaika draws inspiration from Adele’s vulnerability, Amy Winehouse’s boldness, and ABBA’s timeless charm—each shaping her sound and fueling her dedication to authenticity. But at the heart of it all is her father, whose passion for music continues to guide her artistic journey.

Looking ahead, Malaika envisions exploring new creative avenues—releasing original music, performing on bigger stages, and connecting with wider audiences through travel and collaboration. Her aim is to make music that moves, inspires, and brings comfort through shared experiences.

Final Notes

Malaika de Souza is not just a singer, she’s a storyteller, a connector, and a passionate voice for emotional honesty in music. With her blend of heartfelt lyrics, genre-spanning style, and unwavering authenticity, she continues to build a career that resonates beyond trends and into something timeless.

Jazz Academy: Nurturing a New Generation of Musicians in India

Nestled in the serene village of Guirim in North Goa, Goa Jazz Academy (GJA) is fast emerging as one of India’s most forward-thinking institutions for jazz and contemporary music education. With a foundation built on mentorship, performance, and inclusivity, the academy offers both structure and freedom allowing musicians to find their voice while staying rooted in the discipline of their craft.

A Unique Musical Ecosystem

Established in 2020, GJA has created a vibrant learning environment where hobbyists, professionals, and aspiring artists from diverse backgrounds come together. What began as a modest initiative has grown into a thriving, tight-knit community of learners from across Goa, India, and abroad. The academy’s founder, guitarist and educator Karan Khosla, believes Goa’s rich musical heritage from Portuguese brass bands to ballroom swing makes it the perfect home for such a school.

Student performances, August’24 at GJA, Guirim

More than just a classroom, GJA is a dynamic ecosystem. Students engage in weekly jam sessions, live showcases, and real-world collaborations, including performances at major events like the Serendipity Arts Festival and UNESCO’s International Jazz Day. These experiences help learners grow not only in skill but also in confidence and professionalism.

Curriculum Rooted in Performance

At the heart of GJA is its One Year Programme, a comprehensive course covering performance, theory, and improvisation. Students are immersed in ensemble playing from day one, fostering collaboration and stage experience early in their journey. The academy also offers private lessons, songwriting workshops, bootcamps, electives, and aural skills training. For those seeking formal certification, GJA aligns with the MTB grading system.

Instruction is available for a variety of instruments and disciplines, including guitar, bass, piano, drums, voice, and music production. Emphasis is placed on active learning, mentorship, and practical application, rather than rote memorization. This makes the academy accessible to musicians of all levels ranging in age from 9 to 70+ united by a shared commitment to growth.

A Teaching Philosophy That Listens First

Karan Khosla, who transitioned from a decade-long career in physics and consulting to full-time music, brings a deeply reflective and practical approach to teaching. Trained under renowned jazz guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg, his own journey informs his method—focused on listening, groove, and musical dialogue.

Karan emphasizes achievable goals, regular performance, and connecting lessons to each student’s interests. He believes the most rewarding moments come when students realize their own progress whether through a confident solo, an original composition, or joining a band for the first time.

Building a Culture of Access and Creativity

One of the academ ’s ongoing challenges is balancing high-qualit education with affordabilit and accessibilit . Yet GJA remains committed to its mission of democratizing music education while maintaining artistic integrit . The academ also pla s a role in reshaping how music is perceived in India not as an optional hobb , but as a serious, fulfilling pursuit.

Technological tools have also expanded GJA’s reach. With online lessons, digital collaboration tools, and remote performance feedback, the school bridges geographical boundaries, connecting students and instructors across cities and continents.

Looking Ahead Expanding Horizons

Goa Jazz Academ has bold plans for the future. New initiatives in development include international student exchanges, residenc programs, and interdisciplinar collaborations with filmmakers and designers. The team is also working to scale its online offerings, opening doors to more learners globall .

At its core, GJA is a space for musicians to explore jazz, groove-based music, and original expression in a wa that is immersive, inspiring, and deepl human. For those seeking to go be ond technical training and discover their own sound, GJA provides both the structure and the soul to make that journe meaningful.

Experiences Community

Meraki Experiences, founded by Isha Kher in Goa, offers soulful, creative, and nature-inspired events that foster connection, mindfulness, and community through personalized, immersive experiences beyond the ordinary.

by: Team ItsGoa Images by: Meraki Experiences

Article

In a world chasing instant gratification, Meraki Experiences dares to slow things down. Founded in 2023 by Isha Kher in Goa, Meraki was born from a simple yet powerful belief — that people are searching for deeper, more meaningful ways to spend their time. Not just another dinner or party, but shared moments of creativity, nature, and connection.

What began as a few intimate workshops soon transformed into a thriving community of locals, travelers, families, and even corporate teams — all drawn to Meraki's signature blend of creativity, culture, and calm.

A Name with a Soul

The word Meraki — Greek for doing something with soul, creativity, or love — perfectly captures the essence of what Isha envisioned. Whether it’s neon painting under UV lights, kayaking beneath a full moon, or blending your own fragrance on a rooftop, each experience is designed to leave both a memory

Not a Straight Path, But a Purposeful One

Isha didn’t plan to become an experience curator. Her journey evolved naturally from a personal desire to try new things and a talent for bringing people together. One idea sparked another, and slowly, her passion matured into a purposeful platform — one focused on crafting moments that feel personal, playful, and impactful.

Curating Connection Through Art, Food & Nature

Meraki offers a carefully curated mix of art-based workshops, culinary explorations, and immersive outdoor adventures. A weekend could include handbuilding pottery over a pint, sushi-making with a local chef, or painting with glow-in-the-dark colors under black light. Outdoors, the brand takes participants kayaking through mangrove forests, exploring bio-luminescent night trails, or stargazing on hidden Goan plateaus. Celebrations like birthdays, proposals, and bachelorettes are given Meraki’s signature touch — fully personalized and

Highlights That Left a Mark

Among the many memorable events, Pots & Pints stands out. The energy was electric — people of all ages, covered in clay and laughter, momentarily forgetting their phones and reconnecting with the present. Another standout moment? A bioluminescent forest trail where families discovered glow-in-the-dark fungi and rare frogs, experiencing a different kind of magic under the trees.

Curation That Feels Like Storytelling

The process of creating a Meraki experience starts with one question: how should someone feel by the end of it? Calm? Curious? Joyful? From there, every detail — the facilitator, location, music, lighting, materials — is chosen with intention. Events are never templated; each one is built from scratch, like a short story told through atmosphere and activity.

Local Roots, Global Vision

Goa, with its contrasts of stillness and vibrancy, was the natural choice for Meraki’s home base. It’s where Isha grew up, and where she saw a gap — a lack of soulful activities for both locals and new residents.

Meraki also collaborates with Goa’s rich creative community, artists, chefs, bartenders, and outdoor guides — ensuring every event is anchored in local talent and authenticity. While Meraki doesn’t always focus directly on heritage, it celebrates and supports it through collaborations, pop-ups, and partnerships.

Community, Not Just Customers

The response has been overwhelming. Locals, settlers, and even repeat tourists have embraced Meraki as more than a one-time experience.

People return with friends, families, partners, and teammates — and often, with stories of connection. Proposals, new friendships, birthday surprises — Meraki has quietly become the setting for many meaningful moments.

pots and pints

The Team Behind the Magic

Meraki is powered by a close-knit core team handling operations, marketing, and event execution. But much of its spark comes from collaborations with facilitators who bring their unique flair and energy to each session. Some have become recurring partners; others are one-time wonders — but all contribute to Meraki’s ever-evolving tapestry.

Challenges and Cultural Shifts

One of the biggest challenges Meraki faces is shifting people’s mindset. Many still see workshops as skill-building rather than joy-seeking. Meraki gently pushes back on that, promoting a recreational mindset where the goal isn’t perfection, but presence. Logistically, Goa’s weather and infrastructure can be unpredictable. But the magic of

Milestones and Future Horizons

From a few weekend workshops to hosting hundreds of events and collaborating with global brands like Procter & Gamble, Meraki’s journey has been nothing short of inspiring. Among the proudest milestones are moments that don’t show up in numbers — like watching strangers leave as friends.

As for the future? While Goa remains its heart, Meraki is looking outward. Plans are underway to take the brand to new cities, create destination popups, and partner with festivals and community spaces across India — all while preserving the warmth and authenticity that define it.

A Different Kind of Goa

For those visiting Goa in search of something more than beaches and parties, Meraki offers a welcome alternative. It’s a chance to reconnect — with craft, with nature, with others, and most importantly, with oneself. In a time when experiences are often rushed or curated for the ’gram, Meraki is quietly redefining what it means to truly engage — with soul, creativity, and a whole lot of heart.

Elton Luis content

Elton Luis is a Goan digital creator known for his humorous reels, relatable vlogs, and raw storytelling, blending local culture with originality to entertain and connect with a growing audience.

Article by: Team ItsGoa Images by: Elton Luis

In a world where digital content often feels like a blur of trends and templates, Elton Luis stands out not just as a creator, but as a storyteller, a cultural voice, and a magnetic entertainer. With a unique blend of Goan flavor, sharp wit, and relatable chaos, Elton has carved his niche in the fast-evolving world of short-form content. From random vlogs filmed in college to viral reels that stop the scroll, his journey is as unconventional as it is inspiring.

The Beginning: From Vlogs to Viral

Elton’s creative journey began during his college years. What started as casual vlogging turned into a deeper passion when people began resonating with his humor and authenticity. His natural storytelling ability, love for making people laugh, and knack for turning everyday chaos into content led him organically into the world of Instagram Reels.

When reels exploded on the scene, the short, snappy format proved to be a perfect match for Elton’s fast-paced energy and comedic timing. “My niche kind of found me,” he says. “I blended humor, Goan culture, and real-life madness and it just clicked.”

What He Loves to Create

For Elton, two content formats stand out: mini vlogs and comic sketches. While vlogs let him showcase everyday life with a humorous twist, sketches allow him to dive into local quirks, trending topics, and eccentric characters. Both formats give him creative freedom and allow his audience to see different sides of him, sometimes roasted, sometimes raw, but always real.

Inside His Creative Process

Elton’s content creation doesn’t follow a rigid script. Inspiration strikes in the most unexpected moments while walking, eating, or doom-scrolling through memes. Once an idea lands, he quickly jots it down, shoots without overthinking, and edits tightly with a focus on fast-paced humor, meme elements, and strong hooks in the first few seconds. His mantra? Raw over perfect always.

Platform Game: Instagram & YouTube

Elton’s primary focus is on Instagram and YouTube, each with a distinct strategy. On Instagram, he delivers short-form, high-energy content through reels, stories, and collaborations. YouTube, on the other hand, is where his longer vlogs and structured narratives live. Rather than re-purposing the same content, Elton treats each platform like a different stage tailored to fit the tone and rhythm of its audience.

Tools That Power His Creativity

Behind the fun and chaos is a toolkit that helps bring Elton’s ideas to life. He relies on Adobe Premiere Pro and VN for editing, Canva for thumbnails, and a steady mix of local memes, trending audio clips, and personal touches from Goan life. Yet, the real differentiator is his instinct: “If it makes me laugh or smile, I know it’ll connect.”

Trends With a Twist

While many creators chase the latest trend blindly, Elton takes a more thoughtful approach. He stays plugged into what’s buzzing, but filters everything through one key question: “Can I give this a Goan spin?” If the answer is yes, the trend gets reimagined in his world—with his humor, his voice, and his unique cultural lens. The result? Content that feels familiar but unmistakably Elton.

When Reels Go Viral

One reel changed everything. It crossed 200,000 views, and suddenly, Elton’s notifications exploded. The impact went beyond numbers; he started receiving brand offers, invitations for collaborations, and recognition from strangers at events and cafés. “That’s when I felt like, okay, we’re getting somewhere,” he recalls.

Among his most popular videos are wedding crash vlogs and roast-style reels, loved for their unpredictability and relatability. Audiences connect with the honesty, boldness, and unfiltered humor qualities that give his content its unique punch.

the

Audience

Elton treats his followers not as numbers, but as part of his extended circle. He replies to DMs, reacts to stories, reads comments obsessively, and regularly involves his community in polls and feedback sessions.

Many of his best ideas come from suggestions or playful jabs from his own fans. Their involvement isn’t just welcome, it's integral.

Challenges Behind the Scenes

Despite the energy and laughter, content creation isn’t without its hurdles. Creative blocks and the pressure to outperform his last post are constant battles. Views can dip, edits can drag, and self-doubt creeps in. But for Elton, the remedy lies in returning to the basics: fun and authenticity. That’s what got him started, and that’s what keeps him going.

Balancing Creativity and Growth

Navigating between artistic expression and algorithm-friendly content is a balancing act. Elton’s strategy is simple: give one video to the algorithm gods and the next to his creative instincts. That rhythm allows him to stay true to his vision while still reaching wider audiences. “I don’t want to become a content robot,” he says. “Keeping both myself and my audience excited is the real win.”

Looking Ahead: The Bigger Picture

Elton’s long-term vision goes beyond digital screens. He’s working on sharpening his skills in comedy and music, with dreams of stepping onto bigger stages be it live performances, shows, or even a series someday. His content will continue to evolve, but the essence will remain: a seamless blend of humor, storytelling, and Goan culture, served with unapologetic originality.

From college vlogger to one of Goa’s most recognizable digital creators, Elton Luis proves that storytelling doesn’t need a script just the right voice, a bold heart, and a little bit of chaos. And he’s just getting started.

Communicare Trust’s ‘Cantaram for the Community’ reconnects youth with Goa’s musical and cultural roots, showcasing the evolution of music while preserving heritage through concerts, stories, and community engagement.

Article & Images by: Team ItsGoa

~ 'Cantaram for the Community' student concerts will revive memories of legends like C. Alvares, Joe Rose, Fernand, Cabral and Mendes.

~ The student concerts will be held at Carmel College, Nuvem, on August 8 at 10:00am and at St Xavier’s College, Mapusa, on August 12 at 10:00am.

Students in Goa will soon get a chance to engage with one of the state’s richest musical traditions — cantaram — through twin campus concerts organised by Dona Paula-based Communicare Trust as part of its 20-year anniversary campaign.

Titled 'Cantaram for the Community,' the musical outreach initiative is designed to reintroduce college-going youth to the familiar-yet-forgotten melodies of classic Konkani music, played on vinyl and brought to life through two live performances in the state’s leading educational institutions.

By blending live performances with archival vinyl recordings, the concerts will bring alive the stories and sounds of some of Goa’s most influential composers and singers, like C. Alvares, Joe Rose, Frank Fernand, Ophelia Cabral and Antonette Mendes, many of whom are now unfamiliar to younger generations.

The events will feature live music by Entre Nós, a versatile ensemble led by Omar de Loiola Pereira with Nadia Rebelo and Ginelle Fernandes on vocals. Their setlist includes rare compositions and beloved classics, alternating with carefully curated vinyl sets by record selector, Art Deco researcher and vinyl record collector Leaxan Freitas. These vinyl segments will not only introduce young audiences to the rich textures of analogue sound, but also trace the evolution of how Goans consumed music through time; from shellac discs and gramophones to digital platforms.

Photos, lyrics and biographical stories will accompany the performances, making the experience both musical and educational. The first edition of 'Cantaram for the Community' will take place at Carmel College, Nuvem, on August 8 at 10:00am for students from South Goa. The second will be held at St Xavier’s College, Mapusa, on August 12 at 10:00am for students from North Goa.

Manager at Communicare Trust Nalini Elvino de Sousa said, “Communicare has long engaged with music and we realised many children today have never seen vinyl, tapes or shellac discs. ‘Cantaram for the Community’ aims to show how music and technology evolved, from shellac to vinyl to digital, while reconnecting youth with Goa’s cultural roots. Many of the original composers are no longer with us, but we’re in touch with their families, who often share lyrics and stories that we incorporate into the concerts to honour their legacy.” Cantaram is an art form that embodies the essence of Goa in its rhythm and through its lyrics, one can learn a great deal about Goa’s culture and heritage, De Sousa further said.

For the past 20 years, Communicare Trust has been passionately committed towards preserving languages and culture through a wide range of programmes, events and workshops. The 'Cantaram for the Community' programme is supported by the Maria Crescencia Menezes Memorial Educational Trust, which has championed Communicare’s work over the years.

For over 15 years, Ramchandra Patil has quietly transformed the way guests experience the outdoors across some of IHCL’s most celebrated properties in Goa. As a dedicated Green Spaces Specialist, his work doesn’t just lie in landscaping—it lies in creating natural sanctuaries that reflect the soul of the land, nurture biodiversity, and elevate the guest experience in subtle but unforgettable ways.

“What I love most about my job is the harmony it creates between people and nature,” he says. “Whether it's transforming green spaces or simply watching birds take refuge in the trees we’ve planted, it’s a daily reminder that we’re contributing to something bigger.”

Ramchandra has played a pivotal role in shaping the verdant environments at Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Goa, Taj Holiday Village Resort & Spa, Sinquerim, and Taj Cidade de Goa Heritage, Dona Paula. Each property comes with its own terrain, guest demographic, and design sensibility—but Ramchandra’s approach always begins with the same principle: Go local.

Using native, hardy shrubs and trees that thrive in the Goan climate, Ramchandra ensures that every green space is sustainable, low-maintenance, and rooted in the region’s biodiversity. These choices not only support local ecosystems but also allow for cost-effective upkeep and year-round greenery.

Yet, science is only half the story. A trained horticulturist with an artist’s eye, Ramchandra creates layered outdoor experiences that speak to all the senses. He designs shaded nooks with textured foliage, fragrant paths lined with frangipani, and vibrant bursts of bougainvillea that echo the architectural hues of Goa.

“Balancing beauty and practicality is key in a hotel setting,” he explains. “We want the landscapes to be self-sustaining, but also emotionally resonant— spaces where families can picnic under the trees or where guests can pause to admire a quiet bloom.”

Ramchandra’s personal favourites are telling of his design philosophy. The graceful coconut palm, Goa’s most iconic tree, always finds a home in his

landscapes. He swears by yellow and pink frangipani for their subtle perfume, Rangoon creepers for their evening drama, and bougainvillea for their vibrancy and resilience. Plants like heliconia and bird of paradise serve double duty, flourishing outdoors and then making their way into lobby arrangements and guest area décor.

But perhaps the most admired of his creations are the bonsai displays. Positioned in meeting rooms, suites, and even boardrooms, these miniature trees— shaped from ficus, jade, tamarind, neem, bougainvillea—often stop guests in their tracks.

“Even when guests don’t know the names, they’re drawn to the detail and the energy. Bonsai is a reflection of patience, skill, and respect for nature. It also showcases the technical expertise of our horticulture team.”

Beyond ornamentals, Ramchandra has also been instrumental in setting up edible gardens across IHCL’s Goa resorts. From a thriving Thai herb garden at Taj Holiday Village that supports its specialty restaurant Banyan Tree, to the seasonal kitchen gardens at Taj Exotica and Cidade de Goa Heritage, his green spaces also nourish the kitchens. These gardens are aligned with the group’s Vocal for Local ethos—ensuring fresh, hyperlocal produce makes its way to the guest’s plate.

Looking ahead, Ramchandra’s aspirations are equally rooted in purpose. If given a chance to switch roles for a day, he would choose to be a Training Manager —so he could educate new recruits on sustainable landscaping and the importance of aligning hospitality with nature.

“Through training, I’d be able to reach team members early in their journey,” he says. “It’s the perfect moment to instill green thinking—not just about plants, but about creating harmony with birds, animals, and the entire ecosystem.”

Ramchandra’s work may often lie in the background, but the peace, beauty, and balance he brings to IHCL Goa properties are felt by every guest who walks through a garden, pauses at a bonsai, or breathes in the scent of a flowering path. His legacy, quite literally, grows every day.
