OUTRE IN COLLABORATION WITH ADITYA JAGDALE DIRECTOR’S CHOICE AWARD, HOME COMPETITION 2020 JOHN ENRIGHT VERTICAL STUDIO, SCI-ARC FALL 2020

The home, along with its elements is deemed as one’s most comfortable environment, where interactions between the occupants and the elements occur repetitively over the span of one’s time in it. Therefore, routinary interactions with the architecture and the objects of the home get embedded in one’s subconscious, rendering usages of domestic elements nearly thoughtless. This is reinforced when the spatial distinction between one’s work and home is forcibly blurred due to the pandemic. The project, therefore, starts as an investigation of how the architecture of the home has become a part of one’s background, especially in the age of digital invasion.

The project then responds by using one’s subconscious relationship to the background against itself. Through borderline eccentric/absurd architectural upcycling of pre-existing elements and spaces, the “Home” is pulled out of one’s subconscious routine associated with how it was once used. By this questioning of the use or misuse of the existing architectural language of the “Home”, we simultaneously question those specific elements as to their function and meaning, and attempt to create an architecture that outlasts strict definitions, and engages beyond rote functionality.

COALESCENCE IN COLLABORATION WITH ADITYA JAGDALE SEMI-FINALIST ENTRY, CAMBODIA REMOTE HIDEOUT HUT COMPETITION JOHN ENRIGHT VERTICAL STUDIO, SCI-ARC FALL 2020

This project proposes to examine the personal spaces of the Cambodian yoga huts through the typologies of larger places of worship, particularly Hindu temples. Inspired by the organizational layout of these temples, this project aims to provide each hut user with their very own sacred sanctuary.

This hermitage reappropriates the major components of the temple to that of the hideout- The Mandapa tur ns into a porch - an exposed gathering space. The Antarala then becomes a hallway that connects the porch and transepts that hold secondary programs like bathroom and storage spac e to the womb (or sanctum sanctorum) of the temple, where one sleeps.

The circumambulation (Pradakshina) wraps around the womb and leads up to a terrace that coinc ides with the womb, that is this time is exposed to nature, where one performs yoga.

The use of cladded marble reinforces the monumentality of the entity, and at the same time critiques its symmetry through the apertures and gaps between them, which are brought to life through the symmetrical geometry of the massing itself.

Through reappropriating programmatic elements of a sacred typology to that of a yoga hut , it reinforces the sacredness of the individua l occupant.

M A K E I T FA S T, A N D C H E A P IN COLLABORATION WITH ADITYA JAGDALE SENEGAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COMPETITION JOHN ENRIGHT VERTICAL STUDIO, SCI-ARC FALL 2020

Aiming to create a rapidly deployable and cost-efficient system of classroom desi gn for Senegal, this project utilizes twenty-foot-long modular shipping containers to both securely house accessory spaces of the program, and to form structural walls that both define the classroom spaces and support the roof structures. Shipping containers of this size are readily available, can be trucked to the site at a reasonable cost, and will reduce construction time immensely. Supported on simple foundations, the now permanent containers support a lightweight roof structure and rooftop gardens.

The proposal preserves the central courty ard space with the tree as a spatial ligature. As a result, the main spaces are arranged on the periphery of the site. In this arrangement, not only do the shipping containers inhabit small programs like offices, the kitchen, and the library, but the open, interstitial spaces between the pockets of the program give forth to the main events of the building - the classrooms. These pre-existing entities also act as pre-made structural members which the trusses and roofs are attached to. By extracting the structural and spatial potentials of shipping containers, we are reducing portions of our budget allocated for structural elements and walls.

In addition to implementing an easy way of construction that is structurally sound while preserving the key characteristics of the site to the greatest extent, our proposal is mindful of the difficulties towards attracting qualified teachers to Senegal. Through our use of shipping containers as modular spatial elements, each teacher is offered with his/her own individual on-site living space. This then becomes an additional incentive for teachers and volunteers to take part in educating Senegal’s youth. The containers also support small vegetable small gardens, which can be used towards educating the children on simple agriculture.

FOR CHILDREN, BY CHILDREN INDIVIDUAL PROJECT SCI-ARC GRADUATE THESIS 2021 THESIS ADVISOR _ ANNA NEIM ARK

As architectural students, we are accustomed to referencing and drawing inspiration from works within the architectural canon and works produced with a visible degree of professional training when starting an architectural project. While these works offer professional knowledge about form, composition, and structure, they signal operations within and are restricted by the rules of professional architectural practices. These rulesets such as structure, building height and corridor width shape our understanding of the built environment, and explorations of new architectural expressions occur within the se implicit and explicit frameworks, where architectural elements serve perceivable functions.

In seek of a potential starting point for architectural projects that reside outside the common playing fields familiar to architects that present opportunities for new architectural expressions, also aiming to question our presumed understanding of architectural elements, children’s art was chosen as the primary source of inspiration through extracting and reinterpreting elements such as attachments, imprecise mullions, multiple grounds, facade textures and thick cap.

This thesis questi ons the common starting point of architectural projects; while exploring t he intersection of architectural knowledge, architectural technologies, and the untrained abstractions of the built environment. Drawing on the graphic and formal characteristics of children’s drawings, artworks produced without architectural expertise become sources of inspiration for architects and designers while serving as origins and catalogs of new architectural expressions.
