Dear Itineris Friends and Families, This past year was unprecedented in so many ways.   We began 2020 with great anticipation. It was the 10th anniversary of our founding and we were looking forward to acknowledging those who were instrumental to our successes and celebrating the new decade ahead. As with the rest of the world, the COVID-19 pandemic has had farreaching effects that no one could have anticipated. Here at Itineris, for the first time in our history, we made the gut-wrenching decision to suspend onsite supports for our clients and furlough more than100 staff members. Undeterred, we forged ahead. We were determined to stay connected and to provide resources and support as the challenges created by schedule disruptions and routine changes are so often manifested in the autism community. Our staff began the hard work of pivoting to virtual classes, initially to a pilot group, which has now reached over 100 clients through nearly 50 virtual classes offered daily. The resiliency and perseverance of our dedicated staff has been awe-inspiring, providing a sense of community and structure for our clients, many of whom have been thriving in the virtual world. For those clients who are best served in person, we also began offering in-home meaningful day and personal supports. This year, more than ever, I cannot stress the significance of your support. It has impacted our amazing clients and their ever-flexible families in ways that will extend far beyond 2020. Our donors and the philanthropic community have wrapped their arms around non-profits to step up and anticipate many of the needs created by the tremendous revenue losses this year. While our work may not look the same, we are developing new and better ways to support our clients – be it helping them navigate their essential in-person jobs, preparing them for future workplace dynamics or keeping them connected socially. As we move forward and face our new reality, as always, we feel optimistic and hopeful. We remain relentlessly focused on our mission of empowering adults on the autism spectrum to live meaningful lives, throughout their lifespan. The need for our services continues to grow and the need to increase awareness and acceptance in neurodiversity remains critical. We are excited and hard at work planning to reimagine what an eventual return will look like. Planning for the logistical, transitional and compliance requirements needed to provide a safe return to in person programming must be thoughtful and intentional. There is still so much to be done. Thank you again for supporting and believing in us and our mission. Here’s to the next decade on our amazing journey! With a grateful heart, Ami Taubenfeld, Mom, Co-Founder, and Executive Director

STAYING CONNECTED

Pivot to Virtual Classes When our on-site facility closed in mid-March, we immediately began our transition to the new virtual world. We altered our class curricula so they could be taught online utilizing individualized teaching strategies, brought back furloughed staff and began enrolling clients in our virtual programs. Itineris was determined to stay connected and provide a sense of structure by keeping our clients engaged and interacting with their peers amidst the uncertainty of the pandemic. Today, we offer nearly 50 classes daily, maintaining pre-pandemic client to staff ratios, while continuing to address client-centered goals and longer-term planning. Our classes range from work readiness, social skills and independent living to client-requested classes such as manga and current events.

DURING COVID In-home Supports For those clients who are best served in person, we offer select in-home or virtual meaningful day, pod learning, personal supports, and behavioral support services. While many of our clients have thrived in the virtual environment, other clients do best with more individualized lessons. We are so thankful for the flexibility of our families and staff as we adapt to new health and sanitation protocols to enable this mode of connecting. We also provide materials to families, allowing them to continue programs and supports at home, which can be supplemented through individualized virtual meetings to work on social and emotional skills.

Professional Development of Direct Support Professionals The continuation of services is only possible through the tireless efforts of our dedicated Direct Support Professionals. Itineris’ amazing staff successfully shifted from hands-on face to face teaching to virtual programming while adapting to significant work and personal changes. We continue to provide professional development with an emphasis on increasing our effectiveness in the virtual world as well as providing our staff with the forums to share barriers and areas of need in order to keep our clients learning and feeling connected through the pandemic. This continued learning also allows our clients to practice essential skills such as advocacy and communication.

STAYING CONNECTED “Faced with a major crisis, Itineris never flinched. Almost overnight, the Program team created an online version of Itineris. Seeing friends and mentors every day has been a source of comfort and reassurance for my son Noah, who’s a new client to Itineris, and has allowed him to keep working toward his goals.” Peter K, Former board president and parent

Continuation of Workforce Development Our Workforce Development team continues to support our essential worker clients who remain employed during the pandemic. The format of on-site job coaching for clients and training for our employer partners has been adjusted, but we are nonetheless focused on providing the necessary resources to equip our partners with the skills needed to succeed. We also continue to work with those clients who will one day be re-entering the workplace through workplace scenario courses and career readiness skills.

DURING COVID Reopening and Reimagining the Future We are looking forward to the day when we can safely reopen The Pointe at Rockrose for in-person learning. We are evaluating hybrid options and various scenarios for how we will reopen while continuing to meet CDC regulations, OSHA requirements, and Maryland compliance mandates and have worked to reconfigure our physical spaces. While the COVID-19 pandemic created many challenges for us here at Itineris and new obstacles for our clients and their families, we are hopeful that the lessons learned during the pandemic will allow us to serve more clients, some virtually, and in an improved way. The need for Itineris’ services only continues to grow. We are eagerly looking forward to the launch of our first community living program later this year as we pursue paths to meaningful employment, community engagement and dignity of choice for adults on the autism spectrum. With the support of our clients and their families, our dedicated staff and our donors and allies, we are excited for what the future holds.

HOT NIGHT FOR AUTISM

The 2020 Hot Night for Autism Tenth Anniversary Celebration was a huge success thanks to our dedicated supporters who always come through for Itineris! Even though this was an unusual year and our first virtual event, we exceeded our goal and the event raised more money than ever before! With a generous match, we raised more than $107,000 the night of our event and a total of $308,000 from the event to support our clients. Hot Night for Autism is our biggest fundraiser of the year and provides critical funding to support the services we provide for our clients. The outpouring of support reminds us of what a wonderful community we are a part of.

THREE-YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN While pivoting to adapt and serve our clients with meaning and purpose this past year, we have not lost sight of the strategic priorities and refreshed mission and vision we articulated in 2019. As we further develop our capacity to strengthen our impact on the autism community, our three-year strategic plan helps us prioritize our growth strategy and serves as a road map for the future as we continue on our path to improve, innovate and reimagine the future of Itineris. In the past year, Itineris has focused on three key areas of our strategic plan:

Organizational & Programming Excellence Developing our infrastructure, human capital and financial resources to support high-quality lifelong person-centered programs. Setting and implementing the highest standards of excellence at Itineris.

1

Expansion Via Community Living

2

Creating a welcoming and inclusive home for Itineris clients and pursuing new ways to provide clients with opportunities to live rich and meaningful lives through innovative approaches.

Thought Leadership to Elevate Awareness & Advocacy Sharing our unique expertise in the autism community with other providers and families to create meaningful days and lives for more individuals on the autism spectrum.

3

An important aspect of our strategic plan is to discover, dream and plan for the next waypoints for our future beyond three years, be it the establishment of a second Itineris location, community living program or replication of the Itineris program model, expanding our virtual programming, among other possibilities. With your support, we imagine a world more accepting and understanding of neurodiversity as a foundation to provide meaningful work and community engagement for our clients.

COMMUNITY Through funding and partnership with the Gutierrez Memorial Fund the Itineris Rockrose Park Gateway Project was constructed with handmade mosaic tiles depicting Earth, Air, Fire, and Water, created by Itineris clients and local residents. The Gateway welcomes clients and neighbors into the community park we so enjoy.

Itineris clients helped Pathfinders for Autism celebrate their 20th birthday by creating Valentine notes for their Heart Project.

Itineris clients were honored to be part of a family day at Miriam House. Our very talented clients performed for staff, residents and families.

HAPPENINGS Volunteers from Price Waterhouse Cooper spent the day with Itineris clients creating thank you cards and delivered them to Employer and Community Partners to show our gratitude for their support and partnership.

Itineris’ Holiday Craft Bazaar featured the artwork of talented Itineris clients and more than 20 local artist. The Bazaar was a great way to support Itineris clients while shopping local!
