Editors Voice Welcome back to Original-ITF! We said that things are going to change in future issues of our magazine and stated that we are going take our magazine to another level with regards to content. We have been busy contacting writers from all fields of sports science and hope that we will soon have many regular features ready to aid your training and learning. We do our best to stay away from the bickering of those in the I.T.F. There have been many articles to date that we have refused due to negativity - all seems to be directed at one I.T.F., which is sad to see. We are pleased with our steady growth of readers which tends to float between 6000 to 9000 reads a issue. Our magazine is NOT devoted to I.T.F. T.K.D., hence the sudden change to topics like science and the information on sports injuries of the body. We ask that if you want something covered in future, simply e-mail and let us know. You can also go to our web site at www.original-itf.co.uk. Paul has stepped down as a editor, but is now doing a role less time consuming as he wants to remain with us. LONDON OPENS

2010

The London Opens 2010, one of the U.K.’s biggest Tae Kwon Do events, was held on the 18th July. This event had over 350 competitors, with guest athletes coming from the U.K., Ireland, Wales, India and Pakistan. Hosts Dave and Jan Norris (U.K.T.A.) have held the event for over 10 years and seen it grow each year. This year, the arena was fully matted for the first time, which meant the event had 6 nine by nine metre I.T.F. rings. The rules were I.T.F., so the many I.T.F. styles were kept happy. This year saw groups such as U.C.T., S.T.A., Gassors T.K.D. and the U.K.T.U. attend for the first time. The tournament kicked off with officials being assigned to seniors of 5th Degree and above, who would run a ring for the host. The patterns section kicked off for the juniors. The pace was set, as everyone witnessed some very high standards from children as young as 5 years old up to 12 years old. The children all had smiles on the faces, as they won their spoils from this

event. The morning session ran very smoothly with hardly any problems, apart from the odd complaint from parents when their child was outsmarted by a more competent competitor. Looking across the arena, the referees were very versed in their skills, making sure fair play was exercised at the event and that all competitors lived by the tenets of the art. In the adults and teens section, we saw some outstanding fighters that made light work of executing some great patterns which were pristine in technique and extremely powerful. The host looked after all officials in the form of a great buffet. It has to be said, some in the U.K. do not do this, which is poor hospitality never the less, the day was a great one, well worth taking part in. Dave and Jan would like to extend their thanks to all competitors that took part in the event, especially the officials who gave up their time to tirelessly ensure everyone won their spoils fairly. I.T.F. DELEGATION VISITS THE SPORT ACCORD terms of the Taekwon-Do and Martial-Art activities were exchanged. Dr. Hein Verbruggen explained in detail the function of Sport Accord and assured the delegation that he would be pleased to support the ITF Taekwon-Do in the future. Following the ITF President's introduction of the delegation members to Dr. Hein Verbrug- gen, every member spoke to him of the Taekwon-Do history and the ITF activities all over the world which he found enlightening. As having already informed the members, the I.T.F. Delegation paid a visit to the Sport Accord Headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, and held the productive talks with Dr. Hein rd Verbruggen, the Sport Accord President, on 23 Jun. 2010.

The delegation handed the documentary files over to the Sport Accord Secretary Ms. Ricarda Ettlin who is in charge of this project. She was also presented with a complete set of Taekwon-Do Encyclopaedias.

The ITF delegation was composed of President Prof. & Dr. Chang Ung, Vice President Prof. Dr. Dato, GM Leong Wai Meng, Executive Director General Master Ri Yong Son, Treasurer Mr Kim Chol Gyu, EITF President Senior Master Anto Nobilo, ITF EB Member Master Augustus Mitchell and Senior Master Michael Prewett, ITF Spokesperson. 6TH MEMORIAL CUP TOURNAMENT FOR GEN. CHOI HONG HI HELD IN NEPAL The historical National Championship of th

Nepal I.T.F., the 6 Memorial Cup Tournament for Gen. Choi Hong Hi, has successfully been concluded at the Eastern part of Nepal, Shahid Stadium in Biratnagar,

on 14-15 Jun. 2010. Prior to the beginning of the Championship, all players, guests, instructors, officials and spectators have bowed to Gen. Choi Hong Hi, the Founder of Taekwon-Do, and made one minute silent respect to the Father of Taekwon-Do.

The Medals, Trophy and Certificates were distributed to all winners by Mr. Pitambar Timilsina, Mr. Khadaga Bahadur Ranabhat (Executive Member of National Sports Council) and Mr. Krishna Bahahdur Balal (President of Nepal ITF). th th PREPARATION FOR THE 9 JUNIOR & 4 VETERAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP GOES WELL The ITF HQ sent the ITF Delegation comprised of Senior Master Michael Prewett, the Chairman of EITF Umpire Committee, and Mr. Ladislav Burian, the Chairman of EITF th Tournament Committee, to Minsk, Belarus from 28 to th 30 May 2010 for the collaboration and assistance over the works of the Organizing Committee for the said Championship. Master Yuri Kalashnikov, the ITF Vice President, and Mr. Ivan Rajtr from Czech joined this team and worked together with the members of Organizing Committee during the weekend. The delegation had a fruitful meeting with the Sports Minister of Belarus and looked around the Stadium, the venue for the Technical & Umpire Seminar and Hotels in the periods of their stay in Minsk and held the constructive

I.T.F. SEMINAR TAKES PLACE IN BEIJING and coped with the technical matters raised from the members over the world. The I.T.F. Technical Committee presided over this seminar and all participants were very happy with it. The report on the key points dealt with during the seminar would be made by Senior Master Hwang Ho Yong, the Chairman of I.T.F. Technical Committee, and delivered to the members in time of the Technical & Umpire Seminar scheduled in Minsk, Belarus on 2122 Aug. this year. According to the decision of the I.T.F. Executive Board, the Special Seminar for 8th Dan and up was ever held in the Remin University of China on 8-11 Apr. this year. 4 Grand Masters and 34 Senior Masters under I.T.F. participated in this historical seminar

The I.T.F. HQ, based on the suggestions from the Masters including the attendees, would host such a seminar every year in the different countries and open to all the Senior Masters and NGB Leaders who wish to attend.

5TH ASIAN CHAMPIONSHIP BRINGS THE DUE SUCCESS th

The 5 Asian Taekwon-Do Championship took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan on 24-28 Apr. this year. This event was successfully held under the participation of 350 participants from 18 countries of the Asian Continent. th

The Asian Taekwon-Do Federation held the 5 ATF Congress during this Championship and produced the crucial decisions to make ATF stronger and ITF TaekwonDo more popular in these areas. All the participants shared the friendship and fellowship during the competitions and expressed their unwavering support to ITF, the Legacy of Gen. Choi Hong Hi.

The seminar fee is Euro 50.00 per participants and the Hotel Accommodations for 2 days must be paid by the participants.

I.T.F. TRADEMARKS

In Europe Seems that the trademark issue of the I.T.F. logo in the U.K. has come to the forefront of U.K. politics once again. Rumours are now circulating that one group has tried to register the I.T.F. logo, despite knowing that this trademark is already registered to Mr. Anthony Williams (former U.K.T.A. Secretary General for 10 years) in the U.K.

Again, we were informed if the I.T.F. logo looks like the one trademarked, he could start legal proceedings against the company.

We then asked Mr. Williams why many companies have used the logo since the registration and have not been taken to task smiling, he stated “I have no intention of chasing people through the courts. As it is an International logo, I do not have the time or money. However, I will challenge anyone that tries to misuse it and try to make a claim to the rights, as it was trademarked by me”.

Hwang Kwang Sung Grandmaster Hwang was born in Teagu Korea. Taegu is the third largest city south of the 38th parallel, and is south east of Seoul and north of Busan. At the age of eleven, he started his martial arts training. After graduating with a degree in Political Science from KyungPook National University he joined the Republic of Korean Army as a commissioned officer in 1964. Serving as a Korean Airborne and Ranger officer and serving his country in Vietnam. He was stationed in Saigon, Chu Ly, and several others. He taught Taekwon-Do to the Korean Tiger Division, the Korean Army, the US Army and the US Marines along with the Vietnamese Army. Receiving commendation medals from Korea and Vietnam. 1970 marked his retirement from the ROK Army as a Captain, and Service Company Commander of the 26th Infantry Division. Also known as the Taekwon-Do Division. 1971 marked the year Grandmaster Hwang was invited to the US and first taught a credited class at Manchester Community Technical College, and then one year later in 1972 he opened his first Taekwon-Do school. In 1974 Grandmaster Hwang graduated from the first International Taekwon-Do Federation Instructors course held by General Choi, Hong Hi in Montréal Canada. He also graduated from the ITF Umpires course. Grandmaster Hwang also happens to be one of three Grandmasters (9th Degree black belts) ever promoted by General Choi, Hong Hi. The others are Grandmaster Rhee of the UK, and Grandmaster Sereff of the US. Grandmaster Hwang has served as Director of the USA Junior Taekwon-Do team every Junior World Championships since 1990 and was the 1989 and 1992 USA Senior Taekwon-Do Team Director. Grandmaster Hwang served as special assistant to General Choi, was the Official Spokesman of the ITF, and served as Chairman of the ITF Promotion and Merger Committees. In addition, as Secretary General of the ITF . Grandmaster Hwang currently oversees 15 Hwang’s School of Taekwon-Do, and many schools throughout the world. Traveling and giving seminars in places such as Aruba, Australia, Canada, Greece, Italy, India, Ireland, Mexico and the Philippines.

From Kenya I travelled on Tuesday 20th to Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) for the fourth time since 2008 to conduct another technical seminar. When I arrived at Bole Airport in Addis I did not only have the feeling to see good friends again but to come home. It was very emotional for me. This time I had divided the groups into group one (only red belts on Friday = 89 participants), group two (only 1st and 2nd degree = 52 participants) and group three (3rd degree and above 19 participants). We trained on the first day 9 hours, the second day 9.5 hours and the third day 6 hours. Especially the red belts and the 3rd degrees and above made big technical efforts since the last year. Also some 1st and 2nd degrees. The development is really very good and I think that in one year the can be almost independent. What they need very much is one umpire seminar. Also here I want to suggest and I will make a motion to send Master van den Heuvel or Master Cecconato to Addis to conduct this seminar. This seminar could be combined with their national tournament next year (August ?) and another technical seminar. I also try to bring (with the support of Master Ferrando and hopefully FUJI company) three rings of mats and safety equipment to Ethiopia so that they can use this for the future and to organize the 1st African Championship in the near future. On Monday morning, July 26th, a promotion was held and 5 participants successfully participated. Three were promoted to 3rd degree and two to 4th degree. Conclusion: In the last two years the practitioners technically made big steps forward and the money has been reasonable invested in this country. Letter from EITA Executive Board members Master Paul Willer contributed a lot for our country in making not only Taekwon-Do but also adding value to all the members and participants of Taekwon-Do. Though it is difficult to tell his good deeds with these simple words we consider him as a UNICEF ambassador who is considerate for the children. He is a partner of us like that of the loving Mother Theresa of India . At least, we have got the gut to name as the above mentioned brand. We are forced to forward the above mentioned adjectives since he visited our country for the fourth time and showed us not only the Taekwon-Do art but also various life lessons which can completely change our lives at large. We are very much grateful for ITF for all these favours. We are currently feeling that we know and understand TaekwonDo so that we can say that Taekwon-Do is advancing and developing in many perspectives. What we left is to check out ourselves with the friends of the rest of the world in competition. Master Paul had made our potential boost up and brought a successful result in transforming our capacity to a better level in cooperation with the ITF and our association for the fourth time. He did this in just having visited various regions of our country by going 600 K.M which had tiresome and monotonous roads that shows his scarifies for the us as well as for the human being. This let him understand the present Taekwon-Do situation in our country. He offered his spicy lesson for four consecutive days for us here in our metropolis, Addis Ababa . Around one hundred sixty one participants attended the seminar by taking the participants who hold above red belt as a main focus and the participants’ joy was beyond expression. Generally, in his six days staying in our country he visited the Taekwon-Do clubs which are found in the southern part of the country for two days. During his visit some four hundred students lined with their uniform and welcomed him with bouquet of flowers in Shashemene town which he later answered the questions of various media journalists. In this programme different shows were presented by the students. And he was also given similar warm welcome in Hawasa and Nazreth towns. Similarly he had interviews with journalists of Medias. On that particular day the pattern, sparing and breaking shows were presented. He gave a four consecutive days Taekwon-Do training in Addis Ababa after his two days visit. He completed his first day by awarding forty Red Belt students who were trained from Choon ji to Choo mo, Self defense techniques and Sambo, Ibo Ibo Mosgi. The program took the whole day from that of 9 A.M in the morning to 7; 30 P.M in the evening where about ninety participants attended it. In the second day training fifty one participants were attended from that of 9; 30 A.M till 1; 30 P.M which the training includes from Choon ji to Ji bak and manifested self-defense. In the third day twenty instructors whose belt level is from 3rd, 4th, and 5th degree holders attended the program. In this training, according to their level, from wiam pattern to Sosan Pattern have been explained and corrected that includes the theory and discussion, question and answers. In the last and fourth day an exam was set for the day so that examinees of the 2nd degree to the 3rd, and examinees of the 3rd to the 4th degree were presented and two instructors passed to the 4th degree and three instructors passed to the 3rd degree .Generallly, on the programme we rectified a lot of mistakes and besides the Taekwon-Do training we had additional time which we got a strong motivation and respect for work and proper use of time & its management from Master Paul. Firstly, congratulations on your efforts with the site and magazine, they are evolving well and continuing to be informative and interesting.

Forgive me for saying but I was recently surfing the internet and surfed onto the I.T.F. Vienna site, which is now claiming they too are applying for membership with the Sports Accord.

My main reason for writing is in response to the first aid tips in last issue 8. I believe that tip number 4 is incorrect and potentially dangerous. In particular the part about how long to apply the ice for..."each ice session should last for at least 20 minutes". Medical opinions vary in regards to the exact amount of time that ice should be applied but ice applied for too long can cause permanent damage similar to frostbite. A generally accepted guideline (see references below) for application is between 10 - 25 minutes at a time and removed for around the same time before re-application. e.g. 15mins on, 15mins off, 15mins on.

My opinion on this is why are the two main I.T.F.’s not bothering to put the past behind them and join forces, especially on this project. If both want membership, surely we can unite and take the I.T.F. into the future as one body again. As an outsider not involved in the talks, it appears to me that both groups want the best for their members and the I.T.F. (I.e. Mr. Chang’s group is making the move to get the I.T.F. membership under them - after all, it was them that had the first meeting with the Sports Accord).

I hope this is helpful. I have included a couple of references below for further, more detailed information.

For the millions in the two groups, I feel it’s time that both sides get together and put the family back as one. Admittedly, both will not give up the leadership, so why don’t the two agree to work with each other on this project and others and reunite our groups, at the very least.

NATIONAL OPEN TRAINING DAY Held in conjunction with the U.K.T.U.

The art of Tae Kwon Do is practiced by millions globally, but thousands in the U.K. also train in the art - in fact, if all gathered together, we’d have the biggest organisation in the world! Many of the original I.T.F. organisations and clubs in the U.K. still claim they are open minded and prepared to train with anyone but, sadly, this is talk as nearly all of them segregate their members to their own organisations, meaning members miss out on interaction with other Tae Kwon Do brothers and sisters. At least, this was the case up until 2004 when a new group was formed who really put their money where their mouth is by opening the doors to all practitioners at their tournaments and events. On 4th July, the 5th annual open training day was arranged by the L.T.S.I. This event has been a major success since it was created in 2005, with all candidates receiving three seminars in one day and all for a low fee of £15 (yep, this is NO typo!). The group is noted by thousands as being one of the best groups in the U.K. for quality events well worth attending. On this event, Senior Instructors (I.T.F. and non I.T.F. ) ranging from 6th Degree to 4th Degree came together to stage a day that all would remember for a very long time. In the morning, I introduced all Instructors to the 60 plus students eagerly waiting to take part in this great day. However, I was sidelined after falling down the stairs a week before, resulting in a back injury and neck problems.

Unfortunately, in the morning, some did not make the first 45 minutes but arrived by 10am to take part in some of the later sessions that day. We had 70 people registered, but some did not bother attending as promised (it seems some really are not prepared to train with others like they claim they are). I was called by a friend, Mr. Adams, on the day who said family commitments had stopped him from attending and he was sorry it was nice to see some still had the respect to inform us. We have now decided that from 2011, all our events will still be open, but we will make them I.T.F. based - therefore, if you want to attend, it will be I.T.F. training and our cross training seminars will be on totally separate days. We have also decided everyone will pay in full before the seminar, as the guest conductors still want their fee for the two hour sections. Anyway, onto the report - at 9am, I called the class in to have a quick chat about what we expected from them over the day prior to stretching them up. I then took everyone through one of my usual stretching routines and asked Mr. Andrew Smith, 2nd Degree, to take a cardio session for me, as he knows how I teach as he frequents my classes with Stuart Smith (his step dad) to get extra lessons every now and again. The warm up started with music blaring, Andrew took all candidates through a very up tempo session for the set 10 minutes, then we split the class into three with Stuart Smith, 4th Degree, taking his group through breaking, Mr Slater, 6th Degree, taking the Black Belts through basics and me taking a section on kicking as best as I could do

that is, as I was in a bit of pain. From 9.30am to 11.30am, this was where everyone would get the chance to train under different senior coaches for 35 minutes from I.T.F. and Independent groups. At 2.30pm, the class was lined up and Master Holmes, 8th Degree, was introduced along with his three assistant Instructors. They all looked mean, but were great Instructors as they gave full assistance to those of us wanting to learn a bit of their art. The Master said to all students “Lift your arms up” - they complied. He said “Ok, extend your little fingers” - they did. He then said “Wiggle your fingers fast” - all looked stunned, but did it. He said “Ok, that’s the warm up done - let’s get on with it!”. The class laughed and the tempo was now set for the session.

Master Holmes stated that all Martial Arts have flaws in them - he said Ju-Jistu has no stances as such, and that one problem he sees with most arts is wasted energy. This is when we block, we often pull the next strike out prior to attacking - he said this is not the case with Ju-Jitsu as, once inside the body, you hit with whatever is available. The self defence looked more complicated than what we as TKD’ist do. He got the under 13’s to go with the two Instructors at the bottom of the gym, whilst the rest done more extreme locks and holds which could lead to destroying the limb. The class was in awe of his teaching abilities, as he was relaxed and very calm in his approach to teaching the class. Master Holmes moved around the floor helping all members and trying to make everyone at ease, where as we Tae Kwon Do’ists are very strict and disciplined on students in class. The Master said you get more from a relaxed class then you do if you try and bully - this was a good thought process. We took hundreds of pictures and a lot of video of the days event - we could base a whole magazine on the day alone, but this would be wrong. All we can say, it was a day of real success where everyone took something from it. After the gruelling two hours, Master Holmes made a statement to the class which many can verify - he said “I do many events over the year and this one the L.T.S.I. hold and another one in Bedford are among my favourite ones, as the students and coaches are really interested in learning our art to compliment your art”. We gave our appreciation by applause - the Master said “Thank you for inviting me. I have enjoy the day teaching, Chris”. 5 Small, But Crucial Cardio Mistakes By John Izzo

1. Not Drinking Water During the Workout My girlfriend is guilty of this. I notice that when we do our cardio training together, she never sips her water. The bottle just lays in its little cubby-hole on the cardio console and she gulps it down at the end. Did you hear what I said? I said she GULPS it down at the end of the cardio session. Hydration is so important, especially during strenuous physical activity, that even a 2% loss in hydration will affect performance. Dehydration, combined with strenuous exercise, creates an environment of not only physical, but mental stress. How does mental stress affect your performance? If you “feel” that you are over-exerting yourself, chances are you will not increase the level on your treadmill, crosstrainer, bike, or stepper. Chances are as performance decreases, so will your drive to increase the power outage that you may be capable of doing. Hence, steady state cardio work prevails... The lesson here? Take sips throughout your cardio session every other minute. There are various physical signs that you are beginning to experience dehydration during exercise: 1.) you cannot keep posture and composure during cardio exercise, 2.) your cheeks and face become rosey red and flushed, 3.) you do not sweat normally. 2. Doing the Same Cardio Machine Day After Day I know why we all do this. We get good at what we started out doing! Just think 6 weeks ago, you thought level 5 on the elliptical trainer was impossible. Now you are continuously jumping up to level 7 with no difficulty whatsoever. That is a great accomplishment for the standard sedentary individual who has finally adapted daily exercise into their lives and has made some improvements in body composition and overall health. BUT...for the typical hardgainer, this is a carnival merry-go-round. Typically, we need to feel successful to justify the work we put into improving our bodies, increasing strength, or losing fat. I have always said that “success breeds success”. So psychologically, when we “get good” on a particular type of cardiovascular activity (i.e. running, elliptical, rowing, stepper, etc), we tend to believe that we have reached a pinnacle in our training. That’s not a bad thing. But again, for the hardgainer, this can be a vicious cycle of nothingness. This cycle is a result of the body’s specific adaptation to imposed demands (SAID) principle. The hardest exercise becomes easier the better we get at it. Therefore, the better we are at it, the more efficient we become at that particular activity. The more efficient we become at the activity, the less calories we burn. (Read that again if you do not understand) Oh yea...forget the little calorie counter that pops up on the screen. It’s based on total weight and keeps going even when you step on the sides of the treadmill. 3. Steady State Cardio We all heard how this one is a waste of time. Let me explain how it is a waste of time in regards to fat loss. The body uses 3 sources of energy to sustain ATP (adenosine tri-phosphate) production. ATP is the body’s end-all, be-all source of energy. In order for the body to live, it must continuously produce ATP. Well, it does this in 3 ways. Our immediate source of energy production comes from creatine phosphate (CP), where a creatine molecule is donated to ADP (adenosine di-phosphate) to create ATP. This action is anaerobic and requires only creatine which the body supplies or is obtained from meats. This immediate source of energy lasts only around 5 seconds and is primarily used for power. The second source of energy is glycolosis—the breaking down of sugars to produce ATP. This process is also anaerobic and lasts usually 3 to 5 minutes. Glycolysis refers to the body-

using glycogen (stored sugar) in blood and muscles to continuously make ATP. This process is the one we usually exercise in. The third and often never tapped into is oxidative phosphorilization. This process is aerobic and calls upon oxygen to aid in mobilizing fat cells to be used as energy. This process allows the body to last longer in endurance type bouts or high intense bouts of exercise. So...how does this correlate with steady state exercise? Easy. When we perform 30 minutes of walking, we never step out of glycolosis as our primary source of ATP production (energy). We are simply burning off the sugars of foods we have eaten in the last 24-48 hours. We never try to sprint on the treadmill, pick the higher level on the ellipticals, or take a spinning class...we basically do what we have been taught or what comes easiest. This has been my argument in regards to watching TV while doing cardio. If your goal is fat loss, you can try the steady state stuff for a while, but when your cardiovascular system improves and your diet is better, then you need to work harder to expedite oxidative phosphorilization. This fat mobilizing process is also known as EPOC (Excessive Post- Exercise Oxygen Consumption). In simple terms it means that the body continues to mobilize fat as fuel for up to 1 hour after an intense bout of cardio (180+ bpm). 4. Scared to Do Cardio Before Weights This is an old bodybuilder’s myth that started way back when. Why do we think cardio (the right kind—not steady state) will cause muscle loss? It is okay to perform your cardio BEFORE your strength training—even if your goal is hypertrophy or strength. Why? Because if you follow the proper food intake and understand the amount of calories you need to sustain lean body mass, than intense bouts of cardio (defined as above 180+ bpm, short duration (12-15minutes)) will actually promote muscle gain. The real fear should come from figuring out the total amount of calories you ingested for a 24 hour period. This is what I used to tell my clients...ever see a sprinter? Ever see how muscular they are? Doing your cardio first and then performing strength training can lead to the EPOC phenomenon that I mentioned above. Of course, this is dependent on your intensity, rep schemes, rest periods, and fitness level. 5. Old Sneakers There is no doubt in my mind that 70% of foot and knee problems come from poor or old sneakers. How many times have you seen gym-goers running on the treadmill with old, beatup sneakers with grass stains, and cracks all over the “pleather”? I mean, those sneakers are used for Saturday morning lawn mowing and then taken to the gym to perform your 30 minutes cardio routine? C’mon.... In the last 4 years, every client that I met that had old sneakers evidenced by the condition, wear of soles, and or “lack of bounce”, I had them purchase new ones. I would not start their training program until they came to me with new sneakers. Period. And you know what happened? Knee pain disappeared...foot pain disappeared...and clients didn’t cut cardio out of their workouts. They felt better running or doing inclines. You know that pain you feel on the elliptical in your foot? It disappeared with a brand new pair of Addidas. How does sneaker condition affect lower body function? If your soles are worn, or your have pronated or supinated ankles, chances are your foot strike is not optimal on hard surfaces or a treadmill. What this does is create dysfunction at the ankle joint (usually due to dynamic instability) and weak/tight peroneals and tibialis (ankle muscles). This kinetic chain dysfunction travels up to the next joint, which is the knee and then the hip and causes undo stress on the lower back and entire spinal column. This is another reason why people skip out on cardio or like the steady state easy stuff— because their feet can’t handle it! Besides, a new pair of sneakers gives people the sense of starting something new and committing to a fitness program.

“Respect...your honour for life.” Emphasis will also be placed on the importance of courtesy and how it relates to showing respect for others. Courtesy is much more than the obvious idea of having good manners. Courtesy involves all aspects of civility, gentility, etiquette and politeness that say a lot about us to those around us. We must be aware, though, that we need to make a conscious choice to be courteous and respectful of others. The choices we make determine how well we will interact with others and how comfortable we will be in life’s day to day situations. Can we really be productive and content if we do not have “esteem, regard and honour” in our lives for ourselves, others and our environment? No, we cannot. How does making someone feel special relate to the idea of showing respect? The answer is the building up others through words and actions plays a major role in showing and earning respect. Respect. If everyone could learn the value of this one word, what a wonderful world we would live in. Truly, it is the value of respect and how we apply it to ourselves, the people around us and our environment that sets the tone of our every aspect of our lives. Each of these elements directly effects the others as well. How can we possible learn to show respect for others and our environment if we do not respect ourselves? We learn initially respect from our parents or guardians. Those first, “NO! Don’t touch the stove” and “Be nice to the doggy” help us to realise that our actions affect the world around us. As we mature, we learn to socialise and interact with others outside of our families and respect plays an important role in how we fit into the world around us. The theme of Respect follows the overall theme of the Life Skills and Leadership program and reinforces the importance of showing and earning respect in our own lives. Can we get respect from others by demanding it? Can money buy respect? Can beauty? True admiration comes from respectable actions.

Early Codes of Etiquette Since ancient times, people have developed formal rules of ideal behaviour. These rules, both written or unwritten, are known as codes of etiquette. One of the first rules established to help people get along well became known as the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Various forms of this Golden Rule appear in the New Testament and in the writings of such early philosophers as Confucius and Plato. In ancient China, proper conduct for the upper classes was described in documents like the ‘I-Li’ (Book of Etiquette and Ceremonial), which instructed government officials how to behave at various ceremonies. It’s rules covered such matters as proper dress and hair style, which direction to face, and how many bows to make. To the Chinese, ceremonious behaviour was a way to achieve orderliness and self-control. The ideal man of ancient Athens was the “kalos kagathos” (the beautiful and the good). He was to be wise, just, courageous and generous, truthful, and amiable. Modesty was not required, and consideration for others was not regarded as important. This person also had to be especially handsome, since a person thought ugly was not considered ideal. Roman citizens were expected to conduct themselves according to gravitas, a traditional rule of dignity. Vulgarity and boasting were considered ill-mannered. Romans were to show respect to all men, particularly officials and the aged, and even to the poor and to slaves. Personal appearance was less important to the Romans than to the Athenians. Medieval warriors of Japan, the Samurai, were governed by a code of conduct known as “Bushido.” Dignity, honesty, and courage were stressed. As well was absolute loyalty to one’s master. He was expected to show affection, but it was undignified to express his devotion to his family outside of his home. To achieve fame and honour, a Samurai would undergo great suffering. If he was dishonoured, committing ritual suicide known as hara-kari was the ultimate form of redemption. As you can see, early codes of etiquette were taken very seriously and became the foundations of the civilized world as we know it today.

an injury occurring to or affecting the middle (gray area) of the spinal cord is referred to as Central Cord Syndrome and an injury that affects only one side of the spinal cord is referred to as Brown-Sequard Syndrome. Paralysis is often the most common result of any spinal cord injury, but in the case of an incomplete spinal cord injury - the paralysis is only temporary. Sometimes the initial impact or injury isn't the only telling factor in whether or not a spinal cord injury is complete or incomplete, in many cases the secondary wave of effects is a large determining factor in the possibility of recovery. Swelling or inflammation can result at and around the actual site of the injury and can severely intensify the already present symptoms or add more symptoms than were already present. There is a chance that the secondary symptoms will subside as well and allow for partial or total recovery depending upon the severity of the initial injury.

A spinal cord injury can occur as a result of several different causes - automobile accidents, high intensity impact (as could be common in a sports injury), falls, physical abuse or any kind of trauma could potentially cause a spinal cord injury. In some instances the impact need not even be all that severe if the pressure of it is pointed at precisely the right spot. Injuries to the spinal cord are often broken down into one of two classifications - they are either complete spinal cord injuries or incomplete spinal cord injuries. The more severe of the two classifications is the 'complete' spinal cord injury. Contrary to popular belief, in a complete spinal cord injury the spinal cord is rarely broken or severed - in fact a severed spinal cord almost never occurs. The victim of a complete spinal cord injury will have lost both feeling and motor function from the point of the injury down through the rest of the body - so if the complete spinal cord injury were to occur at the base of the neck, the person would lose the use of and feeling in everything below the neck. Though recovery from what were considered complete spinal cord injuries has occurred, it is extremely unlikely - less than five percent of complete spinal cord injury sufferers will have any recovery from their injuries. The classification of incomplete spinal cord injuries can be broken down further into more subcategories. An injury occurring to or affecting the front of the spinal cord is referred to as Anterior Cord Syndrome;

Even in an incomplete spinal cord injury, the person suffering the injury may not fully recover from all of the symptoms that were first experienced. Remember that the area of the injury, and any point below may be affected - so a spinal cord injury occurring just at the base of the neck could affect feeling and usage of the arms, the legs, the thorax, the bowels and bladder and the sexual organs. Scientists are continually focusing great effort on studies to help them fully understand all types of spinal cord injuries in an effort to be able to quickly diagnose and properly treat any and all types of spinal injuries as well a develop new techniques that may lessen the burden felt by sufferers of spinal cord injuries. Possible hopes for the future which are currently being explored include electronic stimulation devices and the potential for damaged cell replacement for reversing some of the affects of spinal cord injuries. Though facts and figures of the validity of these courses of treatment aren't quite yet available, scientist remain optimistic that diagnosis and treatment of spinal cord injuries will continue to get better and better as technological advancements continue to be made.

I am the happiest man who has done everything to do in my life. It is fortunate you have come. Is Mr. Chang Ung here? Mr. Rhee Ki Ha, it is good that you have come. I am glad that my son and daughters like you most. You probably might know Mr. Chang Ung well. It is time to introduce Mr. Chang Ung proudly in public. Please carry on propaganda that Mr. Chang Ung is the tallest and in the highest position in the ITF. If only I had been as tall as Mr. Chang Ung, I could have had less opponents, however, as my body was so tiny that there were many opponents. Thus, all alone, I could not but fight against them for so long. But I have never been worn out for the justice was on my side.

I have always worried about a successor to the President, however, my mind is set at ease for there is Mr. Chang Ung. Mr. Hwang Kwang Sung, your duty is very big and important as a spokesman and the Chairman of the Merger Committee. It was my wish to merge the TaeKwon-Do into one. Please get on your own duty responsibly. Mr. Park Jong Soo had immigrated into Canada in 1967. Before that he educated TaeKwon-Do in Europe.

In 1972, I went to Canada where Mr. Park Jong Soo resided leaving my children behind without informing them. In those days Taekwon-Do was not widely spread, so that I used to say to crave the words of TaeKwon-Do on my coffin.Now Taekwon-Do has developed on a large scale. I love Mr. Tom MacCallum.

Please enlarge the Consultative Committee into 9 members. Here I appoint Mr. Jong Jae Hon. My followers, - Taekwon-Do never exists without the D.P.R. of Korea You should know this. The ITF is an International organization and does it need to argue about ideology? Does the United Nations belong to the Black people because the Secretary General is Black?. Please give up this kind of idea. TaeKwon-Do must be Korean-centred. Choi Jung Hwa lied me at the airport. I was again deceived. You ought to tell the public throughout the internet that I did not forgive Jung Hwa. I forgave him as a father, but the TaeKwon-Doists would never forgive him. Before Jung Hwa apologizes TaeKwon-Doists the world over, he will never be forgiven. While I am still alive, you should send the message to the internet the soonest as possible.
