rdagh Group has developed an ultra-lightweight 275ml bottle for Beck’s and Beck’s Blue , reducing the original from 185gms to 165gms. The 11 per cent weight reduction on 130 million bottles will save 2,642 tonnes of glass, the equivalent weight of over 200 modern double decker buses. The new lighter bottle will mean 1,940 tonnes of CO2 are removed from the manufacturing process at Ardagh’s glass plant in Nienburg, Germany, where the bottles were

Ardagh Group FP 4/13.indd 3

produced. Ardagh’s use of advanced analytical design tools enabled the 20g per bottle weight reduction to be achieved whilst maintaining the strength of the original container. Designers were also able to provide additional value through the incorporation of a label panel, whilst retaining the outline bottle shape and neck profile of the previous design. Fabienne Rollot, marketing director, at Beck’s Western Europe, said: “Beck’s is a pioneering brand at the forefront of independent

thinking, always looking for ways to innovate. This change is just one of the ways in which we are improving our environmental performance and making our iconic green bottles even greener.” Inge Plochaet, president, at AB InBev UK & Ireland, said: “The lighter Beck’s bottles will make a tangible contribution to this effort and represent another significant step towards realising our ambition to become the Best Beer Company in a Better World.”

Special Beverage and bottling technology

GERNEP GmbH Precision in labelling

G

ERNEP – the well established manufacturer of labelling machines located in Southern Germany – is exhibiting at “China Brew & China Beverage 2014”. Compared to the linear labelling machines, GERNEP - as a specialist for rotary labelling machines - offers considerably more possibilities for labelling equipment and more flexible applications. Even different labelling systems can be combined on one GERNEP machine. GERNEP is well prepared for modern self adhesive labelling. The rotary labelling machine of type LABETTA-SK is predestined to meet the requirements of all sectors of the labelling industry. Special servo drives located at the self adhesive dispenser transfer the labels precise and above all smooth onto the container; even in recessed or increased label fields. Innovative and exclusive label designs as well as no-label-look and water resistant plastic labels can be processed. Compared to wet glue labelling systems changeover times, as well as cleaning and maintenance works are obviously shorter. For wet glue labelling GERNEP provides the labelling machine of type LABETTA. An important advantage of the wet glue aggregate is the innovative overlay gear which allows precise label adjustment along with individually adjustable glue segments. For hot melt wrap around labelling of different container formats with OPP labels from the label roll the

GERNEP FP.indd 3

labelling machine of type ROLLFED, likewise the ROLLINA labelling machine for hot melt wrap around labelling of paper labels from the magazine set new accents. The glue application of the rotary labelling machines results from a special closed hot melt system. Technically at the highest level is the solution of the start and end gluing with the recently developed gluing head. Hot melt is applied contact-free and selective onto the label or container via nozzles. As a result of the closed hot melt system the entry of any foreign matter is effectively prevented and cleaning and maintenance effort can be seriously minimised. Highly variable is the combination of wet glue, self adhesive and hot melt labelling. To meet all requirements of the processing industry GERNEP developed the series GERNEP COMBI. Due to the compact

arrangement of several different labelling systems nearly every label outfit can be realized. Optionally, the labelling machines LABETTA and GERNEP COMBI can be equipped with mechanical or photo electronical container orientation systems. At customer request the machines can additionally be equipped with (wet glue or self adhesive) guarantee seal labelling in L- or U-shape. Alternatively, all types of GERNEP labelling machines can be equipped with servo driven bottle plates for labelling of various container formats. The servo controlled bottle rotation offers an especially high flexibility. Referring to this reliable and proven product range for labelling technology GERNEP is the perfect partner for up-to-date labelling requirements.

NEW DEVIN BOTTLE. A SIP OF CRYSTAL CLEAR WATER

B

ACKGROUND Devin, the best selling and best known mineral water brand in Bulgaria, has chosen the P.E.T. Engineering design team to develop its new packaging for the launch of its Devin - Crystal Line a water intended for the HO.RE.CA sector.

THE PROJECT The P.E.T. Engineering challenge is to design packaging with a premium appearance which is not in glass the material usually used in the HO.RE.CA sector and more generally for all premium products - but rather with PET, most commonly used for bulk products with limited aesthetic appeal.

THE SOLUTION The idea behind the packaging

PET ENGINEERING FP 4/14.indd 3

was thus to give premium value to a low cost material by means of a sophisticated design and a glass effect finish capable of combining the unbreakability, lightweight and low cost advantages of PET with concepts of elegance, character and

refined simplicity. Our designers thus used the regular forms of crystal glass as their starting point as the geometric perfection of its elements and their repetition in three dimensional space creates an elaborate decoration which begins at the base and continues upwards along its conical and essential shape. The bottle’s three dimensional decoration and the use of Novapet’s Glasstar reproducing the vibrant transparency of glass produces an interesting refraction effect and the bottle shines like a crystal in the light. Its blue and silver label with a cap in the same colour highlights the preciousness of this sip of crystal clear water strongly.

RELIABILITY AND EFFICIENCY, KEY FACTORS FOR ZAMBELLI

Z

ambelli Srl was founded in 1969 as a company to manufacture packaging machines in the mechanical deep-rooted tradition of the city of Bologna, famous worldwide as “Packaging Valley”. In a few years the success of the technological solutions adopted has crossed the Italian borders and created a customer base of international renown. Zambelli today range of machines is composed by: › shrinkwrapping machines › tray-packers › cartoners › case packers › pick & place and robotized palletizer . The beverage industry has always

ZAMBELLI FP 4/14.indd 3

been the primary market for Zambelli. Since the introduction of the PET bottles, beverage volumes have dramatically increased along with new designs of light weight bottles, with reliability and efficiency of the machines becoming a must for every successful bottler . Zambelli took up eagerly this challenge since its machine design was developed to measure up to the expectations of operators and maintenance personnel who test reliability and efficiency every day and ultimately make the success of a piece of machinery and a manufacturer. Zambelli have followed this efficiency-seeking approach with its

LFT series of Tray-Packers/Shrinkwrappers starting from the engineering of the frame, featuring a cantilever design that allows the operator total control of and accessibility to all areas of the machine. The frame is also designed so that all the parts that need lubrication are gathered in the back side of the machine. This hygienic design maintains separation between the lubricated parts and the parts in contact with the bottles. In addition to these benefits built in the frame itself of the LFT series of Tray-packers/Shrink-wrapping machine, Zambelli has also given its machines features that allow following advantages: › reduced change over time

10/10/14 16:47

› “user friendly” approach › reduced machine footprint › reduced maintenance costs › higher production efficiency › better quality of the shrunk packs All these advantages have been obtained through up-to-date technological solutions to operate and control the machine cycle but also thanks to the Zambelli design with less moving parts hence less wear and adjustments, an extensive field testing and the standardization of functional groups on several machine models to extend to a wide range of machines the benefits in

ZAMBELLI FP 4/14.indd 4

terms of reliability and efficiency brought by every innovation. Examples of this development are: › bottle separation system which allows to pack bottles of any format and diameter on the same machine while maintaining optimal performance conditions. › wrapping bar assembly without drive chains. This group has no part subject to lubrication or wear, total accessibility, operation with no resistance and can be immediately reset in case of an e-stop. › tunnel metal mesh belt without side drive chains; the removal of

these chains that are highly sensible to the cyclic heating and cooling through the tunnel has reduced to zero the maintenance of all the tunnel. The stretching of the mesh belt is in fact automatically compensated for by a counter weight assembly. › powered servo driven film unwinding system preventing any film stretching when pulled from the roll › allows a dramatic reduction of the film thickness with significant material savings for the end user. Furthermore the absence of stretching of the film increases the accuracy of the centering of the printed film on the bundle. Zambelli’s research has also tackled energy consumption for film shrinking and aesthetic improvement of the shrink pack. Zambelli unique energy saving heating tunnel design has obtained

10/10/14 16:47

perfectly shaped packs without wrinkles by a tunnel of reduced length hence reducing thermal waste and machine footprint . Zambelli “user friendly” technology with less moving parts in the machine has a dramatic impact on reducing time needed for installation and commissioning, training customer’s personnel and carry out scheduled maintenance. All together these features reduce the machine’s total cost of ownership (TCO) that is the ultimate customer’s goal. These are only some of the innovative features shared by all the Zambelli LFT series Tray-packers and Shrink-wrapping machines, throughout the widest range of capacity available from 15 up to 150 cycles per minute and capable of running product in film only, pad + film or tray+film style. Zambelli certainly have the right machine to help you driving down your production costs!

ZAMBELLI FP 4/14.indd 6

An example of performance and good results of the LFT series is the recent Zambelli machines installed by Eko-Vit, Poland and by Drogheria & Alimentari Spa, Italy Zambelli has installed at Eko-Vit Poland a perfect example of their design philosophy: the Zambelli LFT70/V Tray-packer/Shrink-wrapper running at 70 cycles per minute fed with cans -150ml, 250ml, 296ml, 330ml, 355ml, 500ml and glass bottles 275ml and 300ml. Great flexibility with so different product formats handled on the same machine! The Zambelli in-feed conveyor is purposely designed to allow quick change over just by sliding side guides with preset positions for the three different formats that can be fed to the machine (hi-cones, multipacks and loose cans). The Zambelli LFT70/V Tray-packer/ Shrink-wrapper is pre-arranged to produce also pad+film or film only,

a great feature to respond to future requests from the market. The machine cycle is controlled by Siemens PLC and a 15” touchscreen PC allows the operator to easily monitor all the phases of the machine working cycle thanks to a graphic diagnostic system. The Zambelli LFT 20s installed by Drogheria & Alimentari Spa, Italy, equipped with a Toshiba Scara robot is a further example of great flexibility offered by the LFT series. Plastic or glass jars ranging from round to bulge to taper are packed in 6 packs, with shrink film unsupported, tray+film or in a full wraparound case. Three different packages available on the same machine with the robot loading the jars into the machine for packing with virtually no change over. Zambelli is happy to welcome customers at the Drinktec Munich Stand no. 335 – A6 and at the Las Vega Pack Expo ’13 stand S-6214.

Innovative drive and automation solutions for the beverage industry

P

articularly the beverage industry has special requirements on machines, systems and equipment. This is the reason why drive technology components in the beverage industry have to be robust, durable and able to withstand high torque loads. In order for production systems in the beverage industry to be adapted to work with new processes, batches and manufacturing programs, a modular design is essential. Flexible responses to seasonal peak periods or fast batch changes offer a real competitive advantage in the food and beverage industry. The comprehensive modular system of drive components, the scalable drive solutions of the VARIOLUTION® packages as well as the individual

ADDED APPLICATION ACCURACY WITH tna’S NEW OIL SPRAYING SYSTEM tna, the global leader in packaging and processing solutions, has launched a new main line spray system which delivers optimum coverage and flavour adhesion. The tna intelli-flav® CLO 3 is a cutting-edge closed loop oiler (CLO) suitable for use across a range of industries where it delivers highly accurate and concise oil application in tumble drums for product flavourings and other uses. The latest in the tna intelli-flav® CLO series of closed loop oil sprayers, the tna intelli-flav® CLO 3 builds on the successful design of previous CLO systems but now includes additional features and improvements to ensure customers obtain the most consistent seasoning application in the industry with an extended product life. These combine to produce a sleeker, more hygienic and more operator-friendly main line system which provides exceptional accuracy in application on salty, baked and extruded snacks as well as on nuts, biscuits, crackers and pet food. Suitable for main line seasoning in particular, the tna intelli-flav® CLO 3 uses coriolis mass flow measurement and a closed feedback loop. Its revolutionary technology also allows for a variety of application rates by increasing the number of spray guns. Combined, this ensures that the sprayed

SEW EURODRIVE FP 4/13.indd 4

liquid meets the target requirement even when levels fluctuate to provide the most consistent, even oil coverage available in the market today. This regular, even coverage then enables highly accurate seasoning adherence. In addition, the tna intelli-flav® CLO 3 is the only oiling system in the world to offer an air filtration system which ensures 99.9% of the facility air is clean and completely dry as moisture can dramatically reduce product shelf life. The tna intelli-flav® CLO 3 also uses FQT spray gun air atomising and airless nozzles to meet any required range from 6kg/hr to 250kg/hr. And while highly technical in its capabilities, the tna intelli-flav® CLO 3 is easy to use. Operators can simply choose a recipe and the system can be set to go. Commenting

on this exciting launch, David Woollard, seasoning group sales manager – tna, said: “Manufacturers are looking to maximise efficiencies and ROI throughout their production processes and reducing raw material costs is a key way they can achieve this. In snacks manufacturing, for example, oil is often one of their highest financial outlays. The tna intelli-flav® CLO 3 offers a new and unique spraying system which enables them to not just control the levels of oil application for optimum product quality but also ensure what is sprayed is applied in an accurate way, exactly where it should be. Ideal for main line seasoning, the tna intelli-flav® CLO 3 also has applications for ‘on-machine systems’ too. It is a valuable addition to our leading tna intelli-flav® seasoning range.”

Customized automated solutions for the beverage industry:

Efficient, safe and very ergonomic

T

he trend towards automation is also making great strides among beverage suppliers. Users want their machines and systems to work more efficiently and safely while at the same time relieving employees of tiring, monotonous and physically heavy work. The BEUMER Group develops customized system solutions like the BEUMER stretch hood highperformance packaging machine and incorporates them as needed into existing packaging lines. In addition, BEUMER integrates its machinery into higher-level systems. In this way beverage suppliers are able to cut their logistics costs considerably. Efficient automation equipment which reduces cycle times in production as well as costs continues to be the focus for many users and is considered an important factor for success. Beverage suppliers are therefore more and more frequently relying on automated system solutions that are specially tailored to meet their individual requirements. “The challenge for the future lies in the integration of these systems,” explains Franz-Joseph Kleigrewe. The automation manager has been with the BEUMER Group since 1977 and knows what he is talking about. He is convinced that the dovetailing of processes will continue to increase. “Intralogistics is in a state of change. This is due to the demographic development as well as the increasing complexity of processes. Automation engineering in particular is therefore continuously encouraged,” he says. In this way, manual operations can be optimized and expedient synergies formed between man and machine. Automation engineering is the

BEUMER FP 4/14.indd 3

key to technical development and further progress.

Coordinated systems “Users want systems which are optimally matched to one another,” says Kleigrewe, who is well aware of the market requirements. BEUMER supplies its stretch hood high-performance packaging machine to the beverage industry. Its specialists integrate the machine without any trouble into existing packaging lines. Thanks to its many years of experience in control and automation engineering, the system provider BEUMER is able to take project planning into its own hands and implement complex tasks in intralogistics. This includes intelligent linking of individual machines and their integration into existing process control or merchandise information systems.

Efficient application in practice In wine cellars and other beverage

production facilities, various beverages are automatically bottled, sealed with corks, agrafes and capsules, and fitted with the appropriate label. They are then packed in different cartons or put on trays. A robot picks up these units and stacks them on waiting pallets. In order to reduce transport damage on the truck loading surfaces and to satisfy increased logistics requirements, the beverage stacks must then be safely packed. A stretch hood high-performance packaging machine supplied by BEUMER is used for this purpose. The palletized beverage cartons are fed as full pallets to the stretch hood packaging system via a conveyor. The innovative control equipment automatically detects different stack heights and flexibly adjusts itself to suit. An ultrasonic sensor determines the necessary film length. The full pallets are covered with a thin film hood. Thus the load units are effectively secured during trans-

portation and reach the customers undamaged. In order to determine the security of the packaged load, BEUMER and a well-known sparkling wine producer together with DEKRA, the world’s leading expert organization for safety, quality and environmental protection, successfully carried out various road tests under extreme conditions.

Smaller, faster, more practical BEUMER has now redesigned this high-performance packaging system from the bottom up. As part of this, its specialists analyzed different components and optimized them for functionality, arrangement and ergonomics. Users find the new BEUMER stretch hood A much more practical and easy to use than other systems in this series. In order to simplify work for maintenance personnel and ensure a higher level of availability, it has no stage and thus no steps. Maintenance tasks like changing the knives or the sealer bar are now performed at floor level. For this work the operator opens a drawer and has free access to the knife and sealer bar. The machine stops automatically for safety. It is no longer necessary to move the assemblies into the maintenance position. Thanks to this quick access, maintenance is fast and the risk of accidents and malfunctions is minimized. The operator can insert the film quickly and easily, without using any tools. After being produced, the film hood is conveyed to the machine by means of a gentle, newly devised film transport system. The seam of the film hood cools on the way to the reefing and stretching device, allowing the film hood to be reefed without loss of time. The pallets can be packaged at a faster rate. This reduces downtimes and improves packaging performance, while at the same time cutting back on energy consumption. The developers have also improved the human-

BEUMER FP 4/14.indd 4

When it comes to installation and commissioning, the BEUMER Customer Support staff knows exactly what to do to get the systems running as quickly as possible. machine interface to provide an even more ergonomic setup for operators. For this purpose the intralogistics specialist introduced the BEUMER Group Human Machine Interface (HMI), a newly designed operating unit with an improved user interface and graphic navigation. The interface is easy to understand and self-explanatory, permitting efficient planning of work sequences. The machine is controlled using a soft-touch panel with menu guidance and pictograms. The panel also gives the operator access to all the necessary training programs. The system is controlled by a Siemens SIMATIC S7-300. The U-shaped design of the frame also allows the BEUMER stretch hood to be easily connected to existing conveyor systems. Conveying no longer has to be interrupted, allowing the pallets to move smoothly and ensuring the stability of the palletized goods. The new machine can be

equipped with the BEUMER multistretch system, which can process different kinds of film and implement different packaging methods such as understretch and shelf warehouse stretching.

Experience counts To enable the BEUMER Group to provide optimum user support, the intralogistics specialist has formed teams in the individual group companies and at the Beckum site which specialize in automation solutions. More than 200 employees now work for the BEUMER Group in this area. “Our objective is to accelerate development cycles and to continuously raise the high standard which we have evolved as a result of our know-how,” says Kleigrewe. “This is the only way we can provide the right solution for our customers and look after them in an optimum manner.” The staff provide project support from the

13/10/14 14:21

inquiry to the point of handover to the customer. First of all, the specialists produce a system draft. If this is suitable, it is passed on for implementation. The staff carry out the electrical installation and integrate the machine and system controls, as well as writing the software for the PLC and for the robot equipment. A graphical representation of the processes on a user interface is also part of the system. BEUMER also ensures that information is meaningfully transmitted between the different operating levels – for example by means of ERP and MES systems. Various sorting and distribution systems are set up in BEUMER’s inhouse Technical Center in Beckum. The staff carry out several tests to enable them to fulfill the user’s requirements. “We are helped in this by valuable experience which we have gathered from numerous projects throughout the world,” underlines Kleigrewe. This is because the packaging machine film behaves differently in the cool climate of Germany than in Asia or Africa, for example. The prevailing temperatures there are different, and the humidity can be considerably higher. When all the requirements have been fulfilled, the staff carry out the installation and commissioning on site. “The BEUMER specialists know exactly what to do to get the systems running as quickly as possible,” says Kleigrewe.

Optimally matched at all times When it comes to system development, three factors affect one another: customer orientation, innovation and standardization. In the case of projects which are matched to the customer’s individual requirements, the solutions can only be applied indirectly to other projects. Innovation projects provide major opportunities, such as significant competitive advantages for new projects. On the other hand,

BEUMER FP 4/14.indd 6

Their tasks also include the electrical installation and the integration of the machine and system controls. they require very stringent project management in order to adhere to costs and schedules. As there is no progress without these innovative projects, BEUMER regularly undertakes them while carefully weighing up the opportunities and risks. With the proven standard solutions, the customer is provided with a costeffective and reliably operating system which he can put into operation in a very short time. “The processes usually differ with different users,” remarks Kleigrewe. “This is why our solutions are always specially adapted – sometimes more, sometimes less.” The ability to accommodate individual requirements is one of the BEUMER Group’s strengths.

Common standards make for short project durations “We often start from the situation where the larger the machine and the more systems are incorporated, the more control systems are used, and these have to be matched to one another,” explains Kleigrewe. Four control systems have been developed at BEUMER over the years. “In order to be more flexible in design and also to enable commissioning to be carried out more quickly, our objective with all developments is to use a common drive concept as

well as common machine and system controls,” says Kleigrewe. “We provide conveyor elements and interface definitions for horizontal and vertical communication straight out of the box.” For rapid development phases, the BEUMER Group has created a common software platform for all company employees. Product management and project management are all carried out using this platform. All staff involved in the project are provided with a common working environment. The common basis makes for more efficient working and reduces project durations. When the systems have been commissioned, BEUMER Customer Support staff train the machine operators and the maintenance personnel. This is the only way to ensure that the customer gets the most out of the machine. Training brings machine operators up to date on technological advances and introduces new employees to the systems. “Automated solutions are particularly suited to continuous processes when systems run around the clock seven days a week,” advises Kleigrewe. “This enables companies to save staff and for them to be deployed in other areas. Automated solutions are therefore amortized very quickly.”

Air cooled rotary vane technology replaces screw and liquid ring vacuum pumps

Jakarta is a little South of the equator, the Indonesian climate is tropical. Water cooling is problematic because of the high ambient temperature, the performance of liquid ring pumps is strongly reduced in terms of capacity and vacuum level. In order to succeed, air cooled machines must be specifically designed to operate in hot climate. Also the choice of screw vacuum pumps failed. The ultimate solution were two UV50 vacuum pumps, commissioned in March 2010.

T

he production of cans is a clean application of vacuum. Nowadays, most can plants have centralized vacuum. Capacities are high, in this case we consider 6.000 m3/h [3536 cfm]. The unexperienced choice frequent-

PNEUMOFORE FP 4/14.indd 3

ly falls on large liquid ring vacuum pumps, initially cheap to buy, but expensive to operate. These pumps come without motor, electrical- and power-panel are usually separate and cooling water circuit must be tailor-made for every single factory.

Cooling towers and water treatment devices are additional mandatory components. After placing water pipelines, cooling tower, cement foundation for the pump body, electrical wiring and chemical monitoring, pH value adapting, finally the

10/10/14 11:27

liquid ring system can operate. Large liquid ring pumps start running continuously 24/7, but with 35°C [95°F] ambient temperature their nominal capacity is reduced by 65%. Expensive to install and to run, not satisfactory in terms of efficiency. Running cost analysis over years identifies such a vacuum system as major expense. Cooling water circuits, heat exchange devices and water flow in pipelines, all loose in performance. The search starts to find an air cooled solution. The low knowledge about vacuum, its confusion with “simply the opposite of compressed air” sometimes leads to wrong choices, just to abandon the huge costs caused by the liquid ring vacuum pump system. And that is how screw pumps are installed, unfortunately the manufactures themselves have little know-how about vacuum, to the point that most screw vacuum pumps are delivered with an oil pump to make the lubricant circulate, although vacuum itself could manage. The missing active sealing on screws, the

PNEUMOFORE FP 4/14.indd 4

impossible repair of the air ends, their forced replacement (usually at high cost) and the missing serious consideration of tropical climate circumstances for the electrical motor reliability, cause considerable troubles. The lack of vacuum in a can production site has drastic consequences, sometimes there is no time to fix, simply new pumps are added. This screw pumps scenario, often ending with water cooling, due to insufficient heat exchange capability, does not represent an improvement, compared to the previous situation with liquid ring pumps. The described sequence is quite popular, vacuum is a “secondary energy”, just a facility. But the repeated unsuccess motivates to contact colleagues, who faced similar circumstances. Some engineers will never admit their incompetence, others will hunt a long term solution. Target is to have always sufficient vacuum-capacity and -level in the production, better if air cooled and mandatory reliable and durable. Here is where Pneumofore appears. With hundreds of centralized

vacuum systems on five continents, we collected experiences over more than 85 years. In this specific case of United Can, the engineers of Pneumofore analyzed the requirements and, after long discussions, two UV50 HC were delivered, obviously air cooled but specifically for Hot Climate (HC), with a larger sized motor of 110 kW each and a dedicated heat exchanger with proportionally dimensioned fan. One of the two pumps is further equipped with a variable speed (VS) device of ABB, which keeps the precise vacuum level in production, covering all the fluctuations of vacuum need, that may appear. The vacuum level was improved from 450 mbar(a) [16,6 inHg V] to 250 mbar(a) [22,5 inHg V], having the UV50 HC VS unit running at 35 Hz, which is the lowest possible frequency, as the range goes up to 60 Hz. Like many other UV pumps near the equator, these two are meant to run continuously for the next few decades, with low power consumption, little need of maintenance, simply with the lowest Life Cycle Cost.

Recycling: bottle washing machine.

At high production bottling rates, today must be a high degree of specialization of the related processes. The washing of recycled bottles, for example, is increasingly performed with technologically advanced machines.

I

n the beverage industry, the automatic washing of recycled bottles has now reached a high level of specialization. In this context, works AKOMAG, company located in Soragna (PR), able to offer a varied production, which includes bottle washing machine, rinsing machine, sterilizers for glass or PET bottles, crate washer and accessories to complement. Very large is the choice of the washer, the potential of which obviously varies in base at the model, and the ranges it is from 100 to 50.000 bph. The modular structure of all installations allows to gradually increase the functions and the level of sophistication, including special washing sections and sanitizing, automatic control of process parameters, security systems, energy recovery, reduction of discharges and automatic sanitization of the parties most important from the point of view of hygiene.

Akomag FP 4/14.indd 3

Start the washing. At low production capacity, the range offer GENESI, available in very small dimensions in order to be inserted in any operating environment. Designed under the indication of the producers with low production capacities, the series has a simple but functional washing cycle, which lowers operating costs (water, energy, detergent) without negatively affecting cleaning bottles to recycle, the complete removal of the labels and their total evacuation outside. The particular ease of use and maintenance, increases productivity and reduces downtime. The modularity of the GENESI series allows at the customer to “build a machine to measure” , adapting it from time to time to different types of use (water, wine, oil, beer, soft drinks). Constructed in accordance with the Machinery Directive (CE), is equipped with all the accessories needed for the proper functioning:

a heat exchanger built with stainless steel tubes arranged geometrically to prevent the deposit of mud or various precipitation that would compromise the performance or, alternatively, a combustion chamber built with direct burner operation. Safety guards and dust cover to protect the unloading of bottles; grouped grease; saving valve for the water network and automatic control of the presence of water in the last rinsing station; electronic speed control; electronic security on the main gearbox that stop the machine in case of overload; spray pumps with casing and impeller made in stainless steel AISI 316 and protective filters; valves for emptying the waste paper and spray tanks; control panel adjustable, made in stainless steel; IP55 electrical plant; gauges and thermometers in visual range of the operator; setting and control of all the machine by “touchscreen”. This are the main amenities that characterize the series.

10/10/14 12:06

The GENESI machine is also arranged for the introduction of detergent and liquid additives in the bath and in the detergent tank, disinfectants and other products in the spraying tanks. Internal spraying (made with selfcleaning rotating nozzles) and external high pressure spraying are easily removable for routine cleaning and maintenance. The loading and unloading of bottles is completely automatic, and perfectly synchronized with the movement of the main chain.

Dry cycle. To streamline the washing cycle , the company has realized the HYDRA series, a series of fully automatic machines which comprise a first station for emptying the bottles followed by pre-washing spraying and first pre-maceration bath. This configuration helps to reduce the pollution of the detergent bath and reduce fuel consumption. The triple station for labels extracting ensures their complete detachment from used bottles, while the rotating filter displaced over the entire width of the machine ensures the evacuation outside. The bottle washing is complete with indoor and outdoor spraying, which occurs with high-pressure cleaner distributed with rotating nozzles self-cleaning and self-centering. To complete rinsing, however, ensure the phase abatement alkalinity followed by spraying with external and internal water network. Built according to the Machinery Directive (CE) also, the series has a different predispositions that increase safety, including: sensors for slowing down and eventually stopping the machine in case of failure or obstruction of bottles on conveyor; detergent introduction and liquid additives in the bath and other products in spray tanks; the automatic loading and unloading of

Akomag FP 4/14.indd 4

the bottles is perfectly synchronized with the movement of the main chain; the economizer valve for the water network and the automatic control of the presence of water on the last rinsing station. Other amenities are important, as: automatic resetting of the chutes for loading and unloading bottles from the control panel; grouped grease; electronic variable speed with remote control (inverter); setting and control of all the machine by “touch-screen; self-centering and self-cleaning rotating spray at high pressure; external spraying easily removable for cleaning and maintenance; valves for emptying baths and spraying tanks; control panel made in stainless steel; IP55 electrical plant; gauges and thermometers in visual range of the operator. At the bottles unloading are arranged safety guards and dust protection. The electronic safety on every gearbox allows at the machine to stop in case of overload. The heat exchanger and pumps are always made in stainless steel.

entire wash cycle, verifying operation via control systems. The tubes of external washing are constructed so as to reduce maintenance to a minimum. But in case it will be necessary, the dismantling and cleaning are very simple. The regulation of the temperature in the tanks is automated through a modulating proportional pneumatic system, which offers a guarantee of accuracy and safety of operation. The main motor, oversized, ensures a long lasting efficiency by minimizing the mechanical wear. The electronic variable frequency allows to manage the main engines installed in HYDRA HP series via remote control. The automatic press for the collection of labels evacuated from the detergent bath is full of a recovery system of the detergent solution that accumulates in the pressing phase. AKOMAG has dedicated several years to the creation of bottle washing machines and the high quality standard achieved by all its production, advanced technology and timely after-sales service, has allowed at this company to come in several primary and manufacturing with the certainty of having created a safe machinery and Quality for Various needs. This undertaking was given by all its facilities, from design to engineering, from the search for the most innovative materials to the constant testing of the products in the works. With this AKOMAG mission, every day thought to be better and invest in quality, with the knowledge to do a good job.

Very high productivity and automation in the wash meet in the HP model in the same series. Despite the sophistication , just an operator to remotely manage the

y implementing its ECO Booster™ service on four of Midwest Coca-Cola’s SBO14/14 blow moulding machines, encompassing various bottle formats, Sidel has helped the bottler to make significant reductions in both the blowing pressure and the blowing ovens’ use of electricity. Across ten different bottle formats, the average reduction in blowing pressure

SIDEL FP 4/14.indd 3

was 45.9% (the lowest being 19.4% and the highest 50.7%). The average reduction in the ovens’ energy consumption was 22.3% (with the lowest saving being 15.7% and the highest being 38.1%).

Improved efficiency and reduced footprint The Midwest Coca-Cola Bottling Company is located in Eagan, Minnesota.

The company manufactures bottles and distributes Coca-Cola products throughout much of the Midwestern area of the United States. The company naturally wanted to maximise its profitability by increasing its production efficiency and minimising its operational costs. Yet, at the same time, the company was also looking to reduce the environmental impact of its processes

and that of its resource use. Midwest called in Sidel, the leading provider of PET solutions for liquid packaging, in the hope of achieving tangible cost and energy savings through a detailed overview of existing line conditions during full production. Mr. Jim Tierney, Maintenance Manager of The Midwest Coca-Cola Bottling Company, explains: “Reduced resource use means reduced costs, which is a sustainability win-win for us. For this reason we are always looking to speak with our partners about new innovations that can help us achieve this goal. The Sidel ECO Booster is a great example of this, resulting in a significant reduction of our blowing air pressure and oven electricity use across four of our lines.”

Complete range of ECO Services To maximise energy savings for customers, Sidel has developed a complete range of line improvement options and upgrades with a focus on quantifiable savings and quick return on investment (ROI), calling heavily upon its vast experience in PET packaging production technology. Its ECO Booster service analyses a line to identify potential opportunities for savings using these technologies. Efficiency measurement tools can be installed that automatically record the consumption of all utilities (air, water, electricity and carbon dioxide) by individual machines, lines, production zones or even an entire plant. As well as measuring consumption and calculating energy costs per bottle produced, the service and tools provide the ability to facilitate correlation between consumption levels and different production procedures (start-up, shut-down, changeover and cleaning). This information can then be used by beverage producers to effectively support initiatives for reducing waste.

SIDEL FP 4/14.indd 4

Comprehensive service of measurement, advice and improvement At the outset of the ECO Booster service, on-site production conditions are fully measured and analysed by a Sidel Services specialist carefully gauging the use of electricity and air pressure. For Midwest Coca-Cola the next step was a mechanical testing of the blow moulders’ sub-assemblies. Be-

cause when it comes to the use of energy within busy production lines, the blow moulder is usually the main cause, often accounting for as much as 70% of overall energy consumption. Furthermore, a sizable portion of that consumption can be attributed to the provision of compressed air during the blowing process. The process and technical qualities of the package, the quality of the air and cooling water, and the overall production environment of the machine were then carefully checked. Based on the findings of the tests, an action plan and servicing schedule specific to the customer was then proposed. These were accompanied by an estimate for energy and cost savings and anticipated the ROI forecast. With the proposals agreed by Midwest Coca-Cola, a plan of action was implemented. In addition to the servicing itself, Sidel can also put in place consumption monitoring and process control tools as well as additional laboratory or productioncontrol equipment. Maintenance Manager Jim Tierney commented: “Having the Sidel experts work with our own guys to adapt our equipment brought peace of mind that the intervention would be quick and easy, and ultimately led to a short return to production and faster ROI.” Editors’ Note: The images within this document are for illustrative purposes only and should not be used for reproduction.

BEMA WINS THE QUARTER-PALLETS CHALLENGE

S

ILKWORM, the flagship brand of BEMA’s industrial automation, has been at the forefront of the stretch wrapping and pallet conditioning evolution since its introduction in 2004. The SILKWORM product portfolio and range is well known by its customers for combining complete flexibility with high-quality stretch wrap and pallet conditioning at high production speeds, all while preserving product integrity, efficiency and safety. Now BEMA has once again collected and won the latest challenge of the target market: the successful management of the quarter-pallets and mixed products. Spumador S.p.A. (Refresco), the leading Italian producer of carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks with 5 factories and 22 production lines has recently taken successful delivery of an integrated system that simultaneously manages Euro pallets, Euro half pallets, quarter-pallets handling open trays with single loose bottles, either coming from the existing production lines or open trays with bottles of mixed products manually loaded from an off-line multiple conveying system. The system includes a SILKWORM TURBO (capacity up to 160 pallets/ hour) with dust-proof top cover applicator for the stretch wrap and conditioning of quarter-pallets and

Euro half pallets as well as a station for the coupling of four quarter-pallets or two half pallets. This versatile system also includes a station for the positioning of the grouped pallets onto a mother pallet along with a SILKWORM LS system with a capacity of up to 60 Euro pallet couplings per hour for the optimal pallet conditioning of the final product.

In a few words: speed, quality and flexibility, all contained in a compact layout having a minimal footprint. BEMA presented this same kind of innovative system at the drinktec, the world’s leading trade fair for the beverage and liquid food industry which runned last year from September 16th thru the 20th in Munich, Germany.

C

ompanies operating in the Food & Beverage sector have to face a more and more competitive market and are required to offer a constantly diversified range of products, in order to meet the consumer’s disparate exigencies. Therefore, the solutions implemented by packaging machine manufacturers are expected to be innovative, cost-effective, efficient, sustainable and able to realize appealing packages. Smiflexi range of automatic packers provides the end user all the technical and functional specifications required to manage production cycles efficiently and economically and to enable quick switch from one format to another. Among the new opportunities offered by Smiflexi division there is the innovative Easy-Load cardboard blanks magazine, an accessory device (available both for the wraparound case packers of the WP series and the heat-shrinkwrappers of the SK series) which features considerable advantages from an operating and functional point of view. With Easy-Load the operator can easily load cardboard blanks

SMI FP 4/14.indd 3

- stacked horizontally in uniform groups - because the feeding belt of the magazine is positoned at the same working height as the packer’s infeed belt, rather than under it. The innovative solution devised by SMI eliminates the disadvantages related to the manual loading of the cardboard blanks magazine, which force the operator to bend his/her body continuously to place the blanks in the bottom part of the machine. The operator just places the cardboard blank stacks on the outermost roller conveyor so that the automatic control system can perform all the subsequent steps. Thanks to specific sensors, the layout and feed of the cardboard blanks on the conveyor belts fitted with the motorized roller and their loading into the packer’s magazine is, in fact, fully automated. Moreover, with the innovative EasyLoad system, even the unloading of the cardboard blanks is performed automatically, after processing a certain format, through a series of steps carried out in reverse order as compared to the loading steps. Fridge packs realized by SMI wraparound packers The technology used in the Easy-Load magazine also features the great advantage of ensuring fluid and constant picking operations with a wide range of cardboard blanks having a thickness between 0.5 mm and 5 mm Thanks to the innovative Easy-Load cardboard blanks magazine, Smiflexi wrap-around packers of the WP are able to meet multiple

exigencies: they can pack different types of products (glass, PET, cans, etc.) in different kinds of containers, of large or small size: kraft-paper boxes, microwave or corrugated cardboard boxes. Smiflexi wrap-around packers of the WP series can pack bottles and cans in cardboard boxes, called Fridge Packs, specifically designed to fit into the limited space offered by fridge compartments. Thanks to an innovative design, a pre-scored breakaway panel allows the consumer to conveniently take out of the package just the bottle or can he actually needs. The box thus becomes a dispenser of the products included in the packs. The technology used in the Smiflexi “Easy-Load” magazine features the great advantage of using Kraftpaper with a wrap-around packer. Kraft paper ensures a solid packaging, despite its reduced thickness. The polish, white surface of kraft paper is an optimal solution, ensuring excellent printability and appealing graphics, in order to draw the customer’s attention on the products displayed on the shelves at the sales outlets.

ALTECH Labelling Systems for Industry

L

abels are important in today’s world. Consumers choose the widest range of goods in the supermarket thanks to their labels, which associate them with the ads seen on TV. Thousands of brands and millions of products, with billions of packages chosen every day with no help from sales staff except at the till. The label is the “silent salesman”. Cosmetics, foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, detergents, drinks; products in vials, bottles, cases and jars, in turn packaged into boxes, packs and pallets for safe transport and storage. Behind all this are the selfadhesive or linerless labelling machine, working swiftly and with perfect synchronization together with other units of the production and packaging process. To decorate, mark and code each single product with data and expiry information. An overwhelming job, if you think about it, but one which is reliably handled by the ultimate in high-tech equipment. Like ALTECH labellers: labelling machines, in line labelling systems for the most diverse packaging types imaginable, and label print&apply units.

ALTECH FP 4/14.indd 3

The background of ALTECH The first ALTECH labelling machine started production in September 1991. It was the result of the commitment of a small group of people whose joint intention was to produce innovative self-adhesive labelling machines. Advanced Labelling Technologies, ALTECH was the result. Nowadays millions of self-adhesive labels are applied by ALTECH systems every day. From the factory in Bareggio, close to Milan, these labellers reach purchasers located in all five continents. Industrial labellers, self-adhesive labelling machines, linerless systems, sleeve applicators, made up of simple labelling heads that can be integrated into existing packaging lines, or complete in-line systems equipped with conveyors and adjusting, orienting, spacing, checking, ejecting and sorting units which meet the customers’ most sophisticated production requirements. These are complemented by real-time print&apply systems, of which ALTECH is a leading, innovating company in the sector of material identification, codification and

traceability. ALTECH self-adhesive labellers are versatile, flexible, reliable and performing, the result of its twenty-year experience as a curious, open and smart market player. A company relying on its expert staff and resources to continuously enhance the “Advanced Labelling Technologies” it was named after: ALTECH.

ALTECH mission In order to build excellent labelling systems, it is important to have ex-

perience, organizational skills and the right know-how, to pay attention to detail and to have a passion for mechanics. Labelling machines are the final element of a packaging line and qualify the previous stages of the process by applying a label that will convey the image of that particular product. For this reason, their manufacturing technology plays a crucial role. But those who turn to ALTECH for their requirements will also encounter the capacity to listen and learn, since the first impulse towards innovation often comes from an ongoing dialogue with customers and the market, a major challenge in the labelling machine industry. “To solve labelling problems in an innovative way” is ALTECH’s tag line.

The value of ALTECH labelling machines Quality choices lie behind every ALTECH labelling machine, but they go well beyond Italian and international safety and production regulations (EC, UL, IQ/OQ, GAMP...). ALTECH utilizes only quality materials; high resistance alloys, stainless steel screws and extremely reliable electronic and pneumatic components supplied by world-class companies. Each labelling machine has been designed, when possible and appropriate, to be modular and expandable. All elements can be readily accessed and are easy to disassemble. Every detail is always designed, controlled and codified, and every machine is supplied with diagrams and the list of relevant parts. Suppliers are chosen according to strict criteria to ensure the reliability as well as the availability of their products throughout the world. The electronic parts have been designed so that all ALTECH industrial systems are user-friendly under any working conditions. For each labelling machine manufactured by ALTECH, a specific technical file is created and stored in

ALTECH FP 4/14.indd 4

the company’s archive. It contains its designing criteria, components, and the outcome of the final tests carried out with the products provided by the customer. The machine is supplied with thorough documentation, including the relevant use and maintenance instructions and a catalogue of spare parts to provide support over time.

ALTECH Range and Solutions Decorate, inform, promote, codify, seal, identify. All this is possible by applying a label through the automatic application. With hundreds of solutions, all tested and reliable, automatic labeling machines ALTECH can do so easily through a system of automatic labeling inserted into the wrapping of products with precision and accuracy, resolving all issues related to the shape of goods or characteristics and performance of the packaging line. And if among these solutions there is none that serves the customer, it develops a special ALTECH’s to solve even the most complex problem of labeling.

Its standard range encompasses the following products: The ALstep labelling head is a compact-sized and low-cost applicator for self-adhesive labels, which can be easily integrated into already existing packaging lines. ALstep is based on a robust, reliable mechanical structure; it can be fitted into particularly restricted areas, also thanks to the side access web threading allowing a fast, easy label change over. ALstep can hold label rolls up to 300 mm of diameter for a long operating time; it is equipped with a separate control box with cooling fan which makes it possible to operate it in harsh industrial environments. ALstep comes in both S and M versions, for label widths up to 100 and 200 mm. respectively. Its maximum label dispensing speed is as high as 30 m/min. (20 m/min. in the M version) thanks to a microprocessorcontrolled stepper motor enabling the operator to enter all labelling parameters by means of the display

11/09/14 09:55

and function keys. Such parameters are stored on EEPROM and automatically recalled by switching on the machine. An E version is particularly cheap. ALritma is a high performance selfadhesive label applicator designed to be integrated into packaging lines where production speed and reliability are primary needs. ALritma is based on an innovative mechanical structure which can match great sturdiness with versatility. It is available in three versions, S, M and L, for label widths up to 100, 200 and 300 mm. respectively. The label driving group has been designed to exploit the stepper motor features to the full, by guaranteeing an accurate label positioning even at the highest production speeds; the side access has made the web threading easier. The label applicator is controlled by a powerful microprocessor, with a display “Touch Screen”, which allow for the running of advanced

ALTECH FP 4/14.indd 5

weighing

functions by relieving the operator from complicated mechanical adjustments and considerably speeding up the format changeovers. An ALritma X has been recently developed for extremely high performances. The ALline is an in-line system which can be configured for the automatic labeling of cylindrical, elliptical or rectangular products; moreover, it can suit specific requirements, such as the application of tamper-proof seals or labelling of singularly shaped products. All ALline linear labellers have equally been designed according to cutting edge designing criteria which, in strict compliance with CE regulations, make every machine suitable for even the harshest of conditions, guarantee great labelling accuracy even at high production speeds and feature a high degree of operatorfriendliness, as the start and change-over operations are particularly

simple and intuitive. In more detail, ALline is based on the “built-in” philosophy, which means that all components are “included” in the structure/cabinet, well protected against dirt and accidental bumps. The grey (or stainless steel) structure is extremely sturdy and, thanks to its eye-catching design, it qualifies the whole packaging line. ALcode units are systems for the printing/application of self-adhesive labels. They may be interfaced with a computer and can apply the just-printed label to both still and moving products. For label printing, ALcode can integrate the various thermal transfer engines made from the Japanese SATO (or compatible). Which has specifically developed them for the use on automatic applicators: resolution of 8 or 12 dots/ mm., up to 300 mm/sec. of print speed, 4 “, 5 “ or 6 “ of printable width. In every ALcode print&apply

system, the mechanics, pneumatics and electronics have been suitably integrated to meet the typical requirements of machines operating in an industrial environment, which need to combine reliability, userfriendliness, accessibility, and interchange ability. A range of standard devices has been engineered for the application of labels, thus enabling ALcode to apply labels in any position and at any linear speed. The ALpharma labelling systems have been specially devised by ALTECH for pharmaceutical products. Based on the wide experience gained in designing its innovative labelling systems, which have proven extremely successful in all market sectors, ALTECH has developed the ALpharma line, whose particularly advanced features fully comply with the strict rules and regulations of the pharmaceutical industry. The ALpharma models are: ALpharma A - for vials and small bottles. The labelling is performed from tray to tray, “in-the-star-wheel. Up to 150 products/min ALpharma B - for shaped cases, with both bar code labels (tags, vignettes) and tamper evident angle labels folded along the flaps (up to 200 products/min). ALpharma C for in-line wrap-around labelling of

small cylindrical bottles. Up to 250/ min ALmatic is a semiautomatic applicator of self-adhesive labels for cylindrical products. Its easy functioning provides for the manual loads of the product in the labelling position by the operator who activates the control lever. So ALmatic provides to the rotation of the product and to the application of the label till a completely happened adhesion. Thanks to the ergonomics of the system and to the presence of templates of comparison ALmatic allows an exact labelling, making easier the manual operations of the placing of the product. ALsleeve is an automatically-operated system designed to apply plastic, heat shrink sleeves to provide body decoration and/or effective tamper evident seals on caps and lids for food, cosmetic and chemical products. Sleeves are obtained from a flat, continuous tubing made of heat shrinkable plastic material (PET, PVC, Polypropylene) wrapped in a roll, which is first cut at a programmable height (or at a specific mark) and then applied onto the product with a synchronized mechanism activated by a product tracing photocell.

ALTECH Service ALTECH machines are used in every industry field, from food to cosmetics, from pharmaceutics to chemistry. Today the company distributes its products on the Italian territory through a direct sale and service structure, whereas a network of 80 dealers, trained both in promotion and in technical service, provide a qualified distribution in 50 different countries in Europe and overseas. All packed products such as food, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics etc. need to be decorated, identified, sealed and marked, in order to meet the requirements for their sale, transportation, storage and handling in general. In the majority of cases the answer is a label, and usually an adhesive label. That is why ALTECH systems are so well diffused, why we are often consulted and why our suggestions are often followed. Our Sale Agents are real consultants and our Distributors are trained and motivated professionals who are sensitive to customers’ problems and organized to satisfy customers from all points of view. They know about logistics and packaging problems and they know the materials they are dealing with. They can outline the best configuration for every labelling problem, matching the standard modules included in our catalogue in order to offer custom-made solutions, supplying nothing more, but above all nothing less than what is needed. Once installed, an ALTECH labelling machine is serviced right through its life by expert technical staff that provides repairs and implementation, if required. This is how the success of our systems translates into success for our distributors, and benefit for our customers, in a synergic relationship of mutual cooperation. Kingmar. The specialist for fresh cheese machines

Many dairies provide fresh cheese in their product range. The market is growing steadily, but the machines lagged behind for a long time until the foundation of Kingmar. The Dutch company makes its mark by developing and manufacturing machines and production lines purpose-built for fresh cheese. The emphasis is set on a good cost-performance ratio in terms of low investment and low maintenance cost for powerful machines.

F

ully committed to fresh cheese Kingmar originated from the JH-Group which is located in Holland and specialising in metal and machine construction (for further information, see www.jurryhekkingmetaal.nl). Based on many years of experience with machines for fresh cheese production, Kingmar has been founded as a new brand. Jurry Hekking, the owner of Kingmar, says: “Of course there are machines for producing and processing fresh cheese. Unfortunately, most of them are not especially designed for it. Kingmar is different, because it takes care of the product´s fragility.”

surprises after installation and the production can start right away. The complete range can be used in combination with other machines or on its own.

Kingmar filter press The Kingmar filter press is a special system to produce fresh cheese in a so-called “hang up” way by using filter press bags. As soon as the bags are filled with the product, the side walls of the press slowly move

towards each other. The percentage of dry matter determines the required time. Being built of stainless steel, the machine is very robust and offers a powerful operating system.

More continuity and efficiency The bags can be filled either manually or semi-automatically. In that case, the filling will be even more consistent. Also, the machine can be connected to CIP cleaning after-

Very product- and user-friendly All Kingmar machines have been extensively tested by experienced cheese manufacturers concerning their ease of use and functionality. Wherever necessary, adjustments have been executed. This ensures that Kingmar machines are, in the end, a real big improvement in comparison to current systems. Another major advantage of Kingmar is that a complete system is purchased. Once bought, there won´t be any

wards. Therefore, during the whole production process human hands are no longer required. This reduces the risk of contamination and saves labour. For this reason, the semiautomatic filter press of Kingmar is an ideal solution for manufacturers who aim to produce fresh cheese in a more efficient and consistent way.

Kingmar washer After emptying, the filter press bags can be easily cleaned with the Kingmar washer. This industrial machine is especially manufactured for a large number of bags to be cleaned and disinfected in an efficient and quick manner. The washing drum is designed for preserving the life-time of the filter press bags. For ease of use, the washing programs can be individually compiled. All in all, the Kingmar washer is an indispensable machine for hygienic production.

Kingmar filling machine and mixer The Kingmar filling machine is designed to quickly and hygienically process large amounts of fresh cheese into smaller portions. By using the justification “height”, the machine can be even easier filled and emptied. The Kingmar mixer allows for merging fresh cheese with ingredients like e.g. herbs. There has been a lot of attention paid to the requirement of preserving the specific structure of the product while mixing it. By that way, an ex-

cellent machine has been invented. Also, the mixer can be combined with the filling machine for an even greater ease of use.

Kingmar moulding machine The Kingmar moulding machine is definitely a very unique machine due to the fact that it is able to create any shape required. The funnel drain provides beautiful, wellstocked products. As a result, all of them have an equal size and weight. The transportation unit forwards them immediately, so that they just need to be packed up. The machine includes various shapes and it is also possible to fill the fresh cheese products in an individual way. Of

course, the structure of the fresh cheese is being preserved during the whole process.

Kingmar filling machine For example, it is possible to fill in peppers or olives and stuff puff pastry by using the foot or hand pedal of the Kingmar filling machine. Also, multiple people can be integrated in the work process. In case there are large amounts of fresh cheese or similar products to be processed, it is possible to combine the Kingmar filling machine with the moulding machine. By that way, you are even faster and more flexible.

Kingmar Experience Center If you would like to try Kingmar machines – for example with your own product – you are cordially invited to visit the Kingmar Experience Center. There you have the chance to test them in detail and without time pressure. Of course, we supply plenty of guidance, explanation and support. Be assured, this is the ideal way to determine whether Kingmar machines suit your product range.

DELICIOUS ICE CREAM IN A DISTINCTIVE PACK

L

edo, the largest producer of ice cream in Croatia, is reaping the benefits of having a bespoke pack created together with RPC Superfos Balkan.

Thanks to its great taste and unique packaging, the easily-recognisable family ice cream Quattro is frequently added to shopping carts throughout Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, and Serbia. It is sold in a sleek, transparent plastic pack displaying four different ice cream flavours including a mouth-watering combination of almond, mandarin, lavender and crème caramel. Each flavour is beautifully decorated with a topping and a sauce which also need to be clear to see straight from the display freezer at the supermarket. The transparent packaging solution for Quattro has been made especially for the Croatian company Ledo, and its subsidiary Frikom in

RPC FP 4/14.indd 3

Serbia. Both are market leaders in the production of ice cream and distribution of frozen food in their respective countries. Ledo was looking for a special pack for Quattro and approached RPC Superfos Balkan, the region’s leading provider of injection moulded packaging.

With its in-house mould shop and highly skilled staff, RPC Superfos Balkan met Ledo’s demand for creative solutions. Tomislav Kitonic, Managing Director of Ledo, says: “Our marketing team worked closely with RPC Superfos Balkan to develop and produce a totally new and remarkable packaging solution. During the brainstorm and workshop phase, RPC Superfos Balkan demonstrated great creativity and flexibility - every wish we had regarding the packaging could be realised. Unquestionably, the packaging solution adds value to our brand.” The pack comes in two sizes, 1650 ml and 900 ml, and has round cor-

ners and a lid that is easy to open and reclose. The four ice cream combinations are ready to serve, straight from the freezer to the dinner table, while its shape allows efficient storage and easy transportation. Ledo is already a household brand and the Quattro range has further reinforced the company’s market position. “Together with RPC Superfos Balkan, we have created an ice cream pack with a strong distinctive character. Everybody here knows Quattro – not least because of the packaging – and the popularity of the range is reflected in sales figures as well,” concludes Tomislav Kitonic. RPC Superfos Balkan, formerly Helioplast and based in Bosnia & Herzegovina, became part of the RPC Superfos cluster in December 2013. The company recently opened a new production facility equipped with the latest technology.

A RANGE OF INNOVATIONS FOR THE DOUBLE ANNIVERSARY YEAR

T

heegarten-Pactec is showcasing a new unit which groups individual products for secondary packaging and completes any product formation. Defective products are rejected without affecting the grouping operation. The grouping unit buffers any empty cycles until the right number of products for transferring to the secondary wrapping machine has been reached. The company developed this technology for the new generation of the HCW4/ FPC5 packaging machine, which is premiering at the trade fair. Theegarten-Pactec has a total of twelve exhibits at its stand, A21 in hall 4. Visitors to the stand can experience the latest developments in the machine range for the wrapping of small pieced confectionery items. The HCW4 wraps preformed candies in bottom-fold wrap. This style of wrapping is usually combined with secondary packaging. At this year’s interpack, TheegartenPactec is presenting the FPC5 horizontal flowpack machine, thereby bringing to bear one of the HCW4’s new features which enables it to be linked up with continuous-operation wrapping machines such as the FPC5.

THEEGARTEN FP.indd 3

Normally, entire product formations have to be rejected if a single product is found to be defective when it reaches the secondary packaging machine interface, resulting in the loss of perfectly good products. For manufacturers, the HCW4/FPC5 combination means they no longer need to write off any rejects during grouping. Any individual products that are not wrapped or spliced will already have been rejected by the HCW4 during full machine operation. The new solution is based on a machine with three grouping units, each equipped with its own servo motor. The flexibility and capacity of the design serves as a buffer and absorbs any empty cycles. The latest model in the HCW range features a number of other innovations besides. Products are removed from the removal wheel while wrapping materials are fed in there simultaneously. This method of organising the wrapping process minimises the number of transitions, thus ensuring particularly gentle handling of the products. The HCW4 is also a more compact machine than its predecessor and increases the wrapping capacity from 1,300 to 1,500 operating cycles

per minute. Theegarten-Pactec is also bringing its CWM2 wrapping machine for chocolate products to interpack. Compared with the previous model, this one provides a much higher level of user accessibility. As before the model update, this wrapping machine offers a variety of different wrapping styles. The improved ergonomics make it quicker to change between wrapping styles and formats, while also making them more reproducible. At the exhibition stand, a CWM2 wraps dome shaped products in top twist style. A gondola storage system feeds the machine. Another CWM2 wraps Neapolitans in envelope fold. Theegarten-Pactec offers manufacturers twenty wrapping styles across its machine portfolio. One of them, vienna-fruit fold, is being showcased with two new capacity figures. The maximum operating speed is now up from 400 to 800 products per minute. The rise has been made possible because the MCC wrapping machine is set up to facilitate vienna-fruit fold wrapping.

29/01/14 15.24

PACKAGING LABELLING

The MCC is the first continuous-operation machine to offer vienna-fruit fold wrapping. At interpack, Theegarten-Pactec and LoeschPack are again demonstrating their expertise as system suppliers for confectionery wrapping. The FPC5/280 horizontal flowpack machine from Theegarten-Pactec wraps chocolate bars in flow packs before transferring the products to an LTM-K from LoeschPack, which adds secondary packaging in the form of individual cardboard boxes. A classic in the field of forming, cutting and wrapping machines that has had a substantial market

WEIGHING

impact over many decades is the U machine range. Theegarten-Pactec is displaying the U1-DCW at this year’s interpack, boasting a new operating speed up from 1,600 to 2,000 articles per minute. The U machine range premiered at the fifth interpack in 1969. It was originally developed by Rose-Theegarten in Cologne. Having been established by Justus and Franz Theegarten in 1934, the year 2014 marks the 80th anniversary of Rose-Theegarten’s foundation. Twenty years ago their successors acquired Dresden-based company Pactec, which belonged to the GDR’s sta-

te-owned combine Nagema prior to German reunification. The long tradition of this part of the company’s history is also represented at the exhibition stand: the EK4 wraps preformed candies in double twist wrap and remains unparalleled to this day with its 2,300 operating cycles per minute. An EK1 is also on display as an example of the company’s retrofitting service. The first EK1 was showcased by Nagema in 1981.

T

his year Technoblock is celebrating 20 years of activity in the manufacturing of refrigeration units for applications in the field of controlled temperature. Starting with a small staff, the company can now count on a sales network located throughout the world. The Technoblock brand is known everywhere and stands for the variety and flexibility of its products. It offers many solutions that are already available in the catalog as well as solutions which are tailored to fully meeting customer’s requirements. Refrigeration is a process that occurs through the reduction of fluid and solid temperatures in general. Through this process it is possible to preserve goods temporarily which would otherwise be perishable in the short term. Refrigeration is vital in the food industry, and should only be done by experts in the field, since the foods, owing to their diversity, require specific treatment temperature and humidity according to their nature. Market demands require refrigeration systems that are both efficient and reliable. This has lead Technoblock to produce a wide range of high quality refrigerating products that help installers and technicians working in the field to offer their customers the most correct solution as Cold Solutions. The various options for plants are defined as customized since they meet the customer’s expectations by giving extra benefits in terms of yields and energy savings. Tecnoblock’s sales network is made

TECHNOBLOCK FP 4/14.indd 3

up of professionals. It can boast of a great deal of experience in the refrigeration industry and provides consultancies for projects dedicated to the different conservation needs of the different countries of the world. Every request is specifically studied by Technoblock’s R&D department in order to propose optimal solutions for the various applications and especially a speedy and efficient aftersales service. Technoblock products are assembled with high quality components by experienced workers. Particular attention is paid to the development of new techniques, as well as to the use of new materials, in accordance with European legislation. The installation and maintenance that usually entail important costs may be performed in a very simple and fast way. The products are designed with a “view” to saving energy and reducing consumption following an environment-friendly philosophy. “We have arrived at celebrating an important birthday”, says Claudio Lovato, Technoblock’s Commercial Director. “20 years mark a significant milestone for our company which has, in recent years, witnessed a radical change in the management as a result of the economic and financial crisis that hit the world economy. With the new management, the company has achieved a more structured and industrial organization, with welldefined objectives and has made itself more competitive in the marketplace. “The refrigeration market”,

continued Lovato, “has seen many companies in trouble as a result of market restrictions. Access to credit has become increasingly more difficult and together with other factors has turned a consumer crisis into a financial crisis. Small-and-medium sized enterprises such as Technoblock were the first ones to be effected. Technoblock was lucky in that it offered top-of-the-range products, which are positioned in price and quality in a market segment quite appealing for some customers.” A relaunch of the company recently took place mainly involving private capital investors who believed in the company and in its potential. “What is important”, Lovato affirms, “is that it has arrived to this point with a high technical potential, to have a company that with operational cost optimization has been able to invest in technology that allows the company to go forward”. These 20 years have gained the company a place in the world of manufacturers of industrial refrigerators. The strengthened and improved company has invested significantly in a relaunch of its products, strategically reviewing the range of products in order to better meet the demands of the market. The optimization and the review of the product range’s design are breathing new vitality into the brand that shall shortly, as the next leap in quality, undergo a makeover in order to better reflect the company’s relaunch.

Minimal material, maximum functionality: Südpack introduces new generation Veraplex film

Eco-sustainable options – outstanding product protection also with laminated paper and minimal film

A

t this year’s interpack, Südpack Verpackungen GmbH & Co. KG presented Veraplex for the first time. The completely new film generation offers maximum product protection with minimal film thickness. Although the film is extremely thin, it provides outstanding puncture resistance with an extremely high oxygen/aroma barrier. The film is suitable for products with high mechanical requirements and for corrosive bulk products. Film laminated with paper creates a very eco-sustainable packaging. The amount of film is kept to a minimum without sacrificing product protection properties.

“Veraplex is the film of the future,” said Südpack Managing Partner Johannes Remmele. “The material achieves an outstanding thickness to function performance ratio that is unprecedented in today’s market. It’s a revolution in film.” The film has impressive properties and many possibilities for presentation. It is highly transparent and can be designed using flexographic and rotogravure printing processes.

Veraplex Craft: optimal combination of film and paper Veraplex Craft laminates film with paper. Only 25 µm thick, the film improves eco-sustainability while maintaining the same product protection properties. Veraplex com-

Südpack FP 4/14.indd 3

bined with paper also scores points when it comes to product presentation. The renewable resource ensures stability yet has a natural look and feel. Consumers instantly recognize the ecological advantages of the packaging – a persuasive factor at point of sale. Options include a laser-cut window that offers a direct view of the product inside and reinforces consumer trust. Veraplex Craft combines the strengths of both materials: The functionality of film and consumer acceptance of paper as a packaging material. Veraplex Craft can be processed as a tubular bag and as a lid film on standard packaging machines.

Wide range of applications, efficient application Veraplex is available as a laminate or a paperless co-extruded lid film. Thanks to its excellent mechanical properties, it can be processed on all standard machines without sacrificing performance capabilities. Its minimal thickness and reduced weight means that a roll holds twice as much material. This makes for longer runtimes with fewer roll changes during the production process. Veraplex’s high aroma barrier and puncture resistance make it especially suited for packing demanding bulk products. The film can be used in bulk packaging for industrial processing in the B2B sector, as well as B2C packaging for consumers. In both cases, the extremely thin film creates an optimum packaging to product ratio – even for a small number of units. Stable, packable bags are laminated with paper. Their degree of stiffness varies depending on requirements. Veraplex is also available in white for opaque packaging that protects the contents from light. “We designed and developed Veraplex based on a unique technology,” Remmele said. “Interpack as the packaging industry’s leading trade event was the ideal setting to introduce our new film to the market.”

T

he Adelphi Group has redesigned its range of filling equipment to meet the demanding needs of the food manufacturing industry. Using state-of-the-art technology and introducing all the technical improvements needed to make the new range of machines more hygienic, user friendly and higher-performing; Adelphi has responded to food manufacturers ongoing requirements for increased production output, lower operating costs and greater standards of hygiene with the launch of its System F range of innovative inline fillers. Implementing machine design guidelines specific to the food manufacturing industry all processing modules were designed with hygiene in mind:

ADELPHI FP 4/14.indd 3

❱ All surfaces of the closed box section machine frame are at least 15 degrees off horizontal eliminating any unwanted pooling of product and allowing the machine to be hosed down; there is also clear access under the machine body so a high level of cleanliness can be maintained ❱ The product tank has internal angles of no less than 135 degrees to eliminate difficult to clean areas ❱ the product tank can even be rotated rearwards by 90 degrees to allow easy access for cleaning at floor level by an operator ❱ A quick release and quick strip pumping and filling system can be easily removed for thorough cleaning ❱ The purging trough has open angled surfaces and no crevices

Along with hygienic design a key market trend in the food manufacturing industry in recent years has been flexibility. Flexibility is a term food manufacturers can use to specify the adaptability a machine has to run various products or containers which differ in size and shape. The improvements introduced with this new range of filling machines have allowed a reduction in both product and container change over times, with relative maximisation of production output. The modular design of the quick strip and easy clean System F pumping and filling system means that downtime whilst carrying out a product change over is significantly reduced. All contact parts can be removed and replaced within 10 minutes, with no tools, and, if needed, contact parts can then be stripped to their component parts in just a further 5 minutes. The machines design is such that product change over’s can be achieved extremely quickly by simply exchanging used contact parts with a pre-sterilised set. Container change over’s can be done in an instant and the System F range offers the option for this to be fully automated. The required fill volume

10/10/14 10:15

PACKAGING LABELLING

can be pre-set by the recipe recall from the HMI touch screen and the ‘Y’ axis nozzle movement allows for quicker container change over adding to the machines productivity. Containers ranging in size from 100ml to 25 litres can be filled on one machine simply by interchanging the pumping module as required. Offering the most innovative technology currently available on the market, new synchronised SERVO drive technology ensures consistency of fill volume with the ability to adjust the filling and nozzle speed and nozzle height quickly and efficiently. All of these factors combine to save precious production time, and to maximise the output achieved. In addition, energy saving drive systems ensure that System F delivers significant energy cost savings when

weighing

compared to a similar pneumatically driven filling machine. The machine could pay for itself in energy savings alone in less than six years. System F will be on display to the

public for the first time in Hall 4 at Interpack 2014. The filler will take pride of place on Stand E39-10. For more information please visit: www.adelphi.uk.com/system

Millad NX 8000 gives PP a clarity boost that overcomes the traditional undesirable milky appearance of PP in thermoforming, thereby creating highly-attractive transparency similar to PET for sheet and thermoformed applications such as meat trays, clamshell containers and lids. Ultra Clear PP also offers important performance benefits such as mono-material packaging, easy seal, chemical resistance, impact resistance and heat resistance. The material’s excellent heat resistance further extends application opportunities by enabling microwaveability and hot fill capability.

MILLIKEN FP 4/14.indd 3

Proven statistics support Ultra Clear PP’s productivity improvements, energy savings, low carbon footprint and cost-efficiency compared to alternative plastics. For example, at-booth samples will demonstrate its ability to offer a 17.8% weight saving compared to PET based food trays, with possibilities to produce 70 trays from 1kg of PP compared with 57 trays from 1kg of PET. “Ultra Clear PP based food trays can be recycled, unlike multi-material or multilayered PET trays which are normally not recycled and therefore end-up in landfills. Mono-material PP trays are easy to recycle and the recycled PP is suitable for use in further applications such as automotive, furniture, containers and appliances,” comments Sami T.K. Palanisami, Milliken’s Marketing & Sales Manager Plastic Additives. Following the promise of exceptional clarity for PP, at Emballage 2014 Milliken will turn its attention to the achievement of UV protection for PET packaging. ClearShield® Colorless UV Absorbers create a new UV protection

performance standard for PET that extends the shelf life of packaged materials and protects brand image for food, beverages and consumer products. Approved for food contact applications by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)*, ClearShield also overcomes the deficiencies of traditional technologies, including unwanted color, migration, bloom and plate-out. Visit Milliken at Emballage 2014 Booth 6C088. *All components of ClearShield® UV390B have been reviewed by the EFSA and are listed in the Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 for use in food contact plastics. Specific use guidelines can be obtained from a Milliken regulatory representative.

High technology heat for over 50 years

I

CI CALDAIE – 50 YEARS OF HISTORY ICI CALDAIE is a company with over 50 years of history and experience in energy management and heat production. It was established in 1958 as a manufacturing company for the production of steel boilers with a high content of water for industrial processes. This is a sector in which it currently holds a worldwide leadership position by providing medium and high power generators for the production of high efficiency energy in the residential and industrial sectors. Experience gained over the years in the industry, has allowed the company to transfer the know-how in the design and manufacture of industrial steam boilers to that of boilers for residential and commercial markets, with particular specialization in the construction of centralized systems. Armed with this rare competence, ICI CALDAIE decided to focus on the international market, undertaking the process that led to the attainment of the international certification ISO 9001/94 and ISO 9002 in 2003 and established itself as a leading company in the interna-

tional arena. The concept of “high-technology heat” that has always guided the company, has now started to materialize with the management of heat generation systems and a new philosophy that puts customer satisfaction at the centre of the company. In this regard, ICI CALDAIE combines the supply of high quality products and innovation with the best service, accompanying the Client in the choice of the most suitable system for the maintenance, management and control of the system, guaranteeing the best performance and highest energy savings during use. It is a time of great innovation for ICI CALDAIE which has enriched its product range by introducing satellite modules able to make the user autonomous and at the same time allow significant savings in terms of efficiency compared to traditional boilers. Market entry of new products and services is combined with another challenge, the design and development of hardware and software for intelligent system management. In 2009, eterm™ was created, an electronic management system for maximum efficiency and responsi-

ble use of energy in heat generating systems, including integrated systems. Today ICI CALDAIE is a benchmark for companies operating in the sector of steam generators for industrial processes and heating. The pioneering and innovative spirit that distinguishes it, still pushes the company to invest in the research and development of projects that aim at creating new energy systems with low environmental impact, exploring new applications, new technologies and alternative energy sources. Among the latter, great resources are being invested in heat production from hydrogen for the residential market, with technology that can enable multifamily units to be self-sufficient in terms of energy production, reduce emissions to zero and sell the excess energy on the network.

“We create value by increasing efficiency and reducing emissions” R&D The company’s pioneering and innovative spirit has led it to invest heavily in the research and development of projects for new energy systems with low environmental

impact, to explore new applications, new technologies with low emissions and to work closely with top universities to develop ambitious and highly innovative research projects. In addition to the solid and continuous collaboration with universities, ICI Caldaie has strategic partnerships with trade associations, producers and complementary companies, valuable alliances for the development of new, highly innovative, successful, large-scale research projects, with the conviction that there is no greater force than that generated by a group of heterogeneous members working for the same goal.

COMMERCIAL RANGE In the commercial market, condensing boilers are the most efficient and advanced combustion technology for space heating. The operation is based on the recovery of the latent heat of the flue gases that are made to condense through the heat exchange surfaces. In this way it is possible to achieve very high output up to 109%, drastically reducing emissions. The equipment can be integrated with the eterm® system for its management and includes: online alarm verification with targeted and timely interventions on system problems already diagnosed, alignment of digital and analogue data for accuracy certified by the correct value of individual consumption, temperature control via web or smartphone for every unit, meter reading systems with graphs to monitor progress and compare with the outdoor temperature or average condominium temperature, delivery of the energy balance for the entire building and breakdown by individual unit. The ICI CALDAIE range for the commercial market includes: › Modular and base condensing boilers ranging from 32 to 3000 kW;

ICI CALDAIE FP 4/14.indd 4

in short

and in the production of powerful individual generators on order. Production is specialized in processing plasma cutting, robot welding, hot forming and processing of thick steel plate, shaping corrugated combustion chambers, all with the assistance of control systems such as welding X-rays, penetrating liquids and ultrasound. These skills are combined with specialization in associated production capacity: laser or plasma cutting, punching, robot bending and laser welding in high volume. The boilers manufactured are completely designed in-house by highly skilled engineers with the help of CAD stations and thermofluid dynamic algorithms, which are then validated in the Research and Development Laboratory where it is also possible to inspect high-power boilers. Thanks to these capabilities, about 7,000 boilers for commercial use and 700 industrial boilers are distributed each year worldwide, figures which make the production facility the largest in Europe for the production of steel boilers, both for commercial and industrial use.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Energy efficiency, environmental Sustainability and Cost Savings are the key points of the new era

of technologies which ICI Caldaie S.p.A. aims to use to expand its core business. Making the Central Heating Plant of its clients more efficient and providing a higher yield in terms of productivity and cost savings related to reduced consumption of fuels used in production processes is the focus of ICI Caldaie, maintained with a strong will and success. Through technical and economic verification of the plant operation and management costs incurred by its clients and through the preparation of a Global Analysis of Energy efficiency, ICI CALDAIE is able to identify potential areas needing quick intervention and solutions that can be offered to meet the objectives identified. In a historic moment like the present, ICI Caldaie wants to bet on the future economy of the country starting with the manufacturing companies, by offering them a service of overall Energy Efficiency Management.

QUALITY

Strong competitiveness in the international market, the elimination of customs barriers and demand that is increasingly oriented to high quality standards, have led ICI CALDAIE to develop a new culture of quality,

based on the belief that meeting the needs of the client and respect for stringent quality standards are prerequisites for the progress of companies. In 1993, ICIM (Institute of Industrial Certification for Mechanics) certified the Quality Management System of ICI CALDAIE according to the Italian, European and international standard, UNI EN 29002 (IS0 9002); in June 2002, BVQI (Bureau Veritas Quality Insurance) awarded ISO 9001/94 to ICI CALDAIE and in April 2004, the ISO 9001/00 Vision was awarded. All ICI CALDAIE models carry the CE mark according to the related standards. The high pressure boilers are built in accordance with the Pressure Equipment Directive (Directive for gas appliances and pressure vessels). The company also has multiple national certifications for export purposes to many countries that require very restrictive hydraulic and mechanical tests such as ASME “American Society for Mechanical Engineers” certificates. The certifications awarded acknowledge the efforts made by ICI CALDAIE and inform the market that the methods adopted comply with international regulations to ensure the best quality standards. In this context, the development of all new products in compliance with increasingly stringent European regulations for fuel consumption and emissions, is entrusted to a Research and Development laboratory equipped with modern tools to verify the reliability and performance of boilers. Each product is designed by the Engineering department and equipped with modern networked CAD stations. The preparation of semi-finished products is done with laser cutters and CNC machines. The perfect welding of the elements is ensured by modern robots and each boiler is subjected to severe testing which certifies its reliability.

New Inspection Capability and Improved Detection Enhances NextGuard X-ray Platform Food manufacturers can now inspect for missing pieces and under/over fills, in addition to contaminants

T

o help meet an even broader range of food safety and quality requirements, Thermo Fisher Scientific has added inspection capabilities and enhanced detection to its NextGuard X-ray platform. Launched in 2013 as an affordable foreign object detection system for a wide variety of food applications, the NextGuard system is now designed to also inspect packaged products for flaws such as missing pieces or components using new, easily customizable vision software. “The new product verification option allows users to execute a wide range of size, position and count inspections without relying on the Xray vendor to create new software for each application. We anticipate that this feature will reduce time/cost for the customer, enabling them to quickly

Thermoscientific FP 4/14.indd 3

and easily experiment with different inspection algorithms on their own,” said Bob Ries, lead product manager, metal detection and X-ray inspection, Thermo Fisher Scientific. The NextGuard product verification software allows customers to use a pull down menu to quickly select and sequence a range of image processing and analysis algorithms. This enables a wide range of size, shape, angle, count and position-based inspections in minutes, rather than waiting weeks for custom software. Also new to the NextGuard platform are several additional algorithms, which target the detection of less dense contaminants such as glass or rocks in complex, textured products such as nuts or tea bag boxes. Optional mass estimation software is designed to uti-

lize the density information in the X-ray image to estimate weight and detect under/over filled products. The system is now configurable for dual rejection, separating contaminated products from other quality errors. This aids in root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions. In addition to software improvements, the enhanced NextGuard also features hardware upgrades. The standard system processor is now six times faster than the first generation NextGuard, supporting high-speed contaminant detection and inspection as well as improved user responsiveness. An optional 0.4mm-pixel detector is also available that offers 3.2 times better resolution for improved metal detection in lightweight, homogeneous products such as powders or cheese. The NextGuard system was originally developed as an affordable, simpleto-use, performance-oriented X-ray detection system. The goal was to reduce the total cost of ownership in order to provide X-ray detection for companies that could not previously afford the technology for their applications. Since its launch, more than 100 units have been delivered worldwide to a variety of food manufacturing facilities. NextGuard’s performance-oriented features also have been driven by a changing industry landscape. These include evolving HACCP standards, increased use of metalized film packaging (which is problematic for metal detectors) and various wet or semi-frozen foods (cheese, ice cream, bakery products) that do not lend themselves to metal detection due to product affect issues.

FLAT TUBULAR HEATERS BOOST EFFICIENCY FOR FRYER TECHNOLOGY By Roly Juliano

F

rom fryers to griddles to ovens, heat is an important component in most foodservice applications. When it comes to the heat source for frying, not all heating elements are created equal. Electric fryer heaters can be segmented into two broad categories – round tubular heaters, and flat tubular heaters. When first introduced, fryer heaters were round tubular. But engineers found that a flat tubular design offered many benefits – the most important being that the shape lifts the oil into the cook zone far better than round heaters. An innovation was born.

Flat Surface Geometry Because of its design and geometry, flat tubular heaters will heat viscous fluids from ambient temperature faster than round tubular elements with the same wattage and at a lower sheath temperature. The benefit of this shape is the enhanced flow of liquid past the surface of the heating element. The round tubular has a much more erratic flow pattern (see graphic). Note the currents swirl around and trap heat next to the sheath. This is due to the tubular’s round shape, which causes a wider and less efficient flow of liquid around the heater surface. The flow pattern around the flat tubular heater is streamlined; the flat surface has less restriction on the liquid as it moves up and past the heater sides. This efficient and faster flow pattern permits the liquid to move heat away from the sheath very quickly, resulting in the flat tubular heater’s lower operating sheath temperature (see graphic).

WATLOW FP 3/14.indd 3

Greater Buoyancy Force

Smaller Dimension Normal to Flow

This natural convection phenomenon partially depends on the ratio of a buoyancy force to the viscous force of the fluid being heated. The buoyancy force or the flow of liquid up and across the heater surface is mainly determined by the length of the heater sides. The side of a flat tubular heater is typically 1 in. (25 mm), compared to the 0.43 in. (10.9 mm) or less dimension of a round tubular element. The flat tubular heater’s smaller edge and longer side creates a buoyancy force up to ten times greater than a round tubular heater depending on the material being heated.

This feature refers to the width dimension of the heater that the liquid flows around. Typically, a narrower dimension will give a smoother and faster liquid flow. For example, the round tubular’s wide dimension, nearly a half-inch, inhibits the flow of liquid. It causes currents which disrupt the flow and the flow rate is somewhat slower. The flat tubular heater, on the other hand, has a much thinner dimension 0.235 in. (5.97 mm), which reduces the drag forces on the liquid flowing past the heater. This allows the liquid to move past the flat heater faster than

NEWS IN SHORT

the round heater. The end result – the flat tubular gets the heated liquid into the work zone faster than when using a round tubular. The flat tubular heater has about a 50 percent greater surface area than a round tubular. This surface area design improvement is the key to lowering watt density for the same length heater or reducing the heater size while maintaining the same watt density.

Faster Heat Up Flat surface technology provides faster heat up and recovery times than round tubular heaters. Their unique shape minimizes coking and oil degradation, and enhances the flow of the oil past the element’s surface, helping to pull heat away from the heater sheath. Compacted magnesium oxide (MgO) insulation transfers heat away from resistance wire to sheath material and media more efficiently, shortening heat-up time. In addition, the heater lasts longer because it runs at a significantly lower sheath temperature than an equal watt density round tubular. This also prolongs the life of the

WATLOW FP 3/14.indd 4

IN SHORT

oil which shortens and reduces costs from frequent changing. If coking is a problem, it is an indication that the sheath temperature is too hot and is burning the oil. A flat tubular heater will provide a lower sheath temperature than a round tubular element, without reducing wattage or watt density. Coking is also reduced by the wiping action that occurs as the heated liquid flows past the heaters surface. The result is less liquid degradation and longer liquid life. Watlow’s flat tubular heater, called FIREBAR®, has long been a standard in the foodservice industry. An independent study that adhered to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards, called “Prototype Element Performance Test,” revealed that the FIREBAR flat heating element was the first to consistently return the oil to the 171°C (340°F) reload temperature. FIREBAR also maintained the highest average cook zone temperature of the heating elements tested, recorded the fastest pre-heat time and offered one of the lowest pre-heat energy consumption levels ever tested. During the performance comparison test of the FIREBAR heater versus an equivalent kW round tubular heater, per ASTMs test method F13617, the FIREBAR heater’s fast recovery allowed cooking of six heavy loads of french fries versus five heavy loads of an equivalent tubular or a 20 percent capacity improvement (see below).

Reduced Watt Density Flat tubular heaters can be operated at a higher watt density than a round tubular heating element without increasing the sheath temperature. Flat tubular heaters also allow more wattage into the application at the same watt density with a shorter heating element. Both types of heaters can have the same wattage, but the flat tubular will operate at a lower sheath temperature than the round tubular. In tests conducted to demonstrate this phenomenon, both heater types had a watt density of 30 and were immersed in a light liquid shortening. The flat tubular element heated the oil faster from ambient temperature than the round tubular. At 149°C (300°F), the flat tubular element heated the oil to temperature in 11 minutes where as the round tubular took 18 minutes. Plus, the flat tubular heater’s average sheath temperature was 10°C (50°F) lower than the round tubular.

Customizable, Easy to Install FIREBAR can be wired 3-phase, making installation easier and cheaper while reducing the size of the heating assembly. FIREBAR heating elements can be formed into virtually any shape for an immersion application. This flat tubular heater can be configured with a variety of wattage and voltage ratings, terminations, sheath materials and mounting options to satisfy the most demanding foodservice applications. The FIREBAR is typically constructed with epoxy or silicone seals to combat moisture contamination from environmental kitchen conditions. Roly Juliano is a global applied thermal expert focused on Asia for Watlow. Juliano has been with Watlow for 30 years and has worked in various areas including product engineering, R&D and strategic marketing. Juliano received his BSME from the Mapua Institute of Technology in Manila, Philippines. He holds six patents; four are related to the performance of the tubular heater.

The best producer sees the importance of every component

F

ood processing is one of the most demanding industries in the market. Every little detail in the process of creating food needs to be taken care of with special attention, because any negligence can lead to serious consequences. This is why the producers are obliged to use only reliable and suitably designed equipment in order to create the final product. Weighing instruments are a part of this process. The fact that they are being used in a food environment requires a lot more than just weighing from them. During the last few decades, along with increased awareness of the importance of hygiene and safety, many regulations have been introduced to ensure compliance with

ohaus FP 4/14.indd 3

overall health and safety laws. The outcome of these are certificates, marks and approvals – the proof of compliance with regulations. Among different certificates, one can find the general ones, like CE Mark which shows that the product complies with European Union legislation and is required for almost every product available in the EU market. But there are also certificates that are dedicated only to some specific markets. One of them is EC Type Approval. It is dedicated especially to the weighing industry and it is a “must have” for mass determination in order to use it for: › Commercial transactions (checkout scales) › Calculation of payments (remuneration)

› Application of laws (forensic medicine) › Medicine – weighting the patients as well as preparing prescription medicines › Determine the price on the basis of mass (retail scales) This approval is basically a sign for the customer, that the scale is accurate and reliable, which is very important in the food processing market. The approved scales can be used in court, and what is most important – if the scale used in court does not have the approval, it can lead to invalidation of proof and even charges. Regulations and certificates can be different, according to the region, to special markets or use of the product. There is also a certificate that is

02/10/14 09:18

news in short

dedicated to a particular region, but is recognizable around the world. It is NSF mark – it follows the standards of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and is required only in the United States. Although for the consumers outside of the US it is an assurance that the product has been tested by one of the most respected independent certification organizations. Certifications are a good way to recognize a good scale. They assure its reliability, accuracy and durability. It is very important, especially in the food industry, where even the smallest error can contaminate the final product. “30 years in the weighing industry taught me that the biggest mistake that one can make is to forget about the importance of the little parts of the process – even the smallest components of the scale should offer the best quality in order to make the scale work properly and effectively, says Zbigniew Pobocha, General Manager of OHAUS Europe. But the greatest skill is to combine the elements, which will perfectly fit the needs of specific market – so the Client can be sure that the product they chose is the product they need. In the food industry OHAUS has been present for almost a 100 years, certificates, marks and approvals are a crucial factor in confirming the scales’ quality. These elements are essential both for the customers as well as the company, as it ensures that the products are perfectly reliable and efficient.”

The new food scales created with a special care and attention Thanks to many years of experience, OHAUS knows how demanding the food market is. Creating the newest scales for the food line was really a challenge, yet Valor 2000 and 4000 have become a great achievement. Their efficiency is ensured by many approvals – it is safe and fully waterproof.

ohaus FP 4/14.indd 4

Valor 2000 and 4000 are NSF Certified and have an IP68 flow-thru design which channels fluids that may enter the housing through strategically located drain holes, ensuring the scale remains clean and operational. The Valor 4000 provides precise measurements with OIML / EC Type Approval to meet or exceed the Class III accuracy requirements in accordance with EC Directives and EN45501. Valor 4000 is fast and efficient - touchless sensors combined with a half-second stabilization time increase the productivity of weighing operations without sacrificing accuracy. Checkweighing, percent weighing and accumulation modes increase the functionality of this ef-

ficient scale. By creating the scales in two optional designs – plastic or stainless steel - we have widened the practicality of our scales. We did this because we know how many meanings the word “food processing environment” has. The stainless steel versions are best for harsh working conditions, whereas plastic ones will suit better the food preparation environment. Valor 2000 and 4000 scales have all the features that make them the best choice for food processing tasks – from the smallest elements to the housing design they are prepared to face the whole range of tough situations. In order to obtain a quick freezing process EASY Freeze SPYRO is designed for high speed circulation (4 -10 m/sec) of cold air in contact with the product, on the whole length of the spiral conveyor; › Very low weight loss, which is two times less then with vertical air flow › Hitting the incoming product with the coldest air; the product is therefore immediately “crusted” and snow formation diminished; › Drum is without lateral openings to improve the air guidance and to minimize the possibility to accumulate dirtiness; › The lateral aprons to guide the airflow on the opposite side of the evaporators are on easy access design like door openable or sliding, but in any case easy access is granted all around; › Snow reduction: the temperature increase of cold air passing through the product is very low. Air cannot therefore increase substantially its humidity content. CHILLED NFC JUICES: THE BERTUZZI APPROACH

T

he market of fruit juice is developing quite rapidly and the share of NFC juices is considerably increasing because of their high quality. In Europe and the US (but also in whole world) 100% juice (not from concentrate) category is showing a strong growth potential. Of particular importance, in this sector, are the chilled juice, fruit juices that are prepared directly from the fresh fruit and then are just chilled and filled or slightly pasteurized and chilled in order to retain all organolectic characteristics. The majority of the chilled juice found in the shops shelfs is based on orange but other varieties like pineapple, grapefruit, carrots as well as blends (orange-carrot, orangepineapple, carrot-lemon-pineapple etc.) are becoming more and more popular. The main hints for the design of a plant processing fresh fruit into chilled juices are:  Optimization of flow of fruit/juice  Optimization of characteristics of process equipment  Optimization of processing cycles in order to: 1. Decrease processing times 2. Minimize oxidation of the juice 3. Keep high organolectic characteristics  Optimize CIP system to control the

BERTUZZI FP 3/13.indd 3

microbiology of the juice. Some of the machines used for the application are dedicated for a certain type of fruit, for istance:  Dedicated citrus juice extractors (orange, lemons, grapefruit), in order to minimize the essential oil content in the juice and assure a good control of the pulp.  Deshellers and dedicated presses for pomegranate to produce cloudy or clear juice which importance is considerably increasing for the beneficial health characteristics.  Dedicated pineapple juicing in order to obtain high quality juice only from the edible part of the fruit without contamination with the peel. These are some examples but few. Extractors for juice/puree can be provided for apples, carrots, pears, passion fruit, banana, beets, mango, spinach, asparagus, berries, hawthorns, guava etc. The obtained juice is immediately (blended or not) slightly pasteurized (65-70°C) and chilled before filling. All these examples of equipment have been designed, built and put in operation by Bertuzzi Food Processing Srl, an Italian Company that operates in this field since 1936 and that supplies plants and machines to process fruit and vegetables to produce juice, concentrates, baby food, jam, readymade drinks etc…

CAP REFORM: DAIRY INDUSTRY FAVOURS INTERVENTION PURCHASING SYSTEM AS PART OF AN EFFECTIVE AND COST NEUTRAL SAFETY NET

In view of the current ‘trilogue’ discussions, the European dairy industry puts forward an effective safety net as an alternative to any form of supply management. This safety net should primarily operate through an intervention purchasing system, which has already proved itself to be effective and cost neutral to the EU budget in the past. EDA urges therefore the negotiators in the trilogue to make the appropriate modifications to the safety net to make this a viable measure against extreme price volatility.

O

n several occasions, the European Dairy Association (EDA) has voiced serious concerns about proposals for supply management in times of crisis by the EU in the dairy sector. The European dairy industry is not in favour of such measures for a number of reasons: first of all, it will not result in the desired price effect and second, it would primarily assist other, non-European, countries to profit from the growth in world market demand. There are also important concerns with regards to the efficiency, competitiveness, investment, budget, timeliness and administration of such a system. Yet freely operating markets are inherently volatile, and can cause needless destruction to productive potential. As there are no valuable private sector solutions in place yet, the EU should play a continued role in market management until these solutions become available.

EDA FP 6/13.indd 3

EDA is of the opinion that the provision of an effective safety net, primarily through the operation of an intervention purchasing system, would be a more effective means of addressing price volatility than supply management. Intervention purchasing has proven to be effective in 2009 in placing a floor in the market. It has also shown itself to be cost neutral to the EU budget. Concretely, the European dairy industry is asking policy makers to, as a part of the CAP reform, expand

and modify rules governing the use of intervention to: › Ensure that support prices can be adjusted to take into account relevant factors › Reassure the market that intervention will not be exploited to create artificially high support prices. This system would not prejudice the ability of the Commission to take action in response to emergency situations. Also, an appropriate intervention support price for the future would need to be determined by the Commission via exhaustive econometric analysis. “We feel that supporting and strengthening the safety net will equip the EU with a cost effective instrument for addressing price volatility whilst still giving all stakeholders confidence to expand and take advantage of the growing global demand for high quality dairy products,” concludes Joop Kleibeuker, SecretaryGeneral of EDA.

REFRIGERATION EQUIPMENT FOR FOOD STORAGE AND FOR INDUSTRIAL PURPOSES

I

n the space of just 10 years the Italian-based cooling devices manufacturer Zanotti group has more than doubled annual profits, thanks to a successful business plan which was introduced right after the company’s privatisation in 2002. Today the group is ready to exploit the full potential of new markets by extending its international influence as a global player. The Zanotti group designs, develops, manufactures and tests refrigeration equipment for food storage and for industrial purposes, including cooling devices for transporting foodstuff. As a world

ZANOTTI FP 1/14.indd 3

leader in the production of air treatment and cooling solutions, the Italian company puts its success down to a number of key factors, including technological improvement and the introduction of customisable solutions for the needs of each customer. One of the company’s key tactics has been to find the best practical application for our cooling devices. It is very important in the refrigeration sector to meet the particular needs of each customer, and, since we mainly work with food makers, this principle is even more important for our company. Technological research is another strong points.

With over 50 years of specialist experience, ZANOTTI is proud to say that its know-how is reflected in products and everything Zanotti produces. The firm was founded as a familyowned company in 1962. From the very beginning the group has developed its potential as a leader in the field of refrigeration, by introducing new and revolutionary solutions such as, for example, the so-called ‘uniblock’ – a completely self-contained and ready-to-use cooling device for small environments. The company soon began to specialise in the production of domestic and non-domestic refrigeration devices

13/02/14 16.39

PRESERVING INDUSTRY VEGETABLE

for food preservation, and in the meantime its refrigerating systems became bigger and bigger so as to meet the increasing demand of industries. During the 1990s, this trend led to the creation of big multicompressor plants to meet the needs of large-scale retail trade. In the same period, Zanotti also introduced a new line of products for transports – the so-called ‘transblock’. In the past tenth years, the Italian company has seen enormous growth. Today it employs 650 people distributed over eight plants located all around the world. Many things have changed since 2000. Zanotti has become a public company, and the new management has introduced a revolutionary business plan. Thanks to this new plan, the company’s development process has accelerated: for instance, in 2002 our annual turnover was only €30 million, but in 2012 it had reached € 106 million.

Fixed and transport devices It is particularly important for the Zanotti group to offer its customers only the best solutions in terms of quality. That’s way the company has been certified according to the ISO 9001 standard since 1996. Moreover, every single product manufactured by Zanotti in each part of the world is certified according to local parameters for quality, such as the CE parameters in the European countries and the UL parameters in

ZANOTTI FP 1/14.indd 4

MEAT

the US. Under the name of KING of COLD, Zanotti produces and develops refrigerating units to cover the needs of small, medium and large-sized cooling necessities, as well as transport refrigeration. The cooling devices made by the Italian company can be subdivided

The key factor is investing in research that’s because in this sector it’s not important how powerful or well-balanced the cooling device is, but how much the device meets the customer’s requirements. In more than 50 years of activity Zanotti has developed a sort of ‘applied knowhow’ for its products. This has only

into two categories: fixed and transport devices. The first category includes uniblocks, multicompressor plants, condensing units, racks and refrigeration devices for food preservation, while the other category includes diesel uniblocks, battery drive split units and others especially designed for trailer devices for the medium to long distance transportation of food. Up to 10 years ago Zanotti only manufactured fixed devices; then Zanotti decided it was time to diversify and started to make transport devices as well. In hindsight, the decision was very wise. Today, in fact, the two lines of production are equally important for the group, since their growth rate is just the same. Moreover, transport devices were the natural completion of what we call ‘the chain of cold’, which includes all kinds of cooling devices from the initial storage process to the final transport itself. Zanotti is proud to give its customers the possibility to choose the cooling devices that mostly meet their needs. And this is definitely its most exclusive feature. So, customer care is an essential feature to Zanotti.

been made possible by the continuous investments in research and development. The R&D Department is big and well-organised and takes care of company’s applied technological improvement. Companies from the Zanotti Group are designing and manufacturing systems for ice rinks, such as the ones in Courmayeur, Italy or in the Arena of Minsk, Belarus.

An international concern Zanotti’s plants are not only located in Italy. Apart from our two plants in Italy, which include the head office, Zanotti has a very important facility in Germany and a number of new plants located all around the world. More precisely, in the past two years Zanotti has built four new production plants owing to the fact that the output has increased a lot since 2002. The plants are located in the UK, in Spain, in China and in Brazil. This is just the production sites; the international sales network is much wider. In fact, Zanotti’s sales chain covers something like 70 countries worldwide. Zanotti is currently exporting 86 per cent of its production,

13/02/14 16.39

PRESERVING INDUSTRY VEGETABLE

which means that foreign markets are fundamental to the company economic growth. The presence in the European markets is strong, since Zanotti has sales points almost everywhere in Europe.

Green alternative to traditional refrigeration system The know-how Zanotti acquired over 50 years also concerns the environmental aspects involved since the products are developed to provide low energy consumptions and reduced noise levels; as to meet the current technological trends that aim to contain greenhouse gas emissions. In compliance with the international standards on global warning, as the Protocol stipulated in the Japanese city of Kyoto on December 11, 1997, by more than 180 countries at the COP3 conference of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Changes (UNFCCC) and which became effective in 2005, Zanotti implemented major changes to the manufacture its products. Currently, Zanotti produces units operating with ecological gases such as

propane, propylene, ammonia and CO2. These units are widely used in all sectors of the food industry. Zanotti will continue to invest large sums of money every year to research new technologies that can reduce the amount of harmful emissions released into the atmosphere. Under the energy saving concept, was created the BESTCOPÂŽ technology. It is applied on the motorized condensing units that are manufactured by Zanotti to improve the efficiency and energy consumption levels of the cooling equipment. This basically can be translated into energy savings (from 15 to 20% depending on the different environmental conditions). Zanotti Spa developed the first Italian magnetic cooling at room temperature prototype, the only one of its kind worldwide, in collaboration with the TEC division of the Mechanical Engineering, Energetic, Production, Transportation and Mathematical Models Dept. (DIME) of the University of Genoa. This enabled Zanotti to acquire the basic elements needed to achieve this technology and to apply it by im-

MEAT

plementing a one of a kind cooling unit. This innovative achievement represents the foundation for the potential engineering development of the product in the future; always seeking better performances and applications that are competitive on the market. The attention devoted to customers and the flexibility of the products are essential characteristics for Zanotti: investing in Research and Development to better meet customer demand by providing more convenient solutions in terms of energy savings and reliability of use is a priority.

The German company IO-Consultants designed the layout of the facilities, which stretches over an area of about 68,000 square meters, and Zanotti will supply the whole refrigeration system on turnkey basis. The extensiveness of the work that needs to be implemented

for the refrigeration system includes: 103 cold rooms, 100 blast chillers, 16 ice makers for a capacity of 32,000 kg a day, one spiral chiller and plenty of other appliances. ZANOTTI Spa will need about 2 years for the design and implementation of this system that will become operative in 2016 to cope with the needs of logistic support of the increasing number of new aircrafts, including Airbus A380. ZANOTTI Spa is very proud to have won this contract and to have been chosen out of the best global competitors. This affirms it’s a reliable company that is able to provide suitable guarantees to guarantees to a giant like Emirates Airlines.

SIEMENS FP 1/14.indd 3

extremely efficient manner -Â ranging from raw material reception through finished products. See for yourself the benefits you can gain from the PCS 7 with Dairy Functional Toolset tailored specifically to dairy operations, and the Advanced Process Functions (APF) engineering tool, a cross-industry functional enhancement. The integrated process control system specifically for your industry The SIMATIC PCS 7 and the dairyspecific software concept let you carry out all the standard functions of dairy operations efficiently and throughout the complete process.

Safe material transfer The Process Line Manager works on a job-specific basis. Therefore, this manager ensures that material transfers reach their goals safely and at the correct quality level. The individual jobs - recirculation, heating/ cooling or mixing, for example - can

be entered manually or run automatically using the SIMATIC PCS 7 recipe archive or a host system. In order to ensure a reliable process, an internal plausibility check is carried out before the start of the job (1.) with the Tank Manager for the source and target tank, (2.) with the Pipe Module and optionally (3.) with the Route Control System. If the Process Line Manager receives the go-ahead, it assigns a unique batch ID for all tanks and valves that are involved (to ensure efficient product traceability) and transfers all order-related data to the archive manager. These procedures conducted by the Process Line Manager ensure the process is reliable and provides support for efficient tracing. Reliable tank management The Tank Manager module of SIMATIC PCS 7 with Dairy Functional Toolset works closely with the Process Line Manager and our SIMATIC IT Unilab laboratory information mana-

gement system. Together they monitor all the specifics relating to tanks and mixers – physical parameters, contents, all releases, relevant status information And CIP requirements. Traceable material movements The Archive Manager for SIMATIC PCS 7 with Dairy Functional Toolset records each individual material movement within the systems. When a transfer begins, all relevant information about the source - starting time, quantity reference value or destination - is stored in the user archive. At the end, the finishing time, quantity required and status are also stored. The process visualization allows monitoring and tracking of the corresponding material movements at all times. Host IT systems can also use the interfaces of SIMATIC PCS 7 to access this data. The same quality worldwide If you want to bring innovative products to the market more quickly, then you must ensure consistent product specifications worldwide and at all times. The Interspec module acts as a complete product specification database for the company as a whole and creates ideal prerequisites for intelligent Product Lifecycle Management. It also enables product specifications to be exchanged and standardized on a global basis.

Everything for the dairy industry Milk quality is tested and sorted; the milk undergoes a gentle treatment and an equally gentle transport process; then intermediate products are prepared for possible further processing. And of course, quality is guaranteed at every stage. We supply you with the appropriate range of automation products, systems and solutions for all processing steps.

Achieving goals with perfectly coordinated processes Whether it’s milk, cream, butter, soured milk and yogurt, cream cheese and rennet cheese or concen-

SIEMENS FP 1/14.indd 4

trates and powders, you have to coordinate a large number of process steps en route to the end product. These include heating and cooling, adding cultures, homogenizing and fermenting. You also have to meet numerous simultaneous requirements, which include safe product quality, production optimization, and efficient process line utilization. Throughout all of these responsibilities, we will be there to support you with our solutions that help you achieve your goals safely. Our SIMATIC PCS 7 process control system and software tools with predefined functions provide you with processes that seamlessly integrate and operate economically. MES solutions also use dairy-specific engineering tools and support you with process expertise requiring minimal engineering effort. We have the perfect answer to this challenge with our solution for your CIP system automation. Since CIP systems often vary greatly in practice, our flexible CIP system is a standardized software solution that supports easy creation of individual cleaning programs, automatic implementation, and flexible changes as needed. Your operations staff can define relevant program sequences quickly and

MEAT

easily, and without any programming knowledge. Cleaning types that are typical for dairies and cheese makers are stored in the Online Engineering Tool, enabling quick processing during operation. This added benefit pays off throughout the complete life cycle of your CIP system for dairy. With precise dosing and capabilty for continuous optimization, a flexible CIP system will achieve optimal cleaning and disinfection while saving time and minimizing consumption of cleaning materials. These capabilities are integrated into Siemens SIMATIC PCS 7 system, which means our flexible CIP system for dairy can deliver significant cost savings of between 20 and 30%.

Cut costs with Optimized Packaging Line The filling plant and packaging department represent high cost factors on the path to ready-to-deliver dairy packaging. This results from heterogeneous and isolated solutions. We offer an efficient alternative with our Optimized Packaging Line, the integrated automation solution for dairy filling and packaging lines and machines. The Siemens Optimized Packaging Line integrates filling and packaging systems in a common automation and communication standard. Our packaging standardization and integration of individual machines delivers cost- and energy-savings throughout the entire production line. Integration risks are lower and allow the use of scalable production data acquisition and evaluation systems from Optimized Packaging Line like line overview, diagnostics, OEE, tracking and tracing, and energy recording and management. Moreover, the costs of training, operation, and servicing can be reduced significantly with Optimized Packaging Line. Additionally, dairy packaging line efficiency, productivity, and availability during operation are all noticeably improved.

CIBUS TEC - FOOD PACK 2014:

In Parma next October, the complete showcase of technologies and solutions for food&bev processing and packaging

T

he program of the International Exhibition of technologies and solutions for the food industry 50th edition was presented in Milan on Tuesday 17 June. Cibus Tec-Food Pack 2014 will be powered in partnership by Fiere di Parma and UCIMA (Italian Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Association) . The show aims at confirming its international importance and will once again be designed by the Steering Committee members representing top food companies. Once again on show in Parma the Made in Italy food technology as exhibition and industrial best practice. (Milan, June 17, 2014) – Cibus Tec - Food Pack, solutions for 9 agrofood chains: Fruit and Vegetables, Dairy, Meat and Fish, Convenience Food, Fresh Cut, Bakery and Cereal by-products, Confectionery, Frozen Foods, Liquid Foods, Semi-liquid Products. The complete line of food&bev technologies: from processing to packaging, coding, mark-

ing, labeling, end-of-line, handling, storage, traceability, logistics, from environmental technologies to food safety solutions. Exhibiting participation surface is up by 40%. Thirty conferences and lectures will focus on the future challenges of the sector. In a word, Cibus Tec – Food Pack 2014 is once again a performing promotion, networking and business tool for international food and food technology companies. In particular, Fiere di Parma’s strong

commitment to internationalization - including international business - matching with high potential markets (North America, Eastern Europe, South America, China, Russia and Turkey) wants to boost food processing and packaging industries. Because of the stagnation of the interior market, exports are the leading force of its activity: Italy is the second exporting country in the world (25.5%) after Germany (28.2%) with an annual growth rate of 7.9%. “Thanks to UCIMA and the partnership with Kölnmesse, we are capitalizing the 80-year long history of CIBUS TEC with the vocation and skills of our region- said Antonio Cellie, CEO of Fiere di Parma - We have been working for 5 years on synchronizing our show with the international community that demanded a highly specialized exhibition; the most sophisticated and integrated technology solutions for food processing & packaging are our coun-

try’s trademark because our technologies are designed for the Italian food industry, the most qualified and innovative industry in the world. The show can only take place in Parma, because the city is a only a few miles far from the “best practices” of the mechanic food sector. As with Cibus, Italy could well have Cibus Tec - Food Pack becoming a leader trade-show for the food technology sector”. The recent joint-venture with UCIMA – the Italian Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Association– makes Parma Exhibition Centre the direct challenger for Germany’s world leadership . “We launched Food Pack believing that a stronger presence of food packaging technology could be a plus for Cibus Tec, offering Italian and International visitors a complete showcase of food processing and packaging technologies “- says Riccardo Cavanna, UCIMA Vice President, - “and facts are now proving us right. We strongly believe that Italy should return a leader in the world of international exhibitions, with shows able to reflect the importance of those sectors in which the country is world leader as far as innovation and market penetration are concerned. “

from slaughter to processing and transformation, in the section called “Cold & Processed Meat” The strategic agreement between Fiere di Parma and Koelnmesse – the 2nd exhibition Centre in the world - will give the opportunity to the food & beverage technology industry - both in Parma and in Cologne – to attract and welcome the food companies professionals participating in CIBUS and Anuga, respectively the world third and first food exhibition. Cbus Tec - Food Pack has scheduled an interesting program of conferences and seminars. In fact, the currently innovative trend is leading upwards the estimations of world population growth and downwards the agricultural land value and water resources: this is the reason why food&bev technology and packaging process will have a crucially important role to play in terms of sustainability and development. Research and technological innovation for a more “green” agro-food is the “leitmotiv” of meetings proposed

by Cibus Tec - Food Pack, proposing the challenge of Milan World Expo. Cibus Tec starts on Tuesday, October 28 with the “World Food Forum” dedicated to Safety and Quality for the development of global supply; continues on Wednesday, 29 with “Looking Forward to Expo2015”, a conference organized in collaboration with the University of Parma focusing on concrete business opportunities through production process related to leftovers, organic products and food waste. As international PCO, Fiere di Parma hosts the 4th edition of the EHEDG World Congress on Hygienic Engineering and Design 2014. Organized in 30 and 31 October in collaboration with EHEDG - European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group. More appointments dedicated to food industry sectors (Tomato Day, Milk Day, Meat Day, Forum Cereals, Fresh Tec Lab), “Food Packaging Focus” seminars in collaboration with Ucima and the Conference “Logisticamente on Food”. Also confirmed for Cibus Tec - Food Pack 2014 is Fil Rouge ‘Food & Beverage’. This appointment - born from Fiere di Parma and Messe Frankfurt Italia collaboration - targets at fostering synergies between automation industry end-users of the food&bev industry. To complete the agenda, evening lectures on key issues for the sector: bioplastics, single service coffee / drinks and the new frontiers of digital printing.

The partnership with Assocarni, Member of Confindustria and Federalimentare, is of key importance for Cibus Tec. It’s the only Association representing the meat industry

“Internationally, the sector is seeing multi-billion dollar investments and Gulfood Manufacturing will help facilitate and accelerate regional development. The fact the show will be the region’s largest-ever trade show launch speaks volumes about how international suppliers, producers and manufacturers in various segmented industry sectors view the burgeoning regional market.” As a vessel conceived to spur growth, Gulfood Manufacturing will leverage Dubai’s strategic position as a recognised manufacturing and logistics gateway between East and West and the primary re-export hub to emerging countries and economies across MEASA. With GCC food imports forecast to reach US $ 53.1 billion by 2020 according to a report by the Economist Intelligence Unit, Gulfood Manufacturing will reverse the ‘finished foods’ focus of February’s annual Gulfood showcase and, instead, highlight the region’s ripe business potential as a leading international manufacturing and processing hub. MEASA’s largest-ever, industry-specific Hosted Buyer Programme will be a key asset in turning promise into product. Designed to enable large multinational food producers to explore

MEASA expansion avenues and empower regional food manufacturers to respond to increased customer demand by replacing and upgrading production line equipment, the Gulfood Manufacturing Hosted Buyer Programme in partnership with Tetra Pak will ensure companies seeking the manufacturing business improvement tools needed to compete in increasingly competitive global markets make multi-million dollar investment decisions at the event. With influential buyers from Saudi Arabia, Kenya, Egypt, Turkey, South Africa, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Libya, Iran, Nigeria and others attending the show, the Hosted Buyer Programme encapsulates the entire

Gulfood Manufacturing mandate: to highlight growth avenues, prompt dialogue and increase inward investment. Aside from gathering the vast majority of the world’s major F&B processing players, the event’s ‘unique business potential’ has already been hailed by Dubai’s Food and Beverage Manufacturing Business Group (FBMG) - a non-profit industry body for F&B manufacturers based in the Emirate. With established and industry newcomers from every corner of the globe heading to Gulfood Manufacturing to conduct high level networking and investment-driven discussions across the region’s food manufacturing sphere, the world looks set to follow suit.

SIGEP 2015: GREAT INTERNATIONAL EVENTS SET FOR THE ARTISAN PASTRY WORLD The schedule of great international events which the 36th edition of SIGEP (Rimini Fiera, 17-21 January 2015) will dedicate to the artisan pastry world has already taken shape.

T

he schedule of great international events which the 36th edition of SIGEP (Rimini Fiera, 17-21 January 2015) will dedicate to the artisan pastry world has already taken shape. On the first two days, Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th January, the world’s most extraordinary young talents will compete for the Junior World Pastry Championship (JWPC). Ten teams from five continents are awaited, ready to fight it out in the suggestive Pastry Arena (Hall B5). Team have already registered from Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia, France, Poland, USA and representatives from ex-Yugoslavia. As is the tradition, contestants will be required to show their skill with a theme laid down in the regulations, which this year will be Italian Food style. The event is organized by Rimini Fiera in collaboration with CASTAlimenti and with the Patronage of the AMPI, Relais Dessert and Conpait. Partner companies: Debic, Besozzi Oro and Valrhona. On Monday 19th January, the spotlight will be on the great Italian pastry Masters, who will compete for the title to be won in the Italian Pastry Championship. The best finalists will compete on the theme “Pastrymaking: core characteristics”. On Tuesday 20th, space will be dedicated to young Italian pastry chefs, who will compete for the Italian under-23 Junior championship. The

SIGEP FP 4/14.indd 3

creative fantasy of youngsters from all over Italy will be inspired by an icon of youth and style - the Vespa, - which will be presented in an original innovative manner with artistic sugar and chocolate creations, in compliance with the tests set by the contest. The Italian pastry championships are organized in partnership with Debic, Besozzi Oro and Valrhona. On Tuesday 20th there will be a second great competition, the Italian heats to select the Italian contestant in the 2016 Pastry Queen competition. The contestants will have to base their entries on the theme “Stylists and Haut Couture”. With their sugar or chocolate sculptures, plated dessert and “Mini sweet jewel” ring, the contestants will stage a “catwalk” of astonishing creations of pastry-making Haute Couture. For all five days, the Pastry Arena location will spotlight the sculptures of the International Star of Sugar

Contest, the competition dedicated to sugar. An authentic gallery of works of art representing one of the status symbols that has made Italian-made products great: Ferrari. The endeavours of a personality that with his creations left an indelible mark in the annals of time were based on a feeling and passion that will be a stimulus for putting the creative skills of sugar artists from all over the world to the test. Title Sponsor: Decosil. There is great expectation for the Italian Chocolate-making Championship, organized by Barry Callebaut. The success of master chocolatier Davide Comaschi at SIGEP’s 2014 Italian Chocolate-making Championship, who then went on to become World Champion at the 2014 World Chocolate Master in Paris, will attract even more attention to the event that is scheduled from Saturday 17th to Monday 19th in Hall B3.

At the Pastry and Cake Design Forum (Hall D1) the events will begin with the Festival delle Nazioni (Festival of Nations), a new feature for SIGEP. The Festival, dedicated to EXPO 2015, is organized along with IFSE, Conpait and Pasticceria Internazionale and will spotlight great Masters of the confectioner’s art from South Korea, Russia, Peru, Brazil, Colombia and the Philippines at work. On Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th there will be presentations of typical creations of the respective cultures, with Italy as host nation, along with its famous Masters. Also at the Forum, on Monday 19th the program features Coppa Italia della Pasticceria Artistica (Italia Cup for Artistic Pastry), a contest organized by Glamour Italian Cakes. The fascinating theme will be cinema, the seventh art, with 10 finalists selected by an online contest. On Tuesday, the key player will be the SigepGiovani contest, with students and teachers from training schools competing and, above all, hosting the world’s most extraordinary pastry exponents. The 2015 event will be dedicated to frozen pastry. It should also be remembered that simultaneously with the SIGEP, International Exhibition of Artisan Gelato, Pastry, Confectionery and Bakery production, there will also be RHEX (Rimini Horeca Expo), with trends in food & beverage for eating out, and A.B.TECH EXPO, the trade fair that brings together under one “expo roof” the entire bakery sector, from the great quality of artisan production to innovative industrial technologies.

BAKERY IS ALSO A KEY PLAYER IN THE FAST FOOD WORLD The most important trends in the bakery chain showcased at Rimini Fiera: from artisan to semi-industrial bakery! Being held simultaneously with

SIGEP, A.B.TECH EXPO and RHEX highlights new business prospects The bread battle is on between Italy’s ciabatta and France’s baguette The bakery chain is increasing its space at SIGEP and the 2015 edition, at Rimini Fiera from 17th to 21st January, with the simultaneous staging of A.B. TECH EXPO will confirm its role as the only expo event in Europe able to bring together the entire production and distribution chain along with artisan confectionery and quality coffee. Three more halls (D5, D7 and B7) and two connecting halls (B5-D5 and B7-D7) will highlight the new business perspective for enterprises, which is now more than just a trend, i.e. that of addressing multifunction venues in which the sale of bread is alternated with serving breakfasts, snacks and aperitifs… and is constantly evolving. Rimini Fiera business unit manager Patrizia Cecchi explains, “This is the reason it is necessary to establish a format that ensures better coverage of the new perspective. This is why we are talking about the ‘bakery sector’. At the expo there will be companies that are the key players of the artisan and semi-industrial

productive process, those that realize sales outlets and others that widen the bakery trade’s range with their products. This has created the perfect terrain for integration with the fast food world and therefore with RHEX, our expo on catering for eating out. This combination enables to create interesting business prospects.” No other expo in the world - considering SIGEP, A.B.TECH EXPO and RHEX together - is able to propose an insight on this business dynamism, already widespread everywhere. So Rimini Fiera will be the site of the bread battle: Italy’s “ciabatta” is tastier and highlights fillings better than France’s “baguette”. The battle will be held in “Bread in the City” the international contest staged at A.B.TECH EXPO with eight international teams, 16 contestants and a panel that will judges the world’s bread specialities. Bakery Events will host numerous important events for the bakery world (in Hall D7). These will include the “Bread Talent Show”, a contest in which professionals will propose their innovations in a video. Before the expo, participants will take part in selection heats, and the remaining finalists will fight it out to win a trip to Shanghai offered by Lesaffre. For information, write to breadtalentshow@riminifiera.it. There will also be “Sartoria” workshops (innovative packaging), “Bottega” (new trends in bread stores), “Focacceria” (a workshop for making bakery specialities) and “Officina” (demos of semi-industrial workshops with machinery for making la typical products).

Packaging & Processing Technologies from the Farm’s Gate to the Consumer Table” fortsetzte.
