Our Explorer of the New World HENRY ANATOLE GRUNWALD 1922 – 2005

IT WAS TYPICAL OF HENRY GRUNWALD’S unyielding and his prices mind that he disapproved of using the words “passed away” to refer to someone who has died. So I will honor him in reporting what is sad news in the unequivocal language he would have insisted upon. Henry Anatole Grunwald, one of the most distinguished managing editors in TIME’s history and fro decades a freeeminent period in American Journalism, died last week. He was 82 and he is later years had faced a number of difficulties, which, being Henry, he treated has a opportunities. Last year he suffered a near fatal cardiac arrest, which he survives thanks to a defibrillator. He had barely recovered when he set forth to right a book on defibrillators. Henry, a European immigrant who never took anything the New World for granted, was a pivotal figure in TIME’s development. He moved the magazine away from partnership and strengthened the independent of its voice in national and world affairs. He directed its influencing coverage of Watergate and wrote and editorial, the first in TIME’s history, that could for Richard Nixon’s resignation. He was deeply inquisitive about the tumultuous changes of his time-social, economic, political and cultural and supremely alert to the nuances of the zeitgeist. To name on instance of his intuition: it was Henry who ordered up TIME’s famous 1966 cover asking the question “Is GOD dead,”(for the record, the answer was no.)

6

It may have been his greatest advantage has an editor that he was insider (he counted as friends everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Henry Kissinger) who begun as an outsider. Henry arrives in the U.S. in 1938 with his parents, Jewish refugees from Hitler’s Anschluss of their native Austria. He would write about it much letter in his memoir, one month’s America. ‘I love America’, he wrote, because it took me in from the madness of wartime Europe and aloud me to make it my country. ‘love was the key word. All his life, he approached America with a kind of infatuation, hungry to know and to understand everything about the place. Henry’s father had been operetta librettist, and as a young man Henry hoped to become a play wrights but he took a job with TIME as a copy boy while earning a degree at New York University. What begun torn out as a temporary measure torn out to be a destiny. I realize in due course that the theater was not rally my calling, he want said, but that journalism – in did was. His rise was suitable dramatic. At 28, he becomes senior editor and 17 years later, in 1968, managing editor. Very quickly, the magazine begun to reflect his venturesome, capacious mind. He device new sections on the environment, the sexes and behavior..

An Old Standard

Proposed policy responses to global warming include mitigation by emissions reduction, adaptation to its effects, and possible future geoengineering. Most countries are parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC),[15] whose ultimate objective is to prevent dangerous anthropogenic (i.e., humaninduced) climate change. [16] Parties to the UNFCCC have adopted a range of policies designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions[17]:10[18][19][20]:9 and to assist in adaptation to global warming.[17]:13[20]:10[21][22] Parties to the UNFCCC have agreed that deep cuts in emissions are required,[23] and that future global warming should be limited to below 2.0 °C (3.6 °F) relative to the pre-industrial level.[23][B] Reports published in 2011 by the United Nations Environment Programme[24] and the International Energy Agency[25] suggest that efforts as of the early 21st century to reduce emissions may be inadequate to meet the UNFCCC's 2 °C target.

HOUSE ARREST IS NOW ON The success of these innovations will serve as the marketing catalyst to bring energy efficient, green building into the forefront of mainstream awareness. We see the combination of economic need, lack of access to fossil fuels, the practicality and comfort of these homes and buildings, and the implication for future generations as the catalyst for market demand.

When you work with our experienced team you will avoid someone else’s learning curve. Our team has 70+ years of combined experience. For example, we’ve seen enough failed projects to know we WON’T install alternative energy equipment, i.e. solar, geothermal, wind without first reducing a building’s energy use.

Luxuries Harry Potter is a series of seven fantasy novels written by the British author J. K. Rowling. The books chronicle the adventures of a wizard, Harry Potter, and his friends Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger, all of whom are students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The main story arc concerns Harry's quest to overcome the Dark wizard Lord Voldemort, whose aims are to become immortal, conquer the wizarding world, subjugate non-magical people, and destroy all those who stand in his way, especially Harry Potter. Since the release of the first novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone on 30 June 1997, the books have gained immense popularity, critical acclaim and commercial success worldwide.[1] The series has also had some share of criticism, including concern for the increasingly dark tone. As of June 2011, the book series has sold about 450 million copies, making it the best-selling books series in history and has been translated into 67 languages,[2][3] and the last four books consecutively set records as the fastest-selling books in history.

16

A series of many genres, including fantasy and coming of age (with elements of mystery, thriller, adventure, and romance), it has many cultural meanings and references.[4][5][6][7] According to Rowling, the main theme is death,[8] although it is primarily considered to be a work of children's literature. There are also many other themes in the series, such as prejudice and corruption.[9] The initial major publishers of the books were Bloomsbury in the United Kingdom and Scholastic Press in the United States. The books have since been published by many publishers worldwide.

The books, with the seventh book split into two parts, have been made into an eight-part film series by Warner Bros. Pictures, the highest-grossing film series of all time. The series also originated much tie-in merchandise, making the Harry Potter brand worth in excess of $15 billion.[10] Also due to the success of the books and films, Harry Potter has been used for theme parks such as The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Universal Parks & Resorts's Islands of Adventure.

Having What’s In

Teenagers worry a lot about their look because they are influenced by advertising and the media, especially the girls who want to look like models and to be perfect. They spend a lot of money on stuff to look pretty, and sometimes even when they are pretty amazing, they still have a last look at the mirror, and think that they are not still pretty enough, or that something is not still right.

Teenagers and Fashion Most teenagers worry too much about fashion. They admire models and other icons. But that is not the way I think. Some teenagers, specially girls, give much importance to what they wear and to what is trendy. Most people wear some clothes because it is what other people wear and not because they like it. And, in some cases, they don’t even look well in those clothes. Others want to change their physical appearance just to look like famous people because they think they are perfect. In my opinion the clothes we wear have to be comfortable and according to what we like to wear and feel good in. I myself buy clothes that I like because they are my style and not because everyone else wears that type of clothes. Concluding, I think that most teenagers give too much importance to their looks and they shouldn’t do so. Maria Inês Santos I think teenagers worry really a lot about their physical appearance and this sometimes is very boring. Take me for example, I don’t worry a lot about my physical appearance and most of the times I just put on a sweatshirt, a pair of jeans, casual shoes and go to school, but sometimes I wake up and it takes me a lot of time to choose some pretty clothes.

22

I’m a girl and I must confess I also love to spend money on fashion clothes and look pretty, but I don’t I don’t consider myself obsessed with it. I just like to look good and pretty, as anyone else does, and this I think is quite normal. Ana Filipa Silva I think teenagers spend too much money trying to be like their models, and they think if they are similar to their idols they will be very happy and have a good life. That’s wrong! In the USA teenagers make plastic surgeries to reshape parts of their bodies. In my opinion that’s bad because we should like our body as it is and even be proud of it and shouldn’t make plastic surgeries or any other type of reshaping to be someone we are not. What is even worse is that many teenagers make that type of reshaping just to feel accepted by the others. I myself don’t have any part of my body I would reshape, because I like it as it is. I also have my own style and way of living and I’m satisfied with it. In my opinion the pure beauty is inside, in one’s personality, and not in what most people see, our physical appearance. That beauty is a false beauty and it can bring you many disappointments. 23

How to Quit Smoking

A Guide to Kicking the Habit for Good Whether you're a teen smoker or a lifetime pack-a-day smoker, quitting can be tough. But with the right game plan tailored to your needs, you can replace your smoking habits, manage your cravings, and join the millions of people who have kicked the habit for good.

Ways to create your personal stop smoking plan

Why quitting can seem so hard Smoking tobacco is both a psychological habit and a physical addiction. The act of smoking is ingrained as a daily ritual and, at the same time, the nicotine from cigarettes provides a temporary, and addictive, high. Eliminating that regular fix of nicotine will cause your body to experience physical withdrawal symptoms and cravings. To successfully quit smoking, you’ll need to address both the habit and the addiction by changing your behavior and dealing with nicotine withdrawal symptoms.

Relieving unpleasant and overwhelming feelings without cigarettes

Managing unpleasant feelings such as stress, depression, loneliness, fear, and anxiety are some of the most common reasons why adults smoke. When you have a bad day, it can seem like cigarettes are your only friend. Smoking can temporarily make feelings such as sadness, stress, anxiety, depression, and boredom evaporate into thin air. As much comfort as cigarettes provide, though, it’s important to remember that there are healthier (and more effective) ways to keep unpleasant feelings in check. These may include exercising, meditating, using sensory relaxation strategies, and practicing simple breathing exercises. For many people, an important aspect of quitting smoking is to find alternate ways to handle these difficult feelings without smoking. Even when cigarettes are no longer a part of your life, the painful and unpleasant feelings that may have prompted you to

26

Designing your personal game plan Tailoring a personal game plan to your specific needs and desires can be a big help. List the reasons why you want to quit and then keep copies of the list in the places where you’d normally keep your cigarettes, such as in your jacket, purse, or car. Your reasons for quitting smoking might include: I will feel healthier and have more energy, whiter teeth, and fresher breath. I will lower my risk for cancer, heart attacks, strokes, early death, cataracts, and skin wrinkling. I will make myself and my partner, friends, and family proud of me. I will no longer expose my children and others to the dangers of my second-hand smoke. I will have a healthier baby (If you or your partner is pregnant). I will have more money to spend. 27 I won't have to worry: "When will I get to smoke next?"

Global warming is the rise in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans since the late 19th century and its projected continuation. Since the early 20th century, Earth's mean surface temperature has increased by about 0.8 °C (1.4 °F), with about two-thirds of the increase occurring since 1980.[2] Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and scientists are more than 90% certain that it is primarily caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases produced by human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. [3][4][5][6] These findings are recognized by the national science academies of all major industrialized nations.[7][A] Climate model projections were summarized in the 2007 Fourth Assessment Re-

28

port (AR4) by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). They indicated that during the 21st century the global surface temperature is likely to rise a further 1.1 to 2.9 °C (2 to 5.2 °F) for their lowest emissions scenario and 2.4 to 6.4 °C (4.3 to 11.5 °F) for their highest.[8] The ranges of these estimates arise from the use of models with differing sensitivity to greenhouse gas concentrations.[9][10] According to AR4, warming and related changes will vary from region to region around the globe.[11] The effects of an increase in global temperature include a rise in sea levels and a change in the amount and pattern of precipitation, as well a probable expansion of subtropical deserts.

[12] Warming is expected to be strongest in the Arctic and would be associated with the continuing retreat of glaciers, permafrost and sea ice. Other likely effects of the warming include a more frequent occurrence of extremeweather events including heat waves, droughts and heavy rainfall, ocean acidification and species extinctions due to shifting temperature regimes. Effects significant to humans include the threat to food security from decreasing crop yields and the loss of habitat from inundation.[13][14] Proposed policy responses to global warming include mitigation by emissions reduction, adaptation to its effects, and possible future geoengineering. Most countries are parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC),[15]

whose ultimate objective is to prevent dangerous anthropogenic (i.e., humaninduced) climate change.[16] Parties to the UNFCCC have adopted a range of policies designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions[17]:10[18][19][20]:9 and to assist in adaptation to global warming.[17]:13[20]:10[21][22] Parties to the UNFCCC have agreed that deep cuts in emissions are required,[23] and that future global warming should be limited to below 2.0 °C (3.6 °F) relative to the pre-industrial level. [23][B] Reports published in 2011 by the United Nations Environment Programme[24] and the International Etvnergy Agency[25] suggest that efforts as of the early 21st century to reduce emissions may be inadequate to meet the UNFCCC's 2 °C target.

struck off the western coast of Aceh, northern Sumatra, triggering panic as people fled for high ground. The quake’s centre was 20 miles beneath the ocean floor and about 308 miles from the provincial capital of Banda Aceh, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). It was initially reported as being of 8.9 magnitudes but was downgraded shortly after it hit. A

Traffic jams were reported in Aceh, where people scrambled for higher ground as sirens mingled with sounds from the mosques, Reuters reported. A rescue team from Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency was sent to the region to help. Officials in the neighbouring countries of Thailand, Malaysia and India issued precautionary evacuation orders along coastal regions. Thailand temporarily closed Phuket airport, according to local media, with warnings of waves up to 4 metres (13ft) in height hitting the holiday islands of Phuket and Krabi, although no tsunami waves have yet been reported. Tremors, some lasting for as long as five minutes, were felt across south-east Asia after the earthquake hit. Reports on Twitter described employees rushing out of office buildings and families looking for safety as far away as Rangoon, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Singapore, India and Sri Lanka. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC) said an alert had been issued for 28 countries, including Indonesia, Bangladesh, Iran and Oman. An updated warning said sea-level readings indicated that a tsunami measuring 17cms (6.7ins) had been generated but that if no major waves had occurred "for at least two hours after the estimated arrival time, or damaging waves have not occurred for at least two hours, then local authorities can assume the threat is passed".

It warned, however, that damage to boats and coastal structures could continue, owing to rapid currents. The PTWC lifted the tsunami warning for most areas of the Indian Ocean about four hours after the first quake. Bruce Presgrave of the USGS told the BBC a destructive tsunami was less likely because the quake had been caused by the earth moving horizontally instead of vertically. Indonesia sits above the ring of fire, a series of fault lines which make the archipelago nation of roughly 18,000 islands prone to volcanic and seismic activity. The 9.1-magnitude quake that occurred on Boxing Day 2004 triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed 230,000 people, nearly three-quarters of whom were in Aceh.

Welcome to the Hackulous

The WB's Superstar USA is a television show which spoofed the popular show American Idol. Essentially that show's polar opposite, Superstar USA told contestants they were looking for the best singer when they were actually looking for the worst. Hosted by Brian McFayden (Ryan Seacrest's double), people first audition before three judges (the sarcastic Briggs, who also produces the show and could be considered the "Simon" of the show; rapper Tone Loc, the show's answer to Randy Jackson; and singer Vitamin C, put into Paula Abdul's role) in four cities across the United States. Finalists were chosen based on the lie that they were the most likely to be able to parlay their win into a successful recording contact based on talent. However, the audition process was the opposite of American Idol as good singers were mocked and told no while bad singers were given gushing praise and passed to the next round.

(PTWC) said an alert had been issued for 28 countries, including Indonesia, Bangladesh, Iran and Oman.
