You Can’t Take it with You

Blackstone’s Peterson made a mint, then chose to give it away to solve US economic challenges. The turning point in my life came before I was born. It was the day in 1912 when my Greek immigrant father came to America. He came as a teenager, without a penny or a word of English, and with only a third-grade education. He took a job as a railroad dishwasher. He worked, ate and slept in a steaming caboose and saved everything he made. With his savings he opened a restaurant, and kept it open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for 25 years in my hometown of Kearney, Neb. His hard work and thrift gave me extraordinary opportunities. Had I been born in a different country, at a different time, I would never have had the chances that gave me such good fortune. I have lived the American Dream—I went to college, worked in the corporate world, served in government and became an investment banker. And that led to a second turning point, on June 21, 2007, at 9:30 a.m. That was the day the Blackstone Group—a private-equity, asset-management and financial-advisory firm that I cofounded—went public. In an hour I became an instant billionaire.

Let me summarize three such challenges. First, as 78 million baby boomers reach retirement age, the costs of Social Security and Medicare will skyrocket, leaving us with unfunded promises of more than $44 trillion in today’s dollars—equal to about three times our entire gross domestic product. Income taxes would have to double to pay for it—an unthinkable burden.

I’m not sure if we remember how to give up something for the long-term general good. Second, our current-account deficits are unprecedented, fed by record trade deficits. Such dependence on foreign capital is dangerous. America as a country, and Americans as a people, must be persuaded to save more. Third, our health-care costs are metastasizing. We already spend more than twice as much per capita as other developed nations, with no appreciable differences in health outcomes or longevity. These ballooning costs threaten the very competitiveness of American industry.

What to do with so much money? I have much more than enough, and there seems little prospect that I can take it with me. So again I turn to my father’s example. When he had built a modest net worth, he gave generously to his old home in Greece and to the less fortunate in his beloved new home. The “Greatest Generation” that lived through the Depression of the 1930s and World War II confronted, overcame and paid for challenges more sobering than those we face today. We can do it again. I refuse to believe that we have become so selfish and selfabsorbed that we don’t care about our children’s future and America’s leadership in the world. How do we as a country, and Americans as a people, learn to save more and spend less? How do we educate the young about the crisis they will face if things aren’t changed, and then move them to do something about it? Or will it take a real and very costly crisis to force us into action? We need to go where the young people are: new media, bloggers, YouTube, Facebook, MySpace, MTV, and networks and Web sites that have not even been invented, and that is what my foundation will try to do. We will sponsor the production of films that educate people about the perils America faces (I have been impressed with what Al Gore accomplished with “An Inconvenient Truth”). We will have youth summits to get young leaders engaged in the process. Maybe someone should develop an AAYP, an American Association of Young People, to counter-

If Wes Jackson, founder and president of the Land Institute in Salina, Kans., has one complaint, it’s what he calls “our deficit spending of the Earth’s ecological capital,” from oil and minerals to water and trees. NEWSWEEK asked dozens of thinkers for their solutions, from 300mpg cars to using enormous kites to help pull ships. 1. Zero waste:Recycling paper, plastic and aluminum is a start, but, oh, so 20th century. a Eric Lombardi hates waste. “Landfills are like black holes, where resources go in and never come out,” says the executive director of Eco-Cycle, a nonprofit recycler in Boulder, Colo. “As the world’s population explodes and its resource base shrinks, we can’t afford that.” Instead, Lombardi wants manufacturers to make most or all of their products fully recyclable, using materials designed to be recaptured rather than ending up in junkyards. It’s not impossible, as companies like Shaw Carpets and office-furniture maker Steelcase are showing. Both make products with stringent C2C Certification, indicating total recyclability—and 40 other other companies, tapping into the green building trend, are doing the same. “Waste is expensive and inefficient,” says Lombardi. “It only appears cheap because the market doesn’t send bills to industry for groundwater pollution and resource depletion.” 2. LED light bulbs: Never mind the cliché, they really might be a better idea. Now that we’ve all dutifully stocked up on compact fluorescents, guess what? A new generation of even better bulbs may be on its way. LED bulbs burn just half the energy, last eight times longer and contain no traces of mercury, as CFLs do. The best of the fledgling bulbs is the Pharox from Lemnis Lighting. While LEDs have long been used for colored digital readouts and traffic signals, manufacturers have had trouble making white LED bulbs that are as strong as incandescents. Truthfully, the Pharox isn’t there yet. It produces only as much light as a standard 40-watt bulb, and it’s hugely expensive ($39.95 per bulb). History may record primary day in Pennsylvania as the day Bill Clinton officially became the most tragic figure of the 2008 campaign. As voters headed to the polls to place another comeback in Hillary’s hands, her spouse was getting himself into trouble, yet again. When a reporter asked the former president to explain why he felt Barack Obama’s campaign had “played the race card” on him in South Carolina, Clinton was wrathfully indignant, denying he’d ever said such a thing. (Never mind the interview he’d given on a Philadelphia NPR station the day before saying exactly those words.) In an instant, the former president had proved himself not just out of step with the Internet and cable news cycles, but even ignorant to the realities of the radio age. By evening, the Clintons were in opposite narratives: Hillary was living yet another survivor’s tale, showing she could stay and fight. Her husband, however, was the same story he’s been for the whole campaign: off message, old news. What has happened to Bill Clinton? For months, it’s been a great mystery in a mystifying campaign how the most gifted politician of a generation could become an unceasing gaffe machine. Was it the Bubble—had a post-presidency spent with global do-gooders and fawning billionaires made Bubba lose his touch for the common man? Was it Freudian destiny, Hillary’s husband

Americans have never loved this side of Bill, but they’ve tolerated it when it came with a promise of better things. Yes, a good portion of the country agreed that Bill was the victim of a vast, right-wing conspiracy in the ‘90s. Yet that wasn’t why Americans believed in him. They liked him because he fought that conspiracy and won, and in triumph had a smile on his face. Winning this time, however, is Hillary’s job, which sometimes means whining is the only job left for her husband. It doesn’t matter that he may have good reasons to complain. His “fairy tale” description of Obama’s Iraq policy was not racist. The media are biased against him. The Obama campaign has,at times, played the race card with great effect. But no one will make those points for him. He has no allies in the liberal blogosphere where conspiracy theories about the mainstream media gain great traction. Nor does he seem to have many friends left in the black community. Rep. James Clyburn’s comment to The New York Times that Clinton had “incensed” African-Americans caused a stir because of the speaker (Clyburn had heretofore remained neutral in the Obama-Clinton fight), not because of the point he was making. So Bill is left to point out his grievances himself. As a result, he is forever playing Bartleby Bill, the man who cannot move beyond his own victimization, a doomed character in every American myth. But Hillary can still set him free. After a high-minded, dramatic start, the Democratic campaign has devolved into something vaguely sleazy, often dishonest and increasingly small bore. It is entering an arena, in other words, where The Natural knows how to thrive. Hillary has long

The Philippines has long been regarded as an interesting sideshow in Southeast Asia. A former colony of Spain, then the United States, it seems to have more in common with Latin America than with its Asian neighbors. There are few existing written records of its precolonial history and culture. It has no temples like Indonesia’s Borobodur or Cambodia’s Angkor Wat to indicate what civilizations existed on the 7,107 islands before their Western conquest. Artifacts on display at the National Museum and at the Central Bank Museum in Manila offer clues as to the islands’ original inhabitants, but the available scholarship leaves too many questions unanswered. More than a century after the Philippines became an independent republic, the debate over the Filipino identity continues. A new permanent exhibition at the privately owned Ayala Museum in the financial capital, Makati City, only heightens the mystery. “Gold of Ancestors” features 1,059 precious objects that are believed to date back as far as the 10th century. Most were acquired by a private collector, and have never been seen in public. Among the pieces on display are cutwork diadems, funerary masks, ornaments and ritual containers. Their quality and scope suggest that ancient Filipinos had closer links to their Southeast Asian neighbors than is currently supposed. There is a gold vessel in the shape of a creature that is half-bird, halfwoman: the “kimnari” of Hindu mythology. A plaque depicts a female figure in an elaborate headdress with a tree-of-life motif, her hands raised as if in worship. The centerpiece of the exhibition is an intricately crafted gold halter, weighing almost four kilograms, that is believed to be the Upavita, or Sacred Thread, of the sort worn by the elite Brahmin class in traditional Hindu society.

Going For the Gold

Hindu influences can be seen all over Southeast Asia, but the exhibit raises the burning question: who made these objects? Were they created by the inhabitants of the islands now known as the Philippines, or were they brought in by foreign traders? “The answer is, ‘We don’t know’,” says Florina H. Capistrano-Baker, curator in charge of the exhibition. “One of the reasons the collection is so important is that it provides a large body of works for comparative study with similar objects from Southeast Asia, such as those found in Oc-Eo in Vietnam and the Wonoboyo hoard in Indonesia. We assume that they are locally made until proven otherwise.”

Where have the objects been hiding all these years? They were collected by the family of the late National Artist and architect Leandro Locsin, which for decades has funded archeological expeditions and research into the islands’ past. Reluctant to flaunt gold in a country where most of the population lives in poverty, the Locsins have been sitting on the collection for 25 years, waiting for the right conditions to publicly exhibit it. They finally got the chance when the Zobel de Ayala family inaugurated the new Ayala Museum in 2004, providing an appropriate facility to house the collection. “This exhibition is not about present-day personalities and egos,” says a representative of the Locsin family. “It’s about our national patrimony and what it can tell us about who we are as Filipinos. The primary concern is its enlightened stewardship: ensuring that this knowledge develops in our people’s consciousness in a manner that is sustainable, secure and relatively free from possible manipulation.” Scholars have long considered Filipino culture marginal in comparison with the better-known Funan, Angkor, Srivijaya and Madjapahit cultures of Southeast Asia. The “Gold of Ancestors” exhibit suggests that the islands may have played a larger role in regional affairs than previously thought. John Miksic of the National University of Singapore, an authority on Southeast Asian prehistory, has said that this collection represents the single most valuable tangible heritage of the Philippines. It may shine a light on the continuing discussion of Philippine cultural identity. To paraphrase that famous fictitious archeologist Indiana

Just the Tree of Us Driven by public concern, all the candidates agree that action is needed to slow global warming. No matter who’s elected, America’s policy will be different a year from now. At this vital juncture in the earth’s history, it’s clear that the American people are looking for a presidential candidate who will take climate change “very seriously.” One who favors “unbiased research” into the problem and promises to support regulations that are “based on science.” Someone, perhaps, like George W. Bush, who in 2000 managed (in those words) to convey just enough assurance of his good intentions to defuse global warming as a make-or-break issue in the campaign. After seven years of inaction on greenhouse-gas emissions, Bush can honestly claim that he hasn’t changed his position. “I take the issue seriously,” he told a news conference at the end of last year. Even back then, of course, the leaders of environmental groups understood that their interests aligned more closely with Al Gore, who would go on to win the Nobel Peace Prize for his campaign against global warming. This year, though, those leaders want to make sure there’s no confusion on the part of the voting public. The environment, which typically ranks somewhere around “regulatory reform” among voters’ concerns, has emerged as a leading issue in this election cycle; last year more than three voters in 10 said they would take a candidate’s green credentials into account, according to pollster John Zogby, up from just 11 percent in 2005. “It was clear starting all the way back in Iowa and New Hampshire that this campaign would be much more about the environment,” says Dave Willett, a spokesman for the Sierra Club. “The questions weren’t ‘Do you think global warming is happening?’ but ‘How are you going to deal with it, what’s your approach?’ “ Willett presumably means questions from citizens. Climate-change skeptics and deniers sometimes charge that the threat of global warming is a conspiracy kept alive by the media, but the reality seems rather different. The League of Conservation Voters tracks how often candidates are asked about environmental issues in televised debates and interviews, and the current tally shows that of 3,231 questions by the leading political reporters from five networks, exactly eight concerned global warming. The league, which generally calls the tune for most mainstream environmental groups when it comes to national politics, hasn’t chosen a candidate for 2008. Officially, it is keeping an open mind, while waiting for John McCain to elaborate on his global-warming plan. But it would constitute a major political upheaval if the league, for the first time since it began making presidential endorsements in 1980, chose the Republican. In its ranking of senators based on their positions on 15 votes in 2007 (including farm subsidies, gas mileage and biofuel standards), the Democrats are almost all clustered in the top half of the standings, while the Republicans, with a couple of exceptions (essentially, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, both of Maine), bring up the rear. Specifically, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are considered strong environmental candidates. In addition to the annual rankings, the league maintains lifetime standings, which may be more significant than those based on a single year’s votes. The Illinois senator has a 96 percent lifetime voting record; Clinton has a 90 percent lifetime rating and was endorsed by the league as an “environmental champion” in her 2006 re-election campaign. “It’s clear from both of their voting records in the Senate that they’re committed to supporting energy efficiency and slowing global warming,” says league spokesman Jay Natoli. “In fact, they’re too similar to say at this point that one is better than the other. [As for] McCain, his plan isn’t as strong, but he has sponsored and supported leg-

Scientists at MIT are about to produce the world’s first robotic opera. “Death and the Powers,” now in rehearsal at the school’s media lab, is a story about an inventor who wants to live forever and decides to download himself into his household belongings. The opera features an animatronic set, robotic performers and live musicians using “hyperinstruments”—traditional instruments embedded with chips that interpret and enhance a performer’s emotional emphasis. Singers may even use swallowable microchips that will change the way they sound. Created by Tod Machover, an MITbased composer who grew up with an engineer father and a pianist mother, the show boasts big-name talent. The librettist is former U.S. poet laureate Robert Pinsky, and the lead will be sung by James Maddalena, who sang the part of Nixon in the celebrated opera “Nixon in China.” The show is funded by Prince Albert II of Monaco, and will open in Monaco next year before a U.S. tour. CONSERVATION The Sundarbans tiger project is a Bangladesh Forest Department initiative that started its field activities in February 2005. The idea for creating such a project was first developed during a field survey in 2001, conducted by Md. Osman Gani, Ishtiaq U. Ahmad, James L. D. Smith and K. Ullas Karanth. They realized that the Sundarbans mangrove forest at the mouth of the Ganges River contained probably one of the largest populations of wild tigers left in the world. As such, there was an urgent need to start measures that would ensure the protection of this precious area. The Save the Tiger Fund and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service generously donated funds to support the initial phase of research that aimed to collect data on tiger ecology using telemetry, and study the tiger’s environment by assessing its habitat and prey. But management of a wilderness area needs more than just information on the species to be protected. Personnel with skills and resources to implement conservation strategies, and the general support of the country are also required. So from the research base, the project is evolving rapidly to also encompass capacity building and conservation awareness activities. It has been able to do so through the forward thinking approach to management taken by the Forest Department, and the incredible support of the Bangladeshi people. The project is administered by the Forest Department.
