Ocorre que podemos pensar a própria consciência como um fenômeno emergente. Será a consciência cibernética um fenômeno emergente de todo o desenvolvimento técnico-tecnológico-comunicacional? (Aliás, podemos suspeitar como o conjunto das exposições de arte e tecnologia do Itaú Cultural tem constituído uma única reflexão e narrativa a respeito do desenvolvimento tecnológico, da arte e da consciência da relação homem-máquina.) Consideremos o conceito de emergência. Ele foi formulado pela primeira vez por G. H. Lewes, estudioso interessado em literatura, filosofia e ciência, na obra Problems of Life and Mind, no final do século XIX. Depois disso, o conceito fez história na física, na química, na biologia e no campo computacional, com os conceitos de inteligência artificial e algoritmos genéticos. De uma perspectiva muito abrangente, emergência caracteriza os processos e padrões que “surgem” ou “emergem” da “evolução” e/ou “interação” de entidades em sistemas inicialmente “simples” – ou seja, cujas interações são normatizadas por poucas e “simples” regras. Looking at the history of sapiens in perspective, it is noteworthy how, from mere survival and from such rudimentary tools, there emerged such a complex world of signs, symbols and, perhaps, of “consciousness.”
Eleven years ago, in 2008, Itaú Cultural presented the show Emergência!, With the name followed by an exclamation point. In that exhibition, we could make contact with this mathematical concept and with the “emergent” phenomena in nature.
