WEEK 3 READING: LEGER, LE CORBUSIER, AND PURISM

Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier? According to Le Corbusier, the pictorial space is a flat which cannot be entered or circulated through. And it is irremediably space viewed from a certain distance and is eternally resigned to frontality. Secondly, the pictorial cannot be rotated, circulated or measured; simultaneously, color and texture identify the division between object and the surrounding of the drawing instead of three-dimensional space as the space can be imagined on the basis of inference.

Question 2: The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s paintings are attributable to two properties. What are they? And what are these pitted against? The two properties which are attributed to Le Corbusier’s painting’s flatness are color and texture. The flatness of the drawing is the use of white or light pigment to draw a continuous surface of paint rather than drawing with the black color which creates a three-dimensional space such as cast shadow and visual contrast; at the same time, the texture can be pitted against the common conception of depth. Both of them are pitted against any distance and depth that can be experienced by rotating around the object in order to ensure the notion of the flatness can be concentrated on.

MARIO’S WORLD

1ST MARIO’S WORLD

The first projection of Mario world was focused on the spatial structure of the invisible space and the accuracy between elevations and axonometric view to study the whole space of Mario world.

COMBINED MARIO’S ’S WORLD

Ths combined projection of Mario world intended to use water canals which plays a necessary role of connection to be furnished in the Mario world; the water system is a flexible element in the world which creates a more natural atmosphere. Simultaneously, clouds are combined in the stage.

WEEK 4 READING: AXONOMETRIC PROJECTION: NEW GEOMETRIS AND OLD ORIGINS FROM PRACTICE: ARCHITECTURE, TECHNIQUE AND REPRESENTATION Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictoral (in this case perspectival) space and Projection?

The pictorial space of the question is a two-dimensional flat with a vanishing point which creates a finite expansion of space. The vanishing point influence the distortion of a view which produces a correct perspective. In contrast with perspectives, the projection, the object of drawing is constructed parallelly so that the content of the drawing is measurable and reflects the infinite depth. The most important is the projection suggests a continuous space in which elements are in constant motion.

Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? Axonometric aroused initially in a military to chart the three-dimensional trajectories of artillery projectiles. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it was also taught in engineering schools and developed closely with mechanization and industrialization. Moreover, Axonometric projection which can be rotated, reconstructed, and measured without distortions was an ideal tool for the military due to its accuracy. In the 20th century, Axonometric projection was popularized by the avant-grade artists as a new paradigm of representation to renew contact with the geometry.

ILLUSTRATED MARIO’S NEW WORLD According to both elevations, the spatial structure of this world is emphasized that the hidden space in the middle of this drawing is the core of the world which should be given an indispensable role to create a vivid atmosphere and connect two projections. In my drawing, mountains with dots are the main element which creates the hierarchical landform which also indicates the vertical axis at the same time.Based on the spatial structure created by the mountains, the different elevations of water canals can incline the diversity of height. Secondly, the water is the vital element to extend the space from horizontal to the vertical direction. On the right-hand side, a continuous section of the hill can be seen as the foreground which given an imaginary space of the middle area for viewers. And on the back of the world, there is an interval which reveals compositions hidden beyond the mountains. Apart from the context above, the other elements in the world such as three kinds of boxes, small shrubs, and the pipes of a tunnel are not only as decorations also the path for Mario in the game. Some of them are either accessible passages or barriers for moving on. They are useful elements not only in the game also in this spatial construction. Last but not least, the cloud above the ground and the background make an influence on the atmosphere which illustrates the weather condition, not a sunny day, and create an authentic effect of this projection. In the progress of drawing Mario world, the importance of projection with correct concepts cannot be ignored. Simultaneously, spatial conflicts which cannot be seen in the hidden space would be found and modified for accuracy. Transparency can assist me to ensure the balance between different objects; gradient is a useful command which is used to display objects’ surface of the world.
